Today's travelers, especially those seeking luxury experiences, don't always want to wade through all that information. Consequently, the travel-advisor industry has experienced significant growth in recent years , especially among Gen Z and millennial travelers . According to Grand View Research, the global luxury-travel market is worth an estimated $1.3 trillion and expected to grow 7.9% from 2024 to 2030 .

Luxury travelers are not necessarily looking for the best deals but the best way to plan a trip without the hassle. This is where a luxury-travel advisor comes in. Agents can provide personalized itineraries, access to upgrades and selective experiences, and support throughout the trip.

Business Insider talked to three luxury-travel advisors about the industry's growth and how to transition into travel advising.

Why the luxury-travel industry is booming

Diana Hechler, the owner of D. Tours Travel , said the luxury-travel industry has grown because travelers have access to more luxury-level properties, and more people are willing to pay luxury prices. Also, a vacation is seen as a necessity for Gen Z travelers .

"People are booking vacations more than ever and want them to be stress-free and restorative. And nothing does that better than luxury travel," Hechler told BI. "Despite the higher prices, the segment of travelers that want luxury and are willing to pay for it has grown as well."

Angela Adto Tepper, the owner of AZA Luxury Travel , said that the shift toward luxury travel had increased since the pandemic, with more Americans prioritizing travel.

"The luxury-travel sector has evolved to prioritize wellness, health, sustainability, and transformative experiences, and people are now prioritizing meaningful travel experiences and pursuing bucket-list trips," Tepper said. "Advisors have adapted by curating journeys tailored to each client."

Why travelers work with advisors

One of the biggest advantages of working with a travel advisor is that it helps travelers cut through the noise and information overload. Traveler agents work on commission, getting a percentage of hotel, cruise, or tour costs, which is paid after a trip is over. Many agents also charge an up-front fee for research and planning.

"The internet was supposed to be the death of advisors, and instead, it's made us more valuable than ever," Hechler said. "While some people love to spend time researching their vacations and doing it themselves, many don't have time to 'waste' on the internet starting from scratch. Saving time is problem-solving for almost everyone; anytime you can solve people's problems, you can have a successful business."

Travel advisors can also offer complimentary upgrades and have access to experiences that might not be available to the public.

"Working with a travel advisor can be summarized by three E's," Tepper said. "We can provide expertise and insider knowledge, extras with personalized service, and emergency assistance."

With the prevalence of Instagram and TikTok, it might seem like everyone is going to the same places. So booking luxury hotels or making reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants is no longer enough; travelers want advisors to curate one-of-a-kind experiences.

"The luxury-travel sector is not just about opulence and indulgence but also about creating meaningful, enriching experiences that leave a lasting impact," Maurice Smith, the founder and CEO of the luxury-travel agency Eugene Toriko , said. "Sustainable and regenerative travel practices are becoming increasingly important, focusing on preserving and enhancing the destinations we visit."

Tips for transitioning into travel advising

If you're ready to move into the industry, it's worth taking stock of your skills first. For example, Tepper said people with event-planning experience might transition well into travel advising since itinerary planning and familiarity with booking platforms are part of the job. She added that soft skills, like interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and adaptability, would also come in handy.

Tepper recommended contacting an advisor before switching over. "If you're considering the career change, one of the best things you can do is secure a reputable mentor," she said. "A mentor can offer invaluable guidance, accelerating professional growth and enhancing skill development, leading to greater success and higher earnings."

It also helps to study travel trends, have a deep knowledge of a destination, and build expertise around types of travel, such as multigenerational trips , cruises, or honeymoons. Tepper said that prospective advisors must also remember that they're not necessarily looking for the "best discounts" for clients but creating tailored trips with impeccable customer service.

"To maintain the quality of our personalized work, we occasionally have to turn away a client," Tepper said. "Not every client is the right fit for our service. This selectivity ensures that we can devote the necessary time and attention to crafting great experiences for everyone while upholding the high standards we have put in place."

The benefits of travel advising

Travel advising provides valuable services to travelers, but agents can also receive perks like complimentary trips sponsored by hotels and tourism boards and travel discounts.

"One of the biggest perks of this job is the opportunity to explore the world and indulge in my passion for travel," Tepper said. "Imagine waking up in a new city, tasting exotic cuisines, and immersing yourself in diverse cultures while doing what you love. For me, it's a career that blends passion and purpose."

The job also comes with a few challenges. Smith said that agents must stay on top of ever-changing travel regulations to ensure the safety of their clients. But ultimately, he said, it's a rewarding career that prioritizes relationships.

"Travel advising offers flexibility and the potential to work remotely, allowing for a good work-life balance," Smith said. "Additionally, the satisfaction of helping clients create unforgettable memories and the joy of turning their travel dreams into reality is incredibly rewarding."

Let’s start with the first question. How do I get started?  I have been in those shoes and was overwhelmed with what I thought was a complex question. In the end, the answer is quite simple:  you just decide you want to do it!

In reality, there is no special training or education you must have. Depending on the state or province you live in, there may be some licensing or certifications needed, but in general, you can just about put up a sign that says, “ I’m now a Luxury Travel Advisor ”.

Do I need an education?

No, you don’t NEED an education. But does an education help? Of course – but by no means is it mandatory, nor is it a guarantee.  I find the most successful Luxury Travel Advisors have a true passion for travel, are a “people person”, employ good writing skills, possess creativity, have a knack for excellent customer service and willing to work hard… very hard, for this is not your regular 9-5 job!

Do I need to be well-traveled? 

This one gets a little tricky to answer.  Ideally, yes, you should be well-travelled; but again, that is not mandatory.  Your lack of travel can be easily compensated by your passion for travel and your passion to learn about new destinations, your excellent customer service, your people skills and your determination to succeed. It’s not the simplest road, but if you have the right qualities, you will succeed. I have met many successful Luxury Travel Advisors who got into the business without a solid travel background and became hugely successful, mainly due to their passion, drive and commitment.

How to Become a Luxury Travel Advisor, Pt. 4:

This may be the trickiest question of all. In the end, being a Travel Advisor is akin to being a salesperson in the sense you are working on commission (as well as a recommended planning/consultation/service fee).  The drawback to this is there are no guarantees. The positive, of course, is there are no limits to how much you can make. In the end, the harder and smarter you work, the more you will earn!

This is the second trickiest question to answer as there is no guaranteed formula.  Let’s talk a bit about generalities and specifics.

As mentioned before, a passion for travel, drive and commitment are essential to becoming a successful Luxury Travel Advisor. So is the belief (and practice) that taking care of your clients and doing what is right for them is at the forefront of everything you do. Emergencies and issues don’t happen just during business hours; you must be willing (and able) to take care of your clients in the evenings, on the weekends, during the holidays and maybe even when YOU are on vacation!

This may sound like a big commitment, and it is.  But the rewards are so great, it makes it all worth it. If you are like me, taking care of a client in distress, solving their issues and rescuing their trip, is, in itself, a huge reward!

A few more specific things you need to be a successful Luxury Travel Advisor are a niche, good potential clients, and most importantly, choosing the right host agency to be your partner.

Niche: what is your niche going to be? Honeymoons? Family Trips? Italy? Cruises? Safari? Business Travel? Luxury Travel?

The good thing is, you can start with one niche and as you learn and experience more or as your clients’ needs change, you can move or expand into a new specialty or niche. I have seen many people who started in business/corporate travel and moved into the luxury side of the business.  Others started with a specialization in honeymoons and transitioned into family travel as their clients’ families grew.

Good Potential Clients: Do you have potential clients? And if so, are they “good” potential clients?  Depending on your niche, people you know may or may not be “good” potential clients. If you want to specialize in safaris, do you have potential clients that are actually interested in safaris? If you want to specialize in honeymoons, so you have potential clients that are getting married or at least in that typical age range for marriage?  And if you want to specialize in luxury travel, do you have potential clients that are willing to spend on a luxury trip?

Before you make the decision to become a Luxury Travel Advisor, you should make sure you have a good base of potential clients. Without a good base to start, you can still be successful, it may just be more of a challenge.

Choosing the Right Host Agency: Choosing the right host agency is probably the most important decision you will make as you get ready to start your new career! What is right for others may not be right for you, and vice versa.

The first thing I would do is compare your niche to the niche of the host agency.  Do you want to specialize in cruises? If so, pick a host agency that specializes in cruises. Specialize in safaris? Pick an agency that specializes on a safari.  Want to sell all-inclusive resorts? Pick an agency that specializes in all-inclusives.  Luxury Travel? Well…you know what I’m going to say!

Should you go with a large agency or a small agency? This is more of a personal choice. You can partner with a large, well-known agency, but you could very well get lost among the numbers. And personally, I think your potential clients are more interested in YOU, not who you are signed with.

If you’re keen on partnering with The Luxury Travel Agency – or even just considering it – the next few paragraphs will provide you with everything you need to know.

A smaller agency can typically offer you more support and hands-on mentoring; the last thing you want is to be just a number!   Speaking as someone who learned the hard way and started with a big company which offered very little support, I know how important it is to sign on with a company that is small enough to support and mentor their Advisors.

With that said, it is imperative they are large enough to offer you everything a host agency should in order to be successful: partnerships with the companies you want to sell (be sure to check out all our partners!) , experience in the industry (especially the niche area you are interested in), contacts and great relationships in the industry, training and mentoring; marketing, and support. You should know that your host agency is there for you, to help you grow and succeed.

In the end, picking the right host agency from the start can kickstart a relationship that, if done right, will last for decades.

While it may be tempting to jump into planning mode and wow your client with travel suggestions, it’s important to get acquainted with your traveler first. Travel advising is a people-focused business, so client relationships are everything. “Really get to know your client and curate their travel experience exactly to their preferences and needs,” said Fora Advisor Kristyne Wada . Take time to learn about your clients' travel style, what types of trips they have loved, hotel vibes they prefer, activities they enjoy — the works. That way, you can tailor your suggestions accurately (and eventually save you both time!). This process can begin with a phone call. “The most important step is to have the initial conversation — phone, zoom or in person — and discover what it is that your client needs to have an amazing experience,” said Fora Advisor Katie McAvoy . “Talking to someone for 20 minutes makes a huge difference in understanding their needs!” Katie added.

…One more time for the people in the back! Doing your due diligence to research a destination, hotel and all the nuts and bolts of a trip itinerary is the best way to level up as a travel advisor (and look amazing to your clients). 

Research is crucial, especially when making recommendations to clients and booking on their behalf. Look at photos, read reviews, double check the details and source community intel. You’ll thank us later.

“When starting to plan a full itinerary trip, I plot all the hotels I’m considering on a Google Map to better visualize which hotels are in the best locations for my client's interest,” said Fora Advisor Elizabeth Kaczka . “So far I’ve mapped out my favorite hotels in almost 40 countries!" Elizabeth added.

Doing your homework can also mean reaching out for clarification. “If I’m planning a trip to a destination I’ve never visited or a hotel I’m not familiar with, I reach out to the hotel directly,” said Elizabeth. “I ask what a typical length of stay is. The hotels will give you a general idea of how guests spend their time at each location so you can customize guests’ stay based on how much they’d like to explore,” she said.  

3. Lean into community intel

“Organization is key,” said Fora Advisor Jennifer Schwartz .

“Whether it be an agenda, to-do or task lists, come up with a system that works for you and stick to it!” she added.

Cheval Blanc Randheli’s signature art de recevoir welcomes couples and families in the Maldives with a unique sense of genuine warmth and French hospitality. A private designer seaplane carries you to this ultra-exclusive 5-star paradise north of Malé, where 46 villas take palm-roofed cabana living to a new level. The accommodations feel like elegant cathedral-style lofts, each featuring a variety of contemporary design elements, high doors and ceilings, outdoor areas for relaxation, stunning private swimming pool and lagoon-side pontoons. PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • Cheval Blanc Randheli is located in the Noonu Atoll, one of the Maldives’ most unspoiled atolls (which is also home to Velaa Private Island and Soneva Jani). The 40 minute seaplane transfer from Male to the resort is a breathtaking sightseeing trip  in itself, offering amazing views of tiny, sugar-white island rings sparkling atop turquoise colored lagoons and the brilliant sapphire blue ocean. At Male’s seaplane terminal, guests can wait in the luxurious Cheval Blanc lounge while waiting for the seaplane, which is sometimes operated by Cheval Blanc’s private designer airplane.   • Cheval Blanc Randheli is set on a cluster of 6 islands in one of the Maldives’ most breathtakingly beautiful lagoons. Three of these islands are connected by bridges, while the other three are only accessible by boats. The main island – a completely natural island – features 16 beach villas, most of the restaurants, the gym, the pool, and the kids club. The main island is connected by bridge to two smaller (man-made) islands, which are home to 29 lagoon and water villas. At short distance from the main island, and only reachable by small boat, are two other man-made islands; one of them is housing the spa while the other one is home to a private residence (more on that below). The sixth island – a natural and unspoiled paradise – can only be reached by a 5 min speedboat ride and it is home to tennis courts and a jungle yoga.
  • Cheval Blanc Randheli Maldives features 46 ultra-luxe villas which are artfully placed between the tropical greenery and the crystal-clear lagoon, either over water or on the beach. Each of the 46 villas is a private retreat with pool, offering a spectacular sense of space with monumental wooden pivoting doors that can separate or connect the living and sleeping areas according to guests’ desires. Large glass doors on both sides of the villa open fully onto the idyllic landscape or can be closed to create a warm and cosy atmosphere. Guests of all villas enjoy private butler service.
  • During my holiday, I stayed in a fabulous one-bedroom Lagoon Villa , which was perched on stilts on the island’s sunset side and presiding over stunning views of Cheval Blanc Randheli’s magnificent lagoon. The villa featured a large living room, spacious bedroom with kingsize bed, double dressing room and an open-plan bathroom with his & hers vanities, a standalone bathtub, and an indoor & outdoor shower. A large terrace boasted a 12.5 m (41 ft) long private swimming pool, a pergola (for dining facing the ocean ) and an overwater lounge area.
  • Located just a few minutes from the main island and accessible by boat, Cheval Blanc Randheli Private Island is the resort’s most exclusive and spectacular accommodation. The spectacular dimensions and exclusive features of the enormous villa – ideal for a stay with family or friends – inspire a sense of unfettered freedom. The specifics: four bedrooms, three large adjoining lounges — including a piano lounge — a projection room, two majestic dining rooms — one indoor and one outdoor — a private spa and fitness room on stilts, a 25 m (82 ft) infinity pool, and an independent villa for friends.
  • An elegant and refined paradise, Cheval Blanc Randheli is the work of the celebrated architect Jean-Michel Gathy . Designed in the spirit of loft living, the villas combine a sense of detail and tailor-made furniture to offer an exclusive residential experience. In an aesthetic combining local inspirations and contemporary sensibility, island materials such as teak, rattan, bamboo, thatch and coconut are refined with graphic lines and original volumes. Gathy’s magnificent architecture is enhanced by a subtle color palette combining elegant tones of white and taupe with the liveliness of pop-art yellow and tangy green.
  • A collection of contemporary artworks by Vincent Beaurin complements the design of the resort. The emblem of the resort is “Arch,” a monumental sculpture rising from the lagoon, not far from the seaplane’s docking station. “Constellation” is a center piece at the fine-dining restaurant Le 1947, and finally one each of the series “Crowns”, composed of 46 shimmering ocelli, is installed in each of the villas. The artist has covered these circular “eyes” with the glitter of coloured glass, giving a chromatic experience that reverberates with the signature colors of Cheval Blanc Randheli. F
  • The resort’s signature gourmet restaurant, Le 1947, owes its name to the most prestigious vintage of Château Cheval Blanc. The chef combines French savoir-faire with local flavors and offers an extensive menu that changes regularly. Adjoining the restaurant, Le 1947 Bar with its grand piano features a wine cellar stocked with the most exceptional vintages. An elegant and comfortable Cigar Museum completes this dining experience.
  • The White Restaurant serves around the clock international cuisine with local notes and Maldivian specialties in a casual-chic atmosphere. The venue’s impressive contemporary architecture blends perfectly with the white sand beach and calm turquoise waters. Each morning, an à la carte breakfast is also served here, and it features one of the most extensive menus I’ve ever seen at a resort (complemented by a small continental buffet).
  • The Japanese restaurant Diptyque is inspired by the concept of “live” cooking and the interaction between guests and chefs. Each evening, the dedicated team demonstrates its culinary skills before the diners seated at the counter, inviting them on a delicious journey of discovery. Dinner can be recommended by the chefs or chosen à la carte between Nigiri, Makimono, and Sashimi or specialties such as Gyoza, Tempura, and Dim Sum.
  • Surrounded by the tropical garden and facing the ocean, the resort’s Teppanyaki Restaurant offers culinary showmanship and artistry. Among the menu choices: beef from Japan, yellow-tail, lobsters caught in Maldivian waters, and vegetables from the chef’s own garden.
  • Located over the lagoon’s clear waters, Deelani Restaurant serves inspired dishes drawn from the kitchens of Spain, France and Italy, with notes of Turkey, Greece and Morocco. Throughout the day, homemade ice cream, sorbets and granita are offered in the solarium. In the evening, guests enjoy tapas and fresh seafood prepared Mediterranean style. Mezze, prosciutto, risotto, ossobuco and pizzettas are there to share.
  • Reached by a 5 min ride in a traditional dhoni, the phenomenal Spa Cheval Blanc is located on its own island. A wide range of treatments offered by Guerlain includes two created especially for Cheval Blanc Randheli — the Sun Ritual and the After Diving Experience. Facilities at the spa include four single and two double treatment villas, a Leonor Greyl Hair Spa, a large swimming pool and soothing beach, ideal for those seeking a carefree day of relaxation and pampering. The island’s yoga master invites guests to join individual or group sessions with classes such as Sunrise/Sunset yoga.
  • Cheval Blanc Randheli is designed for holidays with friends or with family. Children are free to enjoy a wide choice of activities in places made just for them, such as Le Carrousel kids’ club with its swimming pool and slide. It also offers experiences that have been tailor-made for children: ghost-crab hunting, an evening Maldivian style, and mini-disco. Le Paddock is a refuge dedicated to teenagers, offering billiards, table football, table tennis, and a multimedia area. Located near the water sports centre, it also offers a wide range of aquatic activities such as the surf simulator and underwater excursions.
  • Near the arrival jetty is a water sport’s center which offers flyboard, hoverboard, wakeboard, water ski, jet ski, kite surf, jet surf, banana boat, tubing, and underwater scooter. For more tranquil experiences, pedal boats, kayaks, paddle boards and windsurfing boards are available.
  • Overlooking the serene turquoise lagoon, the resort’s fitness center offers a range of state-of-the-art equipment by Technogym and a weekly schedule of classes. For a personalized one-on-one training, La Petite Gym, a private coaching room, brings together all the equipment for tailormade workouts with the resort’s personal trainer.
  • Built to U.S. Open and Paris Masters standards, the two tennis courts — one grass, the other hardcourt — are located on their own private island and beckon beginners and professionals alike for a privileged tennis experience. The tennis coach, an internationally recognized and certified professional, has been specially trained by Recreational Tennis Coaching to offer tennis sessions and to adapt to the level and physical condition of each player.
  • The French Art of Hospitality is at the heart of the Cheval Blanc Randheli Maldives’ philosophy. To this end, specialists known as Alchemists imagine and create personalized experiences for the resort’s guests with unparalleled attention to detail, providing indelible memories for all. In each villa, a dedicated Majordome – French word for butler – is available around the clock to ensure that guests’ wishes are fulfilled, whether it is unpacking suitcases, preparing snorkel gear, or providing the kind of attentive actions that bring joy and surprise to daily life. Guided by the Alchemists of Cheval Blanc, guests can enhance their stay by choosing an experience created especially for them.
  • Randheli is managed by Cheval Blanc , a brand owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy). The first of them, Cheval Blanc Courchevel, opened its doors in 2006, and the second, Cheval Blanc Randheli, in the autumn of 2013 in the Maldives. The brand continued its international expansion with the opening of Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France in the Caribbean in October of 2014. La Résidence de la Pinède, acquired in 2016, joined the collection as Cheval Blanc St-Tropez in May 2019. Cheval Blanc Pari opened its doors in the Samaritaine building along the Seine in 2021. The company will soon open another luxury resort, this time in the Seychelles.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • The southern part of Cheval Blanc Randheli’s lagoon is surrounded by a sea wall (to prevent beach erosion). During high tide, most of the sea wall is well hidden under the water surface, but during low tide, the sea wall becomes visible and spoils the view towards the horizon. The villas in this part of the resort (designated as ‘water villas’) have a direct view of the sea wall, which is located quite close to these villas. IMHO, these villas are best avoided and you should opt for a lagoon villa if you prefer an uninterrupted view of the horizon.
  • Since its opening in 2013, Cheval Blanc Randheli deservedly built a reputation as one of the most exclusive hotels in the Maldives. As such, it should come as no surprise that a stay at the resort is astronomically expensive . While some travelers may question the resort’s value for money, keep in mind that this is the Maldives, where travel budgets come to die.
  • Cheval Blanc Randheli is built on a cluster of 6 islands, including four man-built islands . The beach of the main island as well as the beach on the tennis island are the resort’s only natural beaches, featuring powdery white sands and an incredibly blue lagoon. The other islands and beaches are man-made. You don’t really notice the difference with the natural islands at first sight, since the tropical vegetation has matured well and the beaches of the artificial islands have a very natural look. However, you can feel the difference when taking a stroll on the artificial beaches since the sand is little rougher (or less powdery) under the feet compared to the natural beaches.
  • Cheval Blanc Randheli’s overwater villas are tremendously impressive, but their terraces lack privacy . The villas are slightly angled towards one another (due to the curved shoreline) and there are no privacy screens, so it’s quite easy to see what’s happening on the terrace of your neighbors (or even on the terraces of villas further away). The beach villas are not private eather, since their pools and terraces are not hidden from view for other guests walking on the beach.
  • The dress code at Cheval Blanc Randheli isn’t barefoot casual, so shoes and resort-chic attire is required, which matches the resort’s posh ambiance . Also keep in mind that you may want to bring something extra special to wear for dinner at the resort’s signature restaurant, Le 1947.
  • Seaplanes depart from and take off close to Cheval Blanc Randheli’s main island, and, unfortunately they are truly noisy. It means that if you are staying in a villa on or close to the main island, early seaplane departures after sunrise might wake you up. Also, heval Blanc Randheli is not far from Siyam World, the largest resort of the Maldives, with frequent seaplane arrivals and departures throughout the day (causing some noise disturbance from time to time).

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best weather in the Maldives is between January and April, which also means high season (with low availability and sky-rocketing room rates). The monsoon runs from May to October, peaking in June. It is worth paying higher prices and sticking to the dry season as there is nothing to do on a rainy day except drink, eat, work out or scuba dive. Especially November and December, which are often labelled as dry season months, have been very unsettled in recent years.

India’s New High Net Worth Travelers – India Report

Indian travelers are becoming an important source travel market across the world. A new report highlights the preferences of the high net worth traveler base and what they are willing to spend on.

We’ve written a lot about India’s rising middle class – and how they’re set to keep spending more on travel. But now we’re hearing more about India’s high net worth travelers in a new report from Marriott International.

According to the research, culinary experiences are a key driver for Indian travelers. In fact, for them, a hotel’s fine dining options are more important than the property’s location.

India is also driving the trend of exclusive experiences in the Asia Pacific region, the report stated. “Affluent Indian travelers have a deep appreciation for culture, architecture and design and are willing to pay more for VIP access.” 

A significant portion of Indian travelers are planning to spend more on their leisure travel this year, looking at six trips over the course of the year, with an average three-four nights for a short trip and two-three weeks for a long holiday.

Nearly 50% of the Indian travelers are willing to pay more for luxury hotel brands, and wellness within their leisure trips is a priority. 

A full, fast-paced itinerary is also a preference for Indian travelers, the report added.

Key Destinations for Indians: About 70% of these high net worth Indian travelers are planning a trip to Australia, followed by Singapore, where more than 50% of travelers are planning to visit. 

Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Maldives are among other key destinations for Indians in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region. 

A recent report by consulting firm McKinsey and Company said that India is a fast-growing source of outbound tourism. During the 2023-24 financial year, Indians spent about $17 billion on international travel.

Government to Work to Increase Tourism’s GDP Share to 10%

The government will work on increasing the contribution of tourism to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 10% from the current level of just over 6%. 

Tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that India has several verticals of tourism, including culture, nature, wildlife, activity, adventure, and more. 

“We will work on how these verticals of tourism can be further developed, so that, along with increasing the contribution of tourism to the country’s GDP, employment opportunities can also increase,” he said.

Akasa Air Announces Flights to Abu Dhabi

Low-cost Indian airline Akasa Air has announced that it will be commencing flights to Abu Dhabi starting July 11. This will mark the carrier’s fourth international destination. Akasa Air will operate daily direct flights between Mumbai and Abu Dhabi. 

The airline commenced its international operations earlier this year, when it started flying to Doha, and then it expanded its network to include Jeddah and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. It has also been granted flying rights to Kuwait, co-founder Praveen Iyer told Skift in an earlier interview . 

Akasa Air’s comes as there is a significant boost in connectivity between India and the Middle East in response to the rising demand from Indian tourists. Airlines, including IndiGo, Vistara, Etihad Airways, Oman Air, and SalamAir, have launched new routes and increased the frequency of existing flights to cater to the growing number of travelers. 

Ginger Hotels to Double in East, Northeast India in 3-5 Years

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) is planning to double the presence of its Ginger brand in the East and Northeast region of India over the next three to five years, according to executive vice president Deepika Rao. 

The budget hotel brand currently has 11 operational properties in the region, and a pipeline of seven hotels that will open in two to three years. There are over 90 properties in Ginger’s portfolio, of which the East and Northeast region accounts for about 20%.

Ginger’s expansion strategy includes focusing on smaller cities. It is IHCL’s second-largest brand after Taj, and the company is looking to have over 85 operational Ginger hotels by the end of the 2025-26 financial year. 

EaseMyTrip Signs Agreement With Uttar Pradesh to Boost Tourism

Online travel company EaseMyTrip has signed an agreement with the Uttar Pradesh EcoTourism Development Board (UPETDB), which is responsible for executing promotional and tourism activities in the state. 

The collaboration aims to boost promotion and development of tourism in Uttar Pradesh by using EaseMyTrip’s reach and technology to showcase the state’s eco-tourism destinations, the online travel company said. 

EaseMyTrip will also actively promote all registered homestays in Uttar Pradesh on its online portal, as well as curate and market tourism packages showcasing the state’s unexplored destinations, cultural experiences, cuisine, and crafts. 

Air India to Set Up Flying Training Organization in Maharashtra

Full service carrier Air India is planning to set up a Flying Training Organization (FTO) in Maharashtra’s Amravati. This will be South Asia’s largest FTO, the airline said in a statement, and is being established as part of an initiative by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). 

The FTO would train 180 commercial pilots every year after it becomes operational in 2025. 

“The FTO will offer aspiring pilots an opportunity to undergo training with curricula at par with global schools,” said Sunil Bhaskaran, Director, Aviation Academy, Air India.

Coolest Travel Jobs: What It’s Like to Be an Undercover Hotel Inspector

Can you imagine a line of work where “sipping cocktails by the pool” is actually part of your job description? Amanda Smith* can—and for four years, she worked what many would consider a dream job: undercover hotel inspector. The gig involved secretly rating hundreds of high-end hotels, restaurants, and spas all over the world. We caught up with Smith in New York City to ask her about her alter-ego alias, overrated room service, and why inspectors are the world’s lousiest hotel guests.

How exactly does one become a inspector?

“A friend of mine was doing it and told me about the opening. I applied, figuring why not: I love traveling and I love food. The interview process included trial tests. I had to eat breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton in Battery Park , write about the experience, and answer all these questions. They’re looking to see how well you pay attention to detail and if you can blend in and be discreet. That’s when I first realized how detailed and thorough the job was. The company I worked for looks at the entire guest experience from start to finish. For breakfast, let’s say, we begin rating from the minute we make a reservation. We evaluate the host: What are they wearing? How do they address us? Where do they seat us? Can the server describe the dishes on the menu in an easy-to-understand way? Are there vegetarian options? Healthy options? How is the plating? Are the ingredients fresh? Is anything canned? Do they fold my napkin when I get up to use the bathroom? We’ll even time how long our water glass sits empty. The evaluation is as much about the service as it is the food.”

If you’re rating restaurants undercover, you must use an alias to book. So forget Instagramming the meal, right?

“When I started the job, Instagram was just starting to get popular. Twitter was still the thing. Once I accepted the inspector job, I stopped doing social media. It’s a challenge for the company because it’s hard to find people who are knowledgeable but don’t have a following.”

Your alias had her own email account and AmEx card. Did you build a whole character story?

“We made up a lot of stories! [ Laughs ] I said I was a personal brand consultant and that’s why I was traveling all the time. It’s a vague enough profession, when people asked questions, I could say, ‘I can’t really discuss my clients with you.’ And strangers are really inquisitive! Like, why is this girl sitting alone at a fancy bar in the Peninsula on a Friday night? Why is she at an expensive resort by herself? I would make up stories like, ‘Oh, my sister was supposed to come with me but she had to cancel . . .’ or ‘My friend just had a baby, so I’m in town visiting . . .’. Part of our job at the hotels is to test the concierge; I’ve even asked them where to buy baby clothes, just to keep up my story. You have to make up a story and stick with it!”

But when you’re evaluating a hotel, isn’t most of what you have to review on the property itself? Don’t they wonder why you so rarely leave?

“Some hotels are clueless. Others were probably suspicious. I’d always try to leave for a good chunk of time, even if it was just to work in a café.”

Did you ever get caught?

“I only booked restaurants under my fake name because hotels ask for ID. Most high-end restaurants Google their guests, so if I go under my real name, they might see I have a food background. A lot of them know our company is coming, too, so they’re kind of on the lookout. But there were times I was eating a three-hour meal by myself and it obviously looked a little suspicious. I was at a hotel in New York once and the waiter was like, ‘Do you just really like food or something?’ [ Laughs ] I was like, ‘Yeah . . . I do.’ Once you get found out, it’s obvious—everyone is super attentive, you’re sent extra dishes. It’s a horrible feeling. You know they know and they know you know, but no one says anything. You just have to sit there.”

How would a restaurant know someone from your company was coming?

“Most get reviewed at least once a year. The company also has a consulting side, where a property can pay for an inspection to see how they’re doing. Ratings are separate, however, and cannot be bought.”

So let’s say you’re on assignment in the Caribbean. Would you jump around to a bunch of different hotels, restaurants, and spas on one trip or focus on a single place?

“For cost-saving purposes, we would do up to four or five different properties. And because it would be kind of weird to go to a romantic place like the Caribbean by yourself, we were allowed to bring companions. My sister came on one trip and my company paid for her flight and all of her meals; all I had to do was put the reservation under her name. It was a huge perk.”

Your friends and family must’ve been really upset when you left the job.

“They were so sad. [ Laughs ] Just the other day, my sister was like, ‘Don’t you wish you had your old job back? I do !’”

OK, so walk me through a typical assignment. How did it work?

“We would get our schedules about a month ahead of time. We avoided major holidays like Fourth of July and Labor Day, because hotels are already overwhelmed; we want more of an average guest experience. We’d usually book a second-tier room, which is usually a little bigger and nicer than the entry-level room. But if it’s a really big price jump—like 500 euros—we won’t do it. Staying in a suite is not an average guest experience.”

Would you book online?

“We usually book over the phone, so we can call and ask questions about the hotel. Again, we’re evaluating the hotel from the minute we make the reservation until we check out. We cover about 800 separate points. As soon as we get to the hotel, we record the interaction: How soon do they greet us at the door? Do they take our bags? At the reception desk, do they confirm the number of nights we’re staying? Do they offer us a newspaper for the morning? We call this anticipatory service—anticipating what a guest needs before they even ask for it.”

What happens when you get up to the room?

“The first thing we do is take photos of everything : the bed, the bathroom amenities, the curtains, and any damages. We’re not, like, crawling under desks or using a blacklight, but if you’re sitting in bed and you see a giant crack in the ceiling or scuff marks all over the place, that’s not great. After the room survey, I’d usually go to the gym. Do they have towels and water? What is the condition of the exercise machines? Is there someone there to help you?”

You’re actually exercising or just poking your head in?

“No, we’re exercising. We’d do 30 or 40 minutes and try different machines, make sure they all work. It’s funny: You’re working out like a normal guest but also writing down notes on your phone. I’d pretend I was texting someone and even make faces like I was reacting to a text message while I was really typing notes. [ Laughs ] It sounds crazy.”

What comes after the gym?

“I would usually go to the hotel bar but set up the room for turndown service. To test housekeeping, I would unfold clothes to see if they’d fold them, scatter shoes to see if they’d pair them, and leave towels on the floor. I’d pretend I took a nap on the bed by jumping in, moving the covers around, and putting dents in the pillows. I’d crumble food around and spill things just to see if they vacuumed and wiped it up.”

You were basically a jerk guest.

“Yeah, and I always felt really bad! Inspectors are the worst kind of guests. So anyway, after I set up the room for turndown service, I’d go to the bar and ask questions about the wine list. I’d do a deep look at how many cocktails they offer, do they use fresh ingredients, how is the presentation, how long does it take them to make the cocktails, and so on. We even look at the snacks. Most high-end hotel bars give you at least two premium snacks—like house-marinated olives or thick-cut potato chips with some kind of cool salt.”

Since you were usually at the bar alone, did people try to hit on you?

“Yes! It’s very uncomfortable. I’d usually sit at a table or bring a magazine or book, because I didn’t want to invite conversation. But that doesn’t stop people. Men would sit down at the table with me. And I’m undercover, so I can’t be like, ‘This is my job, get out of here!’”

Did you wear a fake wedding band?

“I did. I would try to look busy, but it’s hard. If you give off a really cold, mean Resting Bitch Face vibe, the staff won’t talk to you—and I need them to check up on me!”

After the bar inspection, do you go back to the room to see how housekeeping did with the turndown service?

“Yes, exactly. If it’s my first night at a hotel, I might order room service—I need to see how long it takes to arrive and what the table setup is like. I feel like everyone loves room service, but on the whole it’s not usually fantastic. Most of the time I dreaded it.”

When things go awry during an inspection—say, you spot a cockroach on the breakfast buffet—how do you handle it?

“I once had a rat run across the dining room when I was eating outside—it wasn’t the hotel’s fault, but no one wants to see a big rat run by dinner. What I do is stay as calm as possible and not make a scene. Inspectors never want to be memorable. In the case of a cockroach on the breakfast buffet, I wouldn’t do anything on the spot, but I would put it in my notes and take it into account when writing up the report.”

It’s interesting that you wouldn’t tell a manager about the problem and then evaluate how they handle it.

“It’s tricky. I had a situation where my hotel room smelled like vomit. Any normal guest would have complained, but I can’t risk being remembered. We had other ways to test how managers handled difficult situations. For example, if something in the room was broken, we would see how long it’d take to get fixed. Or if a concierge couldn’t get us into a restaurant, do they say ‘We’re really sorry; let’s get you in somewhere else.’ But we could never be the Angry Guest.”

Would you make a point to look at TripAdvisor reviews in advance of visiting a hotel, just to see what other guests did and didn’t like?

“I usually looked after I went. I never wanted to go in somewhere with a preconceived idea of whether or not I would like it. The whole TripAdvisor thing is really hard now, too; people think they have the power to destroy a hotel. But in looking at reviews after the fact, I agreed with a lot of the negative comments.”

Let’s go back to the hotel breakfast. Hopefully there are no roaches. What are you evaluating?

“Breakfast would usually take 45 minutes to write up; it’s very detailed. I’d order coffee to see how long it took to come out. Then I’d evaluate the buffet: Is everything labeled? Is the juice half empty? What is the quality of the berries? Does the oatmeal look congealed? Are dishes piled up? Are the spoons coated in eggs and gross-looking? After breakfast, I’d usually go back to the room and work for a bit, or head down to the pool. We’d get drinks and test out the scene. If there was no pool, I might test the concierge.”

Tell me about the hotel spa reviews.

“The spas were amazing—such a nice perk. We always did either a body or facial treatment, plus a manicure or pedicure. Sometimes I’d have three spa sessions in a week and they’d ask ‘When was the last time you had a massage?’ I couldn’t say, ‘Oh, yesterday.’ [ Laughs ] If I’d just had a pedicure and needed to get another, I’d literally scrape my toenails on the cement outside, just to mess them up. I felt so bad destroying a $100 pedicure.”

Most of the places you covered are pretty expensive. Did you have to front the money?

“Yes. We put it on our credit cards and were later reimbursed. There were some months when I had a $30,000 credit card bill! But we got to keep the points, which was great.”

Let’s play a quick-fire round of highlights. I’ll throw out a category and you tell me the first place that comes to mind. Best pool?

“ Hotel Fasano in Rio de Janeiro. It overlooked Ipanema and was so stunning. But, oh! There’s also Ladera Resort in St. Lucia. It was a three-walled room with a private plunge pool. I saw a rainbow one time that went between the two Pitons—like, wow . So memorable.”

Best hotel bar or best cocktail?

“ The Lanesborough in London used to serve this amazing Old Fashioned with coffee beans. They took it off the menu, but the bar itself is beautiful—like an old-school library—and snacks are served on a tiered tray.”

The coolest surprise in a turndown service?

“ St. Julien in Boulder, Colorado, gives you homemade chocolate-covered Oreos. They are so good. I stopped the turndown attendant once and was like, ‘Can I please have more?’”

You mentioned disappointing room service. When was a time that it wasn’t?

“ Sandy Lane in Barbados had really great room service: good quality food, lovely presentation.”

The grandest lobby?

“ The Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris for its flower display. It’s a work of living art.”

Best shower?

“The Opposite House in Beijing. It feels like an indoor outdoor shower. The floors are wood, one of the walls is a stone slab, and the whole top of the ceiling is the shower. It rains down as if the heavens opened. I’m obsessed.”

Tell me about a time a concierge blew your mind.

“I was in Paris once when my sister, who speaks French, asked me to pick up this book. I went to the concierge at the Peninsula and asked if he could tell me a bookstore nearby where I could find it. The concierge calls the bookstore, puts a request in, sends one of the bellmen over to pick up the book, and then just charges it to my room. My jaw dropped. It was unbelievable service.”

What’s one hotel that was so good, you would pay out-of-pocket just to visit it again?

“ The Dolder Grand in Zurich. The spa was unbelievable: They had an outdoor whirlpool and an ice room with actual ice in it. The property was beautiful, the rooms were new, and the service was fantastic.”

This sounds like a dream job on so many levels. What are the downsides?

“The travel really wears on you; sometimes I’d be gone three weeks a month. You’re constantly packing, unpacking, repacking. And it gets lonely. You miss birthday parties, anniversaries. It’s hard to lead a normal life.”

Now that you’re off the inspector beat, are you able to take a normal vacation?

“Yes! I went to the Miami Beach Edition with my sister and it was so nice to just relax and enjoy it.”

But can you ever really turn off an inspector brain? Or do you still notice, like, how the towels are folded?

“I still notice. Once you know the rules, it’s hard to stop thinking about them. But it makes me happy when a hotel does well. I’m always tempted to go to the front desk and say, ‘I used to be a hotel inspector. . . . You did good!’”
