Beijing hutong tours are a great way to see Chinese daily life up close. They’re popular because ever since China it opened its doors to foreign tourism decades ago, it and its people have fascinated travelers.

Today we continue to be intrigued by the differences in our cultures and the newness and exoticism of this place that still retains its air of mystery.

In addition to being awed by sites such as the Forbidden City, many visitors to Beijing are also struck by the enormity of the modern city, which is crammed with expansive stretches of modern buildings, many constructed prior to the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Hutongs About the City

But about the city you’ll also see the Hutongs, the old neighborhoods of narrow lanes that originated during the Yuan Dynasty in the 13 th century and connect the homes and little courtyards, which were once so common to Chinese life. For many, the hutongs are where the real culture of old Beijing is found, although many of these old neighborhoods have been cleared to make room for apartment buildings.

Beijing hutung

Beijing hutong tours are popular and sometimes include a visit to a Chinese home with the opportunity to speak with the resident, via an interpreter, of course.

Yes, it’s a sanitized tour that’s orchestrated, but it’s still fascinating to look about and see the living conditions of the Chinese and walk around their homes. You find yourself constantly peeking everywhere just to see how life there compares with the rest of the world.

Pedicabs At the Ready

One morning on an excursion about Beijing, I joined a group for a tour of a hutong home. Since the old streets were all so narrow and winding, we were brought out there in pedicabs, bicycle-powered versions of the old rickshaw. With two to a pedicab, our conga line of about 15 wound its way through the narrow streets and when we got near the home we were to visit, the drivers dropped us off about a block away.

Speaking with a resident on a Beijing hutong tour

The home itself was rather drab and non-descript, sparsely decorated although well kept and neat. It had a main room with a small kitchen area and bedroom and we were free to wander about it. Outside was a small enclosed courtyard with a few trees.

Although we had our own tour guide, we were met inside by another guide who gave us a short talk and did all of the interpreting with the woman who lived there. Through him she briefly told us about her home and the hutong after which we asked questions.

Most, if not all, of us found the chat with the woman quite interesting, even though it was, obviously, “sanitized.”

Hutong Life

When asked about the lack of modern plumbing facilities, she said that 25 families used same public toilet, adding “it is very busy in the morning.” We were also told the hutongs lack central heating and their outdoor cooking pots add to the city’s pollution problem. I felt the facts were supplied to bolster the government’s apartment-building program, which I later learned was unpopular with Beijingers.

In response to another question about pensions, she told us that the age to get a pension for a factory worker is 55 for a male and 50 for a woman, 60 and 55 if you work for the government.

“People get an average of 60% of their salary as their pension,” she told us through the interpreter.

Beijing hutung

When she told us her three pet turtles were named 1,2 and 3, a British tourist in our group promptly announced he was renaming them gin, tonic and ice.

After about a half-hour we were brought back to our pedicabs and continued our hutong tour of the HouHai district riding up Tobacco Pipe Lane to Lotus Lane, which was lined with expensive bars. All of the streets were crowded, which didn’t slow down our drivers as they moved along to a cacophony of bicycle bells.

It was quick and sanitized but fun nevertheless.

Traveler Reviews

We just booked one of the drivers off the street so did not book a recognized tour as such. It is quite funny, they all seem to wait for each other (ie: after a few of them have a booking) and then go off in a line together?. Our driver stopped off for a toilet stop (we certainly didn't want to use those toilets!!! so make sure you go before getting on the rickshaw lol). The house we stopped of was owned by an artist (who was lovely and let us take his picture and photos in the house etc.) so the house is decorated with his paintings which is nice but maybe not what a regular house would look like? All up I think the tour only went about 1 to 1 1/2 hours so expect if you booked the tour this would include your pick up and drop off time?

We walked around the Hutongs, along various narrow streets. The rickshaw ride thereafter was fun and definitely worth doing. Not as good as rickshaw ride in Delhi.

This was fun to do but there was only one stop for the driver to go to the bathroom. We photographed whatever we could shoot along the way. Thank goodness our guide had explained the history, etc of. HUTONGS.

I'm not entirely sure if this was the tour we were on, but we did see the Hutongs by rickshaw. The rickshaw ride itself was uninteresting, but the neighborhood we saw was very different from all the high rises that you see elsewhere in Beijing. Seeing the Hutongs is worth the time and effort for that perspective.

The company called me one before the tour and claimed that all rickshaw companies would not have to drive for the next two weeks due to a parade. So I got no tour of Hutongs!

This was a nice private trip although many of the places I felt obligated to buy things. I had a local phone number so the guide and driver were able to contact me to confirm my pick up time. We visited a silk factory to see how silk was made, but I felt very pressured to buy here. Afterward, we went to a pearl market, also very cool to see how freshwater pearls are harvested. We then went on a brief rickshaw ride to a family's home in the old hutongs, very nice to see! We wrapped up with a tea ceremony where I also felt obligated to buy. Just be aware prior to going to all these places! Very nice tour with Michael and nice to see some local Beijing traditions.

We did a brief tour of the Hutong district by rickshaw and had lunch in a local residents home. The food was delicious, the hosts very welcoming. Hutong area is packed with history and was fascinating to be taken there by rickshaw. Hard work negotiating these small streets and alleys for the drivers. Recommend.

Since we stayed at an Airbnb, it was difficult to find a good location to meet up with the driver and guide. We were able to use WeChat to chat with our guide to get picked up. I suggest contacting your guide in advanced to find an easy hotel to meet up at. Our guide Gale was very friendly and informative. She spoke perfect English. We learned SO many amazing things about Chinese culture. She had a very welcoming and kind personality. Ask for Gale on your trip. This was a nice short trip through the old Hutong houses. We traveled by Rickshaw into the small alley ways as if going back in time. After that, we saw a traditional home and learned about fengshui. Then we toured the bell tower and got to see a show! Lastly we had a traditional tea ceremony. The host of the ceremony explained the different benefits of the 6 teas we got to try. Afterwards you have the opportunity to purchase some of the tea you got to taste. Some other reviews mention that they were forced to buy these things, but as we found, it is not required you buy anything. You can just taste the tea as it is included in your tour. However, as a tea lover I bought two tins and was happy to support that shop. We were offered to go to the pearl shop, I didn't have any interest in buying pearls, so we declined. Overall, it was a great learning experience!

I booked this tour for my father who accompanied me on a business trip to Beijing. This trip was my 70th birthday present to him. Imagine my anger and disappointment when this scam of a tour never showed up to our hotel despite calling the number provided all morning with no answer . Finally we called trip advisor customer service who told us the tour was canceled and that they had emailed me to notify me. False. I received no notice of cancellation and NO REFUND! I am so very upset as my father was very excited for this tour and instead spent the day sitting around in the hotel by himself as I was at work. As a person who travels frequently for work, I am extremely disappointed in Trip Advisor for not offering better resolution or or refund. They should be more careful on what is advertised and endorsed on their site.

Should you visit Moscow or Beijing?

Which is cheaper to visit which is more expensive for vacation.

Which city should you visit? Read on to compare the activities as well as the prices of travel for Moscow and Beijing. We'll break down costs for accommodation, food, transportation and more to help you learn more about these two destinations. Then, you can figure out if either of these two places are accessible based on your travel budget, schedule, and interests. So, let's dig into it.

Where Should I go: Moscow or Beijing?

Moscow is the capital of Russia and is notable for its important role in history. It's a very sprawling city with many museums and fascinating buildings. Ten percent of Russia's population lives in this capital city and it's a financial and political center for the country. The Moskva River weaves its way through the city and you will find most of the city's sights and attractions on the northern side of the river.

Beijing is the capital of China and, with 21.5 million people, it is the second most populated city in the world after Shanghai. It is a city that keeps pockets of its history hidden in old neighborhoods or back alleys, despite the constant change and modernization that goes on around it. As the capital city of China, there is plenty of history and culture. You can still get yourself lost in one of the last remaining hutongs, which are old neighborhoods that remain untouched by the city's modernization. The alleys that weave between the old homes are lined with drying clothes, corner markets, and people going about their daily lives the way they have for centuries. Surrounding these hutongs you'll find modern buildings and a booming economy, all threatening to destroying these last bits of Beijing's history. Beijing offers a glimpse into a microcosm that represents the entire country of China. Make sure you give yourself enough time in China to truly experience Beijing. You can pass a lot of time soaking up life in the city, which remains as diverse as the country it resides within.
