Why is this game only available on current gen (PS5, Xbox X|S, and PC) gaming systems?

On PC, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR can run at 30 fps, 60 fps, or unlocked framerate. Consoles (Xbox X|S and PS 5) will run 30 fps.

We understand that some players have a strong visual preference for higher framerate in their video games and we’ve heard community feedback surrounding the fps of the game on console. As a result, we’re examining the ability to add it into the game in the future.

What impacts your shot?

There’s a reason players and caddies talk before their shot to best achieve success on the course so you’ll experience this in the pre-shot decisions you’ll have to make for a great shot. The challenge of your shot appears in a split between pre-shot decisions like club and shot types, with swing execution and placement based on course dynamics. This way you’ll be thinking more “golf” and less “golf swing” only.

A variety of factors like club and shot type all impact your shot but most of all, course dynamics and ball behavior like wind, altitude, terrain reactions, ball dribbling, and more will impact your shot. The full list of aspects that impact your shot are listed below

  • Slope of the terrain
  • Velocity & spin reduction from adverse terrain (like rough)
  • Golfer, club, and ball attributes
  • Power boost
  • Swing execution
  • In-flight Spin Control
  • Ball Reactions depending on terrain type and course Conditions
  • Ball dribbling

What game modes (online and offline) are available in-game?

Online game modes:

Online game modes support simultaneous play for up to 16 players and include the following game mopeds.

  • COMPETITIVE mode is ranked matchmaking to test your skills in numerous game types including 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • SOCIAL mode allows you to play against similarly skilled players online in a more relaxed  unranked environment, offering multiple ways to play such as 9 and 18 hole rounds.
  • PRIVATE MATCH mode allows you to group up with your friends and play online together with full control of gameplay and round settings allowing you to fully customize your round.

Offline game modes:

  • If you just want to dive in quickly and play a round, QUICK PLAY is exactly what you’re looking for.  Quick play can also be played as local multiplayer (couch co-op) with up to 4 golfers offering varying ways to compete such as match play, skins, alternate shot rules, and more.
  • CAREER MODE is an offline mode that will be playable at launch (but will require an online connection). You’ll hear more about that during our career mode deep dive in the coming weeks.
  • CHALLENGES provides bite-sized experiences of various lengths. Ranging anywhere from a 4 hole challenge to recreating a golfer’s hot streak from a recent PGA Tour event, to single shot challenges where you, for example, are given 5 opportunities to hit a specific shot, challenges are short yet difficult moments for you to grow your skills and earn rewards. Within Challenges mode, there’s “PGA Coach Skill Center” which is a great way to learn more about game mechanics, shot types, and the game of golf in general.
  • TOURNAMENTS provides limited-time tournaments for players to go in by themselves and submit a score to a global leaderboard that other users are also submitting to. From here, the game gives you a final rank that is paid out in rank points based on finishing position. Most of it is stroke play, where the number of holes can be variable. Ongoing seasonal events throughout the pro golf calendar can also alter the tournaments for different settings on different courses.

How can I customize gameplay to my personal preferences?

EA SPORTS PGA TOUR features a variety of gameplay styles from arcade settings that assist you with a putting grid, power boost, and spin control to simulation settings that remove all assistance for a true-to-life gameplay experience.

Is there weather available in-game?

There are a variety of factors that impact gameplay on the course including altitude and wind. Courses in traditionally cloudy areas like The Old Course at St. Andrews will appear cloudy while sunny courses like The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island will appear bright. Other weather conditions will not affect gameplay or appear in-game.

Will there be a 3-click swing option in-game?

We know that the 3-click swing is important to the community and as a result of early community feedback we are planning to include this swing in an early title update after launch.

Pure Strike incorporates the three parts of every golf shot - fluid swing mechanics that are highly accurate to a player’s backswing length and speed of follow through, innovative ball behavior allowing every bounce and roll to behave more accurately across a variety of terrain and course conditions, and lifelike course dynamics that play true to their real-life course counterparts.

In addition to being the exclusive home of all four men’s majors, EA SPORTS PGA TOUR is filled with experiences and content players have been asking for in a golf game, including:

  • World Famous Courses - The tee is yours at 30 courses, including some of the world’s most prominent venues such as Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club, Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, East Lake Golf Club, TPC Southwind, The Los Angeles Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and more. PGA TOUR 2K23

CROSSPLAY IS NOW LIVE IN PGA TOUR 2K23

Golf is fun regardless of whether you’re playing solo or with a group of friends, but it's definitely a thrill when bragging rights are on the line. PGA TOUR 2K23 offers several exhilarating multiplayer modes to choose from, with endless hours of friendly competition. Until now, multiplayer was limited to the same platform, but we’re excited to share that crossplay is now available!

Via the latest patch update, players can now tee off against one another via crossplay in Private Matches, Casual Matchmaking, and Ranked Matchmaking. Supported platforms include PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC (Steam). By default, crossplay is always on for PC, but can be disabled on Xbox by checking the system settings, and can be toggled on and off in-game on PlayStation. On PlayStation®5 and PlayStation®4 crossplay is defaulted to off, so players will need to go to Settings and then Social to toggle it on. It’s time to show your friends who has the longest drives and the best approach shots.

Proving to your friends that you’re the best golfer is one thing, but do you think you’ve got what it takes to be the best in the world? If so, head over to Ranked Matchmaking where you can join competitive rounds and climb experience tiers. Ranked play is broken down into six tiers with three divisions in five of the six tiers, with each tier having a unique icon and color to differentiate what rank you are.

Across all Ranked matches, Solo and Duo, players will compete with Pro difficulty turned on and be limited to their MyPLAYER creation. It’s worth noting that Duos are Alternate Shot, while Solo is regular match play. You can see how you measure up against other players by checking the dedicated Solo and Duo leaderboards.

Now that you know about the latest enhancements in PGA TOUR 2K23 , it’s time to hit the links. Be sure to stay tuned to pgatour.2k.com for more news and updates regarding the most authentic golf simulation available.

Is EA Sports PGA Tour crossplay? The latest golf game is finally in our hands on multiple platforms, but the big question people want to know is what cross-platform capabilities there are across the various multiplayer modes.

While questions surrounding the full EA Sports PGA Tour roster and EA Sports PGA Tour courses list may be the most important factors for players who are considering picking up the game, being able to play with pals on different platforms is a close second. So here are the details on EA Sports PGA Tour crossplay and cross-platform suitability.

EA Sports PGA Tour crossplay explained

EA Sports PGA Tour

Unfortunately, EA Sports PGA Tour will not have crossplay available at launch . This comes to not much of a surprise, seeing that this new golf game will only be on current generation platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X) and PC – sorry to anyone who was hoping for an EA Sports PGA Tour Switch version.

However, EA Sports did leave an encouraging message on their FAQ page that indicated a possible change to this current reality in the future:

“At launch, crossplay will not be a feature that appears in-game, but we are constantly evaluating the possibility of this feature appearing post-launch.”

Though it’s certainly not the answer many fans are hoping for, crossplay has been an expanding feature in more and more sports games. And with MLB The Show 23, FIFA 23, and NHL 23 all finding success with introducing crossplay over these last three years, it wouldn’t come to a surprise if EA Sports PGA Tour found the same kind of success in the future. Should anything change on the matter, be sure to stay tuned here for the latest updates.

We also have a guide on whether EA Sports PGA Tour is on Game Pass , if you fancy playing it as part of your subscription.

EA Sports makes its return with PGA Tour – Road to the Masters. The game dropped just in time for the prestigious Masters’ event and is available for purchase and download.

Here in this post, Prima Games will take you through the many game modes on offer in EA Sports PGA Tour and what you need to do as a golfer to either: build a long-lasting legacy, compete online, enter a more casual hit about, find out what tournaments are available, and more.

Let’s mull over the different game modes in EA’s latest sports title: EA Sports PGA Tour.

All Game Modes in EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Master

Prima Games has singled out all the game modes and listed what you can find in each game mode.

Quick Play Game Mode

If you’re looking to get some swings in before taking on any big events, tournaments or challenges, the quick-play game mode is an excellent way to get started or pass the time. This mode will also help you determine if more practice is required or if you are ready to become a Master.

  • Skins (2-4 Players)

EA Sports PGA Tour Career Mode

Take your created golfer to the summit in career mode. Here you’ll take your golfer, play in the major tournaments, and try to complete sponsored challenges in the game. In career mode, you must play online, requiring an online connection to progress and qualify for all the features.

You can choose different routes in career mode, choosing whether to start from the very bottom as an amateur or start walking before crawling and heading straight to the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour. The choice is yours, and if you are not ready for any, you’ll know from the first tee-off.

Inside Career Mode:

  • Amateur Championship
  • Korn Ferry Tour

Competitive Mode in Road to the Master

Want to be the best? Well, then, you have to play the best in the game. Where to do that? In competitive game mode. Here you’ll need to put on your best golf slacks and hats and make sure you come to swing your clubs hard and true.

Playing Competitive Mode in Road to the Master:

  • Augusta’s Amen Corner (1-16 Players)
  • Random, 9 Holes, Tour (1-16 Players)

When playing competitively, players can choose to play against up to 16 other players across the globe, and you can choose from a selection of the famous Augusta’s Golf Course or any 9-hole, front or back, of random course selections.

EA Sports PGA Tour | Challenges Mode

EA Sports PGA Tour – Road to the Masters’ Challenges Game Mode

If you’re not a pro at swinging, putting, or reading the game situation, challenges game mode is where you’ll spend most of your hours practicing and getting used to Road to the Masters. The challenges are one of the game’s best features and will help set you up for a great experience.

There are different challenges of various lengths and difficulties that, once completed, will gain your XP points and rewards. They consist of historical moments in the PGA and LPGA over storied courses, tournaments, and real-life moments over the weekend’s action being played in real time.

These are the challenges:

  • Challenges (120 challenges)
  • Championship Moments (582 moments on initial download)
  • Sponsors (405 challenges)
  • Spotlights (25 challenges)
  • Coaching Academy (180 challenges)
  • Vault (locked and coming soon)

What are PGA Tour playoff rules for tiebreakers?

  • Keith Jenkins

A packed leaderboard on a Sunday afternoon almost always ensures an eventful finish on the PGA Tour.

As the 18th hole approaches with scores tightly contested, a playoff to decide the winner looms. However, the PGA Tour does not have a uniform playoff format. Each event features its own playoff structure.

Here's a look at the playoff format for each major tournament on the tour.

The Masters

Any players tied atop the leaderboard at the end of 72 holes will continue play in a stroke-play, sudden-death format. The players will alternate between the 18th and 10th holes until a winner is decided.

PGA Championship

Any players tied atop the leaderboard at the end of 72 holes will compete in a three-hole (13, 17 and 18) playoff based on aggregate stroke play. If players are still tied after the three holes, they continue in a stroke-play, sudden-death format through holes 18, 13, 17 and back to 18 until a winner is decided.

Any players tied atop the leaderboard after 72 holes will compete in a two-hole (17 and 18) aggregate playoff. The player with the lowest score is then declared the winner. If there's still a tie following the playoff, the players compete in a sudden-death format, alternating between the 17th and 18th holes until a winner is decided.

The Open Championship

Any players tied atop the leaderboard after 72 holes will compete in a four-hole, stroke-play playoff. The player with the lowest aggregate score following those four holes is declared the winner. If any players remain tied after the four-hole playoff, they will continue in a hole-by-hole, sudden-death (stroke-play) format until a winner is decided.

2024 John Deere Classic predictions, expert picks, odds, field rankings, golf best bets at TPC Deere Run

Players head to the quad cities this week as the race to the fedex cup heats up.

The PGA Tour's busy summer continues this week as players make their way to the Quad Cities for the 2024 John Deere Classic. Competitors will hope to find some form at TPC Deere Run as the race to the FedEx Cup Playoffs heats up with only a handful of events remaining.

Headlining the action is the man who first broke through in Silvis, Illinois, many years ago: Jordan Spieth. The three-time major champion returns to the par-71 course for the first time since 2015 and is in need of a major push if he is to be a postseason presence through the Tour Championship.

Spieth arrives ranked No. 59 in the FedEx Cup standings, outside the top-50 cutoff which qualifies for the BMW Championship as well as the signature events in 2025. A winner at this golf course twice in his career, the Texan hopes the good vibes are enough to produce his first top-30 finish since the Texas Open in early April.

While Spieth has sputtered, someone like Sungjae Im has quietly begun to surge. Remove the major championships -- where Im has missed all three cuts -- and the South Korean has notched six straight top 12s worldwide, including a victory on the Korean Tour. Im searches for his first victory in the United States in nearly three years and enters the tournament as the favorite after Patrick Cantlay withdrew.

Defending champion Sepp Straka has his sights set on going back-to-back while Rocket Mortgage Classic contenders Aaron Rai and Davis Thompson hope to keep a good thing going. Denny McCarthy and Maverick McNealy are among those still searching for their first PGA Tour victories with young guns like Nick Dunlap, Neal Shipley and amateur Luke Clanton rounding out the field.

2024 John Deere Classic schedule

Dates:  July 4-7 Location:  TPC Deere Run — Silvis, Illinois Par:  71 |  Yardage:  7,289

2024 John Deere Classic field, odds

  • Sungjae Im (14-1): An early season neck injury has subsided and Im's form has since shot up. He's connected on four straight top-10 finishes in non-major starts including top-five efforts at the Wells Fargo Championship and, most recently, the Travelers Championship. Strides have been made with his iron play over the last couple months, and should those continue, Im will have a great chance to win
  • Sepp Straka (16-1): He's been a top-20 player on the PGA Tour this season, and a return to TPC Deere Run could result in a return to the winner's circle. Since the Masters, Straka has compiled six top-16 finishes in nine starts including a pair of top fives in signature events. The Austrian continues to pepper fairways with consistency and ranks fifth in this field in terms of strokes gained approach this season. His short game comes in waves, but he has the makeup of contending here once again.
  • Denny McCarthy (20-1)
  • Jordan Spieth (20-1): Oof. What are we going to do with Spieth? In 17 starts this season, the 30-year-old has just three top 20s with his latest coming three months ago. Sprinkle in five missed cuts, and it's no wonder he is on the outside looking in for the second playoff event. The good news for Spieth is he is putting up career numbers with the driver in hand. The bad news is he is putting up near career worst throughout the rest of his bag.
  • Aaron Rai (20-1)
  • Davis Thompson (25-1)
  • Maverick McNealy (28-1)
  • Keith Mitchell (30-1)
  • Jason Day (33-1): After a resurgent 2023, Day has experienced a stop-and-go type of 2024. There have been moments like his top-five finish at the Wells Fargo Championship, but the main issue arises with his iron play, or lack thereof. The former world No. 1 is currently amid the worst approach season of his career and has been buoyed by a massive effort with the putter. If the iron play finds some form, he has the game to win this tournament. That's a big "if," though.
  • J.T. Poston (35-1)
  • Nick Dunlap (35-1): It has taken some time for the 20-year-old to get his feet wet as a professional. Enduring some tough stretch after winning as an amateur at The American Express, Dunlap has looked the part over the last month or so. Three top 25s in his last six starts were highlighted by a top 10 last week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic where he led the field in ball striking.

There‘s 1 glorious idea the Masters should copy from Wimbledon. I lived it

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

The midnight view from the Wimbledon queue.

One year ago, two words could describe my attitude as I laid down on a patch of grass southwest of London just before midnight: jealous and annoyed . Annoyed with myself for packing so light and jealous of the woman to my left, looking all cozy zipped up in a sleeping bag, a pillow under her head and over-ear headphones helping her rest.

I had been so confident and ignorant as I’d left home that night with only the must-haves: phone, wallet, AirPods, mobile charger. No pillow, no book, no water, no blanket. I had spotted this woman — seemingly a London resident — on the train and followed closely behind her cooler and backpack from the Southfields Station as she walked toward the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon. We swam upstream against the giddy spectators, drunk on berries and cream and a straight-sets win for Novak Djokovic over Stan Wawrinka. We bobbed and weaved for 15 minutes through those lucky folks headed home to their plush mattresses before coming upon the entrance to The Queue, where we promptly received a notecard and direction to our accommodation for the night — a 10’ x 10’ plot of turf that marks our spot in the nightly lineup to buy tennis tickets.

One thousand, five hundred thirty-nine people were ahead of us, which amounted to one big snake of tents in a field. My train mate plopped down on the other side of a walkway from me and before long her eyes were closed, her hat pulled down tightly over her eyes, that bright red sleeping bag taunting me. She was a pro, and too far away from me for casual conversation. On my other side were two male friends who spoke only German between bites of the sandwiches they made at home. They, too, didn’t waste much time squeezing into their tent and zipping it shut. It was late and even darker now, with lights from the Wimbledon grounds finally clicking off over the trees in the distance.

We were removed enough from London proper that you could actually see stars in the sky, but the temperature had dipped to 65 degrees and was approaching the dew point. The nearest bathroom was 200 yards away. Nothing about my accommodation was going to be comfortable, but I had volunteered for this. I took off my belt and tucked it underneath my head for neck support. I yanked the draw string on my pullover tight as it could go, pressed play on a podcast and shoved my hands into my pant pockets to stay warm. I was jealous and annoyed. But I was excited, too. I was 10 hours away from a Wimbledon ticket.

MONDAY WAS DAY 1 OF a fancy little tennis tournament known as The Championships, Wimbledon. You know it better as, simply, Wimbledon, in the same way that a cute little golf tournament in April is known as The Masters and less The Masters Tournament.

Day 1 of Wimbledon implies a few things — namely, that the men’s and women’s singles competitions kick off. Naomi Osaka fought through a three-setter and won on a double fault. Carlos Alcaraz cruised through in three sets on Centre Court. Business as usual. The other, lesser-known implication of Day 1 at Wimbledon is that thousands of spectators arrived on Day 0, the night before, and camped out in a field with hopes of gaining access to the grounds. This year, more than 10,000 showed up overnight.

For those of us in America who get the pleasure of waking up to Coffee Tennis the next few weeks, we know the queue of fans sleeping overnight exists because, well, The Championships promotes it as a means to access one of the most sought-after tickets in sports. But also because there’s a very active Twitter/X account that comes alive every July. The handle is simple: @ViewFromTheQ .

Qupdate Day 1 well over 10000 Long wait if joining now, probably not until after 5pm and a possibility of rain this evening Day 2 small Q — The Q (@ViewFromTheQ) July 1, 2024

Every few hours, @ViewFromTheQ updates its followers on how many people are already there waiting for tomorrow’s tennis tickets. The process is simple: Show up the night prior — first come, first served — and get in line. Bring whatever you can fit in a carry-on — tent size is capped at two persons — quiet hours begin at 10 p.m., and you can leave your spot for a maximum 30 minutes to use the loo or grab some grub. Pack up your goods around 6 a.m., get your wristband at 7:30, stand in line at 9 and within the next two hours you should be holding a ticket.

If you were among the brave ones, the first 500-ish to enter the queue the night before, you’ve earned the right to buy a ticket to Centre Court for a couple hundred dollars. The next 500-600 will get tickets to Court 1 and the next 500-600 after that can gain access to Court 2. You can stay as long as you like that day, and you should take advantage. Regale yourself in the perfectly manicured grass and the energy of the assembled tennis faithful. Take a moment to drink a Pimm’s on The Hill in front of the big screen. Get comfy at your court or bop around to the others, which don’t require tickets. Watch the best players in the world practice, prep and even compete — listen to them grunt and shout and sigh! — from just a few feet away.

In other words, have the tennis experience equivalent to … Round 1 of the Masters at Augusta National .

The relationship between Augusta National Golf Club and the All England Lawn Tennis Club is not simply two sporting brands that respect each other from afar. There’s a genuine relationship between them — led in part by one man who is a member of both . But representatives from each club have traveled the 4,119 miles between Centre Court and the 1st tee at Augusta National to survey what each does to properly host its respective sporting worlds for a week or two every year. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of similarities in the product, too. Rolex is a major sponsor and IBM helps each run its digital coverage. The interview area at Wimbledon was fashioned after the one at Augusta National. The food and drink at each is iconic. The attire worn by fans — and their hushed attention to when and how to cheer — is incredibly similar. Tennis players want to win Wimbledon in the same way golfers want to win the Masters. There’s no bigger tournament. And there’s no place fans of each would rather be.

Within that pursuit there’s a shared element of the haves and the have-nots. ANGC members and their guests can hang out in the clubhouse, underneath the big oak tree, or at other exclusive spots on the property (like the little cottage in the woods behind Amen Corner ). The same applies to Wimbledon, where the lucky attendees can find tea and lunch on offer in the clubhouse, and special guests can get cozy in the Royal Box. (A number of pro golfers have done so in recent years.) But what Wimbledon does extremely well, decidedly better than Augusta National, is crack open its exclusive doors just an extra inch or two for anyone who wants it badly enough.

wimbledon queue

A year ago as a single 31-year-old man newly enamored with tennis (and passing time in London before heading up to the Open Championship), I wanted it badly enough. So I tracked @ViewFromTheQueue all day long and left my rental at 11 p.m., getting very uncomfortable for just one night, knowing the best tennis-watching on earth was in my near future. It was a mostly restless evening, for obvious reasons, but also because I was doing some dreaming about what a queue would look like on the outskirts of the Masters.

At the moment, Augusta National’s system often rewards the uber-rich or the uber-lucky. Badges to the Masters can be acquired via tour operators offering hospitality service and access to the grounds, but the price is always steep (read: thousands of dollars). Anyone passing through Augusta during tournament days will see scalpers on the side of Washington Road offering a considerable amount of cash for badges, fully aware they can sell them to someone else and take a nice cut. If you’ve got an in with an official partner — like, say, Delta Airlines — that’s another avenue inside the gates. There is, famously, the annual lottery system that ANGC hosts every summer. Later this month, golf fans will learn if their bids have been selected. Far more will end up disappointed than happy, and to ANGC that might be exactly the point. Demand is good. Predictable, reliable demand spurred on by scarcity and a little dash of hope is even better.

Wimbledon offers a similar lottery system — and perhaps with twice as many spectator days that event has a much simpler supply and demand curve. (Both clubs, it’s worth noting, are not hurting for ticket revenue.) But Wimbledon seems keenly aware that as one of the governing bodies in tennis, the sheer idea of telling people they can get affordable (if sleepless) tickets makes their tournament feel just a touch more egalitarian than the Masters does. Ticket demand for The Championships has reached unprecedented levels, chairwoman Debora Jevans said last month, but the queue offers Wimbledon another lever to pull. (Queuers can also enter a resale ticket-swap line that offers a chance to pay discounted rates later in the day when spectators on the inside have had their tennis fill.)

Ticket demand for the Masters, one would expect, will perpetually hover in the same elevated position it has for decades. But what might it do for the tournament — and the sport at large — if the club worked to satiate that demand ever so slightly? The potential is there. As Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley made clear during his press conference in April, the club is paying close attention to how it stages the Masters moving forward. This year, Ridley announced that the club would soon build accommodation for players, their families and support staff, as well as new underground parking for competitors. A year ago, Golf Digest reported club ambitions of housing media on-site, an enhanced fan village and even a Masters-specific highway off-ramp from nearby I-20.

Thanks to a seemingly bottomless operating budget, the bones are there to make it happen. Through a group of LLCs, the club has purchased property adjacent to its land for decades now. It also bought dozens and dozens of housing parcels to clear space for on-site parking at the Masters (and to help keep parking costs down for patrons) and business buildings across the street to create the new Map & Flag hospitality center so CEOs and CFOs can find some air-conditioning between their golf-viewing trips. This spring the club purchased a public park along its southeastern flank which, at the time, was one of the only parcels abutting that side of the property the club didn’t own. Its new purpose, according to the local tax commissioner, is to aid with egress and parking during Masters week. When it comes to repurposing land to better run its tournament, Augusta National is 1 of 1. An overnight queue would represent a significant change in tournament operations, but the result would be well worth it.

To make it happen, ANGC would need significantly more staffing — just as Wimbledon employs Stewards to keep watch overnight. ANGC staffs its tournament in impeccable fashion with countless volunteers, but third shift is a different animal. They’d have to work within additional city ordinances, adhering to noise control for nearby residents. They would need bathrooms — showers, perhaps? — and daily storage just like Wimbledon does. They’d come up with their own set of rules, surely. No one quite makes rules like Augusta National. Chiefly, they’d have to think about just how many extra people they would want kicking around on its hallowed grounds. The daily number of Masters attendees is believed to be around 40,000. Could they find room — and maintain the same reverence for the experience — for a couple thousand extras?

The club also would need to keep an eye out for dummies like me, showing up without a blanket or a pillow. But if we know anything about ANGC, we know they like to get creative. We know they enjoy upholding (and even importing) a standard of excellence that is unmatched — even by their friends across the pond. The sand in the bunkers — which players adore — comes from a special mine in North Carolina . One hundred-foot pines are brought in on 18-wheelers, fully grown. The chocolate chip and ice cream cookies come from Nashville. The olives served at the club are grown on a family farm in California. ( Masters champions can’t get enough of them .) The best of the best, from all over. One can only imagine how Augusta National would set up its own version of a food-truck line, rewarding its most enthusiastic patrons with a proper Southern brekky.

As for the Wimbledon Queue, my fellow spectators-in-waiting arose to an affordable black coffee for £2.55 and bacon rolls for £7.50 apiece. Sports fans on the precipice of a dream coming true don’t need much, it turns out. They just want a way in.

Neal Shipley finishes productive weekend; ties for 20th in PGA Tour event

By: Paul Schofield Sunday, June 30, 2024 | 9:33 PM

Mt. Lebanon native Neal Shipley finished 20th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his first PGA Tour event as a professional.

Neal Shipley’s first taste of the PGA Tour turned out to be tasteful.

The Mt. Lebanon native and 2019 Central Catholic grad, received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit, and he made it pay off.

Shipley shot an even-par 72 during the final round and ended tied for 20th at 11-under-par 277. He left with a paycheck of $113,068. He had three birdies and three bogeys during his round.

He finished with 17 birdies, two eagles and 10 bogeys. In the first three rounds, he shot 67, 68 and 71.

Shipley was a 2-under through 13 holes Sunday at the Detroit Golf Club. He birdied Nos. 4, 5 and 13.

This was his first PGA Tour event and his second pro event since finishing as low amateur at the U.S. Open. He also was low amateur at the Masters.

He tied for ninth in his first pro event, the PGA Tour Americas Victoria Open in Victoria, British Columbia. Shipley earned a spot in the tour before the Masters.

Shipley will compete in the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., on another sponsor’s exemption.

This past week, Shipley threw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game on Monday and had a sandwich at Primanti’s named in his honor called the “Sand-Wedge.”

Cam Davis won the Rocket Mortgage Classic for the second time, closing with a 2-under 70 that gave him a one-shot victory when Akshay Bhatia three-putted from 32 feet on the final hole.

Jordan Spieth is now an expert on what a 59 looks like in golf. He’s watched it happen twice

When Cameron Young made a 10-foot par putt for 59 in the third round of the Travelers Championship, Jordan Spieth became a footnote in history as the only player to twice be in the same group as someone who broke 60.

Spieth also played alongside Justin Thomas in the 2017 Sony Open when he made a 15-foot eagle putt on his final hole for 59 in the opening round.

So which was the best round he personally witnessed?

He leaned toward a 60.

Remember, Spieth also was playing with Bryson DeChambeau in the second round of the 2021 BMW Championship at Caves Valley. DeChambeau hit 8-iron to 2 feet for eagle on the par-5 16th hole and needed only to birdie one of the last two holes.

He missed from 15 feet on No. 17 and from 6 feet on No. 18 and shot 60 .

“I would say Bryson that day because it was a par 72,” Spieth said. “That might be the answer on those three rounds.”

He had deep appreciation for all three.

Young got off to a flier — two birdies, holing out for eagle from 142 yards, another birdie to reach 5 under through four holes on the par-70 TPC River Highlands. Key was a 30-foot putt on No. 9 and a 3-iron to 4 feet for eagle on the reachable par-4 15th. Conditions allowed for players to lift, clean and place, though Young hit only six fairways.

“I remember thinking both Cam and Justin were right in it at the beginning,” Spieth said.

Paris Olympics

  • The Olympics are more than fun and games . They’re a billion-dollar business with political overtones.
  • Breakdance will make it’s debut as an Olympic sport in Paris.. Here’s what else will be different at this year’s games.
  • Follow all of AP’s coverage of the Summer Games .

Thomas holed out from eagle on the short par-4 10th at Waialae to start his round. He actually bogeyed the next hole but then had a 10-hole stretch of eight birdies, including five in a row around the turn.

What Spieth doesn’t recall is that he hit the ball better than Thomas that day — Spieth’s average proximity to the hole was 18 feet, compared with 25 feet for Thomas.

“There’s definitely an argument to be for JT because he knew he needed eagle (on the final hole) and made a 15-foot slider,” Spieth said. “That’s a little bit different. That was the most clutch of the three.”

DeChambeau wasn’t clutch. He hit pitching wedge to 6 feet below the cup for 59 and missed. But so thorough was his performance that day that he never had more than two birdies in a row.

He was 9.913 shots better than the field average at Caves Valley, while Thomas was 9.249 better than the field at Waialae. Young was 7.845 shots better at TPC River Highlands.

Olympics won’t include Ewing

Ally Ewing loves nothing more than to represent her country. Her only chance this year will be the Solheim Cup.

Ewing made bogey on the 16th hole and that wound up being a key moment that narrowly kept her out of the Olympics. Countries can have a maximum of four players provided they are among the top 15 in the women’s world ranking.

Ewing by one shot missed out on a tie for second in the KPMG Women’s PGA. She finished in a two-way tie for fifth and moved up to No. 16 in the world. A four-way tie for second would have meant moving to No. 14.

The Americans will have three players at the Paris Games with Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang.

Ewing, meanwhile, moved to No. 3 in the Solheim Cup standings for this year’s matches.

Amy Yang won her first major on Sunday at Sahalee and moved to a career-high No. 5. That also gave South Korea three players in the Olympics, with Yang joining Jin Young Ko and Hyo Joo Kim. South Korea had four players the past two Olympics.

No country has four women for the first time since golf returned to the Olympic program in 2016.

Lydia Ko, Brooke Henderson and Leona Maguire are among 13 players who will be competing for the third straight time. Ko has won the silver medal (2016) and bronze (2020).

Senior Open to be more open

The U.S. Senior Open is making changes to become more open.

The USGA says next year’s championship at The Broadmoor in Colorado will have similar qualifying to the U.S. Open. Instead of one stage of qualifying over 33 sites, there will be 32 local qualifiers and 12 final qualifiers.

It also will reduce the number of full exemptions. Among the changes are PGA Tour Champions winners getting a one-year exemption instead of two- or three-year exemptions. The other three American senior majors will get five-year exemptions to the U.S. Senior Open.

Olympics or PGA Tour?

Mito Pereira of LIV Golf is going back to the Olympics because Cristobal del Solar of Chile wants to give himself his best chance at getting a PGA Tour card.

The International Golf Federation still has del Solar listed as part of the 60-man field for the Paris Olympics. It will not be finalized until July 9. However, Pereira told LIV Golf’s website that del Solar has decided to skip the Olympics to try to move up the Korn Ferry Tour points list.

“He wanted to get to a certain number of points because obviously he’s fighting for his PGA Tour card,” Pereira said last week at LIV Golf Nashville. ”It’s not that one is more important than the other. Obviously trying to get to the PGA Tour is his main goal. He made that decision and I think it’s very smart to do it.”

Del Solar, who shot 57 in a Korn Ferry Tour event in Colombia earlier this year , is No. 16 on the points list with 11 tournaments remaining. The top 30 earn PGA Tour status for next year.

Del Solar was No. 195 in the world when Olympic qualifying ended. Pereira was No. 272, but he easily got Chile’s second spot in the Olympics because he was more than 100 spots ahead of the player from the next available country.

Joaquin Niemann, also with LIV Golf, has the other spot for Chile.

Pereira, best known for losing a one-shot lead with a double bogey on the final hole of the 2022 PGA Championship, was part of a seven-man playoff for the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics. Niemann finished one shot out of the playoff, which was won by C.T. Pan of Taiwan.

“Three years waiting for that again,” Pereira said. “I’m really focused on playing my best to get the medal.”

Money matters

Scottie Scheffler has won or finished second in eight of his 15 starts on the PGA Tour this year. He is really cashing in at the $20 million signature events.

Scheffler played seven of the eight signature events, won four of them and earned $16.98 million. His season total, including wins at the Masters and The Players Championship, put him at $27,696,858 for the year.

Still to come is the British Open and two FedEx Cup playoff events. Meanwhile, his victory in the Travelers Championship made him the seventh player to cross $70 million in career earnings. Scheffler is in his fifth full season on the PGA Tour.

Front Office Sports reports that TMRW Sports, the company backed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy that runs the TGL league, is valued at nearly $500 million in a Series A funding round announced Monday. The indoor, tech-drive TGL with six four-man teams doesn’t start until January. ... Harry Higgs has earned enough points on the Korn Ferry Tour to assure he will have a full PGA Tour card again next year. ... Florida State alumni had a big Sunday in PGA Tour-sanctioned events. John Pak won his first Korn Ferry Tour event, while recent graduate Frederik Kjettrup won in Canada on the PGA Tour Americas. The most famous former Seminole, five-time major champion Brooks Koepka, tied for 42nd against the 54-man field at LIV Golf.

Stat of the week

Scottie Scheffler has been bogey-free in the final round in three of his six victories this year.

“We do the best we can. Some days, golf feels so easy and feels so fun. Other days, it feels like I want to retire very soon.” — Amy Yang after winning her first major at age 34.

Richard Bland wins US Senior Open in dramatic finish at Newport Country Club

pga tour masters cross play

NEWPORT — It was as much a statement as it was the bunker shot that helped him win the U.S. Senior Open.

Richard Bland wanted it to be known he was making par. Hiroyuki Fujita would have to match him to continue their playoff at Newport Country Club.

The fourth extra hole was where the drama ended on a splendid Monday morning, an epic two-day fourth round that was interrupted by thunderstorms the previous afternoon. Bland tapped in from inches away and Fujita couldn’t coax home a sliding 20-footer, the slim difference at one of American golf’s founding venues.

It was Bland who donned the winner’s gold medal and lifted the trophy after matching Fujita through regulation at 13-under par. Two pars and a bogey from each man preceded the last playing of the 18th hole this week, and Fujita’s bogey ultimately cost him a title he seemed destined to win entering the previous day.

“The trap shot, if you’re playing it normal with your mates, you’d have an up and down a 100 times out of 100,” Bland said. “It wasn’t that tough a shot.

“He had 20 feet across the slope — he's got to know I’m making four. That was my objective there.”

More: Hiroyuki Fujita remains in control and continues to lead at the U.S. Senior Open

Bland closed out a 66 playing in the penultimate group and survived a bogey on his final hole in regulation to post the leading score. Fujita slipped to a 71 thanks to three bogeys in four holes after play resumed but made a terrific par at the last to secure his place in the first playoff at this event since 2014 and seventh overall. Both men navigated the par-4 10th and par-4 18th without a mistake in the two-hole aggregate portion, and the format switched to sudden death while repeating the 18th.

Bland wiped his 3-wood approach right of the green playing the 18th for the second time and was fortunate Fujita couldn’t get up and down from the front of the left greenside bunker. He cleared the fairway cross bunker with his next drive and had less club in hand — a 7-wood up the hill into a stiff breeze allowed him to be more aggressive and find that same left bunker hole high. Bland was blasting out uphill this time and hit one of the shots of the tournament, a pitch that hopped once and hit the flagstick before settling immediately.

“I just wanted to be fully committed to it,” Bland said. “I didn’t want to just hit the duff and run shot. I could be aggressive with it.”

Fujita was short of the green in two and clipped his pitch too sharply, spinning it onto the front of the green and leaving a lengthy putt. He started it well outside the hole’s right edge and watched it curl just above the cup, a bid that came up inches away from forcing a fifth extra hole. It was the fifth bogey in 12 holes for Fujita after making just two in the week’s first 64.

“He hit an unbelievable putt,” Bland said. “Four feet out I’m thinking we’re going back to the 18th tee. It couldn’t miss. Fortunately enough for me it stayed on the top side.”

Bland entered Sunday at 9-under and was five shots behind Fujita. He built immediate momentum with birdies at his first three holes and another at the par-4 seventh. Bland resumed his round with bogey at the par-4 13th along Ocean Drive but followed with two straight birdies that put him in the lead for the first time.

“I’m a leaderboard watcher,” Bland said. “I want to know what’s going on. You’ve got to know whether you need to keep pushing or if you can be a little bit more conservative.”

Fujita was masterful through the first four days but finally showed a crack or two on the fifth. His save out of the right bunker at the 13th was the only thing that prevented him from carding four straight bogeys to begin the day. Fujita wound up needing four consecutive pars in regulation to join Bland three shots ahead of Richard Green and four in front of Steve Stricker.

“I was frustrated on Saturday, but sometimes that’s just golf,” Bland said. “You’re not going to have it all your way for 72 holes.”

Bland played in just three professional majors from 1998 to 2020 before finding something of a late-career prime. He won the British Masters in 2021 and shared the 36-hole lead at the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines later that summer. Bland joins Arnold Palmer and Alex Cejka in winning his first two PGA Tour Champions majors, adding this title to his Senior PGA Championship in May.

“I was just hoping going into the PGA that I was good enough to contend,” Bland said. “I hadn’t played against these guys. I knew if I played the way I know I can play it should be good enough to compete.

“To be stood here with two majors, yes — I'm at a loss for words.”
