Garth Brooks

There’s a reason that Garth Brooks won entertainer of the year a record-setting seven times at the CMA Awards. It’s because he simply has few equals when it comes to live performance.

Brooks proved that again Thursday night (May 18) at the opening night of his Garth Brooks/Plus ONE residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The 2 1/2-hour performance spanned 33 songs and combined the best of his previous one-man show at The Wynn — which ended in 2014 after running for five years — and the full-band, three-year stadium tour that he completed last year that drew more than three million people.

Brooks started off solo backing himself on acoustic guitar, under the guise of saying he needed to sound check how the room sounded full of people. He opened with Bob Seger ‘s “Against the Wind,” which he sang partially a cappella. While it’s understandable to focus on his overall talents as an engaging entertainer and his almost supernatural ability to connect with his audience, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that his voice is a supple and powerful one, which he proved over and over throughout the night. He followed with “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” from Keith Whitley, one of his other musical heroes, and his own 1995 hit, “She’s Every Woman,” before bringing on his 11-piece band for a muscular, full-bodied “Rodeo.”

For the rest of the evening, he nimbly toggled back and forth between solo and band performances in what seemed to be a spontaneous set list. While his band was in fine form throughout, they especially shone on a particularly menacing “The Thunder Rolls.” His permanent Plus One, wife Trisha Yearwood , also joined him for four songs, showing off her peerless vocals throughout, but especially on A Star Is Born ‘s “Shallow.”

Unlike the Wynn show where he narrated a version of his life from the perspective of his youth with a sense of awe of the musical marks his early influences had left on him, this time when he referenced George Strait , James Taylor and Seger, it was as often as a peer. That includes a moving segment where he recounted how stunning it was for him to hear his holy trio sing his own songs back to him when he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. It also proved a clever device to perform three of his biggest hits: “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old),” “The River” and “That Summer.”

Audience members had to lock up their phones upon entry, which meant no photos, no video, and, certainly, no recording. The simple move kept everyone in the moment, but also allowed Brooks to debut a dark new ballad about finding pleasure in the pain, without worrying it would show up online within minutes.

But the moments of darkness were few (and also included a stripped-down, emotional version of “Wolves” from 1990’s No Fences ) because, as Brooks has said for decades, there is no one having more fun at his shows than him. His exuberance at being back on stage, embraced by adoring fans who gave him a long standing ovation simply for walking out before he sang a note, was palpable at every turn. And it fans didn’t get it from the non-stop, ear-to-ear grin on his face, they certainly got it when he teared up singing “The Dance,” as he looked appreciatively out over the audience. Brooks joked earlier in the day that tonight would be the worst of the 27 shows in his 2023 residency; on Friday morning (May 19), he added an additional 18 shows for 2024 that go on sale later this month. If that is the case, fans attending upcoming concerts have got plenty to look forward to as opening night will be hard to beat.

Garth Brooks is currently in the middle of his monumental run of shows at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, as part of his multi-year Las Vegas residency, which will last well into 2024 .

With a plethora of appearances at the iconic venue lined up throughout the rest of the year and beyond, potential attendees are keeping a close eye on which songs he's been performing in Sin City.

With Garth being the blockbuster entertainer that he is, he's so far been delivering a blend of crowd-pleasing covers and fan-favourite staples from across his stellar discography.

The Oklahoma native has been performing the likes of ‘Rodeo’, ‘Two Piña Coladas’, ‘Learning to Live Again’ and ‘The Dance’. Garth Brooks’ nostalgic, storytelling gem, ‘That Summer’, has also made the cut, along with his legendary good-time anthem, ‘Friends in Low Places’, which has been serving as his triumphant set closer.

Somewhat surprisingly, Garth Brooks has not been regularly performing his much-loved ballad, ‘If Tomorrow Never Comes’, which remains one of the many highlights in his unrivalled repertoire. Ticket-holders will undoubtedly be hoping he introduces this heartwarming hit single into his setlist sooner rather than later.

Some of the covers that have made their way into Garth's 2023 setlists so far include George Jones and Tammy Wynette's ‘Golden Ring’, Bob Seger's ‘Turn the Page’ and Bill Withers’ ‘Ain't No Sunshine’.

Endearingly, Garth's fellow country star and wife, Trisha Yearwood, has been joining him each night to perform a number of songs, including their celebrated duet, ‘Whiskey to Wine’, and their cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's ‘Shallow’.

It's worth underlining that, regardless of which songs Garth Brooks chooses to perform on the night, you can depend on the best-selling artist of all time to put on a spectacular, hit-filled show that'll stay with you for many years to come.

Garth Brooks Biography

The fastest selling solo artist in music history, Garth Brooks has sold in excess of 100 million albums in just 10 years, now topping 117 million. Garth Brooks tour dates are the hottest concerts on record and his body of work propelled country music as a genre to the front pages of newspapers worldwide and the covers of magazines, to the point where Forbes declared on its cover, “Country Conquers Rock.” and featured Garth in a major music piece. And, he accomplished it without ever releasing a song to pop radio. The key to his record-setting success lies within the personality and talent of Garth Brooks. It has been said that through the 1990s, Garth’s only real competition was himself. He brought daring individualism and a love of music, ranging from working class blues and honky tonk to bluegrass and arena rock, to the musical table. And he had the talent to serve it up with class. His easy-going, approachable charisma was matched only by his fearless willingness to take chances and step outside the lines. He has had an unprecedented run so far and opened the doors for many more country artists to follow.

His self-effacing demeanor is an unusual trait for a big star. As quiet and low-key as Brooks appears to be off stage, he is the complete opposite once the curtains go up and he hears his fans cheering. He’s known for flying above the crowd on a wire while singing his countless hits. Garth Brooks is the biggest selling solo artist of all-time with album sales approaching 100 million units worldwide. Had he sold all his albums in the United States it would mean that roughly 1 in 3 Americans would have one of Garth’s albums! In fact, the only ones to have sold more albums than Garth are the Beatles, but they have a 20-year head start on Mr. Brooks so he may catch up to them yet.

After the release of Scarecrow, Brooks eased into retirement, spending the next few years quietly and not resurfacing in the public eye until he had a busy 2006. Toward the end of that year, he married country singer Trisha Yearwood on December 10, but prior to that, he struck a deal with Wal-Mart to become the exclusive retailer for his back catalog. The first release under this deal was a new box set called The Limited Series that collected all the albums he released after his first box set called The Limited Series. Garth Brooks photo courtesy of garthbrooks.com This second Limited Series was released in time for the holiday season of 2005 and also included a new disc of outtakes called The Lost Sessions which was later released as an individual disc in 2006. The Lost Sessions featured a duet with Yearwood called “Love Will Always Win,” which climbed to 23 on the country charts in ‘06, a modest placing that was nevertheless his biggest hit since “Wrapped Up In You.”

Retirement for Brooks seems to just mean “take it at a normal star’s pace”. He spends more time with family now, but still managed to get involved in screenwriting, new album releases, and televised concert specials.

Garth Brooks surprise releases ‘777 Jackpot’ box set

The new package is available at his Las Vegas residency

Garth Brooks is commemorating the final year of his Garth Brooks/Plus One Caesars Palace Las Vegas residency with a new box set. Fans attending the shows this weekend were surprised to see a new Vegas-themed package in The Colosseum Shop that was released without fanfare.

Garth Brooks 777 Jackpot contains 77 songs across seven CDs with a custom 88-page book full of photos from his Garth Brooks Plus One two-year run. The set features four CDs of Brooks performing hit influential songs with a fifth disc called Live Covers.  The sixth disc is called  Garth featuring 18 of his biggest hits with the final entitled Together containing duets.

Fans can also order via Ticketmaster’s website for $40 all-inclusive shipping and taxes. It’s unclear when the boxes will ship but they are available throughout Caesars properties in Las Vegas.

Garth has described this second Vegas boxed set as more of a “covers” box that contains a “collaboration record,” not to be confused with the promised duets record because the duets record is still on the way!

“When you think about Vegas, you think about getting lucky, nothin’ is better than 777 ! This boxed set has stuff you can’t get anywhere else,” states Brooks. “When you think about the Stadium Tour, when you think about the Comeback Tour, the Dive Bar, the One-Man show, the show at Caesars Palace has them all!”

We were unable to get our hands on a complete track listing as of this writing, but it appears 14 songs have been previously unavailable before, including a duet with Ronnie Dunn on “The Beaches of Cheyenne” and “The Call,” a duet Brooks debuted with wife Trisha Yearwood during his One Man Show residency at the Wynn Las Vegas in 2013. “The Call” was included on the DVD included in the Blame It All On My Roots box released the same year through Walmart, but hasn’t been available in audio-only form.

Other unreleased tracks include a cover of Don McLean’s “Vincent,” Marty Robbins’ “Big Iron,” Randy Travis’ “I Told You So,” Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect,” Bob Seger’s “Main Street,” Nickelback’s “Rockstar,” George Strait’s “Troubadour,” and Johnny Horton’s “Honky Tonk Man.” Newly released live covers include James Taylor’s “How Sweet It Is,” Seger’s “Night Moves,” Billy Joel’s “You May Be Right,” and the long version of “In Another’s Eyes” with an extended standing ovation for Yearwood, according to pictures obtained via the Garth Brooks Believers Facebook group.

In 2022, Brooks released the first of two planned boxes for the residency. Live Live contains a 92-page custom book with live photos and five discs filled with over 50 of Brooks’ most beloved live recordings with newly released recordings. The set includes the final release of his celebrated Double Live album, with one of three randomly packaged collector’s covers–the 25th Anniversary Edition of Central Park, the 25th Anniversary Edition of Croke Park, or the never-before-released 1989 Edition. Live Live also contains Triple Live , featuring over 25 tracks from the record-breaking comeback tour and the Stadium Tour, including new, never-released recordings and one of three new, randomly packaged collector’s covers from the Stadium Tour.

Garth Brooks/Plus One gives fans the opportunity to see Garth up close and personal on The Colosseum stage. No two shows will be the same. With varying instrumentation–whether it be one fiddle, percussion and background vocals, or the whole band–and the occasional special guest, Garth and his audience will share a once-in-a-lifetime experience each night.

The residency is scheduled through December 2024 .

Country Music Fans Are "So Confused" After Garth Brooks-Led Festival Is Suddenly Cancelled

L abor Day was set to be epic for country music fans, who were going to be treated to an all-new music festival in Panama City Beach, Florida. Kickoff Jam was scheduled for August 31-September 1, and the list of performers was not-to-be missed. Unfortunately, the event's organizers have pulled the plug just two months before the festival.

The Kickoff Jam lineup included Garth Brooks , Carrie Underwood , Alabama, Randy Travis, Lauren Alaina, Randy Houser, and more. Some fans online complained about the high ticket prices (which ranged from $300 to $2,200 for the weekend event), but, as of May 4, the general admission tickets were sold out .

On June 8, the festival's official Instagram account reported the news: "Kickoff Jam, the multi-artist country music festival originally scheduled for August 30 - September 1, 2024 at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach, Florida has been canceled. After the success of Gulf Coast Jam this past weekend in Panama City Beach, we realized the weekend after Memorial Day is a much better time to host a festival. So, we are going to cancel Kickoff Jam and provide refunds."

The event's organizers did not give any additional details and comments have been turned off on their Instagram and Facebook accounts, but a post on Facebook says, "Refunds have begun processing and already started being received back to the original payment method. All purchasers should have their refund within 7-10 business days from the announcement. Expect your refund by 6/21/24."

The vague explanation has left fans scratching their heads. They headed to social media to leave their thoughts:

  • "I don't understand how them finding a better time for GCJ affects kickoff jam, or why they didn't just reschedule it for a non holiday weekend"
  • "But what’s the REAL reason?"
  • "But I wanted Garth Brooks 😭😭😭"
  • "I knew Garth Brooks and Carrie Underwood were too good to be true!"
  • "That story makes zero sense."
  • "I'm so confused"
  • "This is all the way suspect."
