Road trip to mechuka in arunachal pradesh.

Visiting Mechuka had been a dream ever since I saw the beautiful posts from this pristine valley of Arunachal Pradesh on various social media platforms. However, I had not envisioned it to come true so soon. When my invitation to Basar Confluence was confirmed, I was ecstatic to know that I will also be heading for another festival hosted by Adventure @ Mechuka with the same travel bloggers group.

Where is Mechuka?

It is situated at 6000 feet above sea level in the West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. It is also known as the Forbidden Valley of Arunachal Pradesh since it was inaccessible by road until 2003 when Dalai Lama visited the 400-year-old monastery. About 30 KMs from the McMahon line separating India and China. It was previously used as a strategic military landing strip during the Sino-Indian War of 1962.

Mechuka Valley, Arunachal Pradesh

After spending a week and sharing such beautiful moments together in Basar, we all had become one huge family. Even though it broke our hearts to leave Basar, we were looking forward to our next set of adventures together at the forbidden valley of Arunachal Pradesh which we had heard so much about. A traveler bus was arranged for our entire tour. Thus we set off early morning toward our destination. Normally, it takes around 9-10 hours to reach Mechuka from Basar.

We stopped a couple of times on the way for Tea and Lunch. The road from Basar goes via Along. The journey was a comfortable hilly ride with moderate road conditions. The highlight of the journey was, however, the snow-capped mountain that showed itself more with every turn we took, indicating how close we are to our destination.

How to reach Mechuka from Guwahati/Silapathar/Itanagar

  • From Guwahati, one can board Lachit Express to Silapathar (9.5 hour’s journey) or Donyi Polo Express to Naharlagun.
  • From Silapathar, shared taxis are available to Along (around 6 hours).
  • And from Naharlagun, shared taxis are available to Itanagar (a 40-minute ride). Then change over to taxis heading towards Along (around 8 hours). Halt the night at Along. Book another shared taxi from Along which usually is available in the early morning (8-hour journey).

We were about to reach the town when our vehicle broke down. The weather was getting cold. We had to lock ourselves up until the driver arranged another vehicle for the rest of the journey. It was dark by the time we reached the village. But the moon was shining and the mountains glittered in its light. We turned in for the night at the homestays arranged for us. Looking forward to the days ahead with beautiful vistas that we had heard so much about.

Places to stay in Mechuka

Due to the recent influx of tourists in the valley, many families have opened up their homes as homestays with basic facilities. Some of them are – Gayboo’s traditional lodge, Grace homestay, Yargyap Chhu homestay, etc. All these are within walking distance of the town.

The team organized a 3-day festival. It was inaugurated by Salman Khan and the Honorable Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju. The team organized various adventurous activities like Rafting, Kayaking, Paragliding, etc during the daytime. Evenings were reserved for cultural programs with performances by bands from different parts of the country. Since the days were very short (it gets dark by 4 PM), we decided to spend days exploring the valley. And enjoy the cultural shows at the event grounds in the evening.

Exploring Mechuka

The roads were beautiful with the myriad fall colors of the trees and followed the bluish Siyom/Siang river. The majestic river is one of the main tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra and originates in Tibet.

Hanuman Camp

Hanuman Camp

A viewpoint overlooking a hill with the natural formation of a face resembling Hanuman on it. Hanuman temple has also been built nearby. The natural architecture was possibly carved out due to erosion. But garnered the attention of all tourists as it truly resembled the face of the ardent devotee of Lord Ram in Indian mythology. This is also the last permanent camp of the army before the McMahon Line. The borderline separates the Tibetan region of China and the Northeast region of India. Yarlung, the border village in India is 25-30 KMs from the Hanuman camp.

Guru Nanak Taposthan and Gurudwara

Guru Nanak Taposthan & Gurudwara

The popular legend goes that Guru Nanak meditated on these spots on his way to Tibet. Two Gurudwaras were constructed in his honor (maintained by the Indian Army) by the Siyom River. There is a local story that Guru Nanak was once attacked by a wild bear while he was meditating. But the huge boulder under which he was meditating lifted him up and protected him. Another story goes that Guru Nanak once wanted to cross the river but there was a huge rock standing in his way. So, the rock got split into two, making a passage for him to pass. This thin passage is still available. It is said that only those true of the heart can pass through it, no matter what their body sizes are.

There is also a beautiful waterfall near the second Gurudwara in which the Guru was believed to have taken a bath. There was a small cavity filled with black and white pebbles, which lay hidden under the water. It is said that if a person picks a pebble and it turns out to be white, his wish is going to come true. And no matter how many times he tries thereafter, he/she will not be able to pick a pebble of a different color.

Samten Yongcha Monastery

The monastery was built in the 14th century atop a hill on the western edge of Mechuka Valley. We started our journey from the event grounds to the nearest base of the Monastery on a traveler. It is around 14 KMs from town. We had to get down near the bridge because the big vehicle could not drive up. Though smaller vehicles can go all the way. We walked up the hill though not strenuous it was a bit lengthy.

The road covered all the way with tall pine trees was beautiful which offered panoramic views at many points. We saw some blue-colored berries which we found to be edible (tangy in taste like gooseberry). Once we reached the top, the view took our breath away. I climbed up the stairs of the monastery. Sat down facing the valley with the bluish Siyom river flowing through just like a painting. I sat there for a long time, under the prayer flags. Others got busy exploring the monastery.

Guru Padmasambhava

Soon, I had to drag myself away to see what is inside the monastery. The ancient monastery has beautiful statues of Guru Padmasambhava, masks, traditional musical instruments, and prayers left by devotees.

The 400-year-old monastery is a two-storeyed building. Made entirely out of wood and has a divine old-world charm to it. There were some antique stone inscriptions stored inside. The monastery is believed to be older than the Tawang Monastery and is maintained by the local people. It is one of the most visited spots for locals and tourists alike.

Dzogchen Samten Choeling Monastery

The new monastery is situated close to the town. But failed to provide the charm of the older one.

Located about 12 KMs away Dorjeeling is a picturesque village with little wooden houses, farms, and blue streams. It is not a tourist spot. But a quaint little village where one can sit down and appreciate the surroundings. There is a small Buddhist Monastery in the village.

Sika Dido Waterfalls

The Siko Dido waterfalls in Irgo is a towering waterfall, surrounded by rocks covered in green moss. Though this waterfall lies on the way, it is worth stopping over.

Wooden Bridges and Wild Horses

These are a common sight around. Wild horses can be seen grazing lazily over the valley. The wooden bridges, held by steel wires are an absolute delight for photographers. Often overlooking the beautiful hills over the Siyom River.

Tribals of Mechuka, Arunachal

This place is home to the people of the Ramo (Adi), Memba, Bokar, and Libo tribes. They are believed to have Tibeto-Mongoloid origins. They follow various religions like Buddhism, Donyi-Poloism, and Christianity. And speak in Memba, Adi, Hindi, and English languages.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is when the roads are not affected by the weather ie. post-monsoon months between October and March.

After spending three magical days, we set off for our return to our respective home cities. Since most of us had flights from Dibrugarh, we decided to leave for Pasighat and spend the night there. The Bogibeel Bridge, which was recently inaugurated by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi was not operational then. Hence we had to cross over to Dibrugarh via ferry from Bogibeel ghat. Sun was just dipping over the mighty Brahmaputra river coloring the sky and the river in all hues of orange.

Bogibeel bridge over Brahmaputra river

Transportation to Dibrugarh

Take a shared taxi heading towards Along. Then take another shared taxi to Silapathar. Local taxis are available to and from Bogibeel Ghat. Ferry to and from Dibrugarh ply at regular intervals. However, with the inauguration of the Bogibeel Bridge, direct road transport options are also available between Dibrugarh and Silapathar.

Important points to remember

  • Inner Line Permits (ILP) are absolutely necessary to enter and travel in Arunachal Pradesh. They are easily obtainable on arrival or online .
  • Mobile networks are scarcely available. There is only a BSNL tower, which does not work sometimes. Only one PCO in the town in case of emergency.
  • Carry warm clothes and proper shoes. Mercury goes down to sub-zero temperatures in winter with snowfall.
  • Mainly Tibetan food is available. But one may get a few more options in the town. Recommended you carry some ready-to-eat meals if you have limited food preferences.
  • It is better to carry cash before proceeding. There is only one State Bank of India ATM, which runs out of cash.

This guide will cover everything you need to know before visiting Mechuka, including travel permits, the best time to visit, a recommended itinerary, places to stay, and things to see and do. So, pack your bags, and let’s embark on this remarkable adventure!

Best time to visit Mechuka:

The best time to visit Mechuka is from October to May. The weather conditions are charming during these months, making your trip very restful.

During October and November, the weather is pleasant with clear skies, providing excellent visibility of the surrounding landscapes. If you visit during these months, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the beauty of Mechuka’s landscapes without extreme weather conditions.

From December to February, you can experience the winter charm of Mechuka, with a possibility of snowfall. The entire region transforms into a winter wonderland, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and picturesque landscapes.

As March approaches, the weather starts to warm up, and Mechuka showcases vibrant colours with blooming flowers and lush vegetation. The landscapes become more vibrant, making it a perfect time for nature enthusiasts and photographers.

It’s important to note that the monsoon season (June to September) may have challenging road conditions due to heavy rainfall. Plan your visit accordingly and check the weather before travelling to Mechuka.

Permits required to enter Arunachal Pradesh:

It could be noticed that Arunachal Pradesh imparts its boundaries to China which is the essential justification for why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for tourists.

To enter Arunachal Pradesh, there are two permits required: Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian residents and Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Foreign Nationals.

1. Inner Line Permit (ILP) for Indian residents:

Indian residents require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh, here’s how to obtain an ILP:

  • Online Application: The most convenient way to obtain an ILP is through the Arunachal Pradesh EILP website . Fill out the application form with the necessary details, such as personal information, purpose of visit, duration of stay, etc. Pay the required fees online and submit the application.
  • Offline Application: If you prefer a manual application, visit the Deputy Resident Commissioner’s Office in major cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, New Delhi, or Itanagar. You can also go to ILP facilitation centres at Naharlagun Railway Station, Gumto Railway Station, and Guwahati airport. Another option is visiting Asom Paryatan Bhawan in Guwahati. Provide the necessary documents and pay the fees at the office.

After the submission of your application, the ILP will be issued, usually on the same day if applied online or within a few working days if applied manually. Make sure to carry a printed copy of the ILP while travelling in Arunachal Pradesh, as you may be asked to present it at various checkpoints.

2. Protected Area Permit (PAP) for Foreign Nationals:

Foreign nationals are required to get a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. Here’s how to obtain a PAP:

  • Indian Missions Abroad: Foreign nationals can apply for a PAP at Indian missions abroad, such as the Indian Embassy or Consulate in their home country. Submit the required documents, including a copy of the passport, visa, and other relevant details. The mission will process the application and issue the PAP.
  • Home Ministry: Alternatively, foreign nationals can apply for a PAP through the Ministry of Home Affairs in India. This can be done by visiting the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in major cities or applying online on e-FRRO online Portal. Submit the necessary documents, pay the fees, and await the processing of the application.

It’s important to note that the process for obtaining a PAP may take longer than an ILP. Therefore, it is advisable to apply well in advance of your planned visit to Arunachal Pradesh. Once the PAP is issued, carry a printed copy of the permit along with your passport while travelling in the state, as it may be checked at various checkpoints.

Remember to check the official government websites or contact the relevant authorities for the most up-to-date information regarding permits, as the requirements and procedures may change over time.

How to get into Arunachal Pradesh?

To begin our itinerary, the first step is to reach Aalo in Arunachal Pradesh. It is the closest main town to Mechuka, located about 180 kilometres away. Here are the ways to reach Aalo:

Book a flight to Dibrugarh Airport in Mohanbari, Assam. This airport is the nearest and most convenient option, with flights available from different places.

Upon landing in Dibrugarh, you can take public transport, shared sumo or hire a private cab to reach Aalo. The journey from Dibrugarh to Aalo takes approximately 4-5 hours.

As a plus, you’ll be able to drive across the Bhramaputra on the Bogibeel Bridge, which is a spectacle.

Since there is no direct train to Aalo, there are three main railway services you can take to get as close as possible to Aalo.

  • Guwahati-Silapathar-Aalo:

Silapathar is the closest railway station to Aalo (about 140 km away), but there are no direct trains to it. You can take a train to Guwahati from different parts of the country and then catch the Lachit Express to Silapathar. Then upon reaching Silapathar, you can hire a shared or private cab to travel to Aalo.

  • New Delhi-Dibrugarh-Aalo:

You can board the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express from New Delhi, which will take you to Dibrugarh in 38 hours. From Dibrugarh, you can hire a cab or take a bus that will drop you to Aalo in about 5 hours.

  • New Delhi-Naharlagun-Aalo:

The Arunachal AC SF Express service is available once a week, taking you from Delhi to Naharlagun in 37 hours. After reaching Naharlagun, you can hire a cab, shared Sumo or take a bus to reach Aalo, which takes approximately 7 hours.

After the long and tiring journey to Aalo, you will need to find accommodation for a night. On the following day, we will head towards Mechuka.

Where to stay in Aalo?

  • Reyi homestay
  • Hotel Toshi Palace
  • Capital O 69945 P&p Resort

Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary for visiting Mechuka:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Mechuka from Aalo

Day 2: Explore Mechuka

Day 3: yarlung camp, gurudwara & taposthan, day 4: dorjeeling village, day 5: the journey ends, day 1: start your journey from aalo.

The journey to discover Arunachal Pradesh’s hidden gem begins with a road trip from Aalo for approximately 6-8 hours.

From this point onward, our entire travel will be by car on the road. You can use a Sumo transport service to travel, as it is effectively accessible in every part of Arunachal Pradesh, or you can choose to hire a private cab for the next five days.

As you leave Aalo and travel up two or three thousand feet towards Mechuka, you may witness how the air and landscape change decisively with elevation.

After a pleasant six-hour journey, you will reach Mechuka, a breathtaking valley located in the West Siang district.

Once you arrive, find a place to stay and wait for the night to pass. The following day, we will begin exploring this beautiful town.

Where to stay in Mechuka?

  • Gayboo’s Traditional Homestay
  • Potala Homestay
  • Yargyap Chhu Homestay
  • The Myst Hotel

On our first day in Majestic Mechuka, we will climb the epic mountain Mechuka La.

It will take a few hours to get to the top of the cliff. You can take some food with you and enjoy it on the top by watching the gorgeous view of Mechuka and the surroundings of snow-capped peaks. The total hike duration may lie between 4 to 6 hours, depending on how quickly you complete it.

Spend the rest of the day interacting with the local people of Mechuka and learning new things about the area. You will find that the majority of the individuals belong to the Memba tribe and a Tibeto-monoid ethnic group that follows Buddhism.

Mechuka La Mountain

On the next day in Mechuka, we will brace towards the Yarlung Army Camp. It is the final point before the Indo-china border where civilians are permitted to enter without any special permission. Here you can meet the Indian army and hear brave stories about them.

Note: Taking photos and shooting videos are restricted in the area.

On the way back from Yarlung camp, we can stop at a small Hanuman temple. Here you can find the naturally carved face of Lord Hanuman on a rugged mountain cliff.

Thenceforth, drive to the Gurudwara to pay your regards. This Gurudwara has a prayer hall, Langar, and a museum. It was established and managed by an Indian army to commemorate the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on his journey to Tibet between 1516-1517.

Across the Gurudwara, there is a Guru Nanak Taposthan known to have impressions of Guru Nanak Ji. To enter Taposthan, you need to pass through a narrow passage in the mountain that opens into an enchanting forest by the riverside. And there is a myth that if you are a sinner, you will fail to pass the passage. After spending some time at the riverside hearing the peaceful stem of the river, head back to your stay in Mechuka.

Mechuka Itinerarya

Located crossing the Yargepchu River is the Dorjeeling Village, which has scenic mountain views. It will roughly take 20 to 25 minutes to reach Dorjeeling from Mechuka.

This village has various picturesque scenes with hanging bridges and a small Monastery. After exploring the village end back to our stay in Mechuka

It is time to bid farewell to Mechuka. Get up early and travel back to Guwahati/ Dibrugarh by following the same route we took to get here.

Mechuka Travel Guide: All You Wish To Know!

Mechuka, Arunachal Pradesh‘s hidden wonderland, is still largely unknown to tourists. Mechuka travel guide is considered one of the most beautiful valleys in India’s easternmost state and can give you severe wanderlust. Mechuka, nestled between snow-capped mountains, is a lesser-known and known as the forgotten valley. The valley is the picture-perfect postcard destination in Arunachal Pradesh for discerning travelers, surrounded by giant mountains, virgin forests, vast meadows, quaint villages, fluttering prayer flags, rhythmic Yargyap Chhu (Siyom River), hanging bridges, grazing horses, and sacred Buddhist monasteries. The scattered multicolored wooden cottages, flanked by mountains, give the impression of an Italian town.

Table of Contents

Where is Mechuka Valley?

Mechuka is a small attractive valley in the Shi-Yomi region of Arunachal Pradesh , located over 6000 feet above sea level and just 29 kilometres from the famed McMahon line separating India and China. During the 1962 Indo-China War, it was used as a strategic military landing strip. The valley’s actual name is Menchhukha, although it’s more often known as Mechuka. In the local language, the name literally translates to “medicinal snow water.” Memba, Ramo, Bokar, and Lingbo are the four primary tribes that live in the valley. The panoramic sight of magnificent landscapes can leave you astonished.

The surreal beauty paints nature’s most visually spectacular painting in front of your eyes, with grazing wild horses in the grassland on the river’s bank, wooden bridges with colorful Buddhist prayer flags, fresh air, blue sky, and fluffy cotton ball-like clouds, and dotted scattered dwellings.

How to reach Mechuka Travel Guide?

The true reason why this place is exclusive is due to the connectivity which was not at all good before a few years. Mechuka is not really known even by some people from the Northeast itself but it is gradually becoming visible on the tourist map. Mechuka is a great destination to visit if you enjoy slow travel and don’t mind driving a few additional kilometers on a bumpy road to see something unusual in a faraway land.   Mechuka is a remote valley in Arunachal Pradesh that requires a long journey split into several places to reach. For those traveling down to Assam via Dibrugarh or Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India, there are two main routes.

Route:  Guwahati- Silapathar/Murkongselek-Aalo-Mechuka

Dibrugarh- Silapathar/Murkongselek-Aalo-Mechuka

1. Suppose you are flying into Dibrugarh from Guwahati or another region of the country. In that case, you will need to take a cab from Dibrugarh covering Silapathar, Jonai, and Pasighat, crossing the newly opened Bogibeel Bridge to reach Aalo. Spend the night in Aalo and take another shared cab the next day from Aalo to Mechuka.

2. If you fly into Guwahati and wish to travel to Mechuka, take the Lachit Express to Silapathar or Murkongselek. Silapatha is 9.5 to 10 hours away, from where you can take a shared cab to Aalo. In about 6 hours, you’ll arrive in Aalo (also known as Along). Spend the night in Aalo before continuing on to Mechuka in a shared cab the next day. To get to Mechuka, you’ll have to drive for another 8 hours.

3. From Guwahati, board the Donyi Polo Express to Naharlagun. From Naharlagun to Itanagar, shared taxis are available. It will take about 40 minutes to complete. After that, take a shared cab from Itanagar to Along. The travel will take approximately 8 hours. Stay the night at Along. Early in the morning, take another shared cab to Mechuka. On hilly terrain, it will take roughly 8 hours.

Places to see in Mechuka

Siko-dido waterfall.

On your route to Mechuka, don’t miss the beautiful Siko Dido Waterfalls. This is a sight to behold, located in Irgo village, a few kilometres before Mechuka. The magnificent vertical waterfalls, which cascade water from a height of 200 feet, are a spectacular marvel and should not be missed. A stop in Siko Dido is worthwhile due to its location on a major road.

Samtenyangchag Monastery

The 400-year-old monastery of Samtenyangchag Monastery is one of Mechuka’s must-see attractions. The monastery is situated on a hilltop 14 kilometres from Mechuka town. Small vehicles can drive up to the top, but if you don’t have a vehicle, you’ll have to hike up. The sloping path leading up to the monastery is pretty lovely. Along with the route, one may enjoy the tranquility of the landscapes, hills, and villages below.

The Samtenyangchag Monastery has a unique structure compared to other monasteries. The two-story wooden structure houses Guru Padmasambhava statues, ancient inscriptions, traditional masks, musical instruments, and other items. There are no monks living in the area.

During festivals, monks come to this monastery. The monastery is looked after by a single keeper on the site. The monastery is said to predate the well-known Tawang Monastery.

The monastery’s flying prayer flags provide a rainbow of colors to the scene. From the mountaintop, the panoramic view of the Mechuka valley looks extremely breathtaking.

The cherry on top, it feels absolutely amazing to sit over there, sipping butter tea offered by the caretaker, giggling with your travel companions, and overlooking the gorgeous Mechuka valley.

Gurudwara and Guru Nanak Taposthan

One of the features is the Gurudwara’s serene location. You will also be astounded by the Indian Army’s generosity, which includes offering tea and inviting you to join them for Langar (free food) served to visitors to the Gurudwara during lunchtime. The drive from Mechuka town to this location is dreamlike, passing through wildflowers, beautiful landscapes, and brooks.

Guru Nanak Taposthan, created by soldiers from the Sikh military in the 1980s, is another must-see in Mechuka. The Gurudwara is perched on a hill overlooking the river. Guru Nanak is said to have paused here and meditated on his route to Tibet, according to folklore. The taposthan is a sacred cave devoted to Guru Nanak, featuring impressions of his turban and his two disciples reported to be carved into a large rock. However, locals claim that rumours of an unspoken rivalry between the villagers and the Indian Army’s Sikhs have been circulating for some time. “Those are genuinely the impressions of our Guru Rinpoche when he meditated within the cave,” the locals explain, “but the Sikhs appear to believe otherwise, so we have let them believe it since we don’t want any problems. “The Indian Army maintains the Gurudwara that was established in his honor.

Walking down from the cave through an extremely narrow mountain cleft will lead you to a most charming forest beside the river.  “If you have sinned, you will not be able to pass through the gap in the mountain,” every local or guide warns when you question the place. A river flows beside it, coming from a nearby small waterfall, and folklore has it that these waters determine one’s fate. What you choose from a collection of white, black, and grey stones determines your future luck. White represents happiness and success, grey represents a period of hardship before happiness, and black represents bad luck and darkness.

Dorjeeling village

Dorjeeling village is like a hidden gem in a faraway region of North East India. The village is dotted with scattered cottages, huge grassland with grazing horses, and swaying tall grasses, and the Siyom River flows gently through it. On the road, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone. Mountains that tower over you appear to be a protective barrier. The mesmerizing tranquil vistas of the village will have you torn between truth and fantasy. The hillock’s scattered wooden homes can tempt you to leave everything behind and spend a calm life in the hills. The best way to see the village is on foot. The river Siyom is crossed by hanging bridges.

Hanuman camp

Another prominent attraction in Mechuka is the “Hanuman rock face,” a natural rock structure in the hills that resembles Hanuman (Hindu God). There is also a Hanuman Temple. Nearby is also a permanent Indian Army camp there, which is the final camp before the Indo-Tibetan border and is only 29 kilometres from the town.

Hanging bridges

Mechuka is the place to go if you’re interested in hanging suspension bridges. Over the river Siyom, you’ll come across a number of ancient hanging bridges. The villages on both sides of the river are connected by these shaky bridges. Locals have no concerns about using it for their daily journey. Walking across the swollen river on those wooden plank bridges is quite a challenge since they cling together with the help of two iron rods on both sides that can be utilized for support.

Dzogchen Samtan Choeling monstery

This is a freshly built monastery atop a hillside in Mechuka that is easily accessible. It doesn’t have the same allure as the old monastery. The panoramic view of Mechuka town from the top is the sole thing the monastery has to offer. The view of the town, as well as the surrounding hills and massive mountain range, from the white enormous chortens is simply breathtaking.

Meet the local tribes when in Mechuka

Memba, Ramo, Bokar, and Lingbo, are the four primary tribes of Arunachal Pradesh that live in the valley. The Memba make up the majority and live in Mechuka’s main town, whilst the Adi, who live on the outskirts of town, practice Donyi-Poloism (sun and moon) and adore nature. Outside every house are flags that signify the members’ faith or belief system, such as Buddhist prayer flags for Buddhist families or the white with red dot flag for Donyi-Polo believers.

Where to stay in Mechuka?

Many families have opened up their homes as homestays with modest facilities in response to the increasing inflow of tourists in the valley and therefore, it is not difficult to find a homestay upon reaching there.

The best part is that the hosts of almost all homestays are very welcoming and it is very obvious that you will be invited to their fireplace to warm up yourself by having a cup of butter tea, red tea, chang (millet beer), Sen chang(rice beer) or Ara(local beer) sitting beside the Bukhari. A Bukhari is a traditional space heater, which is usually a wood-burning fireplace. Bukharis are made up of a wide cylindrical fire chamber at the bottom that burns wood, charcoal, or other fuel, and a narrower cylinder on top that serves to heat the room and works as a chimney.

Adventure in Mechuka

All regions of the Northeast are filled with one or adventure and so is Mechuka. Adventure@Mechuka is an annual festival held in Mechuka with the goal of promoting the area as a destination for adventure tourism. Despite the fact that the event is largely arranged as an adventure festival, culture, and music are also a big component of the festivities. Paragliding, Kayaking, rafting, and other sorts of adventure are enjoyed during the festival as well as at the other time of the year.

Food in Mechuka

In Mechuka, the major dishes are thukpa, chowmein, rice with dal, meat, and veggies, and momos. Your best chance is to dine at your homestay; the food is freshly prepared in the kitchen area, and it’s a terrific way to communicate with your hosts. Around the main market area, there are also a few cafes and restaurants.

Other things to know

1 .  It is recommended to withdraw money from Aalo for your stay in Mechuka. The main market in Mechuka has one State Bank ATM; however it frequently runs out of cash. It goes without saying that it is a little village where card payments are not accepted.

2 .  In Mechuka, there are no buses or shared vehicles. Obtain a vehicle through your homestay or by walking/hiking. Once you reach the valley, these are your only alternatives.

3 .  There are numerous wine shops at the market. For frigid nights, stock up on Ara, Chang, and Rice Beer. Some of this will be available to you back at your homestay from your host.

4 . After Aalo, there is no cell phone network. In Mechuka, BSNL is the only service provider with a poor network. There are no internet cafes or hotspots in the area. Carry a ready-to-explore heart.

Mechuka (also known as Menchukha) is a beautiful border village, located in the higher reaches of the newly carved Shi-Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. Cozily tucked away in the upper mountain folds of the Siyom Valley, Mechuka in Arunachal is set amidst a dramatic amphitheater of alpine grasslands, wide river valleys and beautiful hanging bridges lined with Tibetan prayer flags.

The frontier town lies just a few kms away from the Indo-Tibet Border, enthralling its visitors with its geographical isolation and its unspoiled charm. Unmotorable until not so long ago, Mechuka in Arunachal can be reached via rugged mountain routes that travel along the Siyom river and enter the breathtaking Yargyap Chu valley.

Despite the improvement in roads, the area still remains delightfully secluded from the rest of the world, thus offering a perfect peaceful escape for all. Mechuka’s allure lies not only in its physical environs and natural beauty but also in the captivating stories, legends and folktales woven into its fabric by its diverse tribal culture and historical legacy.

Experience Highlights

1. mesmerizing mechuka trek at the indo-tibet border.

Mountain Landscapes of Mechuka tour in Arunachal_Eka Experiences

Mechuka (also spelt as Menchukha) is a small valley town located in the upper reaches of the Shi-Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh. Also called the “Shangri-La of The Northeast”, the picturesque hamlet is nestled at an altitude of 6200 ft in an idyllic setting amidst the Eastern Himalayas.

Just 29 Kms from the McMahon Line or the Indo-Tibet Border, the frontier town is one of the best places to visit for border tourism in India.

Only recently made motorable through the remote hills of Siyom Valley, Mechuka in Arunachal was one of the several strategic locations during the 1962 war with China.

Because of its proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Air Force has an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) right in the middle of the town. A visit to the Yarlung Army Camp close to the Tibetan border ((subject to permissions)) is a unique highlight of this Arunachal Tour.

The name Mechuka is made up of three local words that literally means the “medicinal water of snow”. The melted water streams flowing through Mechuka are believed to have medicinal properties.

The pristine Yagyap Chu flows through the salubrious environs of this valley and meets the Siyom river downstream. Flanked by sweeping meadows and lofty snow-clad mountains, Mechuka’s ethereal charm lies in its unspoiled surroundings and authentic cultural experiences.

Mainly home to buddhist Membas, the place is also inhabited by other tribes of the region namely, the Adi, Ramo, Bokar and Libo tribes. Most of these communities practice Mahayana Buddhism while some follow Donyi-Poloism and Christianity.

Mechuka’s remote location has helped preserve its natural splendor and cultural authenticity, making it a hidden gem in the Himalayas.

The monastery of Samtem Yongcha, said to be more than 500 years old, is a revered site in Mechuka. One of the oldest Buddhist monasteries of Arunachal Pradesh, even older than the great Tawang monastery, Samtem Yongcha belongs to the Mahayana sect of Buddhism.

From the ancient Buddhist monastery of the Samten Yongcha, to Guru Nanak‘s sacred meditation site and the legendary rock imprints of Hanuman, Mechuka is much more than its scenic beauty.

For visitors on this offbeat Arunachal Mechuka tour package, the place has an eclectic mix of amazing cultural attractions. The vast Yargyap Chu valley also offers exciting trekking opportunities for the adventure enthusiasts.

From short day treks to the Mechuka mountain to the longer treks like the Rinjinling mountains nearby or the Pasang Sonam Tso Lake trek, Mechuka is a great place for an active mountain holiday.

Overall, whether it’s the heavenly landscapes, the vibrant local traditions, the warm hospitality or the chance to disconnect from the modern world and connect with nature, Mechuka’s beauty is a harmonious blend of the scenic and the cultural.

It is indeed a captivating escape for those in search of an extraordinary and genuinely rejuvenating journey.

2. Aalo town and The Siyom Valley

The Siyom river originates from the upper reaches of the Eastern Himalayas close to the Indo-Tibet Border.

It carves out a scenic river valley that inhabits dozens of tiny villages in the Shi-Yomi and West Siang districts. Aalo (formerly known as ‘Along’) is one of the main towns located on the southern banks of Siyom on the way to Mechuka.

This remote riverside town is located about 100 Kms from Pasighat town and 310 Kms from the state capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar. The Headquarters of the West Siang District, Aalo is blessed with wide open views of the river valley.

The Siyom flows through here against a backdrop of verdant mountains and scenic natural surroundings. A considerable part of our journey on this Arunachal tour occurs along the Siyom valley.

As we move from Aalo towards Mechuka deeper into the Siyom valley, the road gradually climbs and offers multiple viewpoints. One of the highlights enroute to Mechuka along the Siyom is the Siko Dido waterfalls.

The breathtaking waterfall falling from a height of about 200 ft creates a magical setting and stands out as one of the scenic attractions along the way.

The Siyom valley not only offers impressive natural views but also presents a unique mix of culture and traditions in this pristine region of Arunachal.

The valley is the abode of various major and sub-tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. While primarily home to the Galo tribe, Aalo and its neighboring villages are also inhabited by Adi, Minyong, Bori, Bokar, Ramo, Memba and other tribes. Apart from Aalo town, on this curated Arunachal tour package, we also visit a local Galo tribal village located along the river.

A serene village walk is the best way to experience this charming village. Far removed from noise of the town area, the sleepy tribal hamlet with orange orchards, traditional huts and a thrilling hanging bridge provides an amazing insight into the slow life of the region.

3. Mechuka La and The Dorjeeling Village

Mechuka Dorjeeling Village_Eka Experiences

The Mechuka mountain, also called Mechuka La, is located on the eastern bank of the Yargyap Chu river overlooking the entire valley. An enormous ‘Menchukha’ sign with huge letters is inscribed at the top of the mountain. A thrilling short hike to the top involves climbing meadow ridges and rolling hills, on narrow, grassy trails.

With a mix of gradual and steep sections, the walk up to the top can be done in a few hours depending on the group’s pace. The scenery and the photos keep getting better as you go higher up.

Once you reach the open and windy summit, you are treated with bird’s eye views and a remarkable panorama that unfolds in front. A few minutes of silence in this completely secluded and peaceful spot is simply reinvigorating.

With sweeping views of the entire Mechuka town, distant forested hills and snow-covered giant mountains beyond, this guided day trek is one of the most rewarding experiences of this Arunachal Mechuka Tour.

Down from the summit, we head out to the other side of the mountain in the adjoining valley, where another unforgettable highlight awaits. With its postcard-perfect settings, the charming village of Dorjeeling welcomes us with open arms.

Although the name sounds similar to the world-famous hill station of Bengal (‘Darjeeling’), the views of Dorjeeling village are quite distinct and different. With a handful of houses spread out on open grasslands, Dorjeeling is a sparsely populated hamlet located on the outskirts of Mechuka.

The quaint settlement is bounded by dense forests on one side and Mechuka mountain on the other and exudes a rustic charm with its surreal natural beauty.

Beautiful wooden huts, horses grazing on the meadows, a small monastery, rickety hanging bridges and a gentle, shallow crystal-clear stream flowing on stony river beds, all of these come together to create a fairytale-like setting here.

The undisturbed, slow environs of the place also add to the soothing visual treat to the eyes. For the visitors, a walk through the Dorjeeling village is an experience to remember.

4. Pasighat by the Mighty Siang

Situated at the eastern himalayan foothills on the bank of the Siang river, Pasighat is the oldest town of Arunachal Pradesh.

It is currently the headquarters of East Siang district of Arunachal. From a small village, the place slowly transformed into a major administrative center during the British Raj after the last Anglo-Abor War of 1912.

The local tribesmen were collectively Abors by the British. Earlier known as ‘Paklek’ meaning “Garden of Banana”, the British officers are said to have named the place ‘Pasighat’, from the word Pasi, a sub-tribe of the Adi.

Although the town is quite cosmopolitan in character with a mix of different tribes in the region, the Pasighat area is predominantly inhabited by the Minyong Adi natives. It has now become the main center of political, economic and cultural activities of the entire Siang belts.

With a huge chunk of the population from outside the region, Pasighat area has become a sort of mini-India where people from all over the country and also Arunachal Pradesh peacefully dwell.

The Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh flows by Pasighat. From Tibet, it enters India at Gelling in Upper Arunachal and then meanders its way through the hills to later form the Brahmaputra along with its two other main tributaries, Lohit and Dibang.

Along its course, the Siang river valley not only sustains a large number of villages but also has been shaping the cultural identity of the tribal natives since time immemorial. It is a symbol of vibrant power, energy, and dynamism for the inhabitants with countless folktales, legends and stories linking it to the local life.

On this curated and offbeat Arunachal Tour package, we travel along the mighty Siang to explore the historically significant Pasighat town and beyond. We visit a traditional Adi village on the banks of the Siang that still remains secluded from the modern world.

A journey to the village is like hopping on to a time capsule that takes us back in time. Travelling here requires crossing over a stunning hanging bridge suspended hundreds of feet above the riverbed.

The short hike on a forest trail offers splendid views of the bluish-green waters of the Siang. With its neatly terraced farms, enchanting forest settings and lazily flowing streams, a guided cultural walk through the village is a lifetime experience.

Beautiful, flexible and fun

We booked this trip last minute (~week prior) and were immediately helped with scheduling tours of the Kaziranga park and major attractions. Anushila picked us up at the airport in the most welcoming way. They adjusted the tour for our requests to see a tea plantation and the city where most silk production occurs, Sualkuchi. Both of these were excellent additions and allowed us to witness the strength and beauty in Assamese craft. Our trip to Kaziranga was perfect and we only wish we could have had more days to the 5 day trip Continue Reading

Our trip was great

We have just returned from a 7 days family trip to Assam Meghalaya with Nexplore Travel. As we have two kids we were worried for them initially but our trip was perfect. When we were planning the trip, Anu was fantastic in helping us customise the trip to our requirements and suggesting different options. We went to a few offbeat waterfalls in Meghalaya and the team is being happy to suggest different options and to be flexible. They also suggest the best places where we can travel safely with kids. Our drive Saikia was fantastic. He made sure that everything was OK without any problems. I would recommend NExplore Travel and would certainly travel with them again.

Via Dibrugarh: Fly or take a train to Dibrugarh, then a taxi to Aalo (around 7 hours). The next day, continue by taxi to Mechukha (7-8 hours). Start early to account for road work delays.

Via Guwahati: Fly or take a train to Guwahati. From there, take the Lachit Express to Silapathar and a taxi to Aalo. Stay overnight in Aalo and drive to Mechukha the next day. Alternatively, take the Donyi Polo Express to Naharlagun, then a taxi to Itanagar, followed by another cab to Aalo. After a night halt, proceed to Mechukha.

The best season to visit Mechukha is during non-monsoon periods, as the weather can be unpredictable. Magical Mechuka Tour [6 Days] – Off-beat Arunachal Pradesh

While a road trip to Tawang is more popular and heard of, when it comes to Arunachal Pradesh tours, the eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh is arguably more beautiful and culturally rich than the western. Rawer , if you know what we mean. Hence, this Mechuka tour 🙂

This Mechuka Tour – a road trip to Mechuka is, put simply, an experience of a lifetime. One of the best experiences in North East India tailored around local tribal experiences. From gorgeous mountains to breathtaking valleys, from scattered tiny little tribal hamlets to the beautiful town of Mechuka, which seems to be at the end of the world, this one-week Mechuka trip has everything that a mountain lover would dream of, and then, some more.

  • Day 1 – Dibrugarh to Along/Aalo
  • Day 2 – Along/Aalo to Mechuka
  • Day 3 – Mechuka local sightseeing & hike to Mechuka-la
  • Day 4 – Mechuka local sightseeing
  • Day 5 – Mechuka – Along/Aalo
  • Day 6 – Along/Aalo to Dibrugarh

The detailed Mechuka itinerary will be as laid out below:

Day 1: Dibrugarh to Along/Aalo

The nearest airport and railhead for a trip to Mechuka is Dibrugarh, in Assam. We begin our one-week Mechuka tour from here. On landing in the morning, you will be received by North East Explorer’s representative. Keep your Arunachal Pradesh ILP (that we would have already sent you) ready, as we start our journey towards the Assam-Arunachal border, slowly leaving Dibrugarh behind.

Dibrugarh to Along is a beautiful drive so, multiple photo stops along the way are expected. Don’t shy away from requesting your driver-cum guide to stop and let you breathe in the fresh mountain air of Arunachal Pradesh.

After a gorgeous drive, by early evening, you will check in to your gorgeous homestay in Along. This tastefully done homestay can be considered a small destination in itself. After a quick check-in, head out on foot to check out the surroundings. Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day 🙂 .

Day 2: Along/Alo to Mechuka

If yesterday made you feel you have come to a very remote part of North East India, wait to see what happens today! Today is the day when you finally set foot in Mechuka, the real off-beat North East India . Not long after you leave Along, you will lose any phone connectivity that you might have, for the next few days. Suddenly, the surroundings start feeling denser and you will come across fellow humans, less and less.

You will notice traditional stilted homes dotting your way as you move ahead. The architecture in these parts of Arunachal Pradesh is quite different from what you get to see when you are on an Arunachal Pradesh tour , in the Eastern part of the state.

As you snake ahead on the mostly bumpy roads, lost in the grandeur of the surroundings, the Siyom River will keep you company for a good part of the day. While this off-beat part of Arunachal Pradesh does not boast many waterfalls, it has a pretty gorgeous one. The Siko-Dido waterfall  falls on the way to Mechuka from Along.

By evening, check in to your simple homestay and warm yourselves up by sitting by the bukhari.

Day 3: Exploring Mechuka

After a good night’s sleep and breakfast by the kitchen fire of your homestay, it is finally now time to explore Mechuka. Things to see in Mechuka , as they say.

We begin our day by visiting the New Gompa. Spend some time walking around and appreciating the simplicity of the surroundings. From there, we will move to one of the best things to do in Mechuka.

A hike to the Mechuka-la!

It’s a relaxed hike with beautiful views on every side. The scenery keeps getting better as you go higher up. Once at the top, the view of Mechuka town is simply beyond words. Sit there and just enjoy the moment.

Being in this remote place, far away from almost everyone you know, and yet feeling very much at peace, the time spent here, doing nothing but being yourself, will stay with you for a long time.

From here, we will then visit the small but beautiful Dorjelling village and meet some of the locals to get to know about their life here. From Dorjelling, we then go for a quick visit to the Tsokorphu village.

After which, we head back to your homestay for some rest.

As a last thing and one of the best things to do when in Mechuka, we will head to the Yargapchu River to spend some time in these beautiful surroundings.

Day 4: Things to See in Mechuka

After spending the last day exploring things to see in Mechuka, we will focus on the best places to visit around Mechuka. After breakfast at our homestay, we start our day by first driving up to the Old Gompa in Mechuka.

We spend time at this 400-year-old monastery, talking to the caretaker of the Gompa and appreciating the history that the place has been a guardian.

Not to mention, the trail leading up to this historic place is sure to mesmerize you every second of the time you are there.

From there, we will then drive to the Lhalung village to see the Old Tibet road. This road has a lot of history attached to it. From there, we head to the Mechuka gurudwara, which is one of the most revered places in Mechuka. It is said that Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, on his way back from Tibet, had spent some time here in Mechuka and had meditated at this very place.

The Gurunanak Tapasthan in Mechuka is maintained by the Indian army.

Once back in town, we will head to the market for some local lunch and then explore it. The evening is mostly free to roam around.

Day 5: Mechuka to Alo/Along

After spending 3 nights in Mechuka while on this off-beat Arunachal Pradesh tour, we start our return journey, in the morning.

The bright side of leaving early is the fact that we will get time to explore the tribal village(s) in and around Aalo. Walking through a tribal village, according to us, is one of the best ways to get a  feel  of the place and to meet and interact with the locals.

By evening, check in to your homestay and spend time relaxing and reminiscing about the past few days. Also, you will finally have decent mobile phone connectivity, if all is well 🙂

Day 6: Alo/Along To Dibrugarh

We start on the final leg of our journey after breakfast today. Retracing the same path we took less than a week back, on our way to Mechuka, we make our way to the plains of Assam.

Our hearts filled with countless memories from the past few days and dreams to be back again, sometime soon.

With the drop in Dibrugarh, finally, a wonderful trip comes to an end. But it’s just the trip that has come to an end, your relationships with the lovely people you have met in the course of the past few days, have only begun 🙂 .

You can very easily club this Mechuka trip with a tour to Namdhapa National Park and Dong valley , Anini Tour , Kaziranga tour , a Majuli tour, or even a Tawang tour  if you have more days to spare.

BOOK THIS TOUR

** Mechuka being a very remote destination, has very limited connectivity, almost all the way. Other than BSNL, nothing really works once you leave Along. So, it is better to let your folks back home know that, in all probability, you will have no connectivity for the better part of the next week. ** Due to the large-scale road construction going on in this part of Arunachal Pradesh, Mechuka is accessible only for a limited time in a year. That is, only during the dry winter season. ** Please note that we will be crossing through / staying at some of the most remote parts of the region. Hence, while we will try our best to make your trip as comfortable as possible, please keep in mind that the logistics and facilities will be limited due to obvious reasons. ** Photo credits – Saikat Ganguly

A Place Where I Found My Lost Self: Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh

A Place Where I Found My Lost Self: Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh

The blog is contributed by one of our readers Sumit Misra who had recently visited Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh . This lesser known destination in Northeast India boasts its surreal landscape, unmatched tranquillity, and a number of exciting activities. The blog takes us on remarkable sojourn and compel us to plan a trip as soon as possible.

Running for basic needs and managing things on my own, millennial responsibility took on me and I lost my passion for almost everything I loved. Travelling, writing, and exploring nature became the last things I could give my time to. But after watching Facebook videos of travel bloggers, my conscience pricked me and I had to convince myself to pack my bags and tick off from my travel bucket list the offbeat location in Arunachal Pradesh, “Mechuka-The Land of Magical Water & Snow”.

The Planning

IMAGE1

It all started with a call from one of my travel buddies who called me a few months back and asked me to plan a trip to this lesser known destination of Northeast India. After hundreds of calls and discussions we finally decided to pack our bags and did all the necessary bookings of 5th to 9th October 2019 to cover every place in Mechuka.

The day finally arrived and we were uber thrilled for the trip. But as we all know ‘plan k hisab se kuch nahi hota (things don’t go as planned)’ is a true story, we struggled when our cab driver cancelled the trip at the last moment. So, what was planned turned to unplanned one. The inner me didn’t want to give up, so we enquired about other cabs and drivers and finally found one in the afternoon. And as it is said ‘jo hota hai, ache k liye hota hai (everything happens for a reason)’ our driver Sameer was the best thing that could have happened to our Mechuka trip and the journey began.

Note: We booked a cab from Dibrugarh (Assam), which charged us INR 20,000 for 4 days.

Famous 20 Must Visit Destinations in Arunachal Pradesh

IMAGE2

We started our journey from Dibrugarh (Assam) on the 5th of October at around 1:00 P.M and reached Jonai (Assam-Arunachal Border) from where we had to obtain the ILP (Inner Line Permit) which is a must for everyone whoever wants to enter the state of Arunachal Pradesh. ILP can be obtained at all the check gates from where one can enter the state and also can be obtained online from the official website of Arunachal Pradesh . After the ILP was handed to us, we headed towards ‘ Aalo ’ for an overstay at the hotel. Once the check-in formality is done, we unwinded ourselves and enjoyed some traditionally cooked local food.

After having our morning tea at one of the tea stalls, we were back on the road for Mechuka. Travelling for a few hours, we enjoyed the breathtaking landscape, clicked pictures and took selfies. Soon we reached a place called Tato around 1:00pm and by then my stomach was growling and my eyes saw a stall, where hot Maggie and tea was being served. After having the hot bowl of Maggie, we spent some good time at Siko Dido waterfall which is located at a distance of aprrox 50 meters from the stall. Falling from great height, this majestic waterfall was truly mesmerising.

IMAGE3

Trust me, the above picture of the waterfall I have shared is not doing justice to what I saw. After witnessing these pretty midway falls, we again headed to our destination. The surroundings got prettier with each mile and we knew that we are closer to Mechuka. The moment we reached the entrance of this beautiful destination, we were blown by its ethereal greenery and hills covered with clouds. While we were busy sightseeing, we forgot that we had to arrange a new homestay because we started our journey late and due to the last-minute cancellation, the hotel rooms which we booked were also cancelled. Hence, we all got into the cab and our driver with all his past travel experience made us visit the nearby homestays and hotels in Mechuka. We enquired but unfortunately, they were almost full for the day. This made us bite our nails wondering what would happen next.

Sameer, our driver turned out to be our saviour here as he took us to yet another place to stay- the Yargepchu Homestay and luckily, we found a room. The homestay is situated at the bank of River Yargepchu and is owned and managed by a couple Lakma Sona and his wife. This was our home for the next three nights.

10 Best Souvenirs You Must Have from Northeast India

IMAGE4

How can someone miss to witness the sunrise when you are in the land of rising sun and staying at a place situated at the river bank was an added perquisite. So, we woke up early and got to witness an incredibly mesmerising sunrise and with this we started our day to discover the best of Mechuka. After getting ready with some heavy breakfast we headed to visit the tourist attractions of Mechuka.

Stop 1: The Hanuman Face

IMAGE5

Said to be centuries old, we witnessed the majestic Hanuman Face which is naturally etched in the mountain. The features of a monkey face is clearly visible and we were thrilled to identify each feature and parts of the Hanuman Face.

Stop 2: The Yarlung Camp

IMAGE6

Once done with witnessing the Hanuman Face, we headed to yet another point of interest, the Yarlung Camp which is situated at the height of 7394 feet from sea level. The gate of the camp is the last point where civilians are allowed without any special permission. Just about 20km from the gate is the Indo-China border where we were obviously not allowed but were lucky enough to meet our soldiers of the camp. They offered us tea but I was a bit hesitant and then my buddy said ‘army walo ki chai bade nasib se milti hai bhai, mana mat kar’ to which we all smiled and had some ‘Chai-pe-charcha’ with our heroes.

Note: Clicking pictures and shooting videos is restricted in the area, so I couldn’t provide any picture of the Yarlung Camp. The picture above was shot on our way to the Yarlung Camp.

Stop 3: The Gurdwara and Taposthan

IMAGE7

It is said, 400 years ago when Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was on his way to Tibet through Mechuka, he meditated on these two spots, one-is known as Gurdwara which is taken care of and managed by Indian army and the other is called Taposthan which has an interesting story. It is believed while Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his disciples were meditating, a wild bear attacked them. A boulder lifted to save Guru Nanak and today the impression of Guru Nanak’s face can be seen on the huge boulder.

IMAGE8

Going forward in the Taposthan, there is a beautiful waterfall where the Guru is believed to have taken a bath.

Stop 4: Dzogchen Samten Choeling Monastery (New Gompa)

IMAGE9

Situated not very far from Mechuka town, the new Gompa or the Dzogchen Samten Choeling Monastery is home to a 10 feet statue of Guru Lhuhe Rigzin making it yet another reason to visit Mechuka. Upon reaching atop the monastery, the view of the Mechuka town can be beautifully seen.

Stop 5: The Dorjeeling Village

IMAGE10

Crossing the Yargepchu River, the Dorjeeling Village is located approx 5 km from Mechuka town. This small scenic village with tiny little wooden houses and a small Monastery, is not actually a tourist spot but I would suggest you to make a visit where you can sit for a couple of hours and embrace the picturesque surrounding landscapes.

Stop 6: The Hanging Bridge

IMAGE11

This is a common sight all around the Mechuka. These wooden hanging bridges held by steel wires are used by locals to cross the river at different parts of the town for daily conveyance to their respective villages. We crossed one such bridge and saw horses all around the field. This very sight was incredible in itself.

Return to Homestay

IMAGE12

Our journey of 3rd day ended here and we headed back to our homestay. The mesmerising sights of Mechuka’s exploration occupied our hearts. After relaxing for a while, we went straight to the kitchen where Lakma was waiting for us and he introduced us to the Memba style kitchen. The chef in me couldn’t control and I wore the virtual hat and jumped into cooking in that folk style kitchen. Great food, good music, chilly night along with chilled beer summed up a great end of the day.

20 Top Reasons to Visit North East India

IMAGE13

This day was all about a lazy start since we covered most of the important locations in Mechuka. Since our friendship with Lakma grew strong last night we took his Fascino and explored the local places of Mechuka in the cold morning with a little drizzle. After enjoying the chilled morning ride, we came to our hotel and decide to brew a cup of morning tea.

IMAGE14

Without any further delay we got ready for the most awaited trekking expedition to Samten Yangchag Monastery also known as Old Gompa. Situated in 14kms away from Mechuka, the monastery is about 400 years old. One can only reach the spot only by trekking since driving cars on narrow and unconstructed roads are risky. The trek was quite long but my travel buddies and their jokes kept us moving. The best part about the trek was witnessing Mechuka with different angles as every step made us see the mesmerising bits of the town.

IMAGE15

The moment we reached the spot, the very famous adage ‘best view comes after the hardest climbs’ displayed right in front of my eyes amidst lush green landscape with clouds covering the hills and little drizzle. We reached there by 11:30AM and the caretaker of the monastery did his daily ritual of serving juice and snacks to the visitors without charging anything. This was much-needed after the trek. The view kept us engrossed and I was enjoying every bit of it along with having some intra personal communication. I realised how the hullabaloo of big cities and daily routine numbs a person’s soul.

After spending more than an hour and gaining all the positive vibes we trekked down and reached our source. We had half a day more which we spent by relaxing and strolling in the town and interacting with the locals. The people here are very friendly, they have a lot to enlighten tourists with their culture and tradition. After all these explorations, we went back to our homestay where Lakma welcomed us with chilled beer, good food and endless conversations.

With this our journey to Mechuka came to an end and went for a goodnight sleep. The next day we were all set to face the daily challenges but with utter positivity, because there’s always more to every good thing and there’s always more in the world yet to be explored.
