Guided Tour of the Uffizi Gallery

With over 1,5 million of visitors every year, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence is the most visited museum in Italy after the Vatican Museums in Rome. Therefore, it is rare to be able to enter the museum without waiting a long while in line. Of the Uffizi's large collection of artwork, about 2,200 works are on permanent display while the rest, due to lack of exhibition space, is kept in storage but shown on temporary, revolving exhibits throughout the year.

If you intend to visit the Uffizi in depth, you may need a few days. Spending more than 3 hours inside the museum you will get overwhelmed by all the beauty and history portrayed in each work. If you have only a few days to spend in Florence, you will also likely not have the time for a long visit.

We therefore recommend, first, to skip the line by booking ahead of time your online tickets for the Uffizi Museum . Once inside, you could rent an audio guide to help you understand what you're seeing, but even better yet is a visit of the Uffizi in the company of a guide. An Uffizi guided tour in a very small group gives you the chance to hear from an expert in art history about the masterpieces, the importance of the work, the artist and its historical context.

Book your tour

A guided tour is the best way to get the most out of your museum visit, especially in the case of such a big, beautiful museum as the Uffizi Gallery. The knowledgeable guide helps make your museum visit a pleasure by guiding you through the works of art, explaining the collection, its history and allowing you to see the beauty of it all. The guided visit of the Uffizi lasts about an hour and a half and the small groups makes it easy to enjoy the visit without feeling overwhelmed.

The guided Uffizi tour leads you through the most important masterpieces so you will be able to understand their beauty, importance, meaning and style. As part of the tour, you will also skip any line to get into the museum. The tour cost also includes the museum ticket for the main collection and any ongoing exhibit . At the end of the tour, you can choose to stay inside the museum and continue visiting any other rooms on on your own.

So if your time in Florence is limited and you want to get the most out of your visit to the Uffizi, we wholeheartedly recommend you consider a guided tour to Uffizi!

If you’re interested at all in learning about artwork and history, you have to sign up for this tour. As one of the most visited museums in the world, there are plenty of educated guides that work on-site.

However, this tour is known for having some of the most entertaining and knowledgeable, so be prepared to learn and see a lot! Even better, you don’t have to spend half your time waiting in massive lines that seem to never disappear – instead head through the priority entrance in both galleries!

Immerse yourself in the Italian Renaissance, where your guide will guide you through with expertise. You’ll see legendary masterpieces by some of the most famous Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo, Giotto, Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, and other notable figures.

You’ll not only see them though, as your guide will teach you about each piece and answer any questions you may have.

Michelangelo’s David is simply breathtaking, and makes it hard to believe that a human being is capable of creating something like this out of marble. Another highlight is the museum of musical instruments, even if you’re not particularly into music.

You’ll get time on your own as well, so you can explore at your leisure and see the pieces that interest you the most.

If you want to learn more about Italian history or culture but have a packed schedule, there’s no need to worry. The Uffizi Gallery Private Tour may last just an hour and 40 minutes, but you’re going to have a brain full of new information in that relatively short period of time.

This expansive gallery is simply magnificent, and with a local guide to teach you all about it, you’ll be a Renaissance pro, too.

Meet up with your guide at the Uffizi gallery at the time you agree upon beforehand. You may see a long line has already formed, but not to worry – you get to skip all that and head straight into the beautiful gallery!

As soon as you meet up, you’ll start learning the history of the building itself, as well as the state of Florence and beliefs that were popular during this important era.

Traveling and exploring new places should focus on the experience and learning, rather than standing in lines, right? I mean, who has time to spend hours queuing when there’s a whole world out there to see?

Maximize your time and see all the cool stuff with the Florence: Skip the Line Guided Uffizi Tour . If you’re bringing the entire family along, you have to check out this budget-friendly option.

The guides are so great at incorporating smaller children, ensuring they won’t get bored or want to run off to play with the statue of David.

We also really appreciated how well our guide accommodated the personal interests of the people in our group, and was easily able to answer every question asked.

Expect to see all of the main tourist pieces, as well as some other notable points of interest highlighted by fascinating anecdotes and historical stories. This definitely isn’t some run-of-the-mill audio tour – the personal touch is so valuable.

From the Late Gothic through the Renaissance and Mannerist periods, you’re going to see first-hand and learn about the most iconic art from these times.

It’s not just paintings either (though those are mind-blowing, too) – you’ll see sculptures, bas-relieves, altarpieces, drawings, and so much more. However, some of the most interesting stories are those of the building and area, itself and how important it was in local culture.

No matter your age or interests, though, you’re sure to fall in love with these “offices” of timeless treasures just as much as we have.

4. Uffizi Tour for Kids!

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Departure:  Plza della Signoria, 50122 Firenze FI
  • Departure Time: Check with tour operator
  • Includes:  Expert and official tour guide, Player notebook for children

When traveling with children, you may feel like you have to skip the museum or gallery visits to avoid them becoming bored. But that doesn’t mean that younger ones aren’t interested in the art or history – it’s all about how it’s presented to them.

With the Uffizi Tour for Kids! , the guides cut out all the fluff and make sure every turn is packed with curiosity and excitement!

One massively important aspect to having a smooth museum visit with kids is cutting down time standing in line for the entrance. They do you one better, by cutting out the line completely, letting you skip straight to the good part.

You also have quite a variety of different start times to choose from, so you can easily make it work with the rest of your schedule.  You’re not just going to “see” the museum – you’re going to go treasure hunting in the Uffizi Gallery!

That’s right – your certified art historian guide is going to the whole family on a wild ride filled with activities, questions, learning, and fun! No matter the age, these talented guides manage to keep everyone entertained with age-relevant engagement.

You’re not just going to be cutting out queuing, but you’re eliminating the boring parts of the tour, too. Kids receive a notebook to help them with their “masterpiece hunt”, which is admittedly been a blast for us all.

We love how patient and accommodating they are, too, making sure everyone is having a great time venturing around the labyrinth that is Uffizi!

5. Florence: Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour

  • Duration:  1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Departure: Piazzale degli Uffizi, 6, 50122 Firenze FI
  • Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Includes:  Skip the line tickets to the Uffizi Gallery, Licensed guide, Radios and headsets

Constructed in the 1500s and designed by Giorgio Vasari, the Uffizi is one of the most notable museums in the world. Many of the artifacts and art pieces inside are much older than that, however.

With the 1.5-hour Florence: Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour you’ll learn all about the history behind these masterpieces, the artists who made them, and the Renaissance that they helped make.

As is typical with Florence, in general, the Uffizi Gallery can be hard to know where to start. Your small group tour of no more than 14 people simplifies this, though, with a professional guide who knows this museum like the back of their hand.

Skip the line and head right into the fun, where you’ll be able to see pieces by Botticelli, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and many more.

The massive quantity of masterpieces in the gallery can be intimidating, but your guide will be sure to curate the tour just for you. You’ll of course see and learn all about the most notorious pieces, but will be shown those that suit your specific interests, as well.

Thanks to the smaller group size, you won’t just be another head in the crowd. To ensure you don’t miss a word in the more crowded corridors, you’ll get a headset to hear your guide, as well.

90 minutes turned out to be just the ideal length of time in a tour setting, as you get all the time you want after to continue exploring at your own pace. If you’re looking for an insider’s guide to Uffizi, this one is hard to beat.

Uffizi Tour Guide

It may currently hold some of the most famous works by Leonardo da Vinci, but did you know the Uffizi in Florence was housing masterpieces since the time of da Vinci?

This place was an art gallery even in the throes of the Italian Renaissance. Pretty crazy, right?

Commissioned by Cosimo l de’Medici, first Grand Duke of Tuscany, the Uffizi, or “offices”, were originally meant for just that purpose – to house the administrative and legal offices of Florence back in the 1560s.

Designed by Renaissance master, Giorgio Vasari, himself, the Uffizi is adorned with countless thoughtful details with an edifice featuring a Doric column portico that exudes both sophistication and opulence. The Gallery’s ceilings were adorned with “grotesque”, a-la-Emperor Nero motifs that draws similarities to his underground Domus Aurea.

The bold, dramatic effect in itself draws in visitors with a large, central arch. The interior wings are perfect for displaying ancient artwork and Medici family treasures. Today, it’s known as one of the most well-curated, complete museums of the Renaissance time period.

Most Important Works

While the “most important” title will vary depending on the person, there are some indisputably “most famous” works in the Uffizi you’ll likely want to check out.

‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli | 1485 – 1486

This is by far the gallery’s most famous work. If you’ve seen the Mona Lisa in person, you may perhaps feel it was much smaller than what you were imagining. You’re not likely to feel the same about this painting, which measures 10 feet across.

This symbol of love and beauty in both the spiritual and physical brings humanity closer to the divine. It represents purity, simplicity, and nobility of the soul. However, as Venus is portrayed nude in the painting, it was very controversial in the middle ages.

‘Coronation of the Virgin’ by Fra Angelico | 1432

It’s easy to say that this is one of the most impressive altar-pieces ever made, offering each saint their own special character. While you’re sure to be awestruck by the painting alone, the intricate engravings in the gilt elevates it to a whole new level.

‘Laocoön and his Sons’ by Baccio Bandinelli | 1525

No Italian Renaissance-era gallery is complete without sculptures. Based on a Hellenistic sculpture uncovered in 1506, this version became a modern recreation for Pope Leo X to gift King Francis I.

‘Madonna with the Long Neck’ by Parmigianino | 1535

And a long neck she does indeed have! The proportions are a bit bizarre, yet definitely draw attention. It’s meant to be radical, but somehow evokes a kind of grace that makes it one of the most famous pieces.

‘Portrait of Pope Leo X with Two Cardinals’ by Raphael | 1518

We’re back on the subject of Pope Leo X again, and this title basically says it all. This style was quite unique for its time, offering a very realistic insight into the figure’s life. With countless references to important events of that time, it’s one of those pieces that you can look at over and over and still spot new details.

‘Annunciation’ by Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Verrocchio

Who doesn’t know who da Vinci is? Just about everyone, right? Did you know that only a small percentage of people have actually seen one of his works in real life? The Annunciation offers fantastic insight into his earlier work, which was created alongside his master, Verrocchio.

Hours of Operation

The Uffizi is open Tuesday – Sunday from 8:15 am to 6:30 pm every day.

Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour in English: itinerary details

Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour in English

Our Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour in English starts with the east corridor on the second floor. The ancient sculptures arranged along the corridor depict the busts of the most famous Roman emperors, placed opposite the statues of their consorts. On the walls are exposed two series of paintings, those of smaller size form the so-called Giovo Series, and representing the illustrious characters of the past; the biggest ones make up the Aulica Series, in which the members of the Medici family are portrayed.

So we enter the first room of our Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour in English : the Sala delle Maestà . Here, there are three magnificent altarpieces. On the left stands the Rucellai Madonna painted in 1285 by Duccio di Buoninsegna, on the right Cimabue with the Santa Trinità Maestà built in 1280, in the centre the room the Madonna Enthroned (also known as Ognissanti Madonna) one of the most famous masterpieces of Giotto 1300s.

The visit continues in Room 3 where we can admire the A nnunciation by Simone Martini , one of the most important examples of Sienese Gothic painting, in which it is possible to perceive a hint of perspective in the pavement drawing.

Room number 7 opens us to the International Gothic; the most important work of this period is the Adoration of the Magi, by Gentile da Fabriano .

We continue our Uffizi Gallery Guided Tour in English and we enter the room dedicated to Filippo Lippi . This artist was certainly one of the most important of the XVth century. The work that most stands out for its beauty is undoubtedly T he Madonna with Child and Angels ; this painting, which hides a romantic story, was the most important also for the artistic life of another painter who was a pupil of Filippo Lippi: B otticelli .

We continue our visit by dwelling in the rooms where Botticelli 's works are exhibited: Primavera, the Birth of Venus, Pallas and the Centaur, the Calumny of Apelles, the Cestello Annunciation .

We now move to Room number 15, dedicated to the priceless masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci . From the Adoration of the Magi to the Baptism of Christ is tangible the immense creativity, skill and passion of a man who has left us incredible masterpieces and mysteries that perhaps we will never be able to solve. In his paintings, from the Adoration of the Magi to the Baptism of Christ, we experience the immense creativity, skill and passion of a man who has left us incredible masterpieces and mysteries that perhaps we will never be able to solve.

It is now time to look back into Room 35. Here is the only painting by Michelangelo present in Florence: the Doni Tondo . Probably painted for the Doni-Strozzi spouses, the scene represented by Buonarroti is full of novelties and will ensure this extraordinary artist a place among the inspirers of Mannerism.

Michelangelo painter at the Uffizi Gallery the Tondo Doni

Michelangelo at the uffizi gallery: the doni tondo.

Due to the acclaim that met the Pietà in Rome , Michelangelo upon returning to Florence was bombarded with commissions, among them, as has been seen, the crucially important one for the David . The other works from this most intense Florentine period are: another bronze David (now lost) for the French Marshal Pierre de Rohan; the twelve Apostles commissioned by the Wool Guild for the Florentine Cathedral, of which only a Saint Matthew was to be roughed out; the Madonna and the Child bought by the Mouscron family from Bruges for their chapel in the Notre-Dame Church in the Flemish city; the Pitti Tondo and the Taddei Tondo, so called from the names of their clients, as well as the very famous work that introduced Michelangelo as a painter, the Doni Tondo (now at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence); and lastly, the unfinished Battle of Cascina .

Tondo_Doni_Uffizi

The Holy Family of the Doni Tondo was painted for Agnolo Doni and his wife Maddalena Strozzi, perhaps on the occasion of their marriage, celebrated between 1503 and 1504 or, it has been suggested, some years later, between 1506 and 1507; in any case, some time around that 1506, when another great artist of the period, Raphael, painted splendid portraits of the married couple. The composition on a round support follow the most typical 15th century Florentine tradition, having been used, for example, in the Madonna of the Pomegranate by Sandro Botticelli and the Madonna of Humility by Luca Signorelli, from which Michelangelo obviously drew some inspiration.

In the Doni Tondo, however, Michelangelo’s bold experimentation is already accentuated. In the first place, the iconography of the group with the Madonna twisting to receive, over her shoulder, the Child handed her by Saint Joseph, is unsual. The virgin appearence too is atipycal. Maria has strong, robust features and is portrayed without a veil, dressed in classical style with bare arms, a physiognomy that seems to anticipate the Sibyls painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel . Then there are the colours: light and cold, harshly juxtaposed and iridiscent, a color scheme that is a prelude to the palette revealed by restoration of the Sistine, in sharp contrast with the taste of the period for pleasing, harmoniuos tones. Moreover, the young nudes in the background recall the “ Ignudi ” painted on the famous celeing of the Sistine.

Already in the Doni Tondo, as later in the masterpiece frescoed in the Vatican , Michelangelo’s work appears to painted sculpture, with the holy group in the Uffizi panel showing a strong three-dimensional effect, its plasticity underlined still further by the sharp contrast between light and shadow. As regards its meaning, the Florentine painting seems to allude to the division of humanity before and after the birth of Christ. If so, the nudes in the background are not classical figures of shepherds, as in the painting by Luca Signorelli, but probably represent the pagan world before Revelation.

Visiting the Uffizi Gallery: What We’ll Cover

The word “Uffizi” literally means “offices” in Italian. This historic structure housed the Medici family offices and, as renowned lovers and patrons of art, they adorned the space with a world-class collection.

Eventually, the space became so magnificent that people visited by request as early as the 16th century. In 1765, the last Medici heiress, Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, signed over almost all Medici assets to the Tuscan State in the  Patto di Famiglia .

Today, over four million visitors come to enjoy the masterpieces in the Uffizi each year. In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know about how to visit the Uffizi gallery, from getting tickets to guided tours, what to see while you’re there, and where to eat nearby. Here’s what we’ll cover:

How Long To Spend at the Uffizi Gallery Visit

Short Answer: 2 to 3 hours

The Uffizi Gallery has a wealth of famous artwork across multiple floors. You can see Raphael, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and many more all within a few feet of one another. That said, the Uffizi Gallery is not nearly as expansive as the Vatican Museums or the Louvre.

Two to three hours is a good amount of time to spend inside for anyone who appreciates artwork. Like any museum filled with significant and famous artwork, it should be visited with a local guide for the best experience.

How To Get To the Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi Gallery is extremely easy to find in Florence because all the roads lead to the general area of the gallery. So, you’ll happen upon it without even trying. It’s located near Piazza della Signoria, which is home to Palazzo Vecchio.

The back of the Uffizi is across from the Arno river, which is visible from inside the gallery. This is where the Vasari Corridors start, connecting the Uffizi to the Pitti Palace. It’s a lovely area to walk around and discover.

Address: Piazzale degli Uffizi, 6

What To See at the Uffizi Gallery

The Medici decorated their offices with stunning art and sculptures and the space has attracted visitors ever since. The gallery was opened publicly in 1765, but officially became a museum in 1865. Today, millions of visitors come to the Uffizi Gallery every year.

So, what is there to see at the Uffizi Gallery? When you visit, be sure to check out these famous artworks in the Uffizi Gallery. For more in-depth descriptions, check out our article on what to see at the Uffizi or, better yet, take a guided tour of the Uffizi .

The Uffizi Gallery doesn’t just contain art—it is art. It also has incredible views overlooking some of Florence’s greatest works of architectural art. Like many Italian cities, Florence could even be described as one large masterpiece as a whole.

There are numerous signs and indicators leading to the “bar” inside the Uffizi. Follow them for a coffee and an incredible viewpoint.

Portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Urbino by Piero della Francesca

uffizi gallery guided tour

This is an interesting and peculiar oil on wood painting depicting a very powerful couple, Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza. The Sforza family ruled Milan for hundreds of years.

The painting dates back to the late 15th century and is in fantastic condition. It is a two-sided painting, which is very rare, so make sure you take a look at the back. It features a horse-drawn carriage and a unicorn-drawn carriage that is intended to signify the allegories of triumph.

Location in the Uffizi: Hall 7

The Ognissanti Madonna by Giotto

uffizi gallery guided tour

Giotto was one of the most influential artists leading up to the golden era of the Renaissance. The Ognissanti or Madonna Enthroned was painted by Giotto di Bondone in the late Medieval period (proto-Renaissance) and is on a wood panel.

Although this is not their first appearance, Giotto is the first western-European artist to depict three-dimensional figures. What he did was considered highly innovative at the time and was a catalyst for artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo.

Location in the Uffizi: Hall 2, dedicated to Giotto and 13th/14th-century art

Medusa by Caravaggio

Oil painting of Medusa by Caravaggio in Uffizi, Florence

Caravaggio was sort of the Quentin Tarantino of the baroque period. He painted grotesque gripping artwork that turned heads. His Medusa is no exception.

It was commissioned by Cardinal Francesco Maria Bourbon de Monte in 1597 who then gave it to the Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici as a gift (or maybe a re-gift?).

Location in Uffizi:  Hall 90, dedicated to Caravaggio.

Venus of Urbino by Titian

uffizi gallery guided tour

The Venus of Urbino was completed by Titian in 1538 and commissioned by the Duke of Urbino, Guidobaldo II Della Rovere. The painting was a gift from the Duke to his young wife.

It represented the allegory of marriage: eroticism, fidelity, and motherhood. The eroticism is evident in the representation of Venus, the goddess of love. The dog at her feet represents marital fidelity. The girl looking through the chest in the background represents motherhood.

Location in Uffizi:  Hall 83

Self-Portraits by Rembrandt

Rembrandt was a very important figure as he carried the Italian Renaissance north and was a key figure in the Dutch Renaissance. He lived during the 17th century and has two self-portraits. First as a young man and another as a mature man.

He followed the path of Caravaggio, painting in a chiaroscuro method to draw attention to key dramatic features. You’ll find several Rembrandt paintings housed in the Uffizi including The Old Rabbi .

Location in the Uffizi: Hall of Rembrandt (49)

Doni Tondo (The Holy Family) by Michelangelo

uffizi gallery guided tour

Doni Tondo  or  The Holy Family is one of a literal handful of free-standing (panel) paintings Michaelangelo worked on and, apparently, the only panel that was completed.

It was commissioned by a merchant, Agnolo Doni, to commemorate the birth of his child. It’s a beautiful work of art that celebrates a sort of golden era for Renaissance art in Florence.

Location in Uffizi:  Hall 3

Medici Venus attributed to Praxiteles

Venus or Aphrodite is a highly sculpted mythological figure because of what she represents: beauty. The Medici Venus is a first-century B.C. copy of a Greek sculpture. This was common as the Romans gravitated towards Greek art—everyone did.

The sculpture was taken into ownership by the Medici and attributed to Praxiteles, but there is little foundation for that. The base says it was sculpted by the son of Apollodorus, but that is not true. Regardless, it is a beautiful sculpture that was undoubtedly admired by Botticelli and Michelangelo.

Location in Uffizi: Hall of Tribunes

Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci

uffizi gallery guided tour

The Annunciation was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci and Andrea del Verrocchio between 1472 – 1475. The painting depicts the moment Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will conceive and give birth to a son to be named Jesus, “Son of God”.

Location in Uffizi:  Hall 15

Madonna del Cardellino by Raphael

uffizi gallery guided tour

The Madonna del Cardellino or Madonna of the Goldfinch was painted by Raphael (Raffaello in Italian) in 1506 as a wedding gift for his friend Lorenzo Nasi.

Looking at the painting, the Madonna is shown as young and beautiful. She is clothed in red and blue. The red signifies the passion of Christ and the blue signifies the church.

Location in Uffizi:   Hall 66

La Primavera by Sandro Botticelli

uffizi gallery guided tour

La Primavera or “Spring” in English is considered to be one of the greatest paintings ever produced. That statement is not only about the painting’s beauty and artistic expression.

La Primavera defied the oppression of artistic expression, which arguably could have inspired a massive leap forward in art history. Some of the greatest artists that would ever live followed the career of Botticelli.

Location in Uffizi:   Hall of Botticelli (10 – 14)

The Birth of Venice by Sandro Botticelli

uffizi gallery guided tour

The Birth of Venus has become one of the world’s most famous Renaissance masterpieces. It was painted by Sandro Botticelli between 1482 and 1485 for the Medici family.

In the painting, you can observe Venus, the goddess of love, standing on a seashell in the center. To her right, Zephyr, the god of the west wind is blowing her to the shore. There, Pomona, the goddess of spring, is waiting with a cape to clothe the newborn deity.

Location in Uffizi:   Botticelli Rooms (10 – 14)

10 tips for visiting the Uffizi Gallery

Actually the tips became more than 10, because this post has been updated many times , with the answers to the most common questions I get about that museum.

How to book Uffizi tickets in advance

In high season, the queues to enter the museum can be really long , and with the summer heat they become a terrible experience. But even in the low season there can be queues, especially on weekends. This is why it’s so important to book tickets in advance. The earlier the better, because in summer and on holidays it often happens that tickets go sold out several days in advance.

To enter the Uffizi there are two queues:

  • A very long one , for those who have not booked and therefore have to buy a ticket (door .2)
  • A very fast one , for those who have previously booked the ticket

By booking the ticket online , you choose the day of the visit and a specific time slot for that day. This is the only way to get a skip-the-line ticket.

tips for visiting the Uffizi

After booking online: on the day of your visit you will need to collect your ticket at door n. 3 of the Uffizi , showing the booking code you received by email at the time of booking. That will take you max. 10 minutes, but you can collect your tickets at any moment of the day, even a few hours in advance. Once you have collected your tickets, you will be able to access the museum using the reserved queue (very fast going).

  • Here is the link to the official Uffizi website to book tickets.

Any other website is a re-seller, and will increase the price of the ticket of some extra euro. Anyway, those re-sellers like Viator or GetYourGuide are a good option in case the tickets are sold out on the official website.

Check opening days and times of Uffizi

You don’t want to go there when the museum is closed!

The Uffizi Gallery is open from 8.15 am to 6.30 pm, every day except Mondays , Christmas Day and January 1st.

Last entrance is 4.45 pm. Consider that the museum is very large and takes time, at least 1.5 hours. So I recommend not to get in after 4.30 pm or you won’t have enough time.

Best day of the week to visit the Uffizi Gallery

Probably you’ll want to visit the Uffizi Gallery during the least crowded days of the week. Of course, the museum gets a lot busier on weekends than on weekdays . Since the closing day of the Uffizi is Monday, Tuesday is also generally a very busy day.

In summer also Thursdays can be very busy, because it’s the day of the week when cruise ships are docking in Livorno, and cruise passengers are making a day trip to Florence. But they leave early, so the second part of the afternoon is usually slightly better.

The best days to visit the Uffizi without too many people are Wednesdays and Fridays.

The best time of the day to visit the Uffizi is right after the opening in the early morning. The museum opens at 8.15 am, and that’s the best time of the day to go there. Being an early bird is the best way to avoid any kind of line.

Also, recently the Uffizi has introduced an early bird discount : The ticket costs 19 euro (instead of 25) if you book to enter not later than 8.55am (or if you buy it at the counter before 8.45am). You must enter before 8.55.

The most crowded time is around lunchtime, so between 12 and 3 pm. After 4 pm is definitely less crowded , but since the museum closes at 6.30 pm, you won’t have a lot of time to visit.

Free admission on the first Sunday of the month

Every first Sunday of the month the entrance to the Uffizi Gallery is free (and also the entrance to the Accademia Gallery).

Personally I don’t recommend visiting the Uffizi on Sundays with free admission, because the museum is unbearably crowded. The line for entering is usually at least 2 hours long (sometimes even more), and you won’t really be able to see the paintings because each room is literally packed with people.

For this reason, most of the companies and free lance tour guides like me are not giving guided tours of the Uffizi on free admission Sundays. It would be just a waste of time for not being able to see anything.

If you just want to save money that’s fine, but if you want to have a full and satisfying experience of the Uffizi gallery and its collection, avoid the first Sunday of the month.

Take a guided tour

If you are not satisfied with admiring the paintings, but want to fully understand them , then take a guided tour! A professional tour guide will be able to explain all the secrets of the works of art on display, and will tell you about the life of the artists who created them.

A local tour guide will also help you maximize your time , selecting the most important paintings and avoiding wasting time in such a large museum. And you can make him/her any kind of question!

If instead you don’t mind sharing the tour with other people, take a look at this guided small group tour of the Uffizi Gallery (tickets are included). But keep in mind that compared to a private tour, the small group tour is only convenient if you book for 3 people or less. From 4 people up, the private tour is cheaper.

Make a checklist of the works of art you want to see

I recommend that you do a checklist before your visit, to make sure you d on’t miss any of your favorite paintings , especially if you decide to visit the gallery without a guide. I’m sure you don’t want to miss the Birth of Venus by Botticelli or Tondo Doni by Michelangelo.

  • Uffizi most important artworks to see

But don’t forget to look around, there are many other works of art to discover in addition to those on your checklist!

How long to visit the Uffizi Gallery?

Take your time! This is one of the most important tips for visiting the Uffizi Gallery. The museum is very large, there are thousands of paintings and sculptures displayed on two floors. Plan to take at least two or three hours for a standard visit , even longer if you are a real fan!

If, o n the other hand, you want to take a shorter visit and see only the best of the collection , the most famous masterpieces are on display on the second floor. At the end of the second floor gallery there is a quick exit.

Don’t take the quick exit if you want to check the bookshop . The one at the quick exit is really tiny, but the main one is wonderful.

Take a coffee with a view on piazza della Signoria

At the end of the second floor gallery there’s the cafeteria of the Uffizi. I honestly find it overpriced and food options are quite poor. However, the cafeteria is located right above the Loggia dei Lanzi, and has a magnificent view of Piazza della Signoria .

I recommend you just have a coffee or a cappuccino to have the opportunity to seat at a table and admire the view. Instead, don’t order food because it’s overpriced and really nothing special at all.

They also sell artisanal gelato, but once again is overpriced and you can get the double amount for the half of the price anywhere else in town.

What not to bring to the Uffizi

Objects prohibited inside the museum are:

  • Any bottle other than a half-liter bottle of water.
  • Selfie sticks, tripods and photo easels.
  • Blades and weapons
  • Long umbrellas and large backpacks (these can be left in the cloakroom!)

Also pay attention to the dress code.

Dress code at the Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi Gallery is not a church, but a national museum . This means that you don’t necessarily have to cover your shoulders and knees, or follow any particular dress code . However, there are still limits that should not be crossed, because in Italy museums are considered places of great respect . This doesn’t mean you have to dress up!

The Uffizi Gallery regulations say that clothing must be appropriate for the formal setting, so you cannot enter in a bathing suit or too skimpy clothes, period costumes, wedding dresses and “any other fancy dress undignified for such places” . In a nutshell, dress the way you prefer, as you feel most comfortable, without exaggerating!

Use the Uffizi ticket to visit other museums

Don’t throw away your Uffizi ticket, it can still be useful! In fact, it is also valid for free visits to the National Archaeological Museum and the Opificio delle Pietre dure Museum (in the five days following your visit to the Uffizi).

  • Learn more about the Opificio delle Pietre Dure Museum

If you are planning to visit also Pitti Palace and Boboli gardens, consider the 5-days combo ticket.

Don’t forget the Uffizi bookshop!

The Uffizi bookshop is huge and well-stocked, I really recommend you not to miss it. There are books about art, photography, children’s books, posters, souvenirs and local handicrafts inspired by the most famous pieces of art. It is the perfect place to buy something special to take home or to give as a gift.

Book sellers are very knowledgeable and helpful, they know their stuff!

Watch out: there are many small bookshops scattered throughout the gallery, but the one that deserves to be visited is the largest, which is located before the main exit. So if you want to visit the bookshop, don’t take the quick exit.
