The Africa we want to show you
When I first came in Africa, I had to let go of whatever preconceived biases I could have had. The vast expanse of vegetation in front of me was serene, vivid, almost unreal, and dreamlike. It simply is beautiful. It’s amazing how for a moment I thought I was on a different planet from the earth and that a miracle was happening all around me. The earth’s aroma, brightness, sights, and sounds, which I could perceive with all my senses, greatly touched my heart. All I need now is more, more of Africa.

One&Only is one of the most expensive hotel brands in the entire world. Its exotic locations are focused on offering an off-the-beaten-path retreat in pure luxury at some of the world’s most mystical locations. So if you’re looking for the best of the best, look no further than One&Only.
Its portfolio consists of 12 properties in 10 countries. Both Dubai and Rwanda each have the privilege of hosting 2 One&Only properties.
In this complete article, we’ll walk you through our favorite One&Only hotels and resorts in the entire world.
One&Only is a collection of hand-picked hotels and resorts that promise to “take you where few will ever go.” Its goals are to immerse you into each unique environment, offer authentic cuisine, tailor unique excursions, and offer spectacular spaces to simply “be.”
Sol Kerzner, a South African businessman, started One&Only in 2002 to deliver unforgettable experiences to the ultra-wealthy. In fact, there’s such as an aura to this brand that most don’t realize its relatively small footprint — that’s because its global reputation exceeds its reach.
In this guide, we’ll show you how One&Only delivers wherever you are in the world, whether you’re in an urban escape, eco-sensitive resort, or a private island oasis.
But first, let’s talk about credit cards and how to get the most from your booking.
One of the key mantras at Upgraded Points is that we strive to help you get the most from your credit cards, points, and travel.
Whether you’re enjoying discounts on paid stays, using points for free award stays, or just getting more perks and benefits, there’s tons of value in using the right websites and credit cards to book your stays .
Considering One&Only doesn’t have a dedicated loyalty program and these properties are often extremely expensive, you’ll want to pay attention closely to this section.
How To Use Points for One&Only Stays
Redeeming chase ultimate rewards points.
If you have one of the best Chase credit cards , you will earn Ultimate Rewards points on all your purchases. Additionally, when it comes time to use your points, you can book One&Only stays through the Chase travel portal .
Depending on which credit card you have, you can get up to 1.5 cents per point of redemption value. To get 1.5 cents per point in value, you need to have the exclusive Chase Sapphire Reserve ® . More achievable, though, is the 1.25 cents per point in value you can get from both the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card and the Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card . Lastly, if you have the Chase Freedom Flex℠ , Chase Freedom Unlimited ® , Ink Business Cash ® Credit Card , or Ink Business Unlimited ® Credit Card , you will get 1 cent per point of redemption value.
So if you redeem 100,000 points from your Chase Sapphire Preferred card, expect to get about $1,250 off of your One&Only stay.
Redeeming Amex Membership Rewards Points
Amex Membership Rewards is American Express’s flagship rewards program.
When you book a One&Only hotel stay using points via AmexTravel.com , your bookings may qualify as an Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts booking , getting you a redemption value of 1 cent per point . This is in contrast to its normal value of 0.7 cents per point.
You’ll also enjoy luxury Fine Hotels & Resorts benefits, which we’ll talk about shortly.
Redeeming Citi ThankYou Points
You can also redeem Citi ThankYou Rewards Points through the Citi Travel Center for flights, hotels, cruises, car rentals, and more.
When you do so, you’ll get a flat redemption value of 1 cent per point .
Redeeming Capital One Miles
Capital One miles are earned through a few Venture and Spark credit cards .
Redeeming Capital One Miles is similarly easy — by going through the Capital One Travel portal , you can book One&Only stays using your hard-earned points.
You’ll get a redemption value of 1 cent per point here.
Book via Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts
If you book a stay at specific properties through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts , you’ll enjoy the following perks:
- Daily breakfast for 2
- A space-available room upgrade upon arrival
- Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
- Noon early check-in, subject to availability
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
- A property amenity valued at a minimum of $100, such as a food and beverage credit or a spa credit
Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts is a collection of the best luxury properties that allow Amex cardholders who have an eligible Platinum or Centurion card to enjoy additional benefits. If you have The Platinum Card ® from American Express , The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express , or the Centurion ® Card from American Express , you can make a Fine Hotels & Resorts booking at any of the following One&Only properties to enjoy the extra benefits listed above:
- Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley
- One&Only Cape Town
- One&Only Gorilla’s Nest
- One&Only Mandarina
- One&Only Nyungwe House
- One&Only The Palm
- One&Only Palmilla
- One&Only Reethi Rah North Malé Atoll, Maldives
Hot Tip: Cardholders of the Amex Platinum card can also get up to $200 in statement credits every year on prepaid hotel stays at Fine Hotels & Resorts properties booked via AmexTravel.com!
Book via Virtuoso
Don’t have an Amex Platinum card or Centurion card? Not to worry — bookings made through Virtuoso do not require any special credit cards.
You’ll get a similar suite of benefits, including:
- Late checkout (subject to availability)
- Early check-in (subject to availability)
- A Virtuoso amenity, such as a $100 food and beverage credit or a $100 property credit
Virtuoso is usually slightly less attractive than Fine Hotels & Resorts in terms of perks — for example, the late checkout is subject to availability with Virtuoso, while it’s guaranteed for 4 p.m. with Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts.
That said, you might often find Virtuoso rates to be slightly lower than Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts rates.
All One&Only properties participate in Virtuoso.
Using the Citi Prestige ® Card Fourth-Night Free Benefit
Citi’s ultra-premium credit card, the Citi Prestige card , affords a unique and interesting benefit for hotel stays, known as the fourth-night free benefit. Although this card is not open for new applicants, existing cardholders have access to this perk.
On bookings of 4 consecutive nights or more, you’ll receive your fourth night free when booking through the ThankYou Rewards website or via phone at 800-THANK-YOU.
You can use this benefit up to twice per calendar year as a way to save up to 25% off of your booking!
And with how pricey One&Only hotels are, this 1 benefit could easily save you thousands of dollars.
Book Directly for Exclusive Offers and Packages
One&Only has a landing page for exclusive offers that can get you extra benefits during your stay, provide discounted room rates, or group activities and amenities into packages for convenience.
Some examples of offers include nightly resort credits, complimentary boat transfers, resort credits when booking villas, photography workshops, and extended stay discounts.
We’ve just outlined all of the major ways you can get discounts or added benefits for your One&Only stay.
Regardless of which avenue you go through, you’ll still want some inspiration as to which One&Only property you should visit.
Remember, One&Only’s footprint is just 12 properties large, so choosing wisely shouldn’t be that difficult.
In this next section, we’ll show you the best One&Only properties in the world. Are you as excited as we are?!

Published Jun 6 2021, 6:43 AM, Updated May 22 2024, 3:12 PM One&Only Resorts and hotels offer the best in luxury with amazing facilities and superb service at the choicest locales in the world. One&Only operates ultra-luxury hotels and resorts around the world with hotels across North America, South America, the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, and more recently, they have just opened the first One&Only hotel in Europe. Below, we review the best One&Only hotels in the world.
Of course, selecting the best One&Only hotel is impossible. They are all great, and preferences depend on personal experiences. We have picked some of our favorites with our reasoning.
One&Only’s first European resort, Portonovi, offers a glamorous nautical lifestyle. Explore rugged coastlines lapped by sparkling seas and decorated with charming historic palaces, relax on sun-soaked hidden bays, visit cobbled old town streets, and hike UNESCO national parks. We selected this resort at the very top because Luxury Travel Diary is based just south of London, England, so the launch of this resort offers an extraordinary opportunity for us Europeans to enjoy the One&Only experience with just a short flight.
Resplendent at the entrance of Boka Bay, a fjord-like idyll on Montenegro’s Adriatic Sea, One&Only Portonovi is the ultra-luxury brand’s first outpost in Europe. With its moated walled towns, the backdrop of unspoiled coastal mountains, and perched amongst one of the sunniest year-round spots on the Adriatic, the resort is a perfectly placed sanctuary from which to explore the coastline and charms of Montenegro.
Presenting guests with private sandy beaches, a revolutionary wellness experience with Chenot Espace, world-class dining by Michelin-starred chef Giorgio Locatelli, and the intuitive service for which the brand is renowned, eagerly anticipated One&Only Portonovi is a definite “must stay” for your bucket list.
The prize for the most popular One&Only resort booked by clients of our luxury travel concierge is One&Only Palmilla in the Los Cabos area of Mexico and we think it is one of the best luxury hotels in Los Cabos .
Probably the biggest advantage of One&Only Palmilla over other resorts in the area is its beach, which is generally swimmable. One of the beaches here is safely swimmable year-round, even when the waves here are both spectacular and rough. If you prefer to stay poolside, the infinity pools elevate you so that you can enjoy views of the Pacific, even when the waves crash against this rocky peninsula.
That said, if it is good beaches you’re looking for, it’s also worth considering Four Seasons Los Cabos and Amanvari also have similarly good beaches, although these are found on the other, calmer side of the Cape.
One&Only Palmilla attracts celebrities and Hollywood A-listers. It ticks all the boxes with impressive fine dining, an excellent spa, and at certain times of the year, you can watch distant humpback whales navigating the Pacific.
The feel of this resort is Spanish colonial with white-washed walls. The resort has a true Mexican vibe, a stunning spa, a beautiful church, and very nice landscaping, pools, and beach. The service is outstanding. The bars and restaurants here ooze sophistication with colorful furnishings. The open-air terrace named Breeze overlooks the pools and is a good place to have breakfast or lunch. Expect your breakfast to have a touch of Mexican mixed in with the usual. For example, how do scrambled eggs, guacamole, and Pico de Gallo sound?
Suviche offers sushi and a bar in the evening, or try one of two beachside grills. For something special, head to the most high-end restaurant in the resort, ‘Seared’ by Michelin-starred Jean-Georges Vongerichten, which serves a delicious gourmet menu with a hint of Mexican.
The One&Only Spa has its own yoga garden and treatment cabanas situated in landscaped courtyards. There’s an excellent children’s and teens’ club and a private surf school making this a great choice for families with children. There’s also a Jack Nicklaus 27-hole golf course exclusive to the resort, along with paddle-boarding and tennis.
Standard ‘Ocean Front’ rooms are large, but ‘Pool Casita Suites’ are perfect for a special occasion or a honeymoon and have a private plunge pool and incredible ocean views and are the ones to pick if your budget stretches that far.
One&Only Reethi Rah is the One&Only in the Maldives and sits on its own private island. It’s the kind of place that offers endless beaches and is so relaxing that the only decision you’ll have to make is whether your toes prefer to dip in warm sands or the refreshing Indian Ocean. Explore private beaches, open waters, and an array of glamorous dining options during your stay.
You can choose to spend your days on any of the 12 beaches; you can exercise at two championship-grade tennis courts, relax in the spa, or go underwater at the Maldives’ only PADI National Geographic dive center.
Secluded villas have their own private verandas, the beachside restaurants are idyllic, and the infinity pool is outstanding. Just remember not to pack too many heels. They simply don’t work in the sand (you sink!).
One&Only Mandarina is a hidden retreat in Riviera Nayarit, with palm-fringed sands, swimmable shores, and an energetic environment. Situated in Mexico’s coastal rainforest and offering emerald cliffs, dropping down to soft white sands and a warm, life-filled ocean, One&Only Mandarina offers a glamorous paradise.
Step out from your private cliff-top villa or treehouse and head down to the picture-perfect Pacific to surf the waves or zipline through the rainforest canopy to start your day. The cuisine here is crafted by celebrity chef Enrique Olvera, with an ethos of drawing you closer to the natural world, where fresh and inspiring ingredients, bold vistas, and a unique microclimate awaken and overwhelm your senses.
For the ultimate thrill, fulfill childhood dreams with a stunning one-bedroom treehouse floating 12 meters above ground level.
If you are heading to Dubai, there are two One&Only resorts. The Palm and the Royal Mirage. The Palm offers a world of cosmopolitan beachside living with refreshing pools surrounded by elegant loungers, outstanding cuisine, and wonderful grounds.
One&Only The Palm is located on the tree-shaped Palm Island archipelago. The food is a major highlight here, with three wonderful restaurants overseen by acclaimed French chef Yannick Alléno. 101 Dining Lounge & bar is hip, with a DJ on most evenings, and offers Mediterranean dishes next to the resort’s private marina. Stay by Yannick Alléno offers French cuisine, and Zest restaurant is a relaxed outdoor affair.
Perhaps most noteworthy for Dubai is that this hotel is boutique-sized, with only 90 rooms.
Considered Dubai’s most stylish beach resort, One&Only Royal Mirage offers three distinct environments: The Palace, Arabian Court, and Residence & Spa. Larger than its sister hotel, One&Only Royal Mirage offers luxurious rooms and suites, nine inspiring restaurants, and dramatic, Arabesque architecture.
With more than 65 acres of immaculate gardens, soothing fountains, arches, and so forth, you can get lost and find your own space to merge with the glorious foliage. Meandering pathways lead down to the one-kilometer sweep of Jumeirah Beach.
One&Only Royal Mirage’s wonderfully unique rooms and suites vary across the three stunning hotel areas – The Palace, Arabian Court, and the Residence & Spa – so you can choose from numerous room types, each with their own individual style.
One&Only Le Saint Géran is a tropical island escape where you can spend lazy days on your private terrace or experience one-of-a-kind Indian Ocean adventures. Wake up to endless ocean views on this secluded island paradise, where ancient rainforests and volcanoes meet the azure blue of the Indian Ocean.
Situated between a sheltered lagoon and the Indian Ocean, One&Only Le Saint Géran, Mauritius, offers accommodation on a private peninsula with ocean, beach, or lagoon views.
Surrounded by coral reefs and clear waters, framed by a crescent-shaped stretch of white sand beach, this really is an extraordinary resort.
One&Only Cape Town offers a bustling waterfront retreat where artistic charm meets traditional splendor framed by the dramatic mountain peaks of Table Mountain.
Nestled between the dramatic peaks of Table Mountain and the roaring Atlantic Ocean, you’ll spend warm, leisurely days by glistening pools or bask in relaxation at the spa and balmy evenings sampling local flavors at the exquisite restaurants Nobu, Vista Bar & Lounge, and Isola.
One&Only Nyungwe House, Rwanda, is a rainforest-inspired eco-retreat immersed in greenery with the authentic beauty of Rwanda.
Journey to Rwanda, where the unforgettable scents of the rainforest and verdant jungle terrain are endless, and wildlife roams free. Captivating wildlife, dramatic mountain landscapes blanketed with greenery, and their own working tea plantation; see natural wonders flourish at One&Only Nyungwe House.
One&Only Kéa Island, Greece, has not yet even launched but will be a wonderful European One&Only hotel. A haven in the azure Aegean Sea, Kéa is an island of stories, myths, and marvels. In a secluded bay laced with pristine golden sands, One&Only Kéa Island will also offer an enviable collection of private villas. I can’t think of a nicer place to call home!

Six reasons why you should visit One&Only's resorts
There's never been a better time to book a stay at a One&Only resort , with a trio of new properties set to welcome guests in 2023. One&Only Kéa Island, an undercover island just off the coast of Athens, and One&Only Aesthesis in the city itself, plus One&Only One Za’abeel in Dubai promise exceptional stays in the most spectacular destinations in the world. Here's why this really is the one and only way to travel.
Pioneers of ultra-luxury travel
One&Only Reethi Rah, Maldives
Since Sol Kerzner founded the company in 2002, One&Only has set the standard for what a resort should be. A stay promises richly animated experiences and superb entertainment, spoiling spas, dynamic cuisine and a complete cultural immersion in each destination. With 12 exceptional resorts and six of those destinations also offering private homes to buy, One&Only opens the door to the most incredible locations on the planet, from the rainforests of Rwanda, to the shores of the Maldives and Mauritius to Montenegro on the shining Adriatic. In just two decades, One&Only has redefined the definition of ultra-luxury travel.
Location, location, location
One&Only Mandarina, Mexico
One&Only doesn't just scout out the best destinations – it acquires the very best address in each locale. Take, for instance, its two Rwandan resorts, One&Only Gorilla's Nest and One&Only Nyungwe House : both whisk guests into the heart of the country's legendary rainforest, to be surrounded by wildlife you might have previously only seen on television. Other examples are Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley , a serenely isolated spot in the breathtaking wilderness of Australia's Greater Blue Mountains and One&Only Reethi Rah , one of the first ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives, which transformed it from a scuba-diving spot to a destination on everyone’s bucket list. Yet another is One&Only Kéa Island , a cliff-side Cycladic gem that the company is soon to reveal to the ultra-luxury travel scene. Here you’ll happily lose track of time as you sunbathe between cooling dips in the sparkling waters of the Aegean. Similarly, One&Only Aesthesis will invoke the mid-century glamour of the Athenian Riviera and the mystique of ancient Greece with its coastal location, surrounded by fragrant lavender fields, lush forests and willowy oleander.
The most swoon-worthy resort you'll ever visit
Of course, the destination is only part of what makes a One&Only holiday so special. With stunning design, unbelievable service and flawless facilities, the resorts alone are reason to make the journey, wherever they are in the world. No two villas or suites are quite alike, but every one is spacious and elegantly decorated, with spectacular views as standard. At several resorts, a dedicated host will be on hand to attend to your every whim. Restaurants all nurture a deep understanding of local cuisine: at the two Grecian resorts, seasonal and sustainable ingredients will elevate traditional favourites into fine art. Resorts also partner with world-class chefs such as Nobu Matsuhisa at One&Only Cape Town , Andrew Walsh at One&Only Desaru Coast and Anne-Sophie Pic at One&Only Le Saint Géran to create the most memorable dining experiences.. Wellbeing, too, is a priority – every spa uses traditional healing rituals local to the resort, as well as state-of-the-art treatments. Rebalance at the holistic spa at One&Only Kéa Island , be recharged with hot stone therapy at the Oriental Hammam at One&Only Royal Mirage , or retreat into a world of wellbeing founded on ancient indigenous know-how in the lush forests of One&Only Mandarina .
An immersive cultural stay
In other resorts, it can be easy to feel detached from the local culture. But at One&Only, bringing locations to life for guests is a priority. Every one is entirely unique, with its own distinct character that marries contemporary elegance with authentic culture – think spectacular treehouse suites at One&Only Gorilla's Nest and One&Only Mandarina , Arabian-inspired design at One&Only Royal Mirage , or tropical Maldivian glamour at One&Only Reethi Rah . The brand also curates a personal itinerary of exceptional experiences to help you get the most from your holiday. Enjoy a schedule of whale-watching, snorkelling and vibrant Mexican cookery classes at One&Only Palmilla ; embark on guided hikes up Table Mountain and wine-tasting sessions at One&Only Cape Town ; or embark on a Warrior's Journey into the ancient Malaysian martial art of Silat Melayu at One&Only Desaru Coast . Meanwhile, guests at One&Only Aesthesis will soon be hiking through protected forest trails, and those who have reserved their spot at One&Only Kéa Island will find a seemingly endless underwater playground of sea life and shipwrecks to explore. Whatever your dream holiday might include, One&Only makes it a reality.
Exciting new openings
One&Only Aesthesis, Greece
The three new openings planned for summer 2023 prove the brand is never content to rest on its laurels. Those who covet the laid-back, sunsoaked Mediterranean lifestyle should be quick to book at the first of its two new Grecian retreats, One&Only Kéa Island . Well off the beaten track, this tiny little spot in the Cyclades retains its original character and charm, making it the ideal place to get away from it all. Days are spent lazing on the idyllic sands, or diving to marvel at the spectacular sea life; artisanal dishes are served at sunset in the beach club, where a lively, spirited vibe takes over as night falls. With all the privacy and peace you could wish for, it's the perfect hideaway for that dream romantic break. One&Only Aesthesis is similarly serene. It's just a short drive from the city, but feels like another world entirely: surrounded by 21 hectares of protected forest reserve, it's unspoilt coastal wilderness at its best. The design draws heavily from the natural landscape, all smooth stone and seamless transitions between indoors and out, while the atmosphere is one of nostalgic glamour and allure. Spend the day exploring galleries and museums in the city, and return to your beachfront villa in time to change for supper: grilled seafood caught that afternoon and delicious local wines are calling you. The third opening planned for 2023 is One&Only One Za’abeel in Dubai, a glittering skyscraper in the city's most coveted neighbourhood. A particular highlight will be the Link, a concourse connecting the retreat's two towers set to transform into a dining destination with world-class restaurants.
A stay that can last forever
A stay in any of these spectacular properties will have you planning a return visit long before you leave – but there's also a more permanent way to make One&Only your happy place. One&Only Private Homes give you the chance to own a little slice of paradise at one of six properties: One&Only Mandarina in Mexico, One&Only Le Saint Géran in Mauritius, One&Only Kéa Island in Greece, One&Only Portonovi in Montenegro, One&Only Moonlight Basin in Montana and One&Only One Za’abeel in Dubai. Becoming a homeowner gives you access to a new world of privilege: not only will you have all the comforts and convenience you've come to expect from a One&Only resort, combined with the exquisite seclusion of a private address, but you'll also enjoy the personal attention of a One Contact concierge who'll anticipate your desires, arrange exceptional adventures and ensure very visit is as magical as the last. Family holidays, grand reunions and celebrations with friends – every occasion is made all the more special with a One&Only Private Home .

One&Only Le Saint Géran, the legendary beach resort on the north-eastern coast of Mauritius, reopened in 2018 following a complete transformation and has risen again as the greatest celebration of its unrivaled Mauritian setting. The property’s private peninsula offers two stunning coastlines: on the east, the Indian Ocean, fringed by swaying palms; on the west, sugarcane-covered mountain views and a tranquil lagoon. Guests enjoy opportunities to connect with family while experiencing idyllic beaches, two sparkling pools, the blissful One&Only Spa, and Club One – a new hub for all things active. The resort’s collection of renovated and brand-new restaurants features Michelin-starred gastronomic displays and theater-style cooking.
One&Only Le Saint Géran features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury resorts in Mauritius and the best honeymoon hotels in the world .

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
- Boasting a dreamy location on the north-eastern coast of the island of Mauritius, One&Only Le Saint Géran set new standards of ultra-luxury in the Indian Ocean and beyond when it opened in 1975. At that time, tourism in Mauritius was in its infancy and the resort’s developers had the whole island to choose from, so they settled for the very best spot: a secluded and sheltered peninsula with 2 miles (1.2 km) of white-sand beaches surrounding a lush and natural coconut grove. One side of the peninsula is lapped by the calm waters of a lagoon while the other side overlooks the crystalline and coral reef-sheltered waters of the sparkling Indian Ocean. While it’s about an hour-long car ride winding past sugar cane fields to reach the resort from the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, a 20-minute helicopter transfer is certainly the more scenic route, offering jaw-dropping bird’s-eye views of Mauritiu’s rugged mountains, spectacular lagoon and glistening beaches.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius reopened in 2018 following a nine-month renovation and multi-million-dollar investment which has transformed the iconic property once again into one of the best beach resorts in the world. Nestled within lush tropical gardens, the much-loved colonial-style architecture has been preserved, while a comprehensive redesign process has introduced a cool, contemporary beach-inspired aesthetic, celebrating Mauritian lifestyle and culture. As guests arrive at the resort, soaring wooden doors open to reveal a majestic lobby , whose high-ceilinged stone and wood breezeway is interspersed with vast dome-shaped open windows. Floors of soft silver travertine and white washed walls echo the ripples of the seashore, reflecting light all around to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere. The lobby opens to the resort’s shoreline where a unique stainless-steel spherical structure is the eye catcher. Designed by Dong Sculpture in the form of a palm frond blowing in the wind, the sculpture symbolizes the strength of the Mauritian people to adapt to their changing environment.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius features 142 redesigned guest rooms and suites , which are located in white-washed, low-lying pavilions whose architecture was inspired by old sugar cane factories and plantation houses. All of the resort’s 142 rooms and villas face the lagoon or the ocean, which means there’s absolutely no reason to be picky. During my holiday, I was upgraded to a magnificent ocean suite, which came with a separate living room (with sitting & dining area as well as a guest washroom), a spacious master bedroom with kingsize bed, and ensuite bathroom equipped with double vanity, cascading shower, freestanding tub and dressing area. Both the bedroom and living room opened to a gorgeous outdoor, shaded terrace which offered direct access to the resort’s beachfront lawns and white beach beyond. The suite’s furnishings, fabrics and soothing color scheme of beiges and greys evoke the lush tropical landscapes, the vibrant turquoise Indian Ocean, and the bleached white of Mauritian sand.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius’ pristine peninsula gives way to 2 km (1.2 mi) of magnificent white sandy beaches shaded by hundreds of palm trees. The resort’s serene oceanfront features sugar-white sands, gentle waves and plenty of private sun loungers (including dozens of cabanas). Just behind this beach is the main swimming pool, overseen by dedicated lifeguards. Welcoming for all ages, this pool offers canopied cabanas and swim-up bars (those in need of tranquility can always retreat to the adults-only pool in spa; more on that later). The beach on the resort’s other side – the lagoon side – is blissfully sheltered, with warm waters that are perfect for paddling. The far end of this beach is also home to a water sports center, where guests can try out kayaks and paddleboards (motorized water sports are offered for a fee). The oceanfront and lagoonside beaches merge at the top of the peninsula into a magnificent sand bank, which makes for great photo opportunities and spectacular views of the sunset.
- PRIME is Mauritius’ first upmarket steakhouse restaurant and regularly hosts Michelin starred chefs. During my stay, celebrated French Chef Anne-Sophie Pic hosted an exclusive pop-up at Prime, called La Dame de Pic at One&Only Le Saint Géran, which showcased the Michelin-starred chef’s delicious dishes with a spectacular dinner menu.
- Serving exciting pan-Asian, tapas-style fusion cuisine, Tapasake is a Japanese restaurant built on stilts over the lagoon. The open kitchen allows guest to watch in awe as the chefs take on the grills, masterfully invoking traditional techniques to create their Japanese specialties with a Spanish twist.
- La Terrace is the resort’s stunning waterfront all-day restaurant, which is comprised of several chic pavilions floating on water ponds. Lavish buffets are nightly hosted at La Terrace, accompanied by live music and traditional dance. Each morning, a spectacular breakfast buffet is on display in the restaurant’s open kitchen (one of the most spectacular breakfast spreads I’ve ever seen at a hotel).
- Located next to Le Terrace is L’Artisan, an artisanal bakery serving barista prepared coffee, tempting pastries and light bites throughout the day. L’Artisan also serves exclusive plant-based dishes from US celebrity chef Matthew Kenney.
- Located in front of La Terrace, under the palm trees and overlooking the Indian Ocean, is Le Badamier, an al fresco venue serving southern French and Italian cuisine with an emphasis on freshly caught local seafood.
- Located on the tip of the peninsula, next to the main pool, is La Pointe, a beach restaurant with a casual, feet-in-the-sand ambiance, thatched pavilions and open fire grills.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius features a beautiful spa center , which is centered around a stylish lap pool. Prior to, or post treatment, guests are invited to use the heat facilities including a steam room and sauna, or relax on day beds around the lap pool. Surrounding the pool are 13 treatment rooms, with some opening onto their own private garden with outdoor showers, allowing guests to relax, switch off and feel revived in their very own hideaway. Surrounded by water ponds and lush vegetation, the spa also features secluded outdoor gardens for blissful open-air therapy. In partnership with the award-winning ESPA brand, the spa offers tailored holistic experiences, ranging from pure relaxation to unique and signature wellness journeys utilizing indigenous and authentic techniques. Complementing this, the spa has also partnered with Biologique Recherche, offering bespoke facial treatments, and renowned multi-award-winning podiatrist Bastien Gonzalez to complete the wellness offering.
- At short distance from the lobby is the high energy Club One , the hub for all things activities at the resort, including a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor fitness center, two studios for group classes like spinning, zumba, kick boxing, HIIT, TRX and an outdoor training area by MyEquilibria, the first in the Indian Ocean. Guests can also enjoy complimentary yoga and Pilates classes at the yoga pavilion, and world-class sporting facilities, including floodlit tennis courts, volleyball court, putting green, and Mauritius’ first ever Padel Courts. Club One is also home to a nutritious juice and snack bar, and One&Only Le Saint Geran’s dedicated recreational centers for children and teenagers, KidsOnly and OneTribe. Offering young guests tailored activities from art classes and sporting adventures, chill out areas, movie-nights, DJ parties and exclusive barbecues, there is a host of complimentary activities to keep all ages entertained.
- The resort is managed by One&Only , one of my favorite hotel brands in the world . The fabulous One&Only brand was created in 2002 exclusively for the luxury resort market by Solomon Kerzner – a South African accountant and business magnate – and now features some of the highest-rated resorts in the most idyllic spots in the world, such as the Maldives, Mexico, Montenegro , Rwanda and Cape Town. Each resort in the One&Only collection not only offers unique design and ambiance which embraces the local surroundings, but also an unparalleled commitment to the finest experience on every possible level. Luxurious accommodation is complemented by impeccable service, exclusive wellness sanctuaries, lively entertainment and a host of activities, as well as exquisite culinary adventures from some of the world’s most accomplished chefs.
CONS & THINGS TO KNOW
It’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to fault One&Only Le Saint Géran Mauritius. The setting, design, beaches, wellness facilities, and exceptional dining offers are top-notch and world-class. Nonetheless, you may want to know the following:
- Like everywhere else in Mauritius, the terrific white sand beaches of One&Only Le Saint Géran – which rank among the best on the island – are open to the general public. However, the resort’s secluded location means that no day tourists venture out that far, so the beaches feel very private, serene and tranquil. Nonetheless, local vendors are allowed on the property’s beaches to sell goods such as shells, bracelets, and souvenirs to guests. While it wasn’t too bad, some beach hawkers were quite persistent and a bit annoying in their efforts to sell their stuff. Maybe it would be a better idea to not allow them on the beaches and instead, organize a street market with local crafts on selected evenings within the resort’s premises, which could be a win-win for both guests and street vendors.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran features a gorgeous adults-only pool at the heart of the spa. However, it’s the only dedicated adults-only area on the resort. The main pool on the beach – which is comprised of two parts, one part facing the lagoon and one part facing the ocean – is open to guests of all ages and it can be a bit crowded here when kids take over the pool, especially during the European school holidays (which was the case during my trip). IMHO, it would have been a better design concept if one part of the pool (e.g. the part facing the quieter lagoon side) was reserved for adults in search of blissful beach moments.
- One&Only Le Saint Géran mentions on its website that it has three pools . However, I could only count two real swimming pools during my trip: the main pool area on the beach near the tip of the peninsula and the adults-only pool at the spa. The third pool that is referred to by the resort on its website is the water pond surrounding the floating pavilions of Le Terrasse Restaurant, but that’s not really a pool as its only there for design purposes (it used to be a swimming pool prior to the resort’s refurbishment in 2017). You could of course have a swim here but it would be a little bit awkward to say the least :-).
- One&Only Le Saint Géran enjoys a secluded location , which is one of the main draws for most guests. But while it may be idyllic for a honeymoon couple or if you just want complete relaxation for a few days, it can fall short of expectations if you are looking for nightlife. If you prefer a bit of fun, music and action in the evening and being close to a wide variety of restaurants and clubs, this spot on the island might not be the best place for you.

BEST TIME TO VISIT
During the Mauritian summer months (November to April) the days are long, hot and humid. This is also cyclone season with January to March being the wettest months – so if you do go on a holiday to Mauritius at that time you should be prepared for some heavy rain. Since it never really gets cold on the island in winter (May to October) the average temperature simply drops from sticky to balmy. So in general, the best time to visit Mauritius for cooler, drier weather is from May to December. That said, if you’re planning to stay on the east coast, I recommend avoiding the months of July and August as this is when the wind is at its strongest on this side of the island.
HOW TO GET THERE
The resort is located a 60-minute drive from the airport, and you can book a private transfer through the hotel, or prebook a much cheaper taxi . Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SRU) is served by many airlines (click here for a continuously updated list of airlines that offer direct flights to Mauritius).

I love your content, thank you for posting such an amazing review. If I may just point out a (very) slight mistake, under the “How to Get There” section, the airport code for the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is (SRU), it’s instead (MRU). You might consider amending that one.
The One&Only St. Geran resort in Mauritius is reviewed in this post by The Luxury Travel Expert. The author gives a thorough rundown of the resort’s accommodations, dining options, and recreational opportunities. Indulge in next level luxury with One&Only
From South Africa to the Maldives, Dubai to Mauritius, immerse yourself in these luxurious settings for the ultimate antidote to life’s bustle
Words by Laura French
Travel is all about getting under the skin of a place – tasting the food, experiencing the culture, glimpsing the wildlife and taking in the landscapes.
But sometimes you deserve a little luxury to retreat to at the end of the day – a tranquil spot where you can escape the everyday, whiling away the hours lounging on a secluded beach, indulging at the spa or enjoying a new culinary experience.
One&Only Resorts put that philosophy at the heart, combining optional cultural experiences and adventures that get you out into the place with a chance to relax and treat yourself.
If you want to take the hassle out of planning a stay at one or more of its properties, Travelbag can do the work for you; the travel specialist has been tailor-making trips for over 45 years in destinations across the world, putting together carefully curated and personalised holidays.
From South Africa to Dubai, Mauritius and the Maldives, we’ve rounded up some of the most inspiring destinations that Travelbag and One&Only can take you to.
Bab Al Shams Luxury Desert Safari Resort in Dubai
South Africa
Sandwiched between the dramatic slopes of Table Mountain and the opal lures of the Atlantic, Cape Town’s scenery is reason enough in itself to visit. Add in a multitude of cultural influences, exceptional cuisine and its proximity to the Winelands, and it’s not hard to see what draws culture-curious travellers here.
Any visit should start with a trip to the city’s famous peak; you can hike to the top if you’re feeling adventurous or hop on a cable car with sweeping views along the way. Back on ground level, the V&A Waterfront is well worth a wander with shops, restaurants and attractions lining the harbour; from here ferries can shuttle you over to Robben Island, the former prison and now UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Nelson Mandela and others were held.
Close to the Waterfront, the Bo-Kaap neighbourhood deserves a spot on the list with its candy-bright architecture, cobbled streets and Cape Malay history, while the city’s plethora of flour-white beaches are worthy of some time, too – don’t miss Boulders Beach, located just outside the city and famous for its penguins.

Sala Beach House
One&Only Cape Town
For a luxury stay right in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, it’s hard to top One&Only Cape Town . The city’s attractions are on the doorstep, but there’s an emphasis on tranquillity, with the water-framed Spa Island offering a menu of exclusive ESPA treatments, and five standout bars and restaurants – including Mediterranean restaurant Isola, South African-inspired Ochre, and the country’s only Nobu.
Experiences are at the heart of the resort; head sommelier Luvo Ntezo – named South Africa’s Best Young Sommelier – and his team offer food and wine pairings in the intimate Wine Loft (home to 5,000 bottles), alongside tours of nearby wine estates, where you can get involved in grape-picking and enjoy a picnic surrounded by vineyards.
For adventure, book a yoga session atop Table Mountain, head out on a memorable whale-watching trip, or explore the waterways by stand-up paddleboard, before retreating to the largest rooms and suites in all of Cape Town; expect views over Table Mountain and the harbour to wake up to every morning.
The Maldives
Snow-white beaches, cerulean sea, swaying palms and cinematic sunsets – touching down in the Maldives is like landing in the middle of a film-set, with pristine reefs offering exceptional diving and snorkelling, and sugary shores to while away the hours on.
One&Only Reethi Rah
If you’re wanting to combine adventures with laid-back days, look to One&Only Reethi Rah , surrounded by a blanket of blue in the North Male Atoll. Translating to ‘beautiful island’, this sweep of tropical greenery is framed by 12 beaches and home to 122 beach and overwater villas, with a host of activities to get involved with – from getting PADI certified at the dive centre to snorkelling with manta rays and whale sharks.
Guests can book an excursion with resident marine biologist Ivanna Tobar to learn more about the surrounding eco-system and the resort’s reef restoration project; or charter their own private catamaran yacht to see dolphins and other marine life darting between the waves. If you fancy getting more adventurous, head out on a fishing trip on a traditional dhoni boat – chefs can prepare your catch back at the resort.
For more of a thrill, stop by the resort’s water sports centre and head out on a kayak, stand-up paddleboard or wakeboard, or head to Club One to learn tennis and padel from pro coaches. If you fancy getting back to nature, amble through the island’s 44-hectare tropical rainforest on foot or by bike.
If you’re looking to indulge, sidle up to the spa for a Maldivian-inspired treatment or in-water massage against an ocean backdrop, or lie back by one of the resort’s three pools.
You’ll find plenty of cultural and creative pursuits here, too, with art and pottery classes led by resident artists (available at the resort’s art studio or in the privacy of your own villa).
When hunger strikes, head to one of four exceptional restaurants, including Japanese at Hoshi, Middle Eastern at Fanditha and ‘garden-to-table’ dishes served beneath the palms at Botanica. Private dining experiences are also available for an extra-special occasion; think dining in twinkling, fairy-lit treetops or on a private sandbank overlooking the ocean, as the sound of the waves lulls you into a daze.
From glittering skyscrapers to colourful bazaars and billowing desert, Dubai is a city of many faces.
At its cultural heart is Dubai Creek – the historic part of the city, where labyrinthine souks overflow with fragrant, colourful spices and historic gold shops line the streets. Here you’ll find the Al Fahidi Historic District, home to traditional sandstone architecture and a handful of intriguing museums; and the Dubai Creek Harbour, where wooden abra boats ferry passengers across the waterways.
Elsewhere in the city, there’s plenty more to see; Dubai Marina makes for an idyllic stroll, with restaurants lining the promenade and yachts dappling the water. In the heart of downtown, the Burj Khalifa towers 828m tall, making it the world’s highest building; visit its observation deck for panoramic city views.
One&Only One Za-abeel
If you’re looking to explore the historic area, the recently opened, ultra-luxury One&Only One Za’abeel is ideally located around a 20-minute drive away and sits across an impressive duo of skyscrapers connected by ‘The Link’ bridge. The hotel is home to the UAE’s longest infinity pool, sprawling 120m, alongside nine bars and fine-dining restaurants spanning Indonesian, French, modern Japanese and beyond.
One&Only Royal Mirage
The city isn’t short on idyllic sandy stretches, either – not least Jumeirah Beach. Here you’ll find One&Only Royal Mirage , which sits among 65 acres of lush gardens and has its own private stretch of the beach. Spread across three sections ( The Palace , Arabian Court and The Residence), it has four pools, a spa and 12 bars and restaurants. Activities range from sailing and water sports to camel rides and desert safaris.
Bab Al Shams
If you’re looking to properly immerse yourself in the desert, though, book a stay in the heart of it. Luxury desert resort Bab Al Shams (bookable through Travelbag) is an excellent choice, with Arabian-inspired rooms, suites and villas overlooking the dunes, and a whole array of experiences on hand; think 4x4 desert drives, hot air balloon rides, guided walks, falconry shows, horse rides and more, all taking place amidst a landscape of soft, undulating sand.
Blending myriad cultures and flavourful cuisine with wildlife-filled rainforests, tree-covered peaks and powder-white beaches, Mauritius is as diverse as it is enchanting.
You’ll find a slew of natural attractions here – among them the Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve, known for its giant Aldabra tortoises; and Black River Gorges National Park, where pink pigeons, macaque monkeys and other rare species roam between trees, volcanic peaks and waterfalls.
More extraordinary still is the Seven Coloured Earth, a multi-coloured, Mars-like ocean of basalt rock formed across the millennia; and the UNESCO-listed peak of Le Morne Brabant, which offers a challenging climb (alongside a moving history; it was once a refuge for runaway slaves). The island is a hotspot for snorkelling and diving, too – not least around Blue Bay Marine Park, where iridescent angelfish, parrotfish and sea turtles dart between a vibrant coral garden.
For a dose of local culture, head to capital Port Louis to see its historic, colonial-era architecture, hilltop citadel and French, Creole and Indian influences. While you’re here, try a dholl puri (stuffed flatbread) and stop by the Central Market, where colourful handicrafts, textiles and spices spill out onto narrow, packed-out lanes.
One&Only Le Saint Géran
For an idyllic base from which to explore the highlights, look to One&Only Le Saint Géran , whose elegant rooms, suites and villas sit on a secluded peninsula. This picturesque retreat is home to a private white-sand beach and exclusive lagoon, with an array of island tours on offer – from hiking trips at Black River Gorges to kayaking through the nearby mangroves. Other adventures range from whale-watching to water-skiing, diving to helicopter trips, plus a market-to-table tour that takes you to the nearby Flacq food market before a cooking class and wine-paired Mauritian feast.
If you’d rather kick back and relax, head to the spa for treatments using Mauritian ingredients (think fresh coconut, mint, honey, clove and aloe vera), or lounge against an ocean backdrop by one of two serene outdoor pools.
When evening falls, head to one of six elegant restaurants. Highlights include Japanese fusion cuisine served with a sea view at Tapasake, fine steak cuts at Prime and a Mauritian seafood barbecue on the beach – think waves lapping gently beneath the stars as you experience island life at its most quintessential. You can do as much or as little as you like here, and that’s all part of the charm.
