As a former local who now live in NYC, it was great coming back home and going on this tour with The Legend Matteo. As a great guide he walked us through how to operate and stay safe on the boats. Overall a great experience front to back i HIGHLY recommend this to any tourists or locals!

The rainforest is super beautiful and extremely unique, an absolute must to see. We originally wanted to go on our own, but so glad we decided to use the tour. The roads are very hard to navigate, and change all the time depending on the weather and the maintenance. Our tour guides Luis and Ruben grew up in the area, were very knowledgeable and so much fun!! it really adds to the visit to learn more about the culture in the history as well as the unique aspects of this rainforest. Oh well worth it 🙂

this really rocked, we did the early 10am tour last Friday and it was amazing Luz our Tour agent at the hotel and Janice our Jetski agent receptionist were the best! 90 min of pure adrenaline

We offer different paths from easy to more adventurous and we can make the tour work for visitors of any age. If you love nature, this is a must-do in Puerto Rico. 

The Details:

What's included.

– 3 hour tour off the beaten path – A hike of 30-40 minutes to the first of two water pools. – 2 beautiful water pools with multiple waterfalls – Rope Swings – Multiple cliff jumps up to 32ft – A giant natural water slide as main attraction (if the water level allows it) – Fun and relaxation guaranteed – We will take pictures of everyone – One bottle of water each

Requirements:

– 2 people minimum – weight limit 250lbs for your safety unless you are physically fit – must be PHYSICALLY FIT to hike, climb hills and smaller rocks without help. If you simply want to enjoy the rain forest, water pools and relax, you are very welcome to skip the jumps and slides but you still need to be comfortable hiking. The tour is as relaxing or thrilling as you want it to be. – No pregnant woman, people with back- or heart problems or anyone who is not physically fit (body weight over 250lbs or out of shape) or afraid of water should participate in this tour.

What to bring:

– Shoes with good grip such as sneakers or hiking shoes. No Flip-flops please. – Snacks (and medication if needed). – Make sure to have breakfast before we meet! – Towel and change of clothes, which you can leave in the car for after the tour.

Our main tour starts daily at 8am Mo – Fr and 7:30am on weekends. The afternoon tour starts at 2:30pm.

We meet at CVS Pharmacy in Fajardo if you have a rental car. Please be there early as we are leaving on time to start the tour and can’t wait for late shows!

The staff was very friendly. The experience was enjoyable for the whole family. They worked with the children on board to help teach them about sailing and snorkeling.

We have done many snorkeling tour in various places, this tour tops our list. Most “sailing” tours only go to the snorkeling site with the engine running. This tour sailed to and from the beach. We snorkeled at two places and had a two-hour stay on a great beach. Lunch was great and we had plenty to enjoy. I highly recommend Fun Cat Catamaran if you are in Puerto Rico.

We have had a great trip to Puerto Rico and by far, the best thing we’ve done is spent a day on the Fun Cat Catamaran with Capt. Jim and his crew. They were all outstanding!!! The ship was beautiful. The equipment was top notch. The lunch buffet, snacks, and drinks were all delicious. The Pina Coladas were awesome!!! And all of the places we stopped were amazing. Do this tour – you will not be sorry!!!

What a wonderful day we had mini boating and snorkeling the conditions were perfect on our day crystal clear waters for snorkeling and nice calm seas. Being able to drive your own boat was great . The staff and the guides were awesome we would highly recommend this tour and company

Everything was well organized and most importantly FUN! Our tour guides were awesome, friendly and knowledgeable. My kids (12,9) had a blast! Would definitely do it again.

I took Lonely Planet’s suggestion of a surfing lesson from Brian and his crew at Surfing Puerto Rico. Such an amazing experience that now I’m hooked and looking for lessons back home in Maryland. Brian and his super professional and safe team helped me learn the ins-and-outs and get a bunch of stand-up rides. I’m 55 and had never surfed before. Would do it again in a minute!

Brian is an excellent teacher and we had a great time. We went with my 73 yo father, my 15 and 13 year old sons, my brother and his 11 year old son. All 3 generations got up a time or two and road a wave in. 🙂

I went for the 3-hour surfing lesson101 and it was amazing for someone who has no idea about surfing whatsoever!! Brian was an amazing instructor overall!! Wanted to go for the 3 days lesson but didn’t have that time. I would definitely come back if I ever have that chance. Highly recommend it!

They give you the full experience from snorkeling with turtles, to kayaking and then relaxing on the beautiful Flamenco Beach and eating great food.

The bioluminescent were sparkling in the bay and even brighter in the mangroves were we kayaked. We were the only ones in the bay for most of the tour. Wilmington Water Tours can continue operations from Riverwalk dock, judge rules

Wilmington Water Tours will be allowed to continue operating from a dock along the Cape Fear River after a judge's ruling Wednesday.

Dozens of community members gathered at the New Hanover County Courthouse Wednesday for a pivotal hearing central to a lawsuit poised to effect the business' operations.

Wilmington Water Tours has been operating from a dock on the river for 15 years, said Doug Springer, co-founder of the company. A lawsuit filed by the Riverwalk Condominiums of Wilmington Unit Owners Association Inc. threatened to alter that reality.

Martin Gallan of Gallan Holdings LLC, the defendant in the lawsuit, owns three condo units and eight Riverwalk boat slips, according to Wednesday's hearing. Springer leases two dock slips from Gallan and owns one condo unit from which he operates his business.

A third dock slip is leased from Gallan by Rob Pickett of Picket Investments LLC, the owner of an 85-foot yacht, according to the hearing. Pickett's boat is no longer docked at the Riverwalk slip.

In September 2023, the Riverwalk Condominiums of Wilmington Unit Owners Association requested the removal of boats from the community's dock, citing a violation of Homeowners Association (HOA) rules regarding the leasing of dock slips, said Thomas Babel, the attorney representing the HOA, at Wednesday's hearing.

Last month, the New Hanover County Superior Court ruled in favor of the HOA, ordering Gallan to remove the boats from the dock, Babel said. Gray Wilson, an attorney representing Gallan Holdings LLC, appealed this ruling on June 21, 2024.

The initial lawsuit cites a Coastal Area Management Act (CAMA) permit that has since expired, said Tracie Yarborough, an attorney representing Wilmington Water Tours.

"The HOA's position is that even though the permit has expired ... the conditions of that permit stay as long as the project exists," Yarborough said, referring to the Riverwalk dock. "CAMA has not responded yet."

Yarborough said it is her and Springer's understanding that the purpose of the CAMA permit was to allow public access to the Riverwalk.

"Obviously his business is allowing that; he's brought in over 800,000 people to the Riverwalk," Yarborough said.

Superior Court Judge Jessica Locklear presided over Wednesday's hearing and suspended the existing order as it pertains to Wilmington Water Tours, allowing for the business to operate from the docks until the case is heard by the Court of Appeals.

In addition, Locklear ordered the defendant to post a $50,000 surety bond and mandated court appearance if violation outside of the operation of Wilmington Water Tours occurs. In the event of a violation, Locklear also recommended a fine of $5,000 per violation date.

Both Wilson and Yarborough said they were pleased by the court's decision.

"I think the biggest thing we want to say is we're pleased that Wilmington Water Tours is staying in business," Yarborough said. "That was our goal."

The outpouring of community support at the courthouse was a testament to Wilmington Water Tours' involvement in the Port City's community, Springer said.

"When we built the business, we said we didn't want to be a tourist-based business, we wanted to be a part of the community," Springer said. "That's what we try to do every day."

Several residents present at the courthouse spoke about the benefits the company has brought to both their lives and the greater Wilmington community.

"He gets people involved in other community activities," Sally Gibbons said of Springer, adding that she has known Springer for approximately 15 years. "Everybody loves them."

Erin Cunnane, one of the first people to participate in a tour 15 years ago, after the boat became handicap accessible, said Springer, his wife, and other company employees are like family to her.

"The Wilmington Water Tours boat (has been) a happy spot for me," Cunnane said. "It has changed my life a lot and has made me more confident to be able to do things that I thought I would never achieve."

Many visitors come to Costa Rica looking for adventure and adrenaline, ready to explore and venture into the wild. Driven by this bold spirit, many end up entering different national parks and biological reserves through unauthorized areas. Often, tourists book tours that seem promising, thrilling, and extremely fun. However, some of these tours involve breaking rules and pose considerable risks that are unknown to many. Many people hike and visit sites without realizing they are entering restricted areas.

According to the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), it is impossible to determine how many people do so because tracking them all is not feasible. However, between June 22 and 23 alone, authorities detected 53 unauthorized visitors. Recently, that number has averaged over 1,500.

According to Yeimy Cedeño, head of Prevention, Protection, and Control of SINAC, the boundaries of protected wildlife areas are public. Therefore, before hiring a tour, it is recommended to verify the planned route. “People can access the SNIT website at snitcr.go.cr to visualize the limits of protected wild areas. They can make inquiries to determine if they are entering a protected area,” she said.

Additionally, SINAC recommends verifying if the tour company is formal, has the necessary insurance and policies, is registered with the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, and if its guides are certified. “If the tour is to the top of a volcano, there is no way it is legal. The high risk prevents authorized access to the top of a volcano,” she added.

The sites where most of these tours take place include the Sucio River, also known as Cañón del Dorado; Cacho Negro; Bajo de la Hondura; Calle Zurquí; and Vara Blanca.

The Red Cross explained that on many occasions, rescue operations must be carried out. At the end of June, there were 69 mountain rescues. This work puts considerable pressure on their operational capacity because it requires highly specialized personnel and necessitates the transfer of Red Cross members from various parts of the country, reducing their ability to respond to other emergencies.

SINAC has proposed a bill, currently in the legislative process, to increase the fines for those who engage in these illegal activities, which put both the participants’ lives and the rescue corps at risk.

Man Sentenced For Tampering And Vandalism At Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

          U.S. Attorney Mark Totten issued the following statement: “Mr. Howard had a policy dispute with the National Park Service over whether to dredge the Platte River.  Reasonable people can disagree on the best course of action, but Congress gave NPS the power to decide. While Mr. Howard had the right to disagree and advocate for his position, he did not have the right to take the law into his own hands and force his favored result. Doing so was a misdemeanor, and this sentence holds Mr. Howard accountable for his offense.”

          Howard was previously convicted at trial in February 2024 of two federal misdemeanors for tampering and vandalism at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in connection with an August 15, 2022, diversion of the Platte River.  In August 2022, National Park Service law enforcement officers investigated reports of a diversion of the Platte River near its mouth where it meets Lake Michigan.  Evidence at trial showed that on August 15, 2022, Howard used a shovel to dig sediment and rocks from the river basin and stacked large rocks on a dam to divert the river’s natural water flow toward a newly created channel out to Lake Michigan, contrary to a decision by the National Park Service to let the river follow its natural course.

          The National Park Service expended significant resources by deploying NPS personnel and Coast Guard resources to evaluate the impact on the National Lakeshore, including on the Platte River, adjoining habitats, and affected wildlife.  The Platte River area is home to protected wetlands, coastal dunes, plants, and wildlife.  Several endangered animal species and threatened plant species make the Platte River area their home, including the piping plover, a small migratory bird that nests along the sand and shore of Lake Michigan, and Pitcher’s thistle, a native thistle that grows along the sand dunes of Lake Michigan.  Due to the significant decrease in—and the partial absence of—water levels after the diversion, as well as changes to the flow and speed of the river, NPS staff observed wetland vegetation drying and ultimately dying within and along the river.  Overall, the change in water levels caused by the diversion drained the wetlands and negatively impacted many plants and aquatic invertebrates in the process.  Given the volume and power of water moving through the diversion, and after careful consideration of impacts to affected ecosystems and wildlife, NPS concluded that major remediation to restore the area to its natural state was not advisable because the remediation would involve substantial disturbance to the fragile ecosystems of the area.  NPS continues to monitor and assess the damage and situation.

          The diversion also created an unauthorized access for large boats to enter Platte Bay.  Within days, the natural power of the water and the dam caused the new channel to reach approximately 200 feet wide.  The following aerial photograph on the left, taken in May of 2022, shows the natural flow of the Platte River running parallel to Lake Michigan. The photograph on the right taken by the U.S. Coast Guard shows the same area approximately three days after the diversion, with the channel emptying directly into Lake Michigan.

          “Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was created in 1970 to preserve and protect this amazing place,” said Superintendent Scott Tucker.   “The National Park Service appreciates the support of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in enforcing the laws that help protect this place for future generations.”

          The National Park Service investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney Lauren F. Biksacky prosecuted it on behalf of the United States.
