Best Time to Visit Agra

Taj Mahal in Winter

The best time to visit Agra, famed for the breathtaking Taj Mahal, is during the winter months, roughly from October to March. Agra experiences extreme temperatures. The winter months offer mild and pleasant weather, with daytime temperatures ranging between 25°C and 12°C (77°F and 54°F). This makes exploring the city and its landmarks, especially the Taj Mahal, more comfortable without the scorching heat of summer or the humidity of the monsoon season.

The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, looks particularly stunning in the winter light. The cooler temperatures also make sunrise and sunset visits more enjoyable, providing breathtaking views of the monument in the soft, golden light. The favorable weather allows for comfortable exploration of other historical sites like Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, and Itimad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb without the discomfort of extreme heat or rain.

Keep in mind that, while winter is generally the best time to visit Agra, it’s also the peak tourist season, so booking accommodations and tickets in advance is advisable. Also, early morning or late afternoon visits to the Taj Mahal often offer the best lighting and fewer crowds for a more serene experience.

Agra In Summer (April to July)

Agra is situated on the plains of Indo-Ganges in a subtropical area. As a result, the summer is long and scorching, lasting from April until the end of July. The temperature can reach 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) during this time of year. The wind that blows in the summer is called loo. Loo is arid and might cause discomfort in the heat. Summer is the best time to get a good price on hotel bills and to avoid crowds. Remember to bring along some lightweight clothing.

Agra In Monsoon (July–September)

Typically, the monsoon begins near the end of July. However, on occasion, the monsoon is postponed until the beginning of August and concludes by the end of September. The monsoon season brings with it chilly nights and a slightly humid atmosphere. You can enjoy a rainy Agra if you’d like, as the monsoon season won’t be overly damp.

Agra In winter (October–March),

For many people, the main reason why winter is the best time to visit Agra is Agra’s climate in winter. The heat and rain gradually subside, and a pleasant coolness spreads over the city. At the peak of winter, the temperature drops; in some cases, it drops to 2 degrees Celsius. Average winter temperatures range from 8 to 14 °C. Although you may be hampered by the thick fog that envelops Agra in winter, this is the best time to explore the city.

In Agra, winter is a wonderland. There are several celebrations to go to. The Taj Mahotsav is the most well-known. This 10-day celebration takes place every year in February, near the Taj Mahal. You can take in and purchase beautiful handicrafts created by regional artisans, as well as take in folk and ghazal performances, delicious food, and cultural events. October to November are when the Bateshwar Fair takes place. This town is located 70 kilometers from Agra and is home to over 108 temples; however, Lord Shiva is the focus of this celebration. Swim in Yamuna’s sacred waters and see the cattle market and livestock. If you don’t feel like traveling, there are festivities in Agra. The Ram Bharat is another highlight of this season. This is one of the special occasions for Hindus: the marriage procession of Lord Rama, which many devotees come to see in Agra from different parts of cities and towns.

One Day in Agra Itinerary – Top things to do in Agra, India

Agra is a famous tourist destination in India and home to the majestic Taj Mahal. It was the capital of Mughal emperors, a status that was later passed on to Delhi. But Taj Mahal is not the sole reason to visit Agra, though, as the city has many other exciting places you can (and should) visit like the Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and two UNESCO World Heritage sites. Tourists usually take up a small trip to Agra from Delhi. It seems too inadequate to visit Agra in just one day, but if planned correctly you can visit all the major attractions. Agra is a historical city and, as mentioned, one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal, is present here. So, one day in Agra will certainly give you plenty to do.

When is the Best Time to Visit Agra?

  • Agra Hotel & Neighborhood Map

The Taj Mahal with a large crowd of tourists in front of it.

The Taj Mahal in Agra, India. The best months to visit Agra are March, October, and November.

  • Best Time for Sightseeing : Ideally, avoid 3 weather factors: (1) the heat (April, May, and June), made worse by factory pollution and traffic fumes; (2) the wet (mid-June to September), which may temporarily flood roads and railway tracks; and (3) the fog (December to February), which sometimes affects plane and train travel and can obstruct views of the Taj. Therefore, the best months for sightseeing are March, October, and November.
  • Best Time for Weather : October to March is the cool and dry winter when rain is negligible and temperatures are low – even cold, certainly overnight. Fog can be problematic, however, from December to February, possibly affecting Taj views and travel plans, while a lower-level version of the sort of pollution haze found in Delhi can be unpleasant during these 3 months.
  • Best Time for Honeymoons : March, October, and November. These months avoid the hottest and wettest parts of the year and the cooler months when fog is common.
  • Best Time for Nightlife : October to mid-June. When the weather is either dry and cool or dry and hot – either way, it avoids the wet season.
  • Best Time for Saving Money : April to September. The peaks times for crowds at the Taj Mahal, and increased hotel rates and airfares, are the cooler and drier months, whereas April to September is always hot and, later, often wet.

Agra Travel Seasons

  • High Season (December to February) : Understandably, the cool days (which can still be chilly at midday) and cold nights attract more tourists than the hot and wet seasons. However, fog can disrupt plane and train travel, and the pollution haze can be unpleasant. Agra is especially busy during Christmas/New Year, when pre-booking accommodations and train/plane tickets is recommended.
  • Shoulder Season (March, October, and November) : These months avoid the heat (when temperatures soar), rains, and surprisingly cold and foggy winter during the peak season. Days – and most nights, too – are pleasantly warm, rather than hot and humid. With no fog or pollution haze, and fewer tourists, it’s an ideal time.
  • Low Season (April to September) : By late March, even the locals start feeling the heat as temperatures quickly hit 40°C for 3 months in the lead up to the rainy season. During the monsoon, the streets are cleaner and gardens lush, but water-logging of roads is not uncommon and travel plans may be disrupted.

Agra Weather by Month

  • Agra Weather in January : The cool and dry winter continues in stark contrast to the heat and rain later on. Fog can cause delays for trains and planes, and the regular pollution haze may be uncomfortable for some. Average daytime temperatures are a pleasant 21°C, but a very chilly 7°C overnight. Also, a busy month due to the Christmas/New Year vacation crowds.
  • Agra Weather in February : More cool and dry days but the frequent fog and occasional pollution haze starts to lift. Marked rise in average temperatures to a pleasant 26°C during the day but still a cool 10°C overnight.
  • Agra Weather in March : Average temperatures continue to rise as the hot season looms – quickly up to about 32°C but still coolish overnight at about 15°C. Dry, with no rain for this month, and virtually nothing since October.
  • Agra Weather in April : Official start of the hot season. Average daytime temperatures rise by several degrees to an unpleasant 38°C and overnight to about 21°C. Start of the build-up to the upcoming monsoon but no negligible rain yet. The humidity can be uncomfortable and thunderstorms are not unusual.
  • Agra Weather in May : The humidity increases and so, too, the chances of thunderstorms. This is the hottest month on average, peaking at 41°C and beyond quickly in the morning, and dropping to only 26°C after dark.
  • Agra Weather in June : Another very uncomfortable month; in fact, the year’s hottest on average, and still 28°C overnight. The oppressive heat is tempered slightly as some rain falls, albeit modestly, and there’s a slight drop in humidity.
  • Agra Weather in July : Official start of the monsoon, but rain doesn’t fall by the bucket load (like Mumbai) and the climate doesn’t attract cyclones (like Kolkata). Second-wettest month, so water-logging is possible in areas with poor drainage – even sidewalks outside 5-star resorts.
  • Agra Weather in August : Highest rainfall for the year as average temperatures drop to 34°C but still hover at 26°C overnight. Water-logging may submerge roads and railway tracks, but the rain is not as disruptive as other Indian cities. Humidity is still a factor, though not as unpleasant as the few months before.
  • Agra Weather in September : Daytime temperatures remain stable at about 34°C on average. There’s still some rain, but less than the previous 2 months, while flooded streets and railway tracks are possibly at their worst after several months of downpours. Later in the month, the overnight temperatures drop and the rainfall subsides.
  • Agra Weather in October : One of the best months for travel as the wet season should have finished. Fields are green and lush and the air clean and fresh. Daytime temperatures still average about 34°C but it’s far less humid and markedly cooler at night: about 18°C, which can be a little chilly for those not used to it.
  • Agra Weather in November : The official start of the cool and dry winter – 4 months of pleasant weather ideal for traveling. Average daytime temperatures drop to a pleasant 29°C and even as low as 12°C at night, so pack a jacket.
  • Agra Weather in December : Second-coldest month on average after January: a pleasant 23°C during the day (which even locals complain about) and, at night, a chilly 8°C (which everyone complains about). Fog can cause delays for trains and planes as wind sources move from the desert to the mountains, so dress accordingly.

Agra Travel Guide | The Best of Agra Beyond the Taj

Agra needs no introduction to most visitors to India, but there is plenty to see beyond the Taj – read my Agra travel guide for all my top Agra travel tips for getting the most out of your time here, enjoying your stay, and discovering the best of Agra beyond the Taj (and crowds!)

Agra Travel Guide – An Introduction

If there’s one place in India that every traveller eventually makes it to, it has to be Agra.

For some – it’s the highlight of a long awaited India trip. For others, it’s with more reluctance or version of I can’t really leave India without seeing the Taj kind of sentiment.

My own story with Agra was fairly simple. Having seen the major tourist sights in Agra on my early trips to India – and witnessed a fair amount of the over-tourism and hassle, I wasn’t really in any hurry to return. It’s not for nothing that Agra has something of a bad reputation among tourists to India for the number of touts and scams that prevail(ed) here.

That was until I came across Ekaa Villa in Agra and their work to show visitors a different side of Agra – one with fewer crowds, less focus on the Taj Mahal, and more focus on culture, community-centric tourism. Reason enough to tempt me back to see how Agra had changed over the years, as a result of the Pandemic, and to find out if my opinion of Agra would fare better a few years on (spoiler – it did)!

In this Agra travel blog I’ll cover where to visit, my top travel tips for visiting Agra, advice for female travellers and much more – read on for what you need to know while planning your trip to Agra!

The Best Time to Visit Agra

Set in the heart of northern-central India, Agra sees similar weather to Delhi, but with more variation in heat and cold. At time of writing this blog in May, temperatures in Agra are up to almost 50 degrees celsius at the height of summer, as India is experiencing a heat wave. Suffice to say, I do not recommend visiting Agra in April, May or June as these are when temperatures soar.

The most popular (and best weather-wise) time to visit Agra is between late October and early March. In December & January, Agra gets cold (as in you’ll need a coat cold) and this is when Agra also sees a lot of morning fog. For ideal misty morning Taj viewing conditions, you want both sun and morning mist (seeing the mist rising and evaporating over the Taj is something quite special), which can be more likely to happen with warmer weather in February than in January, when the mist can hang about.

Visiting Agra in monsoon (July – late September) is another option, but weather can still be very hot and sticky (high humidity), when it’s not raining.

Whichever time of year you choose to come to Agra, I recommend avoiding weekends , as this is when the majority of Indian domestic tourists travel, and the city and major sights get very crowded. Note that the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and special fees and conditions apply if you want to see the Taj during the full moon.

Where to Stay in Agra

For me, this time one of the highlights of my Agra trip was where I chose to stay.

When it comes to choosing between Agra hotels, unfortunately the options are not always inspiring. There’s a dearth of large (and mostly bland) chain hotels that cater to the wedding and conference market in Agra, and there’s the backpacker hostels of Taj Ganj (some with some great rooftop views it has to be said).

But there’s not much in-between, that has character, represents Agra’s culture, or has the real warmth of hospitality that makes travel in India so special. So I was so happy to stumble upon Ekaa Villa Boutique Hotel & Kitchen which is Agra’s first boutique hotel.

Located in the Taj Nagri phase 2 area just 10 drive minutes from the Taj itself, Ekaa Villa is a peaceful retreat away from the tourist throngs and busy streets of Agra. With just 13 beautifully designed rooms, this boutique hotel reflects the city around it in its design and decor, with a contemporary twist. Rooms feature huge comfy beds, Taj frames on the walls and rain showers. There’s a library on the top flor with some great books and photography of Agra (perfect for unwinding on a hot afternoon or after a busy day), and the restaurant area includes a courtyard area for al fresco dining.

The hospitality here is second to none, with the staff seeming to know exactly when you really need one of their thirst quenching iced-teas, a winning formula when combined with the knowledge and passion for Agra that is infectious from its owners.

I highly recommend staying here if you can – and try out one of their Experience packages (see more below in getting off the beaten path in Agra).

Top Tips for Visiting Agra

As a popular tourist destination in India, Agra needs some pre-planning, especially if its one of your first stops in India. Unfortunately as a place that sees a lot of visitors on whistlestop tours who haven’t done their research, over-charging is common practice, and scams are not uncommon.

Here are some of my tips for seeing the better side of Agra. You can find additional considerations for (solo) female travellers below, too.

  • Stay longer than a day . There’s so much more to see in Agra than just the Taj Mahal and the fort, I really recommend staying 2-3 days here if you possibly can to get a real sense of Agra.
  • Pre-book your Agra accommodation . The usual rackets operated by rickshaw drivers who will try to take you to hotels that pay them commission is a problem here, which can be avoided if you pre-book and insist on being taken there.
  • Negotiate with rickshaw drivers – the prices quoted at popular tourist sights and at railway stations on arrival will be high, so barter them down ( by at least 50% ). I recommend organising a pickup through your hotel from the train station or airport to cut down on hassle.
  • Check the weather and dress accordingly – Agra has very seasonal weather, so you’ll need a decent coat/jacket in winter, and light cotton in hot months. If in doubt, pack layers you can peel off as the weather warms up during the day.
  • Ignore people who approach you offering to be your guide / show you around / show you a better view, take your photos, claim to know you (eg from your hotel), or just start following you and telling you about things – in all of these cases people are trying to either hire themselves as your guide (will expect payment) or are unfolding some kind of scam.
  • Agra is not the best place for souvenir shopping. Because of the high tourist footfall, souvenirs are overpriced here – try to buy in other parts of India from local crafts (wo)men directly if you can.
  • Do enjoy the amazing local food . Agra is famous for its mithai (sweets) and milk produce – Lassi, rabri & hot milk as well as for its non-veg (meat) based food. Pick restaurants and stalls that are busy and have a high turnover of customers, or book a food tour with a local guide who can take you the the best spots. If you stay at Ekaa (above) they can take you for delicious local treats.
  • Factor in some down time . As with so many of India’s top destinations, there’s so much to see and do here it can be tempting to pack your days solid with sightseeing – but for best results I find some downtime is helpful to reflect on all you’ve experienced and seen, or just catch an afternoon nap – especially important if you’re travelling to Agra during hotter months!
  • Buy your monument tickets in advance, online – see more on how to do it below.

Places to Visit in Agra

Agra is dotted with beautiful monuments, the old city, gardens, sunset spots – far more than you might think on an initial glance! As the former capital of Mughal India (from 1501 until 1638 when Shah Jahan built a new capital in Delhi) , there is arguably nowhere better in India to see stunning Mughal architecture.

One thing to note when planning your visits to the various monuments in Agra and around (including Fatehpur Sikri), is that tickets now have to be bought online and are not available at the monuments themselves (you’ll find signs with a QR code that you can scan). Head to this website to buy your tickets – they can be booked up to a week in advance. If you have trouble with your card being accepted, you could ask your hotel to try and book tickets for you on an Indian card and add them to your bill (foreign cards seem to be hit and miss if they are accepted or not).

Y ou can also buy skip the line tickets here which include an English-speaking guide

The Taj Mahal

There may be far more to see in Agra beyond the Taj, but you still won’t want to miss it. No matter how many photos you’ve seen (and even if you’ve visited before), there’s nothing that quite prepares you for the first shining white glimpse of the Taj Mahal through the entrance gate, glinting in the misty morning light.

The best time to visit the Taj Mahal, without question, is for sunrise. The monument is open sunrise to sunset, Saturday to Thursday ( the Taj is closed every Friday ). Sunrise is a little loose as a time… so it’s worth getting there a bit before. In late march, we arrived at the Taj at 06.30 and were a little late, 6am would have been the perfect time to arrive. The reason why sunrise is the best time is a) for the beautiful morning light and b) it’s the only time of day you’ll see the Taj with fewer crowds.

There are three entrances to the Taj Mahal – South (closest to the budget hotels at Taj Ganj), West, and East (closer to the higher end hotels located in the south east of the city). Note that regular auto-rickshaws are not allowed within 500m of the Taj due to pollution, so you’ll have to walk the last stretch or take an e-rickshaw. At Shilpgram (east entrance) the e-rickshaw cost is included in foreigner ticket prices.

The Red Fort

Second only to the Taj Mahal when it comes to top places to visit in Agra, the Agra Fort is one of the finest Mughal forts in India, and a step up on Delhi’s very similar version. Construction of the fort was begun in 1565 by Emperor Akbar, and then finished by his grandson, Shah Jahan, who transformed the military fort into a palace, adding his signature touch of plenty of white marble.

Rising above the Yamuna river, you can easily spend hours wandering around the massive fort. The best time to come is very early morning to avoid the tour groups, preferably while they’re still at the Taj. The fort opens at sunrise. Another bonus for sunrise visitors are the photo ops back over towards the Taj Mahal (you’ll need a decent zoom lens), where if you’re lucky, you’ll catch the sun rising behind the Taj.

Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)

Probably my favourite monument in Agra, the tomb of Persian nobleman, Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather, the “Baby Taj” is a treat for the eyes as well as the crowd-weary. The intricate designs and carved marble lattice screens are impressive examples of Persian architecture, and the river-side location makes for a peaceful spot to take in the Yamuna views of Agra.

Best of all, the traditional Persian style gardens are being restored to their former glory – traditionally these contained cypress trees, roses and flowers according to the Persian traditions around gardens. Cypress trees were used to represent life and death, a figure pointing towards the heavens bridging the life and the afterlife. The gardens follow the traditional ‘char Bagh’ style, divided by four water streams.

There’s an interesting display on the restoration of these gardens to the traditional Persian style with trees and flowers, from the British style grass ‘lawns’ that were imposed during colonial times which destroyed the rich diversity of these and other Mughal gardens in Agra.

Sikandra / Akbar’s Tomb

The resting place of Emperor Akbar, Sikandra lies 10km to the west of Agra, and is another incredible example of the beautiful Mughal architecture in Agra. Most impressive are the entrance gateway to Sikandra with its four towers, along with the beautifully painted ceilings and walls of the main cenotaph.

The gateway opens out onto expansive lawned gardens (presumably the traditional Persian style was present here before the British lawn-ified them). Deer can be seen wandering around, and the gardens are peaceful spot to relax in.

Unfortunately the tomb itself and several of the outbuildings are a shadow of their former glory, having experienced multiple raids by the local Jat warrior rulers that preceded the Mughal kingdom (the bones of Akbar were removed during one of the Jat raids) – and despite restoration work undertaken by the British during the early twentieth century. But, raids aside, this is still one of the most impressive Agra attractions, which receives a fraction of the visitors compared to other Agra must see sights.

Mehtab Bagh & Taj Viewing Point

The park across the river from the park (Mehtab Bagh) has long been a favourite sunset viewing point for the Taj, and the gardens provide for a pleasant stroll however a new sunset viewing point has now been put in which runs in front of the park directly next to the river – so your view from the park may be obscured by people in front of you.

The viewing point is paid access (with heavy surcharges for visiting at the full moon), and additional camera charges apply.

In my view, there are much better viewing points for the Taj – as these days the Yamuna river flow is far reduced, with the effect being you are rather looking across damp grass up at the Taj, rather than the sunset river reflection you have in your mind. It’s also worth noting that boat trips to view the Taj are now banned.

Agra off the Beaten Path & Responsible Tourism in Agra

As home to the Taj Mahal, Agra, unsurprisingly sees a huge influx of tourists (especially in winter, and on weekends) and the volume of footfall has an impact including over-crowding and over-commercialisation. One of the simplest ways to create a better impact on your trip to Agra, is to stay longer and support local businesses.

A surprisingly high percentage of visitors just come for the day, meaning that they don’t spend at hotels, or much at restaurants, or have time to absorb much of the culture, creating a kind of flood-in-flood-out tourism challenge. By doing the opposite and supporting smaller hotels, restaurants and hiring local guides, the positive effects of tourism are magnified. So, come for at least a couple of days if you can, preferably not at the weekend.

Along with Agra’s “big hitters” (above), there are several lesser known monuments around the city to fill your days with and take in on heritage walks – but, beyond a doubt, my favourite way to experience Agra beyond the crowds was on the experiences (short tours) that Ekaa Villa arranged for us.

A highlight was walking through rural villages on the outskirts of Agra, complete with chai-stops at villagers’ homes, and wandering to the edge of wheat fields for what turned out to be some of the most stunning views of the Taj I’ve seen – with no-one else around.

You also do not want to miss out on Agra’s food scene, and by that I don’t mean sticking to tourist-focused restaurants at hotels. Take a trip to the halwaais and sweet makers in old Agra on a food tour, and make sure there’s room in your stomach for plenty of lassi .

Here are a few responsible tourism related organisations to support on your trip to Agra:

  • Sheroes Hangout – This cafe is run by local women survivors of acid attacks and domestic violence. Located behind Go Stops Hostel in Taj Nagari Phase 1.
  • Agra Heritage Walks – Specialise in walks run by local artists and off the beaten path in Agra
  • Ekaa Experiences – Secret Taj walks and excursions for those staying with Ekaa Villa
  • Wildlife SOS – The award-winning Indian wildlife conservation group has a nearby sloth bear rescue centre outside of Agra as well as its Elephant rescue centre at nearby Mathura (2 hours drive from Agra). Both are open to visitors on prior arrangement.

Agra for Solo Female Travellers

Located in western Uttar Pradesh, Agra is one of India’s more conservative parts of the country, and although many solo female travellers (including me) visit Agra with absolutely no problem, it’s advisable to think and plan ahead to get the best experience out of your trip.

Here are a few tips:

  • You probably know this already, but Agra is not Goa. Leave the shorts firmly in your bag, and see my what to wear in India post here. The advice for ‘conservative India’ applies here
  • You don’t need to cover your hair to enter most monuments here, but dressing respectfully is appreciated (no bare limbs)
  • Book hotels / homestays with reviews from other solo female travellers ahead of time (Ekaa is a great choice which gets lots of solo female travellers)
  • For some of the larger Agra sights such as Sikandra, I recommend hiring a guide – as grounds can be big and there can be groups of men loitering. Book a guide through your hotel or through a pre-booked tour, not someone who claims to be a guide outside sight entrances. (You don’t need a guide for the Taj Mahal which is always busy)
  • If you’re going to Fatehpur Sikri, you definitely do need a guide, as sadly the place is full of scammers and touts (and for this reason has been removed from many tour itineraries). I recommend pre-booking a trip and transfer online such as this one or via your accommodation in Delhi or Agra.
  • Avoid heading out at night on your own in Agra as a solo woman. If you do want to go out at night, use Uber, or better book a trusted driver through your hotel who will wait for you and get dropped door-to-door. If you’re in a mixed group, going out is no problem, but don’t wander late at night un-necessarily.
  • It’s not recommended to go down to the river or remote sunset spots on your own for safety reasons (think groups of men loitering).

Getting to and from Agra

Agra is well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Varanasi and many other Indian cities.

Train : Agra is very easy to reach by train – but be aware that Agra has several train stations so do check which yours comes into and leaves from. Agra Cantt (Cantonment) is the largest with the majority of trains arriving into and out of. To or from Delhi, the best train to get is the 12050 / 12049 Gatimaan Express – currently one of India’s fastest trains – which runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin in South Delhi to Agra Cantonment.

Book your Delhi-Agra train tickets here

Or – if you like the sound of going to Agra by train from Delhi but would rather someone else did the planning, you can book this Agra day trip by train tour .

Air : Flights from major Indian cities connect to Agra’s airport, which is located 13kms from Agra city.

Road: Agra is a quick 2-3 hour drive of around 185kms from Delhi along the Delhi-Agra Yamuna expressway. You can book a taxi, inter-city Uber, or take one of the many buses serving the Delhi-Agra route.

Agra Travel Guide FAQ’s

When is the best time to visit agra.

October – March is the best time weather-wise. December and January are the coolest months, but also attract the most crowds, so times like late October and late February are a great idea. Whenever you visit, try to avoid weekends if you can.

What should I wear as a Female Traveller to Agra?

Agra is located in one of the more conservative areas of India, so I recommend covering your legs down to at least your knees, shoulders and avoid any strappy, low cut revealing clothes. Leave the shorts in your bag for Goa. Maxi dresses (no big slits) are a good option, as are maxi skirts with a t-shirt or top (plus they’ll look good in your photos). Scarves are super-useful for covering up when need be.

What do I need to know about visiting the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is open daily except Fridays, and tickets need to be bought in advance, online, using the Architectural Survey of India payment portal (link above). At time of writing (April 2022), the rate for foreign visitors is 2500 rupees. There are 3 entrances (west, south and east), with the most useful depending on where you are coming from (see above). The best time to visit the Taj is at sunrise, for beautiful light and fewer crowds. Separate pricing applies for visiting the Taj during the Full Moon and days surrounding it.

Editorial note: Thank you to Ekaa Villa for hosting my stay with them – as usual this doesn’t affect my thoughts, ideas and recommendations!

Agra Travel Guide & The Best Agra Itinerary

agra visit best time

Agra is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, famous for its iconic monuments and rich history. Each year, millions come from around the globe to this (relatively) small city in northern India. “Why?” you ask. Two words: Taj Mahal, one of the 7 wonders of the world. This famous monument has immortalised the love of an emperor and his wife since its completion in 1648. Epitomising the ornate Mughal architectural style, the Taj Mahal has made jaws drop and hearts swoon for centuries.

However, you’re wrong to consider Agra just a one-stop shop. With two additional UNESCO World Heritage sites to its name, the city boasts multiple windows into the past.

About the itinerary : Here I not only give info on the best time to visit Agra but also what to eat, where to stay and an itinerary that will show you the most stunning parts. I have my top travel tips for visiting Agra, advice for female travellers and much more – read on for what you need to know while planning your trip to Agra!

Best things to do in Agra

Here is a list of places to visit in Agra:

  • Itmad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb
  • Fatehpur Sikri
  • Mehtab Bagh

agra visit best time

One thing to note when planning your visits to the various monuments in Agra and around (including Fatehpur Sikri), is that tickets now have to be bought online and are not available at all the monuments themselves (you’ll find signs with a QR code that you can scan). Head to  this website to buy your tickets  – they can be booked up to a week in advance. If you have trouble with your card being accepted, you could ask your hotel to try and book tickets for you on an Indian card and add them to your bill (foreign cards seem to be hit and miss if they are accepted or not).

You can also purchase skip the Taj Mahal queue tickets from here.

Best time to visit Agra

While the city can be visited year-round, there are certain times of the year that are more ideal for travellers based on weather conditions and crowd levels.

The best time to visit Agra is during the winter months of November to February. During this time, the weather is pleasant and cool, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 22°C. This makes it comfortable for travellers to explore the city and its attractions without being hindered by extreme heat. Additionally, the clear skies during this time make for stunning views of the Taj Mahal and other architectural marvels in the city.

agra visit best time

Another reason to visit Agra during the winter months is that it coincides with several festivals and events. One of the most popular festivals in Agra is the Taj Mahotsav, which is held in February. This festival celebrates the culture and heritage of Uttar Pradesh and includes cultural performances, food stalls, and handicraft exhibitions. The festival also provides a unique opportunity to witness the Taj Mahal at night, as it is opened up to visitors during the festival.

If you can’t make it to Agra during the winter months, the next best time to visit is during the monsoon season, which runs from July to September. While the weather can be unpredictable during this time, with occasional heavy rainfall and humidity, it is still a great time to visit as the crowds are significantly lower.

Avoid visiting Agra during the summer months of March to June, as the weather can be extremely hot and dry, with temperatures soaring as high as 45°C. The heat can make it uncomfortable for travellers to explore the city, and the crowds are also at their peak during this time, making it difficult to enjoy the attractions.

Where to stay in Agra

Where you should stay depends on how many days have you are travelling for, the main purpose of your stay and what kind of commute would you like. My main purpose was to visit Taj Mahal and see the sunrise, hence we stayed in a homestay near the East gate of Taj Mahal.

  • We stayed in Coral court Homesaty , 10 mins walk from the Taj Mahal East gate, and I cant recommend it enough. Homely, clean, beautiful view with the best decor. We met a lot of fellow travellers from Germany, South Korea, UK.
  • If you are visiting for more number of days and want to stay in luxury spa resort, then I definitely recommend ITC Mughal , it is within the city and only 20 mins drive from Taj Mahal. Plus it has the best restaurant which you will read about later is a MUST EAT in Restaurant in Agra.

Agra travel tips

As a popular tourist destination in India, Agra needs some pre-planning, especially if its one of your first stops in India. Unfortunately as a place that sees a lot of visitors on whistlestop tours who haven’t done their research, over-charging is common practice, and scams are not uncommon.

agra visit best time

Here are some of my tips for seeing the better side of Agra. You can find additional considerations for (solo) female travellers below, too.

  • Stay longer than a day – There’s so much more to see in Agra than just the Taj Mahal and the fort, I really recommend staying 2-3 days here if you possibly can to get a real sense of Agra. Pre-book your Agra accommodation. The usual rackets operated by rickshaw/car drivers who will try to take you to hotels that pay them commission is a problem here, which can be avoided if you pre-book and insist on being taken there.
  • Negotiate with rickshaw/car drivers – the prices quoted at popular tourist sights and at railway stations on arrival will be high, so barter them down (by at least 50%). I recommend organising a pickup through your hotel from the train station or airport to cut down on hassle. You can also use Uber but don’t agree for the car drivers to shut down the app. When coming from train station, you will see a government pre-paid taxi booth just outside the station. They will give you fixed price for taxis, like they gave us Rs. 250 +10 (for service) for our taxi from train station to Coral Court homestay.
  • Check the weather and dress accordingly – Agra has very seasonal weather, so you’ll need a decent coat/jacket in winter, and light cotton in hot months. If in doubt, pack layers you can peel off as the weather warms up during the day. Another thing would be to dress modestly in this city, so leave the short dresses or anything above knee packed in the bags.
  • Agra is not the best place for souvenir shopping .
Pick restaurants and stalls that are busy and have a high turnover of customers.
  • Factor in some down time . As with so many of India’s top destinations, there’s so much to see and do here it can be tempting to pack your days solid with sightseeing – but for best results I find some downtime is helpful to reflect on all you’ve experienced and seen, or just catch an afternoon nap – especially important if you’re travelling to Agra during warmer months!
  • Buy your monument tickets in advance, online – as mentioned above in ‘Best Things to do in Agra’ section.

  • For a more budget option, I recommend Pinch of Spice. It is a bit more oily with the dishes, but the Mughal dishes are on point. Try their sizzling Brownie and Pan shots ( non-alcoholic).

Agra for solo Female travellers

agra visit best time

Located in western Uttar Pradesh, Agra is one of India’s more conservative parts of the country, and although many solo female travellers visit Agra with absolutely no problem, it’s advisable to think and plan ahead to get the best experience out of your trip.

Here are a few tips:

  • For some of the larger Agra sights such as Sikandra, I recommend hiring a guide – as grounds can be big and there can be groups of men loitering. Book a guide through your hotel or through a pre-booked tour, not someone who claims to be a guide outside sight entrances. (You don’t need a guide for the Taj Mahal which is always busy).

Getting To and Fro Agra

Agra is well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Varanasi and many other Indian cities.

  • Train : Agra is very easy to reach by train – but be aware that Agra has several train stations so do check which yours comes into and leaves from. Agra Cantt (Cantonment) is the largest with the majority of trains arriving into and out of. To or from Delhi, the best train to get is the 12050 / 12049 Gatimaan Express – currently one of India’s fastest trains – which runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin in South Delhi to Agra Cantonment early in the morning and takes less than 1 hour. Book your Delhi-Agra train tickets here
  • Or – if you like the sound of going to Agra by train from Delhi but would rather someone else did the planning, you   can book this   Agra day trip by train tour .
  • Air : Flights from major Indian cities connect to Agra’s airport, which is located 13kms from Agra city.
  • Taxi: Agra is a quick 3-4 hour drive of around 185kms from Delhi along the Delhi-Agra Yamuna expressway. You can book a taxi, inter-city Uber, or take one of the many buses serving the Delhi-Agra route.

Best Time To Visit Agra

Best time to visit agra.

Close your eyes. Now think of Agra. Immediately, almost like a reflex, the image of Taj Mahal unfurls in your mind’s eye. Pale, pearly and glowing – the greatest ode to love that the world has seen. However, widen your eyes, let them drift past the Taj Mahal. Agra is more than this wonder. Here is Fatehpur Sikri, a beautiful and historical town, that houses the magnificent Buland Darwaza, Panch Mahal, the tomb of Salim Chisti. There lies Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Peeping out through the buildings of the city are tranquil Persian gardens.

There’s so much to do here, so much to experience. Don’t narrow your gaze to focus on the Taj Mahal, widen it to include this spectacular city and all it has to offer. Amongst stories of old, spectacular sweets, pilgrimage spots, markets, malls, Agra also offers different seasons to experience. A pleasant winter (which many consider the best time to visit Agra), a moderate monsoon and a simmering summer dominate the year, and each has its advantages. So, we’ve put together a small guide to Agra’s seasons, to help you decide when you want to visit this glorious city.

Peak Season: November to March

Off Season: April to October

Agra in Summer (April to June)

Temperature: The air temperature during the season of summer fluctuates between 23°C and 40°C.

Weather: Summer heat sneaks its way into Agra during the tail end of March. The hot and dry weather increases gradually. However, it’s April and May you should really look out for. Temperatures rise to a dramatic 40°C (and possibly even more). Agra continues to simmer most of June. However, towards the end of the month, pre-monsoon showers make their presence felt.

Significance: This season doesn’t see many tourists. Agra during summer, experiences high levels of heat and dryness, which many find daunting. However, due to the thin crowds, you can visit all of the famous historical monuments around the city with ease.

Why you should visit now: Agra is beautiful, regardless of weather. If you have your heart set on a summer in Agra, take advantage of low prices and great travel deals, as this is the off season.

Things to know before the visit: Summer peaks in Agra during the month of May. Sightseeing might be a strain on your body if you’re not prepared for it. The day in particular is uncomfortably hot, with temperatures spiking to a startling 45 °C. Evenings and nights are relatively cooler. If you want to see the Taj Mahal during summer, make it an early morning visit.

Tips: To combat the extreme heat, it’s vital that you pack accordingly. Loose, light, cotton clothing is ideal. A bottle of water and your sunscreen are your best friends this season.

Agra in Monsoon (July to September)

Temperature:  The air temperature during the season of monsoon fluctuates between 25°C and 35°C.

Weather: After the sizzle and scorch of the summer, Agra collectively breathes a sigh of relief when the monsoons arrive. The showers range from moderate to the occasional downpour. The heat comes down considerably, though it is still hot and humid in the city.

Significance: During the August-September period, Agra readies itself for the Kailash Fair. Located 12 kilometres outside Agra, the fair is held at the Kailash temple and pays homage to Lord Shiva. Devotees from all around Agra swarm to the city to attend this festival, and this is a great time to affirm your faith.

Why you should visit now: There’s something to be said for rain drenched monuments. The Taj Mahal looks spectacular in the rain. Moving around is also easier during this season. The rains are not too heavy, and so they don’t hamper your ability to sightsee and move around the city.

Things to know before the visit: Agra during monsoon, receives an average annual rainfall of around 400 mm. The heaviest rainfall usually occurs during the month of August, so plan accordingly.

Tips: An umbrella, raincoat and study shoes are essential during this season, especially if you’re in the mood to sightsee, shop in the markets or take a long walk.

Agra in Winter (October to March)

Temperature:  The air temperature during the season of monsoon fluctuates between 7°C and 36°C.

Weather: The climate of Agra in winter is the biggest reason why many people feel like winter is the best time to visit Agra. The heat and rain slowly retreat, and a pleasant coolness descends on the city. Temperatures drop down, sometimes to 2°C during the peak months of winter. The average during winter ranges from 8 to 14°C. This is a great time to walk around the city, though you may be hampered by the thick fog that curls into Agra during winter.

Significance: Winter is choc full of wonder in Agra. There are multiple festivals to attend. The most famous being the Taj Mahotsav. This is an annual 10-day festival in February, located close to the Taj Mahal. You’ll be able to admire and buy exquisite handicrafts made by local craftsmen, and enjoy culture shows, great food and folk and ghazal performances. In October-November, you can attend the Bateshwar Fair. This town, 70 kms from Agra, has over 108 temples, though this festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Take a dip in the holy waters of Yamuna, witness the livestock and cattle fair. If you’re not up for travel, Agra has similar festivities. This season also boasts of the Ram Bharat. This is a special marriage procession of Ram, which many devotees come to see.

Why you should visit now: The weather during this season is cool and pleasing. You aren’t hampered by rain or shine, like other seasons. Instead you get to explore all of Agra without breaking a sweat. Magical misty mornings, pleasant days and chilly nights – what’s not to love about that?

Things to know before the visit: This is peak tourist season in Agra. The Taj Mahal still exerts its magnetic pull to tourists from all around the world. You’ll need to keep the crowds in mind when you are booking your trip, and you’ll need to keep a sharp eye on prices as they tend to skyrocket during winter.

Tips: No matter how pleasant Agra may be in winter, remember, that its cold outside and the temperature can drop. You need to keep sweaters, scarves and gloves on you, in case you aren’t used to the cold.

Filled with stunning monuments that can render the world speechless, Agra is an Indian city located right beside the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh. Perhaps the most famous Agra tourist places are the Taj Mahal, and the Agra fort – unique architectural marvels attracting millions of tourists every year. Its tourist favoritism has placed Agra in the Golden Triangle tourist circuit of India and the Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc Tourist Circle.

Agra’s rich history begins in the era of the Indian epic Mahabharata. At the time, Agra was referred to as Agrevana, a word that translates to “border of the forest”. Around the early 17th century, the city was under the rule of King Jaypal. It was later taken over by Mahmud of Ghazni who destroyed Agra and left it in ruins. During the Lodi dynasty, it was made the capital by Sultan Sikandar Lodi, restoring it to its previous glory. Since then and until the Indian independence, Agra remained an important political seat for rulers. Kings like Sher Shah Suri and Akbar ruled the city for decades before surrendering it to the British.

The Mughal period is widely considered to be a “golden period” for Agra. During this time, numerous small and big monuments and resources were established in the city. Emperor Akbar declared it an imperial top-level province and renovated existing monuments. It was a chief center for education, arts, politics, commerce, and trade. Later, Akbar constructed on the outskirts of Agra the iconic heritage city of Fatehpur Sikri. Emperor Jahangir planted several gardens in the premises of Agra’s Red Fort.

Agra’s beautiful monuments and gorgeous gardens give you plenty to do as a tourist. You may just wish to explore and photograph or go on an adventure amid its serene landscape – Agra will not disappoint you.
