Maryland is often called America in Miniature thanks to its varied landscape and diversity of cultures and attractions. But while the state may be small, its sprawling shorelines , lively cities and historical sites make it an ideal vacation destination. U.S. News took into account a number of factors, including the state's variety of things to do, affordability and accessibility, to determine the best places to visit in Maryland. Help determine next year's list by voting for your favorite spots below.

With its pristine stretch of sand and bevy of kid-friendly attractions, Ocean City is the quintessential family vacation destination. Its 10-mile-long beach offers gentle waves that are great for swimming and boogie boarding, plus superb sunrises and fishing opportunities. What's more, Ocean City boasts an impressive boardwalk with all kinds of amenities. In addition to featuring plenty of souvenir shops, bars and restaurants, the boardwalk offers amusement park rides, arcade games and fun attractions, such as Trimper Rides amusement park.

Head to Assateague Island, which sits less than 10 miles south of Ocean City, to enjoy a relaxing, nature-filled vacation. The Maryland side of this barrier island is mostly occupied by Assateague Island National Seashore, where miles of sandy beaches and several hiking and bike trails are available. There's also Assateague State Park, with an oceanfront park and wildlife-filled marshes. While swimming, surfing, beachcombing, sunbathing or surf fishing, keep your eyes peeled for Assateague Island's famous wild horses. But remember, these majestic creatures are wild, so you'll want to admire them from a safe distance.

Overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is a prime spot to get out on the water. The Sailing Capital of the U.S. provides countless opportunities to explore by boat. Additionally, Annapolis hosts multiple sailing-focused events throughout the year, including boat shows and sailboat races. But if you'd rather stay on land, don't fret: The town is home to the beautiful United States Naval Academy campus, as well as Historic Annapolis, where you'll find art galleries, shops and attractions like the Banneker-Douglass Museum. When you're ready to eat, visit Main Street to try a local specialty: steamed crabs.

Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg is a must-visit destination for history buffs. It was here in 1862 that Confederate General Robert E. Lee first invaded the North, resulting in the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, the Battle of Antietam. Today, those who want to learn more about this historic conflict can take a self-guided auto tour of the battlefield or join a ranger-led talk. Just be sure to save some time for a visit to the Newcomer House, an original home on the battlefield, and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum, which features a re-creation of an operating theater.

In its heyday, Chesapeake Beach was a thriving resort destination for travelers arriving by train or steamboat. But now, this bayside locale is better known as a quiet beach town ideal for relaxing getaways. Venture to Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum to learn more about the town's history, or spend some time fishing or crabbing at one of the town's marinas. Visitors can also explore the Chesapeake Bay on a kayak or pontoon boat. Meanwhile, those traveling with children will want to check out the Chesapeake Beach Water Park, which offers everything from waterslides to a lazy river to cabana rentals.

Maryland's largest freshwater lake offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation. In summer, the weather here is warm and dry, making this season an excellent time to go fishing, swimming and kayaking. Meanwhile, winter is when the lake freezes and its shores get covered in snow, giving visitors the chance to go ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. To avoid winter's chilly temps without rubbing elbows with hordes of summer tourists, arrive in spring or fall. These shoulder seasons are terrific times to go biking and hiking around the lake and admire Muddy Creek Falls in nearby Swallow Falls State Park.

National Harbor is home to some of Maryland's best shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, so you can expect to never feel bored when you visit. Make your way to Tanger Outlets at National Harbor for some retail therapy, listen to live music at a dueling piano bar, enjoy a bird's-eye view of Washington, D.C., while riding the Capital Wheel or catch a film during National Harbor's free outdoor summer movie series. If you're looking for a bit more excitement once the sun goes down, stop by MGM National Harbor to test Lady Luck in its casino or catch a show in its 3,000-seat theater.

Despite its gritty reputation, Baltimore is a lively city with attractions that appeal to a variety of travelers. Art lovers will want to check out the collections at the Baltimore Museum of Art and The Walters Art Museum, while sports enthusiasts should time their visits around catching a Baltimore Orioles baseball game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards or a Baltimore Ravens football game at M&T Bank Stadium. For those traveling with children, Baltimore offers all kinds of family-friendly attractions in its popular Inner Harbor neighborhood, including the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center and Port Discovery Children's Museum.

If you're a fan of history, make a beeline for Frederick, a western Maryland city with deep ties to the Civil War. Start your trip exploring Monocacy National Battlefield and the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, or rent a bike and follow the 10-mile Frederick History Bicycle Loop, which stops at more than 20 historical sites. When you've gotten your fill of history, head to Downtown Frederick to check out its hundreds of shops, art galleries and restaurants. The city center is also where you'll find the Public Art Trail and the Frederick Wine Trail.

Nicknamed The Grand Old Ditch, this waterway that once transported coal, agricultural products and lumber from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood, is now a must-visit destination when visiting Maryland and our nation's capital. Inside the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, you'll discover miles of hiking trails and a wide towpath that's suitable for biking, horseback riding and jogging. Plus, with nearly 200 miles of canal to explore, travelers can get out on the water in a kayak or canoe.

This was our first time using…

This was our first time using Kensington, and we were very happy with our experience. Dario helped us plan an amazing trip to Croatia. He was very responsive with planning and catering to any change or request we made. On our travels I reached out to him twice and he responded right away to address some changes we had. Overall the trip was outstanding everything ran like clockwork and we would definitely use Dario and Kensington again in the future.

By far the best Travel Agent I have ever encountered

I have used several travel agents before and my friends and I share the difficult stories of when we hit a snag with them. My experience with Moe Sami at Kensington Tours has been exceptional. Under difficult circumstances because we were rushed, he helped put together a custom-made trip that was not at all standard. He listened carefully to what I wished for, which was a very culturally oriented experience and was able to put together a wonderful two week trip to Morocco. Anytime there was a bump the problem got fixed immediately. His responsiveness to any of my emails was within an hour or so, that includes at night. I was very impressed. He is an overachiever in his field

Kensington & Mirka Nyppeli are amazing

Kensington & Mirka Nyppeli are amazing. Last Spring we were beyond the cancellation date for our trip to Iceland when we had a family tragedy. I reached out to let Mirka know we would be cancelling our adventure, she immediately showed me empathy and sympathy. It was touching to have someone supporting me when I was so focused on my family. Mirka took it upon herself to ask management if they could make an exception with regard to the finances. Kensington agreed to assist us. When great people work for exceptional companies, wonderful things happen. I am excited to say we have started to re-book our adventure. My wife and I are nearing retirement and for years to come we will be exploring the world with Kensington & the assistance of Mirka.

I have been traveling in Europe for 50 years. Using Kensington Tours was the biggest travel mistake I ever made. Bon a word, they are horrible. I would give them zero stars if I could. Their service and communication is non-existent. You will regret it if you book your trip with them.

We worked with Courtney Barnes. She helped to coordinate exactly what we wanted to do and see on our trip. She was professional, timely, and friendly. She made it easy to prepare for and be excited for our trip to Banff Canada.

Great Experience

I worked with Samuel Corker to plan the experience of a lifetime for my clients in London following their cruise. From the onset, Sam provided excellent options that met my clients wish list. When planning for 12 people, it can be challenging to get everything everyone wants and pull it all off but Sam was wonderful in changing things around when issues arose or clients asked for small changes here and there. This trip was months in the planning and Samuel was available with quick turn around time responses throughout it all! We definitely recommend Kensington and Sam for your travel needs!

Cruise excursion tours

I worked with Courtney on excursions for our cruise through Europe. She listened to everything that I had wanted and made the trip an unforgettable one for sure! I highly recommend working with Courtney but also anyone from Kensington as this is not our first trip working with Kensington Tours. Is great to work with him very knowledgeable.

Extraordinary Ring Road Trip to Iceland

Our trip to Iceland could not have been better. Courtney did an amazing job putting together a wonderful trip. She listened to what my interests were and arranged for an exceedingly memorable itinerary. Our guide, Asta, knew all the ins and outs about traveling in Iceland, and was super fun to spend time with. We did the Golden Circle and the entire Ring Road except for the West Fjords. All the activities that Courtney booked were amazing! We saw gorgeous, dramatic terrain including glaciers, seals, puffin birds, ice and stone caves, cauldrons, spectacular waterfalls, thermal lagoons and more. The hotel accommodations were the best Iceland has to offer, even in remote areas. I highly recommend this trip!

Date of experience : August 12, 2024

Dear Wendy, Thank you for taking the time to write your review for us. It is wonderful to read how attentive and organized Courtney was when putting together your Iceland itinerary. We know just how important the local people are to your experience - thank you for your kind words for Asta. We hope to assist you in the future for other exciting travel plans. Sinerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Great first experience with Kensington Tours

Kristen Edmonds with Kensington Tours made this process so easy! I told her exactly what my client was looking for and she nailed it. She was so patient with the many changes I threw at her in order to get it perfect for my clients. I'm forever a Kensington fan!

Dear Lana, Thank you so much for your kind review for Kristen and Kensington Tours. We cherish our connections to great agents such as yourself. We look forward to working with you again soon! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Amazing Trip to India

My father and I used Kensington (Dev Jai specifically) for the first time to plan a trip to India this summer. Everything was great from start to finish—well organized, personalized to fit our preferences, and a great balance of structure and free time. All of our tour guides were great, but Brijesh in Agra was particularly excellent. Kensington representatives met us in every city to make sure we knew the itinerary and we had the same driver (Jaggi) for most of the trip, who was incredibly kind and attentive. There’s really nothing I would change. We’re already talking about using Kensington for our next family vacation.

Date of experience : July 28, 2024

Dear Sarah, Thank you for your kind words for Kensington and Dev Jai. It's great that you and your father got to go on such a special trip to India. We are so glad our local partners delivered excellent service to you both. We are excited to plan your next family vacation to a new destination! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

I worked with Rob Trunk to design a tour to Germany for clients, a family of 6.....Rob's ideas for this family were great...so many details...he put so much into this trip...unfortunately the clients have decided to wait another year or two to travel until the youngest child can enjoy it more

Dear Michele, Thank you for your review for Rob's great work on your client's itinerary. We are so looking forward to working with you again soon! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Japan Family Vacation

My family just returned from Japan. This was the most amazing and magical adventure of a lifetime. Our travel planner, Mia Liang, put in place a vacation that went far beyond our most beautiful dreams. Our family consisted of 4 generations and there was something for everyone of us. Every last detail of the trip was well planned. The hotels, tours, tour guides, drivers and transportation were all coordinated to match our needs and then some. I truly cannot thank Kensington Tours and especially, Mia, for providing us with this breathtaking vacation.

Date of experience : July 29, 2024

Dear Marilyn, Thank you for your review for Kensington Tours and your planner Mia. We are excited to know it was such a memorable trip for you and your family! We hope to be able to assist you with family trips in the future. Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

10 (out of 10) High Praise and Recommendation

From our travel advisor (Lily) to everyone we came into contact with along our travels and during our African journey (from Kensington to hotel staff, to travel guides/drivers and absolutely everyone), they were all outstanding and never missed a beat. The level of client service was next-level outstanding, and while we had very high expectations, I can honestly say, the Kensington team still exceeded them. I have nothing but the highest praise and give Kensington a 10 (out of 10) recommendation.

Date of experience : July 13, 2024

Dear Keith, Thank you for the wonderful review for your African adventure, Kensington Tours and partners, and Lily. We are thrilled to read every step of the way was seamless. We are dedicated to your experience, so thank you very much for your praise and recommendation. Hopefully we will be in touch again soon. Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

EXCEPTIONAL: Moe Sami of Kensington Tours…

THANK YOU Moe Sami of Kensington Tours for your customization of our trips to foreign lands. You listen well, and you deliver. You are so adept at taking what we desire and blending it with your knowledge of what we should see. First I must admit that of all the continents we've traveled, no guide or tour was as impeccable as those Kensington provided in Egypt. With that being said, the expectation is always very high. Your expertise in Africa, Jordan, Israel and Portugal was exceptional. We had the best tour guides we have ever experienced. We had an unbelievable vacation in those lands, replete with our wishes, elevated by your recommendations, and exceptional exposure to culture, food, tours, hotel accommodations and excursions. Thank you for all your hard work and making these trips possible with short notice during high season demand. We were blessed overall.

Date of experience : August 01, 2024

Dear Blessings Winn, Thank you very much for your wonderful review for Moe Sami. We are so happy you felt well taken care of and your itinerary was customized to your liking. We know that people are the biggest influence on travel experiences, and we are thrilled you found our guides and partners in Egypt to be exceptional. Thank you for choosing Kensington Tours again, and we are excited to plan with you again soon! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Tanzania beyond amazing

An absolutely phenomenal trip to Tanzania! Abood Omar at Kensington Tours was nothing short of amazing! Not only did he book our trip, he gave us detailed information and tips which made our trip seamless. He arranged a FaceTime call with me and my kids prior to our departure to get us “pumped” and answer any questions we had. The trip was planned perfectly for my family and exceeded our expectations! Our guide, Alli, was amazing also! So knowledgeable, kind and accommodating! Because of his relationships with other guides and experience as a guide, we were able to see The Big Five, a Black Rhino and her calf, lions mating, cheetahs hunt and so much more! Truly a trip of a lifetime!

Date of experience : July 23, 2024

Dear Christine, What an exciting adventure seeing the big five and so much more in Tanzania! Thank you very much for writing your review. We are so glad Abood's expertise was such a hit for you and your family, as well as the your local guide Alli. These relationships are what make for special trips. We look forward to assisting you with future travel plans. Sincerely, -the Team at Kensington Tours

We loved working with Kensington Tours!!

We loved working with Kensington Tours! They planned a phenomenal trip to Peru for me and my nephew. It was wonderful working with Noraly Barilles to plan the trip. She took all of the things we wanted to do and arranged them into an excellent itinerary. All of our drivers, greeters, and guides were wonderful! The Kensington team also went the extra mile when my nephew left his Airpods at a hotel and made sure they arrived at our next stop - an amazing feat! Thanks Omar!! Many thanks to our amazing guides - Gonzalo (Cuzco), Patricia (Machu Picchu), and Juan (Puno/Lake Titicaca). We would also like to thank our greeters/organizers - Omar and Willy - who ensured we made every connection and found and delivered the AirPods. 😁 Additionally, per my request, Kensington Tours changed the last night of our trip to come back to Lima a day earlier. They made everything easy - delivered options for the change and offered to help with any other details (thanks Noraly and Gopal!). We highly recommend Kensington Tours! Thanks for arranging such a wonderful and memorable trip!

Date of experience : August 16, 2024

Dear AF Johnston, Thank you so much for your kind words for Kensington Tours and Noraly. Our 24/7 support team strives to assist efficiently when things happen such as losing Airpods - a travel necessity! We pride ourselves in our local partnerships, because people are such an important part of learning about local culture. We are so happy to read everyone involved made your trip wonderful. Thank you again for your feedback. We look forward to connecting again soon! Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

Courtney Barnes was great. Always answering our questions quickly and she set up a great 5 day trip for us. Our in country guides were excellent as well. Iceland was amazing and everyone working with Kensington was very accommodating!

An Italian Holiday to Remember...

I had the pleasure of working with Stephani Fernando for almost a year on my client's week-long Italy trip for a group of 24, starting in Rome, ending in Florence, with a day stop in Sienna. Stephani booked the most gorgeous hotels in each city, along with tours of the most popular sights, and a welcome and farewell dinner. There were many changes along the way that Stephani handled each request timely, and in a very professional manner. She took the time to speak with me and my clients to ensure the trip plans were in place correctly and the flow of the trip understood. The dinners were well planned, with the farewell dinner in a stunning, private room at Cibreo in Florence. The clients raved about the trip when they returned and could not thank Stephani enough for such a well-planned trip. Their feedback was that the trip was flawless, and they will definitely recommend Kensington. I was very pleased with Stephani's services, and the services offered by Kensington's ground team in Italy that supported the group for the week. I look forward to working with Stephani and Kensington in the future.

Date of experience : July 18, 2024

Dear Lisa, Thank you so much for your stellar review for Stephani and Kensington Tours! We are so happy to read that the clients on your Italy trip were raving about all their experiences and services. We can't wait to host future trips for you. Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours

10 days in Ireland

My husband and I had the most amazing 10-day trip to Ireland! Our driver, Paul Rodgers, was so friendly and knowledgeable. We loved every tour— there wasn’t one site that we didn’t enjoy thoroughly. My husband loved touring both the Guinness Brewery and the Jameson Distillery as well as the personal pub tour in Dublin. My favorite site was Kylemore Abbey, but I also loved the boat tour to see the Cliffs of Moher and the tour of the castle in Cashel. We found all of our hotel stays to be luxurious and comfortable, especially our night at The Palace in Cashel. Our dinner at The Bishop’s Buttery was to die for. We loved our final night at Dromoland Castle as well. Just a five-star experience all the way!

Date of experience : July 08, 2024

Dear Amy, Thank you for your wonderful review! The activities and tours put together for you sound so exciting and full of history. We are so glad we could help you experience Ireland in luxury. We know guides are so important and we are so glad Paul was a hit. We look forward to connecting with you for any future travel ideas. Sincerely, -The Team at Kensington Tours
