Skiathos Greece sits in the Sporades archipelago in the northwest Aegean sea, off the east coast of Greece. The island is only small (It is 12 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide!).

However, within that small area, there are more than 60 beaches! There is something for everyone here – whether you are looking for quiet beaches in Skiathos and secluded coves where you can escape the crowds, or you are looking for serviced areas with local tavernas and all the amenities.

This article on the best beaches on Skiathos island has been written by a British Travel Writer based in Greece (me!) It will run through some of the top beaches in Skiathos, as well as some lesser-known hidden gems.

16 Best Beaches on Skiathos Island to Visit in 2024

Skiathos beaches

It can be overwhelming to decide which of the best beaches on Skiathos island to prioritise. If you are visiting Skiathos for the first time, it is definitely worthwhile visiting some of the most popular and famous beaches.

(You should see the beaches of Koukounaries and Lalaria at least once!) Meanwhile, If you are looking for more peaceful spots that exude desert island vibes, consider stopping by Diamandis beach and Katharina beach.

Another critical thing to consider is the time of year that you are traveling. Skiathos is the most popular island in the Sporades archipelago and it sees more and more tourists with every passing year.

It is known as “the boomerang Island” on account of the fact that so many people visit Skiathos, fall completely in love with it, and return again and again each following year.

That is understandable as Skiathos is beautiful. However, visiting the best beaches on Skiathos between late June and early September often means that some places are very crowded.

Sometimes, you may have to set out early in the morning in order to secure the best sunbed or patch of sand on some of the most crowded beaches. If your schedule allows, you may want to consider traveling to Skiathos slightly out of season.

For example, in May or in late September/early October. At this time, the temperatures are still warm and sunny and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

However, you see a fraction of the crowds. The other benefits of traveling at this time are that flights, excursions, car rentals , and accommodation prices are often cheaper.

You may even find the shoulder season temperatures preferable. Greece does get very hot during the summer months. (Think temperatures of 35°C and up).

Diamandis beach

Diamandis beach, Skiathos

Diamandis beach is a stunning stretch of coastline that is situated in the Kanapitsa region, on Skiathos island’s west coast. This intimate, secluded beach can only be accessed by following a narrow footpath that leads through the surrounding woodland.

During the summer months, one of the beach bars in Skiathos operates here and taxi boats run to the area from Skiathos town port. It is possible to rent a sunbed and an umbrella at Diamandis beach for just €10.

Diamandis is not the most easily accessible beach on the island and few people are aware of the woodland trail that leads you to it from the road. As such, it is often overlooked by a lot of visitors to Skiathos.

Out of season, you can come here and have the entire place to yourself. The beach is encompassed by dense pine forests and dramatic cliffs.

Vromolimnos beach

Skiathos beaches: Vromolimnos beach

Lovely Vromolimnos beach is situated in the southern part of Skiathos, some 8km away from the town. You can access the beach via a short, pleasant woodland walk from Kanapitsa, or from the nearby resort of Kolios.

This is perhaps one of the most naturally stunning beaches in Skiathos. Vromolimnos sits within a calm bay, backed by a pine forest. The clear, tranquil waters are perfect for swimming. The sand is fine and golden.

Vromolimnos is popular among the young and beautiful in Skiathos. During the summer months, the beach bars here serve an array of cocktails, snacks, and refreshments, and play out bass-thumping music.

Katharina beach

Best beaches in Skiathos: Katharina beach, Maratha

Katharina beach is a lesser-known area that is tucked away from view in the “Maratha” area of southwestern Skiathos. To reach it, you need to follow an overgrown woodland trail that veers off from the section of Skiathos ring road that connects Troulos and Koukounaries.

This little beach exudes real desert island paradise vibes – particularly if you travel before the peak summer months when it is completely empty. The cove is encompassed by dense woodland and unique rock formations.

The shallow waters here are clear, and shimmer beneath the sun in gorgeous shades of blue and green. Katharina beach is a little tricky to get to as the path is overgrown and not very easy to spot from the road.

There is some amount of clambering involved, and the path that leads down to the coast is quite steep. Fortunately, some helpful person has left a rope here to make getting to the beach easier. However, you should be careful if climbing down alone.

Kanapitsa “hidden” beach

"Hidden" beach of Kanapitsa

The Kanapitsa region has several gorgeous beaches that are never as crowded as some others on the island as they are a little trickier to get to. One to add to your radar is the “hidden” beach that awaits at the end of a private residential street.

First of all, don’t let the fact that the beach sits at the end of a private road deter you. The beach is not private property and it is publicly open to all.

Encompassed by craggy rocks and dramatic cliffs, the beach will have you feeling like Tom Hanks in Castaway! The clear turquoise waters here are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

You can swim around the coast here to a small rocky cove at Cape Kanapitsa that is inaccessible by foot. This is one of the best beaches on Skiathos if you like to escape the crowds.

Ligaries beach

Best beaches on Skiathos

The northern part of Skiathos island is altogether more wild and rugged than the south. This area is less developed and sees fewer visitors due to its distance from the main towns and resort areas.

Ligaries beach is a beautiful, long sandy stretch of coastline. Sunbed rentals are available here, and there is a little taverna situated on the lush green hillside where you can grab a bite to eat after a day’s swimming.

Ligaries beach is a little tricky to reach. An ill-maintained dirt trail brings you to the coast.

However, this is not ideal for driving along if you have a standard rental car. It is preferable to drive to the beach via quad bike or jeep or to hike here by following one of the designated Skiathos trails.

Tsougria Island

Tsougria is not a Skiathos beach, it is a little island nearby. However, it is worth mentioning here as it is one of the most breathtaking places in the Sporades, and a popular excursion from Skiathos town during the summer months.

Tsougria is an uninhabited island that sits off the southern coast of Skiathos, between Skiathos and Skopelos island . You can see its lush green landscapes as you look out to see from Megali Ammos, Kanapitsa, and other parts of the island’s south coast.

From June onwards, daily catamarans connect Skiathos with Tsougria. It is also possible to get here independently if you opt to rent your own boat.

The waters here are more reminiscent of something that you would expect to see in the Caribbean, rather than in Europe! Boats to Tsougria drop you off in the same place.

However, there is another beach that you can get to by walking through the woods which is well worth the effort. The quaint church of Agios Floros is a great place for photos – it is perched atop a cliff and offers stunning views over the Aegean sea.

Troulos Beach

Skiathos beaches: Troulos

Troulos beach is the namesake beach of Troulos resort town . This gorgeous blue flag coastal area is a convenient place to enjoy the sun and sea if you are staying close to Troulos during your time in Skiathos.

The name “Troulos” means “dome” in Greek. The beach takes its name from the uninhabited islet that can be seen from the shore which exists in the form of a church dome.

Troulos beach gets very busy between June and September. Yet the crowds do not detract from its charm.

Here you have all the amenities you need for a day at the beach. For instance, sunbed and water equipment rentals, a lifeguard on hand, and a range of excellent tavernas and bars nearby.

Lalaria Beach

Countless guidebooks, magazines, and travel media have referred to Lalaria beach as being one of Greece’s very best beaches. It can be found on the northeastern tip of the island and is only accessible via a boat trip from Skiathos port.

Boat trips cost upwards of €10 per person.

The unusual landscapes and rock formations here make Lalaria appear otherworldly and almost ethereal. Here, colossal white cliffs extend out from the sea forming unique shapes and a natural bridge arch.

There are no sunbeds or facilities on Lalaria. It can get busy with boat-tripping tourists during July and August. However, it is one of the most gorgeous natural paradises on the island.

If you choose to rent your own boat during your time on Skiathos, you can also sail out to the blue and dark caves nearby.

Agia Paraskevi Beach

Best beaches on Skiathos island

Agia Paraskevi beach is a stunning, crescent-moon-shaped bay that takes its name from the nearby Agia Paraskevi church. Both are very worthy of your time and attention.

Agia Paraskevi church is a tiny little stone church hidden beneath an abundance of poplar trees. Its interiors are adorned with beautiful, vibrant frescoes.

Churches in Greece that are named after a patron saint host celebrations on that Saint’s name day. The day of St Paraskevi takes place every year on the 27th of July.

On this day, a huge feast is held in the churchyard. Locals and churchgoers tuck into an array of sumptuous marinated meats, local wines, and Greek pastries . Do stop by if you find yourself on the island at this time.

The nearby church aside, Agia Paraskevi beach is one of the best beaches in Skiathos. Its waters are warm, inviting, and crystal clear. Its sands are fine, soft, and golden.

Sun loungers and equipment rentals are available here. So too, are watersports equipment items, boats, and jet skis.

This is an extremely popular beach during the Greek summer months and as such, it is often crowded. If you’re visiting Greek islands in October and onwards though, you will have gorgeous Agia Paraskevi almost entirely to yourself.

Kastro beach

Kastro beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches on the north coast of Skiathos. It is approximately 8.5km north of Skiathos town, and within walking distance of the Kastro historical site.

The beach isn’t on the bus route so if you do not have access to a vehicle, you will have to take a cab from the main port. Alternatively, nature lovers will love the scenic hiking trails that weave through the woodlands and olive groves in this more rugged part of the island.

However, do note, it takes approximately 2 hours to walk from Skiathos town to Kastro on foot in each direction. (So perhaps you can consider taking a taxi there and then walking back in the late afternoon).

You also need to navigate your way down a few steep steps to get to the shore. Still, the warm waters and soft sand that greets you here make it worth the effort.

There is a traditional tavern situated right by the coastline here. Here, you can indulge in Greek food favourites , fresh squid, and sumptuous seafood dishes prepared with the day’s latest catches.

As you sit on the little colorful wooden chairs here, you have unparalleled views of the sea, and you can watch as the blue waters of the Aegean lap against the shore. Aristotelis, the owner, and his wife are very hospitable and are always happy to chat with travellers about their time on Skiathos.

Megali Ammos beach

tourist map of skiathos beaches

Megali Ammos is one of the most well-known “city beaches” in Skiathos. This long, serviced sprawl is situated just over a mile away from the town and as such, it often gets very crowded in the high season.

The views out to sea from Megali Ammos are some of the best on the island. From here you can see Skopelos, Cape Kanapitsa, and the uninhabited island of Tsougria all in the distance.

Koukounaries Beach

Koukounaries beach is one of the best Skiathos beaches. However, with that, it is also one of the busiest.

Koukounaries is characterised by fine powdery white sand, crystal-clear waters, and pine forests. Not only is this stretch of coastline one of the most beloved in the Sporades, it was also recently recognised as being the best natural beach in the entire Mediterranean.

This area is very well organised. The seafront promenade is lined with tavernas and restaurants. There are also many hotels and accommodation options in the area.

Since the beach is often crowded, it may not be what everyone is looking for, particularly if you are looking for a peaceful Greek island retreat. If you prefer a calmer environment, head to Diamandis, or schedule your Skiathos trip for May or September, rather than July and August.

Tzaneria Beach (Sklithri)

Tzaneria beach is the first stretch of coastline you encounter when you enter the Kanapitsa Bay area of eastern Skiathos. A water taxi connects the beach with Skiathos town .

A pleasant way to spend a day is to walk along the entirety of the Kanapitsa region, stopping by each local beach as you go. Namely, starting at Tzaneria beach, walking past Kanapitsa beach to Diamandis beach, and then on to Vromolimnos, spending a little time on each.

Tzaneria beach is set in a sheltered bay surrounded by pine trees. The waters are generally calm, clear, and perfect for swimming in.

During the summer months, sunbeds and umbrellas line the beach and are available to rent. Tzaneria often gets crowded.

One major draw of Tzaneria for many is its excellent fish tavernas that are right on the seafront. Their menus serve up an array of sumptuous dishes prepared with the freshest local catches.

Mandraki Beach

Mandraki beach can be found on Skiathos’ west coast. If you want to escape the crowds, this is a place to have on your radar.

The sandy beach here extends for miles and miles as far as the eye can see. Even in the height of summer, it is easy to set down your towel here and have areas of coastline all to yourself.

This is perhaps because Mandraki is not all that easy to access; It is connected to Koukounaries by a dirt trail that isn’t great for vehicles. The beach is not organised and boasts no tourist facilities. However, there is a small canteen that sells drinks and refreshments.

Banana Beach

Skiathos’ Banana beach is separated into two distinct parts: little banana and big banana. The unusual name has been awarded to this stretch of coastline on account of its curved shape.

The main part of the beach is organised, lined with sunbeds and tiki-style umbrellas. During the summer months, beach parties with live DJs are often hosted at big banana beach.

It is the place to see and be seen if you are young, attractive, and Mediterranean. Parties and events here often continue all night and well into the next morning.

Little Banana beach offers quite a different experience. At the end of ¨big¨ Banana beach, you can follow a narrow dirt trail leading past a huge rock.

The quiet cove with crystalline waters that awaits on the other side is the little banana beach. Little banana beach is one of the most popular naturist-friendly beaches in Skiathos.

Achladies

Achladies beach is a long stretch of sandy coastline just 4km away from Skiathos town. Many resorts, hotels, and tavernas can be found on the road that runs parallel to Achladies.

Achladies may not have the same jaw-dropping natural beauty as say, Lalaria or Diamandis. However, itś a nice, peaceful stretch of sandy coast.

The ambiance here is particularly beautiful at sunset. You can sit by the sea as you watch the sun dip behind the uninhabited island of Tsougkriaki.

Blessed with some of the Aegean’s most exquisite sandy white beaches, backed by rippling hills carpeted in scented pines and olive trees, Skiathos is the most developed of the Sporades. The beautiful beach-fringed south coast is filled with walled-in holiday villas, hotels and apartments, and from June to September, when the island fills up with sun-seeking Greeks and northern Europeans, prices soar and rooms dwindle. Seek out Skiathos' elegant monasteries, hidden-away churches and hillside hiking paths, however, and you'll still catch a glimpse of its soul.

If you’re looking for beautiful sandy beaches in Europe this summer, look no further than the Greek island of Skiathos. With 60 stunning beaches scattered along a 44 km coastline, the island is small but mighty.

From highly-organized beaches with sunbeds, watersports , and bars, to secluded, quiet beaches which can only be reached by boat, Skiathos offers something for every type of holiday goer.

Below, you’ll find a guide to the 7 best beaches in Skiathos with information on how to reach them and handy insider tips.

1. Koukounaries Beach

best beaches on skiathos, skiathos beaches, beautiful beaches greece, skiathos beach, watersports

Koukounaries Beach

Koukounaries is a colloquial Greek term for pine trees so you can begin to picture the surrounding areas of this stretch of coastline. Located at the southwest part of the island, Koukounaries is one of the busiest beaches on the island. But don’t let that put you off; this beach is also closely managed by the local authorities to ensure it remains as one of the island’s biggest assets.

Stretching only a couple of kilometers long, the beach boasts some of the best sand and swimming conditions on Skiathos. Alongside its natural beauty, the beach is accompanied by an array of sunbeds, watersports, bars, supermarkets and restaurants, making it a great place to take all the family.

Koukounaries beach can be reached by boat, moped, car, taxi or bus. If taking the bus, get on the bus going away from Skiathos Town and get off at Bus Stop 26 (you can’t miss it, it’s the end of the line).

If you are looking for natural Skiathos beaches, you should definitely keep this one in mind.

Insider tip

Get to the beach early so that you can have your choice of sunbeds. Aim for the end ones as they guarantee more space when the beach inevitably gets busier later in the day.

2. Troulos Bay Beach

Troulos Bay is a must visit when touring Skiathos. Located on the southern side of the island, the beach is easily accessible, sandy and generally wind-free. An ideal beach for those located in the nearby tourist resort, also named Troulos, the sandy shore offers both sunbed and untouched sand for lounging upon.

Also accompanied by several restaurants and a hotel, there are plenty of places to grab a drink or snack during your time in Troulos.

Best for those traveling with a young family, Troulos is reachable by boat, moped, car, taxi or bus, and is a great place to start if you’re new to the island. If taking the bus, get on the bus going away from Skiathos Town and get off at bus stop 20.

Put this one on your list as it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skiathos, Greece.

For the ultimate way to end a day at Troulos beach, head to the Troulos Bay Hotel beach bar around 5 pm for a cold drink and watch the sunset over the beach.

3. Elia Beach (aka Mandraki Beach)

If you’re looking for a beach which is more secluded, less touristy and largely untouched by sunbeds and watersports, you’ll love Elia Beach. Located on the northern side of the island, it is one of the lesser frequented beaches due to its slightly less accessible nature, lower infrastructure and tendency to be windy.

However, don’t let any of that deter you. This beach is ideal for anyone wanting to relax and escape some of the hustle and bustle of the southern side of the island. With a sandy shoreline, clear water and a rustic taverna, this beach encompasses everything beautiful about Greece.

To reach Elia Beach, take a car or taxi and ask for Mandraki Beach. They’ll know where to take you.

If you want to enjoy Skiathos and all its pine tree glory, take the bus going away from Skiathos Town and get off at bus stop 23. Follow the sign-posts for Mandraki beach and walk for about 1.5 km along a sandy track.

Insider Tip

Make sure you take plenty of water and food with you to this beach. The food and drink options are limited and you wouldn’t want to leave early on account of your hunger!

Mandraki Walk

4. Banana Beach (Big & Little)

Skiathos’ Banana Beach guarantees you a different sort of day on the island. Split into two sections (‘big banana’ and ‘little banana’), the two very closely located beaches offer two very different experiences.

For a quiet, relaxed day at the beach, head to Small Banana where the golden sand and crystal clear waters are accompanied by a general sense of tranquillity .

For a slightly more vibrant atmosphere, turn towards Big Banana Beach which hosts music, partying and some of the most beautiful people on the island.

Frequented primarily by young Greek and Italian tourists, the beach is known for its fun in the sun where party-goers stay until the sun sets.

Both of these beaches are reachable by taxi, moped, car and bus. If taking the bus, get off at bus stop 26 for Koukounaries and take the short but steep walk to the shore.

Small Banana Beach has a section which is permitted as a naturist beach so please bear this in mind if traveling with children.

5. Lalaria Beach

If you’ve Googled ‘Skiathos’, you’ve probably seen photos of Lalaria. From striking white cliff faces and a small pebbled beach to crystal-clear waters and a naturally-formed rock archway, this beach is every traveler and photographer’s paradise.

Hidden away on the north-eastern tip of Skiathos, the beach is often considered one of the most picturesque and worthwhile beaches to visit whilst on the island. Free from all infrastructure, sunbeds and watersports, the island is remote and is the perfect destination for anyone in need of some peace and quiet.

Whether you’re looking to indulge in a book, swim under the rock archway or simply get snapping photos for Instagram, this beach should not be missed whilst in Skiathos.

Reachable only by boat, this beach is a little trickier to get to. Go into Skiathos Town and head to the old harbor (where the smaller boats are and the expensive yachts aren’t) and search out a small boat which will take you to Lalaria.

Alternatively, there are several larger boat trips which will stop off at the beach and some of Skiathos’ even smaller sandy shores.

On days where there are high winds at sea, even boats will be unable to reach this beach. Boat trips can cost anywhere between 10-25 € per person.

To really amp up your Instagram game, head to Kolymbithres Beach in Paros . Kolymbithres Beach is one of the best beaches in Paros and famous for its unique rock formations.

6. Diamandi Beach

If you’re looking for another beautiful beach to visit whilst in Skiathos, look no further than Diamandi Beach.

Located on the southern coast of the island, it is small, sandy and the perfect stop-off point on a trip around the island. Free from overcrowded sunbeds, watersports and music, this idyllic beach simply offers turquoise water and a quaint taverna serving local food.

Like Lalaria, this beach is best reached by boat. Either hire out your own or join an organized tour of the island to visit Diamandi and all its beauty.

The taverna can get busy at lunch time so you better book a table as soon as you arrive at the beach.

7. Kastro Beach

If you’re looking to combine history with a trip to the coast, look no further than Kastro Beach.

Located on the northern tip of the island, this beach offers something a little different to the others on the island. Whilst similarly comprised of Skiathos’ signature golden sand and crystal-clear waters, this beach sits at the foot of the medieval town of Kastro which was once this island’s capital.

Previously used as a defensive town against invading pirates the local town is now home to ruins and abandoned cannons. Not only does Kastro beach offer a great place to relax in the sun, but it’s also great to explore on an afternoon stroll.

Kastro beach is only accessible by car, taxi, moped or boat. If traveling by car, taxi or moped, please be advised that there is a short walk from the carpark to the shoreline which also involves some stairs so it may not be suitable for small children or the elderly.

If you decide to explore Kastro town, take your own water and food as there are very little shops in the town.

Visiting Skiathos: Everything You Need to Know

posted by Nikos Tsakiris on June 9, 2023 // last updated on June 15, 2023

Nestled in the northwest Aegean Sea, Skiathos is a breathtaking Greek island belonging to the enchanting Sporades archipelago .

Known for its beautiful landscapes, deep green trees, and rockin’ bars and restaurants, Skiathos has become a sought-after destination for travellers seeking a perfect blend of pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich history.

One of the first to cash in on the Greek holiday boom thanks to an international airport Skiathos has remained one of the most popular Greek island holiday destinations.

Skiathos is a small and compact island, just 12km long and about 6km wide, and its main claim to fame is a plethora of large, deep, sandy beaches strung right the way along its southern coastline.

Recent years have seen an explosion in tourist facilities and, nowadays, a virtually unbroken line of hotels, apartments and neon-lit tavernas flank the once rural road that runs the length of the south coast.

A ban on high rise hotels has curbed major downmarket excess and the tavernas may be as much baklavas as burgers, but Skiathos still groans under its own weight in annual tourist numbers.

The island’s ever growing popularity has resulted in higher prices in the popular resorts and the inevitable drift to dumbed down tackiness.

The closely-packed Skiathos holiday beaches are sandy and safe for children, making this an ideal island for family holidays.

Most of the interior of Skiathos is hilly, heavily wooded and almost totally deserted with a few less crowded beaches on the north coast.

This picturesque island promises an unforgettable experience that caters to different preferences and ages, making it an ideal getaway for everyone.

The shores of Skiathos are home to numerous first-rate beaches that invite guests to relax and unwind while soaking up the Mediterranean sun.

tourist map of skiathos beaches

The island’s picturesque town, known for its romantic atmosphere, captivates visitors with its charming narrow whitewashed alleys, and traditional architecture. For those seeking a more dynamic experience, the island’s intense nightlife is especially popular among young travellers, offering a wide variety of bars and clubs to dance the night away.

With so much to explore and enjoy, Skiathos is truly a gem waiting to be discovered.

Whether you choose to travel by ferry from harbours like Volos or Agios Konstantinos, or opt for a different route, this guide will help you make the most of your visit to this green paradise, ensuring a memorable holiday that will leave you longing to return.

Getting to Skiathos

Skiathos is a beautiful Greek island in the Sporades archipelago, known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. In this section, we’ll discuss two primary ways to get to Skiathos: by air and by ferry.

Skiathos has its own airport, Skiathos International Airport “Alexandros Papadiamantis” (JSI), which serves both domestic and international flights. Several airlines operate seasonal direct flights from various European cities during the peak months, making it a convenient option for travellers.

In addition to direct flights, you can also fly to Skiathos via a layover in Athens. There are frequent domestic flights between Athens (ATH) and Skiathos (JSI), operated by local carriers.

Another popular way to reach Skiathos is via ferry. The island is well-connected to the mainland and other neighbouring islands by ferry routes. There are daily connections between Skiathos and the port of Volos in mainland Greece, as well as the port of Agios Konstantinos in Central Greece. The ferry ride typically takes between 2 to 3 hours, depending on the type of vessel.

Moreover, you can travel to Skiathos from other islands in the Sporades archipelago, such as Skopelos and Alonnisos, via regular ferry services.

When planning your trip, consider checking ferry schedules and booking your tickets in advance, particularly during the peak summer season, as routes can become busy. You can book your ferry tickets online or at local travel agencies.

In summary, Skiathos is accessible by air and sea, offering multiple options for travellers to reach the picturesque island and enjoy its natural beauty, pristine beaches, and lively atmosphere.

Where to Visit in Skiathos

Skiathos town.

The main island resort of Skiathos Town bristles with tavernas, bars and nightclubs all lying within a deep double bay on the south-eastern edge of the island.

This is a busy and bustling resort where cosmopolitan harbourside bars thump to disco music and the air is punctuated with the whine of passing mopeds. Charter planes swoop in low over Skiathos Town bay to land at the nearby airport and ferries pull in regularly with arrivals from the mainland.

The background noise may not be to everyone’s taste but it’s not unpleasant to lounge the evening away in one of the busy quayside cafe watching the tourists stroll by. Or you can join the throngs of holiday shoppers cruising the Skiathos Town boutiques and trinket shops that line the traffic-free centre.

Skiathos Town has two quays split by an outcrop of rock called the Bourtzi. Dozens of cafes run the length of both harbours with the old port to the west and the new harbour to the east. Cafes in the old harbour are bigger, many of them 10 or 12 tables deep.

The old harbour is also traffic-free, offering a pleasant evening stroll for visitors and it is here that the Skiathos island caquies pitch the display boards touting barbecue trips around Skiathos and daily jaunts to neighbouring islets.

The main Skiathos Town shopping street leads inland from the Bourtzi up the hill. Even more shops, cafes and tavernas are jammed along the narrow street, with the occasional whiff of sewage from the drains that run beneath.

Menus are uniformly pricey and meals are mediocre to poor as the volume of passing trade takes its toll on quality. Many new cafes have sprouted in the last few years as Athenian businessmen cash in on the roaring trade.

Tavernas overlooking the bay to the west tend to be the most expensive, as are the cafes that line the old harbour but none anywhere in Skiathos will be considered cheap.

Katsarou Village

South-west of the resorts of Megali Ammos and Vassilias is the coastal village of Katsarou. Some good hotels and apartments have made Katsarou increasingly popular with tour companies in recent years.

Katsarou is a typical sleepy village of cobbled streets and whitewashed houses just above the main road on the steep pine-carpeted hillside. The elevated position makes it cooler but the relative isolation will not suit everyone.

It is a steep one kilometre walk downhill to beaches at Vassilias and Kassandra Bay. Car hire here is a must unless you want to hide away for the holiday, although local hotels do offer free bus services.

For a quiet break in serene surroundings this could be just the spot. There are a couple of pleasant tavernas in the village.

The Ultimate Guide to Skiathos, Greece

Different from the other more popular and currently trending Greek islands, the island of Skiathos preserves the charms of authentic Greece.

Immediately upon arriving at the charming town of Skiathos, I fell in love. This picturesque village is vibrantly coloured by greenery, royal blue waters, and red-tiled roofs, featuring narrow twisting streets, traditional Greek tavernas, and handcraft shops. Skiathos isn’t really loaded with archaeological sites, however, the island makes up for this with its beauty and charm coupled with sandy and not-so-sandy beautiful beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters.

5 Reasons to visit Skiathos

1. the picturesque cobbled town, 2. beaches straight out of paradise.

5. A bit of everything

Skiathos has a bit of everything for everyone. The Greek island destination is suitable for families, couples, and friends. If you’re into gorgeous beaches, stunning landscapes, and traditional Greek culture in a no-crowd-zone coupled with affordable prices, then Skiathos should be your next travel destination.

Not to mention, it’s where the Abba-themed movie Mamma Mia was filmed! The Chapel of Agios Ioannis in the movie, however, is not on the island, but a short boat trip away in Skopelos 😉

Skiathos is a stunning Greek getaway destination, where there’s always something fun and exciting to do. Visitors can enjoy beaches, explore ancient ruins, join tours, participate in water activities, and experience so much more.

12 Things to do in Skiathos

1. watch the mamma mia show at the open-air cinema.

The open-air cinema in Skiathos Town shows Mamma Mia! every week. I won’t spoil the surprise, but you really can’t miss it! Purchase your tickets in advance to ensure you find a place! You can purchase snacks and drinks inside, including wine!

Cost: 10 Euros per ticket

2. Beach, beach, and more beach!

Skiathos boasts around 60 stunning beaches found all around the island. Koukounaries Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island; even we were won over by its beauty. There are also many companies offering fun water activities there such as diving and snorkeling. Small Tip: Bring bug spray – no one seemed to be bothered by this, but there were bees everywhere. This beach took 3 rd  place among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean.

Banana Beach is also a popular choice with the nudist beach Little Banana right around the corner.

Lalaria is one of the beaches that stole my heart – this secluded rocky beach with sea caves is located north of the island and we found it best to go with the island tour for a few hours since we didn’t need to spend the whole day there.

3. Water activities

Go scuba diving and explore caves, reefs, and ship wrecks with certified divers for a memorable and exciting experience.

4. Go on a boat island tour

I highly recommend this so you can get a feel of some of the awesome beaches in Skiathos (and then re-visit your favourites the following days). You don’t need to book online; simply go to the port in the evening and you’ll see several companies each offering a tour package; you decide based on the tour offered, your budget, etc. We booked a Skiathos island tour with Nemesis and thoroughly enjoyed it! Our stops included Lalaria and Kastro, as well as Tsougaria beach on the island facing Skiathos.

Cost: 15-20 Euros per ticket

5. Go shopping on Papadiamantis Street

This street is considered the main shopping area in Skiathos. I recommend Toakrokeramo  for handmade souvenirs and silver jewelry and Ps ari for traditional Greek leather sandals, handmade bags and tunics, etc.

6. Visit the Medieval Castle

Kastro, the island’s medieval castle, was built in 1350. As with Lalaria Beach, we visited this beautiful abandoned village on our Skiathos island tour and explored the ruins. The views from the top are exceptionally breathtaking!

7. Visit the Bourtzi Fortress grounds

Bourtzi Fortress is situated on the main port of the island. This 13 th century fortress was built to protect the island from pirate invasions. A school was built in the 20 th century on the grounds and now serves as a cultural center. There’s a cute cafe there where you can have a drink in the evening overlooking the sea.

8. Simply stroll around town

Skiathos Town is so beautiful and it’s filled with restaurants, bars, shops, small churches, and more. Explore the town by taking a stroll through the cobbled stone streets and finish along the harbor. Once you’re tired from walking around and feel like having some food, stop for ice cream, coffee, or a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and cafés!

9. Experience Skiathos town nightlife

Skiathos Town is one of the most beautiful Greek island towns, lined with little shops, restaurants, and bars. Most of the bars and tavernas offer beer for as little as €2 earlier in the evening. Portobello is a great choice!

10. Catch a boat to Skopelos

Day trips from Skiathos to Skopelos are popular as well as overnight stays!  Skopelos island is located between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos. You have the choice of catching a ferry  (best for overnight stays) or a “Kaiki” water taxi which leaves town in the morning and comes back in the evening. A third option would be to take one of the day-trip tours offered on the port as with the boat island tour.

11. Go hiking

With over 20 GPS-mapped hiking routes to choose from, Skiathos provides visitors a chance to explore nature. You can even find medical herbs along the hike. For more information, visit Hiking Skiathos .

12.  Visit the Agios Nikolaos Church & Clock Tower

For spectacular panoramic views of Skiathos Town, climb up to the Church of Agios Nikolaos and Clock Tower. There are many beautiful churches around the island, however, they are more easily accessible by car.

What to eat in Skiathos

1. have greek yogurt and coffee for breakfast by the port.

I fell in love with Greek yogurt during my trip to Greece. Greeks mainly have coffee for breakfast, but I would eat yogurt almost every morning with sticky local honey, crunchy walnuts, and sometimes fruit.

2. Eat traditional Greek cuisine at a taverna

Plenty of traditional tavernas in Skiathos offer authentic Greek cuisine to indulge in. I recommend Grill House Old Street for its friendly hospitality, chill ambiance, and tasty Greek specialties like dolmades and stuffed vegetables; this was the first taverna we had dinner in upon arrival. Another of our favourites on the island was Mesogia Taverna, also in Skiathos Town.

3. Experience fine dining and seafood at Marmita

I very highly recommend and insist you pay a visit to Marmita when in Skiathos. It’s a whole other level of Greek fine dining in a very beautiful relaxed atmosphere. It’s the first place I would go to if I ever visit Skiathos again. The Fried Calamari and Grilled Mastelo Cheese dishes are exceptional. Our host also recommended rabbit, but we didn’t have the heart! Check out my exclusive review of Marmita Restaurant .

4. Taste the special “Mamma Mia” ice cream at MAMMA MIA! Ice Cream Parlour

Of course, the rest of the flavours offered are just as fantastic.

Getting around the island

If you’re staying in town, which I highly recommend, there’s a very easy bus service you can use to get to the different beaches of the island such as Koukounaries and Banana Beach.

There are three bus routes in Skiathos. The main route connects Skiathos Town to Koukounaries (Stop #25), which leaves town every 20 minutes. The other two routes are for Xanemos (north east) and Moni Evagelistrias (north).

If you don’t feel like taking the bus, you can always take a shorter ferry ride to other parts of the island. For instance, Lalaria Beach, is not easily accessible so you’ll need to catch a “Kaiki” boat.

To explore the main tourist sites on the more developed side of the island, taxis (and buses) are your best option.

For an estimate of taxi costs to some destinations on the island, check out this table .

In order to explore the northern part of the island, which is slightly less developed and where access is difficult, then it would be best to rent a small all-terrain vehicle or even a motorbike, which is more convenient and cheaper. There is a rent-a-car company right on the port.

For more info on transport around the island, check out this detailed guide .

When to go to Skiathos

The sea starts to get warmer in late spring. Bars and seaside restaurants open early June up to mid-September.

How to get to Skiathos

Skiathos is one of four inhabited islands of the Sporades complex.

Skiathos Island can be reached by:

  • Airplane :  If you’re coming from Athens, the most convenient and fastest option would be by plane. Once you arrive at Skiathos airport, take a taxi to get to town. In summer, there are numerous charter flights coming from many European cities.
  • Bus/Ferry:  Option two would be by ferry boats as well as the faster (and more costly) hydrofoils and “Flyingcats”. Boats leave from Agios Constantinos Port (165 km from Athens) and Volos Port (321 km from Athens / 204 km from Thessaloniki). Note that the faster options may cancel itineraries on windy days.

This post is so informative!! Great way to help us plan our trips! Can you write a guide on Athens as well? I’m going in May for 3days and then choosing one of the islands you wrote about for 3days too! Thanks!

Beautiful photos! Skiathos doesn’t get the attention that Santorini and Mykonos get, which is really a shame. It’s a beautiful island and a nice retreat for those who don’t love crowds.

What to see in Skiathos

Skiathos, one of the most scenic and verdant Greek islands, owes its evergreen look to the trees scattered all over the place. But, what gives Skiathos this charming and attractive character, is its impressive coastline. There are more than 60 awe-inspiring beaches with white or golden, soft sand and crystal clear waters. The sublime scenery is highlighted by the history of the island and the hospitality of its people. Skiathos is like a piece of jewelry of the Aegean Sea!

The island is famous for its lively nightlife which makes it one of the top destinations for young people. Types of accommodation range from luxurious 5-star hotels and villas to simple rooms and studios or organised campsites for the nature lovers.

Skiathos Town is the heart of the island, with all the major events taking place there and some of the most popular beaches, which are easily accessed by bus or even by foot, very close to it. Even though Skiathos Town is the most populated village on the island, it is not the only one which offers quality accommodation and facilities. Along the southern coast of the island, you will find small summer resorts offering a range of alternatives, according to your preferences.

Whether you are on holiday with your family and you would like a tranquil atmosphere or with your friends and seeking for adventures, Skiathos is the right place for you! Needless to say that it is the heaven on Earth for the adventurers due to its mountainous terrain and the wild beaches of the northern side. For your romantic self, the island has spectacular panoramic views from the hills up north as well from the harbour of Skiathos Town where you can unwind with a glass of wine at the bars on the waterfront just opposite of the Bourtzi Fortress.

The island has a long history starting from the pre-historic era and continuing to the Classical, Byzantine and Venetian period. The majority of the monuments of the island are Byzantine churches and monasteries. Among the most popular sights are the Bourtzi Fortress and the Medieval Castle of the Old Town.

Apart from the historic attractions, when you are on the island it is worth visiting some of the most beautiful natural sights, such as the wetland of Koukounaries, the Sea caves and Lalaria, the pebbly beach right next to them on the northeast side, as well as the islet Tsougrias. The picture-postcard scenery of these areas will make you want to stay on Skiathos forever!

The beaches on the northern side are very quiet and secluded, because they are difficult to reach by car or bus. However, there are boats running from Skiathos Town regularly to take you there. The most popular beaches are the sheltered sandy beaches of the south coast where you will find all sorts of facilities, from accommodation, bars with sun loungers and restaurants to well-organised water sports schools.

If you are into sports it is worth signing up in one of these schools and going diving to explore the beauty of the Mediterranean sea. There are more than 300 fish species in the Sporades group of islands, such as dolphins, swordfish, tuna and rare red corals. You could also go horse riding or hiking in the well-defined walking trails in various locations around the island. Alternatively, you could take part in one of the daily tours organised from Skiathos old port. Some of the most popular ones are the tour to Skopelos, Alonisos and the Marine Park or the Mama Mia tour around the locations where the movie was filmed.

For those of you who like cultural events, there are plenty of festivals in the summer. Even if you don’t speak the Greek language, it is a great chance to get to know another aspect of the Greek culture. The Papadiamantis House is definitely worth a visit as it is a typical example of the architecture of the island.

If you want to have a taste of Skiathos cuisine in particular, you should try some of the local products produced with the finest ingredients, such as local sweet preserves, honey and olives from the olive trees of the island, as well as the freshly caught fish.

All in all, this small island with the natural beauty, the vivid nightlife and the hospitable and friendly people can turn your holidays into a memorable experience. You will absolutely love it!

Best Aegean islands to visit

T he Greek islands are a magical blend of beautiful beaches, diverse countryside, rich history, and delicious food. The Aegean islands are situated in the Aegean Sea, with mainland Greece to their north and west, Turkey to their east, and the large island of Crete to the south.

Most of the Aegean islands are Greek, and the others are Turkish. The islands are divided into groups such as the Cyclades and the Saronic groups. Each island has its own distinctive character, and while some have their own airport and get extremely popular during the summer months, others are more "off the beaten track" as they must be reached by boat from other islands and consequently remain quieter even in the peak season.

The best news is that there is definitely an Aegean Island that will suit you perfectly. So let's get to know the islands of the Aegean and find out what are our top picks. Spoiler alert: they are lesser known, small island gems that will surprise you in the best way possible.

See the Aegean Islands on the map .

What are the Aegean Islands of Greece?

There are over 1,400 Aegean islands large and small, one more beautiful than the next. Before deciding which ones to explore on your next trip, get to know your island groups:

North-eastern Aegean Islands:

Saronic islands (a small group close to athens):, cyclades (large group, southeast of mainland greece):.

  • Folegandros

Sporades Islands (meaning "scattered"):

The two largest aegean islands that do not belong to an island group are:, best aegean islands to put on your bucket list: , 1. karpathos.

The best Aegean Island is the beautiful Karpathos, the second largest in the Dodecanese located just a one-hour domestic flight from Athens. For those who prefer traveling at a more leisurely pace, there are ferries arriving at the island's main port of Pigardia from the Athenian port of Piraeus.

Karpathos is an island of contrasts with tree-lined mountain slopes, gorgeous sandy beaches, and lovely traditional villages with lively tavernas serving excellent island cuisine – which includes delicious dishes slow-baked in wood-fired ovens. There is the island's Manouli cheese to sample, which is impressively good, and the wines from the villages of Othos and Volada. Apella, the island's best beach, is lined by pine trees and has pale golden sand and clear azure water – perfect for snorkeling.

Visiting the island's villages is fun, and one of the most enchanting is Olympus where time really has stood still! The villagers can still be seen wearing their traditional costumes and sitting in groups in the shade, chatting away as they embroider, while the men are in their workshops crafting musical instruments.

Olympos is known for its row of windmills which are a particularly good vantage point for watching the sun set. At 500m, Othos is the highest village on the island with great views and a traditional village house to view. There are various boat trips to enjoy, including one to the isolated islet of Saria which is a Natura-2000 protected area.

2. Astypalea

The butterfly-shaped Dodecanese island of Astypalea is the perfect place for a relaxing holiday with beautiful beaches, snowy white cubic buildings, great boat trips, and leisurely meals that can last the whole evening. The island has two distinct halves that are joined by a narrow stretch of land less than 100 meters in width. The western part of the island is known as Mesa Nisi, meaning ‘inner island', and the eastern part is Exo Nisi, ‘outer island'.

Chora, the pretty main town, is perched on a rock and has a Venetian castle that overlooks the traditional port of Pera Gialos. There are numerous winding streets with flower-filled balconies and little shops to explore. From Pera Gialos, there are many different boat trips to remote beaches like Koutsomitis and Kounoupes that are two islets joined by a sandy strip. Visiting Drakos cave by boat is also fun as there are impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations.

Immersing yourself in island life is great, and discovering the local cuisine is definitely an important part! There is lambriano as a main dish to try, which is stuffed and roasted goat, lentil-based arntista, and poungia (little phyllo pastry pockets filled with cheese). Lambrokouloura are delicious biscuits that are flavored with locally produced saffron. The dish that is truly irresistible is xirotigana, which are fried dough rings drizzled with local wildflower honey.

3. Skiathos

Skiathos is part of the Sporades archipelago of islands in the north-west Aegean. This small island is known for its lovely beaches, beautiful pine woods, and also for its racy nightlife! Skiathos Town is the main town with a delightful old harbor fringed by bars and restaurants with tables spilling onto the pavements. Between the town and the island's airport, there are numerous waterfront clubs for sitting, relaxing with a cocktail, or dancing until breakfast.

The island has great beaches, and for those who want to do more than stretch out on the sand, the beaches on the southern coast offer a variety of water sports too – including banana rides, paragliding, and water skiing. If you love scuba diving, Skiathos is ideal as it has underwater caves and reefs to explore. There are sea caves on the northern coast that can be visited on a boat trip.

It is a great island if you like trekking as it is criss-crossed by ancient pathways that take you to secluded beaches, monasteries, and hilltop villages. There are also monasteries, castles, and museums to visit, so there is rarely a dull moment on Skiathos.

Located just two hours from Athens by ferry, the Saronic island of Hydra has been a haven for writers and artists – including Leonard Cohen – since the 1950s and more recently, with many A-Listers , earning it the nickname of ‘the St Tropez of Greece'.

The main town is elegant with large merchants' houses and cobbled streets that tumble down the hillside to the Old Port. Everything can be explored peacefully and easily as all motor vehicles are prohibited on this idyllic island, and the main mode of transport is donkey!

In the 18th century, it became an affluent island as its commercial fleet traded with countries far and wide. The perfect way to explore the island is either on foot or horseback, and there are plenty of opportunities to do this. There are 300 churches and six monasteries, but the most important is the Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary in the center of the harbor in the main town.

There are several museums to visit and the beautiful fishing village like Kamini. Rafalia's Pharmacy is one of the oldest in Greece and exactly how it has always been, with scores of jars and bottles for all types of medication, stored on large wooden shelves – amazing to see! The island has numerous beaches for lazy moments, and the Sunset Restaurant in Kamini is definitely the place to be as the sun starts to sink in the sky.

5. Skopelos

This lovely island in the western Aegean (close to Skiathos) is never going to be the same since it was revealed to the world in the ABBA movie Mamma Mia! There is no airport on the island, so a ferry from Thessaloniki or another Greek Island is the only way to reach it.

The island has two main towns; its capital is Skopelos Town (known as Chora), and the second main town is Glossa near the harbor of Loutraki. Both towns have distinctive red-roofed buildings. Chora has steep narrow streets and countless pomegranate trees! At the top of the town is the Venetian castle (Kastro), and it's worth the climb for the view.

For relaxing days, there are lovely beaches – but they are all pebbled, which is great if you don't like sand getting everywhere! With no sand, the waters around the island are crystal clear and ideal for diving and snorkeling, and there are boat trips to other islands with the chance of seeing dolphins, seals, turtles, and whales.

While we have focused on some of the lesser-known islands of the Aegean, of course, there are the popular islands of Crete, Kos, and Rhodes to consider as well as the favorite islands in the Cyclades group such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Paros. It really can be hard to make a choice when there are so many lovely islands to visit – no wonder so many visitors opt to island hop!

Where are the fires in Greece? What wildfires in Kos mean for your trip

After Greece experienced its earliest ever heatwave last month, continued extreme temperatures have caused wildfires in Kos, Chios and Crete

Liv Kelly

Greece is only set to get busier over the next few weeks, with tourists from all over flocking to the country’s islands to enjoy its glorious sandy beaches and guaranteed sun. However, Greece’s  earliest-ever heatwave  in June marked the start of another summer of extremely high temperatures and wildfires .

Only a couple of weeks after the  Paphos wildfires,  tourists have described ‘apocalyptic’ scenes of smoke after more wildfires broke out on Monday July 1 on the islands of Kos, Chios and Crete. Understandably,  this is worrying news if you’ve got an upcoming trip to Greece. Here is everything you need to know about the wildfires in Greece and how they might affect your holiday.

Where are the wildfires in Greece?

The islands of Kos , Chios and Crete have seen wildfires spread in the last couple of days. In eastern Kos, a wildfire broke out in Antimachia early Monday afternoon and spread towards the tourist resort of Kardamaina. 10,000 people were evacuated and took shelter in schools, sports stadiums and hotels in Antimachia, Mastichari and Marmari, according to Ekathimerini.com .

It’s thought that so far on the island, 3,309 acres of land have burned at time of writing. You can keep an eye on the affected area using this map , which is informed by satellite sources.

On the island of Chios, the northwest town of Sidirounda saw a blaze break out, but was diverted away from residential areas this morning thanks to additional firefighting forces dispatched from Lesvos and Athens.  Vianos on the southern coast of Crete also saw a wildfire break out, and the village of Katofygi was evacuated as a precaution – this fire has also now been contained to a ravine.

The island of Serifos and the Attica region around Athens also saw fires break out over the weekend (June 29 and 30) but these had been controlled and subsided by Monday morning.

Is it safe to travel?

News of wildfires is of course a concern if you have a trip booked to Greece, but there is currently no official advice against travelling to the country. Instead, you should follow local advice on how to stay safe in the heat and check if there is a risk of wildfires in the area you’re staying.

Those travelling to Kos, Chios and Crete might face difficulties as the islands have been carrying out evacuations.

The good news is that Greece has amped up its prep for the summer ahead. More staff have been hired and trained, and the use of drones and early warning systems have proved useful in tracking potential wildfires so far.

What started the fires in Greece?

The prolonged drought and dry weather that Greece has experienced has led to what  Sky News describes as ‘tinderbox-like’ conditions. Paired with unusually strong winds, conditions have been prime for the outbreak of wildfires.

Can I get a refund if I choose not to travel because of wildfires?

You’ll only be able to claim a refund if official advise is issued against travelling to Greece. To see what can be done, it’s best to contact your accommodation, flight or trip provider directly – you might instead be able to reschedule your trip.

What’s the latest UK Foreign Office advice?

The UK Foreign Office has not yet issued any advice against travelling to any parts of Greece, but its section on forest fires and wildfires says: ‘There is a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October. Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly. To avoid starting wildfires: leave no litter, especially not glass which is known to start fires; make sure cigarettes are properly extinguished; do not light barbecues. Causing a wildfire or a forest fire is a criminal offence in Greece – even if unintentional. If you see a fire, call the emergency services on 112.’

It also encourages you to follow @112Greece for official updates on X (fka Twitter), and to follow guidance issued by the local emergency services.

What started the fires in Greece in 2023?

Last summer, Europe experienced extremely hot and dry weather conditions which. combined with strong winds, put plenty of areas at high risk of wildfires.

However,  a senior climate crisis official said the majority of fires were started by ‘human hand’. As of late August 163 arrests have been made on fire-related charges.

Where else in Europe has been affected by wildfires?

Wildfires have also broken out in Türkiye  as the temperature reached between eight and 12C higher than seasonal norms. Following fires in Antalya’s Kumluca in June, blazes have broken out  in the Selçuk and Menderes districts of İzmir, and in Susurluk, Balıkesir, in the last week. H undreds of hectares of land have been destroyed.

Greece’s extreme temperatures led to  Athens closing schools and tourist attractions , including the Acropolis, last month. Paphos also experienced wildfires .

Elsewhere in Europe, areas of southern Switzerland, northeast France and northern Italy have been battered by torrential rain and storms , and seven people have reportedly died.
