Kapalua Golf

Playing the Plantation Course is sure to be on every golfer’s bucket list

Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the course was designed on a grand scale in keeping with its location on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains and offers dramatic ocean views from virtually every hole. Its lengthy 7,596 yard par 73 layout challenges the pros but its wide fairways and generous greens make it very playable for the average golfer.

Course Layout

You’ll feel like one of the pros when you play the plantation course.

With dramatic elevation changes, this course offers plenty of downhill tee shots. You’ll feel like one of the pros when – with the aid of the aggressive slope of the 18th fairway – you will enjoy hitting one of the longest drives of your life. The Plantation Course is the site of the PGA TOUR’s The Sentry each January featuring an elite field of previous year’s PGA TOUR winners.

The field has included golf greats such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Davis Love III, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, Jon Rahm and many more. The course record is set at 61 and tied between Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm, and Matt Jones from the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:

Most golf fans are familiar with Kapalua Golf Club’s Plantation Course, home of the PGA Tour's opening event each year. Located on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Plantation was built from open, windswept pineapple fields on the pronounced slope of a volcano and is irrigated by sprinklers pressured solely by gravity. As the first design collaboration by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it unveiled their joint admiration for old-style courses. The blind drive on the fourth, the cut-the-corner drives on the fifth and sixth are all based on tee shots found at National Golf Links. So, too, are its punchbowl green and strings of diagonal bunkers. It's also a massive course, built on a huge scale, Coore says, to accommodate the wind and the slope and the fact that it gets mostly resort play. So it's a big course. But what sets it apart in my mind are the little things. When I played the course years ago with Coore, it took only one hole for me to appreciate one of its subtleties. We were on the tee of the par-3 second, an OK hole but nothing riveting, nothing like the canyon-carry par-3 eighth or the ocean-backdropped par-3 11th. The second sits on a rare flat portion of the property. The green sits at a diagonal, angling left to right, and there's a string of bunkers staggering up the right side of the green. The first bunker appears to be directly in front of the green but is actually 40 yards short of it. When pointed out to me, I called it Gingerbread. Bill disagreed. "The wind quarters off your left shoulder from behind you," he pointed out. "The green goes ever so slightly away from you from front to back and left to right. It is a very obvious situation, given the wind condition and the angle of this green; you know you should hit a shot left-to-right to fit the shot with the green. "But if the flag is at the front, there’s no way to fly that ball all the way to the hole and stop it close. You may stop it somewhere on the green, but nowhere within a reasonable putt. So you have to aim short of the green. They maintain the approaches so beautifully over here—firm approaches mowed at probably a quarter of an inch; you can literally putt from out there if you chose to do so. "But that brings that first bunker in play," Coore continued. "When the flag is up front, you are absolutely required to land your ball just over that first bunker in order to get it to bounce and run to that front pin position." Kapalua's second is a simple-looking hole with a great deal of thought behind it. I suppose a lot of present-day architects would not have placed that forwardmost bunker on the hole, in the interests of playability for high-handicap resort golfers. But most of the old-time architects probably would have used such carry bunkers, especially in the days before irrigation, when greens were hard as a rock and every approach shot had to be bounced aboard. Another reason why studying the history of architecture might just help your score.

100 GREATEST/BEST IN STATE SCORES

Shot options, layout variety, conditioning.

“Big, fun golf course. In the wind, it can be brutal. Super wide fairways add to the fun factor. Playing the right set of tees is critical here. Lots of elevation changes makes it a challenge to choose the right club on approaches."

“Incredible views throughout the day as the ocean and the neighboring island of Molokai are visible from every shot on the course other than 15 tee. Design variety would be outstanding other than seemingly all par 5's played to about the same yardage when the prevailing wind is blowing....good balance of uphill/downhill, change in hole direction, and dogleg variety throughout all holes. Somewhat forgiving off the tee and w/ approach shots which fits w/ the resort atmosphere of the course. Several standout holes include 5 an uphill dogleg right par 5 around a canyon, 7 a long downhill par 4 dogleg right around a canyon w/ majestic ocean views, 8 a downhill and long par 3 w/ a shallow green complex, 11 a downhill par 3 w/ majestic views of both state park land and the ocean, 17 a long par 4 downhill w/ a generous yet severe green complex, and 18 the long par 5 downhill which doglegs to the left between the clubhouse and a severe droopy again w/ a demanding green complex. Summer trade winds tend to be much more severe than in the winter so difficulty can vary dramatically based on time of year played."

“Yes, it's fun to play a course that the tour plays, but it can also be very frustrating and not that much fun if you do not know the green complexes and shots to play. The first time I played it I did not think it was that fun, but the views made up for it. The second time I played it I appreciated the course more and understood how I was to play the course, which made it more fun."

“Kapalua Plantation is one of the most fun rounds I've played. The course plays up and down the mountain more than it looks on TV -- the course and views are spectacular!"

“Coore and Crenshaw have designed some of the best courses in the USA and world, but Plantation Course falls low on their impressive list. Despite recent renovations, course has too many severely sloping fairways and greens which lead to too many awkward bounces and lies. Course provides many outstanding vistas, but green fee is inappropriately too high (may be the highest in Hawaii for a resort course)."

“Some of the most iconic views in golf. Despite the hillyness of the property, the Coore-Crenshaw design makes it all work very well. Might be a bit pricey, but a round there will not be forgotten. The course has gotten a touch soft over the years but they are planning to get it back to the orginal firm conditions needed to take full advantage of the prevailing trade winds."

“Amazing views. Great variety of holes and at least two all-world holes. One of the best in all of Hawaii. A round on the Plantation Course and a Mai Tai afterward are about as good as a day can get."

“It took great imagination to design this course on such severe land. Forget that the PGA TOUR plays here, it is unwalkable. The only reason they walk it is because golf carts drive them around in places. The course itself is fun and demanding. Watch the slope on both the fairways and greens. They dictate where you hit the ball. Have dinner in the clubhouse. It won't disappoint."

“Fabulous piece of land, great design work by Coore/Crenshaw, 17 and 18 are great finishing holes."

“Truly an epic golf course, that never seems to disappoint. Fun golf with some of the best views on the planet. The entire experience from start to finish is impressive. The Pro Shop, professionals, clubhouse, locker room, cart boys, starters, practice range, etc. are all top notch. The weather can be a bit of a thorn in the side, but it is almost always warm, so the trade winds and passing showers can cool things off."

Kapalua’s Plantation Course in Hawaii – site of this week’s season-opening The Sentry on the PGA Tour – was the first course built by the now-legendary design duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The mountainside layout opened in 1991 and was restored in 2019 .

The Plantation Course ranks No. 2 in Hawaii on Golfweek’s Best list of top public-access layouts in each state . It is No. 17 on Golfweek’s Best ranking of all resort courses in the U.S., and it’s No. 20 on the list of top public-access courses in the U.S.

The Plantation maxes out at 7,596 yards with a par of 73, and it has only one par 3 on the back nine. With several downhill tee shots and the possibility of several drives rolling out past 400 yards, the course usually plays significantly shorter than the yardage might indicate.

Why did the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merge? Here's a full breakdown

Everything you need to know about the pga tour and liv golf merger is right here, by logan reardon • published june 6, 2023 • updated on june 6, 2023 at 9:05 am.

The golf world was stunned on Tuesday morning.

In a shocking twist, the PGA Tour announced it would merge with the controversial LIV Golf in order to "unify the game of golf." The merger also includes the DP World Tour, which is the PGA's European Tour.

Watch NBC Bay Area News 📺 Streaming free 24/7

Tuesday's news answers the question of will LIV Golf survive, as the Saudi-backed tour struggled to maintain relevance despite heavy funding and the signings of star players.

Here's a full breakdown of the merger, including details on LIV Golf and what happens next:

When did LIV Golf form?

LIV Golf was founded in 2021 before playing its inaugural season in 2022.

The tour was owned by the Public Investment Fund, which is Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund. Two-time major champion Greg Norman served as CEO and the public face of the league.

Why did LIV golfers leave the PGA?

There were a few benefits for players joining LIV Golf.

First and foremost, golfers received massive money from the PIF. Phil Mickelson reportedly signed a $200 million contract to join LIV, while Dustin Johnson ($150 million), Bryson DeChambeau ($125 million), Brooks Koepka ($100 million) and Cameron Smith ($100 million) also reached nine-figure bonuses.

Get a weekly recap of the latest San Francisco Bay Area housing news. Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.

After signing their contracts just to join, players were awarded increased prize money during their tournaments. It was a clear message to the PGA Tour that players felt they were not being compensated fairly.

Beyond just the money, there were several other benefits that players saw with LIV. They played fewer tournaments each year (14 were scheduled for 2023 compared to 47 PGA events), with smaller fields and three rounds instead of four in each tournament.

LIV also utilized shotgun starts, meaning that every player began their round at the same time on different holes -- which meant the days were shorter.

What is the LIV Golf controversy?

The concern about LIV Golf was always about where the money came from.

Saudi Arabia funded the tour. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been involved in multiple controversies, including human rights violations of his own people, the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the government's alleged involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S.

The ethics of players taking money from the country has been debated endlessly since players started defecting. Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have both been outspoken against the league, with the latter reportedly turning down between $700 and $800 million to join.

A LIV Golf timeline

The PGA's rival tour is coming to an end but let's look back at some of the highlights over the last two years.

LIV Golf Announces TV Partnership With CW Network

While PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan previously condemned LIV Golf and discouraged players from taking their money, the merger seems to be a sellout of sorts. As part of the agreement, the PIF will contribute a "significant financial investment, toward minority equity ownership of a new, collectively held, for-profit LLC." The PIF will make a financial investment to become a premier corporate sponsor of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

What happens with PGA and LIV lawsuits now?

As part of the merger, PGA and LIV mutually agreed to end all pending litigation between the parties.

LIV sued the PGA last year for allegedly engaging in monopolistic behavior by creating rules intended to stop golfers from playing in rival leagues. PGA sought subpoenas for a countersuit alleging that LIV illegally pushed players to break contracts with the PGA by offering exorbitant sums of money.

The case was expected to go to trial next May, but that obviously will not happen after the merger.

What happens to PGA and LIV golfers now?

Here's what was said in the official announcement :

"The three organizations will work cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process for any players who desire to re-apply for membership with the PGA TOUR or the DP World Tour following the completion of the 2023 season and for determining fair criteria and terms of re-admission, consistent with each Tour's policies."

LIV Golfers were already eligible to play in major championships, so the merger doesn't change anything there. Koepka became the first LIV Golf player to win a major when he triumphed at the PGA Championship last month.

Scottie Scheffler, from the course to jail and back: What to know about his PGA Championship arrest

Here's a breakdown of what happened to the top-ranked golfer on friday in louisville, by will graves | associated press • published may 19, 2024.

Two-time Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was arrested Friday after Louisville police say he dragged an officer while trying to get around the scene of a fatal accident ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship .

The 27-year-old Scheffler, the world's No. 1-ranked golfer, was attempting to get to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, around 6 a.m. when police say he illegally bypassed the scene of an accident where a pedestrian was killed.

Scheffler was charged with multiple counts, including second-degree assault of a police officer and reckless driving. He was booked and had his mugshot taken before being released. Scheffler called the chain of events a “big misunderstanding.”

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

He returned to Valhalla in time for his 10:08 a.m. local tee time. Scheffler received a loud ovation from fans when he was introduced, then birdied his first hole of the day, the par-5 10th.

WHO IS SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER?

Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.

Scheffler arrived at Valhalla this week as a heavy favorite following a run of dominance in the sport not seen since Tiger Woods' prime. He entered play Thursday having won four of the last five tournaments he entered, including the Masters — one of golf's four major events — last month at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia.

The soft-spoken Texan is an unlikely star. He fell in love with the game as a child, sometimes hitting balls in the dark in northern New Jersey while his father, Scott, held a flashlight.

The Schefflers moved to Dallas during Scottie's childhood, with Scott Scheffler serving as a stay-at-home dad while Scheffler's mother, Diane, worked as the CEO at a law firm.

Scheffler played multiple sports growing up before ultimately settling on golf. He is hardly the only player in the family. His sister Callie played collegiately at Texas A&M.

He and his wife, Meredith, were high-school sweethearts and the Schefflers paint a portrait of a very unassuming life despite Scottie's jet-fueled rise to fame that began in 2022 when he claimed his first Masters title.

The process has only sped up over the last few months as Scheffler turned his gap over world No. 2 Rory McIlroy into more of a canyon.

Scheffler is an admitted homebody who prefers playing board games and relaxing by watching Instagram videos rather than indulging in the trappings of his success. He has won more than $61 million already in his career, including $18 million this season alone.

The Schefflers welcomed their first child , son Bennett, on May 8, leading Scottie to reflect recently on how his life has played out.

“I married my high school sweetheart and I always wanted to play professional golf, and now I’m here,” he said. “I was sitting there with a newborn in my arms and the green jacket in the closet. It was a pretty special time.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO SCHEFFLER AT THE PGA CHAMPIONSHIP?

Scheffler was attempting to get to Valhalla for an early stretch/workout ahead of his second-round tee time, initially scheduled for 8:48 a.m.

A vendor working at the course was struck and killed by a bus just after 5 a.m. while trying to cross a four-lane road. Traffic was backed up in both directions heading into the course while police conducted an investigation.

Scheffler was driving past the scene at around 6 a.m. when a police officer told him to stop. Police say the officer attached himself to the vehicle Scheffler was operating. Scheffler stopped, and the officer ordered Scheffler out of the car before putting him in handcuffs.

Louisville police say the officer was sent to the hospital after being dragged “to the ground” and suffering “pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist” after Scheffler's vehicle “accelerated forward."

A spokesperson for Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said Saturday there is no police body camera video of the initial encounter between Scheffler and the officer. The officer was directing traffic at the time, and the department’s officers typically don’t record video with their body cameras while directing traffic, Kevin Trager, the mayor’s press secretary, wrote in a text message to an Associated Press reporter.

Scheffler was booked at 7:28 a.m. — about 2 1/2 hours before his updated tee time after the second round was delayed because of the fatality. He donned an orange jumpsuit and had his mugshot taken before being released. Scheffler said in a statement he never intended to break any traffic laws, expressed sympathy for the “tragic accident” and detailed the sequence of events that led to his arrest as a “big misunderstanding.”

The world's top-ranked golfer then returned to Valhalla just after 9 a.m., emerging from the clubhouse about 20 minutes later to begin preparations for his round. Wearing a white hat and quarter-zip jacket, he received an ovation as he made his way to the driving range, with one fan yelling “Free Scottie!”

There was a sense of normalcy as Scheffler went through his routine. Fellow PGA Tour player Brendon Todd greeted Scheffler by saying “good to see you." Todd then showed Scheffler something on Todd's phone, drawing a small chuckle from both.

Scheffler joined playing partners Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman at the 10th tee, with the gallery erupting when Scheffler was introduced. Scheffler's initial tee shot found the right rough, though he eventually stuffed his approach shot on the par-5 to 3 feet and tapped in for birdie.

By the time Scheffler was at the midpoint of his round, fans were already wearing white “Free Scottie” T-shirts as they stood behind the ropes a few yards away.
