WHAT IS MAMMA MIA THE MUSICAL ABOUT?

From West End to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of staging the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs with a sunny, funny tale of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads unfolding on a Greek island idyll.

To date, it has been seen by over 65 million people in 50 productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China. MAMMA MIA the musical became the 8th longest running show in Broadway history where it played a record-breaking run for 14 years.

The movie version is said to have been the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008. A second film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, opened in July last year and is reportedly the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.

With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus,  Mamma Mia!  is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS ( Music & Lyrics ) 1945 Björn was born on 25 April in Gothenburg. When he was six years old, the family moved to the small town of Västervik, and this is where Björn grew up. In the mid-Fifties, Björn fell in love with rock’n’roll and skif e. By the early Sixties, he was a member of a folk group called the West Bay Singers. 1963 The group entered a talent contest arranged by Swedish radio. This led to discovery by songwriter and publisher Stig Anderson and his partner, Bengt Bernhag. Stig and Bengt had recently started a record company called Polar Music. The band acquired a new name, the Hootenanny Singers, and quickly became one of Sweden’s most popular groups of the Sixties. 1966 Björn had a chance meeting with Benny Andersson, himself a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. They hit it off and wrote their rst song together, ‘Isn’t It Easy to Say’. Björn recorded a couple of solo singles in the late Sixties, at which point he also started concentrating more on his collaboration with Benny Andersson. 1970 Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo and also staged a cabaret show together with their fiancées, Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. 1971 Björn and Agnetha married on 6 July. 1972-82 ABBA. 1982 Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with lyricist Tim Rice. 1984 A concept album for Chess was released in the autumn. 1986 The musical opened in London’s West End in May. 1988 Chess received its Broadway premiere. A reworked version of the musical opened in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2002. 1990 Björn and Benny decided to write a new musical. This time, they wanted to write exclusively in Swedish, and they chose the Emigrants novel series by author Vilhelm Moberg as the basis for their work. 1995 The resulting musical, Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla), opened in October. The show ran for three and a half years at various theatres in the Swedish cities of Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Björn and Benny’s most recent musical is Hjälp sökes (Help Wanted), a collaboration with playwright Kristina Lugn and Kristina director Lars Rudolfsson. Björn writes many of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra, and has involved himself in the stagings of MAMMA MIA! . 2008 MAMMA MIA! THE MOVIE was released. 2016 MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY opened in Stockholm in January, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018 MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN was released.

Sophie’s quest to discover the father she’s never known brings her mother face to face with three men from her distant romantic past on the eve of a wedding they and you will never forget. You’ll feel like you are on holiday in Greece with this charming show. The set will trasport you to the sunny island of Santorini in seconds.

The cast hit you with high energy, emotion and laughs througout! Donna Sheridan played wonderfully by Sara Poyzer at our performance ( Sarah Harlington alternate at some shows) captures your heart and truly shows the emotion she is going through superbly! Her stand out moment in our eyes is during “I don’t wanna talk” simply sensational and hits all the notes perfectly night after night well done! Sophie her daughter was played by Lucy May Barker who was perfect in every way, her charisma and joy shines out and is catching for sure, she has velvet tones and looks stunning. Tanya who is played spectacularly by Helen Anker will have you laughing from the moment she steps onto the stage. Rosie, played by Nicky Swift is equally as joyous and the duo are a perfect match.

Richard Standing (Sam Carmichael), Daniel Crowder (Harry Bright) & Phil Corbitt (Bill Austin) play the three dad’s to Sophie. The trio bring the story to light so well and bring comedy gold, some touching moments and again even more energy to an already buzzing show. Sky played by Toby Miles is also worth a mention, his charming smile and lucious looks make him one to please the eye throughout the show. Pepper who is perfectly played by James Wiloughby Moore gives an incredible dance off with Tanya in “Does your mother know” we for one were amazed by his talent!

This charming cast and wonderful band make this one of this year’s must see shows. Honestly you would be stupid not too, especially if it is showing in a theatre near you. Matinée Dog marked this show short of a 5th star due to a few technical glitches, mic’s not being up when required, music that at times drowned out the actors wonderful voices that we wish we could hear. However, this show still gets a very well deserved 4* and we are sure you will love it!

The audience went wild at the end of the show and you could tell the cast absolutely loved the crowd! A standing ovation happens a lot these days but this show and the stellar cast truly deserved this one. We then had an amazing time dancing to the mega-mix that incldes “Waterloo” & “Dancing Queen” before leaving with huge smiles on our faces.

Book your tickets now you will ABBA-SO-LUTELY LOVE IT! UK Tour and London tickets can be booked direct here .

Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical Returns for 2025 UK Tour

Following a successful UK, Ireland and International tour from 2021 – 2023 the Award-winning Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical, featuring Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf’s greatest hits, will return to tour the UK in 2025, with performances beginning on 6 January 2025 at Edinburgh Playhouse, running through to 20 September 2025 in Northampton.

Inspired by the spectacular arena tour of Australia and New Zealand, this reimagined show promises to be a thrilling experience, featuring a dynamic eight-piece rock band on stage and sprawling multi-level platforms that will transport you through the diverse worlds of Bat Out of Hell, from Raven’s bedroom to the depths of the Lost’s underground domains.

Returning to the cast are Glenn Adamson ( We Will Rock You, London Coliseum, Bat Boy in concert, London Palladium) as Strat, Katie Tonkinson ( Bonnie and Clyde , UK & Ireland Tour) as Raven and original leading cast members Rob Fowler ( MAMMA MIA!, UK & International tour, Tanz Der Vampire Das Musical , German tour) as Falco and Sharon Sexton ( MAMMA MIA!, UK & International tour, Billy Elliot The Musical ) as Sloane.

Bat Out Of Hell – The Musical wowed critics and public alike when it played limited seasons at Manchester Opera House, London Coliseum and London’s Dominion Theatre. The musical also had successful runs in Canada, Germany and New York, a residency in Las Vegas and the international tour took the show to the UK, Ireland, Germany, Australia and New Zealand. Bat Out of Hell – The Musical won the Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Awards and was nominated for 8 WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical.

Bat Out of Hell became one of the best-selling albums in history, selling over 68 million copies worldwide.  16 years after the release of the original album, Steinman scored again with Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell , which contained the massive hit I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) .
