Yes, if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 or another epidemic/pandemic illness, this insurance offers cover for claims relating to:

  • Overseas emergency assistance
  • Overseas emergency medical
  • Cancellation
  • Additional expenses

If you're travelling with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, some cover is also available under the cancellation and additional expenses benefits.

Does NAB credit card travel insurance cover family members?

Yes, your spouse and dependants (i.e. your children) can also get cover when they are travelling with you for at least 50% of your trip. They also need to meet the same travel booking requirements and other conditions of the insurance policy. Check the policy document for full details.

This travel insurance doesn’t automatically offer cover for any pre-existing conditions. But you can apply for an assessment of your pre-existing condition/s by calling Allianz Global Assistance on 1800 187 025.

If you are eligible, you will get written confirmation from Allianz that a pre-existing medical condition is covered. A $75 administration fee applies as part of this process.

What if I don’t apply or get approval for a pre-existing condition?

You won't get cover for any claims related to the pre-existing condition/s. This includes conditions that you've had professional treatment for and untreated conditions you're aware of before you travel.

Got a pre-existing health condition? Compare other travel insurance policies that offer cover for conditions including anxiety, high blood pressure and knee replacement.

If it's an emergency, call Allianz on +617 3305 8800 when you're overseas or 1800 010 075 in Australia. You can also submit a claim online by following these steps:

  • Go to the online claims portal at https://claimmanager.com.au/nab/agreement
  • Confirm you agree with the terms and conditions, then select "Create new claim"
  • Select the "Credit card insurance" option and provide details of your card
  • Fill in the details on the claim form and upload your supporting documentation

You will be contacted about your claim within 10 business days, according to the online claims website.

What to include in your claim

With insurance claims, include as many details as you can. This makes it easier for the insurer to look at the claim and your eligibility for a payout. Some examples include:

  • A referral or letter from a doctor or other professional you see in relation to a claim
  • Photo evidence
  • Police reports

Tip: Use a travel wallet or create an online folder to keep all your important documents together. This could include your passport, itinerary, printed tickets, a copy of the NAB card insurance policy booklet – plus anything that could become supporting documentation for claims.

  • Luggage delay: After a delay of 12 hours or more, $150 per person up to a maximum of $400 for all claims combined.

  • Is there an excess cost? There is a $75 excess for cancellation, additional expenses and luggage claims.

Rental vehicle excess in Australia insurance

  • Is there an excess cost? $100 per claim.

How to make a claim under one of these policies

You can also get access to other types of insurance for items you buy with an eligible NAB credit card. Here's a basic explainer of each one:

  • Purchase protection insurance: Offers cover for up to 90 days when you buy a new item with your eligible card and it's then stolen, accidentally damaged or lost. It covers household and personal items such as jewellery, watches, glasses and new works of art. There is no excess but specific claim limits may apply.
  • Extended warranty insurance: Cover that doubles the manufacturer's warranty for items bought in Australia, up to a maximum period of 12 months.

Hi, I'm 65 husband 73, both healthy, getting quotes for cruising as have 5 cruises over the coming months.  I am tempted to get a NAB premium debit card, however, can't seem to get a clear answer if it covers cruising.  The debit card would cost $10 per month, which I think is pretty good comparing to the cost of travel insurance the cheapest I have been quoted is $1574 for the year through World2Cover.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi subaru94

I would assume that it would be similar to my Com Bank credit card, in that cruise cover is excluded but offered as an extra, cost is linked to the cruise places visited and length of cruise.

Check out their disclosure statement, it would be included in their exclusions.

I researched complimentary Credit Card insurance a few months ago and put a spreadsheet in this section of the forum. I did not check debit cards and I don't know if it would give you the coverage you need. From reading the pds for the NAB credit card on line, I am pretty sure it covers cruising, but I don't know about the debit card. You can easily check it out on line.

Thank you for your feedback,  after waiting for nearly an hour on phone got through to the underwriters, who said yes cruising both Australia and overseas  was covered as was covid 19 if you were to test positive the day before and had to change flights, only thing is $300 excess required.  So I think we will probably go through the NAB debit card.

Hey Subaru94,

Have a look at the definition of overseas in the PDF booklet

"overseas means outside of Australia and its territories other than when you are aboard a foreign registered cruise vessel in Australian territorial waters."

I would take that to mean yes!!

ANZ has similar wording..."outside of Australia and its territories, and includes when you are aboard a foreign registered cruise vessel in Australian territorial waters."

Both are underwritten by Allianz.

The NAB has different coverage for under 76 with unlimited Medical and no cover for 76 - 91, so you would be fine in regards to your ages.

I did notice that NAB has unlimited cancellation which ANZ is only $20000.

Will look into NAB as ANZ has taken away our Breakfree investment package and its "perks" which included our ANZ Qantas black card, so will have to pay $400 year to keep it!!

The only info I have to hand is that the NAB complimentary travel insurance is available on several different types of credit cards that have differing annual fees ($30, $90, $250, $295). You must spend $500 of the travel cost of the card and claims have an excess of $300. The insurance only covers people up to 76 years of age.

For full details I suggest you read the pds that is available on the NAB website.

My credit card only covers international travel, which excludes domestic cruises, it also requires a minimal spend on aspects of the travel.

Elorac123

I use Westpac platinum for an annual fee and as a long term customer still only pay $100 a year and this card which also comes with rewards.

As of Last month they have included Covid cover “yeah” covers up to 80 must spend $500 pp and has a $300 excess.

I'm getting really confused now, I thought I had it down what Credit Card Insurance covered, now not so sure, I had been told by the bank the basic free insurance did not cover cruises, that you had to purchase an option for cruising.

Just down loaded their latest product discloser.

Just been through it several times, until my eyes started swirling.

As far as I can see, cruising international or domestic is  covered in the standard free cover. It instructs "For a domestic cruise, not part of an international journey, please choose ‘Pacific’ as your destination during activation" . Well there you go.

There is no exclusions anywhere for cruising its self, however there are some cruise extras that require inclusion, " Cabin Confinement; Prepaid Shore Excursion Cancellation; Formal Wear Damaged, Lost or Stolen; Delayed Formal Wear; Marine Rescue Diversion" . Oh by the way I'm referring to Com Bank Credit Card Insur.

I'm still trying to make sense of their Covid clauses.

Evon I have tried to find your spreadsheet, but can't seem to get the right search words to locate it, do you have any hints to locate it?

Here it is again. It looks small on the screen but it can be enlarged. Different banks have their own T&C.

Why a debit card? why not just get a Credit Card that has included insurance, most banks do them, ANZ Rewards Platinum for example or a Westpac Altitude Platinum, for about $99 a year card fee you get full travel insurance and also collect points for gift cards or you can convert them into frequent flyer points.

Most have offers of a fee free for first year and bonus points.

I got an ANZ card, no fee fo the first year and almost enough points for one way Virgin flights for both of us from Perth to Sydney when we cruise between the 2 citys next year.

Thanks Evon.

Insurers are a bit sneaky, just found out the PDS Downloaded from the bank is different than the one issued by their insurer.

Redoing another long search through another 90 odd pages.  🤬

Hi MicCanberra, I got told by a few travel insurance companies that domestic cruises are actually classified as international as soon as they leave the ports, not sure if this is something new or because of Covid.  I asked the underwriters for the NAB  platinum card and they said all cruises covered by credit card, even if you test positive to Covid the day before and have to change travel arrangements they are all covered to.

Don't think we would get approved for a Credit Card now as husband retired on a pension and I only work a few hours a week.  Low income?? Hence why I was looking at the NAB debit card that also includes travel insurance.  Will visit bank tomorrow to see what is possible.

Yes when I spoke to the underwriters they said over 76 medical expenses not included,  that's o.k. for us as husband is 73 gives us a few years to use the card.

Thanks just noticed your updated comment.

Great thanks Suburu94, I’m going to look into the NAB debit card. Since our ANZ credit card now has a limit of $20000 for cancellation. We are also retired, so not sure how easy it is to get a new credit card.

It may have changed, we have had an annual policy for the last 5 or so years due to that and a few other reasons anyway.

NAB Travel Cards: The Complete Guide

Published: Jun 14, 2024, 11:18am

Table of Contents

Nab debit cards for travelling, nab credit cards for travelling, should i use a bank card or travel card while abroad, bottom line, frequently asked questions (faqs).

In 2012, NAB released a Traveller Card with the intention to make it easier for jet-setters to access their cash while abroad.

However, since November 2020, the bank closed the card to new customers. These days, NAB customers travelling overseas can opt for one of NAB’s other cards that can be used internationally, or use a rival bank or money transfer service.

This guide outlines the pros and cons of the Traveller Card for those existing customers whose cards may not have reached their expiration date yet, as well as the other NAB cards that can be used overseas. We break down international fees; conversion rates; included insurance; and other features.

All fees, interest rates and benefits are accurate at the time of writing and are subject to change.

The debit cards offered by NAB that can be used for travelling—as in, used overseas—include the discontinued NAB Traveller Card, the NAB Visa Debit Card, and the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card.

The details of each card, primarily in relation to international use, are outlined below.

Note that as these are debit cards, there is no interest rate to take into consideration. The NAB credit cards for travelling, which we explore later, will outline the various interest rates among different credit cards.

There are eight credit cards on offer from NAB, all of which can be used abroad. For ease of reference, we have split the comparisons of these cards into standard credit cards and rewards credit cards.

Let’s start with the standard credit cards —the NAB Low Fee Card, NAB Low Fee Platinum Card, NAB Low Rate Card and the NAB StraightUp Card .

As these are credit cards, there is the interest rate to consider on purchases, whether at home or abroad. This is unless it is an interest-free card.

Now, let’s look at the rewards cards , including the frequent flyer credit cards that allow you to earn travel perks, such as bonus points to redeem on flights or upgrades, lounge access, complimentary travel insurance and more.

It’s worth noting that on June 12, NAB made some significant changes to its NAB Rewards Signature card, including ditching the annual fee for a $24 per month payment (which works out slightly cheaper); a waiver on the monthly fee when more than $5,000 is spent each month; the scrapping of international transaction fees, which were formerly 3%; and the addition of mobile phone insurance. Reward earn rates have also changed, with uncapped potential added, and complimentary lounge passes will be available to passengers whose flights are delayed. For full details of the change, visit Nab’s dedicated Signature Rewards page .

NAB economics data shows a third of Australians say they’re saving and planning for a holiday this year.

“Our customers and bankers have told us one of the key pain points for travel cards is around international transaction fees,” said Tim Peters, NAB executive of Personal Lending Experience.

For information on what you could buy with bonus points, read our guide on what Qantas points are worth, including how many points you would need to redeem domestic and international flights.

There are many cards on the market that can be used when travelling, with some companies offering cards designed for this purpose alone. Wise and Revolut , for example, offer debit cards that allow Australian cardholders to store numerous currencies on the single card, create local bank account details in multiple countries, and save on foreign transaction fees and/or currency conversion fees.

As stated, NAB discontinued its travel-specific card that allowed its customers to hold multiple currencies. However, its Big Four competitors still have their own versions available: the Westpac Travel Money Card allows for 11 currencies, while the Commonwealth Bank Travel Money Card can hold 13.

Like NAB, ANZ discontinued its version of a travel card in recent years as well.

While it’s unfortunate that NAB no longer offers its travel-specific card with multiple currencies, NAB still has options for Australians when travelling.

If you are after a NAB card to use abroad, you will need to consider whether you want a debit or credit card, whether you’re willing to pay an annual or monthly fee, any additional perks you are after, and the foreign transaction fees you’ll be charged while travelling—although NAB has scrapped foreign transaction fees on its Signature Credit Card as of June 2024.

Does NAB have travel cards?

NAB used to have a travel-specific card, allowing Australians to travel internationally and spend money in one account with various currencies while abroad. This card was discontinued in recent years, with NAB not publicly explaining why this occurred.

Now, NAB customers wanting to use their NAB cards while overseas will have to consider the foreign transaction fees as well as any ATM withdrawal fees. If they’re using a credit card, they will also need to consider the interest rate on purchases if they don’t pay their card off in full each month.

Luckily, all NAB cards can be used abroad.

Is NAB’s travel insurance good?

Some of NAB’s card offerings include complimentary domestic and international travel insurance when you book your trip with your card. Often this complimentary insurance offered by credit card companies is more of a ‘bare bones’ policy, rather than a comprehensive travel insurance policy .

With NAB, the complimentary international travel insurance can be claimed if you:

  • charge at least $500 of your prepaid travel costs to the account holder’s card account before leaving Australia
  • have a return overseas travel ticket before leaving Australia
  • be aged under 81 years at the time you become eligible for the cover by meeting the conditions above.

On NAB’s website, it states that the “the below information is a limited summary only and is subject to applicable terms, conditions, exclusions, limits, sub-limits and excesses that may apply”. In summary, it says it may cover:

  • Overseas emergency assistance and medical expenses;
  • Accidental death and loss of income;
  • Cancellation;
  • Travel delay and alternative transport expenses;
  • Luggage and luggage delay;
  • Rental vehicle excess; and
  • Personal liability.

It’s important to read the terms and conditions of your individual card and its travel insurance conditions before you rely on it for your insurance needs while abroad.

What are the international transaction fees on NAB cards?

International transaction fees charged on NAB cards vary from card to card, but are usually around 3% to 4% of the transaction. There are additional charges for cash withdrawals overseas, as well as a transaction fee, and usually a withdrawal fee from the ATM operator. As of June 12, 2024, NAB has scrapped these international fees on its Rewards Signature card.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Credit card travel insurance

Complimentary or 'free' credit card travel insurance is a popular feature which many travellers rely on for cover during their travels.  Checking the fine print of your credit card travel insurance policy terms is essential - otherwise, you might find common exclusions leave you out of pocket.

What is  credit card travel insurance?

Pros and cons of credit card travel insurance.

Here's the top four pros and cons of complimentary credit card travel insurance:

credit card travel insurance underwriters

Most credit card policies are underwritten by the same companies as standalone policies, so you know legitimate claims will be paid.

credit card travel insurance medical

Most credit card travel insurance policies specifically exclude pre-existing conditions from cover.

credit card travel insurance ages

While standard travel insurance gets more expensive as you get older, there's no extra cost on credit card travel insurance policies.

credit card travel insurance limits

Many cards have an age limit or restrictions once you hit 75 years of age. Trip duration is often limited of 1 to 6 months, so you might not be covered at all even though you've paid your annual fee.

credit card travel insurance destination

You don't have to pay extra to be covered for places like Japan and the USA, which typically cost more with standalone policies due to .

credit card travel insurance activities

If you're going skiing, riding a motorcycle, or partaking in adventure activities be sure to check the policy detail as they may be excluded.

credit card travel insurance free

You've already paid for your policy using your annual fees, so there's no additional cost to you.

credit card travel insurance fee

Annual card fees can be hefty. Depending upon your trip details, a standalone policy may be cheaper than your credit card annual fee.

credit card travel insurance

Activating  credit card travel insurance

1. activation on purchase, 2. activation on value or percentage of trip purchases, 3. activation on flight purchase, 4. activation on notification.

You need to call your card provider or log in to their internet banking or app and notify them of your trip to activate the policy.

compare credit card  travel insurance conditions

The information provided is factual at the time of writing and general in nature.  We have not considered your personal circumstances.  Eligibility requirements and terms and conditions for cover are subject to change from time to time.  Please refer to your credit card provider and the latest policy wording prior to your travels.

Will credit card insurance cover you?

Spouse or family members, trip length.

travel cover luggage

what credit card travel insurance may not cover

Pre-existing conditions, holiday activities,   high-value items, what credit card travel insurance covers, overseas emergency medical treatment, cancellation fees and lost deposits, luggage and personal effects, public liability, credit card travel cover  faqs, is credit card travel insurance any good.

Whether credit card travel insurance is as good as or better than standalone travel insurance depends entirely on you and your circumstances. If you're going for a short trip, you've paid for your flight on your card, and you have no pre-existing medical conditions, taking advantage of 'free' credit card travel insurance might be a winner. But if you're going for a while, doing any adventurous activities, or you're got existing health issues, a standalone product may offer you the coverage you're looking for.

Which Australian credit cards come with travel insurance?

Not every credit card comes with travel insurance. Complimentary travel insurance is typically offered on premium credit or rewards cards that have higher annual fees. Check your policy documents for details or contact your bank. You can also check the table above for some of the more popular credit cards.

What is the best credit card for travel insurance?

The benefits you get with credit cards varies based on the type of card you have, the policy provider and your individual circumstances, so there isn’t actually a “best” credit card for travel insurance. Our table lists Australia's premium cards that provide travel insurance and outlines any activation criteria.

Can I cover my medical conditions with my credit card cover?

In most cases, pre-existing medical conditions will not be covered by travel insurance that comes with your credit card, but you may be able to get cover for this by contacting the insurer and paying an additional premium. You will need to check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), also known as policy wording to find out whether pre-existing medical conditions are covered. The alternative is a standalone travel insurance, learn more about covering your medical conditions.

Am I covered if I go skiing?

Like all insurances, some limitations apply to the travel insurance that comes with your credit card or rewards card and skiing is often one of them. Winter sports activities such as skiing and snowboarding are often excluded from credit card travel insurance, so if you're planning on hitting the slopes you should contact your provider to ensure that you have adequate cover for your planned activities. If not, opt for a standalone ski insurance policy.

The insurance is activated when you spend $500 or more. Your spouse and any dependent children travelling with you will also be covered.

As always, travel insurance is a highly personal thing so I would recommend you read the PDS  here  to see if the cover is suitable for your needs.

NAB Platinum Visa Debit card in conclusion

Whilst there are other cards in the market (ING Direct, Macquarie Everyday Account, Citi Plus Account) that offer 0% foreign currency transaction fees, the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card is unique because it also includes a range of insurance products.

This means the card can potentially save you hundreds of dollars a year in travel insurance and purchase protection. This is a key feature to keep in mind if you don’t already use a premium credit card such as the NAB Signature Visa or you’re a younger traveller who doesn’t have access yet to the high-end travel credit cards on the market.
