Where is the Star of Honolulu Located?

Thinking about the Star of Honolulu cruise ? Let’s talk about where it is. It’s at Pier 8 in the Aloha Tower Marketplace, and the address is 1 Aloha Tower Drive in Honolulu.

It’s a quick 15-minute drive from Waikiki, so it’s not too far from where lots of tourists stay. But, it’s not close enough to walk from Waikiki, so you’ll need to plan how to get there.

You can drive yourself or arrange a ride. If you drive, remember you’ll need to pay for parking. And here’s a tip: get there about 45 minutes early, especially for dinner cruises, which means checking in by 4:45 PM. That way, you’re all set and not rushing at the last minute.

Driving Yourself?

There are pay parking lots nearby . We parked at the Irwin parking lot which is the closest to the Star of Honolulu at Pier 8. But, it also shares the parking lot with a luau, so it fills up quickly.

First Impressions

When we first got to the Star of Honolulu cruise , it was pretty neat. We noticed it was mostly older folks and honeymooners on board. Since it was the off-season, there weren’t as many families around. Check current rates and availability .

Before we even got on the ship, there was this cool hula show right on the dock. It was a fun, quick performance that got everyone excited. At 4:45 p.m., they started inviting guests to board the ship.

The whole vibe was welcoming, and it was awesome to start the cruise experience with some traditional Hawaiian dancing. It definitely set the mood for a great evening ahead!

Entertainment Value

On the Star of Honolulu Cruise, the entertainment really adds to the experience, but it can vary depending on where you’re seated.

We were on the Three Star Sunset Dinner & Show Cruise , and there was this awesome jazz singer during dinner. She sang lots of different songs and even took requests from us. It was cool hearing jazzy versions of some classic hits!

star of honolulu cruise review

After the cruise ended, we got to watch the “65 Years of Aloha” show. It lasted about 15 minutes and was like a mini luau. There was hula dancing, Tahitian dancing, and even Maori dancing from New Zealand.

The dancers were not just on stage; they were all around us, so no matter where you sat, you had a great view.

The best part? The show wrapped up with a dance party. They played “YMCA,” and almost everyone got up to dance. It was so much fun seeing everyone just let loose and enjoy themselves.

If you’re into music, dancing, and a good time, this cruise has got you covered!

Food & Drink Experience

On the Star of Honolulu Cruise, you’ve got a bunch of dining options, each with its own cool features. Let’s break it down:

star of honolulu cruise review

Pacific Star Sunset Buffet & Show Cruise

This one’s great for families. It’s more affordable and includes a welcome Mai Tai and a tasty Pacific Rim dinner buffet. Think roast beef carving station and a fun Polynesian show.

Star Sunset Dinner & Show Cruise

Here, you get a Signature Mai Tai and a 3-course meal with crab, steak, and BBQ chicken, plus the “65 Years of Aloha” show. Sounds pretty delicious!

Three Star Sunset Dinner & Show Cruise

We tried this one and loved it! You get a 5-course dinner with lobster and steak, super premium drinks, and live entertainment, including jazz during dinner. Fancy and fun!

Nova Five Star Sunset Dinner & Show Cruise

This is the top-tier option. You dine on the top deck with amazing views, enjoy a “champagne” toast, and get a 5-course lobster and beef dinner. Plus, there’s jazz music.

They’re cool about special diets too. If you’re vegan or have other dietary needs, just let them know 24 hours in advance, and they’ll sort you out.

And the drinks? There are tropical cocktails like Blue Hawaii, Lava Flow, and their Signature Mai Tai, plus other cocktails, wine, beer, and soft drinks.

So, whatever your taste or budget, there’s something for everyone. And the quality of the food and drinks? Top-notch! It’s a great mix of delicious eats and cool Hawaiian vibes.

Things to Know Before Booking

Before you book the Star of Honolulu Dinner Cruise , here’s what you need to know. If you’re staying in Waikiki, you can get a ride to the cruise and back for a small fee. It’s super handy!

This cruise is the only one in Hawaii that’s fully set up for people with disabilities. It’s got ramps and elevators, so everyone can join in the fun.

Image of Marcie Cheung of Hawaii Travel Spot on the Star of Honolulu cruise at sunset.

For dinner cruises, dress nicely but comfortably. Think resort style, but leave the shorts and flip-flops at home.

And, they’ve got bathrooms on the ship, even one with a changing table for little ones. Kids under two who sit on a parent’s lap are free.

If your plans change, you can cancel or change your booking for free up to 24 hours before the cruise. But if you cancel within 24 hours or don’t show up, you’ll have to pay the full price.

Celebrating something special? They’ve got cakes, wine, and more to make your cruise extra special.

They’ve got something fun for every holiday, like New Year’s Eve or the 4th of July. Who doesn’t enjoy a themed cruise?

After the ship leaves, you can smoke outside on the fourth deck. And don’t forget to bring your ID if you want a drink – you need to be 21 or older.

The ship has four decks and a 60-foot-high observation deck for amazing views. And if you get seasick, they offer free herbal ginger capsules to help settle your stomach.

So, whether it’s a special day or just a fun outing, the Star of Honolulu has lots to offer!

Overall Score: 8/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Star of Honolulu Sunset Dinner Cruise with Polynesian Show & Live Entertainment

Overall rating.

4.71 / 5

Star of Honolulu sunset buffet cruise

Enjoyed the cruise and seeing Waikīkī from the sea The buffet dinner was quite nice The show was okay but not great. It wasn’t really a show. It was dancers spread over the one deck. The dancers themselves were good but wasn’t a show. The waiters had to dance but most were not great. Armondo was good. The lady singing was terrible. The waiters service was good. The Mai Tai’s were good. Everyone was friendly. If I did cruise again would do the deck 3 menu and show.

Everything was great really had a good time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The best birthday present!!

The best birthday present my husband has ever received we would happily do this cruise again and have highly recommended it to all of our friends and family who are still in Hawaii for our Sons wedding. The experience was fantastic the staff were fantastic at their job. The show was an absolute awesome experience The food was delicious, my husband was very shocked at the variety and was enjoying it that much he wanted more. Only downside was feeling overly cramped in small seating space, besides that if we ever get back to Hawaii we would book this every day.

Best dinner cruise in Honolulu

This dinner cruise was so much fun. The food was great. The staff was nice, funny, and accommodating to our needs.

OK Experience

There were six of us for the Deluxe 3-Star selection. My daughter-in-law got motion sick from the swaying of the boat, so I suggest taking Dramamine before boarding. The "champagne" toast was non-alcoholic. Food was ok but not worth the price to upgrade. Drinks were not very good. Music during the cruise was too loud and mostly show-tunes, not Hawaiian songs. Michael - our server - was quite good. Dancers and singers were enthusiastic. Views were lovely.

Very highly recommended. Wonderful experience. Delicious food. Friendly staff!

Great experience!

Food and service were great! Watching the sunset out on the water was amazing. Easy Uber ride to/from our hotel in Waikiki. Would definitely recommend and do again!

Great night out

The whole night was fun and a memorable experience. The food was good, entertainment was excellent and staff very courteous and accommodating. We would highly recommend this Sunset Dinner Cruise on a Friday night to see the fireworks.

Sunset dinner cruise.

Highlight was the Polynesian show. Food was ok, deserts were good. Complimentary drinks were average. Purchased drinks were pricey. Overall, did not get to see much of a sunset by being busy with the food and the show. It felt more like sitting in a restaurant since the boat was moving slow and sturdy unless you come out to grab the food.

Wonderful Dinner Cruise

We had the best time with the Star of Honolulu. The captain was very welcoming, and the staff was first rate. Our restaurant wait person Tina, was very prompt in meeting our needs. She was friendly and efficient. The entertainment was excellent, and the food was tasty and plentiful. We sat next to a couple of other travelers and thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. I would recommend this cruise to everyone!

34 yr Anniversary Sunset Dinner Cruise, WOW!

Very customer focused from check-in through the dinner service & when we debarked. Food was very tasty & plentiful! Would do it again especially on a Fri night when the Hilton Hotel had a wonderful fireworks display.

Star of Honolulu sunset dinner cruise

Excellent service food was great the staff super friendly the show was amazing my whole family and I had excellent time I will give 5 ⭐️ to veltra and the star of Honolulu for the amazing night see you soon

A must try!

Great fun for the whole family! Older kids enjoy this too.

A Relaxing Evening

If you want to take a break from the walking, shopping, and hotel hustle and bustle around Waikiki I suggest a sunset dinner cruise on the Star of Honolulu. The five star experience on the top deck Nova Room is a relaxing evening filled with well-made bar drinks, superior cuisine, piano and mood music, and sparkling views of coastal O'ahu. The Nova Room experience is a step above the normal pricing for the cruise, but is a good value for all you receive. I especially enjoyed the time to talk and relax with my wife, to enjoy the coastal scenery, and to savor the various courses of the dinner as described in the promotional materials. The service was excellent throughout the evening and the whole experience exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend the Nova Room experience on the forth deck of the Star of Honolulu.

Pretty Scenary

Delish dinner with great view points out your window the whole night!

Lovely cruise with wonderful sunset and waikiki beach view!

This was a fun island activity and a romantic dinner for two. Other passengers also looked to be having a great time. The best part of the cruise was the opportunity to see the waikiki beach from the water. The weather cooperated and we also had a beautiful sunset. All of the food was picture perfect and tasty but smaller portions than I expected and it was certainly the smallest maine lobster I have ever seen. The upstairs on the ship was set up like a very nice restaurant, white tablecloths and the wait staff were in black suits - very fancy. The wait staff was polite and as professional as could be but as far as I could tell there was only one waiter for the entire top section this made getting drinks a bit slow. The jazz music was mostly just piano and was too loud for the room the piano had a microphone set up and it seems like it could have been turned down a notch. I shouldn't have to strain to hear the person I'm eating with who it just across the table, the couple next to us made the same comment about the volume. The singer on the other hand was wonderful and had a beautiful voice. My expectation was there would be some mellow jazz playing while we were eating, I suppose the singer had to provide some entertainment on one of the other decks while the piano played upstairs. All in all an okay experience but the photo ads and descriptions are playing it up a bit. Again best part of the voyage was the view.

Beautiful Sunset!

Our evening on the Star of Honolulu was an excellent experience! Ample parking was easy and accessible with 2 lots within walking distance. The check-in process was a breeze, make sure your voucher is ready. Waiting to board we were entertained with local dancers and music. Time to board! We were sorted by class and our trip to the top deck was a nice elevator ride up. We were seated at a nice intimate table with large window perfect for viewing. First on the table was a charcuterie board with tasty cheeses, meats and fruit. Don’t forget the champagne! As the cruise got underway were able to chat with the guests seated next to us. The dancers and singers provided more entertainment as we departed. The music throughout the night was relaxing. On our journey to view the sunset in front of Diamon Head we encountered some whales! A happy surprise. The lobster course was delicious. We were treated to a sorbet course in the middle of our dining experience which was tasty. The food was flavorful and appetizing. Delicious! During the trip you are able to take many great pictures and they even have a photographer on standby. The sunset was amazing as well as the views from the Waikiki area. The journey home was more intimate and with the lowered light and live jazz music. Dancing is also encouraged. The cheesecake dessert did not disappoint. The journey was full of memories and was the perfect end to an amazing time in Hawaii. Overall this cruise is very recommended to anyone looking for memories, delicious food and a wonderful evening.

Fun Celebration Evening

Beautful sunset view from the top deck; great food and entertainment. The best part by far was the Jazz Ensemble! At the end, the cast and servers did an amazing ‘hula hula’ version of YMCA. The group loved it.

Great Experience

The upper deck was great for taking pictures. We started off with a charcuterie board that had tasty cheeses and fruit. The second course included lobster over a beet salad with a nice puree. My only reservation was the meat which was overcooked in my opinion, but to be fair, I'm sure many people prefer a medium-well filet. Taking pictures in between courses was a huge plus and didn't make us feel confined to the table. Overall, I would recommend this cruise to anyone looking for a good time.

Ok experience

Nice environment and friendly staff. Show was brief and nothing like it has been advertised for. Food in multiple varieties but so crowded and needs to be more organized

Dinner cruise ship

It was interesting to say, enjoyed the environment and the food. Was with my girlfriend and she loved it. Was at a table on the edge to the starboard side. What topped it all was doing it on the night of the fireworks! Would do again.

Magical Experience

What an amazing time! We got picked up a minute away from our hotel and the bus driver even shared some Oahu history during the ride! We opted for the five star dinner and it was incredible. We felt like VIPs! Incredible food, the BEST steak I have ever had and delicious champagne. Live Jazz music on our deck and stunning views. Definitely going to do it again next time we visit! I recommend bringing a jacket as it can get pretty windy on the outside deck and indoors is air-conditioned.

A Dinner Cruise in Paradise

Hello everybody, Let me share our experience (honeymooners) on the 5 Stars Course of that Dinner Cruise with you. In terms of hospitality, starting from the pick-up crew, to the captains and waitress (many thanks to lovely Jordan), it was just great. We had an super easy pick up with a bus, where everyone received a sticker depending on the course they’ve booked and then took around 15-30 minutes to get the harbor. Everyone had a warm welcome with local dance and music in front of the boat while boarding. Once we have taken our seats, we were welcomed with nice champagne and some cheese and ham plate with crackers. In terms of the food in that day, it was simply amazing and tasty. ESPECIALLY the served meat. Whoever cooked that: genius! Anyhow, besides food and drinks we got the chance to explore the boat between the food breaks. We had an amazing view on Waikiki/Diamond Head/other boats, even though it was cloudy. It was still very enjoyable. And also we had the great luck to see whales! That was the cherry on top. Well, besides all of that going on, we had live entertainment (pianist, some Saxophon and some singer - all just awesome). They’ll also take a picture of you, so for 30$ you can purchase them. In the end, everyone with some special occasion was asked to dance in the middle of the room, which was pretty romantic. Overall, it was really worth it. Minus points for: - photo only available as data file for another 20$ (why?!) - pretty chilly inside the boat (but guess this depends on the season) Overall, just great! Would love to board once more in the future. Thanks everyone!

The event began on time with a glass of champagne. I must admit that the food was better than expected. The staff waited to serve each course until we were at the table, as we often went out to take air between courses and take pictures. Would recommend to anyone looking for a short dinner cruise with romantic/relaxing ambiance.

NOVA FIVE STAR, MORE LIKE TEN STARS!

[Reviewed by HawaiiActivities.com Staff] Nova Five Star package should be renamed to, 'Ten Star.' The reason being this package was over the top elegant, professional, and accommodating. Each table had their own charcuterie board, which was perfect snack to get the evening started. The meal was served in an order that was so unique. I had never had sorbet in the middle of a meal, and I'm still dreaming of the texture and flavor. The presentation/ quality of food was very impressive. Each course amazed me more and more! The music throughout the meal was so relaxing, and set the mood for a delightful evening. If you are looking for an intimate evening with your loved one, this is the package for you! Mahalo to SOH for going the extra mile to create a magical space!

Beautiful ambiance and delicious meal!

[Reviewed by HawaiiActivities.com Staff] We did the dinner cruise with the Nova Five Star on the 4th deck of the boat and it was a treat and we really had a great time. Their table set up at the Super Nova Room was so beautiful, clean, so organized, and elegant! We had our own private table seating next to the window and we enjoyed the night view even without having to explore the boat. We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious dinner. The steak was exceptionally tender, and the fresh fruit sorbet was our favorite. The servers provided excellent service as well, and the entertainment complemented the rainy weather, creating a more relaxing atmosphere. Anyone looking for a romantic celebration on Valentine's Day, Anniversary, or any special occasion, the NOVA Five Star aboard the Star of Honolulu is an ideal choice. For those seeking for a smaller crowd and more privacy, I would recommend booking the Nova Five Star cruise on Thursdays as it is not as busy as on the weekends.

Delish food, fun times and gorgeous views! Worth it!

Food and service was good. Views were outstanding. Nice entertainment.

Missed the Boat

Sadly due to traffic I missed the boat by a minute I had checked how long it would take to get there when planning my leave time and I was quoted 45 every time when I was staying only 25 miles away however traffic was crazy and it ended up being an hour and a half drive we pulled into parking at exactly 1745 and the boat was pulling out as I was running to it. Gave a rating of Good because the boat left exactly on time and if I had been on board that would have been great

Great Views of The Gorgeous Waikiki

What an evening to celebrate an anniversary! Fabulous food and performers.

Star of Honolulu cruise – 5-Star dining Review

star new

Hawaii Aloha Travel > Blog > Star of Honolulu cruise – 5-Star dining Review

Yaling and I enjoyed joining the Star of Honolulu for their 7-course French-style dining experience this week. Let me start off by saying that this dinner cruise is by no means for the traveler on a budget. We want to recommend this cruise to those looking for a high-end dining experience while in Waikiki because this French-style dinner runs $189 per person, which is as expensive as it gets here in Honolulu. Alan Wong’s and Chef Munro have comparable prices to Star of Honolulu, and so I was really curious to see what type of ambiance and flavors they were offering. And wow… what a night.

With a revamped menu and atmosphere, this vessel has created a floating 5-star dining experience that overlooks Waikiki. While they offer a variety of different cruises, we chose the French Style dinner one in order to give a thorough gamut of dining recommendations to our clients. And if we’re going to be recommending this to people, I wanted to be sure the food was good and the service up to par. Yaling and I were both swept away.

When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff and treated like real VIPs. We thought maybe they were giving us special attention because we were from the travel company, but then quickly realized this was the caliber of service they were giving each and every guest. For anyone joining the staff of Star of Honolulu, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that you truly are VIP to them.

We’re here to help, check out our All-Inclusive Hawaii Packages or get help with airfare, picking hotels or activities. If it’s in Hawaii we can make it happen.

A culinary adventure: savoring the 7-course french-style dinne r.

The evening started off on the top deck with hor d oeuvres and champagne. It was a great way to begin the night because the top deck offers sweeping views of Waikiki and Diamond Head, a wonderful view for vacationers. We mingled with other guests over a variety of spring canapés during this cocktail hour, including Cajun shrimp with fire-roasted peppers and Boursin dill aioli, prosciutto, baked brie, and papaya salsa on English cucumber and cream cheese mousse with raspberry and balsamic reduction on Lavosh. This part of the evening only lasted about 10 minutes and wasn’t the best aspect of the experience, but nevertheless, it was nice and the pupus were tasty.

Next, we were escorted to the main dining room, where we were immediately impressed with the fine dishware, napkins and cutlery. Everything about the setting of the table was sophisticated. And like any traditional fine dining restaurant, our waiter wore white gloves and was available to help make every part of our experience enjoyable.

I was happy to find out that dinner included free drinks throughout the entire evening. Furthermore, each cocktail was poured with top shelf liquor and the bartenders were equipped to mix up anything you could possibly want. They also had a drink menu with tropical signature cocktails that definitely boasted Hawaiian themes, and the pours were generous. Meaning, the drinks didn’t seem like the bartenders were sparing.

After the first course of spring canapés, next was zucchini soup. This decadent broth was mixed with Crème Fraiche and cilantro and was a tasty warm-up, especially with the freshly baked French bread to accompany it. The next course was the salad, which consisted of fresh greens and pickled vegetables tossed in an herb vinaigrette. This spring garden salad was light, crisp, and the perfect introduction to one of the main courses. Air-flown live Maine lobster was the dish of the evening, meaning it was my favorite course of the meal. Served with spinach and Ali‘i mushroom purse (which was my second favorite flavor), pea puree, homard sauce, and Tsar Nicolai caviar, this dish was delicious.

Afterward, we enjoyed an intermezzo of pineapple Pinot Grigio sorbet to cleanse our palate and prepare for the next course. We were then served the highest-grade prime tenderloin of beef with carrot and potato cloud, spring vegetable medley and two sauces, Chimichurri and Bordelaise Demi.

The last course was, of course, dessert. White wine poached pear Napoleon with Tahitian vanilla bean gelato, anglaise sauce and raspberry coulis. Accompanying this extravagant sweet was freshly brewed STAR’s original coffee and organic teas. It was the perfect way to finish off the meal.

Beyond Dining: Jazz, Dancing, and Sunset Views

After dinner, Yaling and I enjoyed live jazz entertainment and watched as couples took to the dance floor. Another great part of the evening was that throughout and in between courses, we could get up and explore the decks of the boat. Since this is a sunset cruise, the boat moseys around Waikiki and cruises the coastline for incredible sunset views. It was a beautifully smooth ride, and we both agreed Star of Honolulu is the perfect place for romance. From the boat cruise to the sunset scenery to the 5 star dining, delicious dishes, jazz music, and dancing, it was really a great evening.

The boat is nicely appointed, and it feels like you’re on a big cruise liner ship. While the experience was on par with pretty much any high-end restaurant in Waikiki, what made this evening unique was the fact that it all took place on the boat. Star of Honolulu also throws in some really nice touches like the drink inclusions, jazz music, professional photography, and a fresh red rose for your wife at the end of the night. It’s these small details that really set this experience apart from the others, and we thoroughly enjoyed our night onboard the Star of Honolulu. We loved every single course of the meal and will definitely be recommending this night to anyone wanting a beautiful night atop the waters of Waikiki.

And for those lucky enough to live here in Hawaii, Star of Honolulu will soon offer a 2-for-1 kamaina rate. Treat yourself and a loved one to a French-style evening cruising Waikiki with top-notch service, the highest quality food and drinks, music, and dancing for an unforgettable experience.

Most POPULAR dinner cruise in Hawaii. Honolulu, Hawaii. Yummy Dinner. Ocean view. Sunset. What is one place that you can find all three of these…that is NOT a regular restaurant?

star of honolulu cruise review

The Star of Honolulu DINNER CRUISE . After dinner, we headed up to the 4th floor observation deck to relax on the lounge chairs sipping a Mai Tai.

We absolutely demolished our 1st course (appetizers) and our 2nd course (salad)!

Getting There

  • Shuttle $18-19pp, roundtrip The Honolulu harbor is about 4 miles (6.5 km) from Waikiki. The easiest way to get there and the one that I would recommend is to take the Star of Honolulu ‘s shuttle bus. It makes it super easy, worry-free, and if you have a couple cocktails on the boat, you don't have to think twice about it.
  • Taxi or Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) If you prefer to go in a smaller group, you can also take a taxi or a ride-sharing app like Uber or Lyft. I checked the pricing for Uber and Lyft and it ranged from between $15 to $25 one way from Waikiki to the harbor, depending on when you called it.
  • Drive Out If you opt to drive, they do have parking. The closest parking is going to be by Pier 5 and Pier 6. Keep in mind, Star Panel does not validate for parking.

Entertainment

When you walk up to the boat, you're greeted with pier side hula. Once you get on the boat, they do have musicians playing. As the night progresses, they also do a Polynesian show. They have hula, Tahitian dancing, and lots more. They also end it with a little fun show as well showing Aloha over the years. If you're looking to see a little bit of hula, this might be the dinner cruise for you.

Exploring the Boat

For our dinner, we were sat on the third deck, which is really nice. A lot of people who do the dinner cruise , I noticed, stayed within their deck and didn't really explore much of the boat. However, there's a completely open observation deck which is on the fourth floor, the very top floor. It's easy to access. There are stairs.

This boat is the only ADA compliant dinner cruise on Oahu. There are ramps and an elevator on the boat for wheelchair access to all decks – including the top floor observation deck.

star of honolulu cruise review

It's important to note that the BUFFET option is in a group table of about 8-guests. This means that if you are less than 8, you'll be mixed in with other people.

For the  CASUAL  and  LUXURY  options, you'll be at a group table of about 8-guests. For these sit-down menu options, you can UPGRADE to get the “ CELEBRATION PLAN ” which means you get a private table and souvenir photo (value: $30.00) for each party of two. So, if you are a party of 4-guests and you do the upgrade, you'll get two (2) photos. If you're doing the  Luxury  option, I think the upgrade is worth it especially if you plan on buying the souvenir photo anyway.

Upgrade Option | Celebration Plan

Celebration Plan : +$30.00pp (minimum of 2 guests)

That gets you a private table, window seating, and one (1) souvenir photo for every 2-guests (Souvenir photo value: $30.00). We opted for the Celebration plan.

I absolutely love this dinner cruise . I was chatting with my friend to get her take on it as well and she loved it. What's really interesting is that for a dinner cruise that was serving so many people, the food came out on time at the right intervals and the food was hot when it came out. Our lobster was hot. Our steak was hot. Everything was at the right temperature – which I really appreciated.

As for what you can wear on the dinner cruise, it's completely flexible. You can opt to dress up or dress down. I chose to wear a maxi dress and some nice sandals.

Overall, I absolutely love the Star of Honolulu and completely recommend it. It's great for a date night, for girls night, for celebrations. They also even offer an add-on where you can add on cake orders if you're celebrating a birthday or other event.

In terms of value, this  dinner cruise  is a great out-of-the-box option. Let's take the Buffet, for example, which runs about $100 per person. You get: -Sunset sail (2 hours) -Buffet dinner -Polynesian Show A sunset sail in Waikiki will run around $40-75. A Buffet dinner in Waikiki would run around $40-50.  Plus, you also get a Polynesian show (Hawaiian hula, Tahitian, Tongan, and so forth).

Ws a 5-course meal with steak and lobster. The lobster was delicious, absolutely delicious, and so was the steak. If you don't like steak or lobster, or perhaps want something else, they do offer menu substitutions.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.

DLNR issues letter putting cruise ship industry on notice

CRAIG T. KOJIMA / [email protected].

The Triple Dragon fishing boat cruises past the Noordam cruise ship on April 20.

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources is putting the cruise industry on notice that rules must be followed when visiting the state.

The letter follows DLNR’s investigation last month into whether the Celebrity Edge, a Celebrity Cruise Lines ship had anchored too closely to shore while sailing off Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.

State rules for Na Pali Coast ocean waters require any vessels carrying more than 50 passengers to maintain a distance of at least 3,000 feet from the shoreline, DLNR said.

On May 29, DLNR said its investigation — prompted by community complaints and social media posts – was inconclusive after failing to find evidence that the Celebrity Edge violated any state rules.

DLNR Chair Dawn Chang sent a a letter to Celebrity Cruise Lines, saying the investigation “failed to find definitive evidence” the U.S. flagged cruise ship violated state rules, but that photos appeared to show the ship was indeed much closer to shore.

“This incident created a tremendous amount of angst in the community, as this area is highly protected and valued for its natural beauty and cultural significance,” she said in the letter, which was also addressed to other cruise line companies. “These nearshore waters, along the Napali Coast, are frequented by fishers, divers, kayakers, and swimmers because of its calm waters and rich marine resources.”

“We recognize the cruise ship industry’s contributions to the state’s economy,” she continued. “However, the mission of the DLNR is to ensure Hawaii’s precious and unique natural and cultural resources are protected now and in perpetuity. We are putting the industry on notice that the DLNR and the community will be closely monitoring activity not only along the Napali Coast, but throughout our state ocean waters. We urge you to conduct your operations in compliance with not only the letter of the law, but in the spirit of Aloha.”

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

I pre enrolled online and made an appointment for this location for 1pm.It was empty and there were two people working. Gave them my documents and credit card. I was fingerprinted and they took a photo. It was quick and I should receive my known traveler number within 3-5 days via email. The reason I took away one star was parking. They do not validate parking. Also, the confirmation email I received said the entrance to the parking is on the left side of the front of the building, but I think it was on the right (before you pass the building). I entered the parking structure I saw on the left (after passing the building) but it was the wrong one. They did let me park there but the rate might have been more than if I had been in the correct parking garage.
