Contagion sometimes found a home in the crowded third class sections of ocean liners, with new immigrants arriving on Ellis Island with measles, tuberculosis, influenza, and a variety of other ailments.  Others left their ports of departure with any number of health or medical conditions ranging from pregnancy to injuries to mental illness.

Anyone identified by the medical inspectors as unhealthy upon arrival would not be allowed to enter the country and would find themselves in the hospital complex.  Here they were cared for in what was, in its day, a state-of-the-art complex.

In a place full of hope for a better life, the hospital buildings were islands of both sorrow and redemption.

Ted Roth

A sense of both is evoked in the remarkable images pasted in the rooms and hallways, part of the current exhibit by French artist JR, titled Unframed—Ellis Island . The images draw visitors into a world that no longer exists. Rooms filled with quiet anticipation, the massive steel doors of the long silent autoclave, broken windows, half-open walls capture the stories of the Ellis Island Hospital, and the 1.2 million immigrants treated there.

“Fantastic tour - Our guide Barbara was really passionate and really good at sharing her knowledge - So amazing to discover all the JR art pieces along the visit as well - Thanks for this great experience!” ~ J. Dumas

1 year later, Akilah Davis' loc journey still inspires many on Crown Act Day: 'You embraced it'

Akilah Davis Image

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- As the movement to stop hair discrimination in the workplace known as National Crown Act Day continues, there are still many women who feel they can't show up as their authentic selves.

That was once true for ABC11 Race and Culture Reporter Akilah Davis . She declared hair freedom day on Juneteenth of last year after being emotionally exhausted covering up her hair, but one year later she continues to inspire others.

"For years, the beauty standard has been that the straight hair is beautiful," said Toria Council. "Seeing your story inspired me to keep going with my journey when I had self-doubt."

Council, 17, has been wearing locs for two years. It hasn't always been understood even by people who love her like her mother, Latonja Council.

"Her sister's hair was what people would call good hair. Her hair was what people would maybe call bad hair. It was thicker and harder to manage," she said.

Latonja admits that she's had a change of heart and now proudly embraces her crown.

"I've gone from the wig to the crochet to the afro to my own hair. I'm not going back," she said.

Kelia Chavis,41, loc'd her hair after seeing Akilah's hair story. She had concerns that it might be not be perceived as professional.

"When you're already the minority, you don't want to draw more attention to yourself," said Chavis.

Akilah Davis' story went viral and was picked up by national media outlets. She received hundreds of emails from people across the globe including Jazmane Brown, a military spouse living in Wiesbaden, Germany.

"People are just tired of living by what others say they are supposed to be. You went and knocked it out the park. You said I'm going to be me," said Brown referencing Davis. "I'm going to embrace that and girl, you embraced it."

Many others embraced it too. It brought a boost to Garner loctician, Maya Anderson's bottom line, who loc'd Akilah.

"I became booked with installations for microlocs for the rest of the year," she said.

There were questions around why the story resonated with so many people. Davis spoke with Duke University African American Studies professor Dr. Jasmine Cobb.

"Your made a choice. I think it was really important to remind women they can make a choice about how they show up," said Cobb. "There may consequences, but they can face those consequences."

According to Cobb, many minorities have felt they can't be themselves at work. They often change their look and code switch to fit in, but it comes with a cost.

"That does take a toll on people in terms on anxiety and depression," Cobb said. "Many African Americans understood that to succeed or be upwardly mobile meant to present oneself to the world and a different self to the community."

This is why Davis wanted to inspire women and girls to be comfortable in their own skin by wearing their crowns as they are.

National Crown Act Day is known as Black Hair Independence Day as 26 states have banned hair discrimination. North Carolina is not one of those states. Crown stands for "Create a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair."

It's a world Council hopes to one day become an adult in.

"This my hair. This is my authentic self," she said.

RI food news: Kids eat free, a vegan challenge, award-winning distiller has a new bourbon

liberty hair tours

A dining deal for kids, a new spirit from an award-winning distiller , a vegan food promotion and a new food and drink tour are in the news this week.

July 4 is generally a day for cookouts but who are we to ignore a dining offer for kids to eat free at Applebee's.

Bourbon is new on the menu at Sons of Liberty, the award-winning whiskey maker.

The entire month is devoted to trying new vegan dishes at 13 restaurants.

Even locals can act like tourists and enjoy a tasting tour with lots of info on the Prohibition era in Providence.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Kids eat free

On July 4, kids eat free at local Applebee’s locations owned and operated by  Flynn Group . The special is valid all day Thursday only with two free kids' meals offered with the purchase of each adult entree. Children 12 years and under must order from Applebee’s Kids’ Menu. Each selection on that menu is accompanied by a choice of a side dish, and juice, milk or chocolate milk.

Participating Applebee's in Rhode Island are in Coventry, Cranston, Middletown, Smithfield, South Kingstown, Warwick, Westerly and Woonsocket. In Massachusetts, restaurants in Fall River, North Attleboro, North Dartmouth, Seekonk and Raynham are participating.

The deal is for dine-in only and you must mention the offer when ordering. It excludes tax and gratuity. It cannot be combined with any other offer or discount.

New local bourbon

Bottled at 94 proof and finished with toasted oak, Sons of Liberty Bourbon Whiskey has arrived. The South Kingstown-based business has named it as the inaugural release to their Barrel Selection Series which is dedicated to handpicking whiskey barrels from other distilleries for the sole purpose of enhancing their flavor through finishing.

“For this bourbon, we have selected barrels, and will continue to select barrels, that match a flavor profile we are looking for,” explained Mike Reppucci, Sons of Liberty’s president and founder. “We then bring them in-house to finish them with a blend of toasted oak staves to complement and enhance the starting Bourbon.”

Sons of Liberty has been crafting a variety of whiskies, gins, vodkas and more since 2011, but this process is a first for them.

“This is a new adventure for us,” said Reppucci, “and we’re really fired up to use our knowledge and experience acquired over the years to be able to offer a great-tasting Bourbon at a great price.”

Described on the label as being bold, yet approachable, with notes of toasted vanilla and caramel, the 750ml bottles of Sons of Liberty Bourbon are now available in Rhode Island liquor stores with a suggested retail price of $39.99. The Bourbon is also available in Sons of Liberty’s tasting room in South Kingstown which is open Thursday-Sunday. Thursdays 5-9 p.m., Fridays 5-10 p.m., Saturday 1-10 p.m. and Sundays 1-7 p.m.

The product locator on Sons of Liberty’s website can be used to find local stores carrying the new Bourbon.

13 restaurants take on the Vegan challenge

The fourth Rhode Island Vegan Chef Challenge kicked off on July 1 with local chefs competing for your votes at 13 restaurants or takeout spots.

Chefs at Providence restaurants including Casa Azul Taqueria , Pianta , the Patio on Broadway , Strive Kitchen + Bar and Crepe Corner in Cranston, are participating. Each will offer creative and delicious plant-based menu options.

Also participating are Foglia and Basil and Bunny , both in Bristol, La Cuisiniere RI which has an order and pick-up service model on Bath Street in Providence, Lucia Italian Restaurant in Newport, Lucy Juicy RI in Cranston, Tasteful Juice and Food in East Greenwich, Crazy Burger in Narragansett and Harmony Cafe in Lincoln.

You have one month – from July 1 to July 31 to sample the plant-based dishes. Then vote on the Rhode Island Vegan Chef Challenge website .

New drink tour

The Providence Tour Company has a new Prohibition-themed beer and spirits tour in downtown Providence, available for booking this July. This tasting tour includes beer and spirits produced in Providence. The tour is about 1.2 miles long and stops at downtown bar and restaurant favorites including The Malted Barley, Plant City,Moonshine Alley and more.

“Providence was a bootlegger’s paradise of sorts during Prohibition and gives us lots of interesting stories to tell, including powerful crime lords, corrupt officials, and shootouts on the Narragansett Bay,” Company owner Bradly VanDerStad said.

Topics covered on the tour include the origins of Prohibition, popular liquor loopholes, stories of famous Rhode Island bootleggers, Prohibition enforcement and the cultural impact of Prohibition on the city of Providence.

Tours will be available regularly on Saturdays in July, with the goal of introducing Sunday availability soon afterward. Private tours are available upon request. Learn more at pvdtourco.com .

Discover the best guided tours of this iconic national monument, plus how to see it on your own.

The Best Statue of Liberty Tours

Key Takeaways

  • You can explore the Statue of Liberty on your own or take a guided tour.
  • Some tour operators include additional New York City attractions in their Statue of Liberty tours.
  • Round-trip ferry service to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty is typically included in tour rates.

The Statue of Liberty is America's most iconic and enduring symbol of freedom. A gift from the French, "The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" – its official name – was dedicated in 1886. It was often the first thing immigrants to the United States saw as they sailed to Ellis Island. The statue holds a torch in one hand and a tablet inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence in the other. She stands a little more than 300 feet tall and is made of copper, which has oxidized over time to create her signature green patina. To make the most of your visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site, consider these key tips.

Several independent tour companies offer tours to the Statue of Liberty that include private guides and extra perks like priority ferry boarding. Some also combine trips to the Statue of Liberty with visits to other attractions, such as the 9/11 Memorial . However, these companies are not official vendors of the national park service, meaning there may be unnecessary charges.

The company estimates that the entire experience will last about five hours, depending on how much time you spend exploring on your own.

Reviewers praise the tour guides, who they describe as knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Statue of Liberty Cruises

One of the best ways to view Lady Liberty is from the water. Consider one of these Statue of Liberty cruises for a unique vantage point.

How to Tour the Statue of Liberty On Your Own

statue of liberty torch seen from the bottom

Getting There: You'll need to take a ferry to reach Liberty Island. Statue City Cruises is the official ferry provider for the National Park Service, and the only ferry service authorized to provide transportation to and from Liberty Island. Before you board, you'll go through an airport-style security screening. The ferry departs from two locations: Battery Park in New York City and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Ferry operators recommend arriving about 30 minutes ahead of your reserved time.

You can reach Battery Park via public transportation, such as the subway or bus. The 4 and 5 trains stop at Bowling Green; the M5, M15 and M20 bus routes also stop within walking distance of the ferry. Driving is an option, but parking is limited. If you're planning to do more sightseeing, heed the advice of reviewers and sign up for a hop-on, hop-off bus tour , many of which stop at Battery Park.

For ferry departures from New Jersey's Liberty State Park, you can arrive via the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Plenty of parking is available, for a fee, if you choose to drive.

Tickets: Tickets, which cost $25 for adults and $16 for kids ages 4 to 12, cover round-trip ferry transportation and access to specific park attractions. To access both the pedestal and the crown, you need to reserve and purchase timed tickets before your trip. Tickets to the pedestal sell out quickly, and you'll likely need to book tickets to the crown at least three months in advance.

Experiences: Visitors can stop by the Information Center and explore the Statue of Liberty Museum The museum houses artifacts, including the original torch, as well as multimedia displays detailing the statue's history and creation. Meanwhile, the on-site Information Center offers brochures and tour schedules. Kids can join the Junior Ranger program at the center by picking up a booklet of activities to complete to earn a special badge. Any visitor is welcome to take a free Park Ranger guided tour of the statue's exterior, which explains how the statue was made, its symbolism and more, or use a self-guided audio tour.

The pedestal stands at about half the height of the monument and boasts panoramic views of New Jersey, New York City, the New York Harbor and Ellis Island. Brave-hearted visitors will want to take the narrow, double-helix steps to the statue's crown for a bird's-eye view of the city. There are 162 steps from the top of the pedestal to the top of the crown. There is no elevator and the park service discourages this trek for visitors who suffer from heart and respiratory conditions, claustrophobia, acrophobia and vertigo. Children must be at least 42 inches tall to safely climb the stairs.

What to Bring: You will need an ID to pick up your tickets from will call (if you choose to get your tickets there). If you plan to visit the crown, each ticket holder will need to show a valid ID along with the ticket that bears their name; minors without ID are exempt from this policy. Locker facilities to store personal items during your visit are available at the base of the statue; lockers accept quarters only.

No large bags (carry-on luggage, large suitcases, etc.) are allowed on Liberty Island. Backpacks, strollers, large umbrellas and food and drink are prohibited inside the statue.

Restrooms: Restrooms are available in the gift shop and in the statue's lobby.

Traveler Tips: Travelers love seeing the Statue of Liberty up close. Multiple tourists recommend a morning visit to make sure you have enough time to see everything, especially if you combine your trip to Lady Liberty with a visit to nearby Ellis Island. If you purchase a ferry ticket for 2 p.m. or later, you will not be able to go to both islands, but will have to pick either Liberty or Ellis Island. Reviewers recommend allotting at least half a day to see everything and suggest going in the morning to avoid crowds. They also stress booking tickets to the crown several months in advance to make sure you obtain tickets.

Her tour will begin in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 16 and continue with stops in Boston, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle.

Travis Kelce had a “blast” performing alongside Taylor Swift at her Eras Tour concert in London.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, gushed about his surprise skit during Wednesday’s episode of his “New Heights” podcast , sarcastically saying that it was “very unlike” him to “be a ham.”

He gushed, “I was up there with three professionals. You can do no wrong with Taylor on stage. [I kept telling myself], ‘Do not drop the baby. Hold onto the baby.'”

Kelce explained to his brother and co-host, Jason Kelce, how the cameo came about, admitting he was the one to “initially mention it” to his girlfriend.

“I was like, ‘How fun would it be if I just rolled out on one of the bikes during the “1989” era?'” he recalled. “She started laughing and was like ‘Would you seriously be up for doing something like that?’

“I was like, ‘What? I would love to do that. Are you kidding me? I’ve seen the show enough. Might as well put me to work here,'” Travis continued. “She found the perfect part of the show to put me in. … It was, like, the safest option.”

Travis shocked concertgoers in June when he popped out onstage during a transition for the “Tortured Poets Department” set.

The athlete, who wore a custom suit and top hat, carried Swift across the stage bridal-style before setting her down on a red bed — while repeatedly telling himself not to “f–k this up.”

Travis then jokingly fanned himself as the other dancers helped the pop star change out of her white gown and into a two-piece set , telling Jason he modeled his moves after Jim Carey in “Dumb and Dumber.”

While Swift stayed in character, Kelce, who said he felt “tiny” onstage, couldn’t contain his smile — which was captured in her subsequent loved-up Instagram post .

Before launching into “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” the 14-time Grammy winner subtly blew her beau a kiss.

Travis attended all three of Swift’s sold-out shows across the pond while Jason and his wife, Kylie Kelce, were in town for the first two , missing their family member’s big stage debut.

Travis and Swift fell hard and fast after they began dating last summer .

During an appearance on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast , released last Tuesday, the three-time Super Bowl champion revealed what made him fall in love with the “Cruel Summer” singer.

Travis told co-hosts Will Compton and Taylor Lewan that Swift didn’t want any special treatment the first time he invited her to one of his Chiefs games.

“She just walked right through the front door,” he recalled. “There was no talking to security, making sure that she gets to her [seat]. She’s just like, ‘I just wanna be around the family and friends and experience this with everybody.’

“She’s in the madness. She wants to be a part of it. She wants to support me and do things like that,” he said. “She really won me over.”

Despite her level of fame, Travis explained that Swift is “very self-aware” and grounded.

Travis Kelce on the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast

“She understands situations like that and I think that’s why I really started to fall for her, how genuine she is just around friends and family.”

When asked how he has navigated the heightened spotlight , Travis said he is “proud” to be with Swift and has accepted everything that comes with it.

“You want to keep things private, but at the same time, I’m not here to hide anything,” he said. “That’s my girl. That’s my lady. I’m proud of that.”

I feel bad, not getting our tour guide's name, but she was a young college student with very short hair and had the most charming personality and patience with our driver on his first day and he wouldn't get off his cell phone. I believe arguing with his wife. She was very informative, and yet very gracious with all the riders, and I look forward to coming back in the future and taking this tour again

Photo of Michele T.

The best tour I've taken in quite awhile. Max was a fabulous guide! She shared amazing information in an interesting and entertaining way! The time flew by and I was sad the tour ended. I would take Max as a guide anytime and can't recommend this tour enough! If you have a chance to take this tour, do yourself a favor and take it!

Photo of Josie B.

Do not recommend. The guide was mumbling stories without any pause to himself and combined with poor speaker system we could only here like 20% of what he was saying. He did not care if we were listening and was zero interactive. It was just painful and most young folks just tuned out. The driver did not acknowledge our presence with may be a hello. Definitely poor compared to fun and interactive tours they give you on duck tours in boston. We should get our money back.

Photo of Ellen C.

This was an informative bus/trolley tour, led by a guide dressed up in colonial clothing. It was very interesting to get a high level tour of all the important places in Lexington and Concord - it gives you a sense of which places you should go back to visit after the tour. It got a little confusing since we were winding around and I have no idea really where everything was location-wise, but was very cool to see where the first shot rang out, where the first blood was shed, where Louisa May Alcott wrote Little Women, where Paul Revere rode, etc. Adults are $28 but with AAA the price is $25. It's convenient being located right in the visitor center, and you can get free parking out back for the entire day if you wanted to visit the shops nearby. There is also free 2 hour parking on the street, and when I was there, they weren't really monitoring it (late August, after peak tourist season). For the convenience of being driven around, told stories to, and as an introduction to the tourist locations in the city, this was a good experience. I'd recommend it to others!

The tour is great but the company does not enforce the mask mandate making it unsafe to ride in a closed vehicle.

Photo of Tricia B.

We had a rather large group of students (10th grade) on the tour - too big to fit on the trolley, so the company was very accommodating and arranged for their guide to board our charter bus and give the tour from there. The sites were fantastic, and the guide gave a lot of great information (although the accounts of Paul Revere were contradicting with what we had been told on the Freedom Trail tour). Our tour guide was nice, but didn't seem very used to giving tours to teenagers. Her information was much too in-depth for 15 and 16 year olds in their first semester of U.S. History (she threw out A LOT of names without explaining who any of these people were). The girls are ESL, so that made it extra difficult for them to keep up. The guide got very frustrated whenever the girls became distracted and lectured them, but her tour was almost entirely lecture style, not at all interactive. We saw the Lexington battle green (where the first shot heard 'round the world was fired, got to go to the gift shop, drove to Concord as the guide pointed out sites along the way (including Little Women author, Louisa May Alcott), and ended the tour with the bridge in Concord where Colonial soldiers defeated the British forces that day. Having said that, the company was very good to work with. They made special arrangements for our group's size and our time frames, so it was good, but not the best tour of our trip.

Photo of Joe T.

Take the tour it's fun. The ladies do a great job during the tour. It's not very long and gives you a great perspective.
