More information about egypt.

Egypt  is famed for its ancient civilization; the name alone evokes images of  pharaohs  and giant  pyramids.  A transcontinental country, linking  North Africa  to the  Middle East ,  Egypt  is bordered by  Libya, Suda, Israel , and the  Gaza Strip  and has coastlines on the abundant  Red Sea  and the  Mediterranean.  Its capital is  Cairo , where visitors can experience the splendor and mystery of the  Great Pyramids,  perhaps  Egypt’s  most iconic sight. Other important cities include the port city of  Alexandria,  located on the northern coast, and  Aswan , a city on the  River Nile , known for its archaeological sites such as the  Philae temple complex.  From the dusty, dry lands of the  Sahara Desert  to the sunny shores of the  Red Sea,  world-renowned for its coral reefs,  Egypt  is a country of contrasts. The national language is  Arabic , spoken by the majority of the  95 million  inhabitants. Much of the population is concentrated in cities, towns and rural communities along the fertile  Nile Valley  and  Nile Delta,  the only arable land in the country. On a  holiday to Egypt  you can expect to be greeted by warm hospitality; locals will often invite visitors to share strong  Arabic  coffee with them.

History of Egypt

Undoubtedly,  Egypt  boasts one of the longest histories in the world, spanning back to at least the  4th millennium BC.  Sometimes cited as the ‘ Cradle of Civilisation’,  the country appeals to travelers for its ancient monuments, which are most abundant around the fertile  Nile Valley , and include treasures such as the  Giza Necropolis , the  Valley of the Kings  and the iconic  Great Sphinx .  Ancient Egypt , the famous epoch in history, still immortalized today in literature and film, is heralded for its amazing progression in language, writing, architecture, organized religion, agriculture and government, with the earliest known  hieroglyphics  estimated to date to around  3200 BC,  and the first pyramid structures thought to have been built in around  2700 BC.  The first unified  Ancient Egyptian  kingdom began in  3150 BC  and reigning dynasties continued for almost  3000 years , with different kingdoms and intermediate periods within this time frame. The most well-known  pharaohs,  such as  Tutankhamun  and  Ramesses II  were present in the period of the  New Kingdom , between  1550  and  1070 BC.  During this unique time in the country’s history,  Egyptian  culture, religion, and traditions flourished. Concepts and practices, such as the  after-life ,  mummification  and  cosmic order  were popular at the time and still ignite the imaginations of historians and everyday people in the present day. Fast-forward to today and  Egypt  is a predominantly  Muslim  country, although it was an early center of  Christianity , before the  7th century.  Despite a turbulent history of occupation, the nation declared independence from the  British Empire  in  1922,  although the influence of the empire remained until the revolution of  1952.  For travelers wishing to experience one of the world’s oldest civilizations, a  package holiday to Egypt  allows visitors to walk in the footsteps of the  pharaohs  and immerse themselves in the splendor of times gone by .

Nature in Egypt

More than  90%  of  Egypt’s  land consists of desert areas, with an extremely arid climate and a near-impossible challenge of growing crops or sustaining life outside of the  Nile Valley  or in the rare oases such as the  Siwa Oasis  and the tropical paradise of the  Dakhla Oasis  in the  Western Desert.  The other-worldly sand dunes of  Egypt’s  deserts once acted as protection to the kingdom of the  Pharaohs  from the threat of western invaders. The urban centers of  Cairo ,  Alexandria , and  Aswan  contrast with the idyllic  Red Sea  resorts of  Hurghada  and  Sharm el Sheik , popular with holidaymakers for their up-scale hotels and scuba-diving opportunities. In fact, the  coral reefs  of the  Red Sea  are some of the most biodiverse in the world, and the exceptionally clear waters are perfect for admiring the marine life which inhabits the reefs such as  Clownfish ,  Pufferfish, Butterflyfish , the impressive  Lionfish  and the colorful  Emperor Angelfish.  Perhaps the most famous natural attraction in the country is the mighty  River Nile , the longest river in the world, which spans the country from  north  to  south . The yearly floods of the river, which historically fertilised the  Nile Valley  and nourished precious crops, has been halted since the completion of the  Aswan Dam  in  1970,  changing the agricultural practices in the area ever since. Today,  Nile river cruises  are an extremely popular choice for visitors wanting to experience the changing landscapes of the  Nile Valley  and the historical monuments and sights along the route. In contrast, the backdrop of the snow-covered  Sinai  mountains in the peninsula of the same name provides a unique sight in an otherwise warm, sunny and dry climate.

Sights in Egypt

Egypt  is a sightseers paradise, with a multitude of exciting sights to discover. At the top of most lists is the  Giza Pyramid Complex,  on the outskirts of the capital of  Cairo.  Here, visitors can explore the three great pyramids, the site of the workers' town, where the builders and engineers of the pyramids lived, and the famous  Great Sphinx.  This complex is considered the oldest Ancient Wonder in the world, and, amazingly, the only one of the wonders still in existence today. Through sheer workmanship and labor, these great pyramids were constructed to house the remains of the famous  Pharaohs  and to store the items that were considered necessary for the deceased to successfully survive in the  after-life.  Located close to the  Sudanese  border, the temples of  Abu Simbel  are another of the remnants of  Ancient Egypt  considered to be an unmissable sight on a  trip to Egypt.  Constructed by  Ramesses II , the temples are carved into the rock face and feature statues of gigantic human figures and intricate hieroglyphic carvings. Finally, the  Valley of the Kings  stands out as a must-see destination for the significant role its excavation has played in the understanding of the ancient  Egyptian  civilization. It was the main burial place of the most famous royal figures of the  New Kingdom,  and since its discovery at the end of the  18th century,  and the subsequent discovery of the tomb of  Tutankhamun  on the site ,  it has been shrouded in much mystery and intrigue. A  tour of Egypt  is the perfect way to immerse yourself in the country’s fascinating history and heritage and to experience the sheer scale and majesty of a number of the world’s most famous archaeological sights.

Egyptian Culture

Back in the era of the  Pharaohs ,  Egypt  led the way in the arts, creating the first synthetic color pigment, ‘ Egyptian Blue ’, and inventing various unique design codes and practices. Today, the country is one of the Arabic  cultural  trendsetters,  and a leader in the cinema industry throughout the  Middle East. Egypt  also has a rich musical tradition, with influences from both the  Mediterranean  and  Africa , and is famously the birthplace of  belly dancing , the characteristic dance of the region. In literary fields,  Egypt  has stood out for producing the first  Arabic  language writer to win the  Nobel Prize in Literature , the author  Naguib Mahfouz,  who was awarded the prize in  1988  for his numerous works, many of which are set in  Egypt . Of course, with such an impressive history, the culture of the country has strong links to the past and these elements are proudly showcased in its grandiose cultural institutions, such as the colossal  Egyptian Museum  in  Cairo.

If you dream of immersing yourself in the worlds oldest civilisation, walking in the footsteps of the the greats, such as  Tutankhamun  and  Ramesses II,  and exploring a country rich in natural beauty, from the  Red Sea  to the  Sahara Desert , a  holiday to Egypt  is an unforgettable experience, and the perfect choice for lovers of history, nature and culture.

Do I have to pay for the guides during my all-inclusive Egypt vacation package?

Our vacation packages include all our employees working during our luxury Egypt tours. However, it is good for tourists to leave small tips on all-inclusive tours to Egypt for coach drivers, local guides, tour leaders or poorer Egyptian workers (workers in ancient Egyptian temples or tombs), especially when they are met with great care and commitment during their trip to Egypt. Tips are under no circumstances compulsory. However, it is worth knowing that the custom of sharing and helping one another is commonly present and respected in Egypt, especially when giving service to a high standard.

What about the entrance to the different monuments?

Our all-inclusive Egypt vacation packages include all entrance tickets to museums, historic sites and monuments listed in our all-inclusive Egypt vacation packages. If a site is worth seeing that isn't included in the Egypt tour itinerary, we will inform you about it. However, only a few sites would be an additional charge.

One such site that you can visit for an additional fee on all our luxury tours is the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, found in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor. Our package holiday to Egypt all-inclusive includes the entrance ticket to the Valley of the Kings with three royal tombs, but unfortunately this famous tomb is not included. For a small fee, you can enter this tomb, explore its interior with beautiful murals, and see the mummy of the pharaoh.

All-Inclusive Alexandria, Egypt Tour Alexandria is a city that's famous for the term "Pearl of the Mediterranean," and it has a fascinating blend of history and the modern day. While little is left of the old town, Alexandria still retains its Mediterranean elegance with its old houses and cafes that are elegant in a European way and its Greco-Roman monuments. The Catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa, the underwater sea ruins, Montazah Palace and Gardens, and a vibrant art scene make Alexandria a unique place that must be seen. All-Inclusive Aswan, Egypt Tour Aswan, located in the south of Egypt and a highlight of any Aswan city tour , is about 900 km from Cairo. It is situated in the tranquil Nile Valley, where the river flows more fluidly than anywhere else in Egypt, washing over granite rocks and round emerald green islands dotted with palm trees and other tropical vegetation. The city is considered a favorite winter destination. No wonder - in summer the temperature here exceeds 104 °F (40 °C) daily! Featured on all our luxury Egypt tours.

All-Inclusive Cairo, Egypt Tour Most tourists don't really have time to look around the city as they just visit quickly for the day. It's a pity, because if we spend time visiting the city, we will discover an amazing metropolis away from the traffic jams and heavy air. The city of Cairo and its surroundings are home to the most valuable monuments of Egypt from the pharaonic period and Coptic and Islamic landmarks. You never know when you will encounter another remarkable trace of the past while walking around the city. Featured on all our luxury Egypt tours.

All-Inclusive Luxor, Egypt Tour Once the capital of Ancient Egypt, Luxor is known today as "the world's largest ancient open-air museum" due to its amazing temples and monuments. The Nile divides Luxor into two parts, called the East and West Bank. The Luxor Temple is a monument that must be noticed on any trip to Egypt. It is a testimony to the history of Egypt from the reign of the 12th dynasty in ancient Egypt to the 14th century AD when a mosque was built within the temple complex to commemorate Abuy Al-Haggag, responsible for introducing Islam to Luxor. Things to know about egypt vacations, does egypt have all inclusive.

Yes, Egypt does have all-inclusive resorts. The country is known for its magnificent tourist destinations, and many of its resorts offer all-inclusive packages to cater to the diverse needs of travelers. These all-inclusive resorts are popular among both international tourists and locals seeking a hassle-free and comprehensive vacation experience.

All-inclusive resorts in Egypt typically provide a range of amenities and services, including luxurious accommodations, meals, snacks, beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), access to recreational facilities such as pools and gyms, entertainment options, and sometimes even guided tours to nearby attractions. This convenient package lets visitors enjoy their stay without worrying about individual expenses and planning every detail.

With their stunning locations along the Red Sea coast, such as Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada, or historical sites like Luxor and Cairo, all-inclusive resorts in Egypt offer a blend of relaxation and exploration, making them an attractive choice for travelers seeking a balanced and memorable vacation.

What is the total cost to visit Egypt?

The total cost to visit Egypt can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the duration of your stay, the level of accommodation and luxury you prefer, the activities you wish to engage in, and your mode of travel. To provide a general idea, I’ll break down the major expense categories:

  • Flights: The cost of flights to Egypt will largely depend on your departure location and the time of booking. Prices fluctuate, so booking in advance or during travel deals can save you money.
  • Accommodation: Egypt offers many options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels and resorts. Prices will differ based on location and the level of comfort you desire.
  • Food and Dining: Food in Egypt is generally affordable, especially if you try local eateries and street food. High-end restaurants and dining in tourist areas might be more expensive.
  • Sightseeing and Activities: Entrance fees to historical sites, museums, and excursions to popular attractions will add to your expenses. Consider creating an itinerary in advance and budgeting for these activities.
  • Transportation: Within cities, transportation costs can be relatively low. Taxis, buses, and ride-sharing services are common. Longer trips between cities might involve more significant expenses.
  • Miscellaneous: Budget for additional expenses like souvenirs, tips, and travel insurance.

As an estimate, a mid-range budget traveler could plan to spend anywhere between $50 to $150 per day in Egypt. For a more luxurious experience, the cost can go higher. However, it’s essential to research and plan according to your preferences and financial capabilities.

How many days is ideal for an Egypt trip?

Egypt is an exciting place with a lot to learn about its history, culture, and natural beauty. But with so many things to see and do, how long is the best trip to Egypt? The answer depends on what you want to do, how much money you have, and how you like to travel. Let’s look at the different things that can change how long your trip to Egypt should be.

If you’re interested in Egypt’s ancient history, you should give yourself plenty of time to visit the country’s museums and historical sites. Cairo is home to many famous places, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, and the Citadel of Salah El Din. Luxor in southern Egypt is also a must-see for history fans with its marvelous temples and tombs.

Second, if you’re interested in natural beauty, add time for things like diving in the Red Sea or visiting the Western Desert. These places are a beautiful contrast to Egypt’s old buildings and should not be missed.

Third, consider taking a shorter trip if you are on a tight budget. Egypt is a relatively inexpensive place to visit, but the cost of a more extended trip can add up quickly. Even if a trip is shorter, it can still be a great way to see the best of the country without breaking the bank.

So, how long should a trip to Egypt last? We suggest spending at least 7–10 days in Egypt to see the main sights, and it will allow you to visit Cairo, Luxor, and maybe even Aswan or Alexandria.

If you have more time and want to see places that aren’t as well-known or spend more time on each site, we suggest a 14–21-day trip. It will allow you to learn more about Egypt’s past and culture and better understand what makes this country unique.

In conclusion, the best time for your trip to Egypt depends on what you want to do, how much money you have, and how you like to travel. Egypt is a great place to visit, whether you have a week or a month. It offers much, from old history to beautiful natural scenery and modern culture. So start planning your trip to Egypt immediately, and prepare for an adventure you’ll never forget.

Is Egypt a safe destination to Visit?

Egypt is generally considered a safe destination for tourists to visit. The country relies heavily on tourism, and the government has taken extensive measures to ensure the safety of tourists. There are police checkpoints throughout the country, particularly in tourist areas, and security measures are in place at airports, hotels, and major tourist sites.

As with any travel destination, it’s always wise to exercise caution and take commonsense safety precautions. It is advised to avoid large crowds, especially during demonstrations or protests, and always to remain alert and aware of your surroundings. It is also recommended that you follow the advice of your tour guide or travel operator and check with your embassy or consulate for any travel tips before your trip.

Overall, as long as you take the necessary precautions, Egypt is a safe and welcoming destination that offers a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty for visitors to explore and enjoy.

What is the best time to visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, during the country’s mild winter. The temperatures are pleasant during the day, ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit (about 18-30 degrees Celsius), and more relaxed at night. This is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Visiting Egypt from May to September can be a good option if you prefer to avoid crowds and endure hotter temperatures. Temperatures during this time can reach up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) or higher, but this is also the low season so you may find better deals on tours and accommodations.

It’s also important to note that Ramadan, the month-long Islamic holiday of fasting and prayer, can affect travel to Egypt. During Ramadan, many businesses and tourist sites have reduced hours or may be closed altogether. The dates of Ramadan change each year based on the Islamic calendar, so it’s essential to check the dates before planning your trip.

In summary, the best time to visit Egypt is during the winter season, between October and April, but if you don’t mind the heat and want to avoid the crowds, visiting during the summer months can also be a good option.

Tipping or Baksheesh in Egypt

Tipping, or baksheesh, is a common practice in Egypt and is considered a way to show appreciation for good service. It’s important to note that while tipping is not mandatory, it is expected in many situations, and it’s a good idea to carry small bills and change for this purpose.

Here are some standard tipping practices in Egypt:

  • Tour guides: Tipping your tour guide at the end of your tour is customary. The amount will depend on the length of the tour and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 10-20% of the total cost of the tour.
  • Hotel staff: Tipping hotel staff, such as bellhops and housekeeping, is familiar. A small tip of 10-20 Egyptian pounds per day is appropriate.
  • Drivers: If you hire a driver, it’s customary to tip them at the end of your trip. The amount will depend on the length of the journey and the level of service provided, but a good rule of thumb is around 50-100 Egyptian pounds per day.
  • Restaurants: It’s common to leave a tip of around 10-15% of the total bill at restaurants. Some restaurants may include a service charge on the bill, so check before tipping.

In summary, tipping or baksheesh is a common practice in Egypt, and it’s important to have small bills and changes on hand. The amount to tip will depend on the service provided. Still, as a general rule, a tip of 10-20% of the total cost is appropriate for tours and restaurants, while smaller tips of 10-20 Egyptian pounds per day are appropriate for hotel staff and drivers.

What to bring with you on a trip to Egypt?

When planning a trip to Egypt, it’s important to pack the right items to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some things to consider bringing with you:

Sunscreen: Egypt is a desert country, and the sun can be intense, so it’s important to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.

Comfortable walking shoes: Many of Egypt’s top attractions involve a lot of walking, so make sure you bring comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain.

Lightweight clothing: Egypt can be hot, so pack light clothing from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Packing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees is also a good idea, particularly if you plan to visit religious sites.

Scarf or shawl: Women visiting Egypt may want to bring a scarf or shawl to cover their heads when entering mosques or other religious sites.

Water bottle: Staying hydrated is important in Egypt’s hot climate, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the day.

Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be a problem in some regions of Egypt, particularly during the summer, so pack insect repellent to keep them at bay.

Camera: Egypt is a country full of fantastic photo opportunities, so bring a camera to capture all the incredible sights.

Power adapter: Egypt uses European-style power sockets, so if you’re coming from outside Europe, you’ll need to bring a power adapter to charge your electronic devices.

Packaging these essential items will prepare you for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Egypt.

Advices for women while traveling to Egypt

Traveling as a woman in Egypt can be a rewarding and exciting experience, but it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your safety and comfort. Here are some tips for women traveling to Egypt:

Dress conservatively: Egypt is a Muslim country, and it’s important to respect local customs and dress conservatively. It’s a good idea to cover your shoulders and knees when in public places, especially when visiting mosques or other religious sites.

Avoid walking alone at night: It’s best to avoid walking alone at night, especially in quiet or poorly-lit areas. Instead, take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app to get around.

Use a guide or tour group: Using a guide or tour group can be a good idea, especially if you’re traveling alone. This can help you navigate local customs and culture, and can provide an extra layer of safety.

Be cautious with alcohol: Drinking alcohol in public is prohibited in Egypt, and it’s important to be cautious with alcohol consumption. Stick to drinking in licensed bars and restaurants, and avoid getting drunk in public.

Be aware of your surroundings: It’s always important to be aware of your surroundings, especially when traveling in a new place. Be cautious of pickpockets, scams, and other potential dangers, and trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Research local customs and culture: Researching local customs and culture can help you better understand the country and avoid inadvertently offending locals. For example, it’s important to remove your shoes when entering a mosque, and to avoid physical contact with people of the opposite sex in public.

By following these tips and being aware of local customs and culture, women can have a safe and enjoyable experience traveling in Egypt.

Everything you need to know about egypt all-inclusive vacation packages.

What is an all-inclusive resort?

Egypt all-inclusive resorts provide you more for your money and reduce your planning stress. While their exact offerings will vary, you can usually expect meals and drinks to be included with your room rate, often with unlimited options. That’s what we call a relaxing vacation!

Many resorts also include activities, plus evening entertainment options such as live shows or theme parties. Tips and gratuities are usually included too (though still welcome).

Does all-inclusive include alcohol?

Most all-inclusive resorts in Egypt will include alcohol in their all-inclusive rates. However, they may charge extra for things like premium or imported spirits. Always check the details of your resort before booking, as there are some that do not include alcoholic beverages.

Does “all-inclusive” include flights to Egypt?

All-inclusive resort rates typically do not include flights. Your room rate includes only what you need once you’ve landed, like food, drinks, and entertainment. That’s where Travelocity’s all-inclusive packages come in. You can bundle your all-inclusive accommodation and your flight to Egypt to get you the best rate—and peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of.

Are all-inclusive trips to Egypt worth it?

All-inclusive vacations to Egypt are well worth the up-front cost. Once you’ve booked your Egypt resort, you don’t have to think about the word “budget” again. Everything you need is nearby, from delicious restaurants to daily activities, and night-time entertainment. There’s no limit to your fun, and you never have to watch your spending, because it’s all included.

Red Sea Egypt Vacations – A Diver’s Paradise

To begin, when most people think of scuba diving, they think of the Caribbean and other tropical locales. When they think of Egypt, they think of the Giza Pyramid complex, desert sands and the country’s many historic sites that line the banks of the Nile River in Upper Egypt. However, besides the country’s countless historic sites and its amazing history, Egypt’s Red Sea coatline is where you will find some of the most amazing snorkeling and scuba diving sites in the world.

From gorgeous brightly colored coral reefs to exotic fish and plant-life, you won’t be disappointed with Egypt vacation packages that include snorkeling or diving in the Red Sea at places like Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, and Marsa Alam. Sharm El Sheikh has grown to become a lively city with a vibrant culture of its own, while Hurghada is considerably more laid back, and Marsa Alam even more so.

Even if you are not an experienced diver, Egypt Tours Plus has Egypt vacation packages that let you get your PADI diving certification, which is recognized internationally. Both novice and veteran divers from all over the world will love the opportunities and great deals available for scuba diving in Egypt’s clear blue water during their vacation in Egypt.

In the three places mentioned above, you’ll find miles of amazing hotels, spectacular all inclusive resorts, gorgeous beaches and some of the clearest, most beautiful water in the entire world. Divers can look forward to spotting lionfish, Spanish dancer nudibranch, stingrays, and Hurghada stars, as well as all kinds of other undersea wildlife.

And, when you’re not diving, when you spend time on your Egypt vacation packages in Sharm El Sheikh or Hurghada, you can enjoy vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants, and even camel rides with Bedouins in the desert, too. All inclusive Egypt vacation packages that include Hurghada or Sharm are full of fun and adventure, as well as culture and amazing dining.

Both place are extremely popular among visitors from both Europe and America, and currently prices are very affordable. For the ultimate experience, consider booking a Cairo & Nile cruise package that includes at least two or three days in one of these two amazing coastal resort towns. This will allow you to enjoy private guided tours in Cairo during which you will visit places like the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum and the bustling Khan el Khalili Bazaar before heading to Aswan or Luxor for a 5-Star cruise on the Nile River, after which you will get to spend a few days on Egypt’s beautiful Red Sea coast.

Historical Trips to Egypt

Visit Valley Of The Kings

Vacation Packages to Egypt - Tomb in Valley of the Kings

Inside Tomb of Ramesses VI in Valley of the Kings.

The Valley of the Kings is located in Upper Egypt, on the west bank of the Nile River near modern day Luxor. In terms of visitor numbers, this site is second only to the majestic Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. When you visit Biban El Moluk (the Valley of the Kings), you’ll see some of the most impressive ancient tombs in all of the world. Wear a good pair of walking shoes for Egypt vacation packages that include the Valley of the Kings, though, because you’ll be given the opportunity not just to lay eyes on the exteriors of these impressive tombs, but you will also to be able to enter and explore some of them.

Perhaps the most famous tomb found here is Tutankhamen’s, which was a great find of the 20 th century, as it was not discovered until the 1920s when it was unearthed fully intact. However, you’ll find it interesting as you walk through these ancient burial places, to discover that Tutankhamen was not the wealthiest of pharaohs. You may be surprised to find some of the lesser known of these kings were also some of the wealthiest with some of the largest tombs.

Of course, if you want to see the jewels and treasures that Tutankhamen and other pharaohs were buried with, you won’t find them in the Valley of the Kings. These relics are on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which is itself one of the top tourist attractions in Egypt .

The Valley of Kings can be visited as part of a day trip from Cairo. A one-day Luxor tour will typically also include a visit to other ancient sites in the area, including Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, Hatshepsut Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon. Be aware that with a one-day Luxor tour, you will be following quite a rushed schedule. If you have the time, and if your finances allow for it, We would highly recommend booking and Egypt tour package that includes a Nile cruise since all good Nile cruises include a guided Luxor tour.

See the Temples of Karnak

According to BBC’s Michael Wood, “Karnak is like a theme park of ancient Egyptian religion – in which every god and goddess of that civilization was represented over a period of about 2,000 years.” The temples and other structures here are gathered on the site of the ancient city of Thebes in a space that covers more than a square mile of land. Here you’ll find an incredible diorama of ancient history, including all manners of temples, obelisks, kiosks, and sanctuaries dedicated exclusively to the worship of gods and goddesses.

At Karnak, you’ll see the Great Temple of Amun and its Hypostyle Hall, and there are multiple Light and Sound performances eachevening to bring these amazing pieces of history to life right before your eyes, giving Egypt vacation packages even more appeal. Not surprisingly, a visit to Karnak Temple is included in all of our existing Nile cruises from Luxor to Aswan . Our Aswan to Luxor cruises also include a visit to the Karnak Temple complex which is the second most visited archaeological site in Egypt, second only to the ancient pyramids at the  Giza pyramid complex.

Experience the Luxor Temple

Speaking of ancient Thebes, this site is now the home of the city of Luxor, where you can find even more breathtaking ancient attractions than just the temples at Karnak. In the very center of the city, for example, you’ll find the Temple of Luxor.

Built by Amenhotep III and Ramesses II in approximately 1400 BC, the Temple of Luxor was erected to house celebrations of the festival of Opet. As years passed, the rulers who followed these two continued building onto the impressive structure, and its function turned to a place of worship for Christians and then later for Muslims. You can still see the beautiful mosque that was built inside the temple today.

Daytime visits to the Temple of Luxor during Egypt vacation packages are impressive enough. However, to get the most out of the view, take a walk to this beautiful structure around sunset, as it is especially beautifully illuminated at night, making this a popular time to visit the complex.

Luxor Temple is another ancient monument which features in most of our all-inclusive Egypt holiday packages and in every Nile River cruise offered on our website.

See El-Amarna

Located between Luxor and the Nile River delta is an artifact from one of Egyptian history’s greatest scandals. Many books and movies have been created about the famed Nefertiti and her husband Akhenaten, the “heretic” pharaoh. In potentially the very first attempt at monotheism in history, Akhenaten broke away from worshipping the traditional Egyptian gods and goddesses when he built the new capital and started a new form of worship.

To start anew and commune with their new god Aten (the sun, who replaced Amun), Akhenaten and Nefertiti moved to El-Amarna, their sanctuary of new religious dreams. In just a few years, though, both were dead, and worship turned back to the old gods.

The abandoned royal tombs of El-Amarna still stand in the eastern water channels, and the entire site is both beautiful and lonely. If you’ve ever been caught up with the story of the fabled beauty of Nefertiti and her heretic husband, El-Amarna is a beautiful place to visit to see where the tales you’ve heard and read actually occurred. This ancient gem is best visited by way of a half day trip from Luxor, one of the most interesting Egyptian cities.

Stroll Through the Egyptian Museum of Cairo

Trips to Egypt - Egyptian Museum in Cairo

Interior of Egyptian Museum in Cairo, Egypt.

Of course, most Egypt vacation packages will have to include some time in Cairo to see some of the very best Cairo tourist attractions , including the Pyramids of Giza, the Khan el Khalili market, and the Egyptian Museum. This remarkable museum Cover covers roughly 5,000 years of Egyptian history and Egyptian culture. By visiting this museum before or after you visit the Valley of the Kings and the ancient Egyptian temples of Karnak, you can get an even greater appreciation for the culture and content of these ancient structures when you visit the Egyptian Museum of Cairo.

With over 120,000 artifacts, it is easy to understand why the Egyptian Museum is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Cairo

Including a trip to the Egyptian Museum of Cairo is a great way to get a better feel for Egyptian history and culture before continuing with the rest of your plans for your Egyptian vacation. In fact, if you are at all interested in history, you should always plan to visit this museum along with historical sites on your Egypt vacation packages. With so much history and so many artifacts to peruse, it could take several vacations to Egypt to get a thorough look at everything in the museum.

Spending two or three days in Cairo before heading off to one of the country’s other popular tourist destinations, will allow you to not only enjoy the city’s vibrant culture, but it will also give you time to visit the city’s most famous tourist attractions, including the Egyptian Museum.

Take a Felucca Ride on the River

Of course, not all of your time spent on Egypt vacation packages should be spent in the throes of history lessons. Feluccas (traditional sailboats) have been used to traverse the Nile River for thousands of years, and they’re a great way to see the city and surrounding areas from the water. Whether you’re staying in Cairo, Luxor, or Aswan you can choose to add a short felucca ride to your Egypt trip.

From Cairo, Luxor or Aswan, take a sunset cruise in a felucca and see the cities light up as the sun goes down. From Aswan, you can take a longer felucca cruise up the Nile River, or you can choose an all inclusive river cruise on a luxury cruise ship, depending on what you want to do and experience during your Egypt trip.

A cruise on one of the large five-star cruise ships is a magical experience which you will well and truly never forget. These vessels are akin to an all inclusive 5-Star hotel, With all the amenities you could possibly want, Including things like a large outdoor pool, a fitness center, and etc. For a truly wonderful vacation in Egypt, and the chance to discover the gems of the Nile Valley in absolute comfort and style, A five star all inclusive Nile cruise should definitely be on your bucket list of things to do in Egypt.

Enjoy Hidden History in Deir el-Medina

Another great place to visit during your Egypt vacation package is the village where the people who built the temples and pyramids of Ancient Egypt lived, Deir el-Medina. Located on the west bank of the Nile River, “Tucked away in a little valley under the western cliffs,” you’ll find one of Egypt’s best-kept and most fascinating secrets.

If you’re drawn to Egypt vacations because you’ve always wondered how the pyramids were constructed and how the people who built them lived, then you owe it to yourself to explore Deir el-Medina. You’ll love finding out all about the lives of the ordinary Egyptian men and women who created some of history’s most pictured, filmed, and talked-about structures.

The preserved papyrus texts on the lives of the people who lived in Deir el-Medina are incredibly detailed. Not only will you learn about how they went about their daily tasks, but you can also learn about intriguing details like their love affairs and relationships. If you choose to visit this site, be sure to visit the tomb of a man named Peshedu where you will see a mural depicting his afterlife with his wife, cultivating fields as they did in life.

While a lot of the surviving ruins and temples in Egypt are dedicated to the stories of pharaohs and religion, in Deir el-Medina, you can learn the stories of ordinary people. It’s a wonderful addition to Egypt vacation packages for history buffs and people interested in not only the pyramids but also the lives of the people who built them.

What people love about Egypt Tours

Really enjoyed being in a small group instead of a traditional large group and our guide was great. This was a fast, hit-the-high points type of tour which is what we wanted; but, didn't really get to spend too much time at any one place. Didn't care for the hotel we were based out of - the rooms didn't have opaque walls between the bedroom and bathroom, just glass that was partly translucent; and, the hotel was a long ways away from everything.
I'm an Australian & travelled with my husband & x2 teenage daughters along with another couple & their teenage sons. I followed the reviews on this tour for approx 12 months prior to travel & some reviews had me rather concerned. I reached out to the manager via email @ Beyond The Nile Tours Ahmed. Ahmed went above & beyond to ensure all of my needs/requests were met & guaranteed that this would be the trip of a lifetime, he did not disappoint. On arrival into Cairo were greeted by Ahmed (another AHMED). I immediately felt at ease with his professionalism & he was very well dressed. I knew straight away we were in good hands. He transported us to the Tolip Golden Plaza Hotel promptly. The hotel is very nice, spacious rooms & very clean. The food was ok (but I am fussy)they have a large buffet for breakfast but note they do not supply or serve alcohol at all in this hotel, it didn't matter to me as I don't drink but it may be an issue to others. Alcohol is not readily available in Egypt at all. It was available on the river cruise but it is not available everywhere in Egypt, worth looking into if you like a drink. The first day of the actual tour started with the pyramids, sphinx & the grand museum. Our tour guide was Hamed, he was very friendly & so funny, he also has a degree in Egyptology, he was full of knowledge. In the evening we opted to take the overnight sleeper train from Giza to Luxor & returned on the train from Aswan to Giza. The train, its not first class, its a rattler, the cabins are very small but clean & the bedding was clean, the staff was friendly, but note the guide does not travel with you on the train, a new guide meets you at the other end. We felt safe, the food was ok, I've had worse & no alcohol is served on the train. It was a definite experience our teenagers loved it, its not the worst thing I have ever done but if your keen for flying throughout Egypt (we weren't) take the flight option instead, you will get a better night sleep. Upon arrival in Luxor we had pre-upgraded our river nile cruise boat to the ACAMAR at a cost to Beyond The Nile Tours. After the sleeper train we were up for luxury & that is exactly what we got on this boat, it was next level, over the top service, our own waiter at out table every day, a pastry chef, it was brilliant service. Definitely worth upgrading to this category if its in your budget. Our tour guide for the 4 night river cruise was Saladino. Saladino studies egyptology & has a real passion for ancient Egypt & he is what I would call top notch, doesn't get much better than him. Saladino went above & beyond for my family & friends & is an absolute cretid To Ahmed & the team & Beyond The Nile Tours. He took photos for us, carried our possessions, lined up for us, put us first in queues, he could not do enough for us & he was just brilliant. He made the holiday so memorable for us & we will truly treasure all the knowledge he shared with us regarding his beloved ancient Egypt. Some advice: There is charges on arrival to the company of US $180 per person, this is for all the entry fees @ the sites & tipping to the drivers, boat people etc. This is actually a small price to pay up front as it is absolute bedlam in Egypt & the guides do it all for you, they line up in the heat in with the crowds to purchase the tickets etc so you don't have to do anything. Book all extra tours through Beyond the nile tours. Their experience/service is next level & always guarantees egyptologists travelling with you Pay the extra money at the valley of the kings to see the tomb of Seti I, it is incredible, was the absolute highlight of my holiday, for an extra charge of approx $70 AUS it was worth every cent. Take US dollars with you, you can't change currency into USD in Egypt so you need to change it before you arrive. Eyptian und is used everywhere however they love the US money better. Overall I would highly recommend this tour, Beyond The nIle Tours gave us everything & more & it was the absolute holiday of a lifetime for us. We are truly grateful to Ahmed & his team, book with confidence you will not be disappointed.
This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

Countless women travel to Egypt alone for holidays, and the great majority of them have a wonderful and comfortable time. Many Egyptians think it's strange for a woman to walk alone, so you can get a lot of attention, which is typically just catcalling. Currently, the chance of attracting unwanted attention is significantly lower than the whole past decade and it keeps improving. We all see now Egyptian males have refrained from improper attention to girls for the law has become more stringent towards this issue. In comparison to many other Mid-Eastern nations, the issue of verbal harassment has substantially improved.

One of the most fascinating countries on Earth, Egypt is a vast, living archaeological site whose world-renowned antiquities tell this ancient civilization's compelling story, which has unfolded over some 5,000 years... explore Egypt's historic and cultural treasures – many of which are tucked away in remote desert locations, and have attracted travelers for centuries – firsthand, on unforgettable journeys including cruises on the Egyptian nation's lifeblood, the timeless Nile River.

The pyramids of giza, wonders of the ancient world... giza's pyramids & sphinx.

The only largely intact survivor of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World," the Great Pyramid of Giza (a.k.a. the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops) is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Earth… and reigned as the world's tallest man-made structure for nearly 4,000 years! Completed sometime around 2500 BC, it's the oldest and largest of the complex known as the Great Pyramids of Giza, which also includes the Pyramids of Khafre (Chephren) and Menkaure (Mykerinos), as well as the Great Sphinx, from about the same period as the Great Pyramid. Who built the Sphinx and why is still a mystery that's lasted more than 3,000 years… as you'll learn on your visit to this remarkable site.

The Valley of the Kings

Discovering egypt's valley of the kings.

Nestled in Egypt's Theban hills west of the Nile River, near today's Luxor, stands the Valley of the Kings – where, between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, complexes of tombs were cut out of the rock to house the remains of the Pharaohs and other nobles of Egypt's New Kingdom, and prepare them for the afterlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains more than 60 identified tombs and chambers. While many were once filled with treasures, most have been plundered through the ages… with the exception of that of the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered intact in the 1920s, whose artifacts and remains have been removed and preserved. Visiting any of these tombs today is an experience not to be missed.

Egypt is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is negligible, except on the coast, with rain usually occurring during the winter months (December to March).

During the summer months (from June to August), daily temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) - perfect for snorkeling and soaking up the sun on the beaches of Sinai, but can prove challenging for some in the crowded streets and souqs of Cairo.

Choose to escape the crowds by traveling from March to May or September to November when the weather is milder, and there's the opportunity to experience Egypt during Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid (which marks the breaking of the fast). If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it's important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours.

Culture and customs

Life in Egypt has been in a state of flux since the 2011 revolution. Many of the issues that motivated so many to take to the streets in protest continue to be points of contention, but Egyptians remain hopeful, relying on religion, family and humor to get them through, like they have for thousands of years. A strong sense of community binds people across the country. Families and communities support each other and there is a prevailing sense that everyone is in it together. For all these reasons, most express great pride in being Egyptian, despite their nation’s recent turmoil.

As a largely Muslim country (about 90% of the population is Muslim while most of the remaining 10% identify as Coptic Christian), Islam permeates daily activities. Life revolves around the five daily prayers and everything is closed on Friday, the Muslim holy day. A wide array of cultural norms, including how people dress and interact with the opposite sex, are influenced by religion. Women are largely defined by their role as a mother and matron of the house, whereas men are expected to be the provider.

Many Egyptians consider their country the gateway between the West and the rest of the Arab world, and take pride in their ability to mix tradition with modern influences. This mixing is most apparent in major cities, such as Cairo and Alexandria, where American fast-food chains can be found next to traditional cafes, secular attitudes are more common, and pop music rings through city streets.

Food and drink

With fragrant spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and delicious sweets on offer, culinary adventures in Egypt are guaranteed. On many Intrepid trips you'll be given the opportunity to dine with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the ingredients.

Things to try in Egypt

1. Hamam mahshi

A north African delicacy, hamam – roasted pigeon stuffed with cracked wheat and rice – can be found on the menu of most traditional Egyptian restaurants. You may need a few to fill up though, as they don’t contain a lot of meat. And be careful of all the tiny bones.

2. Ta'ameya (falafel)

Crunchy on the outside, and moist on the inside, these deep-fried balls of spiced fava beans are a Middle Eastern vegetarian staple. Usually served in a pita with salad, pickles, and sesame-based tahina - buy it at a street stall for a quick, cheap meal.

Shops specializing in this popular ‘poor man’s dish’ can be found throughout Cairo. A hearty mix of rice, macaroni and lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions, koshary is topped with a tomato-vinegar sauce.

4. Ful medames

Don't leave Egypt without trying the classic dish of ful medames, which can be traced back to pharaonic times. Consisting of slow-cooked fava beans, served with olive oil, parsley, garlic, and lemon juice - add some spice by seasoning with chili paste and eat with bread.

5. Pastries

Delicious, sweet pastries are found in restaurants, markets, and cafes in Egypt. Never was there a better time to live by the adage ‘Life is short, eat dessert first’.

Egypt is a mostly Muslim country, and any consumption of alcohol here is relatively low-key. There are many fantastic alternatives. Juice stands are common on main streets offering freshly squeezed banana, guava, or mango juice. Karkadai is a chilled, crimson drink brewed from hibiscus leaves (served hot in the winter). And tea (or shai) is the beverage of choice for most Egyptians, which is sipped throughout the day and with meals.

Geography and environment

Located in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt shares its borders with Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Libya, and Sudan, as well as the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. The two seas are connected by the man-made Suez Canal.

The remote triangle-shaped peninsula is largely characterized by limestone and desert, but also has a vibrant coral reef along the Red Sea coastline. Hot, dry desert covers most of the country’s terrain, with the Western Desert occupying much of the west, and the Arabian (or Eastern) Desert stretching the length of the eastern coast. These two regions are dissected by the Nile River, which runs the length of the country, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. The Nile Valley, a narrow fertile band extending from the river, is the country’s only fertile land and where 98% of the population lives.

History and government

Recent history.

Napoleon Bonaparte, the infamous pint-sized French leader, invaded Egypt in 1798, seeking to set up a French colony. However, not long after, the French were repelled, and Egypt became a part of the Ottoman Empire once again.

From 1882, the British Army occupied Egypt to protect the Suez Canal. Muhammad Ali officially ruled from the early 1800s, and his family and successors continued to rule for decades (alongside and during British occupation) until overthrown by a military coup in 1952.

During World War II, Egypt became a crucial element in Britain's defense. The Italian Army tried to advance into Egypt in 1940 but was stopped by the British Army at Mersa Matruh. Egypt continued to serve as a vital base for British troops during World War II and despite the disruption, Egypt's shopkeepers and retail trade benefitted from the thousands of Allied troops staying in Egypt.

In 1953, Egypt was officially declared a republic, and a year later, Colonel Nasser was declared Prime Minister, then President. In 1979, after decades of confrontation with neighboring Israel, the historic Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty was signed. This agreement made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel as a country - a significant step in the peace process. More recently, in February 2011, large-scale protests and mass demonstrations resulted in the removal of President Mubarak after decades of autocratic rule.

Early history

Ancient Egypt has been the focus of much fascination, investigation, speculation, and intrigue. It's hard to escape the education system without having studied Ancient Egypt in some way. Drawn in by the mighty pyramids, mysterious hieroglyphics, distinct burial rituals and animal-headed gods - scholars, students, historians, and travelers are all amazed by this civilization which has endured cycles of dynastic rule, invasion, and natural disasters.

Through key archaeological finds, historians have been able to unravel some of the mysteries of this great land. What is known is that the daily life of the average Egyptian usually involved working in agriculture with the waters of the Nile providing fertile ground for planting crops. Egyptians usually lived in modest homes with children and domestic pets. Professions were usually inherited - so if your father was a farmer, then so were you.

While most Egyptians led simple lives, dynasties of Pharaohs led lavish lifestyles, with the most well-known being Ramses II, Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, Tutankhamun, and Cleopatra. Huge monuments, imposing pyramids, golden artifacts, and detailed paintings all hold details about pharaonic rule and succession, as well as commonly held beliefs about religion and the afterlife.

Spanning centuries and full of drama worthy of a soap opera, the epic history of Ancient Egypt is complex and we suggest you read about it before visiting.

Top 10 ancient wonders of Egypt

1. grand designs.

The original grand design - monumental and magnificent - the Pyramids of Giza are an impressive achievement in ancient engineering. Towering above the desert sands and standing proudly for centuries, the first glimpse of these stunning structures will render visitors breathless.

2. Stony enigma

Be captivated by the mysterious aura of the Great Sphinx of Giza. This monolithic mythical beast possesses a lion’s body and a human head - and has sat quietly in the desert sands for eons. Gaze at the Sphinx and try to work out the riddle of its existence.

3. Mighty Nile River

No trip to Egypt is complete without visiting the Nile River - the life force of Egypt that has flowed for centuries. A provider of irrigation, an essential travel route, home to hippos and crocodiles, and now a source of leisure for locals and travelers alike, the Nile is an aquatic link to Egypt’s ancient heritage.

4. Terrific temples

Discover an enormous open-air museum like no other. The awe-inspiring Temples of Karnak are filled with stately statues, immense columns, and gigantic gateways. Explore this intriguing site and be left in no doubt about the brilliance of the ancient Egyptian civilization.

5. Holy mountain

Embark on a trek to the top of Mt Sinai and witness an incredible golden sunrise to remember. A place of worship for many faiths, a pilgrimage to Mt Sinai reveals stunning scenery, an ancient monastery and historic chapels. An iconic highlight of Egypt for believers and non-believers alike, Mt Sinai is not to be missed.

6. Double happiness

Located in the Nile Valley, the unique Temple of Kom Ombo is a ‘double temple’ and a rare archaeological find. Dedicated to two gods, a visit here is a true highlight of an Egyptian escapade. Marvel at the well-preserved wall reliefs, try to decipher the hieroglyphics and honour the craftsmen who created this wonder.

7. Museum magic

Step into a dazzling world of antiquity at the Egyptian Museum. Be amazed by the glittering treasures recovered from King Tutankhamun’s tomb – with jewelry, furniture, chariots and that famous gold funerary mask, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

8. Roman ruins

The Roman ruins of Kom el-Dikka in Alexandria may not be the biggest, but they are certainly among the best-preserved in Egypt, if not the world. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheater and imagine it in all its glory - packed with 800 spectators ready for action.

9. Colossal characters

Near the modern city of Luxor stand the imposing Colossi of Memnon. These massive stone statues of Amenhotep III, while badly damaged, still maintain an unmistakable air of authority. Stand below them and be dwarfed by the scale of these tremendous figures.

10. The ancient heart of Cairo

Wander the cobbled streets of Islamic Cairo and uncover the ancient heart of this chaotic city. Admire mosques, palaces and houses, and peruse the goods on offer at one of the world’s oldest bazaars. Dating back to medieval times, the Khan al-Khalili bazaar is where people have traded goods for centuries.

Souqs – or open-air bazaars – are both the best place to shop in Egypt and attractions in their own right. The biggest and most famous souq is the 500-year-old Khan El Khalili Bazaar in Cairo. Within the maze of narrow streets and laneways lie stalls selling jewelry, glass, copper, spices and artisan goods, along with more standard tourist fare. Quality can vary greatly so spend some time shopping around.

Like many markets around the world, bargaining is the norm, but Egyptians take it to another level. Expect to be offered tea (it can take that long) and for elaborate theatrics from the seller. While bazaars in Cairo tend to sell everything, visit Aswan’s bazaar for spices, incense, and basketwork, and Luxor for cheaply priced alabaster figurines and vases. It's also a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Egypt

You’ll often see spices piled high in bazaars. In addition to making a great photo for Instagram, they’re often a good buy as long as you keep a couple of things in mind. Always buy whole spices rather than ground to ensure freshness and skip the ‘saffron’ – it’s actually safflower and tastes like dust.

2. Glassware

Hand-blown Muski glass, recognizable by its air bubbles, comes in brilliant shades of blue and green and purple and has been made in Egypt since medieval times. Be careful with this purchase though as it’s extremely fragile.

3. Cartouche

A kind of nameplate written in hieroglyphics. Most gold or silver shops sell these and many can customize them by engraving your name.

Festivals and events

Eid al-Fitr

After fasting for an entire month, Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, or ‘Feast of Breaking the Fast’. For three days, starting on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar, people celebrate with feasts, family, and festivals. Look for vendors selling kahk cookies (nut-filled cookies covered in powdered sugar) while taking in the festivities, a tasty treat synonymous with Eid for many locals.

Eid al-Adha

Arguably the most important holiday in Egypt, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’ is not one for vegetarians and vegans. About 70 days after Eid al-Fitr, sheep, and goats are slaughtered (often in the middle of the street) for a mighty feast.

Sham el-Nessim

Each year on March 21st, Egyptians celebrate the coming of spring by spending the day outdoors. Join the locals for this ancient holiday by packing a picnic and heading to a park or public garden.

Abu Simbel Sun Festival

As if the two temples dedicated to Ramses II and Queen Nefertari weren’t impressive enough, they were constructed in such a way that twice a year, the sun’s rays reach its innermost chambers and illuminate three stone gods that reside within, while leaving Ptah (god of the underworld) in the dark. And those days just happen to be Ramses’s birthday (October 21) and coronation (February 21). Coincidence? We think not.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Egypt?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Egypt?

Tipping is customary for pretty much all services in Egypt. A tip of 10–15% is customary at cafes and restaurants and loose change is acceptable for food purchases from street vendors and markets. It’s also a good idea to tip local guides and drivers USD$2.50-3 per day.

What is the internet access like in Egypt?

Internet access is growing in Egypt, with internet cafes and Wi-Fi hotspots becoming increasingly common in large cities, especially Cairo, though access may be limited in smaller towns and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone in Egypt?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Egypt’s urban areas, but may not be available in remote and desert areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Egypt?

Squat toilets are most common in Egypt, although Western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in Egypt?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Egypt. Remember to avoid drinks with ice and to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Ask your leader or hotel where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Egypt?

Credit cards are usually accepted by modern hotels, large retailers, and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors in remote areas. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

Is Egypt a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI travelers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences. Be aware that signals are ambiguous in Egypt as men commonly hold hands, link arms and greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. As long as you use common sense, travel in Egypt should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex  or ILGA before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

What to wear in Egypt

Summer temperatures can get very high, so light fabrics like linen, cotton and athletic gear made to take the heat are best. If you’re traveling outside of winter, don’t underestimate the cool change that can come in the evenings, especially if you’re spending the night in the desert or on a Nile cruise. Avoid packing anything in white – desert dust will quickly turn those light-colored clothes a not-so-delightful shade of brown.

How will I travel around Egypt?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Adaptor plug

In Egypt, the standard voltage is 220 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type C and F. The standard frequency is 50 Hz.

Comfortable shoes

Cairo, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan ... on our complete tour we'll see all the unmissable sights in Egypt in 8 days . The best way to really discover the land of the Pharaohs!

Visiting the Karnak temple

Best of Egypt: 8-Day All-Inclusive Tour

On the first day, we'll be waiting for you at the Cairo airport to give you your visa and help you with immigration controls before taking you to your hotel , and eating in a local restaurant in the evening. If your flight arrives after 9 pm, we'll instead furnish you with a cold picnic at the hotel.

After breakfast, we'll visit the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx , where the bravest can see the inside, dodging the ancient booby traps the ancient builders left to deter grave robbers! Then with the visit to Egypt's most famous historical site over, we'll eat a traditional lunch and make our way to Memphis, Egypt's first capital , and to Saqqara, its necropolis  as well as the famous statue of  Ramses II.

Then, after a short rest at the hotel, we'll head to  Old Cairo , to the medieval area where we'll walk its oldest street, explore the  Khan el Khalili market , and eat a typical dinner in the famous and historical Café of Mirrors .

On our third day, we'll visit the most emblematic downtown spots. We'll see the Citadel , explore the Alabaster Mosque , haggle in the Khan el Khalili, pass through the Coptic neighborhood , eat, and marvel at the masterworks of the Egyptian Museum  (entrance to the Mummy's Room is not included). Then in the evening, we'll eat at a local restaurant.

After another strong breakfast, we'll make our way to the airport to take a flight to Luxor , once called Thebes , from where our cruise down the Nile starts. At this fascinating destination, we'll visit the Luxor Temple  - which will perhaps be the most enduring image of our trip - and tour the city center on a horse-drawn carriage . Finally, we'll take you to the hotel where we'll rest until the next day.

Early in the morning, we'll make our way to the Karnak Temple , separated from the Luxor temple by the majestic Avenue of the Sphinxes , nearly 2 miles long and lined with hundreds of human-headed sphinxes.

The tour will then continue, crossing to the East bank of the Nile to see the Valley of the Kings , where the tombs of some of the most famous pharaohs can be found (entrance to Tutankhamun's tomb is an extra € 16 ( US$ 17.30), approximately). And we'll visit the Hatshepsut temple and the enormous Colossi of Memnon .

Then, when we return to the boat, we'll cruise southwards up the river Nile, towards Edfu, enjoying a wander around the floodgates of Esna in the evening .

We begin the day by visiting the Temple of Edfu , dedicated to the god Horus, the sky God. This also happens to be the best-preserved and most spectacular temple in the country . Then, we'll continue our cruise, sailing towards Kom Ombo.

As we arrive, we'll visit the  temple , dedicated to the Gods Sobek and Horus - whose location makes it one of the most beautiful. Then, at the end of the day, we'll continue to sail the River Nile   towards  Aswan .

Note : the visit to Edfu includes transport by buggy. If you prefer to travel by a different means of transport, please let the guide know the day before. Opting for a different mode of transport incurs an additional fee of € 15 ( US$ 16.20) per person.

The day begins with a bus  trip to the Temples of Abu Simbel , the most famous in all of Egypt, saved from the  rising waters of the Nile  thanks to a coordinated international effort. We'll return to Aswan and, along the way, catch a glimpse of the Aswan Dam, one of the most impressive engineering feats of the 20th century.

Additionally, we'll also visit the Temple of Filae , found on a beautiful island known as the Jewel of the Nile , returning to the cruise ship to eat. Then, after lunch, we'll sail around the region in a  Felucca  (a traditional wooden boat) found along the Nile, arriving back to the cruise ship at 4 pm to spend the night. Of course, you'll have the rest of the evening free to enjoy the area at your own pace before bedtime!

Having eaten breakfast, we'll take you to the Aswan airport, where we'll take the return flight to Cairo . Once there, you're free to move on to your connecting or international flight.

We'll adapt the departure time from Aswan depending on the timing of your flight from Cairo. If it leaves early, we'll leave Aswan earlier and offer you a continental breakfast or something to go. If your Cairo flight is in the evening, we'll offer you breakfast on board the boat before taking you to Aswan to take your flight to Cairo.

The order of the itinerary is indicative and subject to change, but all visits described will take place. Depending on the day of your arrival, you may visit Cairo first and then do the cruise, or vice versa.

What Do I Need?

The only thing you need to make this tour is a roundtrip flight from Cairo , arriving on the day you've reserved and returning on the same day the next week. That means if you arrive on a Monday you should return the next Monday.
