Move over Kirk -- Christopher Pike is the captain now. In "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a spinoff of " Star Trek: Discovery " and prequel to " Star Trek: The Original Series ," "Star Trek" fans are getting a glimpse of the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is streaming exclusively on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

When one of Captain Pike's officers goes missing during a secret mission for Starfleet, Pike is forced to emerge from his self-imposed exile.

While on a survey mission, the U.S.S. Enterprise discovers a comet is going to strike an inhabited planet. They try to re-route the comet, only to find that an ancient alien relic buried on the comet's icy surface is somehow stopping them.

The U.S.S. Enterprise encounters a contagion that ravages the ship. One by one, the entire crew is incapacitated except for Number One, Una Chin-Riley, who must now confront a secret she's been hiding as she races to find a cure.

While on a routine supply mission to a colony planet, the U.S.S. Enterprise comes under an attack from an unknown malevolent force. Pike brings all his heart and experience to bear in facing the crisis, but the security officer warns him that the enemy cannot be dealt with by conventional Starfleet means.

It's a comedy of manners when Spock has a personal visit in the middle of Spock and Captain Pike's crucial negotiations with an unusual alien species.

A threat to an idyllic planet reunites Captain Pike with the lost love of his life. To protect her and a scientific holy child from a conspiracy, Pike offers his help and is forced to face unresolved feelings of his past.

The Starfleet is back to boldly go where no one has gone before. This time, the USS Enterprise is under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) in Star Trek : Strange New Worlds , which premieres Thursday on Paramount+ .

Now renewed for a third season right after its Season 2 finale, here's everything we know so far about the next chapter in the epic space adventure.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window was from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

The series was originally set to film early in 2023 but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the series was delayed by several months. Thankfully, they recently wrapped up filming in Canada earlier this year. Anson Mount took to Instagram to celebrate the conclusion of filming.

Mount also wrote a heartfelt message to fans after concluding production, saying:

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on season 3, at least from me, there’s still a little bit of work to be done. I feel like I could sleep for a week, but I still have many travels and many things ahead of me to do, and I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shots here. Thank you for your patience, especially during the strikes, it wasn’t anyone’s intention for us to be delayed to that extent. Thank you for sticking with us, thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans, I am one of you and it’s because of people like you that I get to live out my dreams like this and I’ll never stop thanking you for having me in your house.”

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again.

To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

There are still many more stories to be told and strange new worlds to explore. In a surprise to no one, Paramount+ has already renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fourth season. Mount took to Instagram , saying:

"We’ll see you again in the spring when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes back into production for Season 4!"

Strange New Worlds Season 2 Is a Big Middle Finger to AI

Amid the ongoing writers strike, leave it to this sci-fi standout to remind us that computers don't make great television—people do.

As I watched Season Two of Strange New Worlds against this backdrop, I couldn’t stop thinking about the series as an outstanding feat not just of filmmaking, but of writing . Like Season One before it, the newest season of Strange New Worlds , which premieres its first episode today, nimbly straddles a challenging tightrope. For non- Trek fans, it delivers exhilarating episodic science fiction, while for dyed-in-the-wool Trekkies, it functions as a prequel that informs and enlarges the canon of Star Trek: The Original Series . These ten episodes has different thematic concerns than the previous batch, but it’s every bit as focused on propelling the lore forward, to terrific success.

If you thought Season One tied a tidy bow on Captain Pike’s future, then you thought wrong. Season Two continues to plumb his canonical backstory for new insights; in one riveting episode, he returns to Rigel VII, the site of an ill-fated away mission imported straight from The Original Series . Meanwhile, a remixed version of “The City on the Edge of Forever,” centered on Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk and Christina Chong’s La’an Noonien-Singh, somehow both subverts and pays homage to what’s arguably the best and most famous Star Trek episode of all time. Season Two also delivers on familiar Star Trek episodic conceits, like a classic courtroom drama that teases a famous Original Series court martial yet to come. All told, Strange New Worlds is a labor of love by writers who live and breathe Star Trek , sure, but also just get what it is: a way of using the future to tell gripping stories about who we are now.

Of course, it takes more than great writers to make great television. Strange New Worlds is firing on all nacelles this season—it’s turbocharging what worked about Season One, while also giving viewers more of what they want. As with Season One, the series remains committed to rifling through genres; this time out of space dock, it delivers horror, comedy, romance, and so much more. In one standout episode, the spiritual sequel to Season One’s Vulcan body swap caper , another cosmic mishap finds Spock in uncomfortably close contact with his human side—a comedy of manners and deception played to great comedic effect by Ethan Peck and Anson Mount . Meanwhile, cast members like Celia Rose Gooding and Melissa Navia finally get to anchor their own episodes, as Season Two sheds its predecessor’s focus on Captain Pike to become a true ensemble series. Ensemble shows can’t have weak links, and the Strange New Worlds ensemble (newly joined by Carol Kane as a kooky chief engineer with fascinating secrets) is a deep bench of gifted actors.

But about that writer’s strike: also among the guild’s concerns is the matter of artificial intelligence. Concerned that studios will use AI to generate source material, punch up existing scripts, or outright draft screenplays, the Writers Guild is seeking regulations around how and when AI can be used. When it comes to Star Trek , the irony here is rather rich—after all, Star Trek characters have been bedeviled by rogue AI since the franchise debuted in 1967, from malevolent supercomputers to hostile cybernetics to android doppelgangers. Star Trek has no unified theory of artificial intelligence (in fact, The Next Generation ’s enduring questions about an android commander’s sentience and soulfulness make for some of the franchise’s best viewing), but it’s certainly never shied away from telling cautionary tales about automation.

Could AI consume six decades of Star Trek lore and come back with anything remotely resembling this stellar season of Strange New Worlds ? In the absence of The Original Series AI baddies like Landru and Vaal, I asked ChatGPT to do the honors. The app generated a Strange New Worlds teleplay called “The Vortex of Time,” in which a temporal anomaly threatens to shatter the space-time continuum (where have I heard that one before?). Captain Pike orders his crew around like a wooden actor in a management training video until Spock, Number One, and “Lieutenant Connolly” trace the problem to a research station, stabilize its malfunctioning temporal core, and save the galaxy (all in a day’s work for Starfleet’s finest). ChatGPT gamely mimics Starfleet’s militarized patter, but ultimately, all it can generate is a serviceable Star Trek conceit. The layer of depth that makes Star Trek sing—its thoughtful attention to what these outer space dust-ups signify about our culture, our morality, and our humanity—is utterly absent here. Sure, ChatGPT can string together a rudimentary plot, but it can’t tell stories with soul.

If there’s one thing any Star Trek fan knows, it’s that even the smartest computers in the galaxy are ultimately just window dressing. They perform complex calculations, beam officers from place to place, and make bridge consoles go “beep boop.” At the end of the day, it’s the people that make the starships soar. Hollywood studios would do well to recognize it.
