Warner Bros. Discovery has produced and is set to launch a new docu-series ‘ Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica ’ revealing the exclusive behind-the-scenes view of ultra-luxury cruise ships.

The series showcases life on board Scenic Eclipse, the world’s first discovery yacht  operated by Scenic, with an access-all-areas look at world-class professionals at sea and key characters from the Scenic crew taking viewers on a voyage of discovery.

From gastronomic cuisine and personalised in-suite butler services to soaring above by helicopter and diving deep below in a custom-designed submarine, Warner Bros. Discovery documents what it takes to journey to some of the world’s most pristine and culturally rich travel destinations across seven continents, including Antarctica, while delivering life-changing travel experiences for guests.

About the show.

The daily highs and lows on board an adventure passenger ship. Crossing continents, from tropical waters to ice-filled seas, this is the journey of a lifetime.

The Beginning

Antarctica bound, the team must prepare the first expedition to Jacques Cousteau Island before attempting the first night-time commercial sub-dive in Huatulco, Mexico.

Before they can attempt the first ever commercial submersible night dive in Huatulco, Mexico, the team must navigate a category 4 hurricane.

Jason and guests go on an emotional hike in Guatemala. Jed leads a cacao mission in El Salvador, and Erwan confronts strong currents in Costa Rica.

Dishing Up Dreams

Intense weather changes the plan for the ship's expedition of Chile. Meanwhile, Chef Tom gives Chef Strawberry the opportunity of a lifetime.

The Narrows

The English Narrows provide navigational challenges. Plus, the crew carry out safety training for Antarctica before exploring the Chilean Fjords.

Breaking New Ground

Chef Tom challenges Chef Nik, as Captain Radomir strives to achieve a first for all on the Discovery yacht - setting foot on land at the treacherous Cape Horn.

Be Prepared

Captain Erwan must provide a "wind block." Meanwhile, the Drake Passage delivers a rare weather event and penguins prove to be a highlight for guests.

‘Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica’ Premiers on Discovery Channel

The new docuseries titled “Maritime Masters: Expedition Antarctica,” filmed onboard the Scenic Eclipse premiered on Discovery channel on Saturday, May 13.

The five-episode series will be broadcast every Saturday on Discovery channels in the USA, showcasing voyages to some of the most remote and pristine areas of the planet, according to the company.

The series features four key personnel including Scenic Eclipse Captain Erwan Le Rouzic, Expedition Operations Director Jason Flesher and VP Hotel Operations Chef Tom Goetter.

Captain Erwan Le Rouzic said: “I was excited to be able to show the passion and commitment we go to on The World’s First Discovery Yacht. It’s still very mysterious for many people, how we operate an expedition yacht and the complexity of what’s happening on board at all times during the voyage.”

Expedition Operations Director Jason Flesher added: “For me, being part of a project like this was very humbling, and very exciting. No other expedition ship provides the diversity and depth of immersive experiences. We are the pioneers with helicopters and submersibles, exploration with our inquisitive guests seeking adventure.

VP Hotel Operations Chef Tom Goetter said: “It’s great to show the culinary aspect of Scenic Eclipse. It is not only an incredible Discovery Yacht on a global expedition, but we also take guests on a culinary journey to explore a diversity of cuisines too. Scenic Eclipse Maritime Masters Documentary

Scenic have announced a five-episode, access-all-areas documentary series launching from 4th June 2023 on Discovery+.

The Scenic Eclipse Maritime Masters series will allow viewers to witness the behind-the-scenes of the ship and be introduced to the Masters: Scenic Eclipse Captain Erwan Le Rouzic, Expedition Operations Director Jason Flesher and VP Hotel Operations Chef Tom Goetter.

Episode Two: Dishing Up Dreams

In this episode, Jason takes the guests on an awe-inspiring hike in Guatemala. In El Salvador, Jed, a crew member, leads a cacao mission whilst Erwan battles rough seas in Costa Rica. Due to the weather conditions, Josh, the Cruise Director, finds himself under pressure to throw a surprise Halloween party for the guests alongside Chef Tom giving an incredible opportunity to Chef Strawberry.

Episode Three: Journey To The End Of The World

Navigational obstacles occurs when the ship sails through the English Narrows. Meanwhile, the first ever submarine dive takes place in the Chilean Fjords. By setting foot on land at the precarious Cape Horn, Captain Radomir strives to achieve a ‘first’ for the Discovery Yacht.

Episode Four: Deception Island

The ship experiences a rare weather occurrence whilst traversing the Drake Passage and so Captain Erwan must provide a ‘wind block’. The biggest highlight for guests in this episode is the appearance from the penguins.

Episode Five: New Beginnings

In the final episode, the Discovery Team lead a memorable penguin expedition on Danco Island. Brendon and Jason conduct a search for 10,000 year old glacier ice to make an Antarctica-themed cocktail. We witness the expert navigation of the Lemaire Channel by Captain Erwan. Crew and guests undertake the ‘polar plunge’ – a swim in the freezing cold waters.

Suri Cruise Graduates From NY High School, Might Attend Carnegie Mellon University

Suri Cruise entered the world in perhaps the most public way possible: the infant child of actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made her public debut in the pages of Vanity Fair, the center of a lush photoshoot by storied photographer Annie Leibovitz in 2006. A few years later, the famous couple split, and since then, sightings of the father and daughter have dwindled , as has Suri’s presence in the public eye . Her low profile might be why Gen Xers and older Millennials are reacting with disbelief this weekend, as they learn that the tiny, Leibovitz-photographed baby is now a young adult who just graduated from high school.

Page Six reports that until Friday’s graduation ceremony, Suri Cruise was a student at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts , a public high school in New York City with a stunning list of famous graduates including Awkwafina , Sarah Paulson , and Zazie Beetz . Unlike many of the school’s alumni, Suri was globally famous even before her freshman year at the school, and the subject of much speculation given her father’s controversial faith .

Some might cite that faith as the reason Tom Cruise was not there for Suri’s landmark event. A beaming Holmes, who appears to have been responsible for Suri’s upbringing since her 2012 divorce from Tom Cruise, watched from the audience at Manhattan’s United Palace Theatre, as her 18-year-old daughter crossed the stage to claim her diploma.

There’s always the possibility, of course, that Cruise’s ongoing shooting schedule for the next Mission Impossible film prevented his attendance, or that he had another commitment he couldn’t pass up. Or perhaps the name on the invitation to the ceremony threw him: According to Page Six, LaGuardia’s graduation program didn’t list a “Suri Cruise,” only a “Suri Noelle.”

That’s the same name Holmes and Cruise’s daughter used in the playbill for her school’s spring musical, but it's unclear if Suri has legally changed her name. (Either way, “Noelle” is a likely nod to Holmes, as the moniker is her middle name.) As it has with other famous progeny , the answer to Suri's name enigma might become clearer this fall, when Suri will reportedly matriculate at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Carnegie Mellon University.

Galveston and MSC Cruises announce $140M terminal development

A recent announcement by Galveston Wharves and MSC Cruises (the world's third-largest cruise shipowner) marks a significant milestone in the expansion of cruise and commercial shipping traffic at Port Galveston (Texas USA) .

This year, construction will commence on the port's 4th cruise terminal, set to become the homeport for the 1112-foot MSC Seascape ship starting in November 2025.

The US$140 million development follows two years of negotiations between Galveston Wharves and MSC Cruises, culminating in a 20-year agreement with options for 5-year extensions. The project involves transforming a former Del Monte Foods cargo warehouse into a 165,000-square-foot cruise terminal, complete with a parking garage, passenger boarding bridge, and other infrastructure enhancements.

Galveston, a maritime commercial hub since 1825, boasts an 840-acre port located just 45 minutes from open seas. The port's infrastructure supports its growing cruise, cargo, and commercial operations. The early 1980s saw the port's shift towards tourism, and its current 40-Year Strategic Master Plan envisions further improvements to enhance public access and enjoyment. The agreement with MSC is a key part of this strategic expansion.

As the 4th most popular cruise homeport in the USA, Galveston hosted 1.49 million cruise tourists in 2023, marking a 43% increase from 2022 and a swift recovery from the COVID downturn in 2020 when passenger numbers dropped below 500,000. Cruise ship traffic continues to be a crucial component of the port's future.

In November 2022, RCI-Royal Caribbean International inaugurated Galveston's 3rd cruise terminal. This US$125 million facility allows the port to accommodate RCI's Oasis Class vessels - the world's largest passenger ships .

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
