They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

Travel tips for a Fourth of July that's set to break records

big holiday trip

Luke Garrett

Airports around the United States are preparing for what could be the busiest Fourth of July travel season on record. The nation's roads are no different. Traffic could reach never-before-seen volumes over the Independence Day holiday.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a press release. “We anticipate this July 4th week will be the busiest ever.”

Nearly 71 million people are expected to make trips for the Independence Day travel period, AAA predicts.

Here's what to know about traveling for the holiday this week.

The TSA sets a new record and readies for another

Last week, a record-breaking 2.99 million passengers went through U.S. airports in a single day, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The agency said it's expecting a new travel record this week.

At Philadelphia International Airport, Gerardo Spero, the TSA’s federal security director for the airport, is dealing with an 8% passenger increase this year and is cautioning travelers to give themselves extra time.

“The best advice that I can offer is to get to the airport well before your ticketed departure time,” Spero said in a news release . “Now more than ever it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint."

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

There's usually no need to panic when planes make emergency landings. Here's why

Spero also said travelers can help each other out by being "efficient" in the security lines: take off shoes and belts preemptively, empty your pockets into your carry-on, and grab a bin early.

Over at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport — where travel volumes are up 5% — the TSA wants travelers to double-check their carry-on bags before they get to the airport.

“We are asking travelers to be good partners with TSA and ensure that they are prepared for the screening process," TSA Federal Security Director for Washington Greg Hawko said in a release . "Please don’t bring prohibited items in your carry-on luggage."

The busiest airport days are expected to be July 3, 7 and 8, according to flight website Hopper . The company projects Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver airports to be the ones with the most travelers.

This rise in summer air travel comes amid heightened attention on aircraft maker Boeing's quality control practices after a door plug blew out on a 737 Max jet in midair at the start of the year. Still, flying is the safest way to travel .

On the road

Nearly one in five Americans are set to drive more than 50 miles this Fourth of July travel season, according to an AAA forecast .

If you want to beat the traffic, drive early. INRIX, a transportation data provider, said driving on Monday should save travelers time. Any day after that, the best time to drive is before 10 a.m.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX , said in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal.”

The state put the first diverging diamond at a notoriously traffic-clogged intersection in Springfield where it could often take as long as 20 minutes to make a left turn.

When driving on the wrong side of the road is the right way to speed up traffic

If you are preparing for a longer road trip with family and friends, AAA recommends running through this checklist: check kids' car seats, bring an emergency pack (first aid, jumper cables, snacks and water) and map the route.

At the pump, drivers can expect lower gas prices than last year with a gallon costing an average of $3.50. In 2023, gas cost $3.53 per gallon and in 2022, it cost nearly $5.

This year, the states with the most expensive gas are California ($4.80), Hawaii ($4.71), Washington ($4.21), Oregon ($4.07), Nevada ($4.04), Alaska ($3.90), Illinois ($3.88), Michigan ($3.70), Washington, D.C. ($3.66), and Indiana ($3.65).

Another cost to consider is tolls. Not all states have them, but check your route on Toll Guru to see how much change you might need on hand or how much money to have loaded on the E-ZPass.

The weather factor

High temperatures and a few thunderstorms are in the forecast for much of the country, according to AccuWeather . Both can cause travel delays.

The worst heat is expected in California.

Wyatt Seymore pours the last drops of liquid from a water bottle into his mouth on June 17 as he takes a break from unloading a stiflingly hot trailer of fireworks outside Powder Monkey Fireworks ahead of the opening of the stand in Weldon Spring, Mo.

Heat wave safety tips from the world's first chief heat officer

"It's going to be downright hot across the Southwest, especially in California and the Desert Southwest where record highs will be challenged," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joseph Bauer told the website.

The Southern Plains and Southeast regions are also expected to feel the heat over the Independence Day weekend with higher than average temperatures.

High temperatures can slow down travel. When temperatures get too high, railway tracks can start to bend — forcing trains to slow down or stop completely. And planes may face weight restrictions during severe heat.

Traveling during the morning or evening can help offset the risk of heat-related delays.

While much of the country will face high temperatures on the Fourth of July, the Northern Plains, Midwest and portions of the Northeast may see thunderstorms, according to AccuWeather.

Flight delays and cancellations

As a rule, airlines are required to offer travelers a refund or book them another flight if they cancel a passenger's flight. The rules surrounding flight delays are more complicated.

Airlines are ordered to give full refunds instead of vouchers and to stop hiding fees

27 Holiday Travel Tips For A Stress-Free Season

If you’re traveling during the holidays, you’ll want to get there safely and stress free. Luckily, we have holiday travel tips to help!

27 Holiday Travel Tips For A Stress-Free Season

With extra vacation days and the tradition of returning home—or at least heading to wherever your family’s home is now—the holidays are a popular time to travel. Of course, nearly everyone else thinks so, too, which means you’ll be faced with big crowds and higher prices. A little planning goes a long way in making this a trip to remember because of all the good times you had, not because of travel delays.

Lucky for you, we have tons of holiday tips and tricks for helping you get to your destination as quickly as possible and with all your gear—and sanity—still in your possession. From picking the best time to travel to navigating busy airports and being a friendly flier and a gracious guest, we’ve compiled the ultimate list of holiday travel tips for you.

So sit back, relax with some cocoa and holiday tunes, and read on!

Let’s Get Planning

  • Pick the right time to travel: Sure, everyone wants to be together on the holiday, but our holiday travel tips begin with asking your family if they’re willing to celebrate on off-peak days so you don’t fly or drive with the masses. It could save you hundreds of dollars in flights alone—not to mention cheaper hotels and activities—and you won’t have to brave the crowds who are all leaving the day before and returning the day after Christmas, the New Year, or whatever holiday you plan to observe.
  • Arrive early and leave late: If you have extra vacation days or the ability to work remotely, try to get to your destination a bit earlier. If you have kids, school breaks typically begin the day before, so one of our best holiday tips is to travel a few days before that if you can. And if you're traveling for Thanksgiving break in the United States, you can typically score cheaper travel on the Tuesday and Wednesday after the holiday. That's true for New Year’s Day around the world, too; waiting till Jan. 3 or 4 to return home will let you sail that vacation high a little longer for less cash.
  • Fly midweek or on the actual holiday: Of course, if Jan. 3 is a Friday, that may not necessarily be true. Our list of the best holiday travel tips includes avoiding weekend flights if you can, as many travelers will plan their trips this way to maximize their days off of work. If your family has agreed to celebrate on a different day, traveling on a holiday may mean you’ll have fewer crowds to fight, especially later in the day. So sleep in, have a nice holiday breakfast, and then hit the road!

Outdoor Research Helium Adrenaline Day Pack 20L In Use

  • This isn’t the time to be cheap: One of our top holiday travel tips is to pay attention to the airline you fly. You’ll want to choose an airline with traveler-friendly policies and great customer service that you can access quickly if your flight is delayed or canceled. That’s more likely to happen over the holiday season because (at least in the Northern Hemisphere) inclement weather may impact your flight, and higher travel demand may mean more overbooked flights.
  • Be kind, rewind: As the old adage goes, “You’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” Kindness is an essential part of every holiday tips list (and it’s, frankly, good advice whenever you travel). It’s even more important to keep in mind when interacting with employees who are likely already stressed from overwork and missing time with their families. If something happens to put a kink in your travel plans, take a step back and a deep breath, and then politely ask for help. There’s a good chance that whatever happened isn’t a direct result of something that a particular employee did, and it’s just their job to clean up someone else’s mess.
  • Accept that everything will take longer: Be prepared to spend more time at the airport over the holidays. Whether it’s a weather delay or simply too many travelers for too few workers to handle, our holiday tips include packing sudoku or crossword puzzles, a book, and loading games on your phone so you won’t be bored in line.

Boarding the plane

  • Resistance is futile: Bear in mind that everywhere you go will be more crowded, and everything will cost more. It’s the law of supply and demand, and it happens every year, so you’ll be a lot happier if you plan for it and embrace the craziness.
  • Choose your seat: Here’s a tip for traveling during the holidays that may cost more but is worth the extra money: pick your seat, even if you have to pay for the privilege. If you already have an assigned seat, you’re less likely to get booted from an overbooked flight.
  • Arrive early: As we said above, everything will take longer, from finding a parking spot to getting through security, so getting to the airport earlier than you think you should have to is one of the best holiday travel tips when you want your trip to be less stressful.

There’s No Present Like The Present

  • Stop and drop that wrap: If you’re flying during the holidays, don’t bust out the paper, tape, and bows at home. Never mind the fact that no beautiful bow will survive airplane turbulence; if airport security has to check your bag because something inside flags an alert, they may have to unwrap your gift to see what’s inside before you even get on the plane.

Santa Claus is coming to town

  • It’s in the bag: Instead of trying to fit a roll of wrap in your carry on luggage or dealing with the creases of folded gift paper, our holiday tips include bringing gift bags from home for your gifts when you arrive at your destination. Gift bags and tissue paper lie flat nicely in the bottom of your pack, still look beautiful, and take less time to use than setting up a wrapping station when you arrive.
  • Keep it personal: Try to pack any gifts in the travel daypack you're using as a personal item bag if they fit so you still have something to share at the gift exchange if your luggage gets lost. If they take up too much room, you can pack them in your carry on travel backpack, although overbooked holiday flights are more likely to run out of space in the overhead bin, so you may still have to check it at the gate if the flight is full.
  • Ship it directly: Of course, since you’re likely shopping for holiday gifts online, why not have them shipped right to your destination? Along with saving room in your backpack, they’ll be there when you arrive. You can request gift wrap to keep the surprise or bring those gift bags we mentioned above to quickly get the job done when you arrive.

Packing For Holiday Travel

  • Don’t check a bag: You know we’re all about one bag travel here at Pack Hacker, and the holidays are not the time to forget about our minimalist packing tips . If you check a bag and it gets lost or, more likely, delayed, you could be spending more time on the phone with customer service than you do visiting with Aunt Sally.

Packing a bag

  • Make a packing list: If you’re just throwing items willy-nilly into a bag, you’re nearly guaranteed to forget some travel essentials. So, one of our favorite holiday travel tips is to create a list of everything you need and stick to it! It’s easy with our online Packing List Tool . And, if you need help getting started, we have curated packing lists for nearly every type of trip.
  • You might not need that: Whether you’re staying with family, at an Airbnb, or in a hotel, find out what’s available for you to use before you start to pack. For example, you can bring less clothing if there’s a washer and dryer available, and your mom may still have your favorite brand of shampoo in the shower, but you may want to bring some instant java if grandma isn’t a coffee fiend like you are. Checking into what’s available will help you bring only the essentials, and it’s one of the best holiday tips we can share.

Car packed with duffle bags

  • Pack for different weather: Of course, if you count on your friends and relations for extra gear, you may end up wearing your dad’s XXL sweatshirt when the temperature dips, so it’s best to be prepared with layers in your travel capsule wardrobe . That’s even more important if you’re celebrating the holidays in a touristy destination—you may not want to buy a new pair of shorts with “South Beach” stamped on the butt because you forgot to bring your own.
  • Don’t forget to tip: The holiday tips continue with bringing along small bills for tipping. Showing your gratitude with some cash can go a long way in spreading goodwill to the hotel employees, cab drivers, and other servers you meet along the way if you’re traveling someplace where tipping is customary, like most of the United States.

Holiday Grab Bag

  • The right way to weather stalk: No matter where you travel, the weather can be inconsistent this time of year, so be sure to check the forecast before you pack. Don’t look too early, though, since some warmer destinations, like Florida, have climates that can change on a dime and seemingly don't settle into consistency until the last minute. Our holiday travel tips include packing a few days beforehand so you know exactly what you’ll need and what you can leave behind.
  • Avoid popular holidays at your destination: When you’re looking to get some rest or searching for a new adventure, why not visit a country that’s not celebrating the same holiday that you are? It will potentially be cheaper and less crowded than places following the same calendar.
  • Check your ride: Sure, Uncle Norm swears he can pick you up from the airport, no problem. But he could flake out the minute the snow starts to fly, so one of the best holiday travel tips entails making sure you have a backup transportation plan.
  • Rent a car: While it costs more than relying on the generosity of friends and relations, you're probably better off renting a car or scoping out the ride-share options at your destination. Then, you can go out on a “grocery run” if you feel the need to escape the holiday chaos.
  • Be flexible: Something will go wrong. There you go, that’s one of the best holiday travel tips we can give you. Knowing there’s a good chance that not everything will go according to plan and being ready to roll with the punches is the secret to a more serene holiday.

  • Ask the experts: If you’re heading to somewhere you’ve never been, our holiday tips include asking for help before setting out. Maybe you have friends or family who can tell you what bag you should bring to the beach and what are the best gloves for texting on the ski slopes, but if not, Pack Hacker Pro is a community of fellow travelers who are always eager to help you get ready for your next trip, so join us!
  • Plan for the unexpected: Whether someone in your travel party gets sick or you need to unexpectedly come home early, holiday travel insurance offers peace of mind that you won’t lose all of your money if you can’t make it on your trip.
  • Say thanks with a gift: We don’t think that adage about houseguests and fish actually holds water, but the fact is that having people stay overnight is hard work. So sending flowers or a fruit basket—or, better yet, bringing something unique from your hometown—to your hosts to show your appreciation is one of the best holiday tips to ensure you get invited back next year.
  • Decide whether the stress is worth it: Hopefully, now, you’re feeling better about traveling over the holidays, but if you’re not, you should decide if it’s right for you. It’s the most expensive time of the year to travel to many places, and while it can be a lot of fun to celebrate in a new location, you could also make your money go a lot further if you wait a few months to take off.

However, if you keep all of our holiday travel tips in mind, you’re more likely to be happy heading out to visit family or explore a new destination, even with the additional crowds. Who knows? You could meet your new best travel friend as long as you pack your patience and remember that you’re heading out on vacation—this will be fun!

How to save money for your next big trip

big holiday trip

For some people, budgeting is a way to get excited about a trip. They use it as the first step in the planning process and as a way to get themselves psyched up about a destination. For most of us, though, saving up for a trip is like going to the dentist after bingeing on sugar for a few months.

But budgeting is better than running out of money halfway through a trip and having to make an embarrassing call home to friends or parents. Now, with the pandemic still impacting travel, you might find you have time to start budgeting for a future trip. Here we answer some of the big questions around how to successfully save money and budget for your next dream holiday.

How much will I need?

Start your budget with the biggest expenses first—usually this will be your flights, but accommodation also adds up. In the Lonely Planet guidebooks , Guides app and destination pages of our website, there is often specific information on a country's average costs under the “practical information” section or "in detail" section on the website, which can be an invaluable reference point when estimating expenses—you don’t want to show up in Singapore having budgeted for a week in Malaysia ; you’ll starve.

With a rough idea of how long you'll be away, you can work out a daily cost based on room rates and meal costs. Add in a little more for activities , museum entry fees, a couple of souvenir T-shirts you’ll probably never wear when you’re home and last-minute taxi fares to the airport when you’ve slept through your alarm.

Allow for an occasional splurge. Add a little fat for a cocktail or two at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace or skydiving in New Zealand . The worst budget is a chain at your leg pulling you away from the best (if slightly more expensive) travel experiences. Sure, it can be cheaper to self-cater your way around Europe, but if you’re missing out on tasting pizza in its birthplace or discovering the delights of vegan weed burgers in Amsterdam then you won't enjoy the trip.

A hiker in full gear stands with a flock of sheep on a mountain with a view of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps

What should I buy before I leave?

Add in pre-trip costs including visas, reliable travel insurance and immunizations. Some travelers skimp on travel insurance, but if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. Especially in today's times when travel restrictions can change daily. Even if nothing goes wrong, it pays for itself in peace of mind and when something does go wrong (lost luggage or cancelled flights) you'll find it invaluable.

Gear is another sizable pre-departure purchase. Travelers, especially first-timers, often over-invest in specialized travel gear, but prioritizing is the key to saving money while still making a success of life on the road. A strong, comfortable backpack is the traveler's linchpin, and it’s worth shelling out for a good-quality model (a good bag should last a few tours). An equally important investment is a pair of decent shoes—chances are you’ll be spending a lot of time on your feet, so making sure your footwear is comfortable, durable and is suited to your needs is essential.

Other gear to think about includes clothing, which should be suited to your environment , power adapters, and a good ol’ Swiss Army knife (in a checked bag of course), but traveling as light as possible is always a good mantra.

How do I save money for a trip?

Once you've worked out how much you need, you've then got a figure you can save towards. Some people make this number their screensaver or put it on their fridge, using this saving goal as motivation to go to work every day.

Have your very own telethon-style countdown as you save towards the goal. If you find saving tough, try budgeting software like Pear Budget or Mint— the latter includes countdown functions for your savings and can suggest ways to cut your expenses. If you don't hit your saving goal, then it might be time to go back and re-visit the budget—those fancy cocktails might have to be traded in for a bottle of soju and microwave ramen in a Korean convenience store , which, let’s be honest, is probably just as good!

A woman snorkels through beautiful clear waters.

With this in mind, being realistic is also an important part of the money-saving process. Can you truly afford that swim-up luxury apartment in the Maldives , or would you be equally content in a rustic beachfront bungalow in the Philippines for a fraction of the cost? If you’re struggling to reach your finance goals, being flexible with your trip itinerary can help get you on that flight a lot faster.

How can I keep cash safe when I’m traveling?

Before you go, someone is bound to force one of those ugly, flesh-toned money pouches on you because it 'saved their life' back when they did their gap year. Not that there's anything wrong with money belts or pouches, but you could probably do just as well by having your valuables in an inside pocket of a zipped-up jacket.

Carrying your money in a few forms and in a few different places is always good idea. Diversify your money so you hold a little cash, a credit card and an ATM card. Although there are good ATM locators for Visa, Mastercard and other major credit card providers, you'll find that they can break down, run out of cash or otherwise fail just when you need to pay a taxi driver. Sometimes cash is still king. It’s a good idea to carry a “whip out”—a small amount of loose cash to pay for things as you're walking along. That way your wallet is conveniently stashed and potential pickpockets don't know where to hit you.

Of course following the basics will also go a long way—be mindful of your surroundings at night, don’t carry around massive wads of cash and use hostel lockers and hotel safes where possible. It’s astonishing how many penny-pinching backpackers leave wallets and purses splayed across communal dormitory beds before heading off for a long shower; that’s one potential way to blow those hard-earned savings in record timing.

Expert tips to save big on holiday travel now by booking this summer

big holiday trip

If you travel often, you've probably heard the rule of thumb, to book during the opposite season -- sort of like Christmas in July or buying a winter coat at a deep discount during summer.

Experts say the logic is the same for booking holiday flights or a winter getaway for less.

"Airfare for Christmas travel this year is already tracking as high as fares last year, more than 20% above pre-pandemic prices," Hayley Berg, the lead economist for travel booking platform Hopper, told "Good Morning America."

Berg suggested that holiday travelers begin "planning ahead and tracking prices so you book at the right time" in order to get "the best deals this upcoming holiday season."

Save money by booking holiday flights in July, August

"The best time to book your winter holiday flights is not waiting until October, November when most people book those holiday flights, it's booking it in the summer," travel expert Scott Keyes told "GMA." "When you are on summer vacation and everybody else is thinking about summer travel, that's the best time to be trying to book your winter holiday flights."

The going.com founder, formerly of Scott's Cheap Flights, added that "it's not that every single flight for Christmas and New Year's is going to be cheap right now, but the odds are at their best -- you're most likely to see a good deal pop up in July or August."

Berg agreed, adding that travelers should "use this time to solidify your holiday plans and start tracking prices for holiday trips" as those "will be volatile for the next two to three months."

PHOTO: Stock photo of a traveler in an airport.

Keyes also said that post-pandemic, many "airlines have largely gotten rid of change fees and cancellation fees, so that you can make your plans in pencil."

"It's easier to kind of book that $350 flight to Los Angeles today over Christmas to visit your family, knowing that if your plans change, you can now cancel that ticket and have $350 in travel credit with the airline," he said. "Or, you can change your dates, push it back and not lose the value of the tickets."

Overall, Keyes said, "I encourage folks to start looking now, well before they're thinking about the flight."

More expert travel tips to find holiday and winter travel deals

Keyes, who has spent the better part of a decade doling out travel and airfare savings professionally with the world, shared a few additional recommendations for folks looking to save money on travel later this year and early next year.

The cheapest time of year to fly

"January and February are the two cheapest months for flights of the entire year," he said. "You see this massive, massive price drop happening around the first week of January, where flights go from one of the most expensive times of the year -- Christmas and New Year -- to one of the cheapest times around Jan. 7."

Be flexible for the best value

"If you have the flexibility to be able to travel in January or February, I would highly recommend that as a good value time to go," he said.

Pick cheaper travel days

Berg said that "sitting down with the calendar in July and planning ahead to travel on the cheapest days can be the difference between breaking your budget and saving hundreds."

"Historically, travelers have saved as much as $300 per ticket by flying on the cheapest days surrounding Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you're traveling for Thanksgiving, try flying Monday of Thanksgiving week and returning any week day of the following week to save the most," she added. "With Christmas Day on a Monday this year, Thursday and Friday will be the most expensive travel days. Travelers who are flexible should plan to depart mid-week before the holiday or on Christmas Eve to get the lowest airfare."

Plan ahead for disruption

Last year, Hopper data saw flight cancellations and delays during the holiday season, so Berg suggested people "plan ahead by adding in a buffer day, selecting nonstop flights and booking the first flight of the delay to avoid disruptions."

Best affordable winter travel destinations

PHOTO: Stock photo of palm trees decorated for Christmas.

"One is Hawaii in January, February, even March because the weather is consistent -- when the weather's pretty miserable in much of the northern half of the U.S., it's beautiful, sunny and wonderful and warm out in Hawaii -- and it's cheap," Keyes said. "Flights out to Hawaii in January and February can be found for as little as $200 bucks round trip from the West Coast and sometimes as little as $400 or $450 for the rest of the U.S."

Similarly, he said the Caribbean is a great budget-friendly winter getaway.

"If you can go just after the Christmas/New Year break, you're gonna see really cheap flights down to Puerto Rico, around $200 bucks round trip," he said. "To other islands, sometimes it's $300 round trip on full service airlines . These are great places to be able to enjoy the sunshine at a time when there's very little of that [elsewhere] in the U.S."

Finally, Keyes expects to see a trend of "significantly cheaper prices" for flights to Europe in winter 2024.

"Especially southern Europe -- Spain, Portugal, places like that where it's still quite warm -- the sort of really inflated summer prices that we're seeing to Europe over summer I think are set to end," he said. "I think we're likely to see significantly cheaper prices to Europe into the fall and winter for a number of reasons."

The reason for this? Among other things, Keyes said "the U.S. economy is in much better shape than Europe," airlines have been "adding more capacity," and there are "fewer travelers in the winter compared to the summer."

"I think there's a very strong likelihood we're going to see more of those $350-$400 round-trip flights to Europe for January, February and March," he said.

Travel rules to keep in mind when booking early

"Part of the difficulty of airfare is that it's the most volatile thing we purchase," Keyes said. "At end of the day, getting a deal you are happy with yourself is the most important thing -- that counts as a win."

One of his top suggestions is to set a calendar reminder once a week at the same time to look at your flight and search for a cheaper fare. In addition to his own deals and newsletters, Keyes suggests checking other price trackers and Google Flights to set specific alerts for any changes.

"What's especially nice nowadays is that as long as it's not basic economy, you can monitor that same flight from the day you booked until the day you actually take the trip -- and if the price drops, you can always rebook it at that cheaper price and pocket any difference. That kind of gives you an ability to be able to book today and lock it in."

Another suggestion from Keyes is to understand and use points while you have them.

"Generally speaking, the best approach to points is to not necessarily amass a huge amount and then just wait for that dream trip, but rather do what's called 'earn and burn.'"

He said the benefit of this approach "is that points are a currency of the airlines, and airlines are well within their right to just change how much your points are worth anytime."

"That can happen without notice," Keyes said. "It's what's called an overnight devaluation, and you're always kind of at risk of that with points."

"The rule of thumb to know if you're getting a good value to use your points is if you're getting at least two cents per point," he added.

6 Beaches to Love This July 4 (and All Summer Long)

From Hawaii to Rhode Island, here are some of our favorite shores on which to enjoy some hard-earned R & R this Independence Day holiday.

People frolic on a coastline whose shore grows with wild grasses. The sky and the water are a tranquil blue.

By The New York Times

Perhaps you already have a favorite beach — one where already you know how to nab a free parking space, where the best shady spot is and when the soft-serve truck makes its rounds.

If you’re looking to mix it up this July 4, or throughout the summer, here are six beach destinations around the United States to inspire a new adventure.

Keep in mind that AAA projects that this Independence Day holiday period will be a record breaker . Nearly 71 million people are expected to travel 50 or more miles from home between June 29 and July 7, including more than 60 million on the roads — so be safe and leave plenty of time for the drive.

Which U.S. beach do you think is unbeatable? Let us know in the comments (or protect your secret — we get it).

Discover a refreshing gem in Rhode Island

The next time you’re sitting in traffic, inching toward the Hamptons, Cape Cod or another congested beach hot spot, consider the virtues of South County, R.I. (known officially as Washington County). This gem of the Ocean State, with 100 miles of coastline, is two and a half hours from Manhattan and one and a half hours from Boston, and it requires no planes or ferries. Between the coastal communities of Watch Hill and Charlestown, 14 public beaches beckon.

Sprint down an epic dune to sparkling Lake Michigan

Racing down the Dune Climb, a 300-foot sand dune, is one of the most popular activities in a corner of northwest Michigan called Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Kids gallop and roll down, their squeals as high-pitched as the cries of the herring gulls overhead. At the bottom you’re sweaty and breathless — but awaiting you is shimmering, sapphire-blue Lake Michigan, endless as an ocean. Just be ready for the oxygen-sucking, slipping-and-sliding clamber back uphill.

Stroll and splash along a serene beach path on Maui

The Wailea Beach Path, which meanders along Maui’s southern coast, reflects the island’s almost contradictory personas: On one side of the path, opulent resorts flaunt swim-up bars and nightly torch-lighting ceremonies. A subtler drama unfolds on the opposite side, where native flora like honey-scented naio bushes, spiky hala trees and hibiscus blossoms flourish along the rocky shoreline. Cool off along the way with dips in the waves.

Take a loop to hidden Oregon beaches

West Coast road trippers who stick to U.S. 101, the main north-south coastal highway, miss out on something spectacular. The Three Capes Scenic Loop winds 40 miles along windswept cliffs, through towering forests of centuries-old Sitka spruce and past charming beaches, including those along Netarts Bay, home to a string of oyster farms.

Seek your “perfect beach” on Puerto Rico’s northern coast

Ever visited a beach so impossibly sublime, you fear it may not live up your fond memory of it? For the writer Mya Guarnieri, that superb stretch of golden sand was Punta Caracoles Beach (as it is listed on some maps) in Puerto Rico, about an hour’s drive west of San Juan. Her journey to rediscover it took her to several others on the island’s northern coast — including La Poza del Obispo, whose natural rock formation creates a crystal clear pool that is perfect for floating — that could become your perfect beach, too.

Pick your paradise along Florida’s 30A

The coast along State Road 30A — a 24-mile stretch of the Florida Panhandle — is famous for its soft “sugar sand,” pulverized quartz crystal washed downstream from Appalachia thousands of years ago. Dig your toes in at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, which offers three miles of undeveloped coast. Look for the sail-shaped dune rising 25 feet that gave the park its name. (Before swimming at beaches along 30A, visitors should check the beach for warning flags that may indicate dangerous conditions.)

Best & Worst Days to Fly & Travel for the Holidays – Christmas & New Year’s 2024

Best Worst Days to Fly for Holiday Travel

As seen in our 2023 Christmas Travel Survey , 50.44% of American adults plan to travel to a vacation destination or holiday gathering for Christmas this year.

There are a limited number of flights available for Christmas and New Year’s, so it is important to book as early as possible for the best prices (ideally you have already booked your holiday travel). Additionally, some days are much better than others to fly when it comes to crowds and cost. This guide will detail how far in advance to book holiday travel as well as the best and worst days to fly.

Table of Contents

How Far in Advance to Book Holiday Travel

Ideally, you should book your Thanksgiving and Christmas flights many months in advance. As a rule, we suggest booking domestic flights at least one to three months in advance. For international flights, you should book at least two to eight months in advance, but the earlier the better. For the holidays, you should book even earlier if possible to guarantee a desirable route, time, seat, and price.

With Thanksgiving over, here are our recommended cutoff dates for booking Christmas flights for the 2023 holiday season.

Christmas (book before Thanksgiving)

The best deals on Christmas flights are usually available through late August and early September . If possible, book even earlier in June or July. At the latest, you should book by Thanksgiving, but the earlier the better. If it is December and you still do not have a flight, you should expect to pay a premium. Additionally, you will likely only have undesirable flight times to choose from with the potential for one or more connections. Here is a ranking of our recommended booking times.

  • June, July, and August  – Best combination of inventory and cheap prices
  • Early through Middle September  – Still a great time
  • Early October  – Google’s recommendation. Cheap prices but lower inventory
  • Thanksgiving  – Book Christmas flights by Thanksgiving at the latest
  • December  – High prices and poor flights (connections, middle seats, bad times, etc.)

Further Reading: When to Book Christmas Flights – Best & Worst Times

Thanksgiving (book before Halloween)

I recommend booking your Thanksgiving flight by late August or early September for the best price. If possible, book in June or July. Book international flights even earlier. If you wait too long, you should aim to book by Halloween at the latest. While it is possible to get a decent deal after Halloween, your chances dramatically decrease. Your odds of finding a desirable flight time also go down when booking after Halloween. Here is a ranking of our recommended times.

  • Early October  – Deals are still available but desirable flights may be limited
  • Halloween  – Book Thanksgiving flights by Halloween at the latest
  • November  – High prices and poor flights (connections, middle seats, bad times, etc.)

Best & Worst Days to Fly for the Holidays

Being on a Thursday every year, the best and worst days to fly for Thanksgiving are predictable. Christmas is a little more difficult since it does not fall on the same day of the week every year. Here are the days you should target and the days you should avoid this holiday season. To come up with our best and worst dates forecast, we sampled hundreds of flight prices around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our sample included numerous departure and arrival cities around the United States.

Christmas (best departure and return dates)

Our 2023 Christmas Travel Survey shows 50.44% of American adults plan to travel to a vacation destination or gathering. Since Christmas falls on a different day every year, the best days to fly change. Other things such as school and business closures affect the dates too. Christmas can fall on a weekend (as it did in 2022), which further complicates things. Generally, the worst day to fly for Christmas is December 23, but that is not a hard rule.

Best Christmas Travel Dates for 2023

The earlier you depart the week before Christmas the better. Americans will look to get a few days of work in before flying out. If possible, fly on Monday, December 18, or Tuesday, December 19. Sunday, December 17 is even better if you can swing it. Flying on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day is ideal for cheaper prices and fewer crowds too, but you may not want to travel on a holiday.

Christmas falls on a Monday this year, so many people will fly home the day after. Tuesday, December 26 and Wednesday, December 27 will be popular travel days, so try and wait until Thursday or Friday.

Worst Christmas Travel Dates for 2023

The three days before Christmas Eve, the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, are going to be busy travel days. I recommend avoiding them and departing earlier in the week if you can.

Avoid the Tuesday and Wednesday after Christmas for your return flight. Despite being the day after Christmas, many people will fly home on Tuesday or Wednesday so they can return to work for a few days before the weekend.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Travel Tips

We recommend flying out for New Year’s on Thursday, December 28 or Friday, December 29. Fly home on Wednesday January 3 or Thursday January 4. While it is not ideal, flying out on the night of New Year’s Eve or the morning of New Year’s Day is generally cheap. Unfortunately, you will probably miss New Year’s Eve activities if you opt for an evening flight. An early New Year’s Day flight is not optimal either unless you can go bed very early on New Year’s Eve.

Avoid flying out on Saturday, December 30 and the morning of December 31.

Thanksgiving (best departure and return dates)

Our 2023 Thanksgiving Travel Survey shows more than 45.21% of American adults intend to travel to a vacation destination or holiday gathering last year. That means tens of millions of people will fight over seats for a very limited number of flights.

Best Thanksgiving Travel Dates for 2023

As the table shows, you want to depart early during the week. If possible, Sunday is even better than Monday. While not ideal, Thanksgiving Day is a great day to fly . Black Friday is also a good day to fly if you can swing a shorter trip.

Most people return home the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so aim to fly back on the Friday or Monday after Turkey Day. If you can wait another day, Tuesday is even better than Monday.

Worst Thanksgiving Travel Dates for 2023

Avoid the Wednesday before Thanksgiving at all costs. It is one of the most popular days of the year to fly, and it is expensive. Additionally, airports are always packed, so it is an extra stressful experience.

Avoid the Sunday after Thanksgiving for your return flight. Most people fly that day to get home before the workweek. I recommend flying home on Friday or Monday or Tuesday.

Expert tips to save big on holiday travel now by booking this summer

Booking during the opposite season is a great way to save.

Experts share best times to book, airport hacks and more holiday travel insights

Travel rules to keep in mind when booking early.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July holiday, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the Second Continental Congress’ unanimous adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, a document announcing the colonies’ separation from Great Britain.

One year later, according to the Library of Congress , a spontaneous celebration in Philadelphia marked the anniversary of American independence.

But observations weren’t commonplace until after the War of 1812, when they quickly took off. Congress was late to the party, finally passing a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

Here’s what is open and closed this year on the Fourth of July:

Government Buildings

Government offices, post offices, courts and schools are closed.

Banks and the stock market

U.S. stock markets and banks are closed Thursday.

Most FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery services will also not be available on Independence Day.

Warehouse membership club Costco said it would be closed on July 4th , but the vast majority of major national retailers will be open, with some offering promotional sales to lure customers. Hours may vary by location, so check your local store.

Image

With the Fourth of July holiday falling on a Thursday, many Americans plan to take Friday off too, enabling them to travel for a long weekend.

Auto club AAA projects that 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the holiday week from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. The projected number of travelers for that period is 5% more than last year and 8% more than in 2019.

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car during the holiday week, 2.8 million more travelers than last year. AAA is forecasting that a record 5.74 million people will fly to their July Fourth destinations, an increase of nearly 7% over last year and a 12% jump over 2019.

Travel is the best gift — here are 20 birthday trip ideas to help you celebrate.

big holiday trip

Happy birthday to you! When it comes to celebrating another trip around the sun, the only thing better than presents and cake is traveling (but don't let anyone stop you from having all three). Read on for the best birthday trip ideas from sea to shining sea — and beyond.

1. Tulum, Mexico

Gather a group of friends and enter a new year of life with a clear mind after spending your birthday in the spiritual center of Tulum . Located along Mexico's gorgeous Riviera Maya, the Caribbean coastline, replete with crystal clear waters and white sand beaches, means you'll welcome another year on Earth in one of its most beautiful locales. Known for its yoga retreats, jungle cenotes, sacred ceremonies, and Mayan ruins, Tulum is the perfect place to center your mind and reconnect with nature. The city also has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shopping to keep you busy when you want to leave the peace of the jungles and beaches behind.

2. New York, New York

You can't beat the energy of New York City for marking a major milestone, especially growing older. Plus, the city that never sleeps is guaranteed to keep you young because there's always something new to see and do. No matter how you hope to celebrate, New York City has it — from live entertainment and gorgeous green spaces to Instagram-famous foodie finds. Every season has something different to offer, so the Big Apple makes for a festive birthday trip idea no matter your birthday month.

Book a room at the Renaissance New York Times Square Hotel for a stay in the heart of all the action, where you can fall asleep among the glow of neon lights — and enjoy a birthday fit for a movie scene.

3. Laguna Beach, California

For a truly pampered birthday trip idea, head to Laguna Beach , where you'll find the ultimate Southern California escape, complete with sunshine, surf, shopping, and spa treatments. A quirky yet chic beach town about an hour south of Los Angeles , Laguna is home to surf shops, art galleries, and eateries featuring everything from to-go tacos to fine dining — it truly has something for everyone.

There's no better place to stay than the oceanfront Montage Laguna Beach , where your party can share a private villa or book spacious adjoining suites, enjoy views for miles from the stunning Mosaic Pool , take a scenic stroll along immaculately manicured paths, or hit one of the area's most beautiful stretches of white-sand beach. Enjoy luxurious treatments at Spa Montage , from massages using California wildflowers to romantic couples' experiences.

4. Maui, Hawaii

If Hawaii has long been on your "someday" list, let your birthday provide the excuse you've been waiting for to finally book that flight and just go for it. Regardless of your age, Hawaii has lots to do, great places to eat, and cultural experiences to enrich your global education, while the greens and blues of Maui's tropical landscape offer a feast for the eyes. Try something new on your visit, whether that's learning to surf or sampling a spoonful of purple poi. To really celebrate your birthday with a bang, make sure a traditional hula performance is on the itinerary.

5. Train Journey Through Italy

Michele Rossetti / Getty Images

If you know of a better way to celebrate a birthday than all the pizza, pasta, gelato, and wine your heart desires, then please alert the presses. Otherwise, head straight to Italy for a travel birthday bonanza — there are few better ways to explore the dreamscape that is Italia than to see as much of the boot as you can by train. Include highlights like Florence , the Cinque Terre , and Tuscany (Italy's heavenly wine region) for the kind of trip that might make you pick up scrapbooking again.

6. Charlotte, North Carolina

If melt-in-your-mouth BBQ and outdoor adventures are right up your alley, look no further than Charlotte for the ideal birthday trip destination. Home to the U.S. National Whitewater Center — where you can find whitewater rafting, biking, zip lines, live music, and craft brews all in one action-packed location — and the fragrant pits of drool-worthy Noble Smoke , Charlotte promises great eats and a great time.

Looking for more? Charlotte is also home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame , the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art , and the NoDa Art District . If you're traveling with a group, head to Optimist Hall , where everyone can enjoy a meal of their choosing from local food vendors.

7. Santa Fe, New Mexico

If all you want to do on your birthday is relax and unwind, plan an indulgent spa retreat to the American Southwest and put Santa Fe at the top of your list. At the Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort , you'll find spring-fed waters and the opportunity to soak in blissful thermal pools following a top-notch spa treatment; healthy, nourishing farm-to-table meals are also included with your stay. It's the perfect getaway, especially for a solo birthday trip or a quiet retreat with a loved one.

8. Mykonos, Greece

If you really want to fete your birthday in style, there's no better place to do so than the party destination of Mykonos. Located in Greece's Cyclades islands, Mykonos captures the picturesque beaches and white churches most people associate with a Greek Island vacation . But, what makes this place most appealing for birthday trips, especially for groups of friends, is its famous beach parties and thriving nightlife scene, allowing travelers to celebrate from sun-up to sun-down. Check in to The Wild Hotel by Interni for exclusive private access to the beautiful Kalafatis Beach , located below the hotel's cliffs.

9. Vail, Colorado

If you enjoy being active, Vail should top your birthday trip ideas list. You can snowboard and ski in the winter on Vail's renowned slopes — and who doesn't want to indulge in the pleasures of après ski for their birthday? — or hike among blankets of wildflowers in the spring and summer. Book a birthday dinner in a woodsy lodge for the full experience.

10. Backpack Through Thailand

Fly the distance to Southeast Asia for an unforgettable adventure packed with amazing views, flavorful dishes, and a welcoming culture, both from local residents and the country's large community of international ex-pats. Thailand is a popular dream trip destination for many, so what better reason to plan a trip than for your birthday?

Whether you go solo, with a friend or partner, or with a group of friends, Thailand is sure to please — the reason for its popularity among travelers is immediately obvious upon touchdown. Plus, Americans can stretch their dollars further here than many other places in the world, making it a great place to splurge on an all-out birthday bash.

11. Las Vegas, Nevada

Elena Papadopolis / EyeEm / Getty Images

Las Vegas is a classic destination for celebrations of every kind, and birthdays are no exception. Whether you're in it to win big at the casinos or splurge on world-class shows, birthdays present a much-needed excuse to run wild in Sin City. For a little balance, consider adding on a road trip through Nevada's deserts , stopping to check out roadside art and Gold Rush ghost towns along the way.

12. Chicago, Illinois

James Andrews / Getty Images

With lots to do, see, and eat in Chicago — and sprawling views from spots like Skydeck Chicago at Willis Tower — it's a great place to ring in another year. Get out on the water or spend your days exploring museums and galleries, depending on what suits your fancy. And no worries if your birthday's in the winter: after ice skating along the Maggie Daley Park Ice Skating Ribbon, you can warm up with a piping-hot deep-dish pizza, a Chicago classic.

Swissotel Chicago provides well-situated digs located within walking distance of many attractions, including the shops of Magnificent Mile. Book a corner room for views of the Chicago River, Navy Pier, and Lake Michigan.

13. Toronto, Canada

Kristjan Veski/Travel + Leisure

Those looking to skip the long flights often associated with international travel should consider our neighbor to the north for their next birthday destination. Toronto 's thriving music, food, and entertainment landscape means visitors never lack fun things to do in Canada's largest city. Explore the culture of the 6ix by taking a street art crawl or spending the day at one of the city's various museums and galleries. If you're a spring or summer baby, turn another year older at a Toronto music or film festival. And, of course, there's plenty of fall foliage and winter fun to enjoy in the colder months, when you can spend your birthday at the Toronto Light Festival or do a nearby winter getaway .

14. River Cruise Through Europe on U by Uniworld

London, Paris, Rome — sure, these are great places to turn another year older in Europe, but they've been done before. Instead, visit a lesser-known side of the continent by boarding a U by Uniworld cruise and rolling down the Rhine or floating down the Danube. Not your Grandma's stuffy river cruise, this line provides a fresh take on a method of traveling that's totally under-appreciated by everyone under 60 — built especially for the young and young-at-heart.

Whether you sail between Amsterdam and Brussels or explore Eastern Europe on a cruise connecting Vienna and Prague, you'll never forget a birthday spent meandering Europe's scenic rivers on a luxurious cruise with locally-inspired food, fun-loving fellow passengers, and tons of activities, from biking or walking tours at the port to silent discos and stargazing onboard.

15. Savannah, Georgia

Ivey Redding/Travel + Leisure

No place does southern charm quite like Savannah . Stroll along the cobblestone streets, shaded by canopies of live oaks aged hundreds of years, and pop into the many award-winning eateries, like The Grey , housed in a former Greyhound Bus station. By night, book a ghost tour for some serious spooks (there are a ton of companies to choose from), after you've treated yourself to a generous scoop of Leopold's Ice Cream , of course. The Plant Riverside District is another main attraction, packed with shops, galleries, entertainment, restaurants and bars, nightlife, and a hotel, the JW Marriott Savannah — all housed within a repurposed power plant, now a one-stop-shop for merrymaking.

16. Napa Valley, California

(Almost) any age can appreciate a cultured jaunt through wine country, which explains why it's a long-popular birthday destination. Between the picturesque landscapes, enchanting towns, award-winning restaurants, and world-class wine, Napa Valley is an easy choice for a birthday to remember — and a real crowd-pleaser of a birthday trip idea if you're hoping to convince a group to join you.

17. Machu Picchu, Peru

More adventurous travelers might consider spending a birthday visiting Machu Picchu . Hike, bike, raft, or zip line to the ancient Incan city on one of the various local tours that take thousands of people to Machu Picchu each year. If you're a more low-key traveler but still want the experience without doing the whole three-day Inca Trail hike, take a scenic train ride from Cusco instead. Once you're acclimated, see why the famous Incan citadel, high in the Andes Mountains, is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Breathtaking views and complex stone architecture make this ancient astronomical observatory a must-see.

Before and after traveling to Machu Picchu, you'll most likely stay in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes, which offers plenty of lodging, eateries, shopping, its namesake thermal springs (which feel especially good after a long hike), and the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary. You can also check out Cusco (Cuzco), a charming city full of hotels, restaurants, and UNESCO World Heritage architecture.

18. The Palm Beaches, Florida

The Sunshine State promises a laid-back, fun-filled visit any time of year. While there are great places to visit in Florida from the Keys to the Panhandle, the Palm Beaches are Florida's crown jewel. Packed with art and culture , outdoor activities, world-class shopping, picturesque beaches, and every sort of entertainment, the area has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a chill escape in Lake Worth Beach , buzzing nightlife in Delray Beach , or a glamorous vacation spent rubbing elbows with the rich and famous in Palm Beach .

Want to really up the ante? Miami is just a one-hour ride away on the luxurious Brightline train. Head even further south by car and you'll hit the Florida Keys , where anything goes — especially on birthdays.

19. Alexandria, Virginia

Getty Images / Lonely Planet Images

To enjoy your birthday to the fullest, head to underrated and affordable Old Town Alexandria , where you'll find both fascinating history and mouthwatering eats, as well as a happy marriage of Southern hospitality and mid-Atlantic sophistication. Stay at the Hotel Indigo Old Town Alexandria , located mere steps from easily walkable King Street, Old Town's main drag, complete with a clean, nautical vibe.

The city is charming, artsy, and packed with irresistible boutiques to shop in; best of all, Washington, D.C. , is just a 25-minute ride away on the Metro (and it'll only set you back about $5) — or you can simply enjoy the view of our nation's capital from across the Potomac River.

20. Reykjavík, Iceland

If unrivaled sights and some of the best hot springs in the world are on your birthday trip ideas list, you can't go wrong with Iceland's capital. Go for the city's famous lagoons and swimming pools , stay for Reykjavík's museums, galleries, theaters, and cafés. Enjoy local game at one of the nearby restaurants or go whale watching and sightseeing in Iceland's natural wonder. For the full experience, try horseback riding, glacier climbing, river rafting, and caving, among other popular activities.

In fact, 71 million Americans are hitting the road, taking to the skies and traversing waterways, according to data from the American Automobile Association ( AAA ). Travel is now well above pre-pandemic levels. For Independence Day this year, 5.7 million more Americans are traveling more than they did in 2019 before Covid-19, said AAA.

Also, air travel was on track to set a new record over Independence Day, with 5.74 million people flying to their holiday destination. Many more Americans embarked on road trips, with 60 million people expected to travel by car over the holiday, up 5% from 2023. At the same time, cruise lines report record numbers of passengers and claim their ships are booked well into next year. All the activity makes now the perfect time to own stocks of travel companies.

Let’s soar with three best travel stocks to buy in July 2024.

Viking Holdings (VIK)

Swiss cruise operator Viking Holdings (NYSE: VIK ) went public in the U.S. in May of this year. Already, its stock is up 30%. The strong performance makes Viking Holdings one of the most successful initial public offerings ( IPO ) of the year. Analysts expect VIK stock’s stellar performance to continue given the company’s profitability, wealthy clientele and long-term growth potential.

Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, Viking Holdings today generates $3 billion in annual revenues and employs more than 10,000 people. The company primarily runs cruise ships along European rivers and caters to older travelers. It does not allow people under 18 on its ships. More about the company will be known when it issues its next financial results in late August. But this new travel stock certainly looks promising.

Airbnb (ABNB)

Airbnb (NASDAQ: ABNB ) remains a top travel stock, especially with summer holidays in full-swing. The homestay and short-term rental company’s share price has gained 14% so far this year as it recovers from the ravages of the pandemic and grows both its sales and profits.

For this year’s first quarter, Airbnb posted EPS of 41 cents, which was well ahead of a consensus estimate of 24 cents. The quarterly profit was up 126% from a year ago and the company’s best first quarter ever.

Revenue in Q1 totaled $2.14 billion, ahead of Wall Street forecasts of $2.06 billion. Sales were up 18% from a year earlier. Gross bookings in the quarter were up 12% year-over-year ( YOY ), while nights and experiences booked rose 10%. Airbnb’s free cash flow at the end of the quarter totaled $1.90 billion, up 21% from the same period in 2023.

By all accounts, it was a blowout quarter and showed the company is benefitting from the resumption of travel, both in the U.S. and overseas.

American Airlines (AAL)

Now for a dip buying opportunity. Shares of American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL ), the world’s largest carrier, are down nearly 40% over the last 12 months and trading near a 52-week low. This presents an opportunity for investors, particularly ones with a long time horizon. AAL stock is down after the airline lowered its sales and profit guidance as it grapples with a slump in business travel.

Also, American Airlines recently announced that its Chief Commercial Officer ( CEO ) Vasu Raja was leaving the company at the end of June. News of the lowered guidance and executive departure has sent AAL stock spiraling lower. The problem is a decline of corporate customers and business travel, something American Airlines has struggled to reignite since the end of the pandemic.

The good news is that management has a plan. CEO Robert Isom has said that American Airlines plans to modify its ticket distribution strategy to drive bookings to its own platforms instead of third-party channels. That strategy could help the company and its stock recover. Investors who take a position in AAL stock now might be patting themselves on the back down the road.
