What type of doctors bag should you use for visiting patients? A guide by DrGandalf

The debate on what type of bag you should use when visiting patients rages on. In this video I show you my choices and what you should consider when buying a visiting bag as a doctor.

eGPlearning Podblast on Google Podcasts

So which type of doctors bag should you consider?

There are generally two schools of thought on this:

  • not a hard bag

The clear benefit of a hard bag is the fact it can be used as a seat for home visits. Additionally, the more robust nature can imitate security for contents and rarely personal security. Whether hard or soft, in terms of cost this may vary from bargain basement rucksack from your local shop to designer medical or retail bags including maternity bags.

In reality what you truly need is simply a comfortable bag to carry, with several pockets, somewhere to keep paperwork and ideally a lock on one compartment if you plan on carrying FP10 prescriptions and/or meds.

The bags I mention and more:

The Merlin Morgan bag – was my first doctor’s bag. Really large, robust and more pockets than a magician (hence the name I guess). I now use it as my camera bag.

Alternatives are the Gima utility bag with a packet which a colleague has used for a while. The extra packet is useful for keeping medications and small items in. Alternately an effective camera bag can be a great choice as a doctor’s visiting bag and on several forums, these are often the preferred options my many.

My first Hi-Tec rucksack visit bag was ok but my current Hi-Tec visiting bag is much better. It has lasted me about 4 years now, is large enough to carry everything I need but still small enough to be portable and functional. The material could be better padded and insulated, an issue in cold weather which can affect equipment working like thermometers.

Trainee bag- Duragadget This is the doctors bag we have for our trainees. It is similar to the Hi-Tec bag above but solves the insulation issue. It is also waterproof.

Harder bags like pilot chest are preferred by many given they are more robust and business like.

Or makeup chests can be a great option if you want a really solid bag that you can also sit on. the multiple compartments make this really useful.

Kipling bags: and Mulberry bag s are good fashion bags that can be effective as a visit bag. NOt my particular preference but often a good choice and ones several colleagues have used.

IYASU is a company that is looking to make visit bags specifically designed for doctors in the UK. Keep an eye out for more information.

Essential Items to Pack in Your Hospital Bag Before Your Next Stay

Get prepared for your next hospital stay with this comprehensive checklist of essential items to pack in your hospital bag.

Packing your hospital overnight bag

Going to a hospital is inherently stressful, whether it's an emergency situation, a series of tests or elective surgery.

Properly preparing for your hospital stay helps alleviate stress . Understanding what to pack and what to leave behind plays a crucial role in helping patients navigate their hospital stay more smoothly.

Bringing the right items, including important documents and personal care items, not only makes your stay less overwhelming but also assists your health care providers in delivering optimal care.

"Having information that is key to care, such as a list of prescriptions , along with items that bring added comfort allow patients, doctors and nurses to focus on medical procedures and recovery," says Bianca Radney, vice president of patient and family experience for Texas Health Resources based in Arlington, Texas.

Here is what to pack for a hospital stay:

Close up wrinkled female hands holding paper document. Smiling happy middle aged senior woman reading letter, feeling excited by good news, final banking loan credit mortgage payment notification.

1. Legal documents

When preparing for an overnight stay, particularly an intensive procedure, it's important to have certain legal documents on hand to ensure smooth communication and care. These include:

  • Medical power of attorney.
  • Durable power of attorney.
  • Living well or advance health care directive.
  • Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order, if that's your preference and you have one.

Be sure to bring a durable power of attorney – or a more comprehensive legal document granting someone the authority to make legal, financial, personal and health-related decisions on your behalf – if you have one.

An advance health care directive, which many people with cancer or another chronic condition have, is a legal document that details the type of medical care you desire if you become gravely ill and are near death. The directive specifies what type of medical treatments you wish to receive and which ones you don't want. The document can designate an individual – a medical power of attorney, also known as a health care proxy – who will make sure your health care decisions are honored if you become incapacitated and unable to make decisions for yourself.

2. Toiletries

Whether you plan on staying at the hospital for one night or for several, it's a good idea to bring basic toiletries, including:

  • Hairbrush or comb.
  • Toothpaste.
  • Toothbrush.
  • Dental floss.
  • Shampoo and conditioner.
  • Soap or other skin care products.
  • Shaving cream and razor.
  • Tampons or sanitary pads.
  • Ear plugs, as hospital machines often beep loudly throughout the night.

Hospitals can provide some personal care items, but if you are particular about what products you use, be sure to pack those in your bag to make your hospital stay more comfortable.

3. Reading material

Want to read the latest hot mystery novel? Looking to catch up on a well-reviewed nonfiction book on contemporary politics? Feeling guilty about copies of your magazine subscription that are stacking up in your bedroom? You’re likely to have lots of down time between tests and preparing for surgery , so having reading material on hand can help pass the time.

Consider packing items like:

  • Magazines or newspapers.
  • Coloring books.
  • Audiobooks or podcasts, if you'd prefer to listen rather than read.

An electronic tablet can help you save space, if you have one. You can download several books on your device, without having to pack physical books.

“Reading is wonderful if you don’t want to watch TV in your room,” says Gary Mennie, chief medical officer for the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur. “Otherwise, you’re sitting in your room, bored.”

4. Electronics

When packing your hospital overnight bag, consider electronic items that can provide entertainment, communication or relaxation, such as:

  • Headphones or earbuds.
  • Tablet or laptop.

Be considerate of a potential roommate or hospital staff by using earbuds to watch TV shows, videos and movies on your phone or laptop in shared spaces.

Patients sometimes forget to pack their chargers when they're discharged from the hospital . Consider setting a reminder for yourself or asking a family or friend to be responsible for ensuring it's packed before you leave.

Prioritize comfort and practicality when packing your hospital overnight bag. Consider the following clothing items:

  • Loose-fitting pajamas.
  • Robe or cardigan.
  • Eye mask for sleeping, as hospital lights can be bright.
  • Slippers or comfortable shoes.
  • Change of clothes for discharge.

If you want to wear something more robust than a flimsy hospital gown, it’s OK to bring your favorite robe or comfortable pajamas, Mennie says. Some people tend to feel cold and will feel more comfortable wearing their own fleece or cotton robe.

Loose-fitting nightclothes – especially button-up tops that are easy to put on and take off – shouldn’t hinder the efforts of nurses to check your blood pressure , draw blood or conduct other needed tests.

dr visit bag

6. Essential personal items

If you're one of the 30 million Americans who uses a CPAP mask for sleep apnea, an eye mask or ear plugs to help you get some shuteye, being away from home for one or more nights doesn't mean throwing your whole routine out the window.

Consider bringing essential personal care items that contribute to your overall comfort, well-being and any specific medical needs, such as:

  • CPAP machine or other breathing aids.
  • Eyeglasses or contact lenses and supplies.
  • Dentures or dental appliances.
  • Mobility aids, like a cane or walker.
  • Hearing aids or assistive listening devices.

Forgetting an essential personal item could be detrimental to your care. For example, it will be vital to be able to clearly hear what your nurses and doctors tell you about your procedure and your recovery, says Tanya Barahona, a registered nurse and patient educator at Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Irvine, California. So, not having your hearing aids with you could mean missing key information.

If you grind your teeth when you sleep and wear a night guard to protect your teeth, be sure to include that in your hospital bag as well – particularly because hospital stays are often associated with stress and anxiety, a common trigger for teeth grinding.

7. Personal documents

Whatever procedure you're scheduled for, you'll need to provide personal identification or documentation when you check in at the hospital registration desk. Having this information on hand will help ensure a smooth admission process and that you receive accurate medical care.

You should bring your:

  • Driver's license or another government-issued ID card.
  • Health insurance information.
  • Medicare or Medicaid card, if applicable.
  • Health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) information, if applicable.
  • Emergency contact information.

For quick and easy access, keep all of your important documents organized in a particular pocket of a backpack or inside a file folder.

8. Writing materials

It’s likely that your health care provider will be telling you important information during your hospital stay. The volume of information may feel overwhelming, so it's a good idea to write down what your clinical care team says about your test results, procedure, recovery and treatment plan.

To help you keep track, you should bring:

  • Pen or pencil.

While a small notebook or journal can be useful for writing down thoughts to help pass the time or as an outlet during a tough few days in the hospital, it is also useful for jotting down any questions you have for your health care providers . It's easy to forget important questions or concerns, especially during a quick, unexpected stop-by visit from your care team or if you're taking medication that makes you groggy. Writing down your questions as they arise serves as a great memory aid.

In addition to documenting symptoms, procedures and test results, you want to write down anything else that seems relevant to your care or your patient experience, says Jennifer L. FitzPatrick, a certified speaking professional based in Chester, Maryland, and author of the book "Reimagining Customer Service in Healthcare."

Consider jotting down the names of staff members who are particularly helpful so you can ask for them if you need an ally or advocate. You also want to document if there are any positive or negative experiences in case you need to remember them when you are asked to complete a review of the hospital.

"Hospitals take those comments very seriously," FitzPatrick says.

9. Personal medical information and history

When considering what to pack for an overnight hospital stay, it's crucial to bring:

  • List of medications.
  • List of allergies.
  • List of your health care providers and their contact information.
  • Your medical history.
  • Copies of recent test results, like X-rays, MRIs or blood tests.

Your health care providers in the hospital will need this information for several reasons:

  • To make sure you take the medications you need.
  • To avoid giving you any meds that might interact or affect you in an adverse way. For instance, some medications can increase the risk of heart failure .
  • In case of emergency to let them know what they can or can't administer when immediate treatment is needed.
  • For care coordination.
  • To avoid unnecessary tests or procedures.

Dr. Joyce Wahr, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota Medical School, notes that many patients have multiple physicians for different medical conditions and may use more than one pharmacy, which may make it feel overwhelming to construct an accurate and comprehensive list of medications and allergies for your hospital health care providers.

If that is your situation, your primary health care provider should be able to help you compile a list of your prescription medications and allergies.

Medical shot pills. blue pills in a bottle.

10. Your medications

On top of your list of meds, don't forget to bring along the actual medications too. You’ll typically want to keep taking your prescription medications during your hospital stay, Mennie says.

Bring your medications in their original containers, and consider noting dosage instructions for each medication you take. If you're taking heart medication or antidepressants , you should try to maintain your usual regimen unless your regular physician or hospital provider advises against it.

11. Friends and family

Of course, you won't literally "pack" a friend or a loved one, but it's important that someone who knows you and your health history is with you at the hospital as much as possible, Wahr says.

The presence of a relative or trusted friend could help you stay calm and centered before your procedure, as well as after the surgery , when you're coming off of sedation and are confused, groggy and disoriented.

"Having someone to hear what the doctors and nurses say who can also ask questions and advocate for the patient is very important," Wahr says. "Patient's families and friends know a lot about the patient and can help get the right care for (them)."

Ideally, you should have at least one friend or family member with you each day you are in the hospital to help keep your spirits up, to keep track of what doctors and nurses are saying about your care and recovery and to speak up for you if needed, FitzPatrick says.

"Push back if the hospital refuses you the right to have a minimum of one visitor," FitzPatrick adds. "Everyone needs at least one family member or friend to cheer them up, distract them and to serve as an advocate."

All You Need To Know About Leather Doctor’s Bags

Table of contents.

What is a Doctor’s Bag?

A doctor’s bag (also known as a gladstone bag) is a bag traditionally used by doctors to carry around medical supplies when visiting patients. Typically a smart, structured bag made from stiff leather (a saddle or vegetable tanned leather ) the bags have a large opening at the top, allowing them to be opened widely.

History of the Doctor’s Bag

During the World Wars military surgeons would make use of the bags for getting necessary tools and medicines to fallen soldiers, often dodging fire to do so. The lightweight style of the bag was more important than ever, not to mention the fact that they could be opened wide to make it easy to get to necessary equipment quickly.

Today, some of the original bags are collectable antique items. The smell of original bags still contain aromas from the medicines doctors would carry.

What Can A Doctor’s Bag Be Used For?

Due to their large, storage focused design and wide opening, leather doctor medical bags make great travel bags or briefcases. Using a leather doctor bag as a briefcase takes the timeless design right back to its original use by Prime Minister Gladstone. The wide opening and large design makes it ideal for carrying around laptops, documents and notepads.

A vintage leather doctor bag can make a really trendy overnight bag. Just like with it’s other potential uses, the bag’s size, lightweightness and large opening make it a convenient yet stylish bag for travel.

Smaller designs of the doctor bag also make great purses or handbags. New designs take elements from the original bags while modernising and adapting for uses other than to carry medical equipment.

15 essentials you should bring to every doctor appointment.

dr visit bag

Editor's Note

We hope the products below, all recommended by our Mighty community members, help you or a loved one in your health journeys. Just so you know, The Mighty may collect a share of sales from the Amazon links on this page.

As a kid with complex health issues, I pretty much left all the stress and preparation for appointments to my parents – all I had to do was show up! But once I hit adulthood and started managing my own care, I quickly realized how much organization and preparedness can affect the helpfulness and productivity of the appointment.

Preparing for an appointment can mean anything from gathering all your medical records to wearing comfortable clothing. Everyone has different needs and priorities, but there are certain items that can help an appointment go smoothly by keeping your doctor 100 percent informed and up-to-date on all aspects of your condition, and ensuring you both leave the appointment feeling confident and in agreement about how to proceed in managing your health.

To help you prepare for your next appointment, we asked our Mighty community which essentials they bring with them whenever they visit the doctor. Here are their recommendations.

1. A List of Topics and Questions to Discuss With Your Doctor

notepad that says 'the list' with lines and boxes to check off

In the days (or weeks) leading up to your appointment, jot down every question, concern or point of discussion you want to bring up with your doctor, and bring this list with you to your appointment. Meeting with doctors can sometimes be stressful or rushed, so having a list of all the topics you want to cover ensures you don’t forget anything.

“ A list of what I need to talk about. Seriously. This saves me so much anxiety and worry about forgetting things. It ensures we will get to everything on it, especially if I warn them about having a list beforehand,” recommended Alex Payne.

“ A list of different questions,” said Nicole Gray. “I used to have a number of questions in my mind that I was convinced I would remember; however, on reaching the doctor’s office I’d often find my mind blank, unable to remember what it was I’d wanted to say. Having a list of questions (or even a few bullet points to cover what I wanted to say) really helps me remember everything I want to cover.”

“ At least one question about a treatment we haven’t tried, one question about a medication we haven’t tried and I try to have a question about non-standard treatments such as Eastern medicine,” added Masha Polinski.

Buy the “list” notepad above for $8.95 from Amazon .

2. A Trusted Friend or Family Member

husband and wife greeting a doctor

It can be helpful to have some back-up if you have a friend or family member who can accompany to your appointment or even drive you there. This person can support you, ask questions and help remember everything the doctor says.

“ As [silly] as this sounds, my mom,” wrote Ciera Maxson. “1. I am a nervous wreck and start talking too fast or end up bumbling my words and my mom is basically my translator, and 2. Doctors seem to listen more when there is another person present in the room.”

“ Someone else to help remember, to ask questions I may not think of, to push to bring up things I may be too anxious to mention and to just support me in general,” Sarah Nelson told us.

“My husband!” said  Adrian Bryant.  “He’s my second set of ears and catches things that I miss. He’s also my advocate and my voice when I get overwhelmed!”

3. Snacks and Water

kind bars and nalgene water bottle

Even if you don’t feel hungry, packing some snacks and water can come in handy – especially if you have to wait for a while before seeing your doctor. I’ve often found that the anticipation of an appointment silences my hunger, but then halfway through my stomach starts making some scary noises. Staying hydrated and nourished can help you think more clearly and focus on the issues you want to discuss with your doctor. Plus, as someone with notoriously “bad” veins, I like to hydrate as much as possible in case I have to get blood work done after my appointment. The fewer pokes, the better!

(Note: Some doctor’s offices or hospitals may not allow you to bring in outside food or drinks, though water is usually OK. Check the office’s policies before bringing in or consuming food.)

“Snacks like energy bars and a water bottle,” recommended Jenny Cerny.

“Comfort food!!” wrote Kristin Neely. “Always gotta be prepared when bad news strikes.”

Buy the KIND bars above (12-ct.) for $14.50 from Amazon . Buy the water bottle above for $10.99 from Amazon .

4. Day Planner

day planner

A day planner can be useful even when you’re not at the doctor. It’s a great way to keep track of when you’ve scheduled appointments, tests, procedures, etc., but can also be a good place to write yourself time-sensitive reminders. For instance, I have to give myself an injection every four weeks, so in my calendar I mark my injection days as well as the dates I need to call my pharmacy to order my next dose and the date each dose is scheduled to be delivered.

“ Day planner,” recommended Candice Phillips, “so I can give accurate dates for medication and symptom changes, along with tests and appointments with other doctors.”

“ My daily/monthly planner,” said Sierra Brown. “I forget everything so I use it to track all of my symptoms, blood pressure, medications used, appointments, tests, etc, etc. I also make a list of what needs to be discussed, that way, I open it and it’s all there with me.”

“ I bring my planner so I don’t double book appointments,” added Katherine Moore.

Buy the day planner above for $8.95 from Amazon .

5. Something to Read

harry potter and the sorcerer's stone

Going to the doctor often involves a lot of waiting, but bringing along something to read can help pass the time. Personally, I enjoy reading fun or lighthearted fiction to lighten the mood and transport me far away from the sterile, clinical atmosphere of a waiting room.

“A book to distract me when the wifi or signal is low,” said Jenny Cerny.

Mackenzie Porter wrote,  “ A book because I tend to have to wait at least 40 minutes after my appointment time to be seen.”

Buy the book above for $6.99 from  Amazon .

6. Necklace Essential Oil Diffuser

necklace diffuser and peppermint and lavender essential oils

If essential oils help you avoid offensive scents, stay calm, relieve nausea, etc., then you can bring them on the go to your appointment with a necklace diffuser. The type of essential oil you use depends on your specific needs. For instance, if you tend to feel stressed or anxious at the doctor, then a soothing scent like lavender may help.

Sheri Peterson Hildreth said,  “ With all the scents/odors/smells around anywhere (especially confined spaces) I always have my necklace diffuser with peppermint essential oil. That allows for quick reaction time to try to stem the offending smells hopefully before they can cause adverse reactions.”

Buy the necklace diffuser above for $25.97 from Amazon . Buy the peppermint essential oil above for $6.99 from Amazon . Buy the lavender essential oil above for $6.99 from Amazon .

7. Medical Records and Information

expanding file folder

This is arguably one of the most essential items to bring to your appointment (even if you’re like me and have so many medical files you can barely carry them all). Especially if you’re seeing a new doctor, it’s critical to bring all the medical information you have so they can be completely up to date on you and your health. Here are some ideas of the types of information it can be helpful to bring:

  • A list of your current symptoms
  • A list of your past symptoms, and the dates you experienced them
  • A list of your current medication
  • A list of your past medication, any adverse reactions, and why you stopped taking them
  • Past procedures/surgeries, including dates
  • Results from lab work, imaging, medical tests, etc.
  • Names, phone numbers, fax numbers and addresses of all your doctors
  • Names, phone numbers and relationships of emergency contacts
  • The name, phone number, fax number and address of your pharmacy

Even if you have this information on your phone, having a hard copy allows you to hand it to your doctor for them to easily review and make copies to keep in their records if they so choose.

In terms of organizing, find the system that works for you. Maybe you want to keep everything together in a folder, or maybe you want to split it up by document type or by doctor in an expanding file (like the one featured above). Whatever helps you stay organized, go for it.

“[I bring] a list of all the medications I’ve already tried and why they didn’t work,” said  Gemma Stacey-Harvey. “ Otherwise they suggest the same old stuff that hasn’t worked, or I reacted badly to. This cuts down the explaining time and then we can get onto the important brainstorming of what is left and why it might help.”

Amanda Gordon suggested,  “ A detailed medical information packet that includes my diagnoses, surgeries, medications, doctors/specialists, emergency contacts and what to do in case of an emergency for medical professionals due to the rareness of some of my conditions.”

“A list of my current symptoms in order of their current severity,” said  Delores Luttropp.  “I give it to my doctor’s nurse, and my doctor reads it before he comes in. Gives us a good place from which to start our time together, and it has proven to be very a productive tool.”

8. Your Phone

woman looking at her iphone

Chances are you probably take your phone just about everywhere you go already. Though hard copies of medical records and information are important, your phone can prove helpful in a number of other ways. You can take photos or videos of symptoms while they’re flaring to show the doctor (my visible symptoms always seem to magically vanish the day of my appointment…), reference any notes you’ve recorded digitally or, if you use any symptom-tracking apps, that information can be beneficial as well.

“ My phone,” said Marisa Powers. “I know it sounds funny but I keep all of my notes and things that I need to bring up on there. All my medical records, photos of symptoms, medication lists, everything.”

“ My phone, because it allows me to show progression of symptoms via pictures, physical results through a health care record app and has a list of current medications,” explained Julie Brison.

“ I’ve started making small videos on my worst days,” wrote Lexi Dennis. “That way I’m able to show my doctor how bad I get some days. I tend to minimize my own pain automatically when someone asks so I like to be able to show them exactly what a bad day for me looks like when I’m fully flared. I just open the video with date and time and then what’s hurting and what pain level.”

“ My phone so I can show my migraine log! Migraine Buddy is one of the best things I ever downloaded!!” Danni Dwyer told us.

9. Health Journal

chronic illness symptom journal

In addition to bringing in general lists of symptoms you’re experiencing and questions you have, keeping track of how you’re feeling day-to-day can also be a huge asset. Tracking your symptoms and pain level as well as other contributing factors such as quality of sleep, weather, food, drinks and your medications can help you and your doctor identify patterns that may inform future treatment.

“ I always brought my pain journal,” said Cindi Rosa. “I used it to track my symptoms, meds, side effects and relief, pain scale, questions, etc. in between appointments. That way when they ask how I’ve been feeling I had an accurate and detailed account of my days. I kept a section specifically for concerns and questions so I could find them easily and mark them off as we discussed them and I would make notes on that day’s entry pages to keep track of anything we talked about that I wanted to make note of. It was a very helpful tool to keep me focused and helped me relay what my pain typically is without having to recall from memory. With chronic pain, brain fog and memory recall become fuzzy; doctor appointments also always brought a lot of anxiety and fear, having my pain journal helped me stay focused and minimized my fear of forgetting something. Hugely helpful.”

Sheryl Clarke  wrote, “ My health journal. Everything is in there. We figure out triggers and such for my fibro. All my meds are listed and everything that’s going on that day including the weather.”

“ Notes, whether on your phone or a piece of paper,” recommended Sherrie Phelps-Snow. “Keep detailed notes on everything. A new symptom? New meds and you have a weird side effect? Any falls or near misses? Every single detail you (or a loved one/caregiver) can document is the most important way for you to be 100 percent involved in your own care.”

10. Headphones

red and black headphones

A pair of headphones allows you to listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks or even watch movies or TV shows on your phone while you’re waiting at the doctor’s office. Just make sure you don’t miss your name being called!

“ Headphones to listen to podcasts or audiobooks,” recommended Michelle Fogarty. “It’s always about the wait!!!”

Buy the headphones above for $35.99 from Amazon .

11. Current Medications in Their Original Bottles (If Possible)

prescription bottles

If you take medication, vitamins or supplements that can be easily transported, you may find it helpful to bring in everything you take in its original bottle/packaging for the doctor to look at. This can help them quickly determine how many pills/tablets you have left, how many refills remain, the dosage, etc., and it saves you from writing it all down! However, if you’re on medication that you can’t bring in because it needs to stay refrigerated, is administered at an infusion center, etc., then it is a good idea to write down all the pertinent information about the drug.

“ My medication bottles with the exact dosages and how many refills are left. It helps my doctor figure out what to leave alone and what I’m running low on. For my psychiatrist appointments, I bring notes about my mood cycles, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and PTSD symptoms to see if any of my meds need a change,” Simone Brodey explained.

“ My food/pain diary along with a bag full of all the meds I’m taking. I can’t always remember all the names and doses so I bring them all in their original containers,” said  Marisa Berdeja.

12. Face Mask

vogmask

For many folks with chronic illnesses, catching a cold or flu can be  way  more serious than it is for those who are generally healthy. Those of us who have a weakened immune system due to illness or medication are at an increased risk of catching something – but wearing a face mask can help reduce the risk. There are two main types of masks: face masks operate mostly as a barrier against airborne drops of fluid, while respirators act as a barrier in addition to filtering out up to 95 percent of airborne particles. For more information, check out the 10 face masks the chronic illness community recommends .

“ My filtered face mask!” wrote Sarah Anne Murphy. “If anyone around me is the least bit sick I will catch it. So I wear my mask to all appointments, especially check-ups with my primary care physician where people in the waiting room have all sorts of contagious illnesses. My mask is from Vogmask and it helps keep me healthy.”

Buy the face mask above for $33 from  Vogmask .

13. Notepad and Pen

legal notepad and pack of pens

If you like to take notes and jot down important information during your appointment, it can be helpful to have a scratch pad of paper and pen on hand. I like to include the date and which doctor I’m seeing at the top of each page so it’s easier to make sense of my notes later on!

“ Notebook and pen so I can take notes on what was said a) so I can re-read later to make sure I understood what was said and prepare questions for the next appointment and b) so that at future appointments when he/she says they never said that I can show them where I wrote it down,” Erika Clink told us.

“ Pen and paper,” said Emma Langner-Whyte. “It’s near impossible to remember all the doctor is telling you without writing it down.”

Buy the notepad above for $11.99 from Amazon . Buy the pens above (12-pack) for $11.99 from Amazon .

14. Comfortable, Loose Clothing

hanes gray women's sweatpants

When I go to the doctor, my top priority is usually comfort. Medical offices are often quite cold and clinical, so I like to wear warm, cozy clothing like sweatpants and a sweatshirt. It also may be helpful to consider the option that you will have to change into a gown or need to slip your shoes on and off to have your height and weight measured. I tend to wear loose articles of clothing and shoes that are easy to take on and off to make the process a bit easier and less energy-consuming.

Jenny Cerny  told us, “ I dress comfy in loose thermal sweatpants because I never know how long I will be in there or if they’re going to have the AC blasting. An extra jacket, comfy socks, and slip-on shoes – these help me take naps in any spot (usually the exam table) while I wait.”

Buy the sweatpants above starting at $9 from Amazon .

15. Audio Recorder

audio recorder

If you struggle with brain fog or aren’t able to write as fast as your doctor speaks, it may be helpful to bring an audio recorder to record your conversation. Just make sure to ask your doctor (or anyone else you plan to record) for their permission first.

Misty Levenick said, “[I bring]  a  notebook or audio recorder so I don’t forget.”

Buy the audio recorder above for $29.88 from Amazon .

What is a doctor bag learn more about this timeless accessory.

A reliable bag that carries all your essentials is a must in your handbag collection. When you have that go-to bag that’s a true multipurpose wonder for work, play, and travel, there’s no stopping you from conquering any occasion in style. And when it comes to practicality and lightweight appeal, there’s no better bag than the doctor bag.

With its roots in the medical field, the doctor bag (or gladstone bag) is a well-structured accessory designed for optimal accessibility. The style has evolved beyond the black bag associated with family physician house calls, becoming a staple for those outside the medical profession. Read on to discover what a doctor bag is — everything from the history to today’s contemporary uses of the ever-practical style.

What is a doctor bag?

A doctor bag is a sizable satchel with room to hold essentials and then some. It’s usually a compact leather bag in a boxy duffle-shaped style. This quintessential bag has a flat bottom so it can easily rest upright, a wide opening for clear visibility of the items inside, and a long middle section that’s almost tube-like in its length.

The bag has two large handles, so you can grab and go out the door with everything needed safely nestled inside. Everything from the durable leather to the well-defined shape, organized interior pockets, and sturdy clasp — points to its utilitarian origins of doctors needing to pack up equipment and medications for home visits.

Doctor Bag in Dolce Butterscotch

The history of the doctor bag

The doctor bag dates more than 100 years back to the Victorian era, when British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone was known to favor this model for its lightweight yet reliable style. That’s where the name “gladstone bag” comes from, since the politician used the bag as what was essentially a briefcase.

But it wasn’t long before doctors caught onto the appeal of the prime minister's go-to accessory. At the time, most doctors made house calls — it was common to have a family doctor provide care in the comfort of one’s own home. And because doctors require their medical supplies to carry out exams or administer medications, the practice needed to be portable. With its flat bottom and wide opening, the medical bag, or the gladstone bag, became the ideal solution for physicians on the road tending to sick patients.

Though house calls eventually faded into a thing of the past, as transportation became more accessible, the doctor bag popped up now and again for its namesake use. During both World War I and World War II, when caring for wounded soldiers on the battlefield, surgeons utilized the lightweight tote to administer life-saving care and medication. And the bag is still used by doctors in remote areas of developing nations where they might have a bag prepared when off the clock. These essentials could include a stethoscope, stitches, antibiotics, bandages, antiseptic, or other diagnostic tools and treatments.

Understandably with this rich history, antique doctor bags are collector’s items, but they’ve also been made new again for everyday essentials for those who work in professionals beyond the medical field. This fashion accessory borrows from the classic shape and style, but it’s more in line with the prime minister's original vision of a work bag or a weekender that can carry your overnight necessities .

SENREVE doctor bag along with accessories

What can you use a doctor bag for?

So how does a doctor bag fit into your everyday life, regardless of your ties to the medical community – or lack thereof? Here, we’ll give you some ideas for this timeless silhouette that’s truly stood the test of time.

  • -  Work bag . You don’t have to be a doctor on the go or the British prime minister to maximize the doctor bag’s work-life potential. With Senreve’s Doctor bag , made with high-quality Italian leather , you can fit up to a 12” laptop and still have room to spare. It features seven interior compartments and two exterior compartments for optimal organization, so you can ditch the boring briefcase and not sacrifice style for function.
  • - Weekender bag. When you have a spacious bag with a large main compartment, it’s also ideal for an overnight bag. It’s still roomy enough to carefully pack a change of clothes and your must-have toiletries. Just be sure to pack light for this lightweight bag , so it’s not bursting with unnecessary items. A weekend away puts your strategic packing skills to the test.
  • - Carry-on item for the plane. The doctor bag can be the ultimate carry-on item for the plane. Plus, if it’s compact enough, it has the potential to double as your personal item for low-stress flights. Remember, carry-on only travel shouldn’t increase your stress levels. Don’t let baggage weigh you down when you have the right bag to make quick trips a breeze.
  • - Day bag. The doctor shouldn’t be limited to work or travel; it can also act as your everyday bag as you run errands with the kids or meet up with friends for lunch. The beauty of the doctor bag is its durability and its versatility. That’s why it transitioned from being in the political landscape to the medical field with such ease.
  • - Go mini for a night out. And with doctor bags in a variety of sizes, you can opt for a miniature version of the beloved standard. Check out the mini version of our iconic Doctor bag , which measures 9.5 inches across. This sized-down sister to our bestselling Doctor Bag can be worn in a relaxed or boxy style, and it’s spacious enough to contain your basics for a date night out.

Revisit the past for the perfect modern accessory

There’s a reason why fashion is always looking to the past for inspiration. When a garment or accessory is timeless, we realize that we don’t have to reinvent that classic LBD or box clutch; we just have to bring the concept into the present. The doctor bag exemplifies Senreve’s belief in equipping the multifaceted and modern woman with everything she needs to execute a task in style. Explore our Doctor collection for a host of colors and materials to match your lifestyle.

Anti-war protesters in Australia clash with police outside a weapons convention

MELBOURNE, Australia — Anti-war protesters clashed with police on Wednesday outside a military arms convention in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Protesters hurled bottles, rocks and horse manure, a police statement said. They also sprayed officers with liquid irritants, some of which were identified as acid, police said.

Police retaliated with pepper spray, flash distraction devices and rubber bullets, which are designed to inflict pain without penetrating the skin.

At least 24 officers required medical treatment. Police arrested 39 protesters for offenses such as assault, arson and blocking roadways.

“Victoria Police is appalled at the behavior of some of the protesters,” the statement said, referring to the Victoria state force.

Around 1,800 police officers have been deployed to a Melbourne convention center where the Land Forces International Land Defense Exposition is taking place through Friday.

Some of the convention attendees also were assaulted, police said.

Protesters also threw rocks, horse manure and tomatoes at police horses and officers with shields and wearing riot gear. A police officer on horseback struck a protester with a riding crop and a line of police were seen forcing protesters away from the convention center.

Police said some protesters targeted the horses, but no animal sustained serious injury.

Roads have been closed and traffic was disrupted by the protests, organized by Students for Palestine and Disrupt Wars groups. The organizers hoped up to 25,000 protesters would turn out.

Police estimated 1,200 protesters had surrounded the convention center by noon.

Image: Protesters Descend On Land Forces International Defence Expo

Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said it was the state police force’s biggest planned deployment since Melbourne hosted the World Economic Forum in 2000 and backed his officers’ use of force. He said the protesters had planned for conflict.

“They come here to protest ... anti-war so presumably anti-violence,” Patton told reporters. “The only way I can describe them is a bunch of hypocrites.”

Students for Palestine national co-convenor Jasmine Duff blamed police for the protest violence.

“They used serious weapons on peace activists that should be banned for use on demonstrators, including pepper spray, which is classified as a chemical weapon,” Duff said in a statement.

“They hit us with batons, including hitting one man so hard he had to go to hospital, and they shot us with rubber bullets,” she added.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called on protesters to show respect for police.

“People have a right to protest peacefully, but you don’t say you’re opposed to defense equipment by throwing things at police,” Albanese told Seven Network television. “They’ve got a job to do and our police officers should be respected at all times.”

The organizer of the biennial convention, AMDA Foundation, said it would not comment on protester activity.

The gathering brings together arms industry figures from Australia, the United States, Asia and Europe. In 2022, the convention was held in the city of Brisbane, where protests were more subdued.
