HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M1

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M1 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

Traffic chaos as truck fire shuts lanes on M1 Pacific Mwy, Mount Ku-ring-gai

A truck fire on a major motorway north of Sydney led to long queues on Saturday afternoon.

The vehicle was carrying a speedway car at the time, and fire crews were called to the M1 Pacific Mwy at Mount Ku-ring-gai at about 1pm.

The driver was not required to be assessed by paramedics.

Photos from the 7NEWS helicopter showed heavy traffic banked up as two of three southbound lanes have been closed.

By Saturday evening one southbound lane had reopened.

Live M1 updates as long traffic queues form after crash northbound at Junction 31

A n accident in the M1 in north Nottinghamshire has caused delays to traffic. Lanes closures are in place on the M1 northbound at junction 31, near Worksop , on Sunday, November 19.

A crash has caused delays on the M1 northbound and northbound access road at junction 31. There is one of four lanes closed on the M1 due to the incident.

On the northbound access road, there are one of two lanes closed. In an initial statement, Motorway Cameras said: “There is one of four lanes closed. Normal traffic conditions are expected between 16:15 and 16:30 on 19 November 2023.”

M1 traffic live: Updates on long queues after girl, 18, 'hit by vehicle' dies on major London motorway

The M1 is expected to be closed for some time

An eighteen-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car on a major motorway. The woman, who's age has not been confirmed, collided with a vehicle while on foot at the junction 3 southbound entry slip road on the M1 on Tuesday evening (February 28).

Police were called shortly before 6.50pm and rushed to the scene along with London Ambulance Service (LAS) paramedics. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating what happened. Extensive road closures remain in place and there have been no arrests.

On Wednesday morning (March 1) the Southbound carriageway remains closed, with traffic queuing back for seven miles. Congestion is as far back at Junction 6 for North Watford, with A41 queues from Junction 5 (Watford) to Apex Corner. There are A1 queues from Borehamwood to Mill Will and there are knock on M25 delays at Junction 23 back to Junction 22 London Colney and Junction 24 Potters Bar.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Officers were called shortly before 6.50pm on Tuesday, February 28 to reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian near to the junction 3 southbound entry slip road on the M1.

"Police and other emergency services attended. Despite their best efforts, the pedestrian- a woman-no further details- was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing. Extensive road closures in place. No arrests."

A spokesperson for National Highways added: "The M1 south is closed between J4 Edgware and J1 at the A406 North Circular due to a police-led incident. Met Police are on the scene.

"Due to the nature of this incident we expect the road to remain closed throughout the night. National Highways have resources in attendance, assisting with traffic management."

Anyone who witnessed this incident or has dashcam footage is asked to call police on 101 and give reference 5695/28Feb.

All lanes have now been reopen follwing last night's collision on the M1, between a pedestrian and a vehicle.

Inrixz says: "All lanes open, earlier police incident on M1 Southbound between J4 A41 ( Edgware / Harrow) and J2 A1 (Fiveways Corner)."

One lane remains closed

One lane remains closed following last night's fatal incident.

Inrix states: "One lane closed and slow traffic due to recovery work and earlier Police incident on M1 between J4 A41 ( Edgware / Harrow) and J2 A1 (Fiveways Corner). Congestion to J5 Watford, also down the A1 from Stirling Corner to Mill Hill, and through Elstree. The M1 was closed down to Staples Corner from 7pm yesterday until just before 11am this morning. Lane one (of three) is still closed for a few yards at the scene, but not causing any issues."

Victim of crash was a pedestrian

Another concerned witness claims the victim who sadly died was a pedestrian, rather than driving a car herself.

The witness told MyLondon:

A bus narrowly avoided the woman but has also been caught up in the closure as the police try and gather as much evidence as possible.

Eyewitness account

An eyewitness at the scene told MyLondon:

I drove past the scene of the fatal pedestrian accident on the M1 near London Gateway services southbound, narrowly avoiding the person lying in the road [...] Very worrying.

Traffic queuing for 7 miles

Commuters are facing chaos this morning after last night's fatal crash on the M1, with traffic queuing for seven miles.

Woman dies at the scene of the crash on M1

A woman has died after being hit by a car on a major motorway. The woman, who's age has not been confirmed, collided with a vehicle while on foot at junction 3 southbound entry slip road on the M1 this evening (February 28).

Police were called shortly before 6.50pm and rushed to the scene along with London Ambulance Service. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating what happened. Extensive road closures remain in place and there have been no arrests.

The M1 southbound carriageway is likely to remain closed overnight. The incident shut the major road for at least four hours leaving hundreds stranded.

Awaiting details from the Met Police

MyLondon is still waiting for details about the exact nature of this incident, which has closed the M1. A spokesperson said the closure of the southbound carriageway is down to a collision. Details about any fatalities and the opening of the road are due back from the police service shortly.

The carriageway remains closed after the incident near London gateway services located between J4 and J2 on the M1.

Drivers face delays as carriageway remains closed

Drivers on the M1 are facing hours-long delays as the road as the Southboudn carriageway remains shut. One driver wrote on twitter: "What is going on!! It’s been 2 hours and we haven’t moved. Surely it doesn’t take this long to open up the road"

Someone else wrote: "I passed on other side. There's a tent up and lots of blue lights. I did see a police motorcycle diverting cars back up the motorway in one lane on that side. It's really tailing back too."

The exact nature of this incident has not been confirmed. MyLondon has contacted the emergency services for more information.

Both sides of the M1 have reopened following an earlier crash. The motorway was closed in both directions between J22 and J21A after a collision between three lorries.

The incident was first highlighted at around 5.45am. Police, fire crews and the ambulance service were at the scene. Leicestershire Police posted on X, formerly Twitter, to ask drivers to please use other routes. They said: "Due to a police incident there is a full road closure on the M1 southbound at junction 22. Please find alternative routes. Updates to follow."

Both sides of M1 reopened after earlier crash

Both sides of the M1 have now reopened following an earlier crash. The northbound side has fully reopened. On the southbound side, only one lane out of three is open to traffic and drivers have been warned to expect long delays on the approach.

Lorries recovered from motorway

All three lorries have been recovered from the M1 southbound after they were involved in a collision. The M1 remains closed following the incident which took place between junctions 22 and 21A.

Resurfacing works will be required to take place due to the damage to the road surface.. All lanes remain closed.

Lanes remain closed

All lanes remain closed on the M1 southbound between junctions 22 and 21A. Normal traffic conditions are now not expected until this afternoon.

On its website, Motorway Cameras stated: "All lanes are closed Normal traffic conditions are expected between 12:00 and 12:15 on 30 January 2024." The northbound side of the M1 has re-opened but was closed earlier today due to the incident.

All lanes remain closed on the M1

Following the earlier accident, all lanes on the M1 southbound remain closed. Three lorries are understood to have been involved in the accident.

Normal traffic conditions are expected between 11:30 and 11:45. The lanes are closed between junctions 22 and 21A.

Congestion on M1

There is currently congestion on the M1 following an earlier incident. Traffic is building on the M1 southbound between junctions 23 and 22.

This comes as all lanes remain closed on the southbound side of the motorway between junctions 22 and 21A due to an overturned vehicle. The southbound access to the M1 is also closed.

National Highways East Midlands update

The M1 remains closed southbound between Junctions 22 and 21A near Leicester. This follows a collision that involved three lorries.

Traffic caught within the closure is now also passing the scene using the third lane. Traffic is also being turned around from the rear of the queue.

Incident attended by emergency services

Due to the earlier incident a number of emergency services attended the scene. It has been reported that three lorries were involved in a collision on the M1.

This happened earlier this morning near Junction 22. Due to the nature of the incident, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service attended to assist in a multi-agency operation.

Traffic being released

Traffic is now being released between junctions 22 and 21A on the M1 Southbound. This comes after an earlier incident involving three lorries.

The Northbound side of the M1 has fully re-opened after having all lanes closed. Traffic caught within the closure is now being turned around from the rear of the queue.

M1 remains closed in both directions at junction 22

All lanes remain closed on the M1 northbound between junctions 21A and 22. All lanes also remain closed on the M1 southbound at the access at junction 22.

According to Motorway Cameras, normal conditions are expected around 08:45 following an overturned vehicle.

Traffic to be turned around

The latest from Highways England on this. Traffic stuck within the closure on the southbound carriageway is being turned around, from the rear of the queue, in a bid to get people going on their way.

As anticipated the A50 and A46 and just about any other route you could use to avoid this closure is pretty snarled up at the moment and it's only likely to get worse as more traffic gets on the network.

Nothing from any agency on the drivers involved in the collision or how long the road is anticipated to be shut for.

Long delays building

It's really tough on the M1 this morning. Today's incident follows two incidents in recent weeks that led to closures. Long delays are building in the area and are likely to spread as rush hour approaches.

This stretch of the M1 in north Leicestershire is always busy with HGVs, with several huge distribution warehouses accessed off J22.

Google's traffic mapping service shows long queues building before the closures. If you can avoid the M1 this morning it might be a good move.

Collision involved three lorries

Highways England has shared more details about the incident. They say it involved three lorries, with one of the vehicles ending up on its side.

The decision to shut both carriageways was taken at 6.15am. They said: "At around 05:30 this morning Leicestershire Police and National Highways Traffic Officers responded to a multi-vehicle collision involving 3 heavy goods vehicles which resulted in one of the vehicles coming to land on its side.

"Due to the nature of the incident Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service are en route to assist in a multi-agency operation."

Road closed in both directions

The M1 was initially just shut southbound but Leicestershire Police now say it's shut in both directions now to enable the emergency services to work safely at the scene.

Full M1 diversion routes

Southbound road users are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs:.

• Leave the M1 southbound at J22 and at the roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A50.
• Follow the A50 eastbound to the A50/A46 interchange and at the roundabout take the 4th exit onto the A46.
• Continue on the A46 back to M1 J21A and merge with the M1 southbound to continue your journey.

Northbound road users are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs

• Exit the M1 northbound at J21a and using the free flow lane join the A46 northbound
• Continue northbound along the A46 to the A46/A50 interchange.
• At the interchange take the first exit (left) onto the A50 Markfield Road.
• Continue along the A50 passing through the Lena Drive junction, Bradgate Hill and Fieldhead Roundabouts to A50/M1 junction 22 interchange.
• At the interchange take the fourth exit and rejoin the M1 northbound
