I wanted to write and tell you what a terrific job you did with our trip. I’ve been traveling since 1980 and this was the easiest trip ever for me. I simply had to do nothing but teach! It’s hard to believe it’s taken me this long to get it right, slow learner! The students and parents have had nothing to say but wonderful things…

Nan Moore Male High School

You have been so wonderful with our parents and students throughout the entire course of this tour. I am so glad we signed on with Music Travel Consultants/Educational Destinations as you gave our group the red carpet treatment every step of the way.

Janis Stackhouse Bloomington High School North

Music Travel Consultants/Educational Destinations is top-notch. The professionalism of the staff and their attention to detail is a director’s dream come true. My students and I have traveled with them four times over the past several years and I can say that “I won’t leave home without them!

Jena Adrianson Lawrence Central High School

I can’t say enough good things about Educational Destinations. They had everything covered and it was a relaxing and fun trip. My students and parents commented that it was the best trip we have ever taken. I’m ready to plan another trip with this company.

Brenda Bergman Jay County School Corporation

I recently had the pleasure of going on a Disney Trip with our band from Eastern High School in Greentown, IN. I was skeptical about going but am so glad I did. My Grandson and I came in rather late and had no problems whatsoever in getting onto your site, paying for our trip, and having confirmation that we were good to go.

Dianna Workinger Greentown, IN

Being able to trust implicitly the people who are planning what we will see, the timing of the itinerary, and the traveling arrangements is comforting not only to our staff but also to our parents. For our parents to know that this is a company that we use year after year with great results gives them the peace of mind that their children will experience the safest trip possible.

Mrs. Kathy Schubel Principal, St. Bartholomew Catholic School

I wanted to thank you so much for such a great trip! Our kids had a wonderful time and I could not imagine how we would have seen all that we were able to see without having you organize this trip for us.

Angie Remington Madison-Grant Elementary Students

I have worked with Educational Destinations on a yearly basis since 2001 and ED is the best educational travel group our school has ever worked with. It is refreshing to know that during the course of a trip that if any questions or problems arise, we have the consultant, whom we have worked with all year, right there with us to answer all questions and take care of the tickets and timing. It makes the trip very relaxing and enjoyable and a trip our kids never forget.

Darrin Russell 8th Grade U.S. History, Mitchell High School

I have been coordinating educational field trips for my school for the past 10 years and could not be happier with Educational Destinations. From the very first brainstorming session to the moment we return home from our trip, Educational Destinations works tirelessly to make sure our trips are memorable and successful. They are always quick to answer my questions, which I truly appreciate. Michael, Robin, and Ryan have been fantastic to work with over the years and I highly recommend them!

Kris Samick Spencer-Owen Community School Corporation

Educational Destinations has taken the stress out of planning and traveling with a large group. As a teacher, I am now able to actually enjoy the time I have with my students instead of worrying about all of the necessary details. From the very first contact made to the last moment of the trip and beyond, each and every person we have interacted with from Educational Destinations has been professional, concerned about fulfilling our needs, and exceptionally conscientious.

11 Amazing Field Trips Every Hoosier Took As A Kid… And Should Retake Now

Written by

I know you remember the feeling of going to school on field trip day. You weren't tired and groaning, wishing you were still in bed; instead, you were slightly excited and skipping a little as you hopped onto the bus for field trip day. Field trips are one of the most exciting part of a kid's school year, and Indiana has some amazing field trip destinations.

In case you've forgotten, here are 11 amazing field trips you likely took as a kid that you'll want to revisit immediately.

1. Conner Prairie - Fishers

alt

Conner Prairie was a staple field trip destination for most kids in Indiana. Conner Prairie showed kids what life was like before most modern advances and includes places like Prairietown (set in the 1830s), the Civil War Journey, and the Balloon Voyage.

2. Holiday World - Santa Claus

alt

Every Hoosier kids got super excited when learning one of their field trips would be to the infamous Holiday World. With amazing characters, thrilling rides, an awesome water park, and free soda, Holiday World was the ultimate Indiana field trip destination.

3. Fort Wayne Zoo - Fort Wayne

alt

The Fort Wayne Zoo is a favorite field trip spot for many kids (though southern Hoosiers might have gone to the Mesker Park Zoo and central Hoosiers to the Indy Zoo). At zoos, get to partake in mini-classes, learn more about geography, science, and culture, and, of course, take in a wide array of animals. Rekindle your childlike wonder by returning to the Fort Wayne Zoo.

4. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis - Indianapolis

alt

This award winning, world renowned museum was the ideal stop for fun, learning, and inspiring creativity. Children could explore dinosaur exhibits and so much more. The exhibits have only gotten better with time, so take a trip down memory lane and swing by to rediscover your inner child.

5. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore - Chesterton

alt

While you might have only been lucky enough to visit this gorgeous state park and beach if you lived in northwestern Indiana, the kids who went always had a blast. If you've never been, you should definitely check it out.

6. Richmond Art Museum - Richmond

alt

Anyone in eastern Indiana can attest that this museum is highly underrated. Not only does the Richmond Art Museum have a wide variety of art galleries, but they also have a ton of interactive activities for kids, making this place a field trip favorite.

7. CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center - Terre Haute

alt

Sometimes, the best field trips are the ones that move you. When Hoosier students read The Diary of Anne Frank and were learning about the Holocaust in history class, a field trip to the CANDLES Holocaust Museum became the perfect companion. While certainly a field trip for older students, this experience is an extremely profound one.

8. New York Central Railroad Museum - Elkhart

alt

What kid isn't excited by trains? The New York Central Railroad Museum allowed children to explore trains through role playing games, a toy train layout exploration, and of course, time spent playing on real trains. Lucky students got to learn all about railroads and trains past on these fun-filled field trips.

9. WonderLab - Bloomington

alt

What better way was there to understand science than by visiting WonderLab Museum in Bloomington? This amazing hands-on museum let you find the fun in science through interactive learning and student experiments. While it's a relatively newer place (21 years old), I bet plenty of young Hoosiers were still lucky enough to score fields trips here.

10. Rotary Jail Museum - Crawfordsville

alt

This historical museum was once a working jail, and is one of three rotary jails in the US. What makes this jail special, however, is that it still turns. Students who went on this field trip were able to learn more about the role of jails in history, while taking in this building's unique construction and design. Plus, you never misbehaved on this field trip!

11. Clifty Falls State Park - Madison

alt

Those able to go on this awesome field trip likely lived in southern or eastern Indiana. Including awesome nature exhibits, a stunning waterfall, and informational hikes, this field trip was all about encouraging kids to get outdoors and explore.

Feeling nostalgic yet? Don't worry, you can still visit all of these incredible destinations. Which of these awesome field trips did you get to take in school? Were there any memorable field trips you took that were left off this list? Let us know!

Indiana Is Home To Jackson Washington State Forest, A Little-Known Slice Of Paradise

Nestled in the core of southern Indiana spanning both Jackson and Washington counties is 18,000 acres of amazingness just waiting to be explored from top to bottom. Known as the Jackson-Washington State Forest, this amazing respite from the hustle and bustle of city life is a spectacular example of the pure perfection that is Indiana's amazing outdoors. The Division of Forestry manages an impressive 15 state forests in Indiana encompassing more than 160,000 acres, and this one just so happens to be especially wondrous. Come out to one of the most beautiful places in Indiana and enjoy - there's so much to do that you could make a whole season out of it.

While Brown County often gets all the credit for being ridiculously beautiful, Washington and Jefferson Counties are a bit more secretive about it than that.

alt

But I do promise you this: no matter which forest in Indiana you visit, you'll be awed at the sheer wonder of it all. Jackson-Washington State Forest is no different.

There are 14 miles of wonderful trails to meander around on, with varying degrees of intensity and skill levels required for the full experience.

alt

Camping, too, is available, and there are numerous primitive campsites peppered throughout. Spend the night or spend 14 nights - no matter what, I'm pretty sure you'll never want to leave.

There are five gorgeous lakes you'll find here, too, and I definitely recommend visiting every last one.

alt

In Washington County, there's Spurgeon Hollow Lake, Potter Lake, and Plattsburg Pond; in Jackson County you'll find Knob Lake and Cypress Pond. All of 'em make for perfect day trips.

The hiking is great, the camping is awesome, and the memories you'll make along the way will be oh-so-special.

alt

This forest has so many different things to do - from the usual hiking and boating to more exotic things like archery and horse trails as well. It's an adventure through and through.

Oh, and the vistas - there's also the vistas!

alt

This awesome state forest is home to numerous notable overlooks that are sure to thrill. Indiana isn't exactly known for its mountain ranges, but that doesn't mean we don't have plenty of cool lookout points anyway!

Come out to the amazing Jackson-Washington State Forest any time - it's open year-round and every season brings with it new surprises.

alt

The Audubon Center In Indiana Where You’ll See More Than 12 Bird Species In A Single Afternoon

If there's any wildlife more commonly watched than birds, I'd love it if you told me which ones they are - because let's be real: birding is one of the easiest (and most oddly rewarding) hobbies one can get into, and you can do it from just about everywhere! Luckily for us avian geeks, there's an Audubon sanctuary in Indiana hidden in Fayette County that makes for the perfect birding destination. You'll see more than a dozen species of birds at (almost) any given time - different seasons bring different visitors, after all, and it's never a bad time. When it comes to birdwatching in Indiana , the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary is easily one of - if not THE - best little places of respite in the Hoosier State.

In 1943, a Hoosier by the name of Alice Green-Gray donated 264 acres to the Audubon Society in her daughter's name, as a way to honor her.

alt

In 1947, another gentleman by the name of Finley Gray donated even more land to the sanctuary. This, plus a few smaller donations over the years, has brought the grand total of acreage to more than 700 amazing acres!

From dawn until dusk, this breathtaking little paradise is home to countless species of birds.

alt

Many of them make the sanctuary home year-round; others are just visiting, passing though during annual migrations and calling the preserve home for just a short time.

It's also known as being the site of Indiana's most amazing annual hummingbird festival, which takes place at the end of summer - typically in August.

alt

The precious, tiny ruby-throated hummingbird is the guest of honor at that time; you'll learn everything there is to know about this special little critter, and you'll leave with a whole new appreciation for just how wonderful this world we live in and the creatures in it truly are. Other notable species include both cuckoo species, warblers, tanagers, and many more. How many can you spot?

In the fall, autumn color explodes to life - and in the spring and summer, wildflowers abound. Winter brings a stunning quiet - a perfect stillness sure to quiet the soul.

alt

I'm pretty sure it's impossible to NOT fall head over heels in love with this one. It's astonishing in so many ways - from the birdwatching to the landscape - and I have no doubts you'll find this place as calming to the spirit as I do.

Even if you're not a fan of birdwatching, that's okay - there are so many more reasons to love this incredible place, and I think you'll discover all of it right away.

alt

Indiana is an amazingly beautiful place; it's full of all kinds of surprises, from the kind folks who live here to the amazing flora and fauna that call it home as well.

So come on out to the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary - an absolutely amazing escape from all the pressures of real life.

alt

Then, just as it is today, Elkhart was and is a vital link between East and West during our country's growth. Visitors enter the Museum through a 1915 passenger coach. This area introduces a timeline to the local railroad history beginning in 1833 with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern RR, and tracing it through 1914, when the New York Central gained control of the LSMS. At the end of the coach, the path leads through the Central System Gift Shop and into the Museum's main gallery in an 100 year old freight house complex.

The museum faculty, a diverse group of community artists, provides an important bridge for the museum between the display of art and the production of art.

Imagine growing up in a log cabin, attending a one-room schoolhouse, bargaining at a trading post and moving across the wilderness in a Conestoga wagon. You can, when you visit Kidsfirst Children's Museum. Kidsfirst engages children's imaginations through hands-on environments and provides fun ways for young ones to discover history. Kids can pretend to be pioneers in the 1830s in the log cabin that's complete with a child-sized dining table, chair and bed, plus hands-on household items. Climbing aboard a Conestoga wagon, they can make-believe they're journeying cross-country to their new homestead. An 1838 map of South Bend, McGuffey Readers and hand-crafted furniture give an authentic feel to the 1830s one-room schoolhouse. Completing the pioneer village is a hands-on trading post.

One of the greatest feats of the American Revolution - The British flag would not be raised above Fort Sackville Feb. 25, 1779. At 10 a.m., the garrison surrendered to American Col. George Rogers Clark. His American army, aided by French residents of the Illinois country, had marched through freezing floodwaters to gain this victory. The fort's capture assured United States claims to the frontier, an area nearly as large as the original 13 states.

Homeschool Field Trips Around Indianapolis

Homeschool Field Trips Around Indianapolis-  One of the greatest things about Indianapolis are all the great museums and parks. This makes for a really fun place to do field trips as a homeschooling parent! I’ve been researching where we should go in coordination with our curriculum this year and found an overwhelmingly large amount of cool places. There’s literally a place for any subject you’re learning about. I broke it up by indoor and outdoor locations in case you’re doing a spur of the moment trip but this is only a small percentage of all that Indianapolis has to offer.

The beginning of our year will start out pretty slow because of my lack of sleep with a newborn. Having a baby late in July means we’ll be starting the year off slow which is why I’m researching like crazy awesome places to visit once we’re mobile and able to explore! I’ve been to all of these locations but have never visited through the eyes of a teacher. The numerous amount of hands-on information we will learn is exciting!

15 Homeschool Field Trips Around Indianapolis

Below I’ve given suggestions of locations but there are multiple locations within each category you could explore. The website will link to the educators page of each location.

Get Outdoors

Farms- Fair Oaks Farm-  Lots to do and see on this dairy farm. You can learn about animals and their birth and what they do on the farm. Check the website for elementary, middle school and high school quizzes that go along with what you’ll be learning. You can pack a lunch but there is also a large variety of food options in the cafe. Try the grilled cheese and buy a chocolate milk to go, you won’t regret it!

Orchards- Tuttle Orchard-  take a tour of the orchard (apox 2 hours) and learn about the history, economics and how weather affects apples! Home School Day is October 10, 2018. Sign up online starting August 1st.

Zoos- Indianapolis Zoo-  Zoos are the perfect place for specific animal studies but our zoo is so vast, there are so many great opportunities! You could learn about conservation of the animals (specifically in the dolphin show) or have chats with various animals (sea lions, macaws, lions, cheetahs to name a few). Moderate temperatures are best for visits as the animals are more playful. My favorite time to visit is when it’s raining because there are no crowds, you can observe as long as you want and if you bring a big striped umbrella or wear a yellow rain coat the animals get more playful!

Conner Prairie-  Conner Prairie is our very favorite Indy spot to explore. Take on a role in  Prairietown  by using our Adventure Guide and Achievement Cards, link history with hands-on science in our  Create.Connect  gallery, and experience Indiana’s brush with the Civil War at  1863 Civil War Journey . Also be sure to explore the  Conner House , and take a journey out to our newest exhibit,  Treetop Outpost . August 28 and September 12, 2018 $5.50 per student, $8.50 per chaperone, free for primary educator.

Eagle Creek Park- explore, hike, picnic, and learn! Visit both nature centers and explore the park grounds for educational experiences on your own, or sign up your group of students for one of our environmental education program offerings. The Fall 2018 programs will be held Friday November 2nd and Friday April 5th. Fort Harrison Park (and other State Parks )- Again, great location for nature lessons with lots of shade. Be sure to check out each park’s website for a list of fun classes/activities to go along with your visit and the link that shares coloring pages and rainy day activities . Spring Mill  State Park- take a trip back in time to the 1800s while exploring history and nature in this one location !

Indoor Locations

Indiana State Museum-  The ISM has a great program lined up for 2018. Check out their K-12  School Guide on page 19 to learn more about each program offered. Be sure to check the age range before signing up. Be sure to pack a lunch for this location as their cafe is on the pricier side.

The Children’s Museum-  I’m not sure what you wouldn’t be able to do a lesson on at TCM. My daughter attended their preschool program last year and she learned about such a wide range of topics. Check their site for their various programs as well as pricing for each class. They also offer day camps during break.

Libraries- Indianapolis Public Library (6-12), Hamilton East Public Library-  We’ve got libraries in every town so just choose one closest to you and check out their program offerings. Up on the north side, Noblesville and Fishers have locations very dedicated to their children’s programs. They’re constantly adding more classes/programs for all ages and are very interested in what we want to learn about. Oh it’s also a great place for books! at the HSE locations there are cubbies for learning as well as rooms with desks and outlets that you can grab on a first come first serve basis.

Museum of Miniature Houses-  this darling museum’s permanent collection comes from the more modern miniature world and includes children’s doll houses that are not to scale (and have been well-loved), as well as small scale reproductions of items (many are quite exquisite) that become the contents of dollhouses, room boxes, vignettes, or any setting that the ingenious miniaturist chooses to create, often with painstaking attention to detail. They also offer workshops on how to build your own small scale items (check the age limit).

Arts Council of Indianapolis-  The Arts Council is a great place to look for lessons on all arts. Music, art classes, culture and more are all around the city all throughout the year.

Eitlejorg-  The Eitlejorg is primarily a Native American museum but there are also several rotating exhibits featuring other topics. Jingle Rails is a fun exhibit in the winter showcasing a large model train scene that is very intricate. The website does not mention discounts for home schooling but the discount is $5 per person—students and accompanying adults. Children 4 and under are free. Again, bring your lunch to this field trip because there aren’t many places close by for food and their cafe is pricey.

Indy 500 Hall of Fame Museum (The track offers “School Days” two weeks before the Indy 500. Students and chaperones get into the track FREE; receive a FREE parking pass; and FREE access to the Hall of Fame Museum. Lunches can be purchased or you can bring your own lunch into the track. Up close and personal views of the drivers, pit lane, and more. Watch your favorite drivers practice for the upcoming race. Awesome experience and great field trip fun!)

Newfields (Indianapolis Museum of Art)- their are hands on art classes, guided tours and self tours available at Newfields. Tours must be scheduled three weeks prior to your visit. This is a great way to introduce your children to a ‘grown up’ space where we have to learn to be more quiet. Bring a sack lunch!

If you’re in the Indy area or coming to Indy for a trip to one of these fantastic places, I’d love to show you around and do a lesson with you this year. Just contact me at [email protected].

Clocking in at just under five hours from Indy, Put-in-Bay is a tropical getaway in the middle of Lake Erie just off the shore of northern Ohio. You’ll take a ferry to the island and find live music, nightlife, great shopping and food, as well as plenty of things to keep you busy! Rent a golf cart to tour the island in style! If the party atmosphere isn’t your style, take the ferry over to nearby Kelleys Island for a more peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

2. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

The Island in Pigeon Forge

Is there anything better than looking up and seeing the Smoky Mountains in the skyline while you play mini golf, ride an alpine coaster, or walk into a gigantic replica of the Titanic? Pigeon Forge is a family friendly destination with lots of fun attractions, entertainment, and one of the best theme parks in the country – Dollywood! Best of all – you’re a hop, skip, or a jump away from the nation’s most visited National Park. If you’ve never seen it in person – it’s a life changing experience. Nothing like it! And admission to the park is absolutely free. Pigeon Forge is also home to one of the neatest crime museums I’ve ever seen – Alcatraz East Crime Museum is definitely worth a visit!

Travel Time: 5h 50m / 391 miles

3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee City Hall at night

Milwaukee may be known worldwide for cheese and beer but there’s so much more!  You can keep busy for several days exploring places like the  Harley-Davidson Museum , the  Milwaukee Public Market , and watching the famous wings open on the  Milwaukee Art Museum .  If you love a good festival – Milwaukee has lots and lots of them including the world’s largest music festival each summer.  The city has an endless amount of great food for all tastes, and don’t forget the beautiful views of Lake Michigan.  Take the time to explore some of the historic downtown neighborhoods and don’t leave without buying a bag of fresh cheese curds for your road trip home.

Travel Time: 4h 9m / 279 miles

4. Dayton, Ohio

field trip ideas indianapolis

Dayton is best known as the place that gave birth to modern aviation. The Wright Brothers called Dayton home and the city is full of historic places that will give you a front row seat to the history of the “flying machine” which is how the first airplane was trademarked. One of the original Wright Brothers bicycle shops is still in tact, and you can see an original Wright Flyer at the Carillon Historical Park. Take a ride over to Huffman Prairie Field where the brothers tested out there invention or tour the mansion where they lived. Best of all – Dayton is home to the Museum of The United States Air Force – an unbelievable airplane museum that consists of four different hangars and impossible to see in a single day. See rare military aircraft and even go on board a retired Air Force One plane. And it’s free!

Travel Time: 2h 11m / 117 miles

5. Parke County, Indiana

field trip ideas indianapolis

Parke County, Indiana is best known as the “covered bridge capitol of the world”! Located less than than two hours from downtown Indy, you’ll find a great relaxing destination with some much needed peace and quiet. You can grab an old fashioned map (remember those?) at the local visitors center and then set out to find as many of the historic covered bridges as you can, making it a perfect romantic getaway. Consider booking a room or campsite at Turkey Run State Park, Indiana’s most popular state park, for your home base. They offer brand new, minimalist cabins as well. The park has plenty of great hiking trails for all skill levels.

You can check out my post on visiting Parke County for other tips and suggestions:  This is the Covered Bridge Capitol of the World

Travel Time: 1h 40m / 78 miles

6. Adventures On The Gorge – Lansing, West Virginia

field trip ideas indianapolis

The New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most impressive architectural feats in American history. One of the many daring activities offered through  Adventures On The Gorge  in Lansing, West Virginia is called “Bridge Walk”. You can literally walk along the catwalk beneath the third highest bridge in the U.S. It’s not for everyone, but an unforgettable experience for thrill seekers! During your stay at the adventure resort, you can zip line, climb trees, enjoy incredible sunsets, and of course – some of the best whitewater rafting in the world.

Travel Time: 5h 50m / 372 miles

7. St. Louis, Missouri

Soda Fountain at Union Station

The Gateway to the West is more than just the country’s tallest national monument. (630 feet high, in case you were wondering – and yes, you can take a tram all the way up to the top.) Saint Louis is home to Forest Park, which is bigger than New York’s Central Park, and full of free attractions like the Saint Louis Science Center, Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum and yes – the award winning Saint Louis Zoo, which is only one of two major zoos in the America with free admission. Enjoy a great meal on “The Hill” – the last still thriving Italian neighborhood in America and take your kids to City Museum – one of the most bizarre, yet incredible places in the midwest. Tour Budweiser, take a stroll at the Missouri Botanical Garden, or try some St. Louis style thin crust pizza or toasted ravioli! Yum!

Travel Time: 3h 35m / 243 miles

8. Springfield, Illinois

field trip ideas indianapolis

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

Travel Time: 3h 11m / 213 miles

9. Holland, Michigan

field trip ideas indianapolis

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

Bill’s Advice:  I eat a lot of pizza when I’m on the road and Holland has one of the best pizza places I’ve ever been to.  It’s called  Fricano’s Pizza  and sometimes, I have dreams about it.

Travel Time: 3h 40m / 235 miles

11. Owensboro, Kentucky

field trip ideas indianapolis

Just south of Evansville is the bluegrass music capitol of the world – Owensboro, Kentucky. If you like the idea of watching local bands in a barn, taste testing bourbon, eating good barbecue, or catching catfish – you’ll love this place. Owensboro is also home to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and music legend Bill Monroe. You can even tour his childhood home .

Travel Time: 3h 10m / 197 miles

12. Cincinnati, Ohio

field trip ideas indianapolis

There’s a lot to see and do in Cincinnati! One of my favorite museums – The American Sign Museum is alone worth the road trip. Downtown you’ll find some fun places to eat, catch a game at Great American Ballpark, or take a stroll along the Ohio river on the beautiful hiking and biking trails. If you take a short drive (or walk) across the bridge downtown you’ll wind up in Covinginton, Kentucky. This historic town that was once notorious for gangsters is now a lovely area with dining and shopping, plus great views looking back at the Cincinnati skyline. Speaking of “skyline” – Cincy’s famous chili is available all over town. (I’m not personally a fan – but a lot of people like it!)

Travel Time: 1h 42m / 112 miles

13. Madison, Wisconsin

field trip ideas indianapolis

The state capital of Wisconsin is constantly ranked as one of the best places to live in the U.S.  Madison is also a fun college town with lots of things to do – though its best to visit in the spring and summer months if you hate cold weather.  My favorite thing to do in Madison is the Dane County Farmer’s Market that wraps around the entire Capitol building. Patrons all walk in one direction to shop for fresh produce and local goods.  Of course, State Street is full of action – all seven blocks between downtown and the University of Wisconsin campus. You can find food (140 restaurants!) unique stores, and plenty of entertainment day or night.

Bill’s Advice:  Tour the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol, and enjoy some time relaxing near the water.  (You can ice skate in the winter months)  For a quirky stop – a short drive to Middleton will get you to the  National Mustard Museum !

Travel Time: 4h 51m / 330 miles

14. Nashville, Tennessee

field trip ideas indianapolis

Music City USA has seen a major boom in recent years. Along with the treasures that have always made Nashville great, there are brand new attractions and businesses making it one of the hottest cities in the south.  For country music fans – the Hall of Fame is a great bet, along with a tour of the  Ryman Auditorium  and  Grand Ole Opry.   These days, Broadway is a happening street akin to Times Square in New York City.  Bars, live music, and plenty of good people watching.  Check out an exact replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, and be sure to try some authentic Nashville Hot Chicken while you’re in town!

Bill’s Advice:  Nashville is great for a weekend but definitely plenty to do for an extended visit or vacation.  It’s also one of the most popular cities on the list – which means it’s going to be busy.  Brace yourself for crazy traffic, higher than average prices to park your car downtown, and lots of people.  To save a bit of money, consider staying in one of the many communities that surround Nashville or out near the airport.  If you’re a country music fan – the George Jones Museum is a must! If not, you can still check out the rooftop bar on the fourth floor with great views of the river.

Travel Time: 4h 10m / 288 miles

15. Door County, Wisconsin

Al Johnson's Door County

One of the prettiest destinations in all of the midwest is Door County, Wisconsin. With its welcoming small communities, abundance of outdoor adventure, and of course – cherries galore – it makes for a perfect road trip. Be sure to check out the goats walking atop the roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay, take a sunset cruise from Fish Creek to capture some beautiful photos, and of course if your timing is right – pick some fresh cherries in one of the many orchards in the area.

Bill’s Advice: Be sure to pop into the Wisconsin Visitors Center and pick up a cheese map! You’ll find every location for fresh cheese and cheese curds all of the state. It’s fantastic!

16. Louisville, Kentucky

field trip ideas indianapolis

Of course most people know Louisville as the place where the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats are made, but that’s just the start!  Downtown Louisville offers a wide variety of attractions from the Muhammad Ali Center to Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby takes place.  For an adventure – try out the world’s only underground zip line at Louisville Mega Cavern or a cruise on the historic Belle of Louisville.  Lots of great restaurants for all tastes and cool places to stay including 21c and The Galt House Hotel.

Bill’s Advice:  Louisville is a great weekend trip!  If you love Kentucky Fried Chicken, pay your respects to Col. Sanders himself.  His grave site is a short drive from downtown.  Just follow the yellow line at Cave Hill Cemetery and you’ll find it.  Don’t be surprised if you see a bucket of chicken sitting on the tombstone.  No, seriously.

Travel Time: 1h 43m / 113 miles

17. Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

field trip ideas indianapolis

Talk about getting your bang for the buck – how often do you get four destinations packed into a single stop?  The Quad Cities is made up of five towns that share the Illinois-Iowa border.  (Yes, “quad” makes no sense as there are five and not four – but believe me, they know.)  It’s best known as the world headquarters for John Deere, and visitors can tour multiple historical spots that tell the story of the famous company.  Take a quick side trip up to LeClaire on the Iowa side to see where the show American Pickers began.

Bill’s Advice:  Try some Whitey’s Ice Cream while you’re in the region because it’s amazing!  It is seriously so good that it’s the first thing I want to do when I pass through the region.  I’ve interviewed the family that owns it – and they’re very nice!

Travel Time: 4h 30m / 306 miles

18. Fort Wayne, Indiana

field trip ideas indianapolis

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

Travel Time: 1h 57m / 126 miles

19. Indiana Dunes National Park

field trip ideas indianapolis

So let’s be honest, Indiana isn’t exactly a great place to live if you crave frequent road trips to the ocean. Florida? California? Better save some money for gas. However, it’s an easy trip to some of the beaches along beautiful Lake Michigan. Often underrated are the northern beaches of the midwest which are often less crowded, cleaner, and have sunsets that are just as beautiful. You can check out:  Indiana Dunes  for info on places to stay and things to do in the region. You can sit back and relax, rent a paddle board or kayak and watch your kids burn off energy running up and down the impressive sand dunes.

Travel Time: 2h 16m / 153 miles

20. Columbus, Ohio

field trip ideas indianapolis

Columbus, known to locals as “C-Bus” is the capitol city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

Travel Time: 2h 36m / 176 miles
