Live reviews

Seeing them in 83 at Oakland Coliseum was what I was hoping to see in Morongo. Don’t get me wrong it was great because Tom Bailey is one of the best I have ever heard or seen in concert. I have seen everyone from Metallica, Rolling Stones, Rick James, Prince, Madonna and whoever else you can think of. When I saw them perform they had 7-9 people playing instruments live, with singing live without backtracking tape in background. You missed all the nuisances that you look for in each unique song. They missed the high end synths which give it the melody and little sampling of stuttering bass lines performed on synths to a live bass. I liked the 80’s synth sound and found that it was basically a Vegas back up band with Tom leading. Adding notes and missing notes ( being that I play synth and drums) you notice all the backtracking sounds that aren’t being produced by the musicians on stage. I don’t know if it’s for money reasons or just plain laziness on Toms part but he could have hired a few professional musicians like he had in original band to reproduce the same sounds and music from the 80’s. Great music with subpar effort in my opinion.

Tom was in fine voice and the sound mix was very good. We had the good fortune of sitting close to the stage (so we didn't get rained on the entire show). Good mix of classic TT songs and a few of the new ones interspersed.

I only wish Tom and his band had been the headliner and played MORE songs because he looks and sounds great compared to Boy George who looks FAT and sounds like he has lost about three register ranges in his formerly beautiful voice.

Had read reviews about Tom Bailey before the concert, saying he was well worth seeing and he didn't disappoint. It was like being transported back to the 80s ! All the old hits from The Thompson Twins era along with newer tracks from his album Science Fiction. Backing band of three girls were excellent too!! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tom Bailey was awesome! There were technically difficulties which slowed the momentum down, but he was great to come back out and get it going again. I felt bad about the difficulties, but knew it wasn't the performers fault. I wish he could have played longer!

Saw tom bailey and culture club at Sandia casino albuquerque NM. Nothing but perfection from both performances. Love it when an artist gives 100% to entertaining an audience!!! I would love to see either tom or culture club again(and again).

We heard only one song, he sounded great. Unfortunately we got rained out and had to leave the concert early. The stage was full of water and he had to get off the Stage.

Music + concerts, music + concerts | thompson twins’ tom bailey revisits the ’80s ahead of totally tubular festival.

“Someone told me I didn’t play a Thompson Twins song live for 27 years,” Bailey says on a recent call from his London apartment. “Which is kind of a weird thing. But I mean, it’s just evidence for the fact that I kind of drifted off in other directions and was doing lots of other music.

“It was never music that was intended to become a mainstream chart-bound pop music,” he says of the electronica and dub music he released as International Observer. “And I was very happy doing that.”

The Thompson Twins' Alannah Currie, left, and Tom Bailey perform during the Live Aid concert for famine relief at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, Pa. July 13, 1985. Tom Bailey and the current lineup of Thompson Twins will co-headline the Totally Tubular Festival with Thomas Dolby and a lineup that includes Modern English, Bow Wow Wow, the Romantics, Tommy Tutone, and the Plimsoul's Eddie Ortiz. The tour plays the YouTube Theatre in Inglewood on Saturday, June 29, 2024, and Bailey and Dolby play a separate show at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Bailey says he’d more or less concluded he would never return to the music of Thompson Twins, which had hits with songs such as “In The Name of Love,” “Lies,” “Hold Me Now,” and “Doctor! Doctor!”

Bailey says he’d more or less concluded he would never return to the music of the Thompson Twins, which with the classic lineup of Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway, had hits with songs such as “In The Name of Love,” “Lies,” “Hold Me Now,” and “Doctor! Doctor!”

“But what happened was someone seduced me into helping them make a pop song and I enjoyed it so much,” Bailey says. “I realized it reminded me of those particular skills that are required for making good pop music that I’d developed and honed a little bit back in the ’80s.

“Like, wow, you know? That’s a muscle that I haven’t used for a while, and yet I’m enjoying it now,” he says. “Why don’t I do more? And the next thing you know someone called me up and said, ‘Do you want to tour?’ Yeah, why not? So without a band, without a manager, without any ideas, I started thinking about what songs to play, and, of course, the Thompson Twins hits more or less made a setlist on their own, you know?

That was 2014 and since then Tom Bailey’s Thompson Twins, as the band is formally known, have played regularly, with a few songs off Bailey’s 2018 solo debut “Science Fiction” also in the mix.

Bailey and his current Thompson Twins band return to Southern California as co-headliners with Thomas Dolby of the Totally Tubular Festival on Saturday, June 29 at the YouTube Theatre in Inglewood. Also on the lineup are British and American new wave bands including Modern English , Men Without Hats, the Romantics, Bow Wow Wow, Tommy Tutone and The Plimsouls’ Eddie Munoz.

The Two Toms, Bailey and Dolby, will also co-headline without the other bands on Tuesday, July 2 at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside.

In an interview edited for length and clarity, Bailey talked about playing his first United States tour in six years, the 40th anniversary of the Thompson Twins’ hit album “Into The Gap,” the band’s first time playing Southern California, and why his music from the ’80s still sounds so fresh today.

Q: Festival sets are typically a little shorter. It must be tough to put together a setlist to please everyone.

A: Absolutely. And these days it’s even worse because the management and the promoters look at what’s streaming in different countries, and what positions things got to. So every time you go to a different place it’s like, ‘Ah, well that song has to be included here because it was a big hit.’ In the case of Southern California, there are songs that were hits there that no one else in the world cared about.

Q: Can you think of an example of a Southern California-specific favorite?

A: Well, one is ‘Passion Planet,’ which was a big hit on KROQ back in the day, and nowhere else in the world. A more general example is ‘If You Were Here,’ which was never released as a single but was massive in the States because it was in the film ‘Sixteen Candles.’ But if I play that in some countries they say, ‘What’s that song? I’ve never heard it before.’ It just goes to show that culture is not homogenized across the world yet.

Q: The bands on this tour got famous in the late ’70s and ’80s. Did you know them back in Thompson Twins days?

A: No, nearly all of them I’ll be meeting for the first time, which is a weird thing. It doesn’t normally happen that way. The main one is Thomas Dolby, who is actually an old friend of mine. He played on my second album, and so over the years we’ve stayed in touch.

But I’ve never been on the same stage with him. That was one of the things, in fact, that made me interested in jumping on this tour. I thought, yeah, it’s a chance to get the two Toms together.

Q: What was the experience of becoming big stars on early MTV and coming to America like?

A: I mean, from a Euro perspective, getting to America is a big deal, right? And we were lucky. It doesn’t happen to all bands, and sometimes they have to forgo the pleasure. But when we realized we had a chance and excuse to come over and play in the States, we really jumped on it.

We’ve been lucky, and one of the reasons was that, I don’t know, there was something about our sound that was a little bit challenging and fresh to people looking for a slight change away from the kind of standard approach to writing pop songs.

Also, our first videos were pretty quirky. [he laughs] We weren’t trying to be cool at all, we were trying to have fun. And I think MTV saw that as a necessary ingredient in their programming. They thought, ‘Yeah, let’s have some of these kind of eccentric Brits in our rotation as well. So we almost accidentally got a foot in the door there.

Q: And people could see you and Alannah and Joe were different than a lot of bands.

A: We weren’t the standard four White guys with guitars, you know. We slightly broke the mold of what a pop group could be, and so that in itself was visually interesting. Of course, that was not an intention. It was just an accident. We didn’t put a band together thinking what we needed here is a kind of pansexual, pan-racial mix. It just happened that way because we were friends.

Q: Do you remember the first time you guys came to play in Southern California?

A: Yes, I remember we played at the Roxy in Los Angeles. It was a fairly small little club on Sunset Boulevard, but famous because I’d seen albums with ‘Live at the Roxy’ written on the title. So I thought, ‘This is it. This is the big time, folks.’ And I remember we drove over the Rockies to get to California, and our bus broke down in the snow. It was a good old adventure.

Q: Earlier this year you were touring in the United Kingdom and Europe for the 40th anniversary of ‘Into The Gap.’ What was it like playing all that entire album again?

A: I have to say I’m lucky that the album is a strong record for me. You know, one always thinks, ‘Ooh, some of those tracks on side two, maybe they’re not as good as I remember them.’ But in fact, they’re all pretty powerful in their own way. And you can’t say that about every record you’re making, but ‘Into The Gap’ is this kind of small but perfect little thing, you know? It was fun to reengage with it again.

Q: A lot of your best songs still sound fresh today.

A: Well I’m glad. I mean, maybe that’s helped also by the fact that there are some new contemporary artists who are obsessed about the sounds of the ’80s. So in a way, it’s become part of the currency of a credible, modern sound as well. It was a great era, wasn’t it? So I’m not surprised that people go back and steal ideas from that, just as we were stealing from the ’70s and ’60s, no doubt.

Q: People know a lot of the hits that were on MTV, but I suspect many don’t know that the earliest version of Thompson Twins was more of a guitar-oriented post-punk band. When and why did that change to synths happen?

A: At the end of our second album, which in the U.K. was called ‘Set,’ we didn’t have enough material. And it just coincided with the fact that I managed to acquire a decent synth and drum machine. So I just said, ‘Look, guys, don’t worry, I’ll come up with something to take up time on the record.’ And I came up with ‘In The Name of Love,’ which was, in a sense, a massive discovery for me. It’s like, ‘Oh, so this is the way I want to make music.’

It remains one of the favorite groundbreaking moments because it was a big dance club hit, which we never thought about before. I didn’t know there were dance charts, and then suddenly, ‘Oh, you got to No. 1 on the American dance floor record chart.’ Amazing, amazing.

Q: When you started playing Thompson Twins songs again, was it easy? Did you have to relearn them? What did it feel like?

A: One of the things that was so powerful it was almost distracting was it took me back. I keep saying that when I listen to my old records it’s like reading an old diary. It reminds me of the ideas that I had, the people I was hanging out with, the places I was at.

GIG REVIEW: Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey at the IndigO2

Posted on May 18 by mrmonstagigz

By Neil Durham

WORTH A LOOK?: ****

SETLIST: In The Name Of Love; Science Fiction; Lies; Lay Your Hands On Me; Runaway; If You Were Here; Shooting Star; Psycho Killer; The Gap; Day After Day; Sister Of Mercy; No Peace For The Wicked; You Take Me Up; Who Can Stop the Rain; Doctor! Doctor!; Hold Me Now; We Are Detective; Storm On The Sea; Love On Your Side

WHEN?: Friday 17 May 2024, tour runs through 28 July 2024

We tell Bailey before this gig that the 1st concert we ever went to was the Thompson Twins at the old Hammersmith Odeon, now the Eventim Apollo, on our 14th birthday 40 years ago and he’s genuinely thrilled.

  • Read on for reasons including how this is the most comprehensive set we’ve seen Bailey give

Bailey tells a pre-gig Q&A session with 40-or-so die-hard fans here that he can’t remember the 1st gig he went to and reflects on the exciting period recording 1984’s UK number 1 Into The Gap in the Bahamas as big hit Hold Me Now was climbing the charts.

We 1st saw this incarnation of the Thompson Twins at Reading’s Sub89 in August 2014 and Bailey tells us he’s still in touch with former band members Alannah Currie, who is in New Zealand recording the audiobook of Blondie singer Deborah Harry’s memoir with her, and Joe Leeway.

Asked about a possible reunion, he says: ‘Joe and Alannah weren’t driven by the same need to make music as me. They were much more interested in visual performance and creating videos and photographs.’

According to setlist.fm , Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey played just 10 songs at that debut Reading gig and 9 of those are included here.

But tonight’s set goes as far back as 1982’s Runaway , incorporates a cover of a Talking Heads song that might be considered an inspiration and moves forward to include 2 tracks from Bailey’s 2018 solo album Science Fiction.

On the Into the Gap tour when we saw them 40 years ago the 13-song set included 9 tracks featured here and we wonder whether gigs were just shorter then?

This is definitely the most comprehensive set we’ve seen the band give and includes all of the 9 tracks from the classic Into The Gap album played in a different order to the tracklisting and we wonder also exactly when LPs became longer – and longer?

We do miss the input of side kicks Currie and Leeway and were heartened to hear in the Q&A that the 3 are still in touch and we’d love to see a gig where all 3 featured.

In the Q&A Bailey hints at the possibility of a new solo record and with a back catalogue like his we’d always be happy to see him live with new songs incorporated into a greatest hits set.

The tour runs through 28 July 2024 and also includes gigs across the UK as well as in the US and Canada so don’t miss your chance to get into the gap.

Golden state warriors | nba draft: bay area thompson twins make history as nos. 4 and 5 selections to houston, detroit, amen and ausar thompson, who got their start as youth players in oakland, are first top 10 twins in nba draft history.

Ausar Thompson (right) congratulates twin brother Amen Thompson after he was taken No. 4 in the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Thompson twins, who started playing basketball in Oakland and were home schooled before moving to Florida and playing at Atlanta-based Overtime Elite in hopes of becoming NBA players, were Nos. 4 and 5 selections as announced by Commissioner Adam Silver at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Houston Rockets selected Amen at No. 4, and no sooner did the family finish with ABC/ESPN television interviews, the Detroit Pistons selected Ausar at No. 5.

“I’m super excited,” Ausar said during his television interview. “I’ve never seen anything like this. It feels like making history with Amen.”

Another player with local ties, wing Brandin Podziemski of Santa Clara, stayed in the area as the No. 19 pick in the first round by the Warriors.

Omari Moore, the San Jose State guard who was the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, did not get drafted with one of the 58 picks. But shortly after the draft, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Moore is signing with the Milwaukee Bucks and will be a two-way player.

San Jose State's Omari Moore has agreed on a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, his agent Derek Malloy of @LIFTSPORTSMNGMT tells ESPN. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 23, 2023

Twins have been selected in the first round of the draft before, but never this high. In 2011, Markeiff Morris went No. 13 to the Phoenix Suns and Marcus No. 14 to the Rockets. Both played at Kansas.

In 2008, Stanford post Brook Lopez was taken at No. 10 by the New Jersey Nets, with Robin, also of Stanford, going at No. 15 to Phoenix.

Stanford forward Brook Lopez (11) and his twin brother, center Robin Lopez (42) congratulate each other after Stanford defeated Southern California 65-50 during their NCAA basketball game in Stanford, Calif., Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007.

The Thompson twins have similar if not identical skills and perhaps not surprisingly will have similar environments for their rookie seasons.

Amen joins a Houston team that was 22-60 last season and has a new coach in Ime Udoka. The Pistons also have a new coach in Monty Williams, who was hired after being fired in Phoenix. Detroit was 17-65 last season.

With the Rockets, Amen (6-foot-6, 214 pounds) has point guard skills and will be looked to for floor leadership.

“Amen Thompson is a long-armed, freaky athlete,” ESPN analyst Jay Bilas said. “A driver, playmaker and a good passer. He’s not a great shooter, but with that sort of athleticism if he can be consistent and be able to make shots it’s going to open things up for him. He’s just a fabulous athlete.”

Amen Thompson is looking forward to showing off those skills.

“Being in the NBA, playing with these athletic guys, I feel like my best friend in basketball is running, and we’re a young team, so that’s what we’re going to do,” he said.

Asked how he would celebrate, Amen went back to his California roots.

“I don’t know, we need to fly some In some In-N-Out to New York, that would be good,” Amen said.

Ausar Thompson, who has a 7-foot wingspan that’s an inch longer than Amen, translates more as a wing. He’s 6-foot-6 and 218 pounds.

A message from the man himself! 🗣️ pic.twitter.com/6AOVyOkru7 — Houston Rockets (@HoustonRockets) June 23, 2023

Both players were urged to have well-rounded games at a young age, and they arrive with advanced skill sets in areas other than shooting. Bishop O’Dowd High coach Lou Richie trained the twins as 11- and 12-year-olds.

An older brother, Troy Thompson Jr., played in college at Prairie View A&M and helped form the blueprint for his younger brothers.

“I think they can fit into any system, because they’re used to not being catered to,” Richie said. “I think they’re going to be realistic about their abilities,” Richie said. “They’re humble, hardworking kids.”

Neither player is considered a particularly strong shooter.

“Ausar is an outstanding defender,” Bilas said. “We’re talking about an elite NBA athlete. He improved (his shooting) toward the end of the season, and he’s a really good cutter. Where I think he can stand out is as an elite defender.”

Ausar's ready to work 🤝 pic.twitter.com/RzCTawPzKn — Detroit Pistons (@DetroitPistons) June 23, 2023

The twins moved to Ft. Lauderdale in the eighth grade and where they won a Florida state high school championship as juniors at Pine Crest School. They were five-star recruits, but bypassed scholarship offers to play at Overtime Elite.

Overtime Elite, often referred to as OTE, is a professional league for 16-20 year-olds who want to pursue a basketball career outside of the traditional high school-to-college route.

The decision to bypass college for a more specialized route to the NBA paid off big for the Thompsons, with Amen scheduled to make $40 million over four years and Ausar $36 million over the same span.

The twins’ father Troy, who helped navigate their careers, is expecting a lot.

“The vision now is to become leaders on their teams, be at least first-team all-rookie and maybe compete for rookie of the year,” Troy Thompson said. “We’ve got big ambitions.”

Kevin Ollie, a former Overtime Elite director of head coaching and basketball development, is putting no limits on the Thompson twins. Ollie is now an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets.

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Davis Thompson is primed and ready

DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 30: Davis Thompson of the United States watches his shot from the ninth tee during the final round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club on June 30, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

We told you we all actually had a chance to win last week with no Scottie Scheffler in the field, and we were damn close to being right. Our experts had Davis Thompson and Min Woo Lee, two of the runners-up, as well as Cameron Young, who let one slip away. Unfortunately, nobody had Cam Davis, who hadn't posted a top 10 since October.

But at least we were on the right track. And now we have another Scottie-less field at the John Deere Classic. Another prime opportunity to cash a ticket. Oh, right, also another prime opportunity for a breakthrough winner on the PGA Tour. We have some candidates.

Our betting panel is comprised of a caddie reporting anonymously from the grounds of TPC Deere Run, Pat Mayo of Underdog/Mayo Media Network, Brandon Gdula of numberFire/FanDuel, Andy Lack of RunPureSports.com, your two authors and Keith Stewart, the CEO of Read The Line. Stewart, our newest member of the panel, is our new betting content partner as well.

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Our Experts’ Outright Predictions

Anonymous Caddie Picker of the week : Sungjae Im (14-1, BetMGM) — The class of these players—Sungjae is strutting around with confidence again, which is a dangerous thing for the rest of the field. If he’s figured out his wedges, he might run away with this tournament.

Pat Mayo, Underdog/Fantasy National, Mayo Media Network analyst : Sungjae Im (14-1, BetMGM) — Like caddie said, the clear class of this field who also happens to be playing some really strong golf as of late, with five top-12 finishes in his last seven starts.

Brandon Gdula, FanDuel/numberFire managing editor : Sepp Straka (16-1, FanDuel) — Straka has the accuracy and tee-to-green game to play TPC Deere Run well, so it’s not a surprise that he won here last year. He enters with positive strokes-gained/approach in eight straight events and ranks sixth among the field in that stat over the last 50 rounds, per datagolf. The form and fit are there.

Keith Stewart, Read The Line: Sungjae Im (14-1, BetMGM) — At the start of the week, Sungjae Im was listed in the low 20s for betting odds at the John Deere Classic. He was my Monday target in the Odds Drop weekly article . Suddenly, Patrick Cantlay withdrew, and the betting board quickly realigned to have Im become the betting favorite. With four top-10 results in his last six starts, Sungjae is playing some impressive golf on non-major championship courses. TPC Deere Run is not a U.S. Open venue and therefore sets up perfect for his recent form. No stranger to scoring, Im has won in a birdie-fest before and is ranked top five in the field for strokes-gained/tee-to-green.

Watch the below video for our favorite bets and players we're fading for the 2024 John Deere Classic:

Stephen Hennessey, Golf Digest dep. managing editor : Davis Thompson (25-1, BetRivers) — It almost backfired last week with Akshay Bhatia—taking your chip off the roulette wheel when your guy is playing great, and he almost wins, is nightmare fuel. The Loop boys were all on Bhatia at TPC River Highlands, then he should’ve won last week. We got away with it. I won’t make the mistake with Davis Thompson here, who we sweated out to a T-2 finish. TPC Deere Run is another scoring fest, though you do have more trouble off the tee and around the greens. But DT’s in the top 20 in this field in SG/approach, SG/around the greens and birdie or better percentage. Not overthinking it.

Christopher Powers, Golf Digest senior writer : Maverick McNealy (28-1, DraftKings) — There is nothing I love more than a guy everybody was on last week and is now off because of a middling performance. McNealy fits that mold, having entered the Rocket Mortgage off a top 10 at the RBC Canadian Open but then finishing outside the top 40 in Detroit. I expect him to sharpen up those irons again and gain with the putter, as he always does. That’s the recipe that’s helped him finish inside the top 20 in back-to-back starts at the JDC. Let’s see if he can cook up a maiden victory this week.

Andy Lack, Run Pure Sports and Inside Golf podcast : Davis Thompson (25-1, DraftKings) — Coming off back-to-back top-10s at the U.S. Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic, Davis Thompson is playing some excellent golf at the moment, and he’s doing it a wide variety of golf courses. Thompson gained over 3.5 strokes in both ball-striking categories last week, and he feels primed as ever for the inevitable breakthrough.

Past results: The boys another bagged a major (!), and once again it was our anonymous caddie and Christopher Powers who cashed in. CP and our caddie have both hit the last two majors, Xander Schauffele at the PGA Championship (14-1) and Bryson DeChambeau at the U.S. Open (20-1). Our caddie now has four winners on the year, which leads the way. Pat Mayo has two while Stephen Hennessey has one (Akshay Bhatia at the Valero, 65-1).

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Sleepers/Dark Horses Who Could Win

Caddie: Brendon Todd (125-1, FanDuel) — I’m surprised you can catch this short-course savant at such a high price. He was runner-up here last year, and even though the results haven’t been there this year, Todd has a knack for showing up out of nowhere at courses he should contend on.

Mayo : Joel Dahmen (80-1, Bet365) — Dahmen has made five consecutive cuts and finally got two good results in his last two starts, consecutive top-25 finishes at the RBC Canadian Open and the Rocket Mortgage. He's live this week at TPC Deere Run, where he finished runner-up back in 2018.

Gdula: Mark Hubbard (60-1, FanDuel) — Hubbard hasn’t flirted with the top of the leaderboard in a while now but comes in at a good price in a field like this one. He’s finished T-6 and T-13 here the last two years and sets up as a strong course fit based on the emphasis on fairways and Bentgrass putting.

Stewart: Sam Stevens (50-1, DraftKings) — Sam Stevens is going to overpower this golf course. An incredible driver of the golf ball, put Stevens in a scoring situation and he thrives. Sam was 15-under par through three rounds at the Rocket Mortgage. His putter is the secret to why he scores so well. Length off the tee sets him up with wedge in hand or on the green in two when it comes to the par 5s. From there he gains with that flat stick. The approach game could be stronger but let’s face it -- no 50-1 player is perfect. The celling is high, and he has shown it on weaker layouts where the driver gives you an incredible advantage.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Luke Clanton (45-1, DraftKings) — I fired this in on Monday, and I’ll endorse the 45-1 still standing. It’s only two tournaments, but he’s been stellar—excellent enough to rank first in SG/total in this field, per RickRunGood.com. He’s the longest hitter in this field, averaging over 315 yards off the tee, and also the most accurate (again, small sample size). I think the talent is there for him to do what Ludvig Aberg almost did at TPC Deere Run last year.

Powers, Golf Digest: Eric Cole (50-1, DraftKings) — Cole finally snapped out of a mid-season slump with a top 10 at Detroit Golf Club, where he gained in every major strokes-gained category. He performed best with his irons, an area of his game that completely went bye bye after the PGA Tour’s Florida Swing ended. Now that he’s got those back, he might just return to his top-10 machine ways. We’re going for the dub, though.

Lack: Seamus Power (80-1, DraftKings) — Seamus Power always seems to raise his baseline on easier golf courses that emphasize wedge play and putting. Power has recorded four top-25 finishes in five appearances at the John Deere, including an eighth and a 13th in his last two appearances. Coming off a 20th at the Travelers where he gained strokes in all four major categories, I expect Power to make some noise in the Quad Cities once again.

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Players We’re Fading

Caddie: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — As a golf fan, I’m rooting for Jordy to figure his game out at a course that he’s excelled at in the past. In reality, he hasn’t looked close to himself. This is likely just a tune-up for the next two weeks.

Mayo: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — A 2017 Spieth price for the 2024 version of Spieth. No thanks.

Gdula: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — Spieth’s two wins at TPC Deere Run have come about a decade ago, and the form now for him is vastly different than it was then. Even the bentgrass putting is weak right now, so I’d rather go with other names at the top of the board.

Stewart: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — Across his last five starts, Jordan Spieth is losing strokes to the field. What was just an approach issue has leaked significantly into the putter. Spieth has lost strokes putting in five of his last seven starts. The irons have failed him in six of his last eight events. That’s why Jordan is here. The two-time JDC winner has not been to the Quad Cities since 2015. Spieth is 59th in FedEx Cup points and needs a lift. I understand the start, but unfortunately cannot back the motivation.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — It might reach a point where hundreds, not just dozens, of other pundits are writing the same thing this week. It’s tough to justify this price tag. Spieth is ranked 43rd in my custom model at RickRunGood.com this week. Fading Spieth is an easy conclusion to come to.

Powers, Golf Digest: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — Just one top-10 finish for Jordy since early February. He just doesn’t have it right now, and that was never more apparent at the Travelers, an event he’s won in the past. Yet he lost nearly nine strokes tee-to-green this year. Who is the sicko that is entertaining him at 20-1 right now? Show yourself.

Lack: Jordan Spieth (20-1, FanDuel) — I understand that Jordan Spieth is the biggest “name” in this field, but he’s certainly not playing like it. Spieth has finished top 10 in one event since prior to the Masters, and it appears to be getting worse before it gets better. Spieth is coming off a 61st at the Travelers where he lost five strokes ball-striking, and neither his short game nor his putting has been up to snuff either.

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Matchups

Caddie: Sungjae Im (-120) over Sepp Straka (DraftKings) — Straka’s playing solid golf, but don’t underestimate the stresses of being a defending champ. Sungjae has none of that and is playing better.

Mayo: Denny McCarthy (-134, three-way) over Keith Mitchell (Bet365) — Denny's putter remains as hot as ever and he finally, for the first time in seven events, gained strokes with his irons in his last start at Travelers. When he does that, he's always a threat.

Gdula: Lucas Glover (-120) over Eric Cole (FanDuel) — There’s a massive tee-to-green gap between Glover and Cole, and Glover has played TPC Deere Run well in the past, including a win in 2021.

Stewart: Lee Hodges (-115) over Doug Ghim (DraftKings) — Lee Hodges’ iron play has been impressive in recent weeks. Hodges is gaining nearly three strokes per start over his last five events with his approach play. A missed cut at the Rocket Mortgage came from an off first round. Lee is still top 10 on approach and tee-to-green heading into the John Deere. Doug Ghim struggles to score because of a lackluster putter. The failing flat stick continues to put pressure on other parts of his game. Four missed cuts in his last seven starts and this bet might cash before the weekend even begins.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Ben Griffin (-115) over Eric Cole (DraftKings) — Cole had a nice week last week, but if you look at a longer sample size, Griffin has a clear edge on Cole. You’d think Cole would be a great fit at a wedge and putter fest, but Griffin outpaces him in all the strokes-gained categories and has a 78-percent chance to win this matchup, per RickRunGood.com, over a 24-round sample size.

Powers, Golf Digest: Brendon Todd (+100) over Andrew Novak (DraftKings) — Novak has been sneaky solid in his last two starts, though last week his putter did some very heavy lifting en route to a top-20 finish, his second in a row. I’ll take the horse for the course in Todd, who only has so many events in a season where he feels like he can really hang. This is one of them.

Lack: Adam Svensson (-110) over Jason Day (DraftKings) — This is more of a fade on Jason Day than anything else, as Day has now lost strokes in both ball-striking categories in four straight starts. Adam Svensson is playing some strong golf in his own right and has recorded a top-25 finish in all three of his appearances at TPC Deere Run.

Matchup Results from the Rocket Mortgage Classic: Lack: 1 for 1 (McNealy (-110) over Noren); Mayo: 1 for 1 (M.W. Lee (+125) over T. Kim); Caddie: 1 for 1 (M.W. Lee (+125) over T. Kim); Hennessey: 1 for 1 (M.W. Lee (+125) over T. Kim) ; Gdula: 1 for 1 (Griffin (-110) over Fox); Powers: 0 for 1; Stewart: 0 for 1

Matchup Results from this season (Wins-Losses-Pushes): Lack 18-7-1 (up 8.82 units); Mayo: 16-9-1 (up 6.86 units); Caddie: 16-9-0 (up 5.3 units); Hennessey: 13-9-4 (up 3.01 units); Gdula: 14-10-2 (up 2.35 units); Powers: 12-11-2 (up 0.82 units); Stewart: 12-13-1 (down 2.21 units)

John Deere Classic picks 2024: Top 10s

Caddie: Lucas Glover (+400, DraftKings) — There are few better fits for Glover on the schedule, and he’s coming in with his approach game figured out, which should translate well for TPC Deere Run.

Mayo: Seamus Power (+490, Bet365) — Power has been on quite the jekyll and hyde run, going 12th-MC-16th-MC-27th-MC-20th in his last seven starts. While he seemingly hasn't been able to put back-to-back weeks together, I'm betting that he does this week at JDC, where he's finished 13th and eighth in his last two trips.

Gdula: Maverick McNealy (+300, FanDuel) — McNealy has made all three cuts at TPC Deere Run in his career and has finished T-18 and T-8 in his two most recent starts while putting extremely well in each. His irons are a little lacking, but the rest of the game is great right now.

Stewart: Maverick McNealy (+300, FanDuel) — We loved him last week and were disappointed. It happens in golf betting, but that doesn’t change the fact Maverick McNealy is playing some very solid golf. While the irons were slightly off in Detroit, Mav’s putter and driver were hot. I believe he gets the iron game locked back in on a course where he’s finished inside the top 18 in his last two trips. Ranked second in par-4 scoring and birdie-or-better percentage, that complement of skills alongside an eighth-ranked tee-to-green game makes him consider winning, but I’ll take the 10 places.

Hennessey, Golf Digest: Mark Hubbard (+550, Bet365) — Hubbard is accurate off the tee and makes birdies, ranking 20th in both categories, and is positive in the important wedge proximity buckets.

Powers, Golf Digest: Neal Shipley (+700, DraftKings) — Purely a hot-hand play. Shipley is riding a wave right now, with back-to-back low-am finishes at the Masters and U.S. Open and now a top 20 at Rocket Mortgage where he gained 5.1 strokes on approach. If not for an ice-cold putter, he may have had a legitimate chance to win last weekend.

Lack: Mark Hubbard (+550, Bet365) — Mark Hubbard has developed into one of the most consistent cut-makers on the PGA Tour, and I’m expecting a lot more than just a made cut this week at TPC Deere Run. Hubbard finished sixth at this event last year, and he has gained over 2.5 strokes on approach in his last three appearances at the Weibring design. Similar to Power, Hubbard possesses the ideal skill set of strong wedge play and Bentgrass putting that should play beautifully this week.

Top-10 results from the Rocket Mortgage Classic: Hennessey: 1 for 1 (Erik van Rooyen +600); Everybody else: 0 for 1

Top-10 results from this season: Hennessey: 9 for 26 (up 63.85 units); Mayo: 5 for 26 (down 1 units); Gdula: 5 for 26 (down 1.9 units); Caddie: 5 for 25 (down 3.05 units); Lack: 5 for 26 (down 8.55 units); Powers: 4 for 26 (down 11.1 units); Stewart: 4 for 26 (down 12.82 units)

THE LOS ANGELES LAKERS

Based on just the surface-level headlines, you would think it was a great day for the Lakers .

  • LeBron James signed a two-year, $104 million maximum deal to stay in Los Angeles and became the first player in NBA history to reach $500 million in career contract earnings .
  • It came the same day Bronny James signed a four-year, $7.9 million deal .
  • Los Angeles added former head coaches Scott Brooks and Nate McMillan to JJ Redick 's staff.

But when you dig deeper, the first and third bullet points are more reasons that this summer has been a failure for Los Angeles , Sam Quinn writes.

You may remember that James was reportedly willing to take a pay cut if it would help the Lakers add a key player. Instead, they whiffed on Klay Thompson , and  Jonas Valanciunas  and James Harden -- other players for whom James would have taken a pay cut -- who all signed elsewhere.

Now, James has all the flexibility in the world -- a no-trade clause and an option to hit free agency after this season following his long-awaited season with his son -- and the Lakers have almost none. Unless Dalton Knecht  is the rare immediate-impact outside-the-lottery rookie, the Lakers have made no upgrades to a roster that wasn't close to contending last season.

Even the Brooks and McMillan news came after a rejection from Dwane Casey . The Redick hiring, of course, came after  Dan Hurley rejected a low-ball offer .

The last few weeks have been an indictment of the franchise , Sam writes.

  • Quinn: "Through this context, it's not hard to see why people might be a bit hesitant to join the Lakers. The team is often a circus. The front office continues to escape accountability for the team's on-court failures even as coach after coach is jettisoned for them. It's not clear what exactly the on-court plan is. ... Right now, the Lakers are a Play-In team that is just getting older and worse in a conference steadily getting younger and better."

At least they're not alone, even in their own city. Bill Reiter wrote about how both the Lakers and Clippers have  fallen into mediocrity .

👎 Not so honorable mentions

  • Shohei Ohtani isn't expected to participate in the Home Run Derby.
  • The first episode of "Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants "  focused on the team letting Saquon Barkley go. Was their reasoning correct? Regardless, A.J. Brown has his new teammate's back .
  • DeMar Derozan 's market isn't great , and Sam  explained why .
  • Oft-injured Twins star Royce Lewis   strained his adductor running the bases. Minnesota promoted Brooks Lee in a corresponding move.
  • Jordan Romano (elbow surgery) will miss at least six weeks .
  • Several former USMNT players are  ready to move on from Gregg Berhalter .
  • Mario Chalmers  is  taking aim at the NCAA.
  • Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz continued their back-and-forth .

🏀 More NBA offseason winners, losers

getty-nikola-jokic-kentavious-caldwell-pope-nuggets.jpg

Los Angeles isn't the only multi-team NBA city. On the other side of the country, Brad Botkin ranked the Nets dealing Mikal Bridges to the Knicks as the best move this offseason , as it accomplishes goals for both teams. The Knicks are deeper, more versatile and simply better. The Nets got a ton of draft picks and are bottoming out ahead of what should be a loaded 2025 draft class.

As such, both teams land in the "winners" column of Brad's offseason winners and losers . Not every team was so lucky, though. While most title contenders -- Knicks included -- got better, one in particular got worse :

  • Botkin: " Loser: Denver Nuggets --   Kentavious Caldwell-Pope  was Denver's best point-of-attack defender and a perfect offensive component within the  Nikola Jokic  and  Jamal Murray  galaxy -- in which he fired 3s and cut for layups and curled off two-man actions for pull-up mid-range jumpers with attention always shifted elsewhere. ... As it looks right now, Denver will only look to replace Caldwell-Pope internally, probably by promoting  Christian Braun into the starting lineup. Braun is a nice spark-plug player. He's not KCP. Denver was already low on shooters and it just got worse."

🌭 Why Joey Chestnut won't be at hot dog eating contest

untitled-design-2024-06-11t224843-084.png

There will be a big name -- the big name -- missing from today's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sixteen-time champion  Joey Chestnut won't compete, meaning we'll have a non-Chestnut winner for the first time since 2015. Chestnut, who holds the all-time record with 76 hot dogs and buns eaten at the 2021 event, has won 16 of the last 17 contests.

Just under a month ago, Major League Eating  barred Chestnut from the competition due to his endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, which makes vegan hot dogs and competes with Nathan's.

Chestnut  detailed in an interview  that he would be open to a return in the future.

However you regard eating contests, not having the GOAT is a bummer. It's like a prime Tiger Woods missing a major ... but if there was only one major per year. In terms of competitiveness, this actually might make this year's contest  better considering how dominant Chestnut has been, but stars make competitions go 'round. This year just won't be the same.

LeBron James gets into GM mode for Lakers’ Klay Thompson recruitment

Klay Thompson was clearly on LeBron James' speed dial amid the Lakers' pursuit of the future Hall of Famer.

Jedd Pagaduan

The Los Angeles Lakers are always under pressure to deliver a championship product on the hardwood year-in, year-out. The offseason provides hope that, perhaps, the Lakers could once again find the right pieces to surround LeBron James and Anthony Davis with a championship-caliber roster. And at the start of free agency, James wasted no time trying to set things in motion amid the Lakers' pursuit of future Hall of Famer Klay Thompson .

James, as soon as the free agency clock began to tick, reportedly had Thompson on dial to try and convince him to join the Lakers amid the franchise's pursuit of banner 18, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

“I'm told LeBron James called Klay Thompson right when free agency opened [at] 6 PM Eastern,” Wojnarowski said on SportsCenter, via ClutchPoints Twitter (X).

However, Klay Thompson still isn't on the verge of making a final decision; as per Wojnarowski, he expects the process of recruiting Thompson to last until tomorrow at the very least.

“These conversations, this negotiation will go into tomorrow. There probably will not be a resolution tonight,” Wojnarowski added.

As much of a struggle as the 2023-24 season was for Klay Thompson, he remains a hot commodity on the free-agent market due to his championship experience and excellent floor-spacing capabilities. He may not be capable of being the second option on offense anymore like the Golden State Warriors needed him to be this past season, but Thompson should still be a high-level role player who commands a ton of respect on the perimeter given his body of work as a marksman.

The Lakers are also looking to add more 3 and D wings, as their roster hasn't exactly featured a high-level player of that archetype ever since Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was traded back in 2021. LeBron James has had so much success throughout his career while being flanked by shooters of a similar caliber to Thompson, so it's not too difficult to understand why James is doing whatever he could to convince the 34-year old shooting guard to join the Lakers.

Lakers are not alone in the Klay Thompson sweepstakes

thompson twins us tour

As mentioned earlier, Klay Thompson is still a sought-after player in free agency due to the hand and glove complementary nature of his game. He is a plug-and-play piece who could impact any contending team, as he could both shoot off movement actions as well as off the catch.

Joining the Lakers as Thompson's most prominent suitors are the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers. The Mavs have already made a few moves this offseason, trading for Quentin Grimes and signing Naji Marshall to be the de facto Derrick Jones Jr. replacement. However, it appears as though they're not done maneuvering quite yet. Considering how they struggled to space the floor in the NBA Finals, adding Thompson is an amazing way to solve one of their roster's most pressing shortcomings.

Meanwhile, the Clippers are in a bit of a transition phase; following another short-lived playoff run marred by injuries, Paul George has decided to take his talents elsewhere , Russell Westbrook is on the way out, and Mason Plumlee is soon to be an official member of the Phoenix Suns roster. Adding Klay Thompson gives the Clippers a sniper to replace George; but is adding a 34-year old guard really the best idea for a team that lacks athleticism and speed across multiple positions?

The Lakers, however, have LeBron James, and having a man who wields such influence could help sway Thompson's decision in the Purple and Gold's favor. Only time will tell, however, if James' recruitment works out.

Busy offseason still ahead for LeBron James and company

thompson twins us tour

The Lakers have already finished some orders of business this offseason; they brought in JJ Redick as the team's new head coach and they also re-signed Max Christie to a four-year, $32 million deal. LeBron James is also going to return in an eventual team-up with his son Bronny and he is even willing to take a pay cut if it means that the Lakers could bring in additional talent aboard.

But the Lakers should also be a busy team on the trading front. They have a few first-round picks that they can dangle in addition to the very tradeable contracts of D'Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, and Gabe Vincent, among others. If the right deal is available, perhaps even Austin Reaves or Jarred Vanderbilt could be involved, although the inclusion of Reaves is very much unlikely given how highly the Lakers rate him.

With James approaching 40 years of age, expect the Lakers to shoot for the stars this offseason.

Erin Andrews, Charissa Thompson obsessed with Kylie Kelce after ‘incredible’ moment at Taylor Swift concert

Kylie Kelce is the MVP of the “Eras Tour.”

Fox Sports veteran reporter Erin Andrews recalled having “a meltdown” after encountering former NFL star Jason Kelce’s wife in the bathroom at night one of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in London this past weekend.

During Wednesday’s episode of her and co-host Charissa Thompson’s “Calm Down” podcast, Andrews shared a story about how Kylie assisted a distressed Swiftie during the concert.

“She’s amazing. She was really, really a cool girl. I’ll also say this, an amazing mother. She saw a fan maybe that needed water right away, didn’t think twice about it,” Andrews said. “She grabbed water from the tent, threw it at the fan. I was like, this chick is incredible. Kylie, she’s amazing.”

Andrews and Thompson, both die-hard Swifties, attended the London” Eras Tour” on Friday and praised Kylie as “the MVP” of the night. Thompson even compared the mother of three to Swift herself.

“She did like what Taylor does where she’s like, someone needs help. She’s like scanning the crowd, gets water, the whole thing,” Thompson explained. “Yeah, she’s a dream.”

The Fox Sports personalities and BFFs — who jokingly take credit for matchmaking Swift and boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, last summer — enjoyed VIP treatment at the concert with their significant others: two-time Stanley Cup champion Jarret Stoll and entrepreneur Steven Cundari.

They danced and partied with the Kelce family, as shown in photos shared on social media.

“We. Made. It.,” Andrews wrote on her Instagram Story, including a video of her and Thompson jumping up and down dancing to Swift, whom she called “queen.”

On Wednesday’s episode of their podcast, the two detailed Travis’ behind-the-scenes involvement in his girlfriend’s record-breaking tour.

It was the first time Thompson, 42, had been to a Swift concert with Travis.

‘There is a picture that I took just of her on stage and he is, like, off to the side, and the way that he looks at her when [she’s] performing — I said to him, like: ‘You must be so proud.’ He was like: ‘You have no idea,” Thompson said.

Andrews also raved about the viral moment of Swift serenading Travis with her 2019 hit “Lover” as he stood in the crowd.

She praised Travis for visibly cherishing the experience of being there for his girlfriend.

“We were kinda all standing there watching it and it was awesome,” the host said. “For romantics like Charissa and I, for a guy that we cheer for on and off the field, and obviously we’re massive fans of hers, it was really cool and it was kinda like an inside look of, like, a relationship that all of us had been hoping for. But it was really, really special and he was just standing there and just taking her in.”

In August 2023, Andrews and Thompson publicly urged Swift to consider dating the Chiefs star.

“Please, try our friend Travis. He is fantastic,” Andrews said. “I know we’re not the best of friends, we’re not even friends, but I consider you one. Take us up on this. Go on a date with this guy. Do it for America.”

Swift and Travis took their relationship public in September 2023.

During an appearance on “The Tonight Show,” Andrews and Thompson playfully claimed to Jimmy Fallon they were the ones who sparked the romance.

Thompson explained that she and Andrews “were advocating early on” for Swift and Travis.

“(Travis) was very sweet and he commented [last summer] and he was like, ‘I owe you guys big time,’ so then, of course, everyone gives us credit,” Thomson said. “…We just love both of them and I’m so happy to see them happy.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also said that he’d like to “take some of the credit” for Swift and Kelce’s relationship during a separate appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

Dana Open Announces “Lexi Thompson Day” on Friday, July 19th

Lexi Thompson

The Dana Open announced that Friday’s tournament round on July 19th will be dedicated to Lexi Thompson, who recently announced her retirement from playing full time on the LPGA Tour at the end of the 2024 season.

“I’m honored that the Dana Open has chosen to recognize me on Friday of tournament week,” Thompson said after she found out about the special day. “I always love coming to Toledo to see all the amazing fans and hopefully the younger generation of golfers. What the Dana Open does with giving back to children’s charities is incredible and I just hope that by all of us ladies playing we inspire others and make a difference.”

Thompson, 29, has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour and represented the United States in six Solheim Cup Matches including 2021 at Inverness Club and 2023 in Spain.

“Lexi has meant so much to the LPGA Tour’s success and growth over the past 14 years and we felt this was the perfect time to honor her for everything she’s done for golf,” stated Dana Open tournament director Judd Silverman. “Lexi has moved women’s golf forward while inspiring kids to follow their passion and dream big. I think she’s signed just about every hat, glove, ball and flag handed to her and accepted countless requests from sponsors to make appearances on their behalf. Tournament Friday is a great time for the community to come out to the Dana Open and show Lexi how much we appreciate everything she’s done for kids and the game of golf!”

“While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time,” Thompson wrote in a statement that she released at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open in May. “At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule. I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year as there are still goals I want to accomplish. I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my life. Time with friends, family and my trusted dog Leo. I will always look for ways to contribute to the sport and inspire the next generation of golfers.”

The 40th annual Dana Open will be played July 18-21 at Highland Meadows Golf Club for a purse of $1.75 million.  For tickets visit  www.danaopen.com .

This year’s Dana Open will benefit several Toledo area children’s charities including ProMedica Russell Ebeid Children’s Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital – Toledo, Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity: Women Build, Ronald McDonald House Charities of NW Ohio, and the Jamie Farr Scholarship Fund of the Greater Toledo Community Foundation.

Draymond Green details his emotional reaction to Klay Thompson leaving Warriors

According to StatMuse , forward Draymond Green played 576 career games with shooting guard Klay Thompson during their time with the Golden State Warriors .

With Thompson set to join the Dallas Mavericks , Green recently detailed his emotional reaction when he was told that he and his longtime teammate would no longer share the court.

"I think I might have dropped a couple tears" — @Money23Green reacts to Klay Thompson going to Dallas pic.twitter.com/iI4EvYQorE — The Volume (@TheVolumeSports) July 3, 2024

Thompson was selected by the Warriors with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, joining Stephen Curry in Golden State's backcourt.

Green was picked by the Dubs in the second round in 2012 but didn't become a starter until his third season during the 2014-15 campaign.

Steve Kerr also became the Warriors head coach in 2014-15, and behind Curry's first regular-season MVP, Thompson's first All-Star honor and Green's efforts on first-team All-Defense, Golden State finished 67-15 and raced to its first NBA title in 40 years.

The trio were each All-Stars in 2015-16, Curry won his second straight regular-season MVP and Green was the Defensive Player of the Year runner-up for the second consecutive year.

Despite finishing with an NBA record of 73 wins in the regular season and holding a 3-1 series edge over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Warriors fell to the Cavs in a seven-game NBA Finals instant classic.

The group won two more championships in 2017 and 2018, with each making All-Star teams in both years and Green winning the 2016-17 Defensive Player of the Year Award, before they lost to the Toronto Raptors in the 2019 NBA Finals.

Thompson missed the entire 2019-2020 and 2020-21 campaigns and Curry was out for all but five games in the former season, leading to down years.

With all three superstars back together and healthy, the Warriors won one more title in 2022 against the Boston Celtics.

It might be a long time before any trio of teammates have the kind of success that Curry, Green and Thompson had together in the Bay Area.
