This week may have two brand-new Star Trek episodes, one of which is season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Picard , but there is still much more to come in 2022, including the series debut of Strange New Worlds  in May. And now we can get a nice, close look at the new Starfleet uniforms for the highly anticipated series set on Captain Pike’s Enterprise.

Strange New Uniforms

We got our first glimpse at the new design of the Strange New Worlds USS Enterprise uniforms last fall, and there hasn’t been much since then. However, thanks to a nice display on Star Trek: The Cruise—which set sail over the weekend and is still ongoing—we can now see the uniforms in detail. On display were uniforms for Captain Pike, Number One. Spock, and Cadet Uhura.

There were also information cards with more details (noted under each uniform below). Uniforms are designed by Bernadette Cross and Gersha Phillips. All the photos were provided by friend of the site Marina Kravchuk .

Examples of typical specializations include biological studies, technicians including sensor and other computer-based information collection and analysis, medics, nurses, and surgeons. The assigned division is represented by the uniform tunic’s prevailing blue color, with the officer’s rank denoted by stripes on the tunic’s sleeves.

‘Strange New Worlds’ Is Most-Watched Paramount+ Star Trek Original Debut; CEO Says Franchise “Just Getting Started”

Love these uniforms as much as I love the ones from season 2 of discovery and the short trek episodes and as much as I love the normal season 1 and two dsc uniforms and the season 4 dsc uniforms and the lower deck and prodigy and picard uniforms they are all so very cool looking

I can’t say I like them as much as the ones from S2 of Discovery. They just look so obscenely casual.

Much like other Star Trek uniform of the mid 23rd century not to mention Starfleet is not a full time space military branch for the federation most of the time they are the space exploration and scientific research and diplomatic branch of the federation

Interesting season 1 looks to be set in 2259 a year after the events of the season2 dsc finale epilogue wonder if I am correct in thinking each season will be in a different year aka season 2 being in 2260 season 3 2261 season 4 2262 season 5 2263 season 6 2264 and season 7 2265 which would bring us to the year Kirk took command

I don’t think you can make the assumption though of a one-for-one year to season relationship given there are only 10 eps per season.

They are doing it with lower decks season 1 was 2380 season 2 2381 and season two of picard starts in 2400 with season 1 was mainly in 2399 and season 3 of discovery was 3180 and season 4 3181

Yeah they have done it with LDS, PIC and DIS so far but it’s probably not etched in stone either. It can probably change if they are telling a particular story. The old shows were basically set in a different year every season as well, but sometimes it got tricky with all the season finale cliffhangers that started the story right up again the next season and not a year later but no one thinks about it too much ;).

Not really. Lower Decks started to compress its stardates in season 2, and Mike McMahan said the series won’t get to the flashback scenes in Picard, no matter how many seasons they end up doing…. And Picard is jumping 1.5 years in season 2.

Spare me with uniforms. The show starts in less than 9 weeks and we haven´t even got a teaser trailer. It is really getting ridicilous…..

Jesus, dude. That is one of the most entitled things I’ve seen anyone post here.

Why do you so frequently attack people that you disagree with? It’s getting old.

And “where is the trailer” is kind of an obvious comment to make given we are getting so close now. Totally weird how anyone would take offense to that opinion?

I don’t, so your point is moot. I don’t care if people disagree with me, nor did I indicate I agree or disagree with anything so I have no idea where you’re coming from on that. The comment I posted is a valid one–there are a lot of entitled fans here–and getting worked up because a trailer isn’t available on one’s timetable IS entitlement.

I thought personal attacks were against the rules here?

Season 2 of Picard hasn’t even started yet. Did you really expect a SNW trailer before then?

Personally, I was half expecting a Super Bowl commercial for it.

The insatiable need (and unreasonable expectation) to have all content immediately! We have had a teaser. And who really cares? We’re getting at least 2 seasons of the show, so chill.

The dude’s excited and wants a trailer given we are only 2 months out? Perhaps you need to chill…just saying? :-) IDIC

You’re right… My bad. We’re all chomping at the bit for the trailer! It was just the “spare me with the uniforms” comment; the good people at this site work hard to bring us all sorts of interesting news!

And you are right on that part of it. No worries! We’re all excited, obviously!

I have not been this excited about TV Trek since the DS9 premiere.

LOL. Come on, man. After your comment to me above?

I don’t think you’re alone with that frustration but it hit me for the first time a week ago they are probably doing it this way to give Picard the limelight in the marketing since it’s coming so soon. I think the strategy is to just market whatever show is on now of course and rev up for the next one. They don’t want people too focus on SNW until the next show is released.

When you look at it that way, you become more calm lol. And now that Picard will start so soon then we will probably get our first trailer a few weeks later now. And once the marketing starts it will probably go into overdrive like they do Discovery and now Picard.

So its coming! For now, let’s focus on Discovery giving us (hopefully) a solid fourth season finale and Picard coming out of the gate strong this week! I have a feeling there is going to be tons to talk about in March with these three shows. :)

Wait seriously TM?? You removed my link to the video footage? Um, why??

I wish you guys will just TELL US what is ok to post and not to post since nothing I posted was out of bounds and was posted publicly on Paramount’s site weeks ago. So what was the problem? No one is going to get into trouble for that.

It’s just frustrating when you’re just trying to share things with other fans here. Or just post it yourselves. I’m sure they would appreciate it since not many have seen it.

And not a single response. It would at least be nice to be told why?

Did you post SNW footage from the Paramount investors meeting? Paramount has been very clear that they do not want that available online.

The investors meeting is posted online on the official Paramount site . They posted it a few days after the event for anyone to stream it. It’s 2 hours and 19 minutes long. Type in Paramount and investorsevent you will see it. The footage is there for all to see. The part I posted is around the the 53rd minute of the video. It’s barely a minute long.

What you’re talking about is they didn’t want the TRAILER available online which is redacted from the video I’m talking about. The stuff I posted is up on their site and all over Youtube now. If hey didn’t want that shown, they would’ve just redacted that like they did the trailer as well.

Again if they don’t want us to post certain things, FINE, but at least explain what they are. It’s frustrating because this is the third time this has happened and like the other two times no one just tells me why it was pulled and they clearly read the boards.

I got shut down once for daring to gripe about Orville posts on a Star Trek site ;) lol

Copying any footage from ANY part of the investor meeting including screenshots is disallowed, anything online is considered pirated. There was a warning at top of the meeting making that clear. Obviously, if it was allowed we would have reported on it long ago. Please give us some credit.

I don’t think you’re alone with that frustration but it hit me for the first time a week ago they are probably doing it this way to give Picard the limelight in the marketing since it’s coming so soon.

It’s not like there are too many Trek shows playing at once, and that one might cannibalize from another. Surely Paramount would be too wise to get into *that* situation.

I know how you feel but I rather the problem is too much Trek being made then no Trek at all; which would’ve been the case for the last 5 years if we still only had the movies to wait for….and still waiting.

No one wants that void again I think.

Those of us in international markets in which there’s no P+ don’t even know whether the show will be available here. I can only assume the worst, which is that it will join DSC S4 in the limbo universe of dumb Paramount executive decisions

Uniforms are looking great.

Boy, they’ve really captured the flavour of TOS with these uniforms! Nice.

I’m just happy the Enterprise will be flying again.

Uniforms are amazing!

The hockey fan in me likes them a lot.

What’s hockey got to do with it? Seriously, just asking. Are these like hockey uniforms or something?

Love those details!! I hope we get some female characters in proper pants, I’m not in love with these being plain leggings, but it’s fine. The cut and color blocks and the whole design otherwise makes up for it a lot, as does the footwear. I have some jackets with the same kind of, um, side panels?? I guess they’re called, like that and I really like them..

You aren’t seeing it. They’re wearing the exact same sin tight “leggings” as the men. The only difference is they provided a longer top to avoid sexualizing the women. It pays homage to the original uniforms while being progressive in design.

The sensible thing to do would’ve been to give the women pants… like they wear in The Cage. They could’ve had a canon rationale not to have goofily gendered uniforms in the year 2022. These female uniforms are probably at the insistence of Akiva Goldsman, you know, the guy who was pushing for incest in Picard and who always has sound judgement.

What are you talking about in the last bit sounds like something made up by a certain group of YouTubers if you remember season2 of discovery commander Nhan wore black leggings under her uniform also if you take a look at other images shown these are optional female uniforms number one and LT Erica ortegas are wearing the other uniform with the v neck top and pants

I am glad they appear to have the optional pants for practical reasons. Exploring planets, fight scenes etc. in dresses might make things a bit difficult. I still want to see M’Benga’s medical tunic and Chapel’s medical outfit. Hopefully their close-ups are forthcoming.

Her outfit looks to be a white version of the dress seen here

A little too bland for my taste. They probably were so afraid to deviate from the original show–thanks to the screeching reaction of vocal fans to Discovery, that they held their creative energies in check. Sad.

I like them! Yeah, a bit casual but who are we kidding so was the original uniforms. And sorry to say this but if Discovery had these uniforms in season one, it probably would’ve been easier to keep it in the 23rd century. But same time, I can’t really imagine these uniforms on that ship either. They come off so bubbly, cloying…and happy. Nothing about Discovery felt that way first season. ;)

“ first season.”

First season?????

They’re gorgeous. I want to wear the commamd uniform so bad.

It seems the uniforms in the Paramount+ promo don’t have the tiny insignias on the shoulders. Perhaps an earlier variant before they shot the season? Even in HD they’re not visible in the promo.

yes they were there

Just awesome!!!!!

They look good on mannequins but let’s see how they function on living, moving people. The short clips I’ve seen make them look…well, frankly, not good. TOS uniforms look better to my eye. The black around the collar is important, it can’t be too thick a la STID, can’t be too thin like these sometimes are, particularly in the Pike promo shot.

Also I made this comment yesterday on the Picard post, but Starfleet has a real uniform problem in general. The issue with making a zillion different Starfleet uniforms is…well, how are we supposed to feel attached to any single one? It’s like, TOS had one uniform. TNG had two. DS9 had two, and VOY had one. ENT had one. Discovery has now at least two, three if you include the TOS variant. Picard has half a dozen. Lower Decks has a couple. It’s like they’re cosplaying Starfleet, everyone gets their own take. The result is that it cheapens any single design, because there are 50 of them to choose from. How are you supposed to feel like a fleet when everyone’s got their own uni?

And to drive it all home, Gizmodo made this very same point today: https://gizmodo.com/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-uniforms-revealed-1848603985

I tend to agree. It helps when uniforms are a little more… well, uniform.

24th century had several changes tmp maroon monsters without the turtleneck undershirts which were used from 2300-2359 and the season 1 and 2 jumpsuits which were used from 2360-2365 the season 3-4 they had a two piece that had a seam down the center were used from 2365-2367and then seasons 5-7 had a solid version of the uniform top minus the seam down the center which were used from 2367-2370 then they were changed and there was two versions of the 2370-2372 a jump suit version and two piece version and then they changed again in 2373-2379 and a new set of uniforms came in in 2380-2383 and another two variant uniform were in service till 2385 when another new uniform design came around in 2385-2390 and then another uniform came in 2391-2399

The 23rd century had several uniforms from 2239-2293 those blue uniforms from discovery were the main Starfleet uniforms In use since 2239-2257 with only only certain ships having the normal 3 color uniform turtleneck tops in gold, grey, tan which would be out of main use and replaced with gold blue and red with black pants version of the standard blue Starfleet uniform in 2257 and they were replaced with gold blue and red v neck tops with black crew neck undershirts with optional dress and black leggings for the main Starfleet uniforms from 2259-2270 and then Starfleet changed the uniforms again and were used from 2271-2280 and then from 2281-2293 they used the monster maroons with turtleneck undershirts

I agree. Especially the late 24th century is a mess now with Lower Decks, Picard and Protostar all doing their own thing.

Heels on the boots? They killed Kenny. Okay, I laughed at that.

I do not like these. You do not need the Starfleet logo embedded in texture in uniforms. It makes them look gaudy (and unnecessarily expensive to produce). I also do not see why the women’s uniforms should be so different from the men’s.

Expensive to produce? They are all replicated!

I don’t know what you mean by the women’s uniforms being different from the men’s? Are you just referring to the skirt uniforms or something else?

They do not have the Starfleet logo in the texture of the uniforms but department logos for which each uniform belongs to and the dress version is a optional uniform for anyone to were if they choose to they also have the top and pants version for anyone who wants to wear that uniform

They do not have the Starfleet logo in the texture of the uniforms but department logos

Way to miss the forest for the trees.

At any rate, the season 1-3 Discovery uniforms have the Starfleet logo printed on the side panels. The boots also appear to have it. Militaries do not go out of their way to put insignia everywhere, a point that Kirk made clear in TVH, incidentally.

The Kelvin uniforms were *covered* with the delta insignia.

What is it with new Trek and uniforms? Why do we get new ones for every season?

They should’ve used silver for Spock’s rank stripes as well. This is too subtle to tell the rank from a distance.

So Una and Spock were promoted.

Love the uniforms. Boots…..hmm…hope they are comfy. If they have to be on set 12+ hrs each day, they look very painful. Hope they build them with shoe experts. :D

Those 12+ hour days involve a lot of sitting around and waiting for the actors. Still, you would hope that the shoes are as comfortable as possible. If anybody can complain about uncomfortable boots it’s Doug Jones ;-)

Doug is amazing. All the makeup, his unique Kelpien legs and walk. He should get a special award every year, just for his outstanding presence/performance on the show.

Saru has been so well created right from the beginning, that you forget There is a “hyoo-män” inside this amazing Kelpien.

Hope we can see him again yelling, fighting, and running at super speeds. :P

Yeah, I might be unique here but I don’t give one iota about how the uniforms look. Never been too bothered about that aspect of the franchise. The plotting and characterization on the other hand is key to the success of the show for me. I also don’t care how the new Enterprise looks either.

The visually retconed enterprise looks beautiful inside and out and fits perfectly between the nx-01 and the tmp refit 1701 way more then the 60’s tos e version ever did and way more believable then the 60’s tos version ever did inside and out

Well, it’s pretty clear from the promo the gold women’s uniform shown here isn’t Number One’s–she’s wearing the same tunic and pants as Pike. Personally, I think they should have stuck with same Enterprise uniforms from Discovery. Why do the women get a comfortable open collar while the men’s tunics are more restrictive? Heck, why aren’t these unisex?

It’s pretty clear form the publicity shot that it is Number One’s. So apparentyl women can choose between styles.

I think both the men and women have black undershirts, with a bit more showing for the women.

I’m all in favor of “visual reboots,” and have long thought the TOS uniform could use one, but I’m not entirely on board here considering, for example, that the pilot uniforms (and those we saw in Discovery and Short Treks) were a lot more unisex-looking. The rank stripes come more from the Kelvin uniforms, but those were themselves a little more similar to the pilot versions. Still, not a big deal, I guess.

I think the Beyond uniforms are still my favourite. The first time I saw Pike in the uniform, I thought the collar just looked like a cheap v-neck, but they’re growing on me. The fabric just looks very stiff.

Why does each of these streaming shows each get randonly new uniforms? If none of thrm actually take place in the same universe, it wwould finally explain a lot.

Because DS9 didn’t get a new uniform after TNG? Lower Decks has shown Dominion War uniforms, indicating a transition from that uniform to the LD one. I don’t have an issue with uniform changes as in universe they change frequently. You can see they’re trying to bring it in line with TOS, but they’re obviously not going to go with the 60s uniforms. They used them in the DS9 and ENT episodes but it was more of a novelty then. Sustaining it over a whole series would be pastiche on the level of fan productions. That being said, as I mention in another comment, I don’t love these uniforms and would have preferred something like we saw in Beyond which came very close to TOS while still being modern.

But the old shows didn’t switch uniforms every season.

Not ken on the patterned shoulders and arms. Maybe a slightly different shade of the main colour would’ve been nicer, but the division texture just seems odd. Maybe a slightly taller collar as well… Other than that, I really like these. A fantastic update of the original uniforms!

I like these new costumes; they look less restrictive than the previous versions in DSC (I don’t know if that was due to how the fabric looked on-screen or if it was the tailoring). But I’m curious as to why the men’s black collar is arranged higher here than what was seen in the character reveal trailer several months back.

I really like these costumes. A nice update on TOS era uniforms but with movie-quality materials and finishing. Kudos to everyone involved. From what I can see SNW is looking very good indeed.

What is the deal with the inconsistent sleeves? Seems like such a simple thing to get right. In the TOS, Chekov was the rank of an ensign, which is the lowest officer, but he lacked a dashed-line stripe. Imagine a navy where an enlisted crew member and the lowest ranking officer have no sleeve cuff difference. It’s abusrd. It would have made sense for him to have a dashed stripe because a lieutenant was a single full stripe. Therefore, an ensign should be a dotted line stripe, but he didn’t have anything. Always bothered me. Now Pike has the full stripe, thin stripe, and full stripe, and his position is captain. The “number one” first officer has two full stripes. Her rank is lieutenant commander yet her sleeve has two full stripes. So, Pike is a rank higher and he has two stripes and a half stripe. Does that make his rank commander, since the first officer has two full stripes and is a lieutenant commander. If that’s the case, In TOS, two full stripes was a full commander (Spock in the TOS) and a full stripe with a dashed stripe was a lieutenant commander (Scotty in the TOS and McCoy in the TOS). Here we have a lieutenant commander with two full stripes (“number one”). And, here Spock has a full stripe and a thin stripe, but he is a Lieutenant. It’s absurd. What I don’t understand is why an ensign isn’t a thin stripe, a lieutenant a single thick stripe, a lieutenant commander a thick stripe and a thin stripe, a full commander two thick stripes, and a captain (as in the rank of captain) two full stripes with a thin stripe between them.

Starting with the original series, Star Trek has adopted a quasi-military series of ranks and protocols for its characters. Starfleet is ostensibly a peaceful organization dedicated to exploration and diplomacy, but things can get dangerous on the final frontier. A functioning chain of command is necessary in the event of trouble to ensure that everyone operates at peak efficiency.

It's a bit of a paradox, since Starfleet officers also tend to be rugged individualists, but it makes a good deal of sense and over time has become an indispensable part of the franchise. A given character's rank speaks volumes about their comparative age, their position onboard, and their relationship with the other members of the crew. As with most things Star Trek, rank insignia has evolved over time. Here's a breakdown of Starfleet's ranking system in descending order from the lowliest cadets to the most powerful admirals.

Updated January 18, 2024 by Robert Vaux: Star Trek's ranking system is very stable at this point, and very little tends to change. The article has been updated to include a brief list of prominent members of each rank, along with the series and seasons they held it. It has also been updated to conform to current CBR guidelines.

9 Cadets Are Officers in Training at Starfleet Academy

Star trek: voyager actor weighs in on controversial tuvix debate.

Star Trek: Voyager's Tuvix actor Tom Wright shares his opinion on whether Janeway made the right decision about his character's fate.

Cadets are typically students at Starfleet Academy , spending time onboard a starship as part of their training. They hold no rank and must obey the orders of any crewmen. They're often issued temporary badges or communicators and usually have a supervisory officer to watch over them. Cadets in the 23rd century wear badges with a distinctive black backing. Cadets in the 24th century wear distinctive uniforms denoting their status.

In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Enterprise is used as a training vessel, with the crew consisting almost entirely of cadets. Wesley Crusher formally joins Starfleet Academy starting in Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4, Episode 9, "Final Mission," and spends most of his subsequent appearances at that rank. Similarly, Nyota Uhura joins the Enterprise as a cadet in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as does Sylvia Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery.

8 Enlisted Personnel/NCO Are Starfleet's Worker Bees

While officers attend Starfleet Academy, the rank-and-file personnel attend the 24th-century equivalent of boot camp. They become the anonymous crew working in the background, performing the countless tiny tasks required to keep a starship running. Their ranks include both enlisted crewmen and petty officers (the equivalent of sergeants) who often play supervisory roles. They typically lack any insignia on their uniforms, though chief petty officers in the Next Generation era sometimes have a black pip or similar marking.

Enlisted personnel often serve as The Original Series ' infamous red shirts : doomed to die in the name of plot exposition. The Next Generation introduces perhaps Starfleet's best-known enlisted man. Miles O'Brien runs the transporters on the Enterprise-D, and later becomes Chief of Operations on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

7 Ensigns Hold The Lowest Rank

Every star trek series, ranked.

Some Star Trek shows are better received than others, but they all boldly push the franchise forward in some way.

Ensigns are the lowest-ranking officers on Starfleet vessels. Cadets typically receive the rank of ensign immediately upon graduation from Starfleet Academy. While they technically have command authority, they're usually assigned menial tasks beneath the attention of the senior officers. Like NCOs, they lack insignia on their uniforms in The Original Series era. With The Next Generation and later series, ensigns receive a single gold pip on their collar. They're often lumped into the red shirt category.

Harry Kim is probably the franchise's most famous (or infamous) ensign, failing to receive a single promotion through Star Trek: Voyager's seven seasons , despite serving with distinction on the bridge. The Original Series' Pavel Chekov also begins his Starfleet career as an ensign, though he advances at a faster rate. Of course, the four main characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks are ensigns, though they all receive a promotion to lieutenant, junior grade at the beginning of Season 4.

6 Lieutenant, Junior Grade Have More Responsibility Than Ensigns

The next step up the ladder is lieutenant, junior grade. These are officers with more authority and responsibility than ensigns, but who still require seasoning before taking higher command positions. Medical personnel typically receive the lieutenant, junior grade rank after graduating, which reflects their extended training time. The Original Series uses a single dashed bar on the uniform sleeves to denote them, though Strange New Worlds has retconned that with a connected colored bar. T he Next Generation and later series note the rank with a second black pip in addition to the ensign's colored pip.

Both Julian Bashir and Ezri Dax hold the rank of lieutenant, junior grade when they begin their duties on Deep Space 9, though Ezri receives hers as a field promotion in Season 7, Episode 3, "Afterimage." Geordi La Forge starts as a lieutenant, junior grade too, as does Mr. Worf. B'Elanna Torres receives the rank on a provisional basis when she joins the crew of the Voyager, and the Lower Decks crew are all promoted to lieutenant, junior grade in Season 4, Episode 1, "Twovix."

5 Lieutenants Lead the Away Teams and More

Did star trek (2009) incorporate a story from a canceled original series movie.

When J.J. Abrams helped reboot Star Trek in 2009, elements of the film seemed borrowed from The Academy Years, a discarded Original Series era movie.

Lieutenants have advanced to the point where they can take on considerable responsibilities. They may lead away teams or control key systems, and they often appear among the bridge crew or even as department heads. The Original Series notes them with a single bar on the uniform sleeve, while Strange New Worlds adds a second thinner bar above the lieutenant, junior grade's insignia. The Next Generation uses two colored pips on the collar — a method emulated by subsequent series.

Worf spends most of The Next Generation's later seasons as a lieutenant (he's promoted to lieutenant commander during the events of Star Trek Generations ) while Ro Laren is promoted to lieutenant shortly before her defection to the Maquis in The Next Generation Season 7, Episode 24, "Preemptive Strike." Lieutenants often occupy the helm position, including Hikaru Sulu in The Original Series, Keyla Detmer in Star Trek: Discovery , and Erica Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

4 Lieutenant Commanders Head up Departments

Lieutenant commanders hold positions of senior responsibility onboard a starship, even serving as executive officers or de facto captains on small ships. One larger ships, they often serve as the head of specific departments such as science and engineering. In The Original Series , the rank is designated with two stripes on the sleeve — one thick, one dashed — which Strange New Worlds adjusts to two thick colored bands. The Next Generation and subsequent shows note lieutenant commanders with two colored pips and one black one.

Montgomery Scott holds the rank of lieutenant commander in The Original Series , acting as Chief Engineer and even commanding the Enterprise when Kirk and Spock are away on missions. Similarly, Geordi La Forge rises to the rank of lieutenant commander in The Next Generation , joining Data and Deanna Troi at the position, though the latter eventually advances to commander. Worf and Jadzia Dax are both lieutenant commanders when they begin their romance on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Lastly, the original Number One — Una Chin-Riley on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — is a lieutenant commander.

3 Commanders Aid and Can Take Over the Captain's Dutires

After star trek: discovery, the 32nd century should be the franchise's new frontier.

Star Trek Discovery avoided a host of potential continuity issues by leaping 900 years into the future. The franchise as a whole should follow suit.

Commanders are usually the ship's executive officers, "Number Ones," who assist the captain in their duties and step up in the event the captain is incapacitated. Commanders are often viewed as captains in training, and ultimately destined for a ship of their own in the future. In some cases, commanders are the head authority on smaller ships or space stations. Chief medical officers often hold this position as well. They're delineated by two thick bands on their sleeves in The Original Series era and three colored pips on the collar in The Next Generation and later.

Mr. Spock holds the rank of commander during the events of The Original Series , serving double duty as chief science officer as well. He's been followed by the likes of William Riker on The Next Generation and Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Picard . In addition, Beverly Crusher and Leonard McCoy both hold the rank of commander, while Deanna Tori is promoted to commander in Season 7, Episode 16, "Thine Own Self." Ben Sisko also begins his tenure on Deep Space 9 as a commander before being promoted to full captain at the end of Season 3.

2 Captains Command Starfleet's Various Starships

The captain serves as the commander of a starship, with the entire crew ranked beneath them. This affords them a great deal of autonomy, but also equal amounts of responsibility. Starships must often face dangers alone in the far depths of space. It falls to the captain to make the final call when lives are at stake. Occasionally, captains can be found in other duties, such as commanding a star base or holds an administrative position on Earth. Captains are delineated by three stripes on their sleeves in the Original Series era — two thick, one dashed — which Strange New Worlds slightly alters to a single thin band sandwiched between two thicker ones. The Next Generation era uses four full pips on the collar.

Most Star Trek series use a captain as the main character, starting with James T. Kirk in The Original Series . Their ranks include Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, Christopher Pike, and Carol Freeman. In addition, many lower-ranking characters eventually attain the captain's chair, such as Will Riker, Tuvok, and Mr. Spock. Both Ben Sisko and Michael Burnham become captain after several seasons of climbing the ranks, a change from most Star Trek series which tend to begin with their captains in place.

1 Admirals Possess The Greatest Rank and Come to Represent Starfleet Itself

Gene roddenberry created star trek, but who is the woman behind the franchise.

Fans laud Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, but he didn't do it alone, with Dorothy D.C. Fontana being a very important woman in franchise history.

Admirals are Starfleet's major movers and shakers, placed in charge of entire fleets or overseeing vital operations. As flag officers, they no longer serve onboard starships, though they can claim command of one if circumstances dictate. James T. Kirk takes control of the Enterprise as an Admiral in both Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , while both Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy and Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard are the authority on their respective vessels.

In addition to giving successful captains a cushy desk job, Star Trek often uses admirals as stand-ins for Starfleet itself: either aiding the crew in their endeavors or standing in their way when they go against protocol. They're delineated by a wide variety of methods, and hold varying ranks within the admiralty, such as Vice Admiral and Commodore, that shift from project to project.

The Star Trek universe encompasses multiple series, each offering a unique lens through which to experience the wonders and perils of space travel. Join Captain Kirk and his crew on the Original Series' voyages of discovery, encounter the utopian vision of the Federation in The Next Generation, or delve into the darker corners of galactic politics in Deep Space Nine. No matter your preference, there's a Star Trek adventure waiting to ignite your imagination.

Early life [ ]

Una and her parents

Una and her parents in their youth

Chin-Riley was born on Illyria in the early 23rd century. As a member of the Illyrian species, Chin-Riley was genetically-engineered before birth , as it was part of her family tradition and heritage. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ") Her physical strength was greatly improved, allowing her to carry a grown person with no visible effort, while her immune system would also glow , and as well, could burn out infectious agents from her body without having to rely on antibodies . ( SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ", " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

Chin-Riley grew up on a Federation colony in the Vaultera Nebula . She had one brother . ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

When she was five or six years old, encountered Starfleet crew that visited her planet. According to her, " They were all so... different from one another. So many crew members from so many planets. It was beautiful. I thought if all those people from all those worlds can work together, side by side, maybe I could, too. Maybe I could be a part of something bigger than myself. " ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ") Her dream of joining Starfleet, however, due to the Federation ban on genetic engineering, she had to hide her true nature and history. ( SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ")

Later, she fractured her leg after she attempted to stop a fight at school, which had broken out after one boy had accused another of being an Illyrian. In spite of the break being a simple fix with modern medicine , her parents wouldn't take her to a hospital out of fear of being arrested. In spite of her modifications, the leg became infected , and she nearly died, until she was able to be treated by a Illyrian doctor who visited her family in the middle of the night. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

Starfleet career [ ]

Starfleet academy [ ].

Captain Robert April sponsored Chin-Riley's application to Starfleet Academy . ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

She first met Christopher Pike following an inspiring speech he gave at the Academy. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

She had Pelia for an Instructor for Starship Maintenance 307 and was given a "C" on her final paper, a "C" Pelia felt was sloppy but well deserved. ( SNW : " Lost in Translation ")

Early postings and assignments [ ]

In 2234 , Chin-Riley began her Starfleet career. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

As an ensign , was assigned to the USS Martin Luther King Jr. During her assignment aboard the " King Junior ", she was involved in the rescue of La'an Noonien-Singh . ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ")

While questioning Ensign Zier , Chin-Riley sympathized, saying that she, too, was once an ensign, and understood being nervous. ( SNW : " Spock Amok ")

At some point in her early career, Chin-Riley served aboard the USS Antares , the USS Chatelet , and the USS Aryabhatta , all ships that her future commanding officer Christopher Pike also served on. ( DIS : " Brother "; SNW : " Memento Mori ", " Ad Astra per Aspera "; display graphic )

According to Pike, Chin-Riley had a habit of jumping from department to department, although she claimed that it only happened once. ( SNW : " Children of the Comet ")

Service aboard the Enterprise [ ]

Una Chin-Riley, 2253

Number One on the bridge of the USS Enterprise

Upon her assignment as science officer to the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain April, she witnessed a triple-mode high-amplitude Delta Scuti star on her first deep-space cruise that took her within a half light year of 99 Pegasi . ( ST : " Q&A "; SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera "; display graphic )

In 2248 , Captain April recommended to Starfleet Command that Una Chin-Riley receive the Starfleet Medal of Gallantry for her actions during the Marcel disaster . ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

In 2250 , Chin-Riley was assigned as the first officer of Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike, also serving as the ship's helmsman . She went professionally by the name "Number One". ( TOS : " The Cage "; ST : " Q&A "; SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera " display graphic ) Before she took up her new position, Chin-Riley spent a week shadowing Pike, a week she later believed made all the difference in her performance as first officer. ( SNW : " Subspace Rhapsody ")

Una and Spock in the turbolift

Lieutenant Una Chin-Riley and Ensign Spock in 2253

In 2253 , Number One greeted Ensign Spock on his first day aboard the Enterprise after departing from Starbase 40 . She encouraged him to barrage her with questions, which he returned in kind. While talking, however, the two were trapped in a turbolift , where they bonded and Una gave advice to the young officer before they were rescued by Lieutenant Amin . ( ST : " Q&A "; SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ", " Among the Lotus Eaters " display graphic )

By 2254 , she was considered one of the most experienced members of the crew. According to the Talosian magistrate known as The Keeper , she had "the superior mind and would produce highly intelligent children", adding that, " Although she seems to lack emotion, this is largely a pretense. She has often had fantasies involving [Pike]. " ( TOS : " The Cage ")

Number One, Pike, Colt, and Vina imprisoned

Number One with the captives on Talos IV

With Pike kidnapped by the Talosians, Number One led the effort to rescue him, first by unsuccessfully attempting to use a laser cannon to blast open an entry to a Talosian underground lair where Pike was being held, and then by using the transporter in an attempt to infiltrate this lair. Number One was subsequently kidnapped, along with Yeoman Colt , for the purpose of providing Pike with a mate with whom he could procreate. In response to this, Una set her laser pistol to overload, telling the Talosian Keeper that it was wrong to keep a colony of Humans as slaves, and that they would rather die. This, combined with an examination of the Enterprise 's historical records, convinced the Talosians that Humans' unique hatred of captivity made them nonviable subjects, and they were subsequently allowed to return to the Enterprise . ( TOS : " The Cage ")

Footage of her experience aboard the Enterprise under Captain Pike during the original visit to Talos IV, from thirteen years prior, was transmitted from that planet during Spock's fictional court martial aboard the same ship in 2267 . ( TOS : " The Menagerie, Part I ", " The Menagerie, Part II ")

Like most of the Enterprise crew, Number One sat out the Klingon War which, like it did to everyone else aboard the Enterprise , took its toll on her. ( DIS : " Brother ")

Pike and Number One

Una lends a hand to Pike aboard Discovery

In 2257 , Chin-Riley remained with the ship while it underwent major repairs, only briefly visited Pike aboard the USS Discovery to provide him with information on Spock's recent escape from Starbase 5 . The two officers sat and talked briefly in the mess hall. During their conversation, Una admitted that she went through unofficial channels to obtain the information, noting that the entire situation was extremely odd. Una stated plainly that she was not going to let Spock go without a fight and Pike noted that as usual they both were in agreement. Before they parted she warned Pike to be careful and Pike told her the same. She returned to the Enterprise shortly thereafter. ( DIS : " An Obol for Charon ")

Number One, 2258

Number One in 2258

In 2258 , following the mission to get a time crystal from the monastery on Boreth , Christopher Pike asked R.A. Bryce to send a message to the Enterprise 's XO, Number One, to have the Enterprise rendezvous with the Discovery to take on the Discovery 's crew. ( DIS : " Through the Valley of Shadows ")

During the Battle near Xahea , Number One manned the helm of the Enterprise , and later worked with Admiral Katrina Cornwell in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to disarm an undetonated photon torpedo that had lodged in the saucer section 's hull .

After the disappearance of the Discovery , Pike, Ash Tyler , and Number One were debriefed at Starfleet Command in San Francisco . Following the debriefing, Number One and the others who knew of the Discovery 's fate were sworn to never speak of the Discovery or its crew again.

After a hundred and twenty four days of repair, Lieutenant Chin-Riley was still aboard the Enterprise as it traveled to Edrin II . ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 ")

In 2259 , the Enterprise returned to Earth for scheduled maintenance. Because she did not deal well with downtime, Number One was assigned to command the USS Archer to initiate a first contact mission to Kiley 279 after Starfleet detected signs of warp drive on the planet. However, the Kiley had in fact developed a warp bomb based on observations made from the battle near Xahea . The Kiley reacted negatively towards the first contact overtures and Number One, as well as the two other members of the Archer 's crew, were wounded and captured by the Kiley.

After Number One and the Archer crew were rescued by Pike and an Enterprise away team, Number One returned to her post as first officer of the Enterprise . ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ")

When the Enterprise was infected by a light virus , Una proved to be the only person immune to it, due to her undisclosed status as a genetically modified Illyrian . With Captain Pike trapped on the surface of a former Illyrian colony , Una assumed command and initiated a ship-wide lockdown . While she could not pass antibodies on directly to the crew to cure the contagion , she was able to engineer a situation where she could induce the same antibodies in La'an Noonien-Singh , which could then be used to save the others. When the crisis had passed Una disclosed her genetic identity to Pike and offered her resignation, but he refused to accept it as he considered Una 'the best first officer in the fleet'. ( SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ")

Una was seriously injured during a surprise attack by the Gorn , sustaining shrapnel wounds to her abdomen that could not be treated conventionally due to battle damage. With dwindling medical supplies available, Una ordered that the last remaining supply of blood plasma be given to another injured crewmember that needed it. Christine Chapel was able to treat her wounds with her knowledge of archaeological medicine , and Joseph M'Benga donated his own blood to aid Una's recovery, ignoring the stigma that existed at the time regarding Humans and Illyrians sharing blood. ( SNW : " Memento Mori ")

When an alien consciousness from the Jonisian Nebula brought the fairy tale The Kingdom of Elysian to life on the Enterprise , Una was used for the character of Z'ymira the Huntress. Una had no memory of the events after the ship was returned to normal. ( SNW : " The Elysian Kingdom ")

While Captain Pike resolved to protect her from Starfleet, Una was arrested a few months later when her illegal genetic status was revealed. When a team of officers from the USS Cayuga arrived to arrest Una, Pike physically intervened on her behalf. Una warned him not to fight back, as she had known that such an outcome was likely. As she was beamed away, Captain Pike vowed that he would fight on her behalf. ( SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Una's commendations, by the time of her arrest, included Starfleet Award of Valor , Medal of Excellence , Order of Tactics , Legion of Honor , and Medal of Commendation . ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera " display graphic )

Una remained in Starfleet custody pending trial for concealing her genetic heritage, while Captain Pike attempted to secure her a good lawyer. ( SNW : " The Broken Circle ")

Before her court martial , Una was offered a deal by Captain Marie Batel where Una would go free in exchange for a dishonorable discharge , but she refused the deal. Subsequently and in retaliation, two sedition charges were added (falsifying her records and violating Starfleet's code against genetic engineering ), leaving Una facing twenty years in a Federation penal colony .

Pike was able to secure Una the help of her former best friend Neera Ketoul , who used Una's trial as a platform to overturn the genetic modification law, and to broadcast her hatred of Federation policies regarding Illyrians. Katoul had Una retell the history of discrimination and persecution that she had faced, eventually admitting that she had turned herself in, as she was tired of living a lie. Katoul argued that, in essence, Una had sought asylum with Starfleet from the hardships she faced for being an Illyrian, and that Pike had exercised his judgement and granted it to Una after she had revealed herself to him .

Although the Federation wasn't willing to change their laws regarding genetic engineering for the time being, Una was acquitted, officially granted asylum and allowed to return to duty as first officer of the Enterprise . Una reconciled with Katoul, who saw Una's exoneration (and being allowed to openly serve as an Illyrian commander on a Federation starship) as a first step towards change. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

Una Chin-Riley's recruitment poster

A Starfleet recruitment poster featuring Una Chin-Riley

Despite Starfleet's attempt to use Una as a scapegoat for their anti-Augment stance, Una would go on to be remembered as one of the finest first officers in Federation history. By 2381 , recruitment posters featuring Una were widely distributed, with Ensign Brad Boimler keeping one in his bunk onboard the USS Cerritos , citing it and her as his inspiration for joining Starfleet. Una was initially horrified to learn of her status as a 'pin-up' from Beckett Mariner , but was deeply moved upon learning the full context, particularly due to the poster's use of Starfleet's "Ad Astra per Aspera" motto. ( SNW : " Those Old Scientists ")

Personal interests [ ]

Hobbies [ ].

Chin-Riley secretly enjoyed the music of Gilbert and Sullivan . When trapped in a turbolift with Spock on his first day on the Enterprise , she sang " I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General ", but ordered Spock to forget it. ( ST : " Q&A "; SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

She also enjoyed spicy food. When she met Pike on Discovery , she ordered a cheeseburger and french fries with habanero sauce . ( DIS : " An Obol for Charon ") Her comfort food, however, was strawberries . ( SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ")

Relationships [ ]

La'an noonien-singh [ ].

Una and La'an met when Chin-Riley met when she was an Ensign aboard the USS Martin King, Jr. . The two would strike up a friendship that would last for a long time. La'an would affectionally call Una "Chief", and Una would come to act as a mentor for her. ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ")

Christopher Pike [ ]

Pike and Una hug

Pike and Una hugging

Una and Christopher Pike first met when he gave a speech to her Academy class about a test mission he had flown. Following Pike's speech, Chin-Riley approached him and pointed out a flaw he had made during reentry. He found it bold and annoying but recognized that she was correct. Over the years, the two would be assigned to several vessels including the USS Enterprise . When Pike was made captain of the Enterprise he promoted Chin-Riley to First officer. ( SNW : " Strange New Worlds ", " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

When Pike learned of Chin-Riley's Illyrian heritage, he told her that he didn't care and that he would deal with fallout with Starfleet. ( SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ")

Una would keep a photograph of the two of them in her quarters aboard the Enterprise . Upon her return to the ship following her exoneration, a visibly relieved Pike hugged Una before regaining his composure. ( SNW : " Ad Astra per Aspera ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

In an alternate timeline where Pike was able to avoid his crippling fate, he asked La'an Noonien-Singh about Una. La'an told him that Una wasn't allowed to have contact with anyone. Spock later revealed that in this timeline, Una had been locked up in a Federation prison colony for nearly seven years for her illegal modifications. ( SNW : " A Quality of Mercy ")

Background information [ ]

Number One, 2254

Number One's original portrayal by Majel Barrett

Number One was originally portrayed by Majel Barrett in the Star Trek pilot, "The Cage", but credited as M. Leigh Hudec for her subsequent archival appearance featured in both episodes of "The Menagerie". When her character was reintroduced for Star Trek: Discovery , and its subsequent spin-offs, she was portrayed by Rebecca Romijn . Additionally, Anna Claire Beitel portrayed Una as a child in "Ad Astra per Aspera".

In the original version of the series outline Star Trek is... (as reprinted in The Making of Star Trek , pp. 22-30), Number One was initially described as "a glacierlike, efficient female who serves as ship's Executive Officer." ( The Making of Star Trek , p. 24) A more detailed description of the character from exactly the same document stated;

In the scripts of "The Cage", Number One was described as " Female, slim and dark in a Nile Valley way, age uncertain, one of those women who will always look the same between the ages of twenty and fifty [....] Almost glacier-like in her imperturbability and precision. From time to time we'll wonder just how much female exists under that icy facade. " She was also scripted to be slightly more wary of J.M. Colt than she is in the final version of the episode, such as being initially reluctant about allowing her to join a landing party assigned to rescue the captain. [1]

Number One was dropped from the series as NBC executives did not respond well to her character. Reactions to her in the screen test of "The Cage" were also poor (by the women more negatively than the men, according to Gene Roddenberry ). Her highly logical, steel-trap mind was given to the character of Spock in " Where No Man Has Gone Before " and maintained there onward.

Although Majel Barrett-Roddenberry was credited as Majel Barrett in the unaired episode "The Cage", she was credited as "M. Leigh Hudec" – Barrett's birth name – in the televised two-part episode " The Menagerie, Part I " and " The Menagerie, Part II ", because the production team was endeavoring to hide from NBC the fact that the actress, not to be signed for either the second pilot or the regular show as had been demanded by the network, had actually returned to Star Trek: The Original Series as the recurring Nurse Christine Chapel by Gene Roddenberry's doing. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , 1997, pp. 223-224; These Are the Voyages: TOS Season One , 1st ed, pp. 25-27) An unintended ironic twist in Star Trek history was that when Roddenberry surreptitiously brought the natural brunette Barrett back on the Original Series , he had her also disguised as a blonde to mislead the NBC network executives, who adamantly did not want her back on the show, whereas the natural blonde Romijn had to have her hair dyed to have her appear as the brunette Number One in Discovery .

In " The Cage ", Number One was referred to as "lieutenant." Within Starfleet, it was rare for a lieutenant to serve as the first officer of a starship. The likely reason she was originally assigned this rank was that, when Gene Roddenberry first created Star Trek , the rank structure he employed was based on that of the 18th and 19th century Royal Navy, in which a ship's second in command was generally a first lieutenant , rather than the ranks used by the 20th century United States Navy we have come to associate with Starfleet. George Kirk is the only other known instance of a lieutenant serving as a ship's first officer.

In Number One's subsequent appearances in Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Short Treks , her rank insignia is indicates she was a lieutenant, although she was identified as a lieutenant commander on a PADD in " Q&A ", which takes place before "The Cage". By Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Chin-Riley wore the insignia of lieutenant commander and has been repeatedly identified as such in the show. There was at least one instance, however, where, in an apparent art design error, she is clearly listed as "Lt. Una" on an internal communication in the episode " Subspace Rhapsody ".

"Lieutenant Commander Una"

Did I mumble?

In an interview with TrekCore, the co-writer of " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 " and Star Trek: Discovery third season co-showrunner Michelle Paradise confirmed that Christopher Pike called Number One "Una" in that episode. [2] This is one of several names which had been used for this character in non-canon material. Subtitles on Netflix and the second season Blu-ray release misspelled it as "Noona" (the Netflix subtitles have since been corrected), while the CBSAA captions say that he merely said "and, uh..." while transitioning to a question directed at Admiral Cornwell. Dialogue and PADD graphics in the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " Q&A " definitively confirm that Number One's name is "Una," and that she insists on being addressed as "Number One".

According to The Autobiography of Mr. Spock , Una's full name is Una Chin-Riley, a fact later revealed in the Strange New Worlds premiere episode "Strange New Worlds".

Apocrypha [ ]

In the Marvel Star Trek: Early Voyages comic book series, this character was named Lieutenant Commander Robbins. Her first name was interrupted by other dialogue, but starts with "Eure-."

The novel Vulcan's Glory , by Star Trek: The Original Series writer D.C. Fontana , suggested this character's moniker was not simply a nickname or title – she was an Illyrian who was called "Number One," as the best intellect among her generation. The novels The Children of Kings and Child of Two Worlds explain that Number One does have a given name, but it's difficult to pronounce for non-Illyrians; the former suggests that she liked to be called by this name rather than her own as it enabled her to maintain a professional relationship with her captain. The novel The Enterprise War describes her as having been raised in Illyrian colonies and thus, while not actually being Illyrian herself, having adapted much of that species' emotional self-control. Her actually being Illyrian and raised in an Illyrian colony was confirmed canon in SNW : " Ghosts of Illyria ".

In the novel Captain to Captain she is referred to as "Una". The novel explained that she had adopted the name Una as far back as her Academy days, due to her real name being all but impossible to pronounce. The name "Una" was also used in the Star Trek: Discovery novel Desperate Hours and was subsequently used in DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 " and ST : " Q&A ".

Star Trek II: Biographies gives her real name as Leigh Hudec (after "M. Leigh Hudec", the name under which Majel Barrett was credited in The Cage ).

Peter David 's New Frontier series of novels had a character named "Morgan Primus" who was an immortal like Flint (from TOS : " Requiem for Methuselah ") and was the mother of Robin Lefler . It is hinted that she and Number One are the same person.

In the Captain's Table novel Where Sea Meets Sky , Number One was given the last name "Lefler" (an allusion to Robin Lefler ).

The early days of Number One were chronicled in the IDW Publishing miniseries Star Trek: Crew .

In the IDW Publishing comic Star Trek: Romulans - Schism , she is a commodore in command of the USS Yorktown testing the cloaking device stolen from the Romulans during the events of " The Enterprise Incident ". No name is mentioned.

In the miniseries Star Trek: Leonard McCoy, Frontier Doctor , Number One was promoted to admiral in the 2270s and continued to command the Yorktown .

In the first issue of the 2013 comic series Star Trek: New Visions , Kirk, Spock, and McCoy report to a commodore who is not named but is clearly Number One and Spock did say it was pleasant to see her again.

In Who's Who in Star Trek , Number One is said to have been descended from colonists on a planet inhabited by telepathic humanoids who are peaceful. She is described as having entered Starfleet after saving the life of Earth's leader when his shuttle crashed on her planet, he having waived all psychological and physical testing on her behalf. She is also described as having suffered severe injuries just prior to the end of Pike's tenure as captain of the Enterprise , forcing her to retire from exploration and become an instructor at Starfleet Academy .

Avro Arrow said: ↑ It is confusing, at least compared to what we've seen before. But then again, there have been a number of errors around costuming and dialogue related to rank in previous series, too. Pike has the two wide, one narrow that we've come to expect for captains. Una has two wide, but is a lieutenant commander. Not sure if this is a "mistake", or a deliberate callback to TOS season 1, when they did the same thing for Spock, Finney and Giotto. (But McCoy and Scotty had one-and-a-half for the same rank.) Una had one wide, one narrow in Discovery season 2, but I don't remember if her rank was mentioned in dialogue. Kirk is a lieutenant, and has one wide. (This matches full lieutenant from TOS.) Spock, Ortegas and La'an are all lieutenants and have one wide, one narrow. Possibly this is a change in the system from what we saw from TOS, and it now represents full lieutenant, while one stripe is lieutenant J.G.? Spock only had a single wide stripe in Discovery season 2, and was also called a lieutenant. Hemmer is apparently also a lieutenant, and he has two wide, like Una. This one is harder to explain, unless he is also a lieutenant commander who was accidentally called lieutenant, like Shelby was once. As mentioned above, M'Benga and Chapel both have two wide, but AFAIK their ranks haven't been mentioned in dialogue. As @The Wormhole mentioned, the first episode implied Chapel may be a civilian, but it's also possible she got some kind of provisional rank, similar to the Maquis on Voyager. Ensign Christina appears to have no stripes, just like in TOS. I had thought that maybe if they bumped up each of the higher grades, they might have given ensigns a narrow stripe to differentiate them from non-officer crew, but that doesn't seem to be the case. If lieutenant J.G, lieutenant, and lieutenant commander were all bumped up one level from what we saw in TOS, then I'm not sure what would represent full commander. They could have made it two wide, one narrow, if they had given Pike three wide. (Also, I find the red and blue stripes hard to see, but that's neither here nor there. ) Click to expand...

IRL, if you’re passed over promotion too many times (I think it’s 3 or 4 times maybe), you’re discharged, as it is assumed you’ve reached your maximum level of incompetence.

Someone posted a handy reference chart on Twitter... (My apologies... this was just down in the "Other Tweets" section and I forgot to grab an attribution.) To be fair to the admirals, though, they seem to have the same system, just the stripes are on their shoulders instead of their cuffs. April's looks like one of the extra-wide stripes with one wide stripe on either side, just like Admiral Fitzpatrick from TOS. Or perhaps April is just really into Mass Effect cosplay... (Yes, this image was flipped horizontally to accentuate the similarities. )
Yeah…. I do not like those shoulder boards at all.

Strange New Worlds Starfleet Duty Uniform – Tunic Variants

rank insignia star trek strange new worlds

Over the years, I have had grand plans to recreate Starfleet uniforms. So far, none have come to fruition. But when I saw there was an exhibit of the new costumes from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, I hopped on the train and headed down, camera and seam gauge in tow. I’d never been to the Paley Center for Media and didn’t know how busy it gets (spoiler alert: not very). I got to spend some quality alone-time with the uniforms.

This is only the first post. I took photos of all the costumes and props there and will post them as time permits. The others include Command Dress, Operations Dress, Medical Labcoat, Medical Jumpsuit, Cadet Dress Uniform, Field Jacket, and various non uniform costumes, tricorder, communicator, phaser, memorial pins, Vulcan pendant, and Illyrian scroll.

Without further ado, on to the good stuff.

Command Division, circa 225

Authorized for wear by those personnel specializing in the command and control tasks aboard starships as well as ground and space-based installations, along with Starfleet Command’s upper leadership hierarchy. The assigned division is represented by the uniform tunic’s gold color, with the officer’s rank denoted by stripes on the tunic’s sleeves.

This version of the Command Division Starfleet Duty Uniform is worn by actor Anson Mount for his portrayal of Captain Christopher Pike. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Sciences Division, circa 2259

Authorized for those personnel assigned to any of the numerous science-based disciplines typical of starship’s crew, along with similar tasks performed by officers detailed to starbases and other permanent facilities. Examples of typical specializations include biological studies, technicians including sensor and other computer-based information collection and analysis, medics, nurses, and surgeons. The assigned division is depicted via teh uniform tunic’s prevailing blue color, with the officer’s rank displayed on the tunic’s sleeves.

This uniform is worn by actor Ethan Peck for his portrayal of Lieutenant Spock. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Operations Division, circa 2259

Worn by Starfleet personnel specializing in the communications, engineering, security, and tactical functions aboard starships as well as starbases and planet-based installations. The uniform tunic’s predominant maroon color indicates the assigned division, with the wearer’s rank denoted by the stripes on the tunic’s sleeves.

This version of the Operations Division Starfleet Duty Uniform is worn by actress Christina Chong for her portrayal of Lieutenant La’An Noonien Singh. It is a creation of costume designers Bernadette Croft and Gersha Phillips and the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds costume department.

Color Reference

To ensure accurate colors I used Color Checker Passport for white balance and normalized exposure using the grey swatches. Except for when showing details on darker photos, I’ve tried to keep exposure consistent.

UPDATE: Thanks to the Star Trek Costume Group on Facebook and an awesome member who snapped a photo of the actual Pantones used for the costumes. They were shared at Star Trek: Mission Chicago by the costume designer Bernadette Croft. The official colors are below. Additionally, Pantone sells individual fabric swatches for each of their colors directly on their website.

Division Fabric (Downloads)

rank insignia star trek strange new worlds

The raised superhero-esque print used on these uniforms sits much more flush with the fabric than the deltas on the Discovery uniforms. I scaled the image to actual size in Illustrator, then traced and averaged the pattern before tiling it. Since the fabric was not laying flat, I only based the traced pattern on the center of the frame and closest to the ruler to minimize distortion.

Below are PDF files you can download. One suitable for large applications sized 30″x60″ and another smaller 8 1/2″x11″. Print at 100%. Do not scale.

Sciences planet pattern downloads, operations swirl pattern downloads, the naughty bits.

Here are the photos liable to land me in the brig. Well, if not the brig, at least a stern dressing down by museum staff. In addition to laying my ruler all over the place, I took a peek underneath. Was it worth the risk?

Fabric: Unlike the Discovery uniforms which use a 4-way stretch woven material from Schoeller, this appears to use some kind of bonded knit microfiber.

Waistband: Even more interesting, the waistband is covered entirely in elastic. I didn’t dig any further to figure out what was going on, figuring I’d tempted the museum gods enough. This could be an alteration made for the exhibit or perhaps pregnancy pants have caught on for everyone in the 23rd century.

Flyzip: The zipper is attached very close to the opening.

Love the division fabric pattern downloads, any chance of getting them as PNGs or some other format with a transparent background?

Search Google for ‘PDF to PNG converter’ there are a bunch of free ones. The PDFs dont contain backgrounds so they should convert to transparent PNG easily.

I love the detail you were able to acquire. I noticed you mentioned the fly difference for the ops uniforms. I just wanted to note that difference is a gender differentiation. This is mainly a tradition thing but if someone wants to maintain the authenticity as much as possible, men would wear the pant examples from command and sciences and women would wear the pant example from ops.

This blog has simultaneously saved me from some misguided ideas and set me on a path of tons more work. Thank you for these detailed measurements, photos and files.

Hi, i just discovered your blog. I’m really impressed with the attention to detail you’ve shown here. Did you ever make one of the uniforms?

I seem to be perpetually in the planning phase but I’m hoping this year I get something made haha

Where do the Strange New Worlds fall in Star Trek’s uniform rankings?

By chad porto | jun 13, 2022.

Star Trek is known for its uniforms but where does Strange New Worlds rank?

Star Trek is known as much for its uniforms as its aliens. The uniforms in Star Trek are, to put it bluntly, simply iconic. Very few science fiction series have nailed the uniforms as well as Star Trek has done.

And they did it again with Strange New Worlds, another example of great costuming in the franchise . Yet, where do they all rank?

For simplicity’s sake, let’s look at the candidates starting with the series. We have the original series, with their gold blue, and red shirts and dresses. Then we have The Next Generation era uniforms, which also bled into Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Then we have the First Contact uniforms which also were used in Voyager and Deep Space Nine. For the sake of things, we’re just going to call them the 90’s black jumpers and the 90s grey jumpers.

Then we have the blue jumpsuits of Enterprise, the blue and gold jumpsuits of Discovery, then we have the more traditional colored uniforms from after their time jump. We have the more condensed black uniforms seen in Picard, the more traditional ones used in Lower Decks, and the cadet suits from Prodigy.

We’re also going to be ranking the white and grey uniforms from The Motion Picture and the subsequent films’ red jacket uniforms.

This is a personal opinion list, you’ll have your own and we’d love to hear from you but be mindful that this is our list.

Ranking the uniforms of Strange New Worlds and the rest of Star Trek

12. discovery’s blue and gold jumpsuits.

The worst of the worst, they look simple and unordinary. It was fine when Enterprise did it, as they had a budget that totaled an old shoe book and some crayons, but Discovery had hundreds of millions of dollars for its first season. Yes, they tried to pay homage to a point of the Enterprise uniforms but that’s part of the issue. They weren’t very good either, and it felt less like an homage than an uncreative re-imagining.

11. Enterprise’s Blue Jumpsuits

The section colors of the Starfleet uniforms are the best part of the uniforms, and Enterprise just teased us with them. I love Enterprise, personal top-two series, but I never liked the uniforms.

10. The Original Series’ Colored Shirts

They were a byproduct of their time. Very ordinary now and while they’re nostalgic, we’re ranking these through a modern lens. Incredibly dated for its time.

9. Discovery’s Power Ranger Look

The Discovery uniform post-time jump saw their uniforms get updated, but I agree with those that think they look like Power Rangers costumes without the helmets. Yet, my issue is the opposite, I don’t mind that they look like Power Rangers, I mind that they only kinda look like Power Rangers. Go all the way or don’t go at all.

8. Star Trek’s II-VI’s Red Jackets

The original design was great, but they used them for five movies and the novelty of them wore off. Great design but overstayed their welcome.

7. The Motion Picture Silver and Whites

Maybe it’s the novelty of how short they were around, but I really liked the white outfits. They were stylish and cool and weren’t overused to the point of exhaustion.

6. 90’s Black Jumpers

The classics. They came with the color being on the shoulders or on the body, either way, they were dope. They lasted for as long as they should’ve and then were reimagined.

5. Lower Decks’ Animated Uniforms

They updated the original jumpers from the 90s with a nice twist. These too, I feel, are very “Power Ranger-y” but I like that about them. They have a personality about them.

4. Prodigy’s Cadet Uniforms

These are simple, understated, and elegant. They have a softness to them that makes you feel warm and cozy.

3. Picard’s Black Uniforms

The show might have its detractors and for good reasons but man, their Starfleet uniforms are awesome. I thought about putting them last, simply due to the lack of the uniforms but this isn’t a list about how frequent we see them, but how great they are. So here it is.

2. 90’s Grey Jumpers

With First Contact, we saw the jumpers go from black with some color to grey and black with the officer’s undershirt serving as their division’s color.

1. Strange New Worlds Tunic’s

When it all shakes out, I think the Strange New Worlds tunics are the best. They’re classic and modern all in the same twist. They highlight the divisions of the ship beautifully and they don’t shy away from colors. And the colors are awesome.

When is 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 coming out, where can you watch 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, is there a trailer for 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, who's in the 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 cast, who are the creators of 'star trek: strange new worlds', when did 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 film, what's the plot of 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 about, is 'star trek: strange new worlds' getting a season 4, more shows like 'star trek: strange new worlds' that you can watch right now.

It's a huge sigh of relief when a spinoff of a classic like the original Star Trek (which ran from 1966 to 1969) is well done, polished, and gripping. Especially when that show stands out in a franchise with twelve - yes, you read that right - twelve corresponding series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which serves as a prequel to the original (and iconic) Star Trek series, follows Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) as he leads his crew through the galaxy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show, which premiered in 2022, was met with high critical acclaim from the beginning and continues to find fans with each new season - an impressive feat in a time when so many shows get lost in the streaming shuffle. Now renewed for a third season right after its Season 2 finale, here's everything we know so far about the next chapter in the epic space adventure.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window was from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Subscriptions to Paramount+ are available in two tiers: Paramount+ Essential (with commercials, $5.99/month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (commercial-free, $11.99/month).

WATCH ON PARAMOUNT+

With production recently ending, there is still no official footage from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. That said, we hope to get our first look at the new season sometime later this year. Stay tuned to Collider as we await more info.

Leading the charge is fan-favorite Captain Pike , played by Anson Mount. Mount is no stranger to the Star Trek world, as he also appeared in Star Trek: Discovery in 2019. His other credits include films like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Britney Spears -led 2002 drama Crossroads . Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

The series was originally set to film early in 2023 but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the series was delayed by several months. Thankfully, they recently wrapped up filming in Canada earlier this year. Anson Mount took to Instagram to celebrate the conclusion of filming.

Mount also wrote a heartfelt message to fans after concluding production, saying:

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on season 3, at least from me, there’s still a little bit of work to be done. I feel like I could sleep for a week, but I still have many travels and many things ahead of me to do, and I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shots here. Thank you for your patience, especially during the strikes, it wasn’t anyone’s intention for us to be delayed to that extent. Thank you for sticking with us, thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans, I am one of you and it’s because of people like you that I get to live out my dreams like this and I’ll never stop thanking you for having me in your house.”

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again.

To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

There are still many more stories to be told and strange new worlds to explore. In a surprise to no one, Paramount+ has already renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fourth season. Mount took to Instagram , saying:

"We’ll see you again in the spring when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes back into production for Season 4!"

The Mandalorian (2019-)

Disney+'s runaway hit The Mandalorian has taken the world - and the internet - by storm. Premiering in 2019, show creator and showrunner Jon Favreau ( Chef ) has confirmed that Season 4 has already been written. The series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ), as he travels through the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Oh, and let's not forget about his companion, the now-iconic Grogu AKA Baby Yoda . WATCH ON DISNEY+

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

In the spirit of revisiting classic sci-fi television, for an updated version of the original Battlestar Galactica , try 2004's refreshed version. While not entirely a remake, it offers a more modern view of the cult classic, which originally ran from 1978-1979. Starring Edward James Olmos ( Stand and Deliver ), Mary McDonnell ( Donnie Darko ), Jamie Bamber ( Law and Order: UK ), and, who can forget, Katee Sackhoff 's iconic Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the show is sure to hit that same, familiar space exploration note.

Lost In Space (2018-2021)

For another modernized take on a classic, try the remake of Lost in Space , based on the original that ran from 1965-1968. The Robinsons are a family who wanted to start over on a space colony (very relatable), but they end up on an uncharted alien planet instead and must struggle for survival. The remake stars Toby Stephens ( Die Another Day ) and Molly Parker ( The Wicker Man ) as Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and ran for three seasons on Netflix.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be Our Best Season So Far, Says Anson Mount

  • Anson Mount hails season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as the best yet, with even bigger storytelling risks and surprises.
  • Season 3 wrapped production in May 2024, with a renewal for season 4 already in the pipeline, sparking high audience anticipation.
  • Mount teases exciting developments in season 3, including bold creative choices that will surpass previous seasons.

Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, enthusiastically calls Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 "our best season so far". Strange New Worlds season 3 wrapped six months of production right before Memorial Weekend 2024. While there is no release date yet from Paramount+, Strange New Worlds received an early season 4 renewal , with production expected to start up again in Spring 2025. Meanwhile, audience anticipation is sky-high, especially after the cliffhanger ending of Strange New Worlds season 2 in August 2023.

In an interview with Gold Derby , Anson Mount discussed the success of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Season 2 of Strange New Worlds regularly charted in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, and the series hit highs with its biggest risks, a comedic crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode. Without divulging spoilers, Mount teased the "even bigger swings" in Strange New Worlds season 3, promising that the musical "will not be the craziest thing that we did" by the time it's over. Read Anson's quote below:

I think its not just an exciting season, I think storytelling wise, development-wise, technically; its going to be our best season so far and a lot of that has to do with even bigger swings being taken. The musical episode will not be the craziest thing that we did or we have done by the end of this. Were feeling more ownership over what it is that were doing and realizing that it continues to resonate.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 ended with an epic cliffhanger and here's everything known about when it will be resolved in season 3.

What Could Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3's Big Swings Be?

How to they top the musical episode.

It's hard to imagine how Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 can top season 2's crossover and musical, but Anson Mount believes they do. Strange New Worlds season 3 is shrouded in secrecy, but a few dollops of information have emerged. For instance, J onathan Frakes is directing an episode of Strange New Worlds season 3 that's been touted as a "Hollywood murder mystery" , which could certainly be as out-of-the-box as Strange New Worlds ' musical.

Martin Quinn is also returning as Lt. Montgomery Scott AKA Scotty in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

Strange New Worlds is also debuting a new Science Lab set on the USS Enterprise , and many of the top directors from season 2 like Frakes, Chris Fisher, Valerie Weiss, Dan Liu, and Jordan Canning, are back behind the camera for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. It's safe to assume storylines like Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) leaving the Enterprise for her archaeological medicine internship with Dr. Roger Korby , and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh's (Christina Chong) will-they-or-won't-they love story with Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) will continue. It's best to believe Anson Mount that when it comes to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, audiences haven't seen anything yet.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 on Paramount+, Where The Crew Of The USS Enterprise Keep On Seeking The Great Unknown

‘Star Trek III’ at 40: The Story of How (and Why) Leonard Nimoy Brought Spock Back After Being Killed Off In ‘The Wrath of Khan’

‘star trek: strange new worlds’ renewed for season 4 at paramount+, bill maher applauds william shatner for controversial ‘star trek’ interracial kiss, patrick stewart was asked to wear a wig at his ‘star trek’ audition — a wig that flew by itself from heathrow to lax.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns to Paramount+ with its prime directive in place, which is to explore the adventures and trials of the USS Enterprise and crew in the years immediately preceding the events of the original Trek. After debuting as a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery , SNW enters its sophomore season Emmy-nominated and fully established, and returns the strong ensemble that brought humor, gravity, and familiar Trek universe pathos to the 23rd century, minus an open position at chief engineer, which is quickly addressed in the season two premiere. So, who’s up for a few more rounds of that volatile and savory Klingon bloodwine?

STAR TREK – STRANGE NEW WORLDS SEASON 2 : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: As shuttlecraft dart to and fro around a series of massive circular platforms in space, we hear the voice of Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). “Captain’s log, stardate 2369.2. The Enterprise is in spacedock at Starbase 1.” It’s also shore leave for half of the crew, as inspections and systems checks continue under the sharp eye of chief lead inspector, Commander Pelia (Carol Kane).

The Gist: With his starship currently in stasis, Pike figures he’s got time to try and influence the case against Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Una Chin-Riley, who at the end of Strange New Worlds season one was arrested for concealing her Illyrian heritage from Starfleet. So Pike takes some personal time, leaving Spock (Ethan Peck) in charge, and of course that’s when trouble immediately pops off. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) was on a leave of absence from her duties as Enterprise’s security chief to help the young refugee of a Gorn attack locate her people. (It’s personal; La’an’s own family was murdered by the reptilian Starfleet foes.) Now, La’an has transmitted a distress signal to the Enterprise. She’s on a remote dilithium mining planet, caught up in an extremist conflict that threatens to reignite the Starfleet-Klingon war, and she needs an assist. No problem – all Spock’s gotta do is steal the Enterprise from spacedock. And this he readily does with the help of Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) at the helm, newly promoted ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) on comms and linguistics, Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), chief medical officer Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), and an unlikely new ally: Pelia, the Starfleet inspector, who appoints herself chief engineer of the Enterprise. It’s a vacant position, after the tragic loss of Hemmer (Bruce Horak) in season one.

In that first go-round, Strange New Worlds quickly established a knack for contained, episodic storytelling, a conscious hew away from dramatic season-long arcs. It was a singular approach that brought it closer to the format of Star Trek: The Original Series — with every new episode, a new challenge to confront, not to mention a different tone — and those similarities are even more key now that SNW is flirting with what’s become finite: Trek franchise lore has the action in this series occurring just a few years before the classic Enterprise voyages of James T. Kirk and Co, so the two Trek franchises are on a narrative collision course.

For Spock and his shipmates on their unsanctioned mission, locating La’an is the easy part. And while they’re able to offer help toward her cause, they’re also inserted into a few sticky situations with some rogue Klingons, whose unruly demeanor (pretty typical) and hoarding of Starfleet tech and materiel (decidedly not typical) triggers post-traumatic stress in M’Benga and Chapel – plus their fighting spirit – and pushes Spock into a life-or-death decision as he faces down a Klingon bird-of-prey from the captain’s chair of the Enterprise.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck began playing Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock on Star Trek: Discovery before Strange New Worlds debuted its first season in spinoff form. But with its success amongst fans and critics alike, it’s clear that SNW can now stand officially on its own, so much so that there’s an exciting crossover planned for season two, with live-action versions of the characters from the animated Star Trek series Lower Decks .

Our Take: It’s quite a choice, and a very conscious one, to have the top-billed star and chief of the Enterprise, otherwise known as Anson Mount and his terrific take on Captain Christopher Pike, peace out five minutes into the season two premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . But it’s not a spoiler to say that Pike never joins Spock and the core crew of the Enterprise on their impulsive mission to help their shipmate on a fringe planet, because we never even miss him. That’s just how capable the ensemble is on SNW . Any one of them, from Babs Olusanmokun and Jess Bush’s Dr. M’Benga and Nurse Chapel in sickbay, to Melissa Navia and Celia Rose Gooding’s Erica Ortegas and Nyota Uhura on the bridge, are able to carry a storyline. And it’s this collective strength in casting and characters that helps SNW expand on how it approaches tone, plotting, and the greater subtleties at work in the Star Trek universe. Pike, when he is around, usually leads the away team. But just like the character’s leadership style, the manner of this is never one dimensional. In the space – and, er, space – of one season’s adventures, Strange New Worlds has established a new set of compelling, instantly memorable characters who are at ease with one another, and which allow the actors playing them the ability to explore. Season two, already off to a great start, will undoubtedly offer even more depth to these personalities we’ve come to know.

Sex and Skin: Last season, after he faked an affair with Nurse Chapel to get the Enterprise out of its latest dangerous jam, Spock reaffirmed his bond with T’Pring (Gia Sandhu), his Vulcan betrothed, and he and Chapel declared themselves to be just friends. And yet there remains a powerful bond between them. Could Chapel’s mention here of an upcoming academic fellowship on Vulcan eventually play into her relationship with Spock? Only a mind meld would tell.

Parting Shot: Before he lit off to help Number One, Pike mentioned in his captain’s log a whiff of something unclear beneath the buttoned-up veneer of the Starfleet brass, a tension undefined. There’s some clarity in that department by episode’s end, and as the higher-ups say, it could be an all hands on deck situation.

Sleeper Star: “This is an antimatter detonation switch. You better hope I don’t let go, unless you’re keen on losing the bottom half of your body.” Since she joined the Enterprise as its security chief, La’an Noonien-Singh has proven to be steely, strong, resourceful, and resilient, all qualities Christina Chong continues to wonderfully impart to the character in season two of SNW .

Most Pilot-y Line: When he’s presented with a half-human, half-Vulcan suddenly suffering the physical effects of stress, Dr. M’Benga has a sense of what’s happening. “When you released your anger to combat the Gorn,” he tells Spock, the cognitive blocks Vulcans employ to constrict emotion were removed. And while this will be an ongoing evolution for Spock – M’Benga gifts him a space lute to help relieve his stress – it might also set an important precedent for encounters with the Gorn going forward.

Our Call: STREAM IT. No longer just a spinoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes boldly into its second season with terrific crew chemistry, more far-flung adventures on tap, and even more depth added to characters who already feel like classics.
