The best places to visit in Cyprus: from Aphrodite's rock to Adonis' bath
Nov 5, 2021 • 6 min read
How the ancients lived after death in the Tombs of the Kings © Hans-Peter Merten / Getty Images
In the eastern reaches of the balmy Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus offers an incredible blend of ancient archeological sites, icon-filled monasteries and historic houses of worship, all set against a backdrop of black pine forest and beach-fringed turquoise seas.
Whether you’re a beach basker, a scenery seeker, a fan of Greek mythology or just someone who loves learning about how people lived in ancient times, this island nation won’t disappoint. Here are twelve of the best places to visit in Cyprus.
Adonis Baths Waterfalls
Situated in the village of Kili (Koili) near Pafos , the Adonis Baths provide a lovely alternative to beachfront swimming, offering cool waters that cascade down into a large pool surrounded by forest. According to legend, Aphrodite and her consort, Adonis, spent a considerable amount of time at this bath, and some believe it to be a veritable fountain of youth.
However, most people come here just to cool off on sweltering summer days, and there’s a rope swing for those who want to make a dramatic entry into the waters.
Agios Neophytos Monastery
One of the best-known monasteries on the island, Agios Neophytos is a striking structure, featuring a rocky facade carved into the side of a mountain, over 500 meters above sea level. Today the monastery offers a mix of beautiful architecture and gorgeous icons, and many of the well-preserved frescoes here were created between the 12th and 15th centuries. It's inland from Pafos, on the edge of the Agios Neophytos Forest; on the way, you can detour to curious, cat-filled Tala Monastery .
Agios Lazaros (The Church of Saint Lazarus)
Dating back to the 9th century, this Orthodox church in Larnaka is known both for its beautifully preserved Byzantine architecture and for housing the tomb of Saint Lazarus, of Bible fame. The limestone exterior is photo-worthy all by itself, but it's worth spending time exploring the interior, not only to view the risen saint's tomb, but also to check out the gilded baroque iconostasis that adorns the church’s shadowy interior.
Hala Sultan Tekkesi
On the banks of the Larnaka Salt Lake, Hala Sultan Tekkesi is a striking mosque and Sufi shrine that was built over the centuries and finally completed in 1817. It was constructed around the tomb of Umm Haram, an aunt and companion of the Prophet Mohammed. Along with a mosque and shrine, the complex features a series of landscaped courtyards with views out over the saline lake.
Today, it's a quiet monument to Cyprus' pre-partition past. While the architecture and peaceful ambiance are reason enough to visit, many people just come to the complex to say hello to the hundred-odd stray cats who call the Hala Sultan Tekkesi home.
Choirokoitia
The Unesco World Heritage-listed Choirokoitia archaeological site is one of the most significant Neolithic sites in the region, and digs here have helped archaeologists get a better grasp on how people lived in the 7th to 4th millennia BCE.
While only part of the site has been excavated so far, there's still plenty for visitors to see and experience. The most interesting feature is a collection of reconstructions of prehistoric dwellings that have been decked out with replicas of household items that were used in Neolithic times.
Pafos Archaeological Site
Spread out by the sea near the center of Pafos , this spectacular complex includes some of the most impressive archaeological sites on the island. It's like an open-air museum, with plenty of best-on-the-island highlights, including an ancient odeon (theater) that is used for performances to this day.
There are also four Roman villas that house a stunning collection of beautifully preserved floor mosaics. The most impressive is the House of Dionysus, whose ornate mosaic floors portray Dionysus, the god of wine, aboard a panther-drawn chariot.
The Painted Churches of Troödos
The Unesco World Heritage-listed painted churches of the Troödos mountains have hardly changed since Byzantine times. These crude stone and timber chapels were filled with amazing murals of saints, archangels and Bible scenes between the 11th and 16th centuries, and the colors shine as brightly today as they did when they were painted. If time is short, make a beeline for the churches of Panagia Forviotissa (near Nikitari) and Archangelos Michail (in Pedoulas).
Kolossi Castle
West of Lemesos (Limassol), close to the southern coast of Cyprus, stocky Kolossi Castle was used as a stronghold during the Crusades. The castle was occupied by the mysterious Knights Templar during their reign on the island, and it was here that they first produced a type of sweet, fortified wine known as Commandaria, now celebrated as the world's oldest continually produced named wine.
Kykkos Monastery
High up in the mountainous interior, west of Pedoulas, Kykkos Monastery is home to a museum showcasing some of the most impressive icons on the island, alongside ancient reliquaries and other votive objects. Kykkos was established in the 11th century after a hermit healed the daughter of the Byzantine emperor at the time, Alexios I Komnenos.
The hermit was rewarded with a sacred icon of the Virgin Mary and the funds to build a monastery to enshrine it. The icon is kept at the monastery to this day, albeit shrouded, as it's believed that anyone who looks upon its beauty will go blind.
Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou)
Situated on the southern coast of Cyprus, between Lemesos and Pafos, this rock formation and beach is believed to be where Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, emerged from the sea. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction, and while the beach pales in comparison to the sandier spots in nearby Pafos, it's an undeniably scenic spot. According to legend, if you swim around the rock three times, you'll find your true love – just be careful as the sea here can be rough at times.
Tombs of the Kings
In the southwest corner of the island, on the outskirts of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings is an ancient necropolis comprising rock-hewn tombs dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Here you’ll find a sprawl of sunken graves and underground chambers, some crude and some regal and refined.
Many of the tombs resemble ancient homes, complete with beautifully carved Doric pillars. Although excavation is still in progress, visitors are welcome to explore the tombs on foot, descending rock-hewn steps and passageways into the ancient chambers below.
Ancient Kourion
Between Lemesos and Pafos, the ancient Roman and Hellenistic site of Kourion has one of the most impressive settings in the Mediterranean, perched atop a rocky hillside above an undeveloped shingle beach. The site has everything from the ruins of an early Christian basilica and a Roman theater and bathhouse to ancient villas full of mosaics and crude, rock-cut tombs at the base of the cliffs.

Safety and Security
U.N. Buffer Zone:
- Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to enter the United Nations buffer zone at any place other than a designated crossing point.
- Never photograph military installations or anything that could be perceived as being of a security interest. Pay particular attention to areas marked with “no photography” signs. Police on both sides of the island strictly enforce these restrictions .
Terrorism: Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting possible near-term attacks in Europe. All European countries remain potentially vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations. Terrorist groups, including their associates, and those inspired by such organizations, are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack -- including edged weapons, pistols, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:
- High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
- Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
- Places of worship
- Shopping malls and markets
- Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)
For more information, see our Terrorism page.
Crime: Cyprus generally has low crime rates.
- Be alert and always aware of your surroundings and of your personal belongings. Criminals often target those who are distracted, alone in an isolated area, or impaired.
- Do not leave any valuables unattended or out in public view.
- Avoid so-called “night clubs” (topless bars), as they reportedly employ women trafficked to Cyprus for sexual exploitation. Night clubs have presented foreign patrons with grossly-inflated bar tabs, threatening customers who refuse to pay.
- Claims that make it appear you are helping a loved one or a friend who has been injured or is in trouble
- Online dating/social networking services
- Inheritance notices
- Work permits/job offers
- Bank overpayments
See the Department of State and the FBI pages for information on scams.
Victims of Crime:
U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy for assistance.
Report crimes to the local police by dialing 112 and contact the U.S. Embassy by dialing 22-393939 . Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.
See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

- See traveling safely abroad for useful travel tips.
Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .
Local Laws & Special Circumstances
Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business. Possession of a U.S. passport will not prevent you from being detained, prosecuted, or imprisoned.
Furthermore, some crimes are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.
Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our webpage for further information.
Faith-Based Travelers: See our following webpages for details:
- Faith-Based Travel Information
- International Religious Freedom Report – see country reports
- Human Rights Report – see country reports

- Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad
Travel in the Area Administered by Turkish Cypriots:
- See Entry, Exit, and Visa Requirements above.
- The Embassy’s ability to provide assistance to you in this area is limited.
- Immigration officials at Larnaca Airport have occasionally turned around non-EU citizens who announce their intention to stay in hotels or villas determined by the Republic of Cyprus to be on land belonging to displaced Greek Cypriots. For more information on this issue and a full list of such properties, visit the webpage of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in the United States.
- Car insurance purchased in the government-controlled area is not valid in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots. If you travel north of the UN buffer zone, you must have separate car insurance that can be purchased at the crossing points.
LGBTI Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in the Republic of Cyprus or in the area administered by the Turkish Cypriots. Despite broad legal protections, LGBTI individuals sometimes face societal discrimination and few are open about their sexual orientation or gender identity. Although public attitudes tend to be socially conservative in Cyprus, the U.S. Embassy has not received reports of violence against LGBTI travelers.
See our LGBTI travel information page and section six of our Human Rights Report for further details.
Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:
- The People with Disabilities Law mandates that public buildings and tourist facilities built after 1999 be accessible to all.
- Older buildings frequently lack access for persons with disabilities.
- Narrow or nonexistent sidewalks and lack of transport, parking spaces, accessible toilets, and elevators all pose problems for persons with disabilities.
- Republic of Cyprus law prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities in employment, education, access to health care, or in the provision of other state services.
- For information on accessible travel in Cyprus, visit the Accessible Cyprus page of the Cyprus tourist office website.
Students: See our students abroad page and FBI travel tips .
Women Travelers: See our travel tips for women travelers .
We do not pay medical bills, and U.S. Medicare does not pay overseas claims.
Medical Insurance: Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas . Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments . See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage overseas.
We strongly recommend obtaining supplemental insurance for medical evacuation.
If traveling with prescription medication , check with the Republic of Cyprus to ensure the medication is legal in Cyprus. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. You should similarly confirm with authorities in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots to ensure any medication you are carrying will not present problems. The police there can be contacted at 00903922283411 and the “Drug and Pharmacy Office” at 00903922284156 or 00903922284001.
Be aware that the dry air on the island may aggravate respiratory ailments and allergies .
Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Further health information:
- World Health Organization
- U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Travel and Transportation
Road Conditions and Safety: While in Cyprus, you may encounter road conditions that differ significantly from those in the United States, though modern motorways link the major cities.
- Traffic moves on the left side of the road – the opposite direction most U.S. citizens are used to. Pedestrians should be extra careful and look both ways before crossing roads.
- Secondary roads, especially in mountainous areas, tend to be narrow and winding, and not as well maintained as major highways.
- Speeding, tailgating, overtaking, and the running of caution lights, though illegal, are common and are major causes of accidents.
- Road safety conditions in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots are similar to conditions in the south, except that the road network is less developed.
- Insurance purchased in the government-controlled area is not valid in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots , but insurance for that area may be purchased at the UN buffer zone checkpoints.
Traffic Laws:
- Traffic laws, signs, and speed limits are consistent with the standards used throughout Europe.
- The use of seat belts (in front seats) and child car seats is mandatory .
- The use of cellular phones while driving is prohibited unless used with some form of hands-free kit.
- Motorcyclists are required to wear helmets .
- You must have liability insurance .
Public Transportation: There are few public buses and no rail lines in Cyprus. Taxis are widely available.
See our road safety page for more information, as well as the website of Cyprus’ national tourist office .
Aviation Safety Oversight: As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Cyprus, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Republic of Cyprus’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .
Maritime Travel: Mariners planning to travel to Cyprus should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

As the main summer holiday season begins, the eastern Mediterranean is experiencing extreme temperatures – together with the outbreak of wildfires in western Cyprus .
High temperatures, typically reaching 43C in Cyprus, are expected to continue through the weekend.
Firefighters are struggling to respond to a blaze near the popular resort of Paphos, with high winds and tough terrain making the fire difficult to control. Specialist teams have flown in from Greece and Jordan.
Some inland villages have been evacuated and roads closed, with concern that smoke could disrupt Paphos airport – though this has not happened so far.
Further east, the Greek mainland and islands are once again experiencing extreme heat , with particular concern about the effects of high temperatures on vulnerable local residents and travellers.
Last July, around 20,000 holidaymakers were evacuated from Rhodes due to severe wildfires .
These are the key questions and answers.
What is happening?
The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus has issued an “ extreme maximum temperature warning ” for Friday 14 June 2024. It warns that the inland maximum temperature is expected to rise as high as 44C, with a temperature of 34C even in the mountains.
An “orange weather warning” is in place from 11am to 5pm.
The Greek Met Office has also issued an emergency weather bulletin, warning of temperatures of up to 43C in the eastern Peloponnese and up to 42C in Crete and the Dodecanese islands. Athens could reach 42C.
Is it safe to go to the region?
For most travellers who take steps to stay in the shade, avoid direct sunshine during the day, and maintain hydration, there is no particular reason not to travel.
The UK government highlights travellers who are particularly vulnerable:
- older people aged over 65 years
- people with underlying health conditions, particularly heart problems, breathing problems, dementia, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease or mobility problems
- people who are already ill and dehydrated (for example from stomach ailments)
Any Foreign Office warnings?
On Cyprus, the Foreign Office says: “Wildfires are dangerous and unpredictable. Take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas.”
For Greece, the official advice is: “Be cautious if you are in or near an area affected by wildfires. You should:
- follow the guidance of the emergency services
- call the Greek Emergency Services on 112 if you are in immediate danger
- contact your airline or travel operator who can assist you with return travel to the UK”
Does that mean holidaymakers are being evacuated?
No. Exactly the opposite. At Heraklion, the main airport of Crete, dozens of planes are flying in on schedule from the UK and other western European nations on Friday.
The same applies at Paphos airport. The visitors will certainly feel the heat when they step off the aircraft, but there is no disruption at present. Roads to all the key resort locations remain open.
But parts of Cyprus are off limits?
Yes, but it is unlikely that tourists will be directly affected by the closures.
I am anxious about travelling to the region. Can I cancel without penalty?
Probably not. Under the Package Travel Regulations, holidaymakers can cancel for a refund “if unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances occur at the place of destination or its immediate vicinity which significantly affect the performance of the package or the carriage of passengers to the destination”.
The high temperatures and localised wildfires do not (yet) constitute “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances” that could affect holidays.
Usual terms will apply: for imminent departures, cancellations are likely to result in the loss of the total cost of the holiday. It can, though, be transferred to other people for a nominal fee.
Holiday companies may also be prepared to show some flexibility, with the option to switch to destinations where they have spare capacity.
Will travel insurance help?
Possibly, if you have declared a pre-existing medical condition that would clearly be exacerbated by the unusually hot weather.
Would you travel to the region?
Yes, if I had a booking – though I prefer to visit the eastern Mediterranean in April, May, September and October.

Key Takeaways. TUESDAY, June 11, 2024 (HealthDay News) -- Astronauts orbiting the Earth tend to suffer from immune system problems such as infections and the reactivation of dormant viruses, even on short-term space flights. That appears to be because a lack of gravity causes the immune system to go awry during space travel, a new study has found.
