The MV Jupiter, a Greek cruise ship, started sailing in 1961 as the Moledet. On October 21, 1988, it sank after leaving Piraeus, Greece. An Italian freight ship hit it.

The Achille Lauro, originally the ocean liner Willem Ruys, was converted into a cruise ship by Italian businessman Achille Lauro in 1965. It had a series of unfortunate events, including collisions and onboard fires.

In 1985, the ship was hijacked by members of the Palestine Liberation Front. On November 30, 1994, the Achille Lauro caught fire while sailing to South Africa. There were 979 passengers and crew onboard. The majority evacuated the next morning when the ship listed, but two people were killed before it sank on December 2.

The Final Voyage of the Sun Vista (May 1999)

The Sun Vista started its journey in 1963 as the SS Galileo Galilei for the Lloyd Triestino line. Over the years, it sailed for five different cruise lines, including as the first-ever cruise ship for Celebrity Cruises, the Meridian. In 1997, it was transferred to Sun Cruises and renamed the Sun Vista.

On May 20, 1999, a fire broke out in the ship’s engine room. The Sun Vista sank in the early morning hours of May 21 in the Strait of Malacca. Fortunately, all passengers and crew were able to escape safely.

The Sinking of the Britanis (October 2000)

The Britanis began its life as the luxury ocean liner SS Monterey in 1932. It later sailed for Chandris under their “Fantasy Cruises” division starting in February 1971. When Chandris shifted focus to the Celebrity Cruises brand, all Fantasy Cruises operations ceased. In 1998, the ship was sold to AG Belofin and renamed Belofin-1.

Instead of being refurbished, the Britanis was sold to scrappers. While being towed to a scrapyard from Brazil, it developed a leak at the back of the ship. With no one on board, the ship was cut free and capsized off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa.

The Sinking of SeaBreeze (December 2000)

The SeaBreeze, originally named Federico C., was launched in 1958 and sailed for Costa Cruises. In 1983, it was transferred to Premier Cruises and renamed three times.

Premier Cruises went out of business in September 2000, leading to the ship being laid up. While being moved from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Charleston, South Carolina, by its new owner, Cruise Ventures III, the SeaBreeze sank about 225 nautical miles off the coast of Virginia. All 34 crew members on board were rescued safely.

The ship sank due to the boiler breaking off, causing significant damage to the vessel.

The Sinking of MV Explorer (November 2007)

The MV Explorer, originally the MS Lindblad Explorer, began her career in 1969 as the first ship of her kind to sail through the Antarctic Ocean.

Initially, it was believed that all passengers and crew were safe. However, two French citizens, Jean Christophe Allain, 45, and his daughter Maud, 16, were reported missing and never found.

The Capsizing of Costa Concordia (January 2012)

The evacuation took over six hours and resulted in 32 deaths. An investigation focused on the crew’s actions, particularly Captain Schettino’s, as he left the ship while passengers were still on board.

Why don’t they ever sink ships to create natural reefs?

PORT CANAVERAL, FL — The  Disney Magic is the latest victim of the Covid-19 shutdown.   Disney Cruise Line announced today that  the Magic ,   the first cruise ship in the Disney fleet, will be sunk and turned into an artificial reef.

With the high cost of maintaining the ship during the cruise industry shutdown, the write-off will help boost Disney’s bottom line.

I own a share of Disney. Why don’t I get these calls?

Robert “Bob” Chapek, CEO, and talking head for Robert “Bob” Iger, CEO (the one who actually does things for Disney), made the announcement during a call with investors.

“Keeping up a cruise ship that is not taking on passengers is expensive. For, example, there is still a crew onboard the ship. Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure we’ll evacuate them before we sink the darned thing. We’ll run the numbers again on that to make sure it makes sense.

“While some are concerned about the future of Disney Cruise Line, this (sinking) is actually going to make us money. First, Disney fans will buy anything. Anything! So we’re selling off anything we can, starting with stuff that could harm the environment, like oil, grease, fuel, etc. And as we take things other things off the ship, we’ll sell them, too.”

Milking it for more

Chapek Iger One of the Bobs was certain that Disney would find more ways to make the scuttling of the Disney Magic profitable.

“Universal has paid us a ton for ‘first shot’ rights,” Bob explains. “That means they will get to take the first shots at sinking the ship. They get great footage, and we get paid. We’ve already got the boys in marketing working on various scenarios and how we’ll spin it.”

The position of the new reef has yet to be determined. Disney has shared a list of potential locations, however. They are, in particular order:

• the Seven Seas Lagoon;
• the Rainbow Reef at Disney’s Aulani Bed & Breakfast, Resort & Spa;
• the Spring at Disney’s Springs; or
• just adding it to the junk pile at Epcot’s New Jersey Pavilion.

'We all suffer from PTSD': 10 years after the Costa Concordia cruise disaster, memories remain

GIGLIO, Italy — Ten years have passed since the Costa Concordia cruise ship slammed into a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio. But for the passengers on board and the residents who welcomed them ashore, the memories of that harrowing, freezing night remain vividly etched into their minds.

The dinner plates that flew off the tables when the rocks first gashed the hull. The blackout after the ship's engine room flooded and its generators failed. The final mad scramble to evacuate the listing liner and then the extraordinary generosity of Giglio islanders who offered shoes, sweatshirts and shelter until the sun rose and passengers were ferried to the mainland.

Italy on Thursday is marking the 10th anniversary of the Concordia disaster with a daylong commemoration that will end with a candlelit vigil near the moment the ship hit the reef: 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2012. The events will honor the 32 people who died that night, the 4,200 survivors, but also the residents of Giglio, who took in passengers and crew and then lived with the Concordia's wrecked carcass off their shore for another two years until it was righted and hauled away for scrap.

“For us islanders, when we remember some event, we always refer to whether it was before or after the Concordia,” said Matteo Coppa, who was 23 and fishing on the jetty when the darkened Concordia listed toward shore and then collapsed onto its side in the water.

“I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after,” he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats.

The sad anniversary comes as the cruise industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the coronavirus pandemic, is once again in the spotlight because of COVID-19 outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control last month  warned people across-the-board not to go on cruises, regardless of their vaccination status, because of the risks of infection.

'We all suffer from PTSD'

For Concordia survivor Georgia Ananias, the COVID-19 infections are just the latest evidence that passenger safety still isn’t a top priority for the cruise ship industry. Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily.

“I always said this will not define me, but you have no choice," Ananias said in an interview from her home in Los Angeles, Calif. “We all suffer from PTSD. We had a lot of guilt that we survived and 32 other people died.”

Prosecutors blamed the delayed evacuation order and conflicting instructions given by crew for the chaos that ensued as passengers scrambled to get off the ship. The captain, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison sentence for manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning a ship before all the passengers and crew had evacuated.

Ananias and her family declined Costa’s initial $14,500 compensation offered to each passenger and sued Costa, a unit of U.S.-based Carnival Corp., to try to cover the cost of their medical bills and therapy for the post-traumatic stress they have suffered. But after eight years in the U.S. and then Italian court system, they lost their case.

“I think people need to be aware that when you go on a cruise, that if there is a problem, you will not have the justice that you may be used to in the country in which you are living,” said Ananias, who went onto become a top official in the International Cruise Victims association, an advocacy group that lobbies to improve safety aboard ships and increase transparency and accountability in the industry.

Cruise Lines International Association, the world’s largest cruise industry trade association, stressed in a statement to The Associated Press that passenger and crew safety was the industry's top priority, and that cruising remains one of the safest vacation experiences available.

“Our thoughts continue to be with the victims of the Concordia tragedy and their families on this sad anniversary," CLIA said. It said it has worked over the past 10 years with the International Maritime Organization and the maritime industry to “drive a safety culture that is based on continuous improvement."

For Giglio Mayor Sergio Ortelli, the memories of that night run the gamut: the horror of seeing the capsized ship, the scramble to coordinate rescue services on shore, the recovery of the first bodies and then the pride that islanders rose to the occasion to tend to the survivors.

Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 1,000-foot long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering. But the night of the disaster, a Friday the 13th, remains seared in his memory.

“It was a night that, in addition to being a tragedy, had a beautiful side because the response of the people was a spontaneous gesture that was appreciated around the world,” Ortelli said.

It seemed the natural thing to do at the time. “But then we realized that on that night, in just a few hours, we did something incredible.”

Costa Concordia

In the past, many ships that sank 100 or so years ago were ocean liners and nothing like the mega-cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers at a time.

The Costa Concordia was a much more recent example of a cruise ship sinking of the large modern-day design many of us know and love.

The vessel hit a reef off the coast of Italy in 2012 and capsized, killing 32 people.

The Costa Concordia was carrying 4,229 passengers and crew at the time of the incident. Thankfully, most people were able to evacuate the ship before it sank.

The captain of the Costa Concordia was later convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison. One year of that sentence was for leaving the ship early instead of being the last to leave as per one of the duties of a highly-paid cruise captain salary .

In 1994, the MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea after hitting a storm, killing 852 people.

The MS Estonia was a cruise ferry carrying 989 passengers and crew at the time of the incident. It was traveling from Tallinn, Estonia to Stockholm, Sweden, when it hit a storm and started taking on water.

The Dongfang zhi Xing was carrying 454 passengers and crew at the time of the accident. Only 12 people were able to be rescued from the ship.

MTS Oceanos (1991)

The Oceanos was a French-built Greek-owned cruise ship that sank off the coast of South Africa in 1991. The vessel started taking on water after a series of leaks in the hull.

The ship had a capacity of 550 passengers and 250 crew.

All passengers and crew were successfully evacuated from the ship before it completely sunk. No one was killed or injured in the incident.

However, the captain and some crew members were later arrested and convicted of negligence for fleeing the ship while passengers were still on board.

Sun Vista (SS Galileo Galilei) (1999)

The SS Sun Vista was a cruise ship that caught fire and sank in 1999. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while it was sailing from Malaysia to Singapore.

All 1,090 passengers and crew were evacuated from the ship before it sank. No one was killed but some people were injured in the incident and needed hospitalization.

The SeaBreeze cruise ship sank off the coast of North Carolina in December 2000.   This was allegedly due to a boiler breaking off and damaging the ship and the engine room flooding.

Coast guard rescuers at the time did not expect the ship to sink and thought it could be towed to shore by tug boats, but the captain demanded everyone be extracted from the ship as soon as possible.

Subsequently, the ship sank in  Panamanian waters, which was potentially convenient as any investigation would have expected to have been much less stringent than those carried out by American investigators had it sunk in very nearby American waters.

There was much suspicion around the sinking because the scrap value of the ship was estimated to be around $5 to $6 million, which was much less than its insurance payout value of $20 million.

The cruise ship had a capacity of 840 passengers and 400 crew. 

At the time of the incident, there were 34 people all onboard who were all extracted to safety.

Belofin-1 (SS Monterey ) (2000)

The Belofin-1 had recently been sold for scrap and was meant to be being towed to India, but went via Mexico from Ukraine in 2000 when it sank near just over 90km from Cape Town, South Africa.

The vessel started taking on water and listing, so the tug boats cut here free and allowed how to sink.

MV Explorer (2007)

Disney Ship Hammered By Hurricane Sandy, Video Footage Shows Intense Flooding And Rocking Of Cruise Ship

On Monday, CNN posted video footage sent from a passenger aboard a Disney ship, which shows the boat being flooded and massive shaking hammered by Hurricane Sandy.

According to CNN's iReport, user tneyedoc2020 and his wife embarked on a seven-day Disney cruise for a vacation. However, on Friday as it sailed through Miami, Fla., the ship experienced rocking and flooding from Hurricane Sandy as it made its way up the East Coast.

"There was a moment in the night where they ship tilted so far to the right that the furniture moved across our room. If you think about how far a thirteenth-story ship has to tilt for furniture to move, it says a lot," he told CNN iReport.

The video below was taken during the early evening hours on Friday. He said by midnight on Saturday, the ship was being tossed in many directions, with doors in the suite opening and closing rapidly. Two hours later, the passenger reported, the ship was being violently tossed from side-to-side, furniture went flying, and glassware shattered.

The Disney ship did dock safely severe hours later in Port Canaveral, Fla.

The passenger who captured the video said the captain and crew were sorry the cruise experienced rough patches caused by the storm on its sixth night, which was predicted to be less harsh. He said the captain announced over an intercom that passengers should stay in their cabins.

"The ship was rising and dropping into the water pretty dramatically; it was really startling at times," he told CNN. "But the crew was doing the best they could. Many crew members, some with over 10 years of experience on various ships, told us it was the worst night they have ever seen."

The user said Disney gave all passengers a 25 percent off discount for their next cruise.

Disney Treasure: Latest Updates from Newest Disney Cruise Line Ship Debuting 2024

Welcome to the official ship’s log for the Disney Treasure ! As a blog reader, you’re invited to follow along on this page for an exclusive look into the complex shipbuilding process. This archive will document all the important milestones of the Disney Treasure’s journey.

The Disney Treasure’s story began with the start of construction in January of 2023 and has continued to evolve ever since. You can return here for the latest developments in the Disney Treasure’s progress as the world patiently waits for Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship to officially set sail in 2024. The adventure is just beginning!

A brand-new “Guardians of the Galaxy” dinner show is debuting at Worlds of Marvel on the Disney Treasure!

Following the structural completion milestone of the Disney Treasure in December 2023, the team in Papenburg, Germany has been focused on building out the interior spaces of the ship. This work includes preparations to bring Disney Cruise Line’s immersive Marvel-themed dining experience, Worlds of Marvel, to the Disney Treasure. In light of the progress being made, Ship’s Log readers are among the first to learn about the new “Guardians of the Galaxy” dinner show coming to Worlds of Marvel on the Disney Treasure titled, “Marvel Celebration of Heroes: Groot Remix.”

The story will follow Groot as he brings guests along for an on-screen quest to throw the ultimate surprise party for his friend, Rocket. All the while, diners will eat to the beat of an “awesome mix” of hit songs and can test their knowledge of the Marvel universe with trivia for the whole family. The new show will be offered to guests during one of two distinct nights at Worlds of Marvel, where they will also experience “Avengers: Quantum Encounter,” which first premiered on the Disney Wish.

There are so many incredible Imagineers and cast members who have been working behind the scenes to ensure every detail on the Disney Treasure will be perfect for future guests. Among them is Lina Barr, a senior concept designer whose role on the project is to create custom artwork that will outfit the signature venues on Disney Cruise Line’s growing fleet. If you’ve sailed on the Disney Wish, you’ve already experienced a sample of Lina’s incredible work. The photos above show Lina in her office, where she is currently in the process of finalizing several new pieces for the Disney Treasure, along with a sneak peek at some of the artwork she is working on. Where do you think these designs will appear on the ship?  

Lina shared a little bit about her creative process with us … It begins with a conversation with the Walt Disney Imagineering team, where she learns about the theming of each venue planned for the Disney Treasure, whether that be the Agrabah-inspired Grand Hall or the Jungle Cruise-inspired lounge, Skipper Society. This is not your typical meeting, but instead a true, collaborative brainstorm between artist and interior designer. These conversations empower Lina to develop dynamic artwork that will complement each space onboard. She leans into the inspiration for each venue to create a rough sketch on her computer to start, later adding color and details.  

The magic is so often in the small details that Lina imbues in her pieces, from hidden Mickeys to other story-driven Easter eggs that future guests can discover during their voyage. After a project is completed, Lina loves watching guests react to her designs as they encounter secret storytelling that only true Disney fans would notice.

First announced during the  Grand Reveal of the Disney Treasure  last year, Jumbeaux’s Sweets is a fanciful new dessert destination set to debut onboard the ship later this year. 

How does a space go from concept to reality? It’s all in the details! And Jumbeaux’s Sweets, which will draw inspiration from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award®-winning “Zootopia,” is just one example of how Disney Imagineers are collaborating with Disney Animation to turn beloved Disney stories into real-life experiences at sea onboard the Disney Treasure. 

From the precise shade of bubblegum pink-striped wallpaper to the vintage-style light fixtures, each décor element inside Jumbeaux’s Sweets was thoughtfully chosen by Imagineers to transport future Disney Cruise Line guests into the colorful world of Zootopia. The venue’s central design feature will be an eye-catching statue of the film’s unlikely crime-solving duo, Officer Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. 

The statue-building process began with sketched designs and a collaboration between Imagineers and the Walt Disney Animation team to create a one-of-a-kind digital model of the piece. The precise measurements from the digital model were used to cast the statue in bronze. Finally, the statue was transported to Florida to be painted. 

Jay Abruzzese can be seen adding the finishing touches to both characters. Soon the statue will be ready to be installed inside Jumbeaux’s Sweets and complete the vision Imagineers dreamed up long ago for the venue. 

A few weeks ago, Meyer Werft Shipyard was bustling with activity when the Disney Treasure was set afloat for the first time. Water from the Ems River was pumped into the building dock where the ship is being constructed, lifting the hull from the floor of the chamber. The shipyard team was then able to guide the Disney Treasure to a new location, where it will undergo the next phase of construction. 

Why was the Disney Treasure moved? The team needed to make room for the Disney Destiny, the sister ship to the Disney Wish and the Disney Treasure! This milestone is an exciting moment for everyone at Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering, signifying continued progress on the Disney Treasure and celebrating the ongoing expansion of the fleet. The Disney Treasure and the Disney Destiny will soon be next to each other in the shipyard, marking an unprecedented era of growth for Disney Cruise Line. 

A new sculpture, bound for the Haunted Mansion Parlor onboard the Disney Treasure, is being crafted at a dedicated Walt Disney Imagineering workshop at Walt Disney World Resort. Who inspired this mysterious bust? The sculpture was modeled in the image of the famed Disney Legend, Rolly Crump. And the fact that today is Rolly’s birthday makes this Ship’s Log reveal all the more special as the world remembers him and his many contributions to Disney Parks.

Nicknamed “Rolly” by Walt Disney himself, ­ during the early days of the company and played an integral role in designing the original Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Resort. Six decades later, the Haunted Mansion Parlor will unlock the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga for Disney Cruise Line guests. The venue will be imbued with Crump’s unique brand of humor and is a proud continuation of his legacy, celebrating the weird and the fantastical.

Part of Rolly’s larger creative concept for a “Museum of the Weird” in the Haunted Mansion, his original vision included a character that appeared to be melting like a candle. It was only fitting for the design for Rolly’s memorial bust to stem from his own ideas, which led to the sculpted drips on the side of his face and a memorial plaque that reads, “BROTHER ROLAND- FOREVER REVERED FOR EMBRACING THE WEIRD.” When the Disney Treasure sets sail, Rolly Crump’s statue will have a place of honor within the Haunted Mansion Parlor. 

It’s a new year with new progress being made on the Disney Treasure at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg Germany. Regular Ship’s Log readers may remember April’s surprise reveal of the Disney Treasure bow artwork. The whimsical design, which features Captain Minnie Mouse in her signature adventure-themed outfit, has now taken shape on the hull of the Disney Treasure. In step with the existing Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Treasure continues a two-decades-long tradition of carrying a unique character-inspired art piece on its bow. Its completion marks an exciting milestone for the Disney Treasure as it begins the next stage of construction. The installation process began when the shipyard team welded a number of pre-cut steel plates to the Disney Treasure’s hull. Once the framework of the design had been secured, the plates were painted by hand to obtain their iconic golden hue and sealed with a special topcoat. The artwork is just one of the many details that will distinguish the Disney Treasure when it sets sail later this year!

The Disney Treasure has reached yet another milestone in construction – the completion of its last block! In case you’re not familiar with this maritime milestone, it’s important to know that cruise ships are built in blocks (sections). With the last block in place, this means that the ship is now structurally complete and outfitting work can begin.

The last block on the Disney Treasure will eventually house areas such as the adults-only Quiet Cove area (including Cove Café) and Hero Zone, a futuristic sports arena where physical activity blends with imagination, offering highly produced show experiences in addition to free-play sports.

With this latest milestone reached, the Disney Treasure can now move towards completion of its interior.

The holidays are quickly approaching, but construction of the Disney Treasure hasn’t slowed down at Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany. In fact, a lot of progress has taken place in recent weeks, including the lifting of the forward and aft funnels to their rightful place atop the ship. Complete with a coat of primer paint, the icons that are known across the entire fleet have officially found their new home, bringing the Disney Treasure one step closer to completion.  

Of course, the funnels on the Disney Treasure aren’t just for looks – guests will also be able to plunge through the forward funnel while riding the AquaMouse, Disney’s attraction at sea, or even stay inside the funnel in the two-story EPCOT-themed Tomorrow Tower Suite!

The ship’s log will continue to track the progress of the Disney Treasure until its maiden voyage, which is just a little over a year away in December 2024, so stay tuned for more updates and news!

I have always loved the sea. As soon as I learned to walk, I toddled right into the ocean. In my later years, I served proudly as Captain of a luxurious ocean liner, every voyage its own adventure.

In fact, my fiancé and I were to be wed at sea, a celebration of my two greatest loves. But alas, it was not to be. My untimely demise saw to that.

In life, I treasured my private parlor, where I often entertained passengers and guests. I cannot enjoy it the way I did before—but mind you, I do still enjoy it.

I hope you will visit. In my parlor, all guests—dear or departed, invited or otherwise—are welcome.

In December 2024, the curtain will open on a brand-new original Broadway-style production on the Disney Treasure. Joining a dazzling lineup of fan-favorite shows including “Beauty and the Beast” and “Disney Seas the Adventure,” will be none other than “Disney The Tale of Moana.” Debuting exclusively at the Walt Disney Theatre onboard the Disney Treasure, “Disney The Tale of Moana” will bring the adventurous journey of Moana, inspired by the Walt Disney Animation Studios film, to center stage for the first time. The show will follow Moana as she embarks on an incredible journey to save her island after she is chosen by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Fans of the original film will recognize many beloved characters like Gramma Tala, Maui and Tamatoa when they appear on stage, as well as songs from the film’s iconic soundtrack.

After traveling all the way from Poland, the  Disney Treasure’s  forward funnel has arrived at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany! The funnel will soon be secured in its rightful place atop the Disney Treasure and will be given a coat of shiny red paint to match the iconic  Disney Cruise Line  look. When the first guests set sail onboard the Disney Treasure in December of 2024, they will be able to plunge through the forward funnel while riding Disney Cruise Line’s beloved attraction at sea, the AquaMouse, and watch their favorite Disney movies via the Funnel Vision screen by the family pool. Some guests may even choose to stay inside the forward funnel’s EPCOT-themed Tomorrow Tower Suite!

Today was a monumental day for all the Disney Cruise Line fans, cast members, crew members and Disney Imagineers who are eagerly waiting for the Disney Treasure to set sail in December 2024. This morning, Disney Cruise Line revealed all-new spaces that will debut on the Disney Treasure with the help of Arthur Quinn, a self-proclaimed solo adventurer who stumbled across a magical treasure map while rummaging through his grandmother’s study. With the help of fast-forward magic, Arthur was transported to the Disney Treasure, where he discovered the many exciting experiences and new stories that guests will encounter onboard. At the end of his journey, Arthur made the most important discovery of all – the true meaning of the ship’s name. The name, the Disney Treasure, represents something much more valuable than jewels or gold. The true treasure that awaits every adventurer lies in the memories made during their journey. This Disney Treasure update is coming to you from Celebration, Florida, the headquarters for Disney Cruise Line. Today, the Disney Cruise Line team is thrilled to be debuting an artist rendering of the ship’s stern for the very first time! For 25 years, each ship in the fleet has been adorned with characters from beloved Disney stories. The Disney Treasure will follow this tradition with its own signature character sculptures that honor the ship’s motif of adventure, Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Harnessing the power of Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, Peter Pan will levitate next to the Disney Treasure to add the finishing touch to the ship’s stern filigree. Meanwhile, Peter Pan’s longtime rival, Captain Hook can be seen leaning out a porthole with a vengeful expression on his face. Paintbrush and paint bucket in hand, Peter Pan sports a mischievous grin as he glances back at Captain Hook, who is dripping in yellow paint.

With today’s installment of the bridge block, the Disney Treasure now has everything it needs to sail through waterways around the world. The bridge block contains important navigational equipment for the ship, including the wheel! The future captain and their crew will be able to control the ship’s direction and speed from an onboard command center that looks out towards the horizon with floor to ceiling windows. This exciting update means we are one step closer to the day when the Disney Treasure will transport guests to beautiful destinations and explore the globe.

The Disney Treasure will continue the Disney Cruise Line tradition of bringing Broadway-style stage shows across the globe in a grand entertainment venue fit for original Disney musicals. However, before the curtain rises and performers dazzle future Disney Cruise Line guests, Disney Imagineers and crew at Meyer Werft shipyard must weld what will someday become The Walt Disney Theatre to the Disney Treasure. It’s exciting to think that this space will soon be filled with Disney tunes and the heartwarming stories of favorite Disney adventurers!

Marvelous progress took place today at Meyer Werft shipyard as the bow of the Disney Treasure was mounted to the forward section of the ship. This photo illustrates how the shipyard team carefully installs the bow block using a crane. The bow block was held in position with the help of a high-precision laser scanner until it was fully welded to the foreship. As the Disney Treasure takes form, this moment marks the first time that the iconic silhouette of the ship can be recognized. As with all ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Treasure takes its inspiration from classic ocean liners of the early 20 th century with a modern flair.

The bow of the Disney Treasure has made its way to Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, arriving today aboard a barge with the aid of a helpful towboat. This photo showcases a first step in the installation process for the ship’s bow filigree, which is being protected by a large tarp. The outline of the design has already been sketched out in red ink on the ship’s surface and will be completed at a later point in the construction process.

Each Disney Cruise Line fleet ship has its own distinct, elegant piece of artwork embossed on its bow. Revealing the unique designs created for the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and the Disney Wish marked a memorable moment for each vessel during its construction and the Disney Treasure is no different. Today, Disney Cruise Line debuted the Disney Treasure’s captivating bow filigree for the first time. The design features a portrait of Minnie Mouse wearing her brand-new, adventure-ready ensemble as well as some hidden silhouettes of other beloved characters. Voyager Minnie’s look was designed especially for the Disney Treasure to complement its motif of adventure. Later on in the construction process, this artwork will be installed onto the bow of the ship for all to enjoy.

The weather in Germany may have been rainy, but spirits were high thanks to the completion of another maritime milestone for the Disney Treasure – the Keel Laying Ceremony. As a part of the ceremony, a newly minted coin is placed under the keel of the ship to foster good fortune for the ship and its crew in the years to come. Just like the steel-cutting ceremony, keel laying traditions date back to the times of wooden ships. The coin itself is quite unique and depicts a carved portrait of Captain Minnie Mouse, sporting a fashionable new adventure outfit designed for the new ship.

Today, the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany received a very exciting delivery from Rostock, Germany– the Disney Treasure’s Floating Engine Room Unit! The Floating Engine Room Unit, sometimes called a FERU for short, is a critical piece when it comes to building the Disney Treasure. Upon the ship’s completion, the FERU will serve as the main source of power, housing the main motors and liquified natural gas tanks. The FERU is also where all the auxiliary machinery needed for cooling water, fuel, air supply and other essential support systems will be kept. The above picture shows the FERU during its journey from Denmark!

Another day at Meyer Werft shipyard means they’re another step closer to completing the Disney Treasure. One way to recognize a Disney Cruise Line vessel is to look for the iconic red funnels standing proudly on the top deck. The Disney Treasure will follow the sleek, classic aesthetic of all Disney Cruise Line ships that have come before it, meaning it will continue upholding the tradition of featuring the eye-catching funnels. Today the second funnel arrived at the shipyard from Poland. Pretty soon, it will receive a coat of bright red paint and be installed on the ship. It’s a thrilling time for the Disney Treasure as more and more pieces of the ship arrive.

Today, the team at the Meyer Werft shipyard cut the first piece of steel for the Disney Treasure. Sparks were flying as a special machine called a plasma cutter, which is housed within the yard’s laser cutting room, was used to cut the steel in the shape of a Disney cruise ship. The ceremony was a huge milestone for Disney Imagineers and crew building the Disney Treasure, marking the official start of construction.

One thing that makes this steel-cutting ceremony so meaningful is it’s a continuation of a longtime maritime tradition. The answer is thankfully no – there has never been a reported incident of a Disney Cruise Ship sinking. The company takes safety and security very seriously, and all their ships are built to the highest safety standards with multiple failsafe systems in place. They also employ some of the best marine engineers in the industry who are constantly monitoring and maintaining their vessels.

In addition to this, all crew members undergo rigorous training on board before they can sail as part of a Disney Cruise Line voyage. This includes emergency response drills so they are prepared for any eventuality while they’re out at sea.

Carnival Triumph:  What was supposed to be a four-day jaunt to the Caribbean became an eight-day nightmare when an engine fire left the ship floating in the Gulf of Mexico without power, air-conditioning, or a working septic system.

Carnival Splendor:  Carnival's Splendor suffered a similar fate as Carnival's Triumph in November 2011. Both were stranded by engine fires, though the Splendor was left floating in the Pacific Ocean. After three days the Splendor and its 4,500 passengers were towed back to the San Diego Bay.

Costa Concordia:  This Italian cruise ship ran aground on a reef off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, in January 2012 and toppled onto its side. Of the 4,200 aboard, 32 died and 64 were injured, according to the Associated Press . The half-submerged ship is still being removed.

Seabourn Spirits:  In 2005, while 100 miles off the coast of Somalia, pirates in speedboats attacked the small cruise ship. The pirates fired on it with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before the captain changed course and got away. None of the ship's 300 passengers were hurt, and the ship made it to the Seychelles where the rocket damage was repaired.

Celebrity Mercury:  More than 400 of the 2,600 passengers and crew onboard the Mercury were stricken ill in 2010 in what the Centers for Disease control deemed a norovirus outbreak . The virus caused widespread vomiting and other gastrointestinal ills on the ship, which left from Charleston, S.C.

Norwegian Dawn:  At least 62 cabins were flooded when a 70-foot wave smashed into the Dawn, in 2005. About 300 of the ship's passengers disembarked early, in Charleston, after the storm had passed.

S.S. Eastland:  In 1915, just three years after the Titanic sank, the S.S. Eastland passenger tour ship rolled over while in port in downtown Chicago. More than 840 of its 2,500 passengers died in the accident.

RMS Titanic:  The original cruise ship disaster, the "unsinkable ship" struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its maiden voyage in 1912 and sank into the icy water, killing more than 1,500 of its 2,200 passengers and crew.

NEWS: Disney Shares Major Update on MYSTERIOUS Cruise Ship

Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship is gearing up to set sail and the more we learn about it, the more excited we get !

The Disney Adventure ship will be one of the latest additions to the growing fleet of Disney cruise ships, boasting a home port in Singapore and promises to be quite a stunner. We don’t know much about this ship yet , but Disney just shared a ton of new details!

The Disney Adventure will be one of the newest additions to the ever-growing fleet of Disney cruise ships and Disney’s teasing us with some new information about it! Up until now, we’ve only known scarce details like promises of more MARVEL, Pixar, and of course Disney stories, too.

Beginning next year, families can embark on three- and four-night itineraries that “will be both a journey and a destination filled with endless possibilities for fun the whole family will enjoy.”

There will be lots of new areas aboard the Disney Adventure:

• In the Disney Imagination Garden , journey through an enchanted valley inspired by more than 100 years of heroic and heartwarming Disney stories – from Mowgli exploring the jungle to Moana taming the high seas. This imaginative gathering space will also be home to dazzling performances on an open-air stage.
• At Disney Discovery Reef , travel down to the ocean floor to explore the nautical worlds of “The Little Mermaid,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Finding Nemo” and “Luca” complete with uniquely themed shopping and dining options. Inspired by the expansive world of “Big Hero 6,” San Fransokyo Street will be a bustling family entertainment area featuring interactive games and activities, shops, cinemas and more.
• At Wayfinder Bay , be called by “the line where the sky meets the sea” to a poolside retreat reflecting the Pacific Islands-inspired artistry of “Moana” with some of the most stunning views aboard the Disney Adventure.
• Venture into the enchanted Town Square — a fantastical forest filled with shops, lounges, cafes, restaurants and entertainment venues inspired by the magical kingdoms from “Tangled,” “Cinderella,” “Frozen,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “The Princess and the Frog” and more.
• Heroes will unite at Marvel Landing where Avengers-level adventure featuring thrilling attractions and all-new experience await.
• At Toy Story Place, little ones will pal around with friends from Andy’s Room in a whimsical and interactive water play zone along with different themed food venues.

Plus, Disney confirmed that the Adventure will have “premium concierge accommodations” including high-end shopping, spa, and fitness facilities.

This seventh ship in Disney’s fleet is currently under construction in Germany and, once completed, will have its home port in Singapore . We can expect to see Disney, Marvel, and Pixar stories aboard this new ship.

Disney Cruise Line setting sail on first Asia-based ship in 2025

D isney Cruise Line has announced its first ship with a home port in Asia, and it will be setting sail for three- and four-night itineraries next year. 

The Disney Adventure, currently under construction at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, will set sail in 2025 from Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least five years, as a result of a collaboration between Disney Cruise Line and the SIngapore Tourism Board.

"We're bringing the magic of Disney Cruise Line to Asia for the first time ever, and we want to give our guests the cruise relaxation and Disney fun they can only experience aboard one of our ships," Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line, said in a press release on June 26. 

"When they set sail on the Disney Adventure, guests will find incredible, immersive areas that bring the worlds of Disney, Pixar and Marvel to life in ways like never before – and these uniquely Disney experiences will inspire families to reconnect, recharge and make unforgettable memories that they'll cherish forever."

Disney Adventure will have seven themed areas throughout the ship, including San Fransokyo Street from "Big Hero 6," a town square, Marvel Landing and a Toy Story Place, among others.

The southeast Asian cruise is meant to be the ultimate family travel experience, with "dedicated spaces and clubs for kids, tweens and teens, while adults relax and unwind with premium dining, lounge and spa experiences."

The ship is expected to have the capacity for about 6,700 guests and around 2,500 crew members. More details about the first voyage and onboard experiences will be released on the Disney Parks Blog at a later date.

Travel | disney treasure cruise ship mines old source material again with ‘aristocats’ jazz lounge.

The latest addition comes from the 1970 animated feature “The Aristocats.”

The Scat Cat Lounge paying homage to one of the most iconic voice actors, Scatman Crothers, will be pounding out jazz just off the atrium with cat-themed adornments to what’s promised to be an old-school jazz club.

Images and details of the new venue were posted Thursday to the Disney Parks Blog touting the addition as bringing “the groovy penthouse performance of ‘Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat’ into the real world for the first time.”

The piano, for instance, will sport paw prints from the wet paint scene from the movie while the carpeting will mirror ornate designs similar to those animated in the Parisian maison of Madame Adelaide Bonfamille, the owner of well-to-do Eva Gabor-voiced character Duchess and her kittens. Fans of the film will see their silhouettes at the entrance while the musical street feline Scat Cat’s signature horn will double as a door handle. Among the decorations will be hidden images of a certain mouse. Nope, not Mickey, but Roquefort.

As it’s adjacent to the Grand Hall, which is themed to the fictional Middle Eastern land of Agrabah from “Aladdin,” the colors and architecture will pull from a similar palate.

The drink menu will include special cocktails such as the Créme de la Créme Martini and a beverage called The Cat Drink.

Disney Cruise Line queues up old and new features for new ship Disney Treasure

The venue joins Disney Treasure spaces themed to iconic theme park rides and movies including “The Haunted Mansion,” “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “Jungle Cruise.”

Construction on the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel continues at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

The sister ship to Disney Wish that debuted in 2022 will begin sailing from Port Canaveral in December, taking on seven-night Caribbean itineraries.

A third ship in the Wish class, Disney Destiny, is due in 2025, and its home port and itineraries are expected to be revealed later this summer.

The three ships, along with the purchase of the unfinished Global Dream cruise ship that DCL acquired in 2023 and was renamed Disney Adventure, will grow the DCL fleet to eight vessels by the end of 2025.
