Tanjung Puting: How to Arrange a Klotok Tour

Getting to Tanjung Puting

Flying to pangkalan bun.

The easiest way to get to Tanjung Puting is to fly to the airport at nearby Pangkalan Bun. From here, it’s a short taxi ride to Kumai, the nearest town to the national park. Current destinations from the airport include Jakarta, Semarang and Surabaya. However, as always, this is subject to change, so check the latest information before you plan your trip.

Getting to Tanjung Puting by boat

The only other simple way of getting to Tanjung Puting is to catch a boat from Java to Kumai, the nearest port to Tanjung Puting. There are a couple of Pelni boats per week between Semarang on Java and Kumai, but this ferry takes around 72 hours. There is also a weekly boat between Surabaya on Java and Kumai, which takes about 24 hours. This is obviously much longer than it takes to fly, but it is cheaper, too. However, domestic flights in Indonesia tend to be very reasonably priced, so it is probably not worth getting the boat.

While you may want to combine your trip to Tajung Puting with a visit to Balikpapan, it is not as easy as it might look on a map. Kalimantan is huge – it takes up most of Borneo, the third-largest island in the world – and most of it remains wild and undeveloped. It can take several days to travel overland by bus, or mean paying for several domestic flights.

From Pangkalan Bun/Kumai to Tanjung Puting

Once you get to Pangkalan Bun or Kumai, you cannot just walk into the park if you’re travelling independently. First, if you’re flying into Pangkalan Bun, you are requested to register at the police station. In Kumai, you will have to register at the park headquarters. Both places will require photocopies of your passport and visa.

This is one reason why it’s easier to visit Tanjung Puting as part of a tour, although it’s perfectly possible to do it independently – it just requires a bit more effort.

How to Arrange a Klotok Riverboat Tour

The most popular way to experience Tanjung Puting is with a cruise on a klotok riverboat. Klotoks have been in use for hundreds of years and are a traditional wooden boat used to navigate Indonesian rivers. Klotok cruises can easily be arranged in Kumai. They start from around Rp 2,000,000 per person.

The classic klotok cruise lasts for three days and two nights, and will see you sleeping and eating on the boat. You will cruise up the river, stopping at feeding stations where animals come to eat. You’ll also make stops at rehabilitation centres and research centres. This is a good way to experience the park, as the boats do not disturb the animals and you can watch them going about their business on the riverbanks.

You are pretty much guaranteed to see orangutans on a cruise in Tanjung Puting. Other animals you can hope to spot include proboscis monkeys, with huge noses and even bigger bellies; two species of crocodile; and sun bears, among many others. Cruising up the river on a wooden boat for days at a time is also very romantic and feels like a great adventure.

Where to Stay When You’re Not on a Cruise

Kumai and Pangkalan Bun both have several backpacker lodges where you can stay either side of your trip, while Pangkalan Bun also has a handful of upmarket hotels, such as the Grand Kecubung Hotel . If you want to stay inside the park itself, the best option is Rimba Ecolodge , which offers comfortable accommodation with a fantastic location right in the rainforest.

Treat the Animals with Respect

Orangutans are beautiful creatures, and their eerie similarity to humans and, sadly, increasing rarity, make them very special. Furthermore, many of them are unafraid of humans and will walk very close to you, particularly at feeding stations. For these reasons it can be tempting to try to approach or touch them – don’t.

Orangutans are smaller than humans, but many times more powerful than us. They are also unpredictable, even if they are being rehabilitated or have been raised in captivity. Treat them with respect and caution and it’s better for both them and you. The same goes for the myriad other wild animals in the park. You wouldn’t try to pat a gharial crocodile – apply the same logic to the orangutans.

Final Thoughts

Tanjung Puting is a national park in Kalimantan, one of Indonesia’s wildest and most beautiful provinces. It is one of the best places in the world to see orangutans in the wild. It’s relatively easy to reach from elsewhere in Indonesia with a flight to Pangkalan Bun. The classic way to experience the park is with a multi-day river cruise on a traditional klotok riverboat. Along the way, you will spot animals form the riverbanks and stop off at feeding stations and research centres, where you can really see orangutans up close.

The Heat of the Moment Tour 2024

Asia is absolutely delighted to announce The Heat of The Moment Tour, headlined by Asia and also featuring Focus, Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash and Curved Air and MC’d by artist Roger Dean.

The tour will commence on 3rd July 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original Asia member, Geoff Downes (Buggles, Asia, Yes).

Asia was the biggest selling album of 1982, number 1 on Billboard for 9 weeks and pioneers of the MTV era! Downes’ brand new iteration of Asia first began to evolve last Summer, at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist, John Wetton (King Crimson, Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, UK, Asia, John Wetton Band, Icon). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell (It Bites, Frost*, Lonely Robot, Kino, John Wetton Band, Icon) and new-comer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton’s life by performing some of the classic Asia hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

“ And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage. The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling.”

Downes’ new-look Asia will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati (UK, Southern Sons, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth) on drums.

Downes continues, “With the addition of Virgil Donati & John Mitchell, two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W. Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the Asia songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years.”

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts, Focus, Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash and Curved Air. All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

Focus will be releasing a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs van Leer, featuring original 1970’s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden, plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 70’s rock music behemoth Wishbone Ash, best known for such classic albums as  Argus  and  Pilgrimage .

Formed in 1970, Curved Air are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band’s most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski.

Each performance on the tour will be MC’d by legendary artist Roger Dean. For so many, Dean’s artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes, “I am convinced that John (Wetton’s) spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure.  After all, it is the Year of the Dragon – just as it was in 1982, when we released our first Asia album. It’s as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends – bring it on!”

South Korean singer Youngjae of K-pop boyband GOT7 has announced his upcoming 2024 ‘Once in a Dream’ Asia tour, featuring concerts in Thailand, Japan and more.

GOT7’s Youngjae announced his 2024 ‘Once in a Dream’ Asia tour on July 1. The tour will include six shows across four cities in August and September 2024, including Thailand, Japan and more.

I’ll kick off on August 17 at the Katsushika Symphony Hills Mozart Hall in Tokyo, Japan, followed by two shows in Bangkok, Thailand in the same month. Meanwhile, the singer will bring his tour to Hong Kong and Seoul in September.

Youngjae has yet to announced the ticketing details for the concerts on his upcoming ‘Once in a Dream’ Asia tour. Keep tabs on this page for the latest updates.

Youngjae’s 2024 ‘Once in a Dream’ Asia tour will be his second of the year, following the ‘Inside Out’ tour that ran from February to March . That trek featured shows in Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand and more.

At least 3 tour bus drivers found without licence as Malaysia tightens checks after Genting accident

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized two tour buses after their drivers were found to have no driving licences as at 9.30am on July 2.

JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said the two tour buses were temporarily seized during a crackdown on tour bus companies that began on July 2.

“The bus companies were contacted and told to send replacement drivers before they were allowed to leave at about 9.30am,” he said, adding that the companies would be issued summonses.

Mr Muhammad Kifli added that a tour bus driver, in his 30s, was also detained after failing a drug test.

A check on the drivers of a further 16 tour buses and five express buses came back negative for drug use.

Some 70 officers from the JPJ, police, National Anti-drug Agency and Tourism Ministry were involved in the joint operation, which took place from 6am till 12pm on July 2.

Mr Muhammad Kifli also said that Johor JPJ officers had temporarily detained a tour bus entering Malaysia after it was found that the Singaporean driver did not possess a licence.

The crackdown on tour bus companies may be extended beyond July 31, said Mr Muhammad Kifli.

“If we are still not satisfied with the situation, the operations will carry on till a directive is issued by the (transport) minister,” he told reporters at the JPJ Enforcement Centre in Gombak, Selangor.

On July 1, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced a major crackdown on tour bus and van operators following a fatal accident involving a tour bus.

On June 29, a tour bus carrying 21 people overturned while descending from Genting Highlands, killing two Chinese tourists .

Initial investigations revealed that the 32-year-old bus driver had 27 previous traffic summonses for various offences and did not have a licence.

The company was found to be operating without a permit for four months.

The driver has since been remanded for further investigations.

Mr Loke said he had instructed the Land Public Transport Agency to take stern action against the company, including suspension and revocation of its operating licence, if it is found to have violated regulations. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
