Prop Farm: Mixed feelings on Jordan Spieth while Nick Dunlap pops for bettors at John Deere Classic

The Fourth of July weekend kicks off in Silvis, Illinois, with the John Deere Classic. A classic indeed as this has been a heavily supported mainstay on the PGA TOUR since 1971, with TPC Deere Run playing as the host course since 2000.

This ought to be our very own "Signature Event" here in the Prop Farm, right? This is the week this column has been waiting for! Tractors, plows, mowers, blades and scrapers, cutters and shredders — all kinds of farm equipment in the heart of farming country. John Deere has been churning out winners on TOUR for decades. Let's see if they can help us dig up a few this week inside the Prop Farm.

Many of the TOUR's most recognizable names are taking the week off and it is certainly understandable given the run of events leading up and what now lies ahead in the Genesis Scottish Open followed by the final major championship of the season, The Open Championship. With all of that however, arguably the very most recognizable name in the game, Jordan Spieth, is here in the field for the first time since 2015.

Spieth made the John Deere Classic his maiden TOUR win — as many players have — as a 19-year-old in 2013. He turned the trick again, winning in 2015. Here he is, back again, headlining the field in 2024. At the betting window, Spieth's return is garnering mixed reviews.

"He is responsible for our highest ticket count percentage in the outright winner market at 8.4%," said Drew O'Dell, senior data analyst at BetMGM. "Spieth represents our second largest handle percentage at 7.5% and is our second largest overall liability.”

No different for Thomas Gable, director of race and sports at The Borgata in New Jersey. "Spieth is the most bet in terms of handle and ticket count. He's also been getting bet on in his matchups."

Senior Manager at Mandalay Bay, a BetMGM Sportsbook in Las Vegas, Tristan Davis compared Spieth to another Texas favorite. "He's like the Dallas Cowboys. We are going to lay him every week whether he is in form or not," said Davis. "Spieth always goes around in the red for us pre-tournament."

The mood is very different elsewhere here in Las Vegas, however. "No one cares for Jordan Spieth right now (or lately)," said veteran golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman. "After releasing our outright openers, he's actually drifted to a higher price," Sherman explained.

No sign of Spieth activity for Hall of Fame bookmaker, Nick Bogdanovich either. "Maverick McNealy, Denny McCarthy, and Davis Riley are drawing heavy action in the outright market," said the Las Vegas native.

As a fan, I'd love to see Spieth find success at the John Deere Classic once again but as a bettor, I stayed away. A 13-time winner on TOUR, Spieth has just two wins in the last seven years. I did land on another of the favorites though in Sungjae Im. I also played some long shots to win this week in Adam Svensson, Daniel Berger and Joel Dahmen.

One player seems to be popping up just about everywhere this week. "The matchup with the most steam has been Nick Dunlap over Keith Mitchell," said Bogdanovich. This was echoed by Seamus Magee, a sports trader at BetMGM. "Dunlap looks sharp in his matchup over Luke Clanton. He's gone from +110 to -105."

"Aside from the favorites, we've taken a decent chunk of money on Dunlap in the outright market as an outsider," Magee continued. "His outright price moved from +4500 to +3300, so I'd say there is definitely some sharp interest in Nick Dunlap this weekend. He'd be a loser for us if he makes a run."

I took a hard look at Dunlap this week off of his top-10 finish last week in Detroit. It was hard not to notice him last week but the truth is, he's been a bit inconsistent as of late. He was 66th out of 70 players two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship and missed the cut at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. He did finish 12th however, at the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. I didn't want to fall trap to betting on only what I had seen most recently. The bigger picture kept me staying away from Dunlap this week in Illinois.

In line with Bogdanovich, Magee also noted that bettors are piling on, against Mitchell at his shop. "Sharps like Davis Thompson over Keith Mitchell in a tournament matchup. He opened -125 and is now -145."

Magee offered up one final morsel, and no surprise, they're on the favorites. "Sungjae Im and Aaron Rai have virtually all of the First Round Leader money and it's pretty even between the two as far as who is attracting more money."

Farm through the information, check the weather reports, fertilize anything that piques your interest, ultimately plant the seeds you feel are most likely to harvest and run like the wind to the window — because nothing runs like a Deere.

2024 John Deere Classic picks, predictions, odds, field: Golf expert fading Jordan Spieth at TPC Deere Run

Sungjae Im will look to win his first PGA Tour event in three years when he tees off in the 2024 John Deere Classic beginning Thursday at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. The 26-year-old Im, who is ranked No. 29 in the world, has not won on Tour since capturing the Shriners Children's Open in 2021. He has been feast-or-famine over his last six events, with four top-nine finishes and two missed cuts. This week, Im is one of three co-favorites in the 2024 John Deere Classic odds, at +1800. The other two co-favorites are two-time John Deere Classic champion Jordan Spieth and defending champion Sepp Straka. 

Aaron Rai (+2200), Maverick McNealy (+2500), Keith Mitchell (+2500) and Denny McCarthy (+2500) round out the top seven choices on the PGA odds board among the 156 John Deere Classic players. Before locking in any John Deere Classic 2024 picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 50-34-5 and returning 13.22 units over that span. That's a $1,322 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023.

Nejad also nailed Wyndham Clark, a 75-1 longshot, as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship last year. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Top 2024 John Deere Classic expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is down on the chances of co-favorite Spieth (+1800). A 13-time winner on the PGA Tour, Spieth is in danger of missing the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He ranks 59th in the FedEx Cup standings, and only the top 70 players after the Wyndham Championship in early August will qualify for the Playoffs.

Spieth, a two-time winner at TPC Deere Run, enters the John Deere hoping to recapture some form. He has not finished better than 29th in any tournament since the Valero Texas Open in the first week in April. "His short odds in this tournament are exclusively based on name recognition, and I think he belongs in the +3000 range," Nejad told SportsLine. 

However, Nejad is backing 31-year-old PGA Tour veteran and tournament co-favorite Straka (+1800). The defending John Deere Classic champion, Straka is looking to become the first player to successfully defend his John Deere title since Steve Stricker won three in a row from 2009-11. Only three players have won the John Deere in back-to-back seasons.

Nejad believes Straka's game is a good fit for TPC Deere Run. Straka ranks 32nd on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: approach the green (+0.376) and 33rd in strokes gained: off the tee (+0.333). The PGA Tour is in the Quad Cities for the John Deere Classic before heading to Europe for the Scottish Open and the season’s final major.

This year’s John Deere Classic does not feature much firepower, but that does not mean this tournament will disappoint. Usually, the opposite transpires as this event has a penchant for producing drama down the stretch.

Look no further than last year, when Sepp Straka soared up the leaderboard and arrived on the 18th tee with a chance to shoot a 59. He needed to make one more birdie to shoot that sub-60 score, but he pulled his approach into the lake beside the green. He settled for a double-bogey—and a 62 instead—but still won the tournament by two.

Nevertheless, get ready to see plenty of birdies, not unlike the last two weeks at the Travelers Championship and the Rocket Mortgage Classic . Only twice in the past decade has the winning score been less than 20-under-par: in 2021, when Lucas Glover won at 19-under, and in 2017, when Bryson DeChambeau won by a stroke at 18-under.

John Deere Classic Betting Predictions, Picks:

Jordan spieth: heart says yes, mind says no.

The entire golf world seems to want Jordan Spieth to return to glory, something he has not experienced since April 2022, when he won the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head. Considering the diminished field strength this week—Sepp Straka, at 24th, is the highest-ranked player—you would think this would be a good opportunity for Spieth to bounce back and contend. Plus, he has won the John Deere Classic twice, in 2013 and 2015.

Yet, he has struggled mightily over the past few months, as his iron play and short game have let him down. He has not posted a top-10 since the Valero Texas Open, and in the nine tournaments since, his best finish came at Quail Hollow, where he tied for 29th. Given his poor play, he should have much higher odds than the +2200, but name recognition helps boost his price. Don’t take the bait.

Seamus Power posts first top 10 of season

After having a solid 2022-23 campaign, in which he qualified for the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, Seamus Power has struggled to replicate that success in 2024.

He has had some strong finishes, including a T-12 at Hilton Head, a T-16 at the Wells Fargo Championship, and most recently, a T-20 at the Travelers Championship, thanks to a final round 7-under 63.

But the Irishman will post his first top-10 of the season at TPC Deere Run. For some reason, he loves this golf course. He has not missed a cut in his five appearances in this event.

Last year, he tied for 13th, ranking seventh among the field in strokes gained approaching the green. Two years before, Power tied for eighth. He also has a scoring average of 67.95 over his 20 rounds played in the Quad Cities, with a third-round 4-over 75 in 2019 being a significant outlier.

Power is +400 to finish in the top-10.

Eric Cole continues to surge, records best finish of year

Eric Cole plays almost every week. Literally. This week’s John Deere Classic will mark his 24th start of the 2024 season, and he will arrive in the Quad Cities with some momentum.

He tied for sixth at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his best finish of the year, but something tells us that he will do better than that this week. Cole is a solid putter, and for events like the John Deere Classic, which will yield plenty of birdies, it all comes down to how well players can roll it in the greens.

The Nova Southeastern alum ranks 13th on tour in overall putting average and 13th in putts per round, needing just a shade above 28 on average.

Hence, we like Cole to finish in the top 5 at +1000.

Odds-on favorite Sungjae Im contends but does not win

Sungjae Im is the odds-on favorite to win at +1400, but we do not believe he will record his third career PGA Tour victory this week. Yet, we like Im to contend, just as he has in numerous non-majors this season.

Since missing the cut at Augusta National , Im also failed to make the weekend at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open . But in the five other events he has played since then, the Seoul, South Korea native has posted four top 10s and a T-12 finish. His best result came at the Travelers Championship, where he tied for third.

We like him to continue his strong play in the Quad Cities, finishing in the top 5 at +330, but somebody else will take the victory lap in a John Deere tractor instead.

2024 John Deere Classic winner: Patton Kizzire

Patton Kizzire did not start the season on the right foot, missing six straight cuts after tying for 13th at the Sony Open in Hawaii. But the former Auburn Tiger has re-discovered his form, making five of his last six cuts. Of those five events, he has finished no worse than T-28, which came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a team event.

Yet Kizzire is a terrific ball-striker, ranking eighth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approaching the green. He is fourth in greens in regulation percentage, finding the putting surface 71.53% of the time and eighth in proximity to the hole at roughly 35 feet. The question becomes whether or not he can convert those opportunities this week. Kizzire ranks 67th on tour in that regard, converting his birdie chances nearly 32% of the time, but something tells us he will do better than that this week at TPC Deere Run, a course where he has a strong history.

He has three top-25 finishes, including a T-11 in 2021 and a T-16 in 2022, but did miss the cut last year. Nevertheless, Kizzire bounces back with a vengeance this week to win the John Deere Classic and gain a tremendous career boost. Give us the long shot to win at +9000.
