Plans for new cruise line from Cozumel to Havana, Cuba in the works
It could be in October 2022 when the Spanish company ” Atlantic International Cruises SL ” begins to operate its cruise in Cozumel since it is betting on short double Dwelling Port trips, which would generate commercial mobility in the destination.
This was explained by the Vice President of Operations, Captain Gilberto Ponce, and the Executive Director of the company, Henry Yanis, who visited the facilities of the Punta Langosta international terminal , in order to evaluate the arrival and market conditions.
The representative of the port area, Roberto Chami Lizarraga, led the verification tour to later hold a meeting at the offices, in which the possibility of this shipping line operating its vessel in the port was analyzed.
At this meeting, the Vice President of Operations explained that they are betting on a new market niche, through short seven-day trips with double Dwelling Port, which would allow the floating resort to spend the night in the port of Cozumeleño, which represents an opportunity for locals who want to travel, as well as for other markets who wish to go to Havana, Cuba, without requiring a visa.
According to the information provided, it is intended to take advantage of the Cancun airport facilities for all those tourists who want to combine their vacations between the Riviera Maya and the city of Havana; as well as Mexicans who want to know Cuba; as well as Cuban citizens who want to get to know Mexico (where one of their main activities is shopping) and also long-term European passengers in Cuba, so they can combine their trips and get to know the Riviera Maya .
There is a large market in Mexico of Mexicans and Cubans who can access to visit their families in the other country, who will be able to take advantage of the commercial strength of this country in a variety of products, which until now is only used by air and limited in cargo spaces due to the same characteristics of airplanes, so it is estimated that the project could be successful.
It is expected that it will be in October 2022 when the route will be lively, which would be operated with the concept “Cuba on board” with the boat that will be called “Pearl of the Caribbean”. The cruise liner measures 164 meters and has 400 cabins, seven decks and a capacity for one thousand 74 passengers, with which they will seek to position themselves in a hitherto unexplored market niche.

Things to Do on a Cuba Cruise with Carnival Cruise Lines
Dive in and have an authentic Cuban experience with a Carnival cruise to Cuba. You can sample delicious Cuban cuisine that the chefs take a tremendous amount of pride in creating. Travel the Havana streets in one of the famous ‘50s and ‘60s vintage vehicles that dominate the roads. When you are in Cuba, you truly feel as though you have been transported back in time. The pace is slower, food is fresher and people are nicer – and eager to share everything the island has to offer! Check out some of The Cruise Web’s recommended Cuba, Mexico, and Key West excursions below:
- Walking Tour of Old Havana and El Morro Fortress (Havana, Cuba) Discover Havana’s colonial past and some of its famous historical sites. You’ll visit the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabana fortress, which was integral in protecting Havana from pirates. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage with local residents working to preserve Cuban heritage and history, then you’ll continue your tour of Old Havana – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Havana Traditions and Flavors Tour (Havana, Cuba) Cuba has a strong culture and you’ll experience it best in the food, art, and music of Havana. During this tour you’ll sample traditional Cuban cuisine at a local restaurant, enjoy a live music performance, and learn about the ‘Cuban Marriage’ – a perfect combination of coffee, cigars, and rum – and how to enjoy them like a Cuban.
- Best of Havana Tour (Havana, Cuba) Want to experience the best of Havana in one day? Then this is the perfect tour for you! A few of the activities you’ll enjoy are: visiting a Cuban community project, exploring the Fortress de San Carlos de la Cabana, learning the cryptic symbolism present in the one of the largest Caribbean cemeteries, and learning how residents built Cuba’s iconic architecture.
- Swim with the Dolphins (Cozumel, Mexico) Interact with dolphins at Cozumel’s only certified dolphin park! After a brief training session on dolphin behavior, you’ll be fitted with a life vest and get to play around with the marine mammals! First a belly rub, then a dolphin kiss, and finally an unforgettable swim. Other optional activities include a sea lion show, snorkeling, and – of course – relaxing on the beach.
- Key West Parasailing (Key West, Florida) Treat yourself to magnificent views of Key West and its beachfront by soaring hundreds of feet above the ocean! You’ll experience the thrills of an offshore powerboat ride, parachuting, ballooning, and gliding. It’s a perfect way to truly see the natural beauty of Key West, Florida.
- Xenses Theme Park (Cozumel, Mexico) Challenge your perceptions and awaken your senses at the Xenses theme park in Cozumel, Mexico. You’ll experience a fantastic journey through air, land, and water that will awaken senses like never before as you “Live the Unimaginable” at Xenses Park.

Culture & History of the Cozumel Cruise Port
When the Mayans settled in Cozumel two thousand years ago, they dedicated the town to the Mayan goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel. The word “Cozumel” means “Land of the Swallow” in Mayan, symbolizing Ixchel’s favorite bird. Spanish settlers didn’t visit Cozumel until the 16th century, when the Cortés expedition traveled through. In 1520, Spanish crew members brought smallpox to Cozumel, devastating the Mayan population.
Cozumel’s popularity as a tourism destination skyrocketed in the 1960s when word of the island’s scuba diving potential traveled through the grapevine. Diving and charter fishing became central to the economy of the island. Today, Cozumel is a major port of call, welcoming over a million cruise passengers annually.
Cozumel Port Facilities & Location
The Cozumel cruise port is on the Western side of the island, where there happen to be three piers in total. The International Pier is one of the oldest and most-trafficked port areas. It’s about two miles to reach San Miguel, which you can access either on foot with a long walk or take a ten-minute taxi ride from the cruise port terminal. You’ll find food, shopping, and complimentary WiFi beyond the terminal.
Transportation in Cozumel
You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets required. Then, of course, there are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. Of course, it’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your sea legs during your stop in Cozumel.
Shopping Near the Cozumel Cruise Port
After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel also has plentiful shopping just two or three miles away from International Pier.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Local Cuisine
Cozumel’s cuisine is dominated by Mexican, American and international cuisine. Fresh seafood is always a good choice, and so is the cochinita pibil — a slow-roasted, highly seasoned pork dish. Cool off with a michelada , made with beer and freshly squeezed lime juice over ice in a salt-rimmed glass. Or keep it traditional with Mexico’s signature spirit, tequila.
For great deals and guaranteed stores, walk along the waterfront on Avenue Rafael E. Melgar, a mile-long strip in San Miguel. And be sure to check out the Chile Tequila Factory for a sampling of Mexico’s favorite spirit.

Cozumel is proof that Mexico can do ‘island flavor’ with the best of the Caribbean. It may not be the biggest island in the sea, but Cozumel offers a huge variety of things to do, see, taste and explore. This island just happens to be perched atop a coral reef, which promises hours of snorkeling or scuba diving fun. Cruises to Cozumel dock at the island’s heart — just minutes from San Miguel’s seafront shops and the white sand beach at Chankanaab National Park. Drift among star corals and sea fans on a Cozumel diving excursion or simply kick back on the beach beneath your own palm palapa as the turquoise waves roll in. With non-stop zip line action, ancient discoveries at the nearby Mayan ruins, or time spent with your toes in the sand, a cruise to Cozumel may just top your best vacations list… before you even get home.
