The 10 Best International Found Footage Movies, Ranked

Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your significant other, your friends, or even by yourself, you’ll want a good movie to watch. Why not time travel and indulge in some historical romance?

RELATED: Movies Like West Side Story to Watch for More Emotional Romances

Movies like Titanic and The Notebook are some good choices, or maybe even a good rom-com like The Proposal or Never Been Kissed. While the films in this list are a little less iconic, they will still bring the romance and most importantly, transport you to a different time and place.

'Far and Away' (1992)

Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman while they were still married, Far and Away follows Joseph and Shannon, two Irish immigrants who form an unlikely friendship and eventual relationship as they travel to the United States in search of land in the Land Run of 1893.

The characters’ constant bickering and frustration are funny and endearing as they gradually develop and reveal their feelings. Pretending to be siblings also creates a fun tension as romance grows. The film was not well-received by critics and had mixed audience reviews, but its somewhat cheesy, predictable plotline is perfect for a Valentine’s Day movie night.

'Tristan & Isolde' (2006)

Inspired by a medieval legend and set in the Dark Ages, Tristan & Isolde tells the story of a Cornish warrior and an Irish princess who have a secret love affair while their two countries are at war. The film received mixed reviews for its simplicity, but it still offers the romantic tension of star-crossed lovers, in addition to beautiful cinematography. The Dark Ages don’t seem like a romantic era, but James Franco and Sophia Myles do a great job of bringing audiences into their legendary love story.

'One Day' (2011)

Based on a novel of the same name, One Day follows two friends, Dexter and Emma, on the same day from 1988 to 2006. Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess , the film had mixed reviews due to its lengthy storyline and the accuracy of the actors’ accents. However, the story has remained popular and is being remade into a series acquired by Netflix .

RELATED: Shows Like Downton Abbey to Watch Next

Despite all of this, One Day gives an interesting look into how a person’s life can change year to year and how our lives intertwine with others, especially those we love. Even though the film is set in recent history, the passage of time on a single day provides a unique twist for a romantic film.

'The Last Letter From Your Lover' (2021)

Also based on a novel of the same name, The Last Letter From Your Lover recounts the story of two long-lost lovers who write letters to each other in the 1960s, while a present-day journalist finds the letters and tries to find out their identities and reunite them.

Starring Shailene Woodley and Felicity Jones , the film’s structure has similarities to The Notebook but is set apart by acts of deception and ultimate separation. The film did not perform too well on Netflix, but its cinematography and overall concept make it worth watching.

'The Age of Adaline' (2015)

Starring Blake Lively , The Age of Adaline tells the story of Adaline, a woman who miraculously stopped aging when she was 29 years old in 1937. She has continually assumed new identities, but when she falls in love with a man in the present day, she must choose whether or not to keep running.

The cinematography, costumes, hair, and makeup greatly aid the audience's journey into Adaline's life over the last century . The film received modest reviews, and critics praised Blake Lively and Harrison Ford’s performances. Unexpected reveals and fantastical elements put an interesting spin on this film while also making viewers question their morality.

'Romeo and Juliet' (2013)

While Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptations of the iconic Shakespeare story are classics in their own right, Carlo Carlei’s Romeo and Juliet is a bit underrated. While it received mixed reviews because of its additions and omissions to the script, this adaptation offers a fresh take on the story for a new generation while still being set in fair Verona.

RELATED: Shows Like Outlander to Watch Next for More Historical Romance

Led by Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld , the cast also includes Damian Lewis , Stellan Skarsgård , and Paul Giamatti . The film was beautifully shot on location in Verona and is a worthy addition to the Romeo and Juliet catalog.

'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' (2008)

Loosely based on a 1922 short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald , The Curious Case of Benjamin Button follows the life of a man who ages backward. The film had been in development for decades but finally came to fruition in 2008. Starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett , this film received rave reviews and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, winning three for Best Art Direction, Makeup, and Visual Effects.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button does an amazing job of transporting viewers throughout multiple decades, from 1918 to 2005. This film inspires viewers to live a life of adventure and love without fear, and it's a great choice for anyone who wants a glimpse of life and romance in different eras.

'Legends of the Fall' (1994)

Also starring Brad Pitt, Legends of the Fall is based on a 1979 novella of the same name by Jim Harrison . The film chronicles the lives of three brothers and their father in the Montana plains during the first quarter of the 20th century. The film is an epic drama with sweeping landscapes and intense love and loss, but this caused mixed reviews among viewers who lost the story along the way.

Nevertheless, the film was a box office success and pushed Brad Pitt into even bigger superstardom. The storyline is heartbreaking, but its heavy romantic elements make it a viable Valentine’s Day option.

'Flipped' (2010)

Flipped is a wonderful, light-hearted story for the whole family. Based on a novel of the same name by Wendelin Van Draanen and directed by Rob Reiner , this story is set in the 1950s and follows eighth-graders Bryce and Julie, who independently develop feelings for each other.

The film has a simple storyline, but the focus on intergenerational relationships, the effects of understanding one another, and the overall concept of the tweens’ flipped affections are incredibly heartwarming. Flipped had a lukewarm response, but its charm and quaint setting bring viewers back to how it felt to be in love for the first time.

'Midnight in Paris' (2011)

Written and directed by Woody Allen , Midnight in Paris follows a screenwriter who has to reevaluate his whole life after transporting back in time to 1920s Paris. Led by Owen Wilson and a cast of countless other well-known actors, the film was shot on location in France and is breathtakingly beautiful.

The film received critical acclaim; it was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Picture and won for Best Original Screenplay. If viewers want to experience the Roaring 20s and have a romantic adventure, Midnight in Paris is the perfect film for a Valentine’s Day movie night.

The Greatest Time-Travel Romances of All Time

Charlie Jane Anders

The greatest romances face the test of time — but what happens when two lovers are adrift in time and space? About Time is just the latest in a long line of time-travel love stories, and tales of time-crossed lovers. Here are the greatest time-travel romances of all timelines.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Teenage love is a tricky thing, and in the 2006 adaptation of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Makoto messes it up over and over again. After she discovers that she can literally leap through time, Makoto uses her power to play cupid not only with her friends, but with her own love life. She learns that relationships are complicated, even when you can arrange it so that certain conversations never happened. This beautiful anime film expands on the stories told in other adaptations of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s novel. Makoto’s aunt in the film is the protagonist of the original novel, and we see some of the ramifications of her own time traveling romance.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Throughout The time Traveler’s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger compares her main characters’ relationship to that between a sailor and his wife. The description is apt as we see Henry and Clare torn apart again and again, never knowing if the storms of life will keep them apart forever. Henry suffers from a genetic condition similar to epilepsy, but instead of having seizures he travels through time. He and Clare struggle to lead normal lives despite his frequent disappearances. In 2009 Robert Schwentke adapted this into a film starring Rachel McAdams, the actress most type-cast as a time traveler’s love interest .

Just after World War II, British army nurse Claire Randall is vacationing with her husband in Scotland when she stumbles through a group of standing stones into the year 1743. She wins the trust of a clan of Scotsmen after using her medical knowledge to relocate the arm of Jamie MacKenzie. One thing leads to another and Claire ends up being forced to marry Jamie, breaking her marriage vows to her husband in the future. The situation becomes further complicated when Claire realizes she is falling in love with Jamie. She must choose between trying to find a way back to her present and her husband, or staying with the man she now believes to be the love of her life. This sexy tale has gripped readers for over a decade. The eighth book in the series will be released in March 2014, and Ronald D. Moore is producing a television series based on the books set to come out in Spring 2014.

Somewhere in Time

The course of a life can turn on a penny as we learn in the 1980 film Somewhere In Time. The movie was based on Richard Matheson’s beloved sci/fi book Bid Time Return. The story begins with Richard Collier having a strange encounter with an old woman who begs him to “come back to me” and gives him a pocket watch. Shortly later, Collier learns that she was Elise McKenna, an actress from the early 1900s. He grows enamored with her photograph and becomes determined to find a way to travel back in time to meet her. His former professor, who believes he has self-hypnotised himself back to the year 1571, teaches him how to will himself into 1912. When he finds Elise, their whirlwind romance lights up the screen.

Amy and Rory’s storyline on Doctor Who

Amy Pond and Rory Williams are among the most popular companions in Doctor Who, and their romance stands out as one of the new series’ best storylines. They have rocky moments, but seeing their struggles only makes their relationship stronger and more believable to the viewer. We get to see their relationship develop from Rory’s one-sided teenage crush to Amy’s willingness to sacrifice everything for him. It’s difficult to pick one episode to represent their love story, but the tenth episode of the sixth series is a good place to start. The Girl Who Waited deals with some of the more complex issues with time travel and it’s fascinating to watch these characters navigate a messy situation involving both a younger and older Amy.

Back to the Future

Oh Back to the Future, we will never get tired of your time travel hijinks. Marty McFly travels back in time to the 1950s, and in doing so, stops his parents from meeting for the first time. Instead of falling in love with George McFly when her father hits him with her car, Lorraine Baines starts falling for her time traveling son. Hilarity ensues as Marty must play cupid and get his parents to the Enchantment Under the Sea dance before he and his siblings disappear forever. Spoiler, he succeeds, and his parents fall madly in love. As George tells Lorraine, “I’m your density. I mean, your destiny.”

Safety Not Guaranteed

A man named Kenneth posts an ad seeking: “Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.” Darius, a young reporter, is sent out with a group to investigate his claims and see what he’s really after, or if he’s just insane. After winning his trust, the two begin to bond. What follows is a beautiful story about two people learning to accept and trust each other’s weirdness. They build a time machine, train, and do everything they can to prepare themselves for the future. Spoiler: The ending is subjective and we never learn for certain if Kenneth can successfully time travel.

Only Backwards

This short story explores the sweetness of a first kiss, and the sacrifices made for loved ones. Mason invents a time machine so he can revisit the most important moment in his life, but not everything goes according to plan. When he returns, every memory after that moment is gone. He is a teenager trapped in a 40 year old body, with no recollection of his beloved wife. They touchingly console each other as they navigate this strange situation. She tells him, “Don’t worry…You won’t be alone. I’ll be here.”

Midnight in Paris

Gil Pender doesn’t have the best of luck with his time traveling romances, unless you count his love affair with the city of Paris. In Midnight in Paris, he is on vacation with his fiancee when he discovers that every night at midnight, he travels back in time. He finds himself in the 1920s and he encounters all of his favorite writers and artists from that time period. With his present-day romance going poorly, he falls in love with Picasso’s mistress Adriana. They begin a relationship, but the present is always there, calling Gil back. This nostalgic movie is romantic, funny, and full of fantasy.

Sense of the Past

When Henry James died, he left an unfinished time travel romance novel behind. It was published in 1917 and spawned a play and two movies. In the novel, Ralph Pendrel discovers that by going into his ancestor’s London home, he is also transported to their time. In this time period, he is engaged to a woman named Molly Midmore, although he finds himself more attracted to her sister, Nan. The notes Henry James left outlining the rest of the novel make it clear that Nan reciprocate his love, and eventually realizes that he is a time traveler. If the novel had been finished, Ralph would have had to choose between returning to his own time and another woman or staying with Nan in the past.

The Dancers at the Edge of Time

The universe is about to end, but that doesn’t stop Jherek Carnelian from having love on the brain. From the moment he sees Amelia Underwood, a Victorian time traveler, he knows that they will fall in love. Michael Moorecock’s series which includes An Alien Heat, The Hollow Lands, and the End of All Songs, follows the lovers as they bounce back and forth through time. As the series goes on we see that their relationship is more important than even they could have imagined.

Quantum Leap: Star Crossed

Sam Beckett’s wife left him at the altar, but it didn’t happen in every timeline. In Star Crossed Sam leaps back to Donna’s college days long before their marriage is set to begin. He theorized that she couldn’t commit to him due to issues with her father, and he sets out to fix them before it’s too late. Al repeatedly warns him against this plan, but Sam loves her and will do anything to give their relationship a second chance.

Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are transported to New York City during the Great Depression — and I bet you can guess which ones falls in love. McCoy saves Edith Keeler’s life, and Kirk falls in love with her. Edith is an impressive pacifist who would have gone on to delay WWII and indirectly lead to an Axis victory. Lovestruck Kirk must make a terrible decision—to set the timeline right with Edith’s death, or change the course of history forever.

Time and Again

At the heart of Jack Finney’s classic time travel novel is the romance between Simon Morley and Julia Charbonneau. The book has a complex plot full of action, mystery, and adventure, but the love story holds it all together. Simon Morley travels back to the 1882 New York City in order to solve a mystery. While in the past he falls in love with Julia, although she doesn’t immediately reciprocate his feelings. Their sweet relationship has many memorable moments, but none as fun as the scenes of 1882 Julia experiencing 1970 NYC.

The Man Who Folded Himself

David Gerrold’s The Man Who Folded himself gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “self love.” Daniel Eakins is a college student who inherits a Timebelt, and with it the ability to travel through time. He uses it to travel to his future where he meets alternate versions of himself, and eventually having a sexual relationship with himself. He eventually meets a female version of himself, Diane, and they attempt to have a more traditional relationship, even having a child together. It’s a strange sort of love story, but that doesn’t make the book any less powerful.

Top 10 Best Time-Travel Romance Movies

Top 10 Best Time-Travel Romance Movies

True love knows no bounds. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Time-Travel Romance Movies. For this list, we’ll be including films that involve time loops. However, both the time travel and the romance have to make up a significant portion of the plot/story. That means films like “The Terminator,” which features a romantic subplot but is first and foremost an action flick, will not be included.

#10: “Kate & Leopold” (2001)

Director James Mangold rarely dips his toes in the romantic comedy genre, but when he does he’s known for delivering endlessly entertaining high-concept flicks. “Kate & Leopold” is no exception, asking audiences to suspend their disbelief for just over two hours in order to appreciate the humor and love shared between the two titular characters. The film is about a 19th century duke who finds himself transported to modern day New York City. There he meets Kate, a market researcher, and the two quickly fall in love. The film doesn’t overplay the time travel aspect of the story, instead choosing to focus on the relationship between the two leads. Hugh Jackman earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance and it’s easy to see why.

#9: “Back to the Future Part III” (1990)

Known more for its depiction of time travel than for its romantic subplots, few could deny that the “Back to the Future” film series has featured a number of iconic romances. In fact, the original film was almost exclusively about Marty trying to make his parents fall in love. In “Back to the Future Part III,” it was Dr. Emmett Brown who found himself pierced by cupid’s arrow, falling for fellow science-lover Clara Clayton after saving her from an untimely demise. While the film is far from a rom-com, the scenes featuring Doc and Clara are undeniably sweet and their relationship brings closure to a part of Doc’s arc we never thought we needed to see.

#8: “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986)

While dated in some areas, “Peggy Sue Got Married” is nonetheless a thoroughly enjoyable film, with big names both on-screen and off. Helmed by legendary director Francis Ford Coppola and starring Kathleen Turner and Nicolas Cage, the film tells the story of a jaded divorcee trying to get over her ex-husband’s infidelities, who is suddenly transported back in time to her senior year of high school. While in the past, she gleans information about her future that she’d previously overlooked and, in the process, manages to forgive her husband’s mistakes. The film is worth revisiting for Turner’s performance alone, which earned her an Oscar nomination.

#7: “Somewhere in Time” (1980)

While time travel romance flicks often lean towards the comedic, there are others that throw themselves wholeheartedly into the melancholic nature of finding the love of your life in the past. One such film is “Somewhere in Time,” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Reeve plays Richard Collier, a playwright living in 1980 who is bewitched by the portrait of a woman from 1912. Through the power of hypnosis, he travels back in time to be with her, and the two quickly fall in love. The chemistry between Reeve and Seymour is palpable, making the film’s ending all the more emotional.

#6: “The Lake House” (2006)

While critics were quick to judge “The Lake House’s” for its convoluted premise and narrative inconsistencies, others, such as Roger Ebert, were quick to point out that “A time travel story works on emotional, not temporal, logic.” When viewed from that perspective, “The Lake House” is not only one of the best romantic films of the 2000s, but one of the most imaginative time travel flicks as well. Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock deliver passionate performances as two lovers living in different times, who manage to communicate through their lake house mailbox. Rooting for two characters to get together despite their difficult circumstances has never been so easy.

#5: “Midnight in Paris” (2011)

“Midnight in Paris” might just be Woody Allen’s most complete film. It’s certainly one of his best written, winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The film centers on screenwriter Gil Pender, who is obsessed with the literary world of the 1920s. During a visit to Paris, he is magically transported to his dream era, where he meets everyone from Ernest Hemingway to Pablo Picasso. He also meets and falls in love with a beautiful muse named Adriana. However, despite the vigor he once felt, he soon discovers that his ideal time period may eventually sour on him. So, will he continue to escape to the 1920s or learn to function in his own time?

#4: “13 Going on 30” (2004)

Be careful what you wish for! “13 Going on 30” is about Jenna Rink, a girl who wants nothing more than to be one of the popular girls. However, when the popular girls pull a mean prank at her 13th birthday party, she cries and wishes that she could be a 30-year-old woman. The next morning, she is both shocked and elated to wake up in her 30-year-old body. Unfortunately for Jenna, it appears she turned into a bit of a jerk during those missing 17 years and is now estranged from both her parents and her former best friend, Matty. Featuring heartfelt and hilarious performances from Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, “13 Going on 30” is a coming-of-age story that definitely sticks the landing.

#3: “Groundhog Day” (1993)

The time travel genre is as much about second chances as it is about imaginative plot devices. From “If Only” to “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” time travel is often used as a way to show wayward men the error of their ways. Few films did it with as much heart and humor as “Groundhog Day.” Known for Bill Murray’s curmudgeonly performance and popularizing the time loop trope, the film touches upon everything that makes cinematic time travel great. From getting to punch the annoying guy in the face to finally winning over the woman you love, the film is pure escapism. However, at its core, it’s about love and the things we’re willing to do for it… such as spending 10,000 years in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

#2: “The Time Traveler's Wife” (2009)

Starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams as the titular time traveler and his wife, this film weaves a complicated narrative, one that involves one of cinematic history’s most impossible romances. Bana plays Henry DeTamble, a man who sporadically travels through time with no control over when he will disappear or where he will end up. Keeping him grounded is his wife Clare, who knows more about him than he does about himself - thanks to his constant unplanned temporal travels. Through their love for one another, they manage to endure the trials and tribulations of Henry’s condition… for a time. All we’ll say is that you’d be wise to have a box of tissue ready at the end of this one… Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions: “When We First Met” (2018) “Happy Accidents” (2000) “Safety Not Guaranteed” (2012) “Time After Time” (1979) “Les Visiteurs” (1993)

#1: “About Time” (2013)

Featuring a who’s who of lovable actors, from Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams to Bill Nighy and a young Margot Robbie, the film is about a young man who upon turning 21 discovers that the men in his family can travel to different points in their own lives. Armed with this newfound knowledge, Gleeson’s character embarks on a quest to win over the love of his life. Along the way, he discovers what it means to live each day as if it were the last and to cherish the time he has with his friends and family. Featuring great writing and a fantastic soundtrack, “About Time” is the perfect date night flick. Exactly how many time travelers can McAdams date, though?

A timeless love story set in 1942 about divergent paths, choices, and a meeting of hearts and ideals. When John Barnes acquires an old book filled with intriguing handwritten notes, he begins a correspondence with its previous owner – and it promises to be more than just an exchange of letters.

“An unapologetically romantic short film wrapped around the wondrously infinite possibilities of love and timeless romance.” – The Independent Critic

Starring Chris Kennedy, Patrick Tuttle, Carey Lessard, Elaine Fabyianic, James Walker, Kimmin O’Donnell, Margo Kellison, Barry Richmond, Aaron Ousley.

In this MASTERPIECE Classic, a legendary lover romances his way across eighteenth-century Europe in a rollicking retelling of the life of Casanova, with Peter O’Toole as the champion seducer in his golden years and David Tennant as Casanova in his frisky prime. With a ‘whizzy script that brims with pace and wit’ by writer-of-the-moment Russell T. Davies.

The abiding theme throughout is love for the opposite sex, and at least once for the same one. Casanova was noteworthy in his time for taking a sincere interest in his partners’ personal interests and pleasure, which perhaps explains his spectacular success as a lover. The production shifts back and forth between the aging Casanova, at work on his memoirs and reminiscing to a very curious parlor maid, Edith; and the young Casanova, whom we see enacting these astonishing adventures with gusto.

Also starring is Laura Fraser as the beautiful Henriette, a match for Casanova himself in charm, trickery, repartee, and romantic longing; Rupert Penry-Jones as Count Grimani, Casanova’s rival in love for Henriette; Shaun Parkes as Casanova’s cheeky servant, Rocco; and Nina Sosanya as Bellino, a castrato impersonator who complicates Casanova’s love life.

Starring James Holly, David Tennant, David Foxxe, Tamzin Griffin, Peter O’Toole, Clare Higgins, Rose Byrne, Andrew Vincent, Dervla Kirwan, John Sandilands, Rosanna Lavelle, Tim Scott-Walker, Zac Fox, Mark Heap.

In 19th century New Orleans creole Henriette must choose between love and devotion to the church. Neither choice is going to be easy, as there is great opposition to her ideas of breaking traditions. Inspired by a true story, ‘The Courage to Love’ tells the story of a black woman who is part of a mixed-race affluent society in pre-civil war New Orleans.

Starring Vanessa Williams, Gil Bellows, Karen Williams, Lisa Bronwyn Moore, David La Haye, Cynda Williams, Diahann Carroll, Stacy Keach.

PG-13 with Dove “Family-Approved” Seal.

Cyrano, the charismatic swordsman-poet with the absurd nose, hopelessly loves the beauteous Roxane; she, in turn, confesses to Cyrano her love for the handsome but tongue-tied Christian.

Poet, romantic and sword fighter Cyrano de Bergerac loves the beautiful Roxane, but although he is proud enough of his bulbous proboscis that he regularly duels those who dare mock it, he fears she could never love a man with such an enormous nose. When he learns that she loves the handsome guardsman Christian (William Prince), Cyrano provides the tongue-tied young man with the words of love and devotion he wishes he could say to Roxanne himself. Set in France in 1640 during the Stuart era.

“There is beauty and magic in the things that Cyrano says. He is still a magnificent character. Thank goodness, he is on the screen.” – New York Times

Starring José Ferrer, Mala Powers, William Prince, Morris Carnovsky, Ralph Clanton, Lloyd Corrigan, Virginia Farmer, Edgar Barrier, Elena Verdug.

I totally disagree with you about the 1970 version of Jane Eyre. It does not explain why Jane is sent to Lohwood, George C. Scott is a good Mr. Rochester but Susannah York is awful. It skips over important details.Very disappointed.

10 Funniest Quotes From Inside Out 2

Independence day: the best movies to watch on the fourth of july, long-awaited metal gear solid movie finally gets promising update.

The concept of time travel has captivated audiences since its emergence into the mainstream. The Idea that one can move between time and space has been a popular plot line in both fantasy and sci-fi alike. These films are often paired with the notion that disturbing any point of the past will greatly impact the future. Yet, what happens to time travel when it enters rom-com territory?

Science fiction TV shows like The Twilight Zone and major blockbusters like Back to the Future have shown the risks of time travel for the world at large. However, time travel in rom-coms is almost entirely about the impact of true love. Like a sci-fi storyline, any event can greatly impact the main character’s future. However, in these plots, the beloved couple either never meets or splits before the ending credits. Here are the best rom-coms that depict time travel.

5 Midnight in Paris

2011's Midnight in Paris featured Owen Wilson as Gil Pender, an aspiring writer who is in Paris for holiday with his fiancée (Rachel McAdams). Gil tours the city at night and comes across a group of people who deeply resemble the great artists and writers of the past. He is invited out with them and allegedly transported to the past as he visits all the greats' favorite spots. The more time that Gil spends venturing Paris with his beloved heroes in the past, the more displeased he is with his present day life and begins to long for the times of old. Midnight in Paris explores the complexities of time travel while introducing the all too familiar notion of nostalgia. The romance has a few comedic beats, but the melancholy tone of the overall longing that the film displays, makes the idea of time travel all the more appealing.

4 About Time

On the day of his 21st birthday a young man named Tim, played by Domhnall Gleeson, is told by his father that the men in his family can travel in time. Although it is seemingly unfair to the women in the family, About Time focuses on the relationship between Tom and his father, played by Bill Nighy. Tim learns that he can't change the past to reflect on the present, but he can in fact use his future knowledge to change how he reacts in past circumstances. The romance between Tim and the woman he swoons via time travel, Mary, played by Rachel McAdams , offers a delightful commentary on the presence of love across time and space. However, underneath the romance and light comedic beats, the film harkens on a sadness that exists across all realities. Tim learns that his father is going to die, so he travels back in time to have a conversation with hm, but soon realizes that he can't spend his life traveling backwards to live forever in the memories with his father. About Time finds its strength in an overall happy love story, with a relatively sad undertone.

3 13 Going on 30

13 Going on 30 is not only one of Jennifer Garner's best films, but one of the best rom-coms of the 2000s, per AV Club. Like most teens, Jenna, played by Christa B. Allen, thinks everything will be different for her when she is older and in her 30s. After her birthday is ruined, using some of the glitter from a doll house her best guy friend, Matt, makes for her, she wishes to be one of the cool girls in school, and to be 30 years old. Jenna, now played by Jennifer Garner, wakes up and realizes that her wish came true. She has traveled through time and is now 30, working for her favorite magazine. 13 Going on 30 offers a lot of laughs, and a satisfying ending despite a few bumps in the road. The movie's use of time travel serves as the classic lesson to be careful what you wish for, as your wish may not be everything you ever dreamed it would be.

Click , the 2006 genre jumping movie, serves up some of Adam Sandler's classic comedy, but some deal of sadness. Sandler plays a man named Michael Newman, who desperately wants to skip ahead to his big promotion. Michael can't seem to find the time, and is greeted by a mysterious man named Morty, who is played by Christopher Walken, who gives him a remote that will allow him to fast-forward, rewind, pause, or mute his entire life. This all seems great at first, until the remote begins to ceaselessly fast-forward through time. In his old age, Michael ends up alone, his wife having left him and his kids practically being strangers. For a brief moment, he dies in the rain, wishing he could go back, all before waking up in the Bed Bath and Beyond he originated in. To Michael, his time traveling device was a dream, but the lesson still remains.

1 When We First Met

Noah, played by Adam DeVine, has been in love with his best friend for years. Thinking that he can alter the night they met in order to win her affections, Noah visits a photo booth that allows him to travel through time and alter the night over and over again. Each circumstance that he alters ends up different, and there is even a timeline where he ends up not meeting her at all. After many attempts and failures, Noah realizes that it is better to remain her friend, as fate intended for the pair to be initually. When We First Met is an easy watch as far as rom-coms go, and the added bits of time travel allow for a much more interesting premise.

The only problem is that there are too many.

From elaborate costumes to sumptuous storylines (and the strong desire to live in a time other than the present)—there is so much to love about period dramas. With the push of a button, these TV series and movies act as instant portals into other eras. The only question is: Where do you want to time-travel first?

Some stories come from real-life events, while others are adapted from classic novels or are completely fictional glimpses into life during that particular era. And, fear not, there are quite a few sweeping romances . We've also included Spanish-language picks , since period dramas are hardly limited by geographic region. Here are some of our favorite period dramas streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, Starz, and beyond.

Bridgerton (2020-present)

bridgerton daphne and simon

Still, with its lush sets and intricate costumes, Bridgerton is definitely a portal to the past. In season 1, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) brokers a deal with Simon Bassett, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) to pretend to be engaged during courting season. Then they actually fall for each other. Season 2 picked up right where they left off, with Daphne's brother, Anthony, finding his true love. The Great (2020-present)

the great elle fanning and nicholas hoult

The 18th century is a popular era for period pieces, but this Emmy-nominated dark-comedy series about Catherine the Great's rise to prominence in Russia diverges wildly from other stories evoking that time. It's got all the lavish costumes, palaces, and dinner parties you crave from a historical drama, sure, but, as the tagline clarifies, it's only a "mostly true story"—so it also provides hilarious oddities like a toad predicting when Catherine will give birth and a crocodile let loose in the palace. Plus, Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning's chemistry as Emperor Peter and Catherine is tough to stop watching.

Starring: Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee

Sadly, the series was canceled after just one season, but it's still a thrilling, spooky watch if you like your period pieces to come with a dash of sci-fi.

Emily Dickinson is one of the most mysterious and widely discussed poets of all time—particularly because, as far as recorded history goes, she spent most of her life secluded in her bedroom—only for her nearly 1,800 brilliant poems to be discovered after she died. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Emily in this anachronistic series that follows Emily's relationship with her family, including her brother's wife, Susan, with whom the real Dickinson had a deep bond with, according to their letters. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman - Sully and Dr. Mike

Dr. Michaela Quinn leaves her upper-class life in Boston to become a town doctor in Colorado. There she creates a new family and finds love.

One of the main reasons I watched this show as a kid was for the love story between Dr. Quinn and Sully!

And while this show is on the cheesy side, it’s an enjoyable ’90s series the whole family can enjoy. Jane Seymour is always fabulous too. So, if you’re looking for good, old-fashioned entertainment with a female lead, this is a great choice.

(See Jane Seymour and Joe Lando reunite in their new Christmas movie. Check out the Lifetime Christmas movie schedule for all the details! )

Content Note:  TV-PG for mild violence and suspenseful situations.

#5:  DRACULA  (2013-2014)

Dracula Cast.

The mysterious Dracula (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) arrives in London intent on revenge, only to fall in love with a woman who resembles his deceased wife.

While NBC canceled Dracula after season one, it’s worth watching if you enjoy a mix of British period drama, romantic vampires, Gaslamp fantasy, and steampunk.

The love story is charming, Jonathan Rhys Meyers broods brilliantly as the Byronic monster, and the supporting characters are excellent.

Where to Watch:  Stream Dracula on Tubi or buy the series on Digital and DVD.

Content Note:  TV-14 for sensuality, violence, and intense scenes.

Because it’s one of the best, most swoon-worthy romantic period dramas of all time! It has everything from the star-crossed romance to mystery to shocking twists. You won’t be able to stop watching this excellent period drama.

Word of mouth made this Spanish series so popular that numerous remakes have popped up worldwide, including a contemporary American version. But don’t miss out on watching the original – it’s by far the best!

The romantic leading man, Yon Gonzalez, could give Aidan Turner a run for his money.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Pantaya or buy on DVD. It’s currently only available to watch in Spanish without English subtitles. But hopefully, that will change soon, and it will return to Netflix.

The Hour

The Emmy-winning series follows a TV news crew in 1950s England. The all-star cast includes Romola Garai, Ben Whishaw, Dominic West, Anna Chancellor, Peter Capaldi, and more.

The slow-burn romance between Bel and Freddie builds to an epic climax, showcasing Garai and Whishaw’s undeniable chemistry.

And while the network unfairly canceled  The Hour  after the second season, this series’ brilliance can’t be understated.

The Hour  is a romantic historical series to watch if you enjoy thinking shows. It’s like  Mad Men  but with more romance.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Acorn TV, Pluto TV, and Tubi, or buy on Digital or DVD.

Content Note:  TV-14 for a few explicit love scenes, violence, and language.

#8:  LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD  (2008-2011)

The emotional, uplifting, and funny series follows the relationship between two neighboring communities – one poor – the other wealthy.

The series follows the teenage Laura, an aspiring writer, moving from her poor village, Lark Rise, to Candleford. There, she begins a postmistress apprenticeship with her second cousin and now boss, Dorcas Lane.

Lark Rise  will become your one weakness! (This reason will become clear once you’ve seen the series.)

Kidding aside, this is one of the best period dramas due to the memorable romances, interesting, layered characters, and brilliant emotional stories.

With a top-notch cast, including popular period drama favorites and excellent writing, you can’t go wrong with this series.

Mr Selfridge

Mr. Selfridge , in a fictionalized version of the true story, follows the lives of Harry Selfridge, his family, employees, and friends from the start of his famous London department store in 1908 until 1929.

While a few viewers felt Jeremy Piven was miscast, the series is superb – especially on rewatch. With romance and engaging drama, you can’t go wrong with this romantic period drama series.

Katherine Kelly and Amanda Abbington are scene-stealers, and the romance between Agnes and Henry is passionate and charming.

Where to Watch:  PBS Passport, PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel, and Freevee. You can also buy on digital or DVD.

#12:  OUTLANDER  (2014-)

Outlander. 20 of the Most Romantic Period Drama TV Series to Watch

For the epic Claire and Jamie romance! While I find the show too explicit, the good love story across time is undeniable, and the writing is excellent.

Denise, a young shop girl, moves to the city to work at the first glamorous department store. There, she falls in love with the modern world and the department store’s owner.

The characters are excellent, the writing superb, and you won’t want to miss the swoony Moray and Denise romance.

Where to Watch:  The Paradise  is available to stream on Britbox or to buy on digital or DVD.

Content Note:  The British series is TV-PG-like.

#14:  POLDARK  (2015-2019)

Poldark. 20 of the Most Romantic Period Drama TV Series to Watch

Ross Poldark returns home to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War – only to discover everything has changed. Poldark recreates a new life for himself and falls in love.

For the epic romance between Ross and Demelza ! Plus, Aidan Turner, as a period drama leading man, is one of the best. He broods like Heathcliff and brings his best acting to the performance.

Besides Turner, the rest of the cast also shines.

Overall, Poldark is a brilliant romantic period drama series with gorgeous scenery , a haunting musical score, beautiful costumes, intelligent scripts, and excellent actors. It’s based on a series of popular novels.

Where to Watch:  You can stream it on PBS Passport, PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel, or Amazon Prime Video. It’s also available to buy digitally or on DVD.

#15:  REIGN  (2013-2017)

Reign - Renaissance and Elizabethan Era. 20 of the Most Romantic Period Drama TV Series to Watch

Reign  follows the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots – mainly focusing on her early years.

If you prefer historical accuracy, this is not the show for you! However, if you enjoy YA romance, historical fantasy, and Megan Follows ( Anne of Green Gables ), then this is a fun, entertaining series.

Megan Follows as Catherine de Medici and Craig Parker as Narcisse play the sympathetic villains/heroes and steal the show with their conniving plotting and zippy one-liners.

Trust me. If you miss these two actors on screen together, you’re missing out.

But what about romance? This show is, by definition, a romance – the most significant romance between Mary and Francis. But there is plenty of love to go around.

Where to Watch:  Stream on the CW Seed or buy on digital or DVD.

Content Note:  TV-14 for a few semi-explicit love scenes, violence, and mild profanity.

#16:  ROAD TO AVONLEA  (1990-1996)

A young girl (Sarah Polley) is sent to live with her mother’s relatives in Prince Edward Island. Set in the early 1900’s, the series follows her adventures, as well as that of her family and the town’s people as she grows up in Avonlea.

If you loved the ’80s  Anne of Green Gables , then the spin-off TV series is a must-see period drama. The show is sweet, inspiring, and nostalgic.

It’s also well-written, with fantastic romances (Gus and Felicity!), amazing characters, and memorable stories. It’s my favorite show of all time. Whenever I need to de-stress, this is the show I watch.

Where to Watch: Rent/ Buy digitally from Gazebo TV. You can also buy the series on DVD.

Content Note:  TV-G. It’s safe for the entire family.

17: SCARLET HEART (2011)/ SCARLET HEART RYEO (2016)

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo

Viki Synopsis of  Scarlet Heart :

After a terrible car accident, 25-year-old Zhang Xiao ( Liu Shi Shi ) travels from modern-day China back to the 18th century. She is incarnated as one of her previous lives – that of 16-year-old Maertai Rouxi, the daughter of a Manchu general, during the Qing Dynasty.

Viki Synopsis of  Scarlet Heart Ryeo :

Go Ha Jin is a young woman of the 21st century who, following her break-up with her boyfriend, finds herself by the sea. In trying to save a child from drowning, an eclipse appears and she is transported to the Goryeo era, during the reign of Taejo, the first king of that era.

She will then have to live under the identity of Hae Su, cousin of the wife of Wang Wuk, the 8th Prince, and will thus be involved in the conflicts between the Wang Prince.

If you enjoy time-travel romance or historical romance, both the Chinese and Korean adaptations are excellent. I prefer the Korean one, but it depends on your taste!

The Chinese series has two seasons, while the Korean only one. The latter has a cliffhanger , and no word of a season two has yet happened. So, it’s unlikely to at this point. Thankfully, it’s not hard to guess what happens next.

Where to Watch:  You can only buy  Scarlet Heart Ryeo  on  DVD . You can watch the Chinese version on Viki.

Content Note:  TV-14 for violence.

#19:  VICTORIA  (2016-)

Victoria. 20 of the Most Romantic Period Drama TV Series to Watch

#21:  A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES (2018-2022)

A Discovery of Witches Season 2 - Diana and Matthew in Elizabethan London

A witch works with a vampire to uncover the truth behind the existence of witches, vampires, and daemons – only for the two to fall in love, a rule forbidden by the Council.

A Discovery of Witches  is a brilliant example of how to adapt a book series right. Yes, the final season seemed to have a budget cut and took out more scenes from the book than I would have liked, but overall, this romantic series is epic, well-written, and full of smoldering chemistry between Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer.

While only part of the series takes place in the past ( Season 2 is almost entirely set in Elizabethan times ), historical fantasy fans should love this epic vampire show.

Where to Watch:  Stream on AMC+, Shudder, and Sundance Now, or buy on Digital and DVD.

Content Note:  TV-MA but mild overall. There are a couple of sensual love scenes that are only semi-explicit. There is some violence and profanity – but not constant.

#23:  ANNE OF GREEN GABLES – AND THE SEQUELS (1985-2000)

Anne shirley in anne of green gables

Official Synopsis :

Based on the international best-selling novel by L.M. Montgomery, this Emmy Award-winning production follows the provocative life drama of orphan Anne Shirley (Megan Follows), from her struggles as an adolescent to her triumphs as a young woman. The result is a delicate epic full of wit, style, and emotional power.

Sullivan Entertainment produced four miniseries about the classic character Anne Shirley, but the original two from the 80s are absolute perfection! (Although I still loved the third and fourth ones – even though they departed from following the books.)

From the romantic atmosphere to the costumes, sets, and production designs, perfect casting (with award-worthy performances), the iconic love story between Anne and Gilbert is portrayed beautifully; the scripts, and so much more, ultimately created a magical adaptation.

This is one romantic period drama everyone needs to see.

Where to Watch: Rent/ Buy digitally from Gazebo TV . You can also buy the series on DVD.

Content Note:  TV-G. The third movie,  Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story,  is more like TV-PG.

#24:  AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (2021-)

around the world in 80 days featured image with David Tennant

Official PBS Synopsis :

Around the World in 80 Days  is a thrilling new adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel. David Tennant ( Good Omens ,  Doctor Who ) stars as literature’s greatest explorer, Phileas Fogg.

He is joined on his incredible journey by French actor Ibrahim Koma ( OSS 117 ,  Wùlu ) as Jean Passepartout, Fogg’s irrepressible valet, and German actress Leonie Benesch ( The Crown ,  Babylon Berlin ) as Abigail “Fix” Fortescue, a determined and headstrong journalist.

Around the World   in 80 Days  is incredible fun – much like watching  Doctor Who  historical adventure episodes with the 10th Doctor!

The addition of Abigail (inspired by Nellie Bly) is totally brilliant! And her romance with Passepartout is romantic and sweet.

Where to Watch:  Stream on PBS Passport and PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel. You can also buy it on Digital and DVD.

Season 2 then has the eldest (and serious) brother, Lord Anthony Bridgerton, deal with his own romance with the intelligent Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).

Meanwhile, the gossipy (and secretive) Lady Whistledown spills all the secrets about the wealthy members of society.

Bridgerton  proves the staying power of diversity within the period drama romance genre! With the romance, the acting, and the entertainment factor, this is a period romance you’ll want to binge-watch.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Netflix.

Content Note:  TV-MA for steamy love scenes with nudity, especially in Season 1. Season 2 is much milder.

Elizabeth Gaskell’s classic story comes to life in this story about the women of a small British town in the 1840s.

Cranford  is an Emmy-winning series with some of the best actors ever to grace the screen – from Judi Dench to Michael Gambon, Eileen Atkins, Imelda Staunton, and more! Even Tom Hiddleston and Jodie Whittaker star.

The writing is splendid, the characters rich, the scenery gorgeous, the love stories emotional, and the costumes lovely!

Where to Watch:  Britbox, Britbox Amazon Channel. You can also buy it on Digital or DVD.

Based on George Eliot’s masterpiece,  Daniel Deronda  follows the story of Gwendolen Harleth, a complex heroine who falls in love with the unique and selfless Daniel Deronda.

She soon becomes stuck in an abusive marriage with a wealthy man while Daniel begins to investigate the mystery of his unknown parentage.

Romola Garai and Hugh Dancy smolder onscreen together – and you find yourself rooting for them – even though they’re not meant to be.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Britbox, Hulu, or the Britbox Amazon Channel. You can also buy it on DVD or digitally.

David Copperfield 1999

Based on Charles Dickens’s famous novel,  David Copperfield  tells the tale of a young orphan as he grows up in Victorian England and deals with friendship, hardship, and love.

Before Daniel Radcliffe was Harry Potter, he was another iconic book character: David Copperfield. He plays the younger version of David, showing lots of promise as a young actor.

Maggie Smith also stars – even earning a Primetime Emmy for her performance as Betsey Trotwood.

The rest of the cast is also excellent: From Ian McKellen to Ciarán McMenamin, Dawn French, Imelda Staunton, and more.

This BBC romantic series is precisely what you’d want from a British period drama.

Where to Watch:  Stream it on Britbox, Britbox Amazon Channel, Hulu, and Crackle. You can also buy it digitally and on DVD.

The young, destitute Mary Thorne grows up with her caring Uncle, Dr. Thorne. The story follows her relationship with a family and their son, Frank, in the nearby Greshambury Park Estate.

While they want him to marry for money, Frank and Mary want to be together.

Doctor Thorne  is a surprisingly sweet period romance from the usually more severe author, Anthony Trollope – happy ending and all.

Julian Fellowes – the creator of  Downton Abbey  – brings his signature writing style to this adaptation.

So, if you’re looking for an uplifting limited series, check out this underrated drama! Harry Richardson from  Poldark  and  The Gilded Age  and Stefani Martini star.

#31:  EMMA  (2009)

Emma 2009 still

Emma Woodhouse, a young and wealthy woman, meddles in the love affairs of everyone in her life – causing all sorts of trouble.

The Emmy-winning adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel comes to life in this brilliant, fleshed-out adaptation. Due to the longer running time as a miniseries, it has the time to explore the novel’s themes.

Plus, Romola Garai and Jonny Lee Miller have magnificent chemistry.

Other actors include Michael Gambon, Jodhi May, Blake Ritson, Tamsin Greig, Rupert Evans, and more.

Sandy Welch ( North & South, Jane Eyre ) wrote the screenplay.

If the higher production values in newer period pieces are more to your taste, the 2011 Emmy-winning miniseries with Gillian Anderson is stunning.

You can’t get much more romantic than these brilliant adaptations of Charlotte Bronte’s classic gothic novel. (Although, if you want to see which version I rank as number one, check out my list of  the best  Jane Eyre  adaptations .)

While Timothy Dalton brings Mr. Edward Rochester to life with a proper understanding of the Byronic Hero , Ruth Wilson shines as Jane in the artistic and swoony 2006 miniseries .

Both versions are worth your time and represent the best of the romantic period drama genre.

The thief Jean Valjean escapes from the relentless Inspector Javert and transforms his life for the better.

David Oyelowo is masterful as the obsessed Javert. His performance alone makes this drama worth checking out.

Thankfully, the rest of the period drama is just as good – telling the famous Victor Hugo story through a British period drama lens.

With Andrew Davies writing the script and excellent performances, it’s hard to go wrong with this one.

Dominic West, Olivia Colman, Adeel Akhtar, Lily Collins, Emma Fielding, Josh O’Connor, Joseph Quinn (the breakout star from  Stranger Things ), David Bradley, Johnny Flynn, Derek Jacobi, and Ellie Bamber also star.

Based on George Eliot’s classic novel, the BBC miniseries tells the tale of the people living in the town of Middlemarch.

When a clever young woman foolishly marries an older man, she deals with the aftermath – including falling in love with a young artist.

Middlemarch  came before the iconic 95 BBC adaptation of  Pride and Prejudice  with Colin Firth – but the book was adapted in a similar style from the same screenwriter, Andrew Davies.

The adaptation follows the book and focuses on clever dialogue and good actors – making it compelling to watch.

The romance between Dorothea and Will is terrific too.

The BBC adaptation of  North & South  is the greatest romantic period drama series of all time. The writing, the costumes, the acting, the story, the characters, the romance, the cinematography, the set design, and more all come together to create a period drama masterpiece.

Richard Armitage also gives the performance of a lifetime as John Thornton, forever solidifying him as a powerful romantic leading man onscreen.

Our Mutual Friend 1998

Set in 1860s Victorian London, Charles Dickens’ tale follows interweaving stories amid themes of love, jealousy, and greed.

Our Mutual Friend  is an outstanding romantic period drama miniseries from the BBC that often falls under the radar – mostly due to the passage of time.

But it’s an adaptation that should never be forgotten or overlooked. It won four BAFTAS. Not to mention, Paul McGann gives one of his best performances as the melancholy Eugene.

Paul McGann and Keeley Hawes portray a beautiful but sad love story between Eugene and Lizzie.

The sweeter romance, however, belongs to Bella (Anna Friel) and John, and everything works out just as it should – as one might expect in a Dickens story.

Sandy Welch penned the screenplay.

Where to Watch:   Stream on Britbox, Britbox Amazon Channel, or buy digitally and on DVD.

Content Note:  TV-PG for violence.

#42:  PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1995)

Pride and prejudice 1995 promo shot with Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth

Jane Austen’s classic novel tells of the love story between Mr. Darcy, a prideful wealthy estate owner, and the witty Elizabeth Bennet, who is prejudiced against him.

This adaptation of  Pride and Prejudice  is arguably (with perhaps  Downton Abbey ) one of the most famous romantic period dramas ever made. It’s also one of the best.

Colin Firth’s star-making performance as Darcy and Jennifer Ehle’s splendid witty performance as Elizabeth Bennet, mixed with Andrew Davies’ romantic – slightly steamy (Colin Firth in a wet t-shirt) interpretation of the material, helped create the masterful production that went on to have a significant moment in pop culture.

Pride and Prejudice  is a timeless adaptation you can watch again and again. For more movies and adaptations, see 15 of the Best Pride and Prejudice Adaptations, Ranked .

Where to Watch:  Stream on Britbox, Britbox Amazon Channel, Hulu, and BYU TV. You can also buy it on Digital and DVD.

#43:  SANDITON (2019-2023)

Rose Williams and Theo James in Sanditon.

The series continues Jane Austen’s unfinished novel about the young heroine Charlotte Heywood and her adventures in the seaside resort village of Sanditon.

Sanditon  has had a rough time! It was canceled after a cliffhanger ending in Season 1, only to come back a couple of years later with some cast changes .

Despite all that,  Sanditon  is a witty, romantic series with fabulous female characters , diversity, and a fun, beautiful setting.

The final season will air sometime in 2023 .

Where to Watch:  Stream on PBS Passport and PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel. You can also buy both seasons digitally and on DVD. The final season will air on PBS and PBS Passport.

Content Note:  TV-14 for a few steamy scenes – especially in Season 1.

#44:  SENSE AND SENSIBILITY (2008)

Sense and Sensibility 2008 Elinor and Edward

Three sisters are left without an inheritance after their father dies. The two eldest sisters, Elinor and Marianne, learn to adjust to their new situation while finding love and experiencing heartbreak.

Andrew Davies adapts Jane Austen’s beloved novel in this excellent three-part miniseries. While it’s not as artistic as the 1995 film, the series has more time to explore different aspects of the book. And it is just as entertaining.

Sense & Sensibility  received two Primetime Emmy nominations and is a lovely version full of romance, emotional performances, and a top-notch script.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Britbox, Britbox Amazon Channel, Hulu, Crackle, Pluto TV, and Plex. You can also buy it digitally and on DVD.

Content Note:  TV-14 for some sensuality.

#45:  THE DURRELLS IN CORFU  (2016-2019)

The durrells publicity cast photo

Inspired by the real-life Durrell family, the show follows them during their time living in 1930s Greece.

If you love quirky costume dramas with eccentric characters, humor, and beautiful scenery, this one’s for you ! Keeley Hawes gives a wonderful performance as the mother, Louisa.

And Louisa’s slow-build romance with Spiros (Alexis Georgoulis) is surprisingly emotional and compelling.

As for her three children, their stories are also interesting to watch. And you can’t help wanting to find out what happens with The Durrells next.

Where to Watch:  Stream on PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel, PBS Passport, and Amazon Prime Video. You can also buy it digitally or on DVD.

Content Note:  It’s TV-PG but should probably be TV-14 for innuendo and adult themes.

#46:  THE GILDED AGE (2022-)

Louisa Jacobson and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age.

The show begins in 1882 and follows Marian Brook, a young woman in her 20s who moves to NYC to live with her wealthy aunts after her father dies.

She then becomes enmeshed in a social war between her aunt and their new neighbors, who are railroad tycoons.

The Gilded Age  is the American period drama we all deserve! Yes, it is written by the British screenwriter Julian Fellowes, but his signature wit and romanticized style suit the luxurious setting of Gilded New York City.

The story is set within the same universe as  Downton Abbey  – only 30 years earlier – so here’s to hoping younger versions of  Downton’s  older characters appear in the future!

The series is unabashedly romantic (much like  Downton ) with promising romances for several characters – upstairs and downstairs.

Not to mention the intriguing marriage between the ambitious railroad tycoons George and Bertha Russell. You’ll find yourself rooting for their marriage.

Overall, the lavish sets, costumes, witty dialogue, Edith Wharton-like story, and a diverse cast are sure to please the period drama aficionados out there.

You can read more about the new series  in our review .

Where to Watch:  Stream it on HBO Max or buy it on Digital and DVD.

Content Note:  TV-MA, but most episodes feel like TV-14. There is one scene of nudity in episode four, a couple of moments of sensuality, a transparent nightgown in episode 3, and a brief scene of violence. Overall, it’s very mild for a TV-MA HBO series.

#47:  THE WOMAN IN WHITE (2018)

the woman in white 2018 poster

Based on Wilkie Collins’ gothic sensation novel,  The Woman in White  follows two half-sisters, one of whom is forced into an arranged marriage with an ill-intentioned older man.

The 2018 miniseries has a gothic romanticism to its style – with mysteries to solve and a sweet love story.

The series also has fascinating female characters and excellent performances in this gorgeous-looking romantic period drama.

The cast includes Olivia Vinall, Ben Hardy, Jessie Buckley, Dougray Scott, and Charles Dance.

Where to Watch:  Stream on PBS Masterpiece Amazon Channel, PBS Passport, or buy on Digital and DVD.

Content Note:  TV-PG for thematic elements, mild violence, and intense situations.

#48:  THIS IS US (2016-2022)

This Is Us season 1 still of Jack and Rebecca

This Is Us  follows the Pearson family and their stories throughout their lives.

This Is Us  is one of the greatest television series of all time! The show has won four Primetime Emmys (with numerous more nominations) and is entertaining to watch.

The emotional series will pull on your heartstrings and keep you guessing what will happen from episode to episode.

While half the series is contemporary, the other half spans the past and future – mostly showing the Pearson family from the 1960s to the 1990s.

And while it’s undeniably a family drama, it’s just as much of a romantic drama with numerous authentic romances.

None more epic than the love story between the married couple, Jack and Rebecca Pearson – portrayed by Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore.

This is a quality show that is sure to make its mark on television history.

Where to Watch:  Stream on Hulu and Peacock or buy on Digital and DVD.

Content Note:  TV-14 for some language, sensuality, thematic elements, suggestive dialogue, and mild violence. Nothing vulgar or excessive.

#49:  VELVET (2013-2016)

Velvet spanish period drama

Velvet   follows the stories of the people working at a fashion house in 1950s Madrid.

The main storyline is about the star-crossed love story between Alberto, the heir of the fashion house, and Ana Ribera, a seamstress working there.

Romantic Spanish period dramas have a style all their own and are so much fun to watch!

Velvet  is a swoony story of star-crossed love with lots of gorgeous costumes and entertaining plot lines.

You can also check out the spin-off series,  Velvet Colección .

Content Note:  Season 1 is TV-14, but the later seasons are TV-MA with intermittent nudity and explicit lovemaking scenes. Seasons 3 and 4 also have profanity.

#50:  WIVES AND DAUGHTERS (1999)

Wives and Daughters 1999 picture

The daughter of a country doctor deals with a difficult new stepmother and a complicated stepsister while developing unrequited feelings for a friend.

Wives and Daughters  is a period drama gem with some of the best British actors starring – including Michael Gambon, who gives an award-winning performance (he won the BAFTA for Best Actor) as Squire Hamley.

The love story is unique, the writing solid, and the period drama look beautiful with great hairstyling, costumes, and production design.

Make sure to bring tissues when you watch this heartbreaking yet uplifting story based on Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel. This one gives all the feels!

Besides Gambon, Justine Waddell, Anthony Howell, Francesca Annis, Bill Patterson, Keeley Hawes, Tom Hollander, Iain Glenn, Penelope Wilton, and Rosamund Pike star.

Where to Watch:  Buy on DVD.

loved Kurt Seyit ve Sura. I couldn’t stop watching it! Now that it is off netflix, I watch on Youtube. I watched it enough before to be able to know what is going on without subtitles. I’m watching Outlander now. I like the story, but at times, I wish it would leave some of the romance to our imagination. One of the the things I really like about KvS was the subtleties of the romance.

I know no one will see this but I’m trying to look for a show that was about sisters growing up and finding love one of the sisters ends up with a abusive husband which she later leave and gets with a guy that has hair up to his chin it’s based in the 1800s and is called something like the the bongulars or something like that if you know the show please let me know thank you 🙂

I think you might be talking about “The Buccaneers.” 🙂

Loved North and South nothing is as romantic as when John gives Margaret the Rose at the station

Your suggestions were really helpful. Thank you! I also recommend another Turkish series, Wounded Love(Vatanim Sensin) It was a great show. The romance and relationships in this series were really wonderfully reflected…

Your suggestions were really helpful. Thank you! I also recommend another Turkish series, Wounded Love(Vatanim Sensin) It was a great show. The romance and relationships in this series were really wonderfully written.

Thank you for your recommendation! I haven’t heard of it.

There is a period drama that starts at a party and then there is a huge riot/war that starts. But at that party there is a rumor or betrayal is started… I can’t remember the rest and really want to watch the whole thing, not just the first episode. Please help if this sounds familiar. It would have been in the last 2 years

I think you might be talking about Belgravia.

Thank you so much for the list and especially for the content ratings and notes. I like to know what I am getting into before I watch and those notes are incredibly helpful (and not easy to find elsewhere!)

You’re welcome! We really feel adding content notes helps people choose the type of content best suited to their own interests and comfort level. Glad it helped!

historical time travel romance movies

TV’s Best-Ever Time-Travel Romance Shows, Ranked

What’s a few centuries between meant-to-be lovers? On television, the spacetime continuum is no match for romance, as characters overcome differences of decades and centuries to be with their true loves.

In other cases, time-traveling characters journey through the years with their love interests. Sometimes they change history together. And sometimes, time travelers end up unknowingly doting on a family member! (We call that Back to the Future Syndrome.)

Here are our picks for the best time-travel romances on television — and no, HBO’s version of The Time Traveler’s Wife is not one of them . A word of caution, though: Spoilers abound, and as far as we know, there’s no way to rewind time to un-read them.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy

Netflix

This superhero series introduces decades-spanning romances when Viktor ( Elliot Page ) strikes up a romance with Sissy ( Marin Ireland ) and Klaus (Robert Sheehan) falls for Dave (Cody Ray Thompson) after the two super-powered characters travel to the 1960s.

Doctor Who

The shape-shifting Time Lord of this long-running sci-fi drama (played by various actors) has companions but not really companions , though River Song ( Alex Kingston ) becomes his wife in a timeline-repairing wedding. They even spend a 24-year night on the planet Darillum together!

Lost

This hit castaway drama features characters traveling through time, either physically or mentally. And Season 4’s “The Constant” sends Desmond ( Henry Ian Cusick ) on a decade-skipping head trip, leading to a phone call with Penny ( Sonya Walger ) that probably ranks as the most romantic moment of the series.

12 Monkeys

Fans of this sci-fi drama — based loosely on the 1995 film of the same name — shipped the couple dubbed Casserole. That’d be James Cole ( Aaron Stanford ), a time traveler from the future, and Cassandra Railly ( Amanda Schull ), the current-day virologist who helps him try to thwart a global outbreak.

Someday or One Day

Someday or One Day

In this Taiwanese drama, Yu-hsuan (Ko Chia-yen) is still mourning the death of boyfriend Chuan-sheng (Greg Hsu) when she is transported two decades in the past and finds a boy who looks exactly like him. And it’s a Walkman that triggers her time-traveling — talk about a plot device!

Dark

A wormhole in the cave system under a German town’s nuclear power plant fractures this sci-fi series’ storyline into several decades: the 2050s, 2010s, the 1980s, the 1950s, the 1920s, and the 1880s. Romance abounds, though, which leads to some weird and paradoxical relationships: One character dates his own aunt, for example, while another character’s mother is also her daughter.

Primeval

Dinosaurs aren’t the only ones in the wrong timeframe in this series. Matt ( Ciarán McMenamin ), an Anomaly Research Centre researcher from the future, and Emily (Ruth Bradley), a team member from the Victorian Era, bridge a centuries-long gap with their romance.

Manifest

When Montego Air Flight 828 lands five and a half years late — the travel delay from hell! — its passengers have to adjust to an unfamiliar world. And one of the biggest shocks is that, for some of them, their significant others are now involved with other people.

11.22.63

This Stephen King adaptation stars James Franco as Jake, an English teacher assigned to travel to 1963 and prevent John F. Kennedy ’s assassination. In that decade, he finds an ally — and a romantic prospect — in librarian Sadie (Sarah Gadon). Eventually, he tells Sarah everything, and they work together to alter history forever.

Goodnight Sweetheart

Goodnight Sweetheart

Over a six-year run in the 1990s — and a TV special in 2016 — this sitcom chronicled the double life of TV repairman Gary ( Nicholas Lyndhurst ) as a portal lets him toggle between the 1940s and the present day. In the former timeframe, he’s dating Phoebe ( Dervla Kirwan , then Elizabeth Carling ). In the latter, he’s married to Yvonne (Michelle Holmes and Emma Amos). That still qualifies as cheating in our books!

Journeyman

How does a guy prove to his skeptical wife he’s a time traveler? In the case of San Francisco reporter Dan Vassar ( Kevin McKidd ), he buries her wedding ring in the backyard in the past and digs it up in the present. But then there’s that pesky fact that his ex-fiancée, Livia ( Moon Bloodgood ), is traveling through time, too…

A Discovery of Witches

A Discovery of Witches

AMC+

In this adaptation of a Deborah Harkness book series, present-day witch Diana ( Teresa Palmer ) unwittingly brings fellow witches, daemons, and a dashing vampire named Matthew ( Matthew Goode ) to her doorstep. As you might expect, Diana and Matthew form a bond in Season 1. As you might not expect, they travel back to 1590 in Season 2.

Life on Mars

Life on Mars

You know you’re not watching any old British cop show when the main character is hit by a car and sent from 2006 to 1973. And that timeframe is when detective Sam Tyler ( John Simm ) develops a relationship with the skeptical but sympathetic constable Annie Cartwright (Liz White).

Timeless

This adventure series follows a Lifeboat team tasked with recovering a time machine from a fugitive (played by Goran Višnjić ) who develops feelings for Lifeboat leader Lucy ( Abigail Spencer ). Lucy. however, only has eyes for teammate Wyatt ( Matt Lanter )… though their timeline-meddling results in her engagement to another man!

Outlander

A World War II nurse mysteriously travels two centuries in the past, where she meets a Highland warrior who will become her true love. This hit show, an adaptation of Diana Gabaldon ’s historical fantasy novel series, has countless fans swooning for, shipping, and fanficcing Claire ( Caitríona Balfe ) and Jamie ( Sam Heughan ).

Kate Kavanagh

Time travel romance novels are an enchanting genre that intertwines the wonder of adventuring through time with the exhilarating journey of falling in love across different eras. These stories often feature protagonists who find themselves transported to a different period, where they encounter love that transcends the boundaries of known physics. The genre combines historical and contemporary elements, delivering a rich tapestry of romance, adventure, and often, the quest to reconcile different worlds.

Among the most beloved time travel romance novels are the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, which follows 20th-century nurse Claire Randall, who's mysteriously swept back to 18th-century Scotland where she meets the dashing Jamie Fraser; and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, a poignant tale of a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to uncontrollably travel through time, yet he maintains an enduring romance.

These novels - and many others like them - have seized the hearts of readers with their imaginative plots and unforgettable characters. Which time travel romance book is (or could be) your favorite?

Outlander

Outlander is an epic historical romance and time-travel adventure that follows Claire Randall, a WWII combat nurse mysteriously transported from 1945 to 18th-century Scotland after visiting a stone circle. Struggling to navigate a treacherous new world, she meets James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser (AKA Jamie Fraser), a dashing and honorable Highland warrior.

Despite her initial desire to return to her own time, Claire becomes entangled in the Jacobite uprisings and develops a profound and passionate love for Jamie. Together, they face political intrigue, warfare, and personal sacrifices, grappling with the conflicts between their desires and duties. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and the complexities of bridging two very different worlds.

Timeless

In this installment of Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series, Alexia Tarabotti (AKA Lady Maccon) is settling into her domestic life, which includes integrating werewolves into London high society and dealing with her young daughter, who has supernatural powers. When Alexia receives a summons from Alexandria, Egypt, she embarks on the journey with her family and friends. In Egypt, she discovers mysteries surrounding the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive, the God-Breaker Plague, and the sudden rise to fame of actress Ivy Tunstell.

Somewhere in Time

Somewhere in Time

A novel that elicits strong emotions and provides a romantic and engaging story that transcends time, Somewhere in Time 's unique storytelling method, attention to detail, and ability to draw the reader into the time period (late 19th-century California) are highlighted as strengths by reviewers.

While some readers may find the romantic elements touching and believable, others feel they delve too deeply into obsession and possessiveness. The portrayal of time travel and the unresolved ending leave an impact on readers, sparking introspection and emotional engagement. Despite minor criticisms of certain scenes, the book is still able to immerse readers in a captivating and sentimental love story.

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden

The Rose Garden follows Eva Ward as she leaves California and returns to Cornwall, England, to scatter the ashes of her sister Katrina at their childhood home. While at Trelowarth House, Eva experiences a mysterious ability to travel through time to the 18th century, where she meets the Butler brothers and becomes entangled in historical events. The story weaves between past and present as Eva faces her feelings for Daniel Butler and grapples with decisions about where she truly belongs, ultimately culminating in a surprising twist at the book's conclusion.

The Winter Sea

The Winter Sea

In The Winter Sea , author Carrie McClelland finds inspiration for her historical novel about the Jacobite rebellion of 1708 when she stays in a cottage near Slains Castle in Scotland. As she delves deeper into her research, she begins to experience a connection to her ancestor, Sophia Paterson, whose story she is writing. The Winter Sea deftly weaves between the past and the present, creating a captivating tale of love, history, and the mysteries of ancestral memory. Kearsley has been praised for creating rich historical detail, compelling characters, and the intricate way in which the two storylines intersect.

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife is a poignant love story that revolves around an unlikely but devoted couple. Henry DeTamble has a rare genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unexpectedly; his artist wife Clare Abshire must cope with his frequent absences. Niffenegger wrote the story as a metaphor for her failed relationships, with the central relationship between Henry and Clare serving as the novel's focal point. The Time Traveler's Wife has been praised for its unique perspective on time travel, blending elements of science fiction and romance to explore themes of love, loss, and the complexities of human connection.

The Steamy Time Travel Drama Everyone's Binging On Netflix

Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan lying on the grass

Contains minor spoilers for  Outlander

In the wake of  Bridgerton 's success, television fans are seeking out other steamy historical romances to watch while they wait for Season 2 of the Netflix series . One such series that has folks glued to the couch in a binge-watching haze is Starz' addictive time-traveling romance Outlander , the fourth season of which just hit Netflix at the end of January.

The show, which premiered in 2014 and is based on a series of lengthy fantasy-romance novels by author Diana Gabaldon, stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall, a former World War II nurse who, while on vacation in Scotland with her historian husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), travels back in time from 1945 to 1743 via a mysterious stone circle at Craigh na Dun. Claire initially struggles to survive in the past, and is nearly assaulted soon after arriving, but she is saved by a rugged Highlander by the name of Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). He and his men are on the run from the depraved Captain "Black Jack" Randall (also Menzies), who turns out to be one of Frank's ancestors.

Trapped in the past with no means of escaping that she can see, Claire at least makes great use of her nursing skills, properly diagnosing illnesses and saving lives with her advanced medical training. She is eventually forced to marry Jamie out of necessity, an event that results in a very steamy wedding night which,  much like those steamy scenes in Bridgerton , is also portrayed through the female gaze. Before long, she actually falls in love with the man, though he doesn't always make it easy. Because she also still loves her husband Frank, Claire spends a great deal of time strung out across the time-travely love triangle.

Outlander is more than just a steamy romance

If you love complicated, layered romances, Outlander is definitely the series for you. However, it's also much, much more than that. The show, which has been renewed through at least Season 6 and holds an 89% fresh rating on review aggregator   Rotten Tomatoes , merges its sexy brand of romance with fantasy elements (Claire's mysterious ability to travel through time via the stones) and a close attention to historical detail to create a one-of-a-kind genre blend that will keep you riveted for hours.

For instance, Claire regularly uses her knowledge of the future, including the failed Jacobite rebellion at Culloden, a major plot point early in the show, to attempt to change history. It takes some time to convince Jamie that she's actually from the future and not a lunatic, but eventually she succeeds, and the couple travel to France in Season 2 in an attempt to thwart the Jacobites by infiltrating the movement and preventing the battle of Culloden from ever occurring.

Meanwhile, time travel remains a confusing, if vital, part of the show. It is eventually revealed that Claire is not the only person who has made a trip through time. To say much more would be to spoil several key plot points and reveals, which we won't do. We will mention, however, that as the series progresses, the story takes its heroine all over the world  — season 3 finds her in the Caribbean, while season 4 takes her to the American colonies to witness some of the messed up things that happened in colonial times . But one thing remains the same amid the rapid motion of the convoluted plot and shifting locations: Claire's love for and dedication to Jamie. It is the one thing that not even time and distance can change.

Check it out for yourself, now streaming on Netflix.
