Things to Do in Champagne
Rich in history.
The region has a long history stretching back to the Roman times. Reims was even once known as the ‘Coronation City’ as every French king was coronated in the grand cathedral. You’ll get the chance to cycle to this and many other historical sights on our Champagne cycling tours. The towns and villages you can stop by all have a rich story to tell. Near Châlons-en-Champagne is the historical Basilica of Notre Dame de l’Epine, where you can hear about the local folktales.
Champagne Houses
The region has many Champagne houses to explore. A distinct feature here is the Crayeres; chalk wine cellars where the bubbles are born. The most famous is at Ruinart in Reims, considered a national monument for its age and size. Many Champagne houses are well established, and at Geoffroy in Ay they’ve been perfecting wine across five generations. Wine lovers will enjoy the extensive tour at Joseph Perrier, where you’ll discover the secrets of the golden fizz on your Champagne cycling tour.
The great thing about cycling in Champagne is the fact that it has both pan-flat canal-side paths and some lovely lanes through the rolling vineyards and hills, giving a wonderful variety to each day of cycling.

The Sparkling Slopes
Champagne bike tours.
Champagne - famous for its sublime sparkling wine, verdant vineyards, and charming churches and villages. It’s a region of breathtaking beauty, and a bicycle tour through its UNESCO World Heritage vineyards is a delight for every sense.
The region of Champagne, lying in the north-west of France, is split into five viticultural districts: Aube, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, Montagne de Reims (a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its cathedral, used for coronations), and Vallée de la Marne.
Champagne gained its wonderful reputation as a wine making region during the Middle Ages with its principal grape varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, and its proximity to Paris ensured the success of the region’s wine trade. The landscape of the region consists of vibrant vineyards on chalky hills, where sparkling wines like champagne began to be produced in the 17th Century. The ripening of the grapes is helped along by the presence of forests and often cool temperatures, which help to improve the acidity of the grapes, essential to the unique taste of champagne.
A guided bike tour of Champagne is an unrivaled way to explore the natural beauty and incredible history of this region, from the UNESCO vineyards to Hautvillers, the Avenue de Champagne to Dom Pérignon Church. On a wine tasting bike tour, you can cycle, sip, and snack your way to a full appreciation of the sights and tastes of this incredible area!

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event. Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

The vineyards that dot the Champagne landscape are not only emblematic for their renowned wines, they also contribute to local biodiversity by providing unique habitats for many species . Sustainable viticulture practices are increasingly being promoted, encouraging a harmonious coexistence between agriculture and environmental conservation.
Discovering the Champagne region by bike is not only an enriching experience for active tourism enthusiasts , but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in an ecosystem rich in biodiversity. Combining the beauty of the countryside with the pleasures of the mouth , the region is sure to appeal to cyclists of all abilities and tastes.
The region and its people
It’s impossible to not talk about wine when we talk about Champagne! The vine was brought by the Romans but the sparkling wine does make an appearance until the 14th century. Since then, an entire economy has been forged around its vineyards that produce one of the most famous wines in the world.
Subjected to invasions and therefore to various influences throughout its history, Champagne has inherited a very varied architectural heritage . The monuments in chalk or terracotta brick follow the half-timbered ones. The Roman era left some remnants, notably in Reims. From medieval castles to Romanesque churches to Gothic buildings, let yourself be enchanted by all this architectural diversity.
The region was strongly impacted by the First World War but was still able to relaunch its economy which, in addition to wine, has long been heavily based on crafts. Knives are made in the region, as the Nogent Cutlery Museum can testify. Basketry, stained glass work, glass and textiles are also very developed.
The gastronomy is not left behind with many local specialties among them the Ham and the Reims Rose Biscuits or the Champagne Truffle. Sweet delicacies to accompany a glass of Champagne are not lacking either …
Roads and bike lanes in Champagne
The network of bicycle lanes in Champagne was built on the towpaths along the rivers and canals that wind through the region, as well as on abandoned railways. Tourism infrastructures have also adapted to the growth of bicycle tourism by providing secure areas for bicycles and many bicycle shops.
Two major routes serve the Champagne-Ardenne region: Champagne à Vélo and the Ardennes à Vélo, which offer more than 450 km of greenways to help you discover all the charms of the region.
The weather in Champagne
Champagne offers a temperate climate. The plains of Champagne around Reims and Troyes are bathed by a relatively mild and less rainy climate than the regions further east and north with reasonable annual rainfall.
In the summer, it’s pleasant to cycle in the region thanks to mild temperatures between 20 and 25 ° C on average. However, the mornings can be chilly, which is why it’s better to have a warm layer for morning outings.
The 7 must-see sites in Champagne

- The Champagne vineyards with its large houses and cellars to visit
- The Reims Mountain and its villages of character
- Châlons-en-Champagne , City of Art and History with significant architectural heritage and dynamic cultural life

Champagne Bike Tour: Experience Epernay Like Never Before!
Champagne bike tour: the ultimate guide to cycling routes around epernay.
E-bike tours! That’s the buzzword I keep hearing as soon as the sun starts shining. Who would’ve thought that champagne and e-bikes would pair so well? The Champagne region, with its gentle hills and sprawling vineyards, is the perfect playground for wine and bike enthusiasts. But with so many options available, how do you find the perfect Champagne bike tour around Epernay?
In this post, I’ll unveil the must-try e-bike tours that will introduce you to the Champagne vineyards like never before.
So, which routes should you prioritize for your e-bike tour in the Champagne region ? What are the perks of renting an e-bike? What hidden gems do Epernay and its surroundings hold? Which villages are a must-visit for an authentic Champagne cycling experience?
Ready for this adventure? Let’s dive into the best Champagne cycling tours around Epernay! And stay with me until the end, because I have a special recommendation that will turn your Champagne experience into an unforgettable memory.
Cycling in Champagne: The Marne Véloroute
If you’re staying in Epernay, you can easily access this route from the bridge over the Marne, right next to the 📍pharmacy .
From there, you’re just about 1 km away from the greenway near the neighboring town, Dizy. Getting there is a breeze: just follow the clearly marked bike path, and it’ll lead you straight to 📍your destination .
E-bike tours! That’s what I often hear, and here’s my answer: Ever dreamt of cycling through picturesque landscapes with the Marne by your side? The Marne Véloroute is just what you need! Stretching 62 km between Dormans and Moncetz-Longevas, this route is a gem for those who love bike rides .
Why is it so special, you ask? Well, picture a route running alongside the Marne and its canal, offering breathtaking views at every turn. And the best part? It’s completely flat! It’s the dream ride for those who want to enjoy without breaking a sweat, especially if you’ve rented an e-bike in Epernay . And if you’re with family, even better. You can break up the route as you see fit, depending on your pace and preferences.
On your journey, don’t miss out on stopping by charming villages like Ay-champagne , Damery, and many more. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, savor a glass of champagne, and simply live in the moment.
Love to plan ahead? No worries! You can download the detailed map here . If you just want to cover a small segment, like a visit to Ay-champagne , that’s totally doable.
🍇 Quick tip : If you’re looking for the perfect Champagne day tour on a bike , look no further. I’ve curated an ideal route for you, complete with my top recommendations for tastings and visits along the way. Discover my favorite e-bike tour around Epernay here .
Epernay Bike Route: Explore “The Crown of Epernay”
Keen on discovering the heart of Epernay by bike? I suggest starting with “The Crown of Epernay” . This 7.5 km loop, with a 100-meter elevation gain, is the perfect first step after picking up your bike.
Most of this route is on Epernay’s bike paths, ensuring a safe ride. A highlight you shouldn’t miss is the Avenue de Champagne . With its Champagne Houses and private mansions, this avenue beautifully showcases late 19th-century architecture.
Venture a bit further, and you’ll reach Mont Bernon . From there, the view over the city and the historic slopes is simply stunning.
Good to know : Over the years, Epernay has become increasingly bike-friendly. The gradual addition of bike paths makes for a more pleasant ride. However, stay alert: the city sometimes undergoes construction, which can complicate certain routes. But once you leave the urban area, the Champagne landscapes offer truly unique Champagne cycling tours .
Bike Route through the Western Slopes of Epernay
Looking for a fresh vista to explore by bike? I invite you to discover the Western Slopes of Epernay . It’s a spot I particularly love for its breathtaking views of the city, all while being surrounded by vineyards. If you’ve already tackled “The Crown of Epernay”, this is a natural follow-up that takes you to the other side of the city , offering a different perspective. With its 9 km and a 100-meter elevation gain, this route strikes a good balance between challenge and visual reward.
And if you’re lucky enough to ride it in autumn , brace yourself for a colorful spectacle. The vineyards then don golden and copper hues, making the experience even more magical.
Champagne Bike Tours: Exploring the Côte des Blancs
Ever heard of the Côte des Blancs ? If you’re a Champagne enthusiast like me, this wine region is a must-visit. Known for its vast vineyards stretching as far as the eye can see, it offers two distinct routes for venturing north and south, whether on a traditional bike or an e-bike .
North and South of the Côte des Blancs : These routes of 29 km and 21 km plunge you right into the heart of Chardonnay territory. Picture yourself surrounded by vineyards, immersed in the authenticity of this Champagne landscape.
If you plan to spend the day there, I highly recommend scheduling some tastings and cellar tours . A place I often suggest is the Vine and Wine Museum of Champagne Launois in Mesnil-sur-Oger.
For more details on this museum and other gems of the region, I’ve penned a comprehensive article on the Côte des Blancs .
Need a break? The Vine Garden in Mesnil-sur-Oger and Chouilly is the perfect spot. This landscaped area offers a unique perspective on the Champagne landscape. If you’re with family, kids will love this interactive space.
I also recommend Parc Vix in Avize for its panoramic view and the Belvédère in Cramant for its stunning vista over the vineyard and surrounding villages. These spots are ideal for a moment of relaxation, be it for a picnic or simply to admire Champagne in all its glory.
The Guided Bike Tour: My Champagne Favorite
After covering the essential e-bike routes through the Champagne vineyards, one question remains: would you prefer company on your next ride?
If so, let me tell you about a guided tour I truly loved. With an expert guide by your side, every step, every stop becomes a revelation. It’s the perfect opportunity to deeply understand Champagne, its traditions, and its landscapes in a more intimate and detailed manner.
What are the perks of this tour?
- Expertise at every turn: Your guide, a true connoisseur of the Champagne vineyards, will share details and anecdotes you won’t find anywhere else.
- Guaranteed peace of mind: No more planning headaches. The route is already designed for you, optimized to introduce you to the hidden treasures of the region.
- Iconic discoveries: Beyond the vineyards, you’ll explore landmark sites that bear witness to Champagne’s rich history.
And the highlight? The Champagne lunch. The local cuisine, prepared with love, the warm welcome, genuine smiles, and the friendly atmosphere that envelops you… Everything is absolutely perfect. And to top it all off, you’ll taste local spirits that the region takes pride in: champagne, of course, but also Bouzy red wine and ratafia.
For those staying in Reims, everything is simplified. A van picks you up, takes you to the starting point of the tour, and then brings you back. A hassle-free day, just pure enjoyment.
I hope this post inspires you to rent an e-bike and explore Epernay and its routes leading to other villages in a new light, uncovering hidden corners and unique panoramas. The best places to visit in Champagne on an e-bike are waiting for you.

Essential Reminder : If you ask, “Can you drink and ride a bike?” the answer is clear: even on a bike, drinking and riding is dangerous. Always drink responsibly and ensure you’re safe to continue your Champagne cycling tour .

Bonjour, I am a little confused as to how to do this in one day. My husband and I would like to ebike through champagne to visit some wineries. What do you suggest? Do you organise tours? We will be coming from Paris and do we arrive Reims or Eperney?
We would need to organise a train trip there.
Is it possible to do in a day.
Merci, Carolina
Hello Carolina,
Thank you for your message! I understand the confusion, as there are several cycling routes you can take through Champagne, and it’s important to choose the one that fits your plans best. My article highlights a few of these bike itineraries, each offering unique experiences depending on whether you want to explore around Reims or Épernay.
For a one-day trip, my advice would be to go with a guided tour, especially if you’re coming from Paris. While I don’t organize tours myself, I recommend the one mentioned in the last paragraph of this article: The Guided Bike Tour: My Champagne Favorite. It’s one of the best in the region and they might even be able to pick you up at the station.
The tour includes lunch, a visit to the beautiful village of Hautvillers, detailed explanations about the vineyards, and a winery visit. They’ll also drop you back at the station, so you could even organize to visit another winery in Épernay afterward.
I hope this helps you plan your day in Champagne!
Merci, Sarah

If you are looking for a France bike tour to discover the country’s wine, you are in the right place. Located in the northeast region of France, Champagne is probably best known for the sparkling white wine to which it lends its name. But this beautiful region offers so much more than a famous bubbly beverage. With a long history and rich heritage , visitors will not only experience some of the best wine tasting the world over, they will also encounter a rich history filled with wonder and beauty. Ancient castles, fortresses and countless vineyards coupled with delectable cuisine afford visitors a delicious, unique, and unforgettable journey. France is home to some of the most beautiful places on earth, and the Champagne region is no exception. With its beautiful landscapes, ancient heritage and world-famous vineyards , Champagne offers a travel experience second to none.
Famous around the world for its unique sparkling wine, Champagne is also a region with a rich heritage, filled with wonder and beauty. Cycling along the Champagne Road , you will be able to explore the outstanding hillsides of Champagne, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Focusing on Reims and Epernay , our trip takes you to the heart of the region. In Reims you can take your time to visit some of the most famous sites of the region, such as Notre Dame Cathedral and the Palais du Tau . Continue on to Epernay, the Capital of Champagne, where the most renowned Champagne maisons , such as Mercier, Perrier-Jouët, Fauillatte, Moët & Chandon, and many others await to be explored. The real marvel of Epernay, however, is the underground cellars located along the 100 km of tunnels which were dug out of chalk and run underground, beneath the streets of the town.

REASONS TO DISCOVER CHAMPAGNE
The region of Reims
Located less than two hours from Paris, this region is one of the most popular in Champagne because it houses numerous major Champagne houses and provides a lovely glimpse into the rich history of the area. The location where some 33 kings were crowned. There are also five sites located in the Reims region that have been classified by UNESCO as World Heritage sites :
- Notre Dame Cathedral
- The Abbey (and the Basilica) of Saint-Remi
- The Palais du Tau
- The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux in Châlons-en-Champagne
- The Basilica of Epine
History enthusiasts will be delighted in all that Verdun holds for them. One of the world’s greatest battles occurred here during World War One , a time in history that will never be forgotten. The agony of this battle lasted eleven months and resulted in 700,000 causalities, the largest number recorded for a single battle. Visit monuments commemorating this period such as the Douaumont ossuary comprised of 130,000 unidentified soldiers from the battlefield. Among other memorials is the “Bayonet Trench” which marks the location where a dozen rifles were found projecting out of the ground; below each weapon was a French soldier believed to be attacked by surprise.
Fortress of Sedan
This fortress’ significance dates back to the Franco-Prussian war . Author Émile Zola refers to the importance of this castle in his novel, La Débâcle, and illustrates Napoleon III’s struggle to conquer the Prussians. When the Prussia troops invaded Sedan and surrounded the fortress, Napoleon was forced to surrender in a neighboring town. The Battle of Sedan resulted in the overthrow of France’s Second Empire, therefore sealing the country’s fate. Experience a glimpse of history as you cycle to Sedan in the northern part of this region, which is moreover renowned for its remarkable rides.
Champagne Tourist Trail
This impressive tour of the various vineyards and cellars of Champagne stretches nearly 600 km and covers about 80 different stops . There are several different circuits to choose from, with differing themes, from historical tours to family friendly routes. The area is also perfect for cyclists and, of course, wine enthusiasts looking to experience some of the most exquisite vintages in the world.
Known internationally as the Capital of Champagne , this popular tourist location welcomes approximately 450,000 visitors a year from all over the world. Its popularity is due in part to its central location in the heart of the Champagne vineyards , and the copious international market it is home to. History lovers will treasure the 19th century champagne houses found along the world famous Avenue de Champagne. The real marvel of Epernay, however, is the underground cellars located along the 100 km of tunnels which were dug out of chalk and run underground, beneath the streets of the town. That is where some say the true beauty of this area lies.
CHAMPAGNE, OF COURSE !
Important Champagne houses and small producers alike await the visitor to be able to share their passion: Mumm, Mercier, Moet & Chandon, Joseph Perrier, Perrier-Jouet, Taittinger, Veuve Cliquot, and more. (you can visit all thoise places on our Champagne Cycling Tour)
Different slopes of Champagne vineyards: red, pink or white.
Most of the Champagne vineyards are between Reims and Epernay. Only Champagne produced in this region has the right to call itself “Champagne”. Other versions are often called “sparkling wines”which contributes to why the true Champagne is so expensive.
TO VISIT IN REIMS
Cathedral Notre dame de Reims ; Roman remains, with the oldest monument in Reims, the Porte de Mars (“Mars Gate”, so called from a temple to Mars in the neighbourhood). Palace of Tau , an archiepiscopal palace, built between 1498 and 1509, and in part rebuilt in 1675, which was occupied by the kings on the occasion of their coronation. Place Royale, with a statue of Louis XV, and the Place Cardinal-Luçon, with an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc. Geography
The Champagne region is located in northeastern France. There are 4 departments in the Champagne region: Ardennes, Marne, Haute-Marne, and Aube.
Champagne consists mainly of a chalk plateau and is best known as the home of the sparkling white wine: the Champagne. 30,000 hectares of Champagne vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see over the rolling hillsides, dotted with picturesque villages . Most of the exported French champagne comes from the area around the cities of Reims and Epernay. The Champagne region is also known for the raising of sheep and the manufacture of wool being part of the economy.
ON OUR CHAMPAGNE CYCLING TOUR
To visit on the Marne route: Domaine de Bacchus in Reuil, Statue du Pape Urbain II in Chatillon sur Marne: this statue, dedicated to Pope Urbain II, was launched in 1887. Urbain II was born in Chatillon sur Marne around 1040. Château de Boursault: inspired by the famous château Chambord in the Loire Valley, this castle was built between 1843 and 1848 for Madame Cliquot, owner of the Champagne producing company Veuve Cliquot. Ecole 1900 in Oeuilly: an ecomuseum with the reconstitution of a school and a village from the early 1900s.
CHAMPAGNE FOOD AND WINE
- The boudin blanc de Rethel (white pudding)
- The andouillette de Troyes (small pork tripe sausages)
- The jambon des Ardennes (dried ham)
- Cheese: the creamy Chaource and the Langres (matured with marc de Champagne alcohol)
- Biscuits Roses de Reims (cookies): great with Champagne!
CHAMPAGNE HISTORY
In the early Middle Age period, Champagne France was a duchy under Merovingian rulers. By the 10th century, the duchy of Champagne became a hereditary estate known as the county of Champagne. Then, in the 12th and 13th century, the county became well-known for commercial fairs where merchants from all Europe were present. At that period, the Capital was the city of Troyes. Finally, in 1314, Champagne became a province of the royal domain of France when the count of Champagne , who had inherited the area, succeeded as Louis X, king of France. The successive wars of the Revolution, the Empire and the beginnings of the Republic left, until the signing of the Reims Armistice in 1945, painful scars of history on the soil of Champagne.
The Champagne-Ardennes region is rich in events that made history of France and has preserved several vestiges such as the Cathedral of Reims. For a thousand years, the cathedral was one of the privileged places in French history, providing the setting for the coronation of kings. Mostly built during the 13th century and completed in the 15th century, this monument is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, remarkable not only for its architecture but also for its dimension.

Travel and Cycling Tips
- We loved our Provence with Youngsters cycle trip including our 3 kids aged 8, 12 and 14. Perfect distances and quiet, flat roads with some lovely village stops en route. We did a few 20km practise runs at home to ensure we could all do the distance (mainly the 8 year old) which was enough training...on the trip we stopped a few times for hot chocolates, then lunch in a field (usually a picnic with local produce). By the time we arrived at our destination early afternoon we were ready to chill out at one of the wonderful B&Bs selected for the tour. Highly recommended!

- If you are planning a cycling vacation, I highly recommend this company! The Geneva to Alpe d'Huez tour was amazing! Everything I expected and more. Bruno, Deanna, Lucy and the team are very helpful and responsive and they ensured we had a lovely trip! I would definitely do this again!
- Fantastic company - they provide : 1)first class carbon road bikes ( Wilier), inner tubes , pumps, tools to fix your bike en-route. When our bike was broken, they found and delivered replacement in an hour! 2)great hotels - mostly all of them has swimming pools, great meals and lovely rooms 3) maps and navigators with detailed advises on restaurants, places of interest etc 4)they offer most picturesque and interesting routes, besides, you can choose between short and long options which is handy.
- The selfguided trip from Geneva at the first stages of Via Rhone, through a wonderful landscape and Seyssel, Chapagneux, Perouges to Lyon, the accommodation was splendid
- The owner of Cyclomundo Bike Tours, Bruno, is a man of integrity. He responded quickly to my email questions. While on our trip, he and his staff were always supportive of our requests, including driving two hours to pick us up during a rain storm. I recommend Cyclomundo as an excellent, honest company to do business with.

- Cyclomundo did a superb job - wonderful accommodations and food (we recommend the upgrade) and very good equipment. The bikes were new hybrids and we think this makes sense. Road bikes would have had some problems with gravel on some of the smaller trails. Provence is absolutely beautiful - vineyards and historic villages. We suggested to Cyclomundo that they consider bike GPS - the maps and directions were good but sometimes a bit confusing. Overall we would definitely use Cyclomundo again!

Drink in the sights and the famous bubbly as you explore the valleys and vineyards in the lush green region of Champagne-Ardenne by bike says Janine Marsh…
From the Meuse Valley, an outstanding natural area in the Ardenne Massif, to Reims, Epernay and Châlons-en-Champagne with their many Champagne houses offering tours and tastings. From the great lakes between Troyes and Saint Dizier to the Forêt d’Orient national park – there are endless possibilities for exploring the region by bike. The green way routes are accessible to all levels and abilities and offer four themed areas.
Longer circuits – up to a day’s worth of cycling on cycle tracks and quiet roads
Long distance cycling routes – these routes run across the region and link Champagne Ardenne to other regions and countries
Mountain biking – dedicated off road areas
Champagne Cycling Map and itineraries
Pick up a copy of a handy pocket guide from tourist offices in the area – they will offer lots of ideas to help you make the most of exploring the region. There are designated routes, special itineraries and useful information like bike-friendly accommodation, bike rental locations and useful services for cyclists.
After a day of cycling, relax in one of the many lovely restaurants all of which of course serve the local drink Champagne and local produce like Troyes tripe sausage, Ardennes ham, Chaource or Langres cheese. Enjoy a well-earned rest in a delightful chambre d’hôtes, hotel, a moated castle or something more unusual – a tree house, horse-drawn caravan or yurt.
