Covered Wagon Tours is an experience of Adventure, Entertainment, and Delicious BBQ. The Good Old Days are still here!

Hop aboard for a one-of-a-kind western adventure and Sonoran Desert Eco Tour. Ride into scenic canyons that are part of a 32,000-acre oasis wilderness preserve. This is all from the comfort of our open-air, Covered Wagons! Your naturalist guide and wagon driver will entertain and expound on the plant life, wildlife, Native American and Pioneer History and the geology of this “San Andreas Fault” created wilderness. A guided nature walk is also included and optional!

Entertainment

Return to camp with the smell of dinner cooking and to live-western music. Enjoy the sounds of classic American Cowboy Country, desert- folklore originals and sweet campfire songs. Continue the fun, with a line dance and or our old-fashioned partner dance, known as, “The Barn Dance”! This is a favorite amongst our guests! If you suffer with two left feet, and dance is not for You, then try your luck at a game of horseshoes, cornhole or cowboy style roping.

Experience the glow of the desert sun sinking behind the San Jacinto Mountains while enjoying a catered chuckwagon- style BBQ dinner. Indulge in Smoked Brisket or Tri-Tip, BBQ Chicken, served with all the classic trimmings. Guests are welcome to sit inside our desert-style barn or outside, along the desert’s edge of our scenic, Sonoran patio. After dinner, enjoy seasonal pie with whipped cream. Round off the evening, roasting marshmallows beside a glowing campfire, under a stary sky.

Review of: Covered Wagons Tour

Our family had an absolutely fantastic time on the covered wagon adventure and BBQ. The covered wagon ride was so much fun and allowed for some amazing views of the surrounding desert and Oasis. The live music and dancing were SO MUCH fun!! The cowboy style meal was delicious. This was a truly unique and entertaining experience that I would highly recommend.

Today was so much fun! Loved so many things. The Lemonade, Hot Chocolate , brisket and PIE! A brand new experience seeing the "story" that is the desert. Overarching all of this is the quality Owners and Staff. Personable, welcoming, helpful and generous.

The food was really good

The food was really good, the history about the Wild West and cowboys was great. John Hemp the singer had a gray selection of songs. Annie's Wild West show with whips and ropes and guns was fabulous. Lots of fun and there is desert!!

We chose to take the Legends & Icons Tour...and we’re so fortunate to get Annette as our guide. She was terrific! Very knowledgeable about the history of the area and full of information on the fascinating lives of the celebrities that called it home. Annette went above and beyond, making stops along the way...and made the whole experience entertaining and interesting for all of the age groups we had on board! During your encounter, you’ll step into an exclusive animal care area to meet one of the magnificent rhinos in our care, Nia or Jaali, and learn about their biology, care, and personalities while engaging in memorable activities like feeding or brushing.

The encounter lasts approximately 30 minutes and begins promptly at the reserved start time. Please note, it is a 10-minute walk to the encounter area from the Zoo’s main entrance.

Please be sure to arrive on time , as we cannot accommodate entrance into the encounter space 10 or more minutes after the encounter start time.

Will this be a private experience?

Does the rhino encounter ticket count as my admission to the living desert.

The Rhino Encounter fee does not include admission to The Living Desert – a valid admission ticket or membership is required for entry into the Zoo for the date of your encounter.

Can I get a refund on the experience?

The Rhino Encounter is non-refundable.

Is there an age requirement for this experience?

What if it’s raining on the day of my experience.

This experience will be held rain or shine.

What are the Rhino Encounter policies?

The Living Desert reserves the right to cancel or modify the Rhino Encounter due to animal health and/or safety concerns. In the event of a cancellation, efforts will be made to reschedule.

All participants must follow the instructions from animal care and staff members. Failure to follow instructions may result in removal from the Rhino Encounter without refund.

All participants must be in good health and free from any cold-like symptoms.

Is this an accessible activity?

ECVs (Electric Conveyance Vehicles are not permitted to enter the Rhino Encounter space. Participants must be able to transfer into a wheelchair, walk by themselves, or be assisted by a member of their party. Courtesy wheelchair(s) will be available.

Can I have my service animal?

There is limited access for service animals during the encounter. Please call 760-346-5694 for more information.

What is the allergy information for this experience?

This tour visits animal areas containing common allergens including but not limited to hay, grasses, dust, and biting/stinging insects.

Booking and Cancellation Policy for Private Safari Tours: Giraffe feeding included in Private Safari tour price (2-6 people only), but available as an add-on for Private Group Safari Tours. Tours must be booked at least 48 hours ahead of desired date and subject to availability. Tours begin at 9 am daily, October to May, and 8 am daily, June to September. Payment is due at the time of booking. If you need to cancel your tour, we ask that you do so at least seven days before your scheduled tour in order to receive a full refund. If you cancel within 7 days of your tour it is non-refundable.

Company History

Family owned and operated since 1988.

Desert Adventures was founded in 1988 to fulfill the growing need for exciting things to do in Palm Springs – other than play golf or tennis. Within four months of getting the idea of offering entertaining, educational jeep tours into the desert, Desert Adventures was born with an initial fleet of three used vehicles and a capacity of nine passengers. The tours were a success from the beginning, and by the second year the capacity had grown to 35 tour seats and clients were coming back for more!

Over the years, our jeep fleet has grown to 15 7-passenger Jeep Scramblers (CJ-8’s) and we can accommodate up to 105 people at a time on jeep tours (larger groups can be accommodated using multiple rounds).

Desert Adventures has continued to grow and today, Desert Adventures offers tours and events at our 800 acre private Metate Ranch on the San Andreas Fault as well as other areas around the valley.

For individuals and families, we offer jeep tours to the San Andreas Fault, Palm Springs Indian Canyons, and the Painted Canyon / Mecca Hills Wilderness Area. We also offer sightseeing tours to Joshua Tree National Park (conducted in a climate controlled van or SUV).

For groups, we offer jeep tours and rallies, sightseeing tours, and hiking tours throughout the valley as well as unique team building programs and corporate events, weddings and other special occasion celebrations at our Enchanted Desert and other Metate Ranch event venues.

Desert Adventures BIG RED JEEPS

Renowned for their history, Jeeps have carried soldiers into war and brought them safely back. They have carried missionaries into the deepest jungles in the world and they have carried millions of civilians far down the road less traveled. So what do you get when you combine that rich heritage with the functionality of a present-day SUV? Desert Adventures  BIG RED JEEPS !

Desert Adventures operates the largest fleet of Classic Jeep Scramblers (CJ-8s) in California. From an initial fleet consisting of three used vehicles with a capacity of nine passengers, Desert Adventures has grown to operate 15 customized Jeep Scramblers with a seating capacity of 105 guests at a time.

Each Jeep carries seven (7) passengers plus a naturalist guide/driver. All vehicles are equipped with fire extinguishers and first aid kits and are outfitted with safety features such as roll bars and seat belts for each occupant.

The Jeeps can be operated as open-air vehicles (shade top removed) or with the canvas top unfurled to provide sun protection.

Every vehicle starts its day with a thorough 14-point safety inspection and each vehicle receives regular servicing by our certified mechanic.

Two desert golf pros advance to National Professional championship

Scott Cherry of Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage and Dave Magdziasz of PGA West took the first steps toward a possible appearance in the 2025 PGA Championship with strong finishes at the PGA of Southern California Professional Championship on Wednesday.

Kyle Mendoza of Hacienda Golf Club in La Habra Heights won his third SCPGA Professional Championship and in the process earned a berth into The American Express PGA Tour event in La Quinta in January.

Cherry and Magdziasz finished among the top 11 scores and ties of the SCPGA event, advancing them to the 2025 PGA of America National Professional Championship. The top 20 golfers from that event, featuring club professionals and teachers from all 44 national sections of the PGA, will play in the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

Cherry finished the three-day event tied for sixth at 1-under 212, including rounds of 72, 68 and 72.  Cherry had fallen out of a National Professional berth earlier in the round by playing his first 16 holes in 3-over par, but he birdied the 17th and 18th holes to clinch his berth.

Magdziasz, who works at the resort courses at PGA West, finished in a six-way tie for eighth at even-par 212. Unlike Cherry, Magdziasz stumbled down the stretch, playing his last four holes in 3-over including one bogey and one double bogey. But two closing pars were enough for him to retain the national berth.

Nate Williams of the Hideaway Golf Club in La Quinta finished one shot out of a national berth with a 54-hole score of 1-over 214 despite rallying with a 68 Wednesday.

The tournament was played at Hillcrest Country Club and Rancho Park Golf Course, both in Los Angeles and both par-71s, with golfers playing each of the courses the first two days and Hillcrest in the third round.

Mendoza previously won the championship of the Southern California section of the PGA of America in 2020 and 2021. He finished with a 67 on Wednesday for a three-day total of 11-under 202. Michael Block, himself a three-time winner of the SCPGA title, was second at 206.

The winner of the championship earns a berth in the 156-player field of The American Express, which is played within the Southern California section. The winner also receives a berth in the Monday qualifying tournament for the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship to be played in November in Mexico. Second place also gets a Monday qualifying berth for the Mexico tournament.

Mendoza missed the cut in the 2022 American Express, finishing three rounds at 7-over 223.
