Hikers will enjoy the vast array of trails available throughout this national forest. In the winter, some of these trails are transformed into cross-country skiing routes, adding a unique twist to the trek. There are also small lakes and rivers which provide sailing and swimming opportunities – fishing rods can be hired on-site.

If you plan on spending the whole day there, you will find some great picnic spots and modern facilities to make your visit very comfortable and enriching.

Akron is an interesting – but at times overlooked – city in Northern Ohio. It steeped in American industrial history – from the decades-long boom to the modern decline.

There are plenty of museums and art exhibits that detail the impact industry has had on the region and on the inhabitants of the city. The Rubber Museum investigates the American rubber industry; it is a surprisingly interesting museum for such a specific topic.

The emerging cultural scene adds an exciting twist to any visit and we highly recommend you check out one of the theatre performances while you are in town.

13. Cleveland

Located on Ohio’s Erie coast, Cleveland is a culturally diverse and experience-rich day trip option that can easily be visited within a few hours from Erie.

The Rock ‘n Roll Museum is based in Cleveland, detailing the history of the music genre which emerged from the United States in the 1950’s.

There are plenty of other museums scattered throughout the town that are worth visiting, as well as some minor theme parks that are excellent if you are visiting with kids or teens. The region also has the most golf courses per capita in the United States – great for major golf fans.

14. Lake Erie Beach

Lake Erie Beach is a quaint town on the New York coast of Lake Erie that has some interesting coastal attractions. The crystal-clear blue waters are reminiscent of the Caribbean or South Pacific, while the cool, brisk breeze will bring you right back to the Northeastern US.

There are great views over the bluffs from the beach, and in the town itself, there are many buildings with a distinctive, worn-yet-chic feel. The restaurants and bars recreate the vibe of seaside towns. This is one of the best coastal experiences you will get while still technically inland.

15. Pymatuning State Park

Located nearby on the border between Pennsylvania and Ohio, Pymatuning is a state park that is packed with great options allowing you to get close to nature – especially if you are visiting with kids.

Pymatuning Deer Park is located within the area and has seen some major improvements over the last few years. Here, kids and adults alike can get up close and personal with native North American deer and learn more about their habitats and activities. The most iconic waterfall, Ohiopyle Falls , can be found in the center of the park with multiple. You can admire the 20-foot drop from easily accessible vantage points, including the observation deck, the visitors center, the Ferncliff Trail , and the Ferncliff overlook.

The EMTA, better known as the “e”, can get you where you need to go — whether that’s to work, school, around or across town.

In order to provide reliable service to as many as possible in Erie County, these fixed routes operate an average of over 20 hours and over 5,500 miles each day, Monday through Saturday.

The “e” runs every day except on the following holidays:

• New Year’s Day
• Easter Sunday
• Memorial Day
• Fourth of July
• Thanksgiving

Buses are also handicapped accessible. Each bus has a built-in ramp that lowers to allow those in wheelchairs to board easily. Once on board, there are positions available to secure the wheelchair.

Bike on the Bus Program

“Bike on the Bus Program” makes it easy for you to transport your bicycle while riding the “e.“ Bike racks are available throughout the entire year. Passengers are responsible for loading and unloading bikes. Riders use the racks at their own risks. An adult must assist children younger than age 12 with loading and unloading their bikes.

Senior Citizen Route (Fixed Route)

Seniors 65 and older who are interested in riding the “e” are recommended by the EMTA to sign up for the Senior Identification card. Showing this card allows you to ride any EMTA bus for FREE. Applications can be mailed to your home or can be filled out at any of the EMTA offices. To receive an ID card, applicants must show proof that they are age 65 or older.

The following are the acceptable proof of age documents:

• Valid Driver’s License
• Birth Certificate
• Armed Forces Discharge or Separation Papers
• Passport or Naturalization Papers
• Statement of Age Verification (issued by Soc. Sec. Office)
• Baptismal certificate
• PennDot non-drivers license
• Veteran’s Universal Access Card
• Resident Alien Card

Customers with Disabilities

Customers with a disability qualify for the Reduced Fare Program. To qualify for this program, you must complete the Reduced Fare Application. In order to prove a disability, you must show a valid Medicare card when applying in person at the EMTA offices or have a qualifying agency complete Part B of the Reduced Fare Program application. Once eligible, customers will receive a ‘Reduced Fare’ pass. This must be presented to the EMTA Operator to receive the reduced rates of 80¢ for a one-way fare and 25¢ for a transfer. EMTA offers the following assistance for our customers with mobility limitations:

• EMTA will transport all wheelchairs regardless of size or weight as long as the ramp/lift and the vehicle can physically accommodate them.
• EMTA will transport customers who use respirators, concentrators, or portable oxygen.
• EMTA will permit guide dogs or other service animals to accompany a customer on their bus.
• Our buses are equipped with a kneeling feature for easier access. If you want the bus to kneel, please ask the operator.
• Our buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps. The driver can assist you in boarding or leaving the bus. If you want the ramp deployed, please ask the operator.
• Our bus operators will request that customers sitting in priority seating or in a flip-up seat over the securement area vacate these seats when a person with a disability needs to use them.
• Our bus operators will allow time for persons with disabilities to board/disembark a vehicle and can assist customers in doing so.
• EMTA will provide materials in large print, braille, and/or audio.
