Bike Tours in Rome
Rome is a city that is best explored on two wheels. Although there are a lot of possibilities for different tours , biking through Rome allows you to experience the city from a unique perspective while also getting some exercise and fresh air. In this article, we will explore the benefits of bike tours in Rome, what to look for when choosing a tour, popular bike routes, bike rental services, safety rules, and tips for a great biking tour experience.
Is Rome Good for Biking?
Rome is a city full of people and tourists and has a lot of traffic. Biking through Rome allows you to experience the city uniquely, seeing every inch of it.
The city has many bike lanes and dedicated bike paths, which make it a safe and enjoyable place to bike. You can go out around the city on your own or find the right tour operator who will help you experience the city in a fun and memorable way.
Understanding Bike Tours in Rome
Bike tours are an excellent way to explore Rome. Bike tours are available in different types, including guided, self-guided, by day, and by night.
- Guided bike tours are led by experienced tour guides who will take you to some of the city’s most famous landmarks while giving you details on all the historic monuments.
- Self-guided bike tours allow you to explore the city at your own pace. I would recommend this if you’re looking to explore the beauty of the monuments and take in the essence of the city rather than its history.
- By day, bike tours are perfect for those who want to explore the city during the day; although it can get hot and crowded, I would save this for bike routes and tours outside the city.
- Night bike tours are ideal for those who want to see the city’s landmarks lit up at night. In my personal experience, every monument is different during the day and night. If you can’t go on a tour at night, I recommend a short bike ride or even a walk around the center.
Getting a Hold of a Bike
If you are doing a self-guided tour:
- Rent a bike from any of the bike shops (All around town) or stands (these can be found around Villa Borghese).
- Use apps like Lime, dott, Helbiz, etc. They have different types of passes for the day or the week and are all electric.
With a Tour Operator
- They will provide you with a bike according to your needs (mountain, electric, regular, etc.)
Benefits of Bike Tours
Bike tours in Rome offer several benefits.
First, they allow you to obtain a unique perspective of the city. You will be able to explore and get lost in the small streets of Rome, something impossible to do by taxi or bus .
Secondly, you can explore the city in a way that is safe and enjoyable and, at the same time, try a new experience.
Third, and in my opinion, the best, are the small streets you can cut through and save time. All the monuments are close to each other, so if you take the right turns, you should be able to get from one place to another in no time. We also can’t forget the fact that you can exercise while exploring the city.
What to Look for When Picking the Best Tour
When choosing a bike tour in Rome, look for the following things:
- The reputation of the tour operator
- The length of the tour: Bike tours can last a few hours or all day; it’s up to you.
- The price of the tour: Make sure it’s worth what you’re paying.
- The level of difficulty of the tour: There are many steep hills; be careful with the sights you’re visiting and their location.
- The landmarks that will be visited
- The type of bike that will be used: I recommend an electric bike or a mountain bike.
- Reviews and experiences from previous visitors: Check online
- Popular bike routes in Rome; look at some of them here.
Popular Bike Routes in Rome
The Appian Way (Via dell’Appia Antica), the Aurelian Walls, and the Tiber River
- The Appian Way is a historic road that goes from Rome to the south of Italy. It is a popular bike route because it offers scenic views of the countryside and the Acquedotto. There is limited car circulation, so this is a great place to explore and ride freely.
- The Aurelian Walls are a series of walls built around Rome in the 3rd century AD. They are a popular bike route because they offer a unique perspective on the city’s history.
- The Tiber River is also a popular bike route because it offers scenic views of the city and is relatively flat, but it is sometimes flooded or full of mud, especially during rainy days.
- There are other bike lanes around the city to get from one historic monument to another; most have been added in recent years, so they’re in great condition.
Lesser-Known Routes
There are several lesser-known bike routes in Rome that are worth exploring.
These include the Janiculum Hill (steep and full of uphill streets), the Catacombs , and Ostia Antica .
Janiculum Hill is a scenic hill that offers panoramic views of the city. The Catacombs are a series of underground tunnels used as burial sites in ancient Rome. Ostia Antica is an ancient Roman city that is located outside of Rome.
Can You Cycle in The Vatican?
Cycling is not permitted in the Vatican . The Vatican is a small city-state home to several important landmarks, including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel . Due to the large crowds of tourists and the narrow streets, cycling is not allowed in the Vatican. You can explore the Vatican on foot or by taking a guided tour. You can also bike around the outside if you’re just looking to get a nice view of St. Peter’s.
Safety Rules for Biking in Rome
- Stay in designated bike lanes when available.
- Be aware of pedestrians and other cyclists.
- Avoid biking during rush hour; Romans can be aggressive drivers.
What to Carry and How to Navigate Rome’s Streets
There are a few factors to consider when deciding what to bring. Are you cycling alone? Are you going to be in the city or on the outside? And a few others. These are my basics when I go bike riding:
- Carry a map, GPS, or your phone to get around the city’s streets, especially if you’re biking on your own.
- Bring a water bottle.
- Don’t fill your bag with snacks unless you’re going on routes outside of the city.
- Wear sunscreen, especially as the city can get hot during the summer months
- Bring a lock to secure the bike when parked; some rental places already have them.
- I recommend renting an electric bike, especially in the summer. Rome has a bunch of hills, and in the heat, you’re sure to regret your decision if you get a regular bike. Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular in Rome. They are perfect for those who want to explore the city at their own pace without getting too tired.
- Choose a tour that fits their interests and fitness level.
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and dress in layers if it’s a bit cold because you will get hot for sure.
- Don’t limit yourself to the city center. Bike around the Appian Road ; it has beautiful sights and limited vehicle circulation. I can assure you that all paths will leave you at a loss for words.
- Bring a water bottle with you. Rome has many fountains where you can stop for a refill of your water, or you can even drink directly from the fountain if you want to avoid bringing a bottle.

11 – Small Group E-Bike Tour
Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 72 reviews )
“Very nice guide with a lot of knowledge. would we do it again Highly Recommended.” Svenja, Getyourguide
Imagine cruising along Rome’s cobbled lanes with a private guide and only company you choose. Coast to a stop in front of the Trevi Fountain and St Peter’s Basilica as your guide retells the story of these eminent locales. Small-group private e-bike tours get you to premier spots in Rome easily and in a short period of time.
This is hands-down one of the most highly-rated bike tours in Rome. The combination of stellar guides, comfortable bikes and affordability for a private tour garners abundant five-star reviews.
12 – Rome Highlights by E-Bicycle
Rating: ⭐️ 5/5 ( 308 reviews )
“Awesome experience with friendly and knowledgeable guide. Definitely one of the best tours that we have done in Europe, great value and a lot of fun.” James, Viator
If you want the luxuries of a private tour but don’t want to part with too many Euros, a Rome highlights by e-bicycle tour can be an ideal choice for you. In groups no larger than eight people, your guides will whisk you to Rome’s main draws like the Pantheon and the Roman Forum as well as hidden surprises.
This is a choice tour for people wanting to see corners of Rome not often seen by holidaymakers. Guides speak excellent English and make travelers’ safety their highest priority.

Our E-Bike Tours in Rome
Sorry, no products match your filters..
Inspired by a genuine love for cycling and a true passion for this incredible city, for over 17 years Top bike has been offering unique ways to experience Rome's cultural, historical and natural riches. In all these years, our formula for the perfect Rome bike tour hasn't budged: a fascination to share, top-notch bicycle equipment , uncompromising safety-conscious guide training and a never-ending itinerary research.
When you are searching for the best bike tours in Rome, Top bike has a wide variety of options available throughout the year. For those who want to fully experience the heart of the city, we designed three great E bike tours in Rome. If you have half a day to spend, our 4-hour City Center Highlights tour can be the ideal introduction to many must-see sites in the historic center . From the Colosseum to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, this rather short ride will be a concatenation of jaw dropping moments.
To make the most out of these relatively brief Rome bicycle tours, we recommend you to join us just after arriving in the city. Not only will the ride help you map out this central area of the city , but through our guide's explanations, you will also benefit from a general historical framework which could be useful for any further discoveries you will make in the upcoming days of your stay.
Full Day Electric Bike Tour Rome: Italy at its best
If you can't wait to indulge in a full city experience and you are searching for a Rome E Bike tour that covers all the highlights, including the Saint Peter Basilica and Castel Sant'Angelo, we present to you the 7-hour Rome in a Day tour . Our city is rather hilly, so you will appreciate pedalling on two wheels with an electric motor - especially in the summer months! Moreover, this activity includes a lunch in an Italian trattoria , which makes it quite the typical Italian experience.
A different yet extraordinary Rome electric bike tour
If you're after a splendid E bike tour in Rome, we have even more to offer besides the formidable historic center. Are you ready for an epic off-the-beaten-path ride, away from the vibrant city, plunging in nature and surrounding yourself with incredible historic structures? If your heart starts beating a little faster as you read this, our Ancient Appian Way, Catacombs and Park of the Aqueducts tour is the perfect solution for you: a ride that has been rated by our guests as one of the best bike tours Rome can offer. Gear-up and pedal on our tough tires on one of the most important Roman roads, towards the stunning Ancient Aqueducts. The 6-hour version of this excursion includes a visit of the famous catacombs of St. Callixtus or St. Sebastian. In this 27-km (17-mile) bike trip we explore the history- and landscape- rich countryside of Rome , riding predominantly on off-road surfaces including unpaved roads and dirt paths. For this reason we rate the ride as intermediate in difficulty, but rest assured: this E bike tour of Rome is perfectly doable for anyone who can confidently ride a bicycle! As on all our Rome bike tours, here too we chose all the safest and easiest route options available (including bicycle lanes where possible). And if the length of the ride troubles you, fear not: an Electric-assist bicycle is included by default !
Panoramically photogenic: possibly one of the best bike tours in Rome
We tailored our Panoramic Tour especially for travelers who adore scenic views . On all of our Rome Bike Tours the camera could potentially shoot overtime, but this excursion tops all others in the photographic opportunities it offers. If you like to see the city at large and gaze at the hills, iconic structures and domes from a higher ground, this may be the Rome E-Bike Tour for you. Discover how photogenic the "Eternal City" can be from a birds-eye perspective. Spin with one of our skillful guides up to the roof of the city (Janiculum hill) , to find out that this is one of those bike tours Rome looks different through, but spectacular for sure! After the pleasant downhill ride you can rest your wheels on the kickstand to marvel at the vast Saint Peter Square.
Why cycling in Italy? (and two alternative bicycle experiences)
One of the reasons travelers choose La Bella Italia is the abundance of beautiful seas, cities and scenic countryside . An electric bike tour in Rome is a great opportunity to discover the remarkable fusion of history, nature and modern-day life. A bicycle tour of Rome will boost your imagination and make history come alive through the explanations of our guides. For our guests with different scenic wishes, we suggest two special day tours outside of Rome. For those who have experienced the capital several times already, we developed the Appia Antica and Castel Gandolfo with Lunch - an outstanding ride to Castel Gandolfo (the Summer residence of the Pope) and Lake Albano (a small but deep lake of volcanic origin). On this trip, we ride on the green banks of the lake and enjoy a voluptuous Italian lunch there, before pedaling back the complete surviving stretch of the Ancient Appian Way, slightly downhill. The second option, Alviano, Bagnoregio and Orvieto with Wine Tasting is a picturesque countryside ride towards two famous medieval hilltop towns: Civita di Bagnoregio and Orvieto . You will be impressed!
Please contact us for detailed information about one of these day trips.
How safe are you on a Rome bike tour with us?
A bicycle tour in Rome with us is as safe as it gets! While the city slowly improves its cycling infrastructure, we have designed carefully planned routes combining traffic-free sections with stretches of limited traffic. Above all, our expert, safety-conscious local guides are determined to put you at ease, because safety is our top priority . Each and every Rome Bike Tour includes a safety helmet for everyone and a bottle of water to make sure you stay hydrated throughout the ride. The Italian capital is full of hidden gems. However, reaching them across smooth cycling surface isn't always simple or even possible. This is why quality equipment from world-renowned brand Cannondale, solid bike components and thorough and regular bicycle maintenance can make or break a cycling experience in the Eternal city. Our Top Bike mechanics know this best: all our bikes are checked after every single use in order to have components perfectly tweaked or, if necessary, replaced. Riding with children is also a familiar sight, so we are prepared: we have a wide variety of child-seats, tag-alongs and children's bicycles available. All our Rome bicycle tours are a priceless experience for children too!
How hard is the ride? Find out on an electric bike tour: Rome will be defeated
Our Rome bike tours are marked as of either easy or intermediate level , depending on whether they run prevalently on a smooth surface or predominantly off-road. The smoothness of the ride is enhanced by the fact that we pedal with an electric bike. Rome is rather hilly, but don't let that put you off: it never has been easier to conquer than on an E-Bike!
What do you see on our Rome bicycle tours?

Nevertheless, every tour we offer in or outside the city walls, is ranked at the top of outdoor activities across various public review platforms . Bike About tours are a great way for families to experience the Rome landscape together, and we know kids will love our cool bikes and fun guides. We are also offering special Family Tours, which are especially designed for families traveling together. If you have children younger than age 10, please do us a favor and let us know by email.
Do we go inside the museums and monuments?
Be aware that we do not enter monuments or sights due to time restrictions, waiting lines, closing days and entrance tickets. Our bike tours do take you to all the sights, but there are so many that we can only give you an overview. If you want to take a closer look inside e.g. the Colosseum or Roman Forum, please do plan another visit there.

We strongly recommend to make a reservation, especially if you are traveling with children or a large group so that we can have the necessary number of bikes and guides prepared. We give priority to our reserved guests and may not be able to accommodate walk-ins.
Do we provide helmets?
Yes – legally you are not obliged to wear a helmet, but we provide helmets for those that would like to wear one. For Kids or teenagers under 18 years it is mandatory to wear a helmet for their own safety

Ride through Roman history
While the center of Rome bristles with Roman ruins and awesome artifacts, just outside the city lie the feats of ancient engineering and monumental roads that made this bastion of civilization possible. This bike tour begins in Rome before traversing the ancient route of the Appian Way, with stops at the Regional Park of Appia Antica, the Catacombs of Callixtus, or the Aqueducts en route, allowing you to cycle through history on an immersive, engaging, and family-friendly day tour.
Your bicycle tour begins close to the center of Rome before joining the ancient route of the Appian Way, one of the earliest and most important roads in the Roman Empire. This ancient route dates to 312 BC, and winds its way to Brindisi, in the very south of Italy. As you cycle along a portion of it, your guide’s vivid descriptions and engaging historical narratives will bring to life visions of the soldiers, senators, and emperors who walked this path millennia ago.
Cycling on, you’ll reach the Regional Park of Appia Antica. As the second-largest urban park in Europe, there’s no better way to traverse the vast landscapes and spot the myriad tombs, monuments, and villas that are dotted throughout than by bike tour. Now, choose between a visit to the Catacomb of Callixtus or the Roman Aqueducts.
If you choose the first option, your guided tour will stop at one of the most notable sightseeing landmarks along the course of this road: the Catacomb of Callixtus. This catacomb is famous for housing the Crypt of the Popes, which once contained the crypts of several Popes buried between the 2nd and 4th centuries. An adjoining crypt once housed the remains of Saint Cecilia, making this bike tour stop an essential sightseeing opportunity for anyone interested in Rome’s rich religious history.
Alternatively, your guide will lead you to the monumental ancient structures of the Roman Aqueducts. These towering constructions splice through the rolling hills of the park, standing as legacies of the Romans’ ingenuity and mastery of engineering. Your route will take you to monuments such as the Aqua Felix and Aqua Claudia, two of Ancient Rome’s most vital water sources, as well as Villa delle Vignacce, a ruined villa from the 2nd century AD.
Cycle out of the center of Rome and enter into the rich religious history and ingenious engineering legacies that lie at the very heart of Roman history. This bicycle tour is sure to be a riveting ride through Roman history for the whole family!

Along the way, marvel at nature's power as you bike through Parco della Caffarella and admire the moss-covered Egeria's Nymphaeum, and take a moment to snap iconic shots of the impressive Parco degli Acquedotti.
With the power of a high-quality e-bike, you'll have plenty of energy to continue your tour to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella and alongside the Circus of Maxentius. Then, pass by the grand and well-preserved Baths of Caracalla before ending your tour back at the designated meeting point.

Bike through Parco della Caffarella and Parco degli Acquedotti

Hop On at St. Sebastian Gate
Your exciting Appian Way e-bike tour adventure starts close to the Colosseum, where you'll connect with your expert tour guide and fellow adventurers and get fitted to your high-quality e-bike. Then, after a brief lesson on the ins and outs of using your bike, your friendly guide will give you an overview of your route –and off you go!
The first highlight of your journey is Porta San Sebastiano (St. Sebastian Gate), one of the largest and best-preserved gates in the Aurelian Wall and the starting point for your Appian Way cycle tour.
Cycle Through Parco della Caffarella and Egeria's Nymphaeum
Now that everyone is comfortable navigating on two wheels, you’ll make your way into the expansive Parco della Caffarella (Caffarella Park), a part of the larger Parco dell’Appia Antica. Here, nature, history, and archaeology coexist in a beautiful blend, and you’ll get to admire all three as you cycle past the moss-covered walls of Ninfeo di Egeria (Egeria's Nymphaeum), an ancient Roman monument that’s believed to be a sacred space dedicated to the water nymph, Egeria.
Explore Parco degli Acquedotti and Villa dei Quintili
Your journey then continues to the Parco degli Acquedotti (Aqueduct Park), also part of the larger Parco dell’Appia Antica and named after the impressive aqueducts that run through it. Stop for a close-up view of these remarkable feats of ancient engineering and listen as your guide shares fascinating details about Rome's water supply history. Not far off, you'll pass by Villa dei Quintili, once a luxurious countryside mansion owned by Emperor Commodus that’s still a sight to see today.
A Grand Finale of Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, Circus of Maxentius, and Baths of Caracalla
While your e-bike tour along the Appian Way may be coming to an end, there’s still plenty more to admire on your last few miles. Pass by the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, an impressive structure built in honor of Cecilia Metella, and the Circus of Maxentius, an ancient chariot racing stadium dating back to the 4th century. Then, ride alongside the Terme di Caracalla (Baths of Caracalla), one of the greatest and best-preserved bath complexes of antiquity, before ending your tour and saying a proper Italian ‘ciao’ to your friendly guide and newfound friends!

Fun and interesting
Veronica was a helpful, friendly and organized guide. She took her time leading our small group and provided regular stops with interesting information. The four hour ride was through lovely countryside and along interesting bike trails. The e-bikes were well maintained and appreciated on some of the more challenging parts of the ride. Highly recommended
Wednesday’s forUnrushed, informative, and refreshing
Iman gave us the most enchanting tour on a Wednesday. Every other day of the week this tour simply rides by the Catacombs but they are closes on Wednesday. The upside that our group tour was so small that it was only us! This gave time and flexibility to stop, gaze, discuss, and absorb the beautiful relief from the city. As a history major, Iman, our tour guide was excited and knowledgeable.
Best day in Rome
Appian way bike tour is a must. Our guide Ricardo was charismatic and made the trip fun and stopped many times along the way to explain the history as well as let us take pictures and rest. Great way to get out of the hussle and bussel of Rome and enjoy the parks. Highly recommend.
