Best PRIVATE Tours To Take in FLORENCE in 2024 and WHY

Sean Finelli Last Updated: October 30, 2023

Don’t want to be shoulder to shoulder in group tours? No problem! You’re still going to want to visit the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia, and other attractions in Florence, so we have the perfect solution. Here are the best private tours in Florence and why you should take them.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to Florence? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you need it. Check out our guide to Florence for more planning resources, our best private Florence tours for a memorable trip, and how to see Florence in a day (with itinerary).

The Absolute BEST Private Tours To Take in Florence

Private tours offer a lot of benefits that make them downright better. You have a more personal experience with your guide and get more input on the narrative.

Want to interrupt and ask a question? Go ahead, you’re in control of this tour! The downside is they obviously cost more than a small group tour. That said, we’ll be sure to let you know when a small group tour might be a good alternative to save money.

How to see FLORENCE in a Day Guide

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  Florence Guide for more info.

Private Uffizi Tours

florence walking tour private

If you’re unfamiliar, the Uffizi was originally built to be the offices of the Medici family and is directly connected to the Palazzo Signoria (Palazzo Vecchio), which is the seat of government in Florence. The gallery is one of the world’s first public museums, opening its doors as early as 1765. The gallery was donated by the last Medici heir in 1737 under a pact that the works of art could never leave the city.

Today, it is one of the most popular museums in Europe. The Uffizi is also one of the greatest collections of Renaissance art in the world. Joining a private guide will bring shock and awe to your face as they walk through a Renaissance timeline that evolves from painting to painting.

While small group Uffizi tours are great value and by far our most popular tour in Florence, a private tour of the Uffizi is something you should definitely consider if you really want to dig into the gallery with a passionate, knowledgeable guide of Florence. See also our guide on the top things to see and how to visit the Uffizi .

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Uffizi Gallery tour is worth it .

Private Accademia Tours

florence walking tour private

Galleria Accademia in Florence, most often referred to simply as Accademia, is the home to Michelangelo’s David, which is one of the greatest sculptures ever created. Accademia is small, with some other things to see, but not on the same level as the Uffizi Gallery, Vatican Museums, or the Louvre.

That said, the gallery definitely warrants a tour. It’s usually a 45-minute to 1-hour portion of a larger walking tour of Florence’s best attractions. Our private Florence walking tour is easily the best way to acclimate yourself to the city and is run by some of Florence’s greatest and most sought-after guides.

While the private tour is an overall better experience, we run the exact same format tour in a small group , and it is run by the very same guides, which makes it excellent value. Another interesting option is our small group Accademia tour at night, which offers fewer crowds! Definitely take a look at either tour and our other resources on Accademia, specifically how to visit the Accademia Gallery .

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if an Accademia and David tour is worth it .

Private Tours To Tuscany and Wine Country

florence walking tour private

For me, it would be a hard choice to decide between seeing Tuscany’s wine country and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. One depicts the creation of man by God and the other is what man can create in collaboration with God. Both are exquisite.

Due to transportation costs, private tours of Tuscany tend to be pricey. That said, if it’s split between a few people, they become great value and a lot of fun. We offer both small group and private tours of Tuscany that dive deep into the wine country.

For private tours and experiences, we have a tour that departs from Florence to visit an amazing organic vineyard in Chianti, Siena, and another small bucolic village in Tuscany. There’s a ton included, which you can read about in our Private Wine Day in the Chianti Hills from Florence . Alternatively, we offer another very similar tour as a small group if you’re looking for more value for your money.

If you want to avoid too much time in a car, we run a helicopter wine tour from Rome which is also available from Florence by request. It is the ultimate option for anyone who doesn’t want to get car sick and has some extra money to spare! There is also a small group tour to Tuscany by Vespa , which is highly rated and an exciting option for anyone prepared to ride a scooter through the Tuscan countryside.

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our article on the best Florence tours to take and why .

Private Food Tours

florence walking tour private

A food tour is something that we always recommend as a small-group experience. Much of the draw is socializing with others! Our flagship food tour is our Florence local food tour in Santo Spirito . Definitely check it out along with our other food and wine experiences in Florence.

Private Tour To the Leaning Tower of Pisa

florence walking tour private

Pisa is a truly unique experience with a lot to talk about, which is why we recommend a private tour ! Your guide will get into the details of why the tower is leaning and what officials are doing to keep it from falling.

The tower is only one of many attractions in the area that you’ll explore. If you’re looking to get better value, check out our small group version. It does not explore Vinci, but it does go to the walled town of Lucca, which is quite the experience.

Florence Private Guide

By paolo russo.

From the moment I set foot in Florence I felt like the city had adopted me. We had found each other; Florence, my true home! Whilst I am not a “native Florentine”, I am proud to say I am a “chosen Florentine”. Right from the start of my life in Florence, I was overwhelmed by all that this city has to offer. Such abundance and generosity, especially, of course, in art and history. There are so many exciting things to read, see and study about this beautiful, captivating city, Florence.

Your guide will collect you  either at your accommodation or at a pre-arranged meeting point of your choosing.

Visit The Ponte Vecchio With Your Guide

Ponte Vecchio a Firenze, Florence, Italy

Your walking tour will begin at one of the most iconic and symbolic locations in all of Florence, the  Ponte Vecchio  or ‘old bridge’ across the famous  Arno River . With a history dating back to the year 996, its current form has survived since 1345 you will have the opportunity to  visit some of the unique shops and jewelers  that line the historic structure.

Your next stop is outside the stunning 13th century Gothic  Duomo Cathedral  with Brunelleschi’s famed dome. There you will also admire the  Baptistry doors  – Florence’s ‘Gates of Paradise’.

Historic Public Squares and Cultural Centers

You’ll continue by visiting some of the city’s most important squares, including Piazza Della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, and Piazza Repubblica, tracing its history from the time of Ancient Rome through to its use as the city’s Jewish Ghetto and into modernity.

Also included in the tour is the Orsanmichele Church, where you can rub the nose of the Porcellino pig for good luck!

Want to experience more of Florence?Choose from some of our options add-ons below or  contact us directly to create a bespoke itinerary !

Optional Add-Ons For This Tour

Another fun and hands-on activity perfect for both children & adults.

Prior to arriving at the leather workshop, your guide will have already told you about the history of leather making and its influences on the Florentine economy over the ages. Now it’s time to hear from an actual family who is still practicing these ancient techniques, but of course with a modern touch! You will go behind-the-scenes to their workshop, see the tools &  machines they use, AND choose an item that you would like to create. Choices range from belts , coin purses, card cases, key-chain holders, bracelets, coasters & glasses cases.

You will be able to then take home your creation to show off your newfound leather-making skills to you, your family, and friends at home!

This add-on extends the tour by 2.5 hours.

Florence is the city of artisans  & one of the most ancient arts in the city is that of perfume making. During the workshop, you will be taught by a master perfumier which is like a sommelier is to wine so you know you are in the most capable hands.

Together you will explore the mysteries of this ancient profession and learn all about the production process. Then you will get hands-on and create your own, bespoke perfume which you will then be able to take home with you as a truly unique memory of your time in Florence.

This add-on extends the tour by 2 hours.

There are a few things you need to experience during your holiday in Italy. One of them that cannot be missed is local food and wine. The Italians are very proud of their local dishes, so we decided at Luxe to offer you an upgrade that is designed to make your tummies grumble in anticipation!

When you choose to add the food tastings to your Florence tour you will get to taste some local specialties including Coccoli & porchetta from one of the best-hidden street food places in Florence. You will visit a local bakery where you will have the opportunity to try the famous local schiacciata bread and some traditional pastries in the region. Your private guide will then take you to Luxe’s favorite gelato place to end this tasting session with a delicious gelato.

This add-on extends the tour by 1 hou r.

Why Choose Luxe For Your Walking Tour of Florence?

This enchanting tour encapsulates the essence of Florence, but what really makes it distinct over others is our guide’s humor, passion, knowledge, and ability to bring the city’s extraordinary history to life for you.

Quite simply our officially licensed guides are the difference makers between simply admiring the beauty of the city, or leaving feeling like you have made a connection to this incredible place. We believe our private tours provide additional value that is just not found on large group tours where you feel that your day is being determined by others’ schedules and interests rather than yours.

Our tours are fully flexible and customizable, so if you would like some more information on how we can tailor your schedule to suit a family tour, or if you have a specific interest in an area of Florence that you would like to explore in more depth with your guide,  then let us know by completing our online inquiry form and we will get back to you .

Read more about Your Private Walking Tour Florence

Your private walking tour of Florence is curated to your schedule and can begin at any hour that is convenient for you. You will meet your tour guide at the centrally located Piazza della Signoria, and the tour will begin in what is considered, an outdoor museum. You will then begin your stroll towards Palazzo Vecchio, marveling at the statues and fountains flanking the main facade.

Your guide will take you towards the picturesque Ponte Vecchio, and share with you the fascinating history of Florence’s longest-standing bridge. Admire the numerous jewelry shops nestled along both sides of this Medieval bridge, enjoy its colorful charm, and take a few moments to snap some photos as this is one of the most photographed sites in Florence.

Your tour continues as you stroll through the charming streets where some of the greatest artists have walked – Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, and Botticelli. You will make a stop at the Piazza della Repubblica. Nowadays it is lined with quaint cafes and hotels, but it was once home to an Ancient Roman Forum and has suffered many changes throughout time.

Next, it is on to the unique Duomo made of green, white, and pink local marble, crowned with Brunelleschi’s Dome which is said to have been inspired by the magnificent engineering of the Pantheon in Rome. Right next to the Duomo is an eight-sided building which is the Baptistery. Admire its Holy Door, coined as the Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti, thanks to the opulent beauty of the gold reliefs which serve to tell the story of the Old Testament – a truly unique Renaissance masterpiece.

Your Florence walking tour will close with a visit to the famous Galleria dell’Accademia, where you will enjoy skip-the-line entrance tickets. Michelangelo’s original David is a majestic statue that is sure to impress at 17 feet high, this iconic piece was completed when the artist was only 29 years old.

UPGRADE YOUR TOUR & ADD THE DUOMO OR BELL TOWER CLIMB

Add the possibility of climbing the Duomo 30 minutes after the tour is over. By adding the optional add-on, we will provide you with skip-the-line timed tickets to climb to the top of the Duomo. In case it is sold out, you will be able to climb the bell tower of the Church. In addition, the tickets also include access to the Museo del Duomo. Please bear in mind that these are subject to availability and that we will need the full names and dates of birth of all participants to secure your climb.

This Tour Includes

  • Piazza della Signoria
  • Ponte Vecchio

We did the private walking tour of Florence with the Duomo and the Academia to see the David statue. After this we did the food tour and gelato making class. All of the activities were amazing and I would definitely recommend looking into the tours offered by LivTours.

At Florence with Locals, we’ve handpicked the finest private guides that Florence has to offer. These expert guides have years of experience under their belts, are fluent in English, and possess a comprehensive knowledge of the city that is second to none.

But how did we select these top-notch guides? The answer is simple: our senior guides. So, you can trust that when you book a private tour with us, you’re getting the cream of the crop in terms of guides.

High standards

We hold our private guides to the highest standards at Florence with Locals. Each of our guides has an extensive background in Florence’s rich history and culture, having studied for years and passing rigorous exams to become licensed tour guides.

But what sets our guides apart is their love for their city and dedication to making your experience unforgettable. They take pride in their work and make it their mission to make you feel like Florence is the best city in the world – and that you’re right at home here. Our guides are only delighted when you’re eager to return to Florence as soon as possible!

Unsurprisingly, many of our customers hail from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia and return to Florence repeatedly. With such dedicated and knowledgeable guides, it’s no wonder they’re doing a great job of making our customers fall in love with this beautiful city.

The price of booking private tours of Florence

If you hire a tour guide to Florence with locals, the price is 80 Eur/hour*. (To the price for the guide, you must add the cost of tickets (per person).)

The advantage being this is a fixed price for up to 6 participants. It can be expensive for a couple or a small family of 3. Still, for 4-5 persons, the tour will cost like a group tour, with the significant advantage of being private, while for parties of more than 5, it even becomes less expensive than a group tour.

We also serve large private groups: if you are visiting Florence for a party of 9 or more, we will organize a personal experience that will cost you (per person) less than a group tour with other people. How? Let’s discover our secret.

Fair prices

At Florence with Locals, we believe in offering fair prices for our tours – and we achieve this by cutting out the middleman. You see, the tourism industry is filled with wholesalers, mediators, and retailers, who all take a cut of the revenue. Unfortunately, this often means that guides are underpaid, and the final price for the customer is much higher than it needs to be.

By booking a tour of Florence with us, you’ll be paying your guide directly. There are no middlemen or hidden fees – just a direct transaction from the tour provider to you, the customer.

Regarding city tours, the guide is the most crucial factor in making your experience exceptional. Agencies that organize tours often need to improve their role, especially regarding walking tours with museum admissions. The truth is, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to do a good job – what you need is a friendly, knowledgeable guide. And that’s precisely what you’ll get when you book with us.

Our Florence guides have a wealth of knowledge and creativity. If unexpected circumstances arise during your tour, they can always find enjoyable alternatives to ensure your day is well-spent. Florence is a treasure trove of breathtaking sights and engaging activities, and with a private guide, you’ll always have exciting options to explore.

While hiring a private guide may seem expensive, their expertise is worth every penny. Alternatively, if you choose a group tour and an issue arises, it may result in the time being cancelled. Although you’ll receive a refund, you’ll also lose a day of your precious holiday.

Thank you for considering us! We would love the opportunity to show you the best of Florence.

Florence private Walking Tour overview

Florence is an open-air museum: walking through the small streets of the Medieval city, more often than you think, suddenly a large square opens in front of you showing a wonder of history and architecture, a statue, a fountain and so on. Unlike other historical cities, Florence has a very small city center, where all the attractions are concentrated. a  Florence private Walking Tour is the best tour to start your visit to Florence. There is one thing you can’t miss: Michelangelo’s David , inside the Accademia Gallery; with Florence Walking Tour you will satisfy your curiosities about the huge statue.

Florence Walking Tour tour starts in Piazza Santa Croce , in front of the Gothic Basilica. We will speak about the facade of the church and the various destinations of the square, moving on to Borgo de Greci, a small street where you will be surprised to know that you are walking in an ancient Roman amphitheater, where gladiators fought for their life and Christians were tortured. After admiring the place where Leonardo da Vinci painted his famous Mona Lisa, we will move to Piazza Della Signoria , the political center of Florence, filed with huge statues made to celebrate the Medici family. You will see Palazzo Vecchio , the Duke’s Palace but also the place where illustrious citizens, including a Medici, were imprisoned, where the Archbishop of Pisa was left hanging and where Savonarola was burned at stake.

The tour approaches the Uffizi building and Ponte Vecchio , the ancient bridge on the river Arno, filled with jewelries and crossed by the private passage of the Medici: the Vasari Corridor. You will see the damage Florence suffered during World War II before getting to the Loggia del Porcellino and to the church of Orsanmichele, a place dense with history where art, religion, money and power are inextricably connected. We will visit Piazza Della Repubblica , the ancient heart of Florence, to follow up with the Duomo complex, the religious center of the city, admiring wonders like Giotto’s Bell Tower and Brunelleschi’s Dome and entering the huge church to see the largest fresco ever made.

In the final stage of the tour, we will visit the Accademia Gallery , to see Michelangelo’s David, talking about the symbology of the statue and where it connects to the history of Florence.

Tour features

tour schedule, additional info, how is our florence private walking tour different, private tour.

First of all, it’s a private Florence Walking Tour . You won’t join any large or small group of tourists, it’s meant for you, your family and/or your friends. The Florence Tour Guide will be at your service for the duration of the tour, assisting you in buying skip the line tickets for the Accademia and explaining you whatever you want to know.

A classic tour… but different

Our Florence Walking Tour is not a rush through the highlights of the city, which is what most agencies and tour operators offer. If you want to check boxes on your list of attractions to mean “done”, probably this is not for you. We provide insider information, explain in detail the history of the buildings and we are available for any deviation from the standard path, not only to see different things but also to do different things; why not eat an ice cream, for example?

Is our Florence Walking Tour expensive for you? Any agency will price a private 3 hours Florence Walking Tour no less than € 400. Here you can hire directly a local genuine Florence Tour Guide, so you save any agency or middlemen fees, which means paying up to 60% less. The tour is certainly expensive if you travel alone, but it’s as low as € 56/person for a family of five , and if you travel with another family of friends, it gets even lower: much less than any 3-hour Florence Day Tour offered online and much better than any shared group tour.

Don’t Delay: Pre-Book A private Tour And See All The Highlights Of Florence

When booking a holiday, it is always a good idea to ensure that you have secured your accommodation and your flights. To this to do list, you can definitely add: booking a private guided tour. We provide superb private tours of Florence. Our tours are very popular so make sure to pre-book your tours as soon as possible so that you can enjoy this unmissable experience.

The highlights of Florence

It would be hard to find a city that is more packed with art and culture than Florence. From the majestic Duomo cathedral to the beautiful Uffizi gallery, and from the elegant and very romantic Ponte Vecchio to the Renaissance splendour of the very streets themselves, it seems that wherever you turn there are amazing buildings, galleries and statues to discover. But, in Florence, it is important to know where to look. Without a guide to show you where the main highlights are – and to reveal some of the city’s hidden gems too – you might find yourself blithely walking past sites of immense cultural and historical interest without even realising what they are. In short, the very best way to see all of the highlights of Florence is most certainly with a guide.

florence private walking tour

Why book a tour with us? Because we get you to all of the best places!

One key reason to book one of our tours is that we ensure that you get the full Florence experience, seeing all of the main buildings and points of interest that there are to see and getting inside cathedrals, galleries and more. After a tour with us, you will feel like you have really got to know the city in a way that you quite simply could not were you walking around Florence by yourself? So, what will you see with our walking tours of Florence Italy?

With our private walking tours we take you right into the heart of the city and make sure that you do not miss any of the highlights of Florence. Key highlights that you get to see on our walking tours include the Duomo (and here, we actually take you inside the cathedral itself; the cost of this visit is included in the cost of the tour overall) , the Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio to name but a few! This standard Florence private tour takes three hours, but you will also see the famous Accademia Gallery. To make things even easier for you, we include queue jump tickets to the Accademia in the cost of your three hour tour. So there will be no waiting around: you can go straight from highlight to highlight!

A private walking tour of Florence with exceptional prices

Another reason why choosing us as your Florence walking tour company is a good idea is that we offer excellent prices. Our private tours of Florence are ideal for groups of families or small art groups who want to see the city’s main cultural and historical attractions.

These prices are even more attractive when you consider all of the things that they encompass such as a tour inside the Duomo and a skip the queue ticket to the world famous Accademia. With our tours, for example, you find yourself paying just € 60 per hour – a truly budget friendly option. So why not snap up some tickets right now?

We manage to keep our prices so low because we make sure that the only place that tourists can buy their tours is through us. We will never let agencies or other middle men over inflate our prices. We are dedicated to keeping them consistently low all through the year.

The benefits of our private tours

Here, it is worth saying a word or two about why it is preferable to choose our tours, which are private, compared to other tours – which typically have maximum group sizes of around 25 in Florence. The private Florence tours that we offer make touring a much more enjoyable experience, as you get a much more personalised tour. Private tours are  more intimate and they also make it easier for you to ask questions and discuss things with the guide.

Our excellent guides make our tours stand out from the crowd

Our guides have to be one of the biggest selling points of our tours. They are all full licensed Florentine locals and all of them have had to study hard in order to pass an exam in local history and culture in order to be accepted to work for us.
