IRELAND - A WHISKEY LOVER'S PARADISE!

Book an experience, private whiskey tours, golf & whiskey, private whiskey tastings, looking to book a bespoke experience, unique tours & tastings at all of ireland's whiskey distilleries, ireland - the world's hottest new whiskey destination.

In 2024, there are over 70 distilleries and brand homes on the island of Ireland. Many are open, the rest are work-in-progress. Most of these ‘whiskey stops’ are fully operational distilleries and they are dotted all over the country, often taking you off the beaten tourism path.

Whiskey Island has access to all of these whiskey stops. We operate as a full-service whiskey tour company and we create and operate bespoke whiskey trails for our guests. We carefully blend (pun intended!) a selection of memorable whiskey experiences on our trails with the best of Ireland along the way.

WHISKEY TRAILS

View all trails, dublin’s distillery trail, jameson & guinness dublin trail, the dublin whiskey story, ireland’s hidden heartlands, boyne valley whiskey trail, northern ireland whiskey trail – 2 day, ireland’s ancient east trail – 3 day.

Meet John and John (Junior & Senior). We’re a father and son duo and we both have a wealth of experience between us, especially in the whiskey tourism domain.

We share the same pride in this country and we have a particular grá (Gaelic for love) for Irish whiskey tourism, an industry that has been good to us over our combined 40 years’ experience. We’re glad to say our name is synonymous with premium whiskey experiences in Irish tourism circles, so much so that we formed Whiskey Island.

Here Are A Few Of Our Favourite Irish Whiskey Distilleries

Old bushmills distillery, co. antrim.

Located on the north coast of Northern Ireland, Bushmills is steeped in Irish history and is the country’s oldest working distillery. Water from the stream that runs by the distillery is combined with Irish barley to make a great tasting whiskey that has been a favourite of many for hundreds of years. The whiskey tour is fantastic and your guide will teach you the art of authentic ancient Irish whiskey distilling. At the end of the tour, you will be treated to a couple of drams.

Jameson Experience, Midleton, Co. Cork

This ancient distillery opened in the 17 th century and is arguably the most famous Irish whisky. The museum and visitor centre opened in 1992, and there are four different tours to choose from. We highly recommend the “Academy Experience”, where you get to visit the working distillery, witness the art of distillation in action and taste whisky straight from the barrel!

The Tullamore Distillery, Co. Offaly

This famous distillery is located in the heart of Ireland and originally opened in 1829. Although not the oldest distillery in Ireland, Tullamore was the first to create a blended whiskey. There are three different whiskey tours available to visitors:  – The Curious Tasters Journey . You will enjoy a guided tour of the distillery by an expert guide. At the end of the tour you will sample three different whiskies.  – The Whiskey Wise Master Class . This tour is similar to the “Curious Tasters Journey” except you sample 6 different whiskies throughout the tour. – The Ultimate Distillery Experience . This one is for the avid whiskey fan. Your guide takes you to a blending room where you get to create your own blend of whiskey. In addition, you get an in-depth tour of the production process. This is one of the most hands-on whiskey experiences in the world!

Kilbeggan Distillery, Co. Westmeath

Kilbeggan Distillery was registered in 1757 and sits on the idyllic banks of the River Brosna. The whiskey distillery offers three tour options:  – The Apprentice Tour . You will be guided round this ancient distillery and treated to three drams. – The “Distillers Tour” . This tour offers an opportunity to meet the distillers and taste 4 types of Kilbeggan whiskey. – The “Connoisseur Experience” . This tour allows you to bottle your own 200ml sample and enjoy an extensive tasting session.

Dingle Distillery, Co. Kerry

Kilbeggan Distillery was registered in 1757 and sits on the idyllic banks of the River Brosna. The distillery offers three distillery tour options:  – The Apprentice Tour . You will be guided round this ancient distillery and treated to three drams. – The “Distillers Tour” . What's The Buzz

Patrick Fox was a great guide and so informative! He was very knowledgeable on the whiskey we had and my husband liked his overall personality. I liked he didn’t mind we were a bit behind because of traffic. Would do this again next visit to Dublin! Highly recommend

An absolute pleasure to hear Derek share his vast knowledge of Irish Whisky. On top of his many interesting facts and insights, he is a charismatic and friendly human with a great sense of humour. A huge recommendation to try his tour.

We booked the classic whiskey tasting at the Swan Bar for my husband, my 19 year old son and myself. We were so glad we did, it was one of the best experiences of our entire trip! Derek is incredibly knowledgeable and fun, we felt we were sharing cocktails with a friend. We are whiskey novices and learned so much! It was a truly great time, and the Swan Bar was beautiful and welcoming. Just book it! You’ll love it!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting a renowned whiskey tasting experience in Dublin with a group of friends, and I must say it was an unforgettable journey into the world of whiskey. Our guide, Derek, proved to be an exceptional source of knowledge and made the entire experience truly exceptional. If you're a whiskey lover, this is an absolute must-visit destination in Dublin.

Derek’s whiskey tasting was a highlight of our trip to Dublin. He was flexible with scheduling and selected whiskey at multiple price points, including some very accessible, and affordable options (a rarity at some tastings). His interactive and conversational style ensured all of our questions were answered. His passion for his work is evident, and he’s only matched by his enthusiasm. Highly recommend.

Won't find a better Whiskey Tasting Experience. Had a wonderful night in M.P. Walsh, where Derek ran through some cracking irish whiskeys, gained a great insight into some old reliable and new emerging irish whiskies. Derek's knowledge was excellent, you would find it hard to beat Experience Irish Whiskey when it comes to having a fun night tasting the best Ireland has to offer in terms of whiskey.

Highly Recommended!! Derek is an amazing host with a crazy amount of knowledge and great delivery. He took us on a journey through Irish Whiskey with a particular emphasis on new emerging exciting Irish whiskey. He has a true passion for Irish Whiskey and the people behind the bottles which comes across throughout. A really great experience with a genuinely lovely guy. BOOK NOW!

Wonderful experience, a must for anyone visiting Ireland The experience was exceptional as Derek hosted us in a very authentic Irish pub and was extremely knowledgeable about whiskey. It was also great to be able to speak generally with a local about all things Ireland / Dublin. I would highly recommend for any visitor to Ireland.

Whether you’re a whiskey lover or not, the Irish whiskey experience is a great activity to do in Dublin alone or with a group of friends. The host, Derek, was very friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. You can learn a lot about whiskey history and try whiskey from different Irish brands.

I have done 2 tasting with Derek now and both have left me in awe. 1st was through The Village Whiskey Society and the knowledge he passed on to us was amazing. The overall set up was great and he was more than happy to entertain any questions (stupid or not lol) the whole group loved it. 2nd was for a friend's Stag. Derek was more than accommodating. We had a small group of whiskey and non whiskey drinkers. By the end of it he had educated and converted the non whiskey drinkers all while keeping everyone engaged and entertained. I can't wait for the next tasting.

Derek looked after my group when we visited Dublin just a few weeks ago in January. We were honestly blown away by his Irish Whiskey knowledge, enthusiasm, attention to detail and his professional but relaxed manner. We booked a tasting experience with him based on a solid recommendation from a friend and I can honestly say that it was even more enjoyable (and tasty) than expected. When I’m back in Dublin with another group, we would love to see Derek again. 100% would recommend Experience Irish Whiskey 🥃 Sláinte 🥃

A great evening spent with Derek as he explained the world of irish whiskey. He is a knowledgeable and passionate speaker on all things Whiskey. Would definitely recommend this experience if you are looking for an authentic irish whiskey experience 🥃🥃

Derek is such an incredible guide! He knows so much about whiskey, has a passion for it, and is really great at explaining things to less knowledgeable people. The tasting took place in a heritage pub in Dublin, and we all really enjoyed the experience and the setting! If you have a couple of hours, want to have fun, and also get a good understanding of this popular Irish drink, then search no further! This is a must do for you!

Stephanie O

From start to finish Derek was energetic and had a wealth of whiskey knowledge like no one i have met before. I have been to a number of whiskey tasting experiences in the past but none come close. Derek has pure passion for whiskey and brings you through the whiskey story connected to each brand but also adds in some history. Highly recommend for anyone interested in having a real whiskey experience.

An rud nach leigheasann im ná uisce beatha níl aon leigheas air.

This is one of Santina’s favourite ancient Gaelic proverbs, the meaning of which translates to: What butter or whiskey does not cure cannot be cured. She says “These were the two best things an Irish home could have in the larder. The phrase shows not only the reverence the Irish have for their local dairy products and, of course, their whiskey, but it also hints at something that has always existed but is now being more fully appreciated: the combination and intersection of Irish food, drink, and culture.”

Santina points to the superb raw materials at the heart of Irish cuisine. “We have the best dairy produce in the world; we have a fantastic culture of producing artisanal, family-farm produced food items.” All of which can work with Irish whiskeys.

This work has been showcased through national and international media including The Irish Times , Lonely Planet , Forbes Magazine, various RTE shows including Nationwide, The Summer Show, Catherine Fulvio Celebrates . She has also featured on PBS shows such as Ireland: County by County and Ireland with Michael.

Santina is passionate about enhancing Ireland’s status as quality food & drinks tourism destination by incorporating a high quality, authentic food offering into the country’s already renowned reputation for beverage and hospitality culture.

What People Say About Us

Tripadvisor logo

Wow what a great day! wonderful experience, we enjoyed our tour and found out so much information about the irish whiskey produced at Teelings. The cocktails we had on our tasting experience were delicious, and such a unique way to show how the whiskey can be used. Afterwards we got a drink at the bar and met the friendly bartender Denis, who was so helpful and well informed, and gave us his personal recommendations, such a great handsome young guy, and great experience all round! 9 Best Dublin Whiskey Tours (Distilleries + Whiskey Tastings)

9 Best Dublin Whiskey Tours (Distilleries + Whiskey Tastings)

If you’re looking to do a Dublin distillery tour or if you fancy trying a guided whiskey tasking in Dublin, you’re spoiled for choice .

In recent years, I’ve done each of the Dublin distillery tours (e.g. Teeling, Roe & Co. and Jameson) and they rarely disappoint.

I’ve also tried several of the guided whiskey tours in Dublin and, while some are excellent, others are just alright .

Below, you’ll find the both the best distillery tours in Dublin along with some whiskey tasting tours that are worth considering. Cheers!

Table of Contents

Some need-to-knows before booking any Dublin whiskey tours

dublin whiskey tour

So, booking a tour is usually fairly straightforward , but I can’t begin to tell you the amount of times we’ve heard of someone booking onto one of the Dublin whiskey tours, only to be disappointed .

The below points may seem  obvious, but they’re worth being aware of before you make a booking (especially point 1).

1. Whiskey tours vs distillery tours

There’s a big difference between visiting a Dublin whiskey distillery and taking one of the many  Dublin whiskey tours. When you visit a distillery, you’ll take a guided tour. Guided whiskey tasting in Dublin usually involves trying different whiskies in one or more pubs .

2. Read the Ts&Cs carefully

Regardless of whether you’re doing a tour of the city’s top whiskey bars or you’re taking a Dublin distillery tour, make sure to read what’s included . On some, you’ll just get the guided tour, with no tasters included . With others, you’ll get samples included as part of the tour.

3. Time of day has a big impact on experience

If you’re taking one of the Dublin whiskey tours, it can be easy to aim for the latest slot so that you can follow up the tour with a night in one of the many pubs in Dublin . The only problem with this is that the pubs visited on these tours are also busier (unless they’re held in a dedicated room). If possible, aim for late afternoon , as places tend to be quieter.

The first section takes a look at the various Dublin distillery tours. And, thanks to a resurgence in distilling, there’s plenty to choose from.

Note: if you book a tour through one of the links below we  may make a tiny commission that helps us keep this site going. You won’t pay extra, but we really do appreciate it.

1. Jameson Distillery Bow St.

Jameson Distillery

Courtesy Jameson Distillery Bow St, Dublin

Although Jameson moved the bulk of their operations down to Midleton in Cork in the late 1900s, the Jameson Distillery on Bow St. is still open.

Set inside what is arguably one of the most famous whiskey distilleries in Ireland , the distillery opened by John Jameson in the late 1700s.

Enter the impressive building and discover the story behind the world’s most famous Irish whiskey brands while sampling a variety of whiskeys. This is regarded as the best whiskey tour in Dublin for good reason.

Key info on this Dublin distillery tour:

  • Cost: Around €30 p/p
  • How long it lasts:  45 minutes
  • It includes: Guided tour, whiskey tasting and a Jameson cocktail
  • See reviews + book: Right here

2. Pearse Lyons Distillery

Pearse Lyons

Photo left: Donal Murphy. Others: Killian Whyte (via Fáilte Ireland)

The Pearse Lyons Distillery is arguably the most unique whiskey distillery in Dublin, as you can see from the photos above.

It was founded by the late Pearse Lyons and the distillery is housed within the walls of an old church (the stained glass windows above should give you a sense of what to expect!).

Visitors will discover the story of Pearse Lyons, from his days working at the Harp brewery in Louth to his transformation of an old and dilapidated church in Dublin’s Liberties.

  • Cost: Around €22 p/p
  • How long it lasts: 1 hour
  • It includes: Guided tour and a whiskey tasting including 3 whiskies

3. Roe & Co Distillery

Roe and Co Distillery

Photos courtesy Diageo Ireland Brand Homes

Diageo’s Roe & Co Distillery is the newest whiskey distillery in Dublin, and you’ll find it a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse . I had a drink here at the end of last year, and the place is very well kitted out.

Everything from the toilet to the seats at the bar feel plush, although the building has retained a nice rustic feel to it.

Those that visit can hear the story of George Roe (the legendary 19th-century whiskey pioneer) and dive into the golden era of Irish whiskey .

  • Cost: Around €25 p/p
  • It includes: Fully-guided tour, a choice of 2 workshops and a cocktail

4. The Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Teeling’s Whiskey

The Teeling Distillery was, interestingly enough, the first whiskey distillery in Dublin to be built in 125 years when it launched a few years back.

You’ll find it finely plonked in what’s known as Dublin’s ‘Golden Triangle’, which was once a historic distilling district at the heart of the city.

The Teeling’s distillery opened its doors to the public in 2015 and has since played a key part in Dublin’s vibrant whiskey revival.

Those that visit Teelings can join a tour and discover the history behind Walter Teeling’s original craft distillery (it was located on Marrowbone Lane).

  • Cost: Around €18 p/p
  • It includes: Fully-guided tour of an operational distillery Tasting of the award-winning Teeling whiske

5. The Dublin Liberties Distillery

Dublin Liberties Distillery

Photos via Dublin Liberties Distillery on FB

The Dublin Liberties Distillery is set in a modern, state-of-the-art distillery on Mill St., where it’s home to one of the lesser-known Dublin whiskey tours.

I’ve been hearing great things about this place for a while now. The visitor experience is said to be immersive and the guides, by all accounts, are excellent.

If you head off on the tour of this Dublin distillery, you’ll discover the history of Dublin’s Liberties district and you’ll get an insight into the distilling process that takes place.

  • Cost: Around €17 p/p
  • How long it lasts: 45 minutes
  • It includes: Welcome drink, guided tour and whiskey tasting

The second section of our guide takes a look at the various Dublin whiskey tours that don’t  take you into a distillery.

Below, you’ll find everything from the Irish Whiskey Museum and the Whiskey Tasting Tour to much, much more.

1. Whiskey Tasting Tour of Dublin

best irish whiskey in ireland

This 2-hour whiskey tasting in Dublin takes your tastebuds on a food and drink adventure to The Lincolns Inn and the Palace Bar in Temple Bar (sample some of the best Guinness in Dublin ).

The tour is led by an expertly trained whiskey guide and you’ll sample 5 Irish whiskies along with cheeses, Irish bread and chocolate.

Key info on this whiskey tour in Dublin:

  • Cost: Around €55 p/p
  • How long it lasts: 2 hours
  • It includes: Tasting of 5 whiskeys with cheese, soda bread and chocolate

2. The Irish Whiskey Museum

I visited the Irish Whiskey Museum a couple of years ago as a going-away present for a friend. If you, like me, wouldn’t be the biggest fan of whiskey, the tour at the Irish Whiskey Museum in Dublin is a good way to ease yourself into it.

You’ll learn about the history of the drink from a very energetic guide, and you’ll get to sample a number of different whiskies, which helps you get a gauge of what you like and what you don’t.

The one thing that this Dublin whiskey tour confirmed for me is that you’d have to beat me to get me to take a sip of peaty whiskey ever again.

  • It includes: Guided tour and a master whiskey tasting session

3. The Dublin Whiskey Experience

Next up is The Dublin Whiskey Experience . Led by an expert guide with 20-years experience in the hospitality sector, this tour packs a punch, going off reviews online.

The tour is €70 p/p and takes you around the city, trying different whiskies while taking in the history of whiskey in Dublin.

  • Cost: Around €70 p/p
  • It includes: Guided tour and whiskey tasting

Whiskey tour Dublin: Which ones have we missed?

There are heaps of different whiskey distilleries in Dublin that you can drop into for a nosey around and a drink. I’ve no doubt that we may have unintentionally missed some great ones in the guide above.

If you’ve been on any Dublin whiskey tours recently that you’d like to recommend, let me know in the comments below.

Or, hop into our guides on the best things to do in Dublin for more activities in the capital.

What is the best whiskey tour Dublin has to offer?

Personally, I think the Jameson Distillery Bow St, Roe & Co Distillery, Teeling Whiskey Distillery and the Pearse Lyons Distillery are the best Dublin whiskey tours.

What Dublin distillery tour is the best?

It’s widely regarded that the Jameson Distillery tour is the best. However, Teeling and Pearse Lyons both pack a punch, too.

What are whiskey tours of ireland.

Irish whiskey, "Uisce Betha" in traditional Gaelic (meaning water of life) has been distilled on the fair isle of Ireland since the middle ages . It was once the most popular spirit in the world with Dublin alone producing over 10 million gallons per annum. Although a decline in the early 1900s forced the closure of most of the great whiskey distilleries of Ireland a massive resurgence in popularity in modern times has allowed some to reopen and even more new distilleries to flourish. Today you can tour many of these wonderful Irish Whiskey distilleries and hear how this fine Irish "aqua vitae" is produced and of course sample some of its rare and wonderful flavours.

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours You Should Consider for Your Trip to Ireland

My first tour of an Irish whiskey distillery was Bushmills in County Antrim.

It was a blustery day in November. Snow was spitting from the sky and I was wrapped up in my Big Bird yellow jacket.

ireland whiskey tours

Instead of swinging on the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, we opted to get out of the weather and try a bit of Irish whiskey (a very good decision I’d say).

As we collected our tickets for the tour and began exploring the Bushmills memorabilia in the large entrance hall, the lovely hostess asked if I wanted a hot toddy.

If I wasn’t warmed up already, I certainly was by the time my drink was done. Perfectly hot whiskey, water, honey, cinnamon and clove.

Irish Whiskey Distillery Hot Toddy

Even though we don’t drink too much, I am tempted to make some for the holidays this year. I don’t think Joe would mind. :-)

In 2017 we went to the Dingle Distillery–so you’d think I’ve had enough. But I’m already working on our plans for our next trip to Ireland, and I am definitely planning another tour.

Thinking that we’ll do something a little less well-known, I am loving the sound of Pearse Lyons Distillery in Dublin.

Housed in St. James church, the tour includes the traditional Irish whiskey distillery bit, but also history/tour of the church and cemetery.

Sounds right up my alley.

20 Irish Whiskey Distillery Tours

Earlier this year, I put together a list of breweries that you can tour in Ireland. It’s become quite a popular reference, so I thought a distillery tour list was due.

You should know that the Irish whiskey business is booming (so book ahead to guarantee your spot).

I’ve included a few distilleries at the bottom of this list that don’t have tours (or offer them quite yet). But, check their websites for info, because many seem to be making plans.

20!! Wow I’ve got a ways to go. We have done Jameson in Midleton (twice ?), Kilbeggan and Tullamore. We tried to do Bushmills but the day we were there very high winds prevented tours because slate tiles were being blown off the roof—too dangerous!! However, at the reception desk they did give us a nice small bottle of Bushmills since we couldn’t do the tour. I obviously need to put a few of these on my itinerary for 2018!! ?

I know! I’ve got a ways to go to! 2 down 18 to go. Haha! There are quite a few that are at the top of my list. I’m wondering how long it will take me to get to ’em (and how many new ones will open up in the next few years!).

Well that was nice that Bushmills at least gave you a little parting glass. :-)

My wife and I toured both Jamison’s in Midleton and Kilbeggan. Both were good tours, Jamison’s was guided and Kilbeggan’s was self-guided. We also visited the tasting room/store for Tullimore D.E.W. but not the distillery itself. I agree that even if you are not a whiskey drinker, taking a distillery tour is lots of fun. On my 2018 trip I’ll be over-nighting in Midleton and will visit the store even if I don’t take the tour,.

They really are a lot of fun. Just learning about the process and the stories of each distillery (which often is more about the people and the community than it is about the whiskey itself) is worth the price of admission without the gratis drink at the end. Enjoy your time in Midleton! So much to see in that area that many miss. I bet you’ll love it!

Go to Tullamore. Made outside of Tullamore for years, they have returned their operations to their town of origin. Great whiskey and a very good tour. The town of Tullamore is probably worth a stop for some of its pubs. Not a long drive out of Dublin if you’re looking for an easy day trip.

Love this Lee! I’ve had so many of my one-on-one clients go to Tullamore and say the same thing. It’s high on my list to visit!

I would think the best distillery tours and tastings are in the small independent distilleries. Many of the Irish distilleries are owned by big international companies and lack the charm of the local independents. Similar to visiting distilleries in Scotland, the best ones are the small ones that do everything in house on a small scale. I’m interested in your list because a lot of these are not ones you here about.

I couldn’t agree with you more Mark. I love, love, love small and intimate experiences. The guides aren’t typically hired to just do the tour–they are usually involved with the actual process. This is true for lots of experiences in Ireland I think.

I am really intrigued by Nephin Distillery–while they’re just getting up and going, the strong community vibe and the hospitality of the owners really seems to shine through in the website.

Glad to hear the list was helpful!! :-)

Thank you for compiling this list. My husband works at a distillery here in the States, and I have just discovered that balancing our Ireland trips between hill-walking and distilleries makes us both happy. A gin distillery we hope to visit this year is http://thebearadistillery.ie/our-story/ in Castletownbere.

My husband took the day long Irish Whiskey Academy class at Midleton last year and learned so much from it. It is not cheap, but for a deep dive into understanding the science and chemistry of distilling, it was well worth the cost.

Welcome Susan! I am hope it’s helpful. :-) That distillery looks great! I’ll have to add it to the list. Thank you!!

I have heard nothing but absolutely wonderful things about all the tours Midleton does. That one is still on our bucket list, but we love Cork so I don’t think it will be on there long. :-)

We are planning a trip in May 2020 and would love to do dinner distillery tours. Of course Jameson, but would also like to do Teelling, Bushmills and Tulamore DEW. Thanks for the great info!

Welcome Suzie!! I think you’ll love them. I’d put a plug in for Pearse Lyons or Kilbeggan too! They are fantastically atmospheric and historic.

Great list, Planning a whiskey run to Ireland in May and just browsing to see the various ones. You have a great list.

will watch it carefully.

If you haven’t done it yet, the Whiskey Museum in Dublin is fascinating. It talks about different types of Irish whiskey, where they came from, and how they’ve survived the decades. Plus…samples!

We were the first specialist distilleries tour company in Scotland and it has long been been our ambition to introduce our clients to Irish distilleries and whiskey.

This hasn’t really been an option as, for many years, there have only been 2 or 3 distillery tours available.

Today, all that has changed, and there are now 12 working distilleries spread throughout the country. In the next year or so, if all goes to plan, there should be another 5 or 6 distilleries opening.

2016-10-distillery-visit

Whiskey could almost be considered a fledgling Industry in Ireland, but the tradition and history of distilling has existed for over a thousand years. Indeed, Irish monks are said to have taken whisky and distilling to Scotland. During your tour we will introduce you to one of the most beautiful and friendly countries in the world.

Day 8: Dublin

Today we will explore our Capital City where you'll learn about history from Viking Dublin, its medieval past to modern history and its heroes.

Located in the heart of the historic Liberties, against the backdrop of a city steeped in whiskey history, the Teeling Whiskey Distillery opened its doors in 2015 as the first new distillery in Dublin for over 125 years.

Once home to over 37 distilleries, Dublin is no stranger to the craft of whiskey making and we are proud to have brought the tradition of distilling back into the heart of Dublin city centre with the opening of our distillery.

Next up is the Guinness Storehouse area to learn about Arthur Guinness. Arthur must have had a lot of confidence in his brewery when he took out the lease on St James’s Gate in 1759, as he took out a 9,000-year lease.

Arthur was 100% right to believe in himself, Guinness is the biggest selling stout in the world with 10 million glasses being sold every day in 150 countries.

This brings your Irish adventure to an end as we transport you back to Dublin with a suitcase full of very special memories.

Low Season 2024

Mid season 2024, high season 2024, example private/chauffeur driven tour itinerary.

Day 1. Dublin. Arrive in Dublin Airport from your overnight flight. After clearing customs transfer on own via taxi or uber. You make your way to your hotel. You will have the rest of the afternoon free to explore Dublin. Today we will visit the famed Jamison Distillery . In 1780 John Jameson established Jamison Distillery. Jameson Irish Whiskey is made by blending rich pot still whiskey made from both malted and unmalted barley, with the finest grain whiskey, both distilled 3 times for smoothness. Enjoy the Black Barrel 90-minute Blending Class. Overnight the Camden Hotel.

Day 2 Dublin On Own. I would suggest a Hop on Hop Off Dublin Bus Pass. You will be sure to see St. Patrick’s Cathedral where writer Jonathan Swift gave his sermons, The G.P.O. on O’Connell Street scene of the 1916 Easter Uprising where the bullet holes remain to this day. Drive through famous Phoenix Park where the Pope said Mass in late 70’s and finally Trinity College to view the 8th century manuscripts, The Book of Kells, still preserved as they were when the Monks produced them all those centuries ago. Afternoon we will visit the Guinness Storehouse, where we will also have a brew at the Gravity Bar. Next a visit to the Teeling Distillery is in the list! Overnight at The Camden Hotel. Tonight, we make our way via quick taxi or Uber to Taylors Three Rock Dinner Cabaret. Taylors Three Rock is a 3-part show with Irish folk singers, an Irish comedian, and Irish Riverdancers. DINNER AT TAYLORS THREE ROCK.

Day 3 Dublin-to Ballykeefe Distillery-Cork. After breakfast we meet our Driver Guide in the lobby of the hotel. We then make our way to Kilkenny. Time for a whiskey tour that will be sure to delight all! Ballykeefe Distillery is proudly owned and managed by the Ging Family who trace their unbroken farming lineage as far back as written records exist. Morgan’s fascination with the shared history of Irish farming and Irish Whiskey, led him to dream of one day diversifying his farming enterprise with the addition of a distillery as was so common centuries ago. It took 25 years of research and painstaking effort to bring his dream to fruition. The tour will be a journey through every part of the Ballykeefe operation, which has revived the lost traditions of a family farm distillery, with a unique commitment to environmental protection, carbon neutrality and sustainability. Time to visit Kilkenny Castle if you like! Continue to Cork. Overnight Imperial Hotel Cork

Day 4 Kinsale. Time this morning to enjoy quaint picturesque Kinsale. We then enjoy a “Walking Food Tour of Kinsale” with time to browse the artisan streets of this food capital. This afternoon we then travel along the coast, “The Irish Riviera” to the seaside village in Youghal. Enjoy some time in this quaint town. This afternoon we continue to Midleton famous for its school, Middleton College, founded in 1596 and its Midleton Distillery founded in 1825 which manufactures Irish whisky or what many Irish refer to as “Uisce Betha” meaning “Water of Life. Return to Kinsale. Overnight Imperial Hotel Cork.

Day 5 Cork-Clonakilty-Skibbereen-Bantry-Glengarriff- Killarney. We depart Cork and travel to Old Head, the nearest point to the spot where the Lusitania was sunk in 1915. It is a lovely drive and worth the trip to admire the setting. Clonakilty is next and here; castles dot the shores of the bay. Colorful and traditional shop fronts have hand painted signs that reveal their contents. Here too, is the Michael Collins Centre. It tells the story of the Irish patriot who was born here and rose to prominence during and after the Easter Rising. We enjoy a visit to the Clonakility Distillery! Clonakilty Distillery founders, the Scully family, have farmed by this coastal land for eight successive generations. A commitment to both heritage and innovation has led us to revive ancient malting barley varieties. Privileged to be guardians of these scarce grains, they nurture them to create a range of whiskies that honors this unique inheritance. Continue along the coast and make a visit to the Drombeg Stone Circle. It is known locally as The Druid’s Altar and dates to around 900 bc. The circle of 13 stones is in a magnificent setting with beautiful sea views. The busy town of Skibbereen is rightly known as the capital of West Cork. It is the “hub” from which the many “sparkling jewels” of the area can be reached. The town has strong ties to the famine which devastated the local community and there is a large famine graveyard in nearby Abbystrowry. The Heritage Centre here has an excellent exhibition. Eight miles southwest the little fishing village of Baltimore is located. It is then onto Killarney for our overnight. It is onto Killarney. Sites of interest in the town reflect its strong religious and educational history. Killarney was a monastic settlement from the 5th or 6th Century and house settlement began here from around 1500. Explore colorful laneways, a fine cathedral and experience the ambience of busy streets in the town center. Nestled amidst deep, lake filled valleys with astounding sights such as the famous Ladies’ View (Named after Queen Victoria’s Ladies’ in Waiting) and the MacGillicuddy Reeks – Ireland’s largest mountain range, home of Carrauntoohil the country’s largest peak. Overnight at The Great Southern Hotel Killarney

Day 6 Dingle. After breakfast we depart Killarney for the Dingle Peninsula. The journey begins with some of the most magnificent scenery in all of Ireland. The little town of Dingle is straight out of a story book. The fishing boats in the harbor and tiny brightly painted pubs portray a time that has continued to stand still. The population of 1500 people and only 52 pubs are ready to welcome you this afternoon. Worth the wait is the native seafood chowder served up at lunch time with freshly baked brown bread. We continue on to Slea Head. Along the way, we will see bee-hive style huts, originally inhabited by 12th century monks, which overlook the rugged Blasket Islands. The awe-inspiring beauty of this particular area is unmatched. There is no other landscape in western Europe with the density and variety of archaeological monuments as found on the Dingle Peninsula. This afternoon we visit the Dingle Distillery. When the Dingle Whiskey Distillery was founded, 500 casks were made available to whiskey lovers, investors, and connoisseurs. Those who chose to invest in a cask are known as Founding Fathers of the Dingle Whiskey Distillery. Each of these casks is individual, painted with the Founding Father’s name, fill date and cask number. Founding Fathers had the option of maturing their whiskey in whatever wood – port, sherry, madeira, or bourbon, that they wished. Overnight at The Great Southern Hotel Killarney.

Day 7 Killarney-Tullamore-Kilbeggan-K Club. Morning departure from Killarney. We continue through Limerick, Ireland’s 3rd largest city and home to author Frank McCourt who wrote Angela’s Ashes. Limerick is an area steeped in history. The origin of Limerick city dates to the 9th century a site settled by the Vikings. Limerick City is known as “City of the Broken Treaty”, due to the treaty which was signed surrendering the city to William. The terms of the treaty included respect for the rights of Catholics were immediately breached. The treaty was signed on the Treaty Stone which can still be seen today. King John’s Castle is a fortified 13th century Castle on ‘King’s Island’ in the heart of medieval Limerick. The castle overlooking the River Shannon opens an exciting window on the lives and stories of the people through political upheaval, war and famine. We continue through the Irish Midlands first to the Tullamore Dew Distillery. We continue to Kilbeggan Distillery. Kilbeggan Distillery is an Irish whiskey distillery situated on the River Brosna in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, Ireland. It is owned by Beam Suntory. A small pot still distillery, the licence to distil dates to 1757, a copy of which can be seen in the distillery. Overnight K Club.

Day 8 Dublin Airport. Transfer on own via uber or taxi to Dublin Airport.

'Wonderful' underrated Irish city home to whiskey history, exotic wildlife and more

Cork City is a thriving center of Ireland's south filled with history, good food and spectacular sights. Yet it is often overlooked for its better known neighbors like Dublin and Galway .

However, the county of Cork is worth a holiday all on its own , with something for every kind of visitor. There's whale watching, distilleries, walking tours and more all within driving distance.

Here are some ideas to start off with when planning a quick trip to the Rebel County.

Two Irish cities named among Europe's best 'hidden gems'

Irish city ranked among best in Europe for free attractions

The Midleton Distillery

The Midleton Distillery Experience is a must for any fans of Irish whiskey. Midleton, located about 14 miles from the city center, is the only location where the world's third most popular whiskey, Jameson, is made.

Over 10.7 million bottles of Jameson were sold last year, a record high for an Irish spirit, and many of them made their way to the US. The Midleton Distillery is the epicenter of it all, pumping out millions of casks of Jameson, Powers, Midleton Rare, Redbreast, Spot whiskeys and more since 1975.

An interactive tour runs multiple times per day at the distillery and hundreds of visitors are hosted daily. Groups are shown around the large complex by a knowledgeable guide who can answer every whiskey or history question they might have.

The experience focuses more on the history of Irish whiskey than the process itself, though the steps are also broken down into an understandable fashion. Visitors can check out the world's biggest copper still at the site, as well as the historic grain stores that were once used as military barracks and mills.

Groups will also learn about prohibition, the differences between Scotch and Irish whiskey, how barrels are made and more. The tour ends with a tasting and a complimentary cocktail at the distillery's modern new bar.

Take in the view

The Shandon Bells at the Church of St Anne have become a symbol of Cork City. The 18th century tower is home to a clock that rings out every hour, as well as 360 degree views of the city atop its 132 steps.

The church is open to visitors and the park nearby is always buzzing with people. It's located right near the city center, where countless shops and an award-winning gallery, the Crawford Art Gallery, can also entertain you before or after your walk.

For a more luxurious experience of Cork's views, head to The Montenotte Hotel, a four star boutique hotel perched over the city.

The Montenotte has quickly risen to become one of Cork's most premiere hotels and it recently opened a new cocktail bar called The Glasshouse that's proved popular with locals and visitors alike. The public can also enjoy afternoon tea or a drink on the terrace of the hotel, called Panorama, and take in the breathtaking view of the River Lee.

The hotel also has a large garden for guests to enjoy and it recently unveiled a unique Woodland Suite experience for special occasions. The swanky experience allows guests to sleep under the stars in luxurious octagon-shaped suites with expansive bathrooms, private terraces and access to exclusive Clubhouse to enjoy curated food and drink offerings.

Go on a food tour

Cork is known for vibrant restaurant scene and the city and county have long been tied to culinary greatness. There are many options to choose from, but no trip to Cork is complete without a walk around the English Market.

Independent grocers have been trading in the market, one of Europe’s oldest, since 1788 and the historic, central building has survived wars and the Great Famine . It was even visited by Queen Elizabeth II during her trip to Ireland in 2011.

There are plenty of lunch and dinner options near the market. Good Day Deli is an award-winning spot located just a 10 minute walk from the city center in the beautiful surroundings of Nano Nagle Place, a restored convent where visitors can enjoy thriving gardens and museum displays.

Goldie, a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner, is also a name sure to come up amongst Ireland's foodies. Chef and owner Aishling Moore was named the best chef in Ireland earlier this year and her kitchen, which utilizes the daily catch from local boats, operates a well-priced, rotating menu that shows off the best of Irish seafood.

For vegetarians, there’s Paradiso, another Michelin Bib Gourmand winner, Sonflour Italian, or the long-running Izz Café. Ichigo Ichie on Sheares Street is the city’s lone Michelin Star winner for 2023.

The Marina Market, an indoor food market with everything from burritos and pizzas to doughnuts and smoothies, is also worth a stop for anyone looking for a casual bite. The Covid-era success story is always buzzing with diners from all over the city and county, and it’s an easy way to please a group of picky eaters.

If you can't choose, try out one of the city's food tours, which can easily be booked online.

Take a trip to the sea

Cork City is located under 30 minutes from the start of Ireland's famous Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Kinsale marks the beginning of the coastal driving route and it's easily accessible by bus or car for a quick day trip from Cork City.

A sister town of Newport, Rhode Island , Kinsale is famous for its yachting, bright buildings, and fresh seafood. There's a daily walking tour of the town, but the best thing to do is to sit back and enjoy the views from one of the local pubs or restaurants.

Cobh offers a similar experience in the eastern part of Cork, and it can be reached quickly by train from the city. The top thing to do during a visit is The Titanic Experience, where you can learn all about the passengers who boarded the fateful ship in Cobh before it took off on its fateful journey to New York City .

If you're up for a longer spell in the car, head to Baltimore, another breathtaking coastal town on the Wild Atlantic Way. The trip takes about an hour and 20 minutes but the views from the harbor are worth it.

For a special experience, join Whale Watch West Cork for a half day excursion across Baltimore Harbor. Minke, Fin and Humpback Whales can all be spotted in Ireland's waters at different times of the year, as well as Common Dolphins, Seals and Harbour Porpoises.

The tour's operator, marine expert Nic Slocum, talks visitors through all of the breeds while navigating the Atlantic for a memorable experience with plenty of photo opportunities.

Apart from the wildlife, you can also see the Fastnet Lighthouse, known as Ireland's teardrop to US immigrants, aboard the ship and explore Cape Clear Island during a quick stopover.

Kiss the Blarney Stone

The Irish are famous for talking, and you may have heard someone ask if you've kissed the Blarney Stone if you're prone to yapping. The stone is a real artifact that has been preserved, and it's worth a trip to see it if you're in Cork.

Blarney is located about a 15 minute drive from the city center and it's world famous castle is easy to get to by bus or taxi.

Built nearly six hundred years ago by one of Ireland’s greatest chieftans, Cormac MacCarthy, Blarney Castle attracts over 200,000 people every year. Visitors can tour the castle and explore the gardens, but the big thing to do is to kiss the Blarney Stone.

The limestone block is built into the castle's battlements and those who choose to kiss it (it does get cleaned) are lowered on their backs and hang over an edge to get the job done. Those who kiss it are said to be gifted with the ability to talk forevermore - hopefully about their experiences in the stunning county of Cork.

ireland whiskey tours

By Megan Specia Photographs by Therese Aherne

Megan Specia is a correspondent for The New York Times covering Ireland and Britain. She lived in Dublin for nearly five years and returns as often as she can.

In Dublin, the Irish capital and an enduring favorite for visitors, the city’s history can feel within touching distance — it was little over a century ago that many key moments of the country’s founding played out on these streets. Still, a strikingly modern future is taking shape as Dublin grows into its role as a center of European tech innovation . As for the present fabric, visitors will find a flourishing food scene focused on local sourcing and sustainability and a whiskey renaissance that has brought new distilleries into established neighborhoods. While Dublin has become a more international hub, locals have made efforts to ensure what makes the city unique — its spirited personality and famed hospitality — doesn’t get entirely swallowed up by a push for growth.

Recommendations

  • 14 Henrietta Street , a house built for the Georgian aristocracy that was later turned into tenement flats and now a museum, is where you can trace the city’s changing fortunes.
  • Kilmainham Gaol is where the organizers of the 1916 Easter Rising spent their final days imprisoned during a turning point in Irish history.
  • Marsh’s Library , Ireland's oldest public library, looks much as it did when it opened in 1707, with the books still kept in their original order on the shelves.
  • Christ Church Cathedral has stood at the center of this city for nearly 1,000 years, but it’s in the medieval crypt where its history most comes to life.
  • Hugh Lane Gallery has a collection of modern and contemporary art where you can delve into the chaos of a creative mind at the Irish painter Francis Bacon’s recreated studio.
  • Roe & Co. , one of the city’s newest distilleries and part of Dublin’s whiskey renaissance, has tours and blending classes.
  • St. Stephen’s Green is an idyllic Victorian park and central oasis.
  • The Forty Foot in Sandycove is a famed public bathing pool where serious sea swimmers and cold water enthusiasts swim year round in the Irish Sea.
  • James Joyce Tower and Museum is housed in a seaside fort that the Irish writer James Joyce immortalized in his novel “Ulysses.”
  • Mae Restaurant puts the best of modern Irish cuisine on display in an unfussy dining room above a wine shop.
  • The Cobblestone , a north Dublin institution, hosts traditional music sessions nightly and is the perfect place for a pint on the city’s north side.
  • The Fumbally , a beloved cafe in the Dublin 8 district, is where locally grown ingredients take center stage.
  • Grano , an Italian restaurant with housemade pastas, draws inspiration from Dublin’s shifting international identity.
  • Note is a wedge-shaped bistro where modern European dishes use the finest local ingredients, like Connemara oysters and Irish beef.
  • Bar Pez is a Spanish tapas-style wine bar with Irish seafood at its core.
  • Grogan’s Castle Lounge offers excellent people-watching with a creamy pint of Guinness.
  • Bread 41 is an organic bakery that has customers flocking from all over town for its pastries and bread.
  • The Irish Design Shop is where you can browse prints, jewelry and pottery from some of the country’s best creators.
  • Industry and Co. is an independent homeware and gift store that stocks European and homegrown makers.
  • George’s Street Arcade offers an eclectic mix of small shops and stands in a red-brick covered market from the Victorian era.
  • For a solid new offering, try the Mont , a trendy boutique hotel with rooms that have both industrial and mid-century influences. The hotel is just off of leafy Merrion Square, a short stride to the best of the city’s sights, with rates starting at 204 euros, or about $218.
  • The Wilder Townhouse , in a convenient and quiet corner of the city, is a converted Victorian townhouse with a variety of room sizes that range from the diminutive “Shoebox” rooms (starting at €209) to suites with lounge areas (starting at €379).
  • One of Dublin’s best-kept summer secrets is that visitors can book student accommodations at Trinity College while classes are out of session. Channel your best “Normal People” college experience and explore the leafy squares and historic buildings from these affordable rooms. This isn’t a hotel — rooms are available in both newly constructed and older buildings on campus — but the basic rooms are clean and central. Some are ensuite (starting at €153) within a shared apartment with a kitchen and lounge, perfect for groups traveling together. (Singles with shared bathrooms start at €93.)
  • Short-term rentals abound in the city. Picking a spot in the central Dublin 1 or 2 neighborhoods puts you among the major sites. The government plans to introduce legislation to regulate short-term letting, but as of summer 2024, it had not yet been put in place.
  • Dublin’s compact city center is incredibly walkable . For longer journeys across town, the Luas — the city’s tram system — has two main lines that extend through town and ticket machines at every stop (€1.70 for a return journey in zone 1). The Dublin Area Rapid Transit system , or DART, offers trains to the nearby suburbs and the coast. Taxis are abundant, and while Uber is available, the ride-hailing app can only be used to book licensed taxis. Dublin is slowly becoming a more cycle-friendly city, and Dublin B ikes , a bicycle-sharing network, has stands across the city — €5 for a three-day pass, or €3.50 for a one-day ticket.

The bottom of a wooden stairwell in an interior hallway with fading paint.

The transformation of 14 Henrietta Street, an imposing red-brick Georgian building on Dublin’s north side, traces the city’s own changing fortunes. The house, built for the aristocracy nearly 300 years ago, was divided into 19 tenement flats in the late 19th century as the area became more deprived and crowded. By 1911, more than 100 people lived here in cramped flats and unsanitary conditions before longstanding calls for change finally spurred housing reforms. The last tenants left in the 1970s. Now, after conservation work that finished in 2018, the house is open to guided tours (10 euros, or about $10.70) that transport visitors into a bygone era and honor the stories of the people who called this place home. As Dublin again reckons with a housing crisis , the lessons of Henrietta Street feel particularly apt.

A messy art studio buckets of paint and brushes piled on the floor and shelves chaotically, with many yellowed papers strewn around. The walls have smears of different colored paint on them.

Slashed canvases, walls splashed with vibrant reds and blues, and paint pots, photos, books and boxes spilled onto the floor: Colorful preserved chaos welcomes visitors to this exhibition of the carefully reconstructed London studio of Francis Bacon, the celebrated Dublin-born artist and one of the great painters of the last century. After Bacon’s death in 1992, his heir donated the studio to the Hugh Lane Gallery , a collection of modern and contemporary art, with each object meticulously surveyed, mapped and moved — including the walls, doors, floor, ceiling and even dust. Now visitors can also listen to Bacon describe his own works on earphones in an adjoining room. It’s just one of a number of notable exhibitions in this free gallery on Parnell Square on the city’s north side.

Three seated musicians perform inside a sunlit room — two are playing flutes, the other is playing an accordion.

The Cobblestone

A short walk away, sidle up to the bar with a pint of Guinness (€5.80) and tap your foot to the free-flowing tunes of tin whistles and fiddle music at the Cobblestone , a north Dublin institution. The understated pub’s laid-back vibe and the musicians who play here every day of the week, by the pub’s front window, make this place special. It’s also a testament to the power of local action: The building was saved from redevelopment after a tireless campaign to prevent it from being swallowed up by yet another hotel. Stay in this decidedly cool Stoneybatter area for dinner. Nearby, Grano serves housemade pastas, like the lemony scialatielli with Connemara clams (€24.50) or the simple spaghettoni with seasonal tomatoes (€18).

A person takes a photo of a large public water feature that is in the shape of a cross.

The Garden of Remembrance, dedicated to the memory of “all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom,” opened on Parnell Square on the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.

A top-down view of a white plate with a piece of toast that is topped with eggs, sauteed greens and what appears to be a red chile sauce.

At the Fumbally , a beloved and buzzy haunt in the Dublin 8 district, locally grown ingredients take center stage not only on the cafe’s menu, but also in its farm shop, added in 2020. Focaccia and sourdough loaves fill the counters and produce is arranged under handwritten signs that detail the origins at nearby family-run farms. The Fumbally eggs with fermented hot sauce on fresh sourdough (€12) are a must, and coffee (€4 to €6) comes from Dublin specialty roasters like 3fe , Farmhand and more.

People stand in a library's walkway between rows of dark-wood shelves that contain very old-looking books. A large, gold-framed portrait hangs above a doorway.

Marsh’s Library

Behind a wrought-iron gate near St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Marsh’s Library is an oasis of quiet. The working library looks much as it did when it opened in 1707; the books in the first gallery have even been kept in the same order on the shelves from that time. Listen to a quick history from a guide before meandering through, with the smell of leather bindings and aging paper wafting from packed shelves. Three metal cages at the end of one room are where 18th-century librarians locked readers in to prevent theft. While the enchanting library is less known than the one at Trinity College Dublin, whose picturesque Long Room hosts over a million visitors a year (and will close temporarily in late 2025 for renovation ), it offers an alternative glimpse into the past, with fewer crowds, for €7.

A short walk away, Christ Church Cathedral rises over the River Liffey on a sloping hillside — its grand stone structure replacing an earlier 11th-century wooden Viking church. Admire the carved limestone enclosed footbridge that was added during a major Victorian reconstruction before heading inside to hear the tales of kings, crusaders and modern-day thieves (€10 entry, but worth the extra €5 for an expertly guided tour). When you make your way underground, into the cool stone surrounds of the medieval crypt, the history of a church that has stood for nearly 1,000 years really comes to life, with rare manuscripts and religious artifacts.

A circle of tall, humanoid sculptures in a paved square across from a stone building.

The Proclamation Sculpture, opposite Kilmainham Gaol

Nowhere does Ireland’s struggle for independence come more fully into focus than at Kilmainham Gaol , where the organizers of the 1916 Easter Rising spent their final days. Walk the jail’s limestone halls where rebels from that insurrection were imprisoned alongside others arrested during previous uprisings against British rule. A group of volunteers rescued the jail from near ruin in the 1960s and restored it. (Movie buffs may recognize parts of the prison from “The Italian Job," and, delightfully, “Paddington 2,” which were both filmed here.) After an hourlong tour of the jail (€8 and the only way to visit, book well in advance), explore the adjoining museum packed with details of the uprising, the change in public support after the execution of rebels and the subsequent War of Independence and Civil War.

A display of liquor bottles, each in their own rectangular shelf and illuminated from behind.

New and old Dublin fuse in the Liberties, a lively neighborhood once home to one of the world’s largest whiskey distilleries (run by the Roe family) and its biggest brewery, still operating, owned by Guinness. Now a handful of new distilleries are driving a whiskey renaissance near the stalwart brewery. Visit one of the newest additions Roe & Co. — its name an homage to that earlier distillery — to take an hourlong whiskey blending tour (€30) and learn more about uisce beatha, Irish for whiskey and which literally translates as “the water of life.” Then, staying in the neighborhood, grab a quick toastie (€6.95) at Griolladh (it means grilled in Irish), and wander down nearby Meath Street, a time capsule of an earlier Dublin where old-school market stalls have served generations.

People sit outside a pub on chairs that spill out onto the street.

Grogan’s Castle Lounge

The cluster of lively, narrow streets between Grafton Street and South Great George’s Street, now known by some as the city’s creative quarter, blossomed after becoming partly pedestrianized since the coronavirus lockdowns, making it easier to stroll its specialty cafes, restaurants and shops. Stop by the Irish Design Shop on Drury Street for prints, jewelry and pottery from some of the country’s best creators. Independent and thoughtfully curated homeware store Industry and Co. , which features many Dublin-based makers, is just next door, and George’s Street Arcade gives you lots of nearby shopping options. Then snag a coveted seat outside Grogan’s Castle Lounge for a creamy pint of Guinness (€6.70) and some excellent people-watching. Afterward, wander the leafy paths of St. Stephen’s Green , an idyllic Victorian park nearby.

A display of various steak knives, each with a different handle.

The best of modern, seasonal Irish cuisine is on display at Mae Restaurant , the brainchild of the chef Grainne O’Keefe, tucked above the French Paradox wine shop in the leafy Ballsbridge neighborhood. The thoughtful service, with chefs popping over to explain the dishes, sets it apart. You also get to choose your own bespoke steak knife, crafted by different artisanal Irish makers, to use from the restaurant’s collection — you might try it out on the slow-braised beef rib. Set menu €75, with an optional wine pairing from its robust selection starting at €45. If you would rather stick closer to the city center, try Note , a bistro on Fenian Street with Connemara oysters (€4 each) and a crab crumpet (€22), or Bar Pez with delicious tapas like ricotta toast (€8).

A stone staircase leading down to the sea on a sunny day. People are swimming in the blue water.

The Forty Foot in Sandycove, a famed public bathing pool where generations of hearty Dubliners swim year round.

A row of treats that appear as bakery-made Pop Tarts. They are frosted with colorful sprinkles.

The pastries and artisanal bread at Bread 41 , an organic bakery on Pearse Street, have patrons flocking from all over town. Try the roulé aux pommes (a spiral-shaped apple pastry), morning bun or a housemade Pop-Tart (all around €4). The 3fe coffee is roasted just up the road (€2.90 for an Americano). The cafe is one of a growing number that doesn’t use disposable take-away cups to cut down on waste, so bring your own or fork over €5 for a deposit on a reusable cup. (Bring it back on your return journey to get your money back.) With coffee and pastry in hand, take the short walk to the Tara Street station and hop onto the DART, Dublin’s regional train, and take the 35-minute trip to the Sandycove and Glasthule station.

Climb down the slippery steps, guided by a royal blue handrail, to the bracingly cold Irish Sea at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, a famed public bathing pool where generations of hearty Dubliners swim year round. It's a great way to clear away the cobwebs. Many swear by the invigorating benefits of plunging into the chilly waters in all seasons, but others wait for the rare summer sunshine to take a dip. To warm your bones, head to the sauna at the nearby Store & Yard (€10 for 30 minutes) or walk the coast to Bibi’s Cafe for a hot drink. If cold water isn’t your thing, the seaside promenade on the southern edge of Dublin Bay offers magical views over the turquoise waters.

A museum display of pictures and aged documents, including a postcard.

James Joyce Tower and Museum

A Martello tower — one of a series of defensive forts that were built across the former British empire — overlooks the popular swim spot. The tower was immortalized in the opening scene of James Joyce’s “Ulysses,” the modernist novel that follows a day in the life of Leopold Bloom, as was the Forty Foot. So there’s no better place to delve into the Dublin literary legend’s work. The site is now the James Joyce Tower and Museum (free entry) and a pilgrimage point for Joyce enthusiasts — especially on June 16, the day the novel was set, that has become known as Bloomsday. The museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of the writer, housing his letters, photographs and a rare first-edition copy of “Ulysses.” One room upstairs in the sandy-colored stone fortress attempts to recreate the living conditions that Joyce experienced during his brief six-day stay here in 1904.

An earlier version of this article misstated the year that the Long Room at Trinity College Dublin will close temporarily for renovation. It is 2025, not 2024.

An earlier version of this story included a recommendation to visit the Hugh Lane Gallery at 5 p.m. on a Friday. Because the gallery closes at 5 p.m. on Fridays, the suggested time to visit has been changed to 4 p.m.

Swifties Blast Julia Roberts For Handsy Interaction With Travis Kelce In Dublin, Ireland

ireland whiskey tours

Between the social media platforms this video is circulating on, we have some very different vibes on the interaction.

Taylor Swift is in the thick of her European leg of the Eras Tour , and her NFL star, podcast co-host, and supportive boyfriend extraordinaire, Travis Kelce, has been in tow, attending many of the shows across the pond during his off-season. Although Swift has left the land of the free, many American celebrities are going to Europe to see Swift’s show.

During the most recent stop in Dublin, the Swifties are pulling out their claws to defend Swift and Kelce’s relationship, as Julia Roberts appears to be a little “handsy” during an interaction in the VIP tent.

📹 | Travis and Julia Roberts talking #DublinTSTheErasTour pic.twitter.com/a25rSME3uh — Taylor Swift News (@TSwiftNZ) June 30, 2024

The video went viral on both X and TikTok, warranting a very different range of reaction between the two platforms. Roberts is seen patting and rubbing on Kelce’s chest and forearms while in the VIP tent before the start of the show, fully decked out in her beaded bracelets. Swifties took to Travis’ defense on Twitter, noting that the interaction was completely inappropriate and that Roberts was making him uncomfortable.

“She is clearly jealous.”

“I feel bad for Travis :/ Clearly, he’s uncomfortable.”

“Wtf is wrong with JR? Why is she scratching his chest and pushing herself into him?? He is so uncomfortable trying to push her off, and she holds him up. This is uber strange.”

“Travis is taken, madam.”

“I think she’s drunk.”

On the other hand, TikTok Swifties are saying how sweet the interaction is and that Roberts is giving off “great aunt energy,” showing her excitement for the couple. After rewatching the video, viewers note that when reading her lips, Roberts is sharing words of congratulations toward the couple and how thrilled she is for both of them.

“Omg she’s like a mom .. telling her son how happy she is.”

“‘I’m just so happy for you guys.'”

“Julia is old enough to be Trav’s mom. She loves the Chiefs and Taylor. She is just telling him how much she loves them. It is cuteness!”

“Nah, I love it! It’s Julia Freaking Roberts! She can do no wrong!

“His crinkly smiling eyes. He just seems so happy.”

“Julia is just being an overly affectionate aunt. This is so cute.”

“Love this, freaking awesome.”

While I personally find it sweet that Roberts seems so thrilled to not only be at the show but also share her words of kindness with Kelce, the Swifties on X are coming for her throat. I guess the lesson learned here is just don’t touch Travis Kelce unless you want an army of Swifties railing against you on social media.

Then again… does Julia Roberts really care? Nah..

Taylor Swift has officially touched down in Ireland to kick off her sold-out Eras Tour concerts at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium tonight, tomorrow night, and Sunday.

Swift took to Instagram on Friday - not long before she took the stage at the Aviva - to share the sweet gesture she received from hometown heroes U2.

“Already feeling that Irish hospitality,” Swift captioned her story that showed the bouquet of flowers sent to her from Bono, Edge, Adam, and Larry.

“U2, thanks for always being the classiest and coolest,” Swift wrote, adding an Irish flag emoji.

Dubbing themselves as Swift’s “Irish fan club,” the U2 lads wrote: “Welcome back to our hometown … Leave some of it standing?!”

This weekend will be the fourth time Swift is headlining one of her tours in Ireland. She brought her Speak Now world tour to Belfast and Dublin in 2011, her 1989 world tour to Dublin in 2015, and her Reputation world tour to Dublin in 2018.

The Grammy winner has also spent a considerable amount of time in Ireland in a personal capacity, specifically in Co Donegal and Co Limerick . She's also visited Co Wicklow , which she references in her song "Sweet Nothing" from her 2022 album "Midnights."

Last week, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum revealed that Swift actually has Irish roots .

We take our whiskey seriously in Ireland. We break it out at celebrations and funerals, on cold winter nights and as a “cure” for any ailment you can imagine. But what makes this beloved spirit unique?

Simply put, Irish whiskey cannot be made anywhere else. Our  mild maritime climate impacts evaporation as the whiskey matures and interacts with the cask, creating a truly distinct beverage. And in order for the spirit to be sold as authentic Irish whiskey, it must have gone through the distilling and maturing process wholly in a distillery on the island of Ireland. Which brings us to those distilleries.

As John Callely of Whiskey Island puts it: “No two distilleries are the same. There are farm distilleries, there are island distilleries, there are distilleries in the middle of town and distilleries totally off the beaten track”. Each has its own approach to making Irish whiskey, he says, but what unites them is the knowledge and passion of the people who work there.

Jameson Distillery, County Cork

The field-to-glass process is a term you’ll hear a lot when it comes to whiskey distilleries, and the Jameson Distillery is no exception. Your tour guide will explain how ingredients are sourced and talk you through the distillation process as you let your senses take in the aroma of the whiskey-filled oak casks. Jameson Distillery is home to the world’s largest pot still, and the level of confidence in their whiskey is just as impressive. When your tour ends with a taste test – Jameson whiskey alongside two others – they’re in no doubt which one you’ll like best! Tours here range from the standard distillery experience to the Distiller’s Apprentice, which offers a behind the scenes look at the business of producing great whiskey.

whiskey-distillery-tours-bushmills-image1

Bushmills Distillery, County Antrim

It’s the world’s oldest licenced whiskey distillery (with records going back to 1608). It’s the oldest working distillery on the island of Ireland. And the Old Bushmills Distillery is also one of the few distilleries in the world to distil, blend and bottle its whiskey under the same roof. Bushmills produces whiskey that is firmly rooted in place – made with water drawn from the River Bush, which flows over the basalt rocks of the famous Causeway Coast . You can learn about the long history of this famous distillery as you take in either the Bushmills Distillery Tour or the premium Tour and Tasting.

whiskey-distillery-tours-hinch

Hinch Distillery, County Down

Hinch Distillery produces its fine range of triple distilled whiskeys on the beautiful Killaney Estate near the Mourne Mountains . But for visitors, what’s even more impressive is the purpose-built distillery building that allows you access to every aspect of the distillation process. Follow your tour guide through the ingredients room, into the mash house, the still house (the copper pot stills are named after local mountains; Donard, Croob and Wee Binnian) and the spectrum room, before finishing your tour in the bespoke tasting area where you get to sample some superb whiskey.

whiskey-distillery-tours-teeling-image1

Teeling Whiskey Distillery, County Dublin

Teeling Distillery is where whiskey spirit meets family spirit. The first Teeling Distillery was set up in 1782 and the craft has been passed down through the generations. Jack and Stephen Teeling opened this new award-winning Teeling Distillery in 2015 just down the road from the original distillery site in The Liberties . Jack even named the pot stills after his three daughters, and you can spot them during your interactive distillery tour. If you’re looking for something really special, try the Bottle Your Own experience – yes, you’ve guessed it. You get to fill a bottle of Teeling Whiskey directly from the cask as a memento of your visit.

Another family affair, Micil Distillery was named in honour of this whiskey-crafting family’s great great great grandfather Micil Mac Chearra. Six generations and 170 years later, they’re still distilling spirits using family recipes, craft, knowledge and time-honoured techniques. Micil started his whiskey journey on the Connemara hillside, but in 2016 Micil Distillery became the first legal distillery in Galway in over 100 years. The distillery offers a range of tours, from the whiskey experience to the cocktail masterclass and also offers private tours.

This distillery on the grounds of the magnificent Powerscourt Estate is home to Fercullen Irish whiskey and is a delightful blend of old and new. Pass through the old stone entrance building and you’ll find yourself in the ultra-modern distillery where the serious business of whiskey distilling takes place. But for all the contemporary sheen, the team here still relies on tried and tested traditional methods. Tours will take you through the distillation process and end with a whiskey tasting. A great option for foodies is the tour and food-paired whiskey tasting. Not only do you get to sample the spirits, but you also have the chance to taste some of the local artisan products such as farmhouse cheeses and charcuterie.

whiskey-distillery-tours-echlinville-image1

Echlinville Distillery, County Down

Nestled in the drumlins of Ireland's northeast, the Echlinville Distillery has made its mark as the producer of the award-winning Dunville’s Irish Whiskey. This is a true field-to-glass distillery. The owners have farmed this land for generations and grow their own barley, which is malted and used to create their range of spirits. The distillery will bring you along on this journey with a selection of tours ranging from the Tour and Tipple experience to food pairing tours to private and group tours.

8. Waterford Distillery , County Waterford

In Waterford city , on the banks of the River Suir, you’ll find the Waterford Distillery – the world’s largest producer of organic and biodynamic whiskies. It’s all about terroir here – a term that encompasses the mysterious interactions of plant, soil, site and microclimate. This is what controls the flavour of the barley and it’s why this distillery has developed sophisticated technology to distil its whiskey using the finest grain from over 40 farms in Ireland’s south east. Take the Terroir Tour and all will be revealed.

whiskey-distillery-tours-tullamore-image-1

Tullamore D.E.W. Distillery, County Offaly

Tullamore Distillery has been distilling Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey – named after stable boy turned distillery owner Daniel E. Williams – since 1829 and they’re pretty good at it. You’ll discover this as you sip your welcome Irish coffee at the start of the distillery tour. Listen as your guide talks you through the distillation to maturation process and introduces you to the people behind the scenes in this state-of-the-art distillery. And when you get to the taste test – you can taste whiskey straight from one of their casks – you’ll have no doubt at all.

whiskey-distillery-tours-shortcross-image1

Rademon Estate Distillery, County Down

History is everywhere on the Rademon Estate, from the original estate house which dates back to 1667 to the 19th century stone obelisk that dominates the skyline. But the distillery in which Shortcross Irish whiskey is created is strikingly modern. Pick from a range of tours (Rademon is also well-known for its craft gin) and enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of a working distillery. The tasting at the end is a bonus!

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour - Dublin, Ireland

Stevie Nicks Appeared To Cry During Taylor Swift’s ‘You’re On Your Own, Kid’ Performance At ‘The Eras Tour’ In Dublin

Megan Armstrong

Taylor Swift’s ongoing The Eras Tour attracted an overwhelming number of A-list celebrities in London, but Swift’s The Eras Tour VIP tent has consistently been occupied by special somebodies. It was Dublin, Ireland’s turn over the weekend, and Stevie Nicks attended on Sunday, June 30.

Swift dedicated the live debut of “Clara Bow,” her The Tortured Poets Department closer, to Nicks, whom she called “a hero of mine” in a fan-taken TikTok . There is clearly mutual admiration between the two legendary singer-songwriters, as Nicks appeared to cry during Swift’s “You’re On Your Own, Kid” performance.

stevie nicks was crying to yoyok!! she previously revealed that this song helped her grieve her friend christine mcvie pic.twitter.com/47wyxGZ4Bz — Taylor Throwbacks (@ThrowbackTaylor) July 1, 2024

Fans filmed Nicks appearing to wipe away tears during the Midnights track. “Clara Bow” and “You’re On Your Own, Kid” were Swift’s surprise songs.

Nicks could have just been emotional from Swift’s sincere shout-out. However, last year, Nicks named “You’re On Your Own, Kid” as the song that captured “the sadness of how I feel ” after Christine McVie’s November 2022 death .

“As long as Chris was even on the other side of the world — we didn’t have to talk on the phone,” Nicks told an Atlanta concert crowd in May 2023 . We really weren’t phone buddies. […] And then, we’d go back to Fleetwood Mac, and we’d walk in, and it would just be like, ‘Hey, little sister, how are you?’ It was like never a minute had passed. Never an argument in our entire 47 years. Never. So, when it was the two of us, the two of us were on our own, kids. We always were. And now, I’m having to learn to be on my own, kid, by myself.”

Swift’s final Dublin concert also saw Travis Kelce , her boyfriend of nearly one year, surprise Swift, as captured by fans. Julia Roberts might have been just as excited as Swift to see the Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end.
