Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

30+ Essential Resources for LGBTQ Travelers

An large LGBTQ Pride celebration

Back again this month is our LGBTQ+ column leader Adam from travelsofadam.com  who is talking about the best websites, apps, and blogs for LGBTQ travelers.

Today, modern lesbian, gay, bi, and trans travelers no longer need a print guidebook to find underground, gay-friendly places. We don’t have to walk around with colored bandanas to send secret signals when cruising. Why? Because now — more often than not — we’re out in the open.

The basic LGBTQ trip now starts like any other planned holiday. Where do we go? What do we want to do and see? How do we save money? Thanks to increased acceptance over the years, we’re far more out in the open and, with that comes a lot more options — both online and off — to plan your trip and find LGBTQ friendly attractions, businesses, tours, and ways to meet people.

While we don’t have to let our sexuality define our travels, if you’re looking for activities and people who share a similar lifestyle, these are the best tools on the web:

Where to Find LGBTQ Travel Inspiration & Things to Do

A couple planning a trip together

The most popular gay and lesbian travel bloggers (myself included) generally publish destination guides — it’s just a matter of finding the one that fits your own personal travel style. Here are some of my favorites (starting with my own):

  • Travels of Adam
  • Globetrotter Girls
  • Dopes on the Road
  • Nomadic Boys
  • Only Once Today

For more blogs, check out my complete list !

Websites There are a handful of dedicated LGBTQ travel websites that publish detailed and up to date guides. My favorite are:

  • Out Traveler  – once a print magazine, still publishes and maintains up-to-date LGBTQ city guides on its website.
  • AfterEllen  – Regularly publishes lesbian travel guides.
  • TravelGay  – Provide comprehensive city guides for destinations around the world.

Travel Guidebooks The Damron series started out in 1964 for men but has also published a separate guidebook for lesbians for nearly 20 years. And Spartacus Publishing has a comprehensive digital guidebook as well as other resources.

Most mainstream guidebooks (such as Lonely Planet) also include information for LGBTQ travelers as well

Local Magazines, Newspapers, and Guides There are countless independent, LGBTQ-oriented city magazines and newspapers around the world . It doesn’t matter if you’re in Australia or England — you’re going to find a local LGBTQ print publication or guide. Some will include weekly listings of clubs, parties, and events; others might feature personal ads.

One of the best ways to find them in a new city is to simply go to the queer neighborhood and then look for them in a bookstore or bar — anyone who’s ever been inside a gay bar or club is probably familiar with the stack of magazines, brochures, or flyers in the doorway or by the bathrooms. (And make sure to support those businesses that carry these publications!)

Also check out the pamphlets, flyers, and advertisements on the corkboard in the local LGBTQ center.

Some examples:

  • Siegessäule , Berlin’s free gay magazine, likes to claim one of the highest readerships and circulations of any print media in Germany.
  • Windy City Times still prints an LGBTQ newspaper for Chicago.
  • Washington Blade operates in DC.
  • Seattle Gay News covers Seattle.

Company Blogs Even the biggest gay apps have started to push out content through their channels. Hornet acquired the one-time popular gossip blog Unicorn Booty several years ago and now publishes gay men’s travel guides for assorted cities (even if they’re slightly basic).

Each of the other hookup apps, including the more niche ones, like Surge  and Planet Romeo , maintain regularly published blogs, sometimes featuring travel tips and local insider guides.

Scruff probably has gone the furthest in incorporating travel tips into its app with the feature Scruff Venture , which allows users to search a destination for other visitors, local ambassadors, and events.

IGLTA The International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association is the leader when it comes to LGBTQ tourism. Its members include hundreds of airlines, hotels, destination tourism offices, and independent tour operators, both LGBTQ-owned and mainstream.

On its website, you’ll find a useful “Plan Your Trip” feature that searches through its members (just be mindful that these are members who have paid for their placement). It’s a great place to find LGBTQ-specific things to do on your trip.

LGBTQ-friendly Accommodation Often the most challenging part of gay travel can be finding an LGBTQ-friendly hotel or accommodation. Some of the biggest hotel chains and brands have actively supported the LGBTQ community by participating in Pride events around the world, by training all their staff (from the front desk to the reservations center) in diversity and inclusiveness issues, and by running LGBTQ-inclusive campaigns.

There are gay-specific accommodation websites such as Rainbow World Hotels , Purple Roofs , and MisterBNB , but you’ll almost always find the same listings on mainstream sites for far cheaper prices.

You’re paying a premium when trying to book through a gay-specific website, and in most instances, the mainstream sites and listings are increasingly safe and comfortable for LGBTQ travelers.

How to Meet Other LGBTQ Travelers

Travelers hanging out on a beach together

Meeting strangers is one of the joys of traveling, and there’s nothing better than having an LGBTQ local to show you around. It will certainly make a trip more interesting, much more memorable. Here’s where to find them:

The Hookup Apps If there’s one thing that’s revolutionized our little gay world, it’s Grindr, the location-based hookup app for gay men. For better or worse (you either love it or hate it), Grindr has changed the way we find sex, love, or even friends and it’s also quite simply enabled a lot more connections. Grindr makes it easier to meet locals when you’re abroad, whether it’s for a romp in the bushes behind Berghain or an innocent coffee date. While sex does happen often enough through these apps, it doesn’t have to be the end goal or even your main objective to still find value in them. Here are the main useful apps:

Networking Groups For a long time, Couchsurfing was one of the best places to meet other LGBTQ travelers and locals. With a strong community, the bed-sharing and hosting network made it easy to connect with other travelers — and the “Queer Couchsurfers” group was one of the site’s most active and welcoming. There were plenty of times I used Couchsurfing not just for a place to sleep but also to attend local get-togethers.

On Meetup.com you’ll find most major destinations have LGBTQ/queer-themed groups and meetups, and these are often a great and safe way to meet other LGBTQ travelers in nonsexual encounters. Sometimes you’ll find them for very specific interests, whether it’s a group of gay science fiction fans in Berlin or LGBTQ professional networking in London.

StartOut , a nonprofit for professional business and entrepreneurship networking events in various American cities, is also worth checking out. Facebook, with its thousands of public groups, can also provide a great meeting point online — and then offline — through local city or regional networking groups. It’s just a matter of doing some research beforehand to find the right networking group for your trip.

A Note on Safety

As I’ve written before in this LGBTQ travel column, safety and comfort is an important part of any gaycation. Thankfully, there are more than enough resources online to help you decide what or where might be safer to travel. For a more independent look at the LGBTQ rights and safety situation, Equaldex is my favorite.

Unlike media and blogs, this is a crowd-sourced platform where users can post and share country-specific news articles related to LGBTQ rights. This can be especially helpful for those less-familiar places and to get a general comparison of LGBTQ inclusiveness around the world.

Over the years and thanks to new technologies and new formats for our media, the way we travel now has changed for the better. And for LGBTQ travelers specifically, these advancements have made it not just easier but also safer and friendlier. Using these tools and resources, so much more of the world is open to us.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.

Ready to Book Your Trip? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel. I list all the ones I use when I travel. They are the best in class and you can’t go wrong using them on your trip.

Ratings and Reviews

Great app all over.

This app is really great all over. For me a very good addition to a printed travel guide. It is also useful that you can save your searches and personalise the results in a list. This way you don't have to smudge a printed copy but can just save the highlights by one click. Very helpful that the app offers different languages.

Very good app

I think this app is really good. Has a lot of options and features and is still easy to use. Suggested highlights and tours, information on sights including photos, sometimes short videos available. I am completely satisfied.

Unfortunately they are more concerned with making money

To even use the app for more than clicking on it. You have to pay for Premium Content. The app has never worked for as long as I’ve had it (a couple of years). And when it updated recently I assumed they would have made it more functional in general. But nope, Still have to pay to see anything. And I can google the supposedly “free content “ faster than opening this app and getting around all the private paid content.

Developer Response ,

you can see some free content like events or the pride calendar.

The Most Important Resources for LGBTQ Travelers

As a queer travel writer, I’m constantly thinking about LGBTQ culture and tourism on an international scope. I’ve learned that whether it’s tracking down the best gay bars in Berlin or making sure it’s safe to hold hands while walking the streets of an unfamiliar city, the LGBTQ community’s travel planning needs aren’t always met by picking up a one-size-fits-all guidebook.

Thankfully, the internet is rife with travel advice that provides lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adventurers with the information needed to design the trip of a lifetime. From navigating foreign laws to booking a gay-friendly resort, this trusty list of travel resources has you covered.

LGBTQ-specific travel news and safety basics

U.S. State Department ✈ A section of this government-run online resource offers basic pointers for LGBTQ travelers such as travel document checklists, general safety tips, and information about travel insurance and various U.S. embassy locations.

Equaldex ✈ Launched in 2014, this interactive map-anchored website keeps a running tab on LGBTQ rights–related laws around the world via a global network of user contributions.

National Center for Transgender Equality ✈ This Washington, D.C.–based advocacy organization addresses information relevant to gender-nonconforming and transgender travelers. It features a particularly comprehensive guide to airport security that addresses concerns related to potentially intrusive TSA screening procedures.

OutRight Action International ✈ Formerly known as the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, this nonprofit publishes news, studies, and reports on LGBTQ issues around the world that can help travelers stay informed about safety in various destinations.

Erasing 76 Crimes ✈ Journalist and LGBTQ advocate Colin Stewart heads up this news-oriented blog that spotlights global developments related to LGBTQ rights spanning countries across the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas.

GoAbroad’s LGBTQ Study Abroad Guide ✈ For queer students interested in studying abroad, this PDF provides a wealth of information, including tips for coming out to a host family, LGBTQ-specific scholarships, and a list of queer-friendly study abroad programs.

Related 6 Dreamy Rental Services That Take Home-Sharing to the Next Level

LGBTQ-friendly accommodations and services

The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association ✈ This website acts as a one-stop-shop for all things related to LGBTQ travel planning. It brings together a massive network of queer-approved hotels, transportation providers, tourism boards, travel agencies, tour operators, event promoters, and local media in over 80 countries worldwide; it also maintains recommendation-based travel and business blogs.

Purple Roofs ✈ An LGBTQ mainstay since the late ’90s, this booking website showcases small, family-owned bed-and-breakfasts, hotels, vacation rentals, inns, and tour companies worldwide. It also hosts a variety of related travel resources, including event listings and a dedicated LGBTQ travel blog.

World Rainbow Hotels ✈ This modern travel directory combines a curated list of stylish, queer-friendly hotels in countries where attitudes toward gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans travelers are for the most part accepting. The website also features an image-driven blog full of travel inspiration, global news, events, and other articles.

Travel Gay and Travel Gay Asia ✈ These twin booking sites serve a predominantly gay male audience, pointing international travelers to city guides with relevant information about bars, clubs, saunas, shops, beaches, and events, as well as queer-friendly hotels across the globe.

GayCities ✈ A similarly gay male–focused online travel guide, this web resource recommends gay-friendly bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, shops, gyms, and more in 238 different cities from Cape Town to Mexico City .

In addition to explicitly LGBTQ outlets, you can now find pages dedicated to LGBTQ consumers on mainstream online travel booking sites like Expedia and Orbitz . Queer-oriented promotions and packages are also often offered by big-name hotels such as Marriott and Kimpton.

LGBTQ-specialized tour operators and agencies

Lgbtq-friendly tour operators for organized trips.

For LGBTQ travelers who’d rather leave trip planning to the experts, award-winning tour operators such as Outstanding Travel , Zoom Vacations , Out Adventures , Toto Tours , Detours Travel , and Concierge Travel all offer a diverse array of international group and private trips. International tour operator R Family Vacations also designs and leads LGBTQ family-friendly trips (plus a few new adults-only options) on land and at sea for public groups and individuals. The queer-run wilderness education organization, The Venture Out Project , operates LGBTQ-specific backpacking trips in the United States for teens, adults, and families.

LGBTQ-friendly cruises

Inclusive travel company Vacaya hosts curated LGBTQ getaways on chartered cruise ships, as well as to all-LGBTQ international resorts. The popular lesbian travel brand Olivia Cruises has been running entertainment-filled cruise, resort, adventure, and riverboat group trips exclusively for queer female–identified travelers since 1990. And cruise company Source Events , which caters predominantly to gay men and their families, organizes both all-gay charters and private LGBTQ groups aboard larger cruise ships (as well as personalized cruise journeys and on-land group itineraries).

LGBTQ-friendly travel and networking apps

From joining queer-specific networking groups , to checking for upcoming LGBTQ events in different cities, to starting important conversations about shared experiences through hashtags such as #travelingwhiletrans , LGBTQ travelers have long relied on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter when planning for domestic and international trips. More recently, meetup apps have created new opportunities for connection between LGBTQ travelers.

Apps (available on iOS and Android)

Meetup ✈ This stalwart community-building platform is a great tool for connecting with fellow LGBTQ folks and getting to know local queer scenes on the road. The “LGBTQ Meetups” section points app users toward various happy hours, professional networking events, book clubs, and hiking groups, as well as playgroups for LGBTQ parents.

SCRUFF Venture ✈ Gay dating app SCRUFF recently launched a travel-oriented edition aimed at making it easier to connect with LGBTQ people “before and while you travel.” By clicking into one of the app’s 500-plus destinations, users can view members marked as “visiting now” or “visiting soon” in each given location. The app also provides travel tips from city “Ambassadors” (members who volunteer to give advice and recommendations to visitors), plus updates about LGBTQ issue–related travel advisories.

Refuge Restrooms ✈ This important resource for trans, intersex, and gender-nonconforming individuals maps out safe restrooms in various countries around the world, which users can search for based on proximity to a location.

Also worth checking out is Connextions Magazine , which compiles long-form hotel reviews, human interest stories, destination guides, and other global lifestyle content relevant to LGBTQ travelers. (The print and digital publication also has a Spanish edition.)

Although not their main focus, many widely circulated LGBTQ lifestyle outlets like the Advocate , Curve , Autostraddle , Diva , and Chill also feature travel-related news, commentary, city guides, hotel reviews, profiles, and more.

Choosing Detours Travel was the best decision I have very made seriously, without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had!!!!! I have never traveled with a group of 16 Gay Men of various backgrounds, interests; to be very honest this was an "out of the box" moment for me which caused much anxiety going in. From the moment I arrived in Athens a day early I reached out via What's App to see who was in town, hooked up with 3 guys in a few hours and the adventure began. Our Leader Brandon who was in contact with us as soon as we began the adventure and continued to check on all the group several times either in person or on line, everyday this man is on top of everything! He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. That is it...... having a tough time..... without Detours & Brandon getting thru may days without their guidance Cheers to you all,

Detours Travel gave me the trip of a lifetime and one of the best weeks of my life in a castle in Italy! I booked this trip for the first time a little less than a year ago based on raving reviews from a friend of mine and Detours lived up to the reviews and then some. Every single detail gets thought through meticulously, leaving me to focus on nothing but relaxing and enjoying the sites. Optional lead tours are available at times, if you choose and each day has the perfect balance of planned activities that you can opt in or out of. I was able to pay for my trip in installments which made financial sense, and any time I had any issue or change needed, a quick email did the trick with no work needed on my end. Travel to and from the destinations are all planned ahead, and trip leaders are knowledgeable, friendly and create an inclusive environment to ensure everyone feels welcome and like friends. The masterminds behind the scenes go out of their way to make sure that this trip is unforgettable, I'm already planning my next one. Thanks Detours!

I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

My husband & I recently returned from the October 2023 Spain trip. We really loved our Detour Tours travel experience. Our trip was made up of 16 fellow travelers - 4 couples & 8 singles who were all personable and easy going. We had a wonderful Tour Leader, Scott, who was very knowledgeable, experienced, approachable and looked out for all of us.  He went out of his way to be inclusive and was a great source of information on the local sites and activities.  Detours arranged the hotel accommodations, the airport transfers, and the travel between the 4 amazing cities of Barcelona, Granada, Seville, and Madrid. The tour included walking tours and a major attraction at the start of each destination city, but the rest of the time we were free to explore, join a group activity, or just chill in our hotel room or a nearby cafe. Our favorite experiences were the walking tours because the local gay tour guides were so knowledgeable, informative and personable. We learned a lot about the rich local history and culture of the Spanish cities we visited.  Our second favorite experiences were the fun group dinners and pre-and post dinner drinks that Scott organized and which most of us joined in. Although there was no pressure to join in other optional activities, we ended up signing up for a number of them such as cooking class, watching a flamenco show, and seeing the Prado Museum. They were all memorable and fun. Thank you Scott & Detours. If you are looking for a well run LGBT group travel experience, we strongly recommend Detours Travel. Victor and Jim from Palm Springs CA.

As a solo traveller I was a little worried about going on a group trip.  I saw all the other positive reviews and booked. Well there is a reason why the reviews are all 5 stars, I had the most amazing trip to Greece. I felt so relaxed right from the start after meeting all the other guys and our tour guide Oliver. The next 12 days was like having a holiday with all your friends and as a group we got to see and do so many fabulous things together. Oliver was our guide and how lucky were we to have him. He just did everything for us from booking taxis, restaurants, tours and putting information into our group chat so we always new exactly what was happening. He would even put a link in there to find our way back to our hotel after a couple to many drinks which was needed a few times. Detours is 5 star from the moment you make contact with them and continue even after your tour is finished. I just recommend them so much if you are looking to have that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. I can’t wait for my next adventure with them.

A Detours travel experience is like no other and I simply cannot recommend them more highly. If you enjoy well-planned, yet flexible itineraries, experienced trip leaders, knowledgeable local guides, high-quality accommodations, and small groups that breed new friendships, then you'll love Detours. We've taken 2 trips with Detours. One to Egypt and one to Thailand & Cambodia. In both cases, our trip leader, Shane, was the ultimate host. We've loved every minute of these trips and will go on another as soon as we can. Detours was started ten years ago (we got to celebrate their birthday in Cambodia!) by guys who are passionate about travel and wanted to build a brand that could extend that passion to their guests. They've cracked that code and we are thrilled to have been referred to them by friends. Detours balances hundreds of factors to build amazing travel experiences that are affordable yet lean into higher quality. This is no budget vacation package but it's also not a luxury package. And speaking of packages, while there is a framework of itinerary and pre-booked activities, there is also a lot of flexibility built-in. With small groups up to about 15 guests, this allows time to go off on your own or in small groups with newly-minted Detourse friends to explore your location. That's perfect for seasoned travelers as well as those who are just beginning to experience international travel. Happy 10th Birthday, Detours! We are so thrilled to have found you and highly recommend that readers of this review visit your website and find their next trip of a lifetime!

I took my first and certainly not the last Detours trip. It was to Portugal and Morocco, in October. My tour Guides Ollie and Shane were awesome. They helped with any questions and looked into any additional activities that you might want to do. I specifically asked about a balloon ride in Morocco that was one of my highlights. The accommodations were all great. This trip exceeded all my expectations. I have always been a solo traveler and it was nice to share this with fellow travelers. I found I did activities I most likely would have not done on my own. Taking a Tajine cooking class, gone on a camel ride, private dinner for the group at someone's home. This gave me the opportunity to explore and understand the culture and perspective of life that I would have missed otherwise. There were many planned activities but also plenty of down time, to do your own thing. I look forward to many more Detours adventures.

March 3, 2023.

I completed my first Detours trip to South Africa and I'm still in amazement of the experience. South Africa is amazing and so is Detours. Anytime we had a question, Miles or his team was quick to answer and assist in anyway they could. Our trip leader Darren was a complete joy who took the time getting to know each of us and helping us bond. This is the first time I've connected with my tour group and want to stay in touch with them. Several of us are planning future trips together. If you want an amazing experience and do something more than just seeing the sights, do a Detours tour. I'm so excited I took the chance and now part of the Detours family. Detours builds community on their trips so it feels like a bunch of friends decided to go on holiday together.

March 28, 2024.

Just finished up my 9th trip with Detours Travel and it was yet again another incredible trip! My first trip was in Costa Rica in 2015. Since then I have traveled with Detours to Peru, Thailand, South Africa, Croatia, Israel/Jordan, Italy, Scandinavia and New Zealand. If you are looking for a memorable trip with amazing adventures, I highly recommend you book with Detours! I am less than a week from returning from New Zealand and already thinking about my next trip.

Patrick N. - USA

February 15, 2024.

Tim and I had an amazing time on our Detours trip to Costa Rica. This was our first time on an all-male trip, so we did not know what to expect. We have already registered for our second trip with Detours, so you know where this review is going. Everything leading up to the trip was handled with professionalism and ease by Detours. That same vibe continued once the trip started. Brandon, our trip leader, was high-energy, fun, kind, inclusive, organized, connected, and on top of his game. He did not miss a beat, all details were attended to, and he made the trip enjoyable for all. Clay was equally kind and fun, and we look forward to one of his guided trips in the future. Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We loved the variety of our locations (the beach, the mountains, the hot springs / Volcano). A little bit of everything was perfect. We participated in so many unforgettable activities (ziplining, Tarzan swing, ATV, white-water rafting, canyoneering, sunset cruises, beaches, waterfalls, pool parties, park tours, . . . ) that filled our days and brought us even closer to the group of guys we traveled with. The beauty is you get to choose your own adventure. Do it all, or do nothing, no pressure. If that is not enough, you get to experience it all with a diverse group of men from across the globe. The friendships and connections we made were easy even for introverts and heightened our positive experiences. We hope to continue these friendships in our future travels. If you are on the fence, get off. A Detours experience is worth it. Enjoy your trip!

Only the best people to make your trip amazing.

The best travel destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers

Updated On 9th May, 2022

If you’re looking for the best gay friendly travel destinations or the best LGBTQ+ friendly places to visit, this is the blog post for you. With a frightening number of countries still criminalizing homosexuality , finding safe travel destinations poses challenges for LGBTQ+ individuals. Fortunately, the number of places that punish them for existing is growing smaller, and there are many locations that embrace gay and queer travelers with open arms.

If you are looking for your next vacation getaway, here are some of the best travel destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers that are definitely worth checking out. We couldn’t fit them all on one list, so this is very much just a starting point – let us know in the comments below if there are more LGBTQ+ friendly travel destinations that you would add to this guide!

The best LGBTQ+ friendly travel destinations...

1. san francisco, california, usa.

The first place on our list of best LGBTQ+ friendly destinations is San Francisco. San Francisco might be one of the best known queer-friendly cities, sometimes called the the  “ Gay Mecca ” of the world. Indeed, every queer should visit the city at least once. The enourmous gay clubs and rainbow crosswalks on Castro Street are packed any night of the week with drag queens and party goers, and the city boasts some of the world’d largest Pride and Leather events. In addition, there are many gay bars and organizations throughout the city, with a large and politically active queer community.

If you are not into clubs, there is plenty of sightseeing to do, as well as many excellent restaurants and museums. Attractions include the massive Golden Gate Park, the bustling Ferry Building, and the seaside shops on Pier 39 or Fisherman’s Wharf. You can also find uniquely quirky accommodations and shopping, as well as food options to fit every budget. While the city is home to many queer artists and activists, there is a growing population in the surrounding cities, particularly across the bay in Oakland. Among other attractions, here you can find the historic White Horse Inn, one of the oldest gay bars in the United States.

2. Guadalajara, Mexico

While Puerto Vallarta is known as one of the gay capitals of Mexico and features on many lists of best LGBTQ+ destinations, the community tends to be focused on retired gay men. Just a few hours inland, Guadalajara–known as the “ San Francisco of Mexico ”–boasts a larger, younger, and hipper LGBTQ+ community. As the second largest city in Mexico, you can find travelers and expats from all over the world, including the largest population of Canadians outside of Canada. There is a cluster of gay bars, drag shows, and clubs in the Gay Village near the historic Zona Centro that are reminiscent of San Francisco’s Castro District, which a chance to get a post-dancing snack at the rainbow-draped Tacos Gay afterwards. However, there are gay bars and thriving nighlife neighborhoods all over the city, such as the one around Avenida Chapultetec.

Often overlooked as a tourist destination, Guadalajara is significantly more affordable than the more popular and coastal locations in Mexico. As the second-largest city in the county, it has modern accommodations while still maintaining a more “authentic” Mexican culture. The beautiful and historic city has many sights to explore, with incredible architecture and fountains. Visit the stunning cathedrals with their stained glass windows, such as the Catedral in Zona Centro and the Expiatorio. There are numerous museums, bars, and restaurants with incredible and affordable cuisine, as well as ample shopping opportunities. You can also take day excursions to the neighboring areas, such as Tequila or Lake Chapala.

3. Portland, Oregon, USA

While Portland is probably best known for rain, bridges, stripclubs, and food cart pods, there is a thriving LGBTQ+ community in the city. It’s not difficult to find queer bars, drag shows, sports leagues, community organizations, art, and queer-owned businesses. The city has a long history of gay rights activism, and was one of the first major cities to repeal anti-gay legislation and elect an openly gay mayor. Their annual Pride parade is a part of a two-day festival, and there are numerous queer-focused events all year long. On sunny days, you can also find many gay folks hanging out in the clothing-optional sections of Collins Beach. It’s definitely one of the best places to visit for LGBTQ+ travellers!

Portland is also known for its excellent food and craft breweries, and there are numerous opportunities to explore. The numerous food cart pods offer clusters of delicious food and beverage options at reasonable prices. There also are stunning parks, gardens, and scenic areas, such as the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Gardens and Washington Park. The moderate temperatures and ample rain makes for some truly lush greenery. You can also find some incredible art and science museums to check out, or simply walk or bike around the city to enjoy the views. It is an affordable option whether you are looking for nightlife, nature, or cultural attractions.

4. Berlin, Germany

Berlin has long been a refuge for LGBTQ+ individuals, dating all the way back to the 1920s. Today, it’s one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Europe: there are Pride Week events, gay bars, clubs, and parties, queer cinema, a gay museum , and more. The largest event of the year is Christopher Street Day ( CSD Berlin ), where up to 750,000 people march, celebrate, and demonstrate on the streets. While many of the queer-oriented venues can be found in the gay neighborhoods such as the Rainbow District, you are sure to find events throughout the city. There are also numerous businesses that are queer-owened or advertise themselves as LGBT friendly.

In addition to the nightlife, the city has a rich history which makes for great sightseeing. Walk around under the fragrant linden trees enjoying the incredible architecture, visit museums, the Bradenburg Gate, or what remains of the Berlin Wall. At the Chekpoint Charlie Museum, you can see the old guardhouse and Cold War relics at what was the most famous crossing between East and West Berlin. On the eastern side of the city, you can still find the famous and adorable hat-wearing Ampelmännchen (“little traffic light men”)  on the pedestrian crossing lights. There are also endless opportunities to enjoy traditional German cuisine, beer, wines, and spirits, and the excellent public transportation makes it easy to get around.

5. Kona, Hawaii, USA

Kona lies on the western side of the island of Hawai’i, commonly referred to the “Big Island” to avoid confusion with the state of Hawaii. It is the location of the island’s main airport, and you can find plenty of queer events and nightlife without leaving the city. There is a Pride festival, gay bars and organizations, and a number of of queer-friendly businesses in this tropical locale, making it one of the best gay friendly destinations. For a relaxed vacation, enjoy some drinks on the beach, hike under the mango trees, or explore the city’s many shops and restaurants.

However, the “Big” Island is not that big, and there are abundant sightseeing opportunities on the whole island. You can see the live volcano Kilauea at Volcanoes National Park, one of the island’s many stunning waterfalls , or the moon up close at the Mauna Kea Summit Observatory. On the east side of the island, Hilo offers many sites and attractions as well, including the not-to-be missed Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve & Garden . The western side of the island is drier, but is better known for its snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. You will need a car to get around, and can easily drive across the island in a day, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take photos of stunning roadside views or exploring lava tubes. While there, don’t miss the chance to attend a traditional luau with Hawaiian food, hula dance, and fire performances.

6. Denver, Colorado, USA

Denver is a lesser-known LGBTQ hot spot that is growing in popularity as a queer travel destination which attracts people all over the world. In fact, it’s River North (RiNo) neighborhood was named of one the country’s top five emerging gay neighborhoods . Some of the more popular annual events include the Pride Festival, a Queer Film Festival, and the Gay Rodeo. In addtion, the city abounds with queer-centered nightlife and events, inlcluding gay bars, dance clubs, and drag shows. The city is also well known for it’s excellent craft beer–but be aware that alcohol might hit you differently at the elevation of the “Mile High City!”

Denver is known as a friendly, affordable, easily walkable, and cultural city. There is an an abundance of amazing food, parks, tourist attractions, and festivals. However, Colorado is a beautiful state if you’re looking to explore beyond the Denver-Boulder Metro area. Depending on the type of vacation you are looking for, you can find national parks for hiking and camping, museums, concerts, and more. For the more adventurous, a scenic drive through the Rocky Mountains offers incredible sightseeing opportunities, as long as you are mindful of the weather and road conditions in the colder months. You can even see part of the Grand Canyon, if you’re up for a longer road trip.

7. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa Del Carmen in the Mexican Riviera Maya is another up-and-coming LGBTQ+ hot spot . Formerly a small beach town, the small city has exploded with resorts and nightlife, to become one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico . While the city currently only has two official gay bars–both of which cater primarily to gay men–there are many drag shows, lesbian brunches, and gay-centered events to be found. Since many of the events are more “underground,” the best way to find them is to connect with other LGBTQ+ folks in the area via queer Facebook and WhatsApp groups. The city’s annual Pride Parade is a small one, but is reminiscent of the event’s original roots, where everyone is welcome to join the march for gay rights. In additon to the parade, there are numerous events during the entire Pride Week in June.

The primary tourist season for the area is Thanksgiving through New Years, but you can find travellers from all over the world at any time of the year. There are accommodation opportunities for every budget, from all-inclusive resorts to backpacker hostels. The city is packed with bars, restaurants, night clubs, beach clubs, and shopping on the main tourist strip, Avenida Quinta. There are also tons of outdoor activities, such as stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling, and kite boarding. The city is easily accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists, and visitors can take advantage of the inexpensive BiciPlaya rental bike stations. Enjoy a meal with your feet in the white sands while gazing at the turquoise Caribbean waters, or take excursions to visit cenotes , ruins, or the other quirky coastal cities, such as Akumal or Tulum.

8. Montevideo, Uruguay

Uruguay is the smallest country in South America , but is is also the most progressive. Nestled between the more well-known tourist destinations of Brazil and Argentina, it has some of the the oldest and strongest legal protections for LGBTQ+ individuals on the continent. The city is known for being culturally diverse and egalitarian, with many gay-focused events, organizations, and venues, as well as queer-owened businesses. Diversity month is celebrated every September, which ends with a March for Diversity.

Not only is Montevideo one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations, but it’s a great place to explore. The vibe of the cosmopolitan city is vibrant and laid-back, with some truly beautiful beaches. As the capitol city, it is an excellent base to explore the rest of the small county with day trips. While it is less “touristy” than other Latin American countries, it is one of the safest, and offers many excursions and activities. Whether you are looking for nightlife, historical attractions, or time in nature, you are sure to find activities you enjoy. Options include hot springs, horseback riding, museums, wildlife watching, and more.

9. Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is known for being one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Asia, and is especially welcoming to transgender people. In fact, it has one of the largest transgender communites in the world, as many from Southeast Asia and elsewhere flock there to escape discrimination and for gender reassignment surgery. In Bangkok, trans men and women are a part of the mainstream, and are commonly seen working in shops, restaurants, hotels and elsewhere. It is also the home of the annual Miss International Queen, the largest transgender beauty competition in the world. The gay scene in Bangkok offers something for everyone, whether you are looking for wild nightlife or luxury spas. You can find X-Rated night shows on the Soi Twilight strip, but there is also gay cabarets, drag shows, merman shows, speakeasies, karaoke, saunas and more. There is also ample opportunity for shopping, cuisine, and sightseeing. Be sure not to miss some of the historic cultural attractions, such as the Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha Temple.

The best way to find interesting things to do in Bangkok is by exploring the chaotic city rather than by looking for attractions online. It is also easily accessible to beach resort towns such as Pattaya or Phucket. In addition, you could take day trips to some of the famous markets and Buddhist temples. Public transportation makes it easy to get around, and inexpensive rideshare apps can get to you places the buses don’t reach. All in all it is an affordable travel destination with excellent food and a seemingly endless number of activities.

10. Tel Aviv, Israel

While the Middle East is generally not known for being especially safe for LGBTQ+ travelers, Tel Aviv is the exception. It’s known for being a hotspot for gay tourists, with a thriving community, nightlife, world-class cuisine and beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean Sea. While some of the surrounding cities are more conservative, Tel Aviv has become known as the “gay capital of the Middle East,” with the largest Pride Parade in the region. The gay nighlife revolves around massive parties rather than particular bars, and the beach in front of the Hilton is known as the city’s unofficial gay beach.

It is estimated that a quarter of the Tel Aviv’s population identifies as LGBTQ+, and they are able to enjoy legal protections and public displays of affection without fear. While city is known for being more open-minded and accepting than some of its neighbors, gay travelers shouldn’t be discouraged from visiting other parts of the country. You can easily take daylong excursions to see the historical sites in Petra, or to float in the Dead Sea. There are also culinary, art and boat tours, as well as markets, natural wonders, and wildlife.

12. Auckland, New Zealand

New Zealand is not only absolutely beautiful, but one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world. Auckland is often overlooked as a travel destination (I mean, it’s pretty hard to compete with the stunning natural beauty in other parts of New Zealand), but it’s a cosmopolitan city in a very liberal country and a great place to visit for LGBTQ+ travellers. It hosts a small but vibrant gay nightlife, as well as plenty of things to do in the city. And hey, it’s a great base for exploring the beaches, volcanoes and other nature that surround this beautiful city!

13. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The gay scene in Amsterdam is one of the largest in Europe, making it one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations. In 2001, the Netherlands was the first ever country to legalise same-sex marriage and is one of the most progressive countries in the world. 14. Vancouver, Canada

With mountains on its doorstep, Vancouver Island next door, and many things to do in the city… who wouldn’t want to go to Vancouver? And what’s more, like many cities in Canada, is a great destination for LGBTQ+ travellers. As well as exploring the city’s “gayborhood” of Davie Street, there’s also The Drive, a bohemian area popular with the lesbian community. In Vancouver you can find a rainbow pedestrian crossing at Davie/Bute Street, enjoy a LGBTQ history walking tour , celebrate Whistler Pride (one of the biggest LGBTQ+ ski events), as well as Vancouver Pride, the biggest gay pride festival in Western Canada.

It’s an unfortunate fact that there are many places in the world that are not the safest for LGBTQ+ travelers, and visiting a gay-friendly destination is not a guarantee of a vacation that is free from discrimination or harassment. If you are unsure of a destination that you wish to visit, it is wise to do some research before planning your trip, to ensure that you are more likely to enjoy a worry-free vacation. Finding gay-friendly travel destinatons provides unique opportunities to not only create happy memories, but to make new queer friends from all over the world.

LGBTQ Travel: A FABULOUS Guide to Gay Travel in 2024

We’re going to start this LGBT travel guide off a little differently than any old post. We’re going to start with a story .

*cue dramatic music*

Baby Indi, aka your caffeine addicted author, left home at 18. I booked a one-way ticket and swapped small town Australia for the delightful chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. Bold move for someone who still got lost in her four-street town.

With no phone, no map, and no iota of Vietnamese, I stopped for coffee in an alley. The first foreigner I’d seen in five days sat next to me. We got to talking and I thought things were going well. Then they asked:

“So you’re a lesbian right? Aren’t you afraid of travelling gay? ” I barely knew how to travel, wasn’t entirely sure I was a lesbian, and I didn’t really know how to give them an LGBTQ-friendly spiel… A gay travel guide assortment of tips and advice… Their questions really threw me. Should I be afraid to be a gay traveller?

Luckily, I kept travelling . I’ve never liked questions I couldn’t answer, so I started collecting dots and figuring out just how “difficult” it was to travel queer.

I learned that you’ve got to call a spade a spade and admit that sometimes being an LGBT traveller is not easy. But I also know that travelling can be the best gift to give yourself while trying to figure out which booties you like bumping and how to live a life that is still not considered “normal”.

Also, there are some super smashing gay friendly cities to fill the inspiration cup along the way. 😉

So buckle up, queer fam – this is everything I’ve learned so far and everything I wish I’d known before I went travelling. This is The Broke Backpacker’s LGBT Travel Guide!

Experiences of LGBTQ Travellers – A Challenges and Inspiration Sandwich

Best lgbtq travel destinations, lgbtq travel safety – how cautious do i need to be, lgbt travel guide – bonus tips and advice, faqs of gay travellers, wrapping up the lgbt travel guide.

For this article, I interviewed several other badass LGBT travellers. I have included their insights throughout this piece.

A common theme in the interviews was the sticky topic of labels. Labels are a bit of a funky one. They can feel very claustrophobic. It can also feel like you’re making it easier for someone else to understand you – and then they still don’t.

Also, it might be obvious to some, but there is  so  much more to someone than who they choose to smush. I feel like I’m a scrappy dirtbag, a sailor, and history nerd with a propensity for saying fuck at inappropriate times. Oh, and  then  I also happen to date men and women, sometimes at the same time (although to be honest, monogamy is my preferred arrangement these days).

But everyone I interviewed agreed that no matter which LGBTQ+ letter described us best, there are some common challenges (and rewards!) to being a gay traveller.

Hitting the road as a solo traveller is always going to be daunting. Hitting the road as a couple will always have its moments of drama. But whether you are backpacking alone, or with your partner, if your sexual orientation and/or gender presentation is not considered “normal” there are going to be unique challenges.

At one end of the scale, to put it bluntly, you could be beaten up. Or arrested.

Moving along the sliding scale of discrimination, as a gay traveller, you may face various forms of judgement depending on where you are in the world.

Perhaps it’s a little optimistically nihilistic of me, but I choose to remember that hometowns and family members aren’t always the most accepting rays of sunshine either.

There will, unfortunately, be people in every country who cannot find it in themselves to understand someone who is different from them. But you go ahead and live your best life anyway.

Two girls sit next to each other with the LGBTQ pride flag wrapped around them.

Besides, the transformative experience of travel is something undeniable. I also think it’s especially powerful for those of us who are gay. We weren’t handed the same script as everyone else. There is no “normal” for us – we have to write our own manifestos .

But instead of that being alienating, I think that’s a hidden superpower! Sorry, I’m not signing on to a 9-5 job and pretending to care about taxes. It’s just not part of the gay agenda.

Introducing the best hostel in Indonesia – A safe place for every traveller!

best gay travel app

Hell yeah, you heard right! There are many great places in Indonesia, but none of them can live up to Tribal Bali .

A unique coworking hostel for those that want to travel the world while working from their laptops. Make use of the massive open-air coworking spaces and sip on delicious coffee.

Need more work inspiration? Staying at a digital nomad-friendly hostel is a really smart way to get more done whilst still enjoying the social life of travelling… Mingle, share ideas, brainstorm, make connections and find your tribe at Tribal Bali!

But most importantly, Tribal is a place for open-minded and friendly travellers. Diversity and respect are two of the big core values that the hostel represents. No matter where you come from, what you look like or what you prefer, Tribal will welcome you with open arms!

Solo LGBTQ+ Travel

Going on a solo backpacking trip is all about freedom – and the consequences of that freedom. It can be little things like choosing the exact place you want to eat for breakfast. Or big decisions like saying, “to hell with it, I’m gonna live on a sailboat !”. There are no negotiations with anyone else!

BUT, you trade security for freedom when you travel alone . This gritty growth zone is the ultimate reward from solo travel. You get to break free from your old self and see just how diverse the world truly is.

A Nugget of Wisdom from a Cutie Interviewee

“(Coming from a small city) I had a very specific impression of what it meant to be gay… there wasn’t any nuance. Travelling alone was like realising oh, this is it. Even just little things like seeing two men (in Barcelona) holding hands in public and no one batting an eye. Immediately I was like, I want to live here forever.”

I want to stress that solo experiences will differ depending on which LGBTQ letter you most strongly identify with. Your gender, and your presentation of that gender, will also shape your experiences.

Even a small thing from my own travels drove this point home for me. The more feminine I look outwardly, and the ‘straighter’ I behave, the fewer comments and judgement I get about my sexuality. But then the less masculine I look, the more comments and fear that is directed toward me about being a delicate little girl travelling all alone who is going to DIE. So much for badass solo female travel …

A girl sits in a hammock while travelling solo

Travelling as a trans person, or as a gender non-conforming person, is not something I have experience with. I’m not going to speak for someone else’s experience.

However, I do believe that it is not so much your sexuality or gender presentation itself that bothers people – it’s how far from the ‘norm’ you appear to deviate. Another way of saying this is: (unfortunately) the more you look like stereotypes of the gender binary, the less discrimination or judgement you will face.

Travelling Together When Gay

There will be differences in the challenges – and rewards – of travelling as a partnership or group of friends depending on the same factors above. I’ve found that judgement comes less from your sexuality directly and more from how you present yourself. People are so damn afraid of anyone non-conforming!

A Nugget of Sad Reality From Another Interviewee

“(In a rural Australian town) it didn’t matter that I knew other gay people in town. Obviously, we exist. But if (as a lesbian), I was to hold my girlfriend’s hand in public I’d worry about getting spat on. Or at least, some kind of comment.”

I’ve been lucky that there have never been overt threats of violence made toward me relating to my sexuality. When I was living and travelling in Central America , two of my gay friends faced more overt threats of violence from small sections of the community (mostly borrachos late at night). But in many ways, they were very accepted too.

Nobody questioned their cross country quest on a motorbike, or whether they would be safe alone on the road. Well, of course, their mamas worried! I suspect that because the two friends I have in mind were typically masculine looking, they didn’t face the same judgement they might have if they were more feminine presenting.

Two old men on a motorbike travelling together while gay

Travelling in an LGBTQ group is not all compromising schedules or judgemental comments. You get to bond with your nearest, dearest, and most fabulous – all while travelling the world! There is also an extra sense of security. To this end, even finding a travel buddy can be a great way to make memories with someone special as well as feel a little safer.

A group of people – no matter what their orientation – checking into a hotel raises fewer eyebrows than a same-sex couple. Maybe the real gay agenda is uniting enough gays to safely check into a hotel in a foreign country.

The best place for gay travel? Well, that depends on your type! 😉

Let’s face it, there is nothing quite like some steamy cross-room eye contact with a chiselled stranger in a foreign country. One minute, you’re sipping wine and pretending you speak the language better than you do. Nek minnit… giggity.

Whether you want to swan through classy restaurants, luxury LGBTQ hotels, and secluded beaches – or you just want to PARTY HARD – there are gay-friendly cities for you!

A lgbtq traveller stands in front of a colourful mural in mexico

However, as I wrote this, I reflected on why there are safe spaces and gay cities in the first place – even why we have Pride in the first place. Gay Pride commemorates the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 . Gay Pride commemorates LGBTQ resistance to the violent police enforcement of immoral ‘morality laws’.

The New York cops raided a gay bar – as was typical of the time. They checked the sex of drag queens. They roughed up those who had gathered in a safe space. They violated our community and expected compliance. Yeah, fuck that. The uprising that followed marked a turning point for LGBT rights in the USA.

Our moments of joy and our spaces of inclusion have been fought for – tooth and nail. Then, when they couldn’t arrest us, they ignored us.

Again, fuck that . There was nothing to be gained hiding behind closed doors while misinformation allowed the AIDS crisis to spiral out of control. No, we stepped up and advocated for ourselves. We created community.

To that end, joy itself became an act of resistance . Existing as your unedited, loud, proud, gay-ass self gives those around you permission to be themselves.

So there is no reason for you to not claim your space as an LGBT traveller in some of the world’s best gay cities.

#1 Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington makes the top of my list for gay travel partly because there isn’t a whole lot of dedicated gay bars and LGBTQ+ spaces. There is a small and thriving scene, but Wellies (as the locals call it) is so welcoming and diverse that you don’t need to restrict yourself to LGBTQ places to feel safe .

There’s no need to worry about whether or not you can hold your partner’s hand in the street here!

two people cuddle in wellington

The city is alternative, funky, and has more coffee shops per head than New York! There are some truly epic hikes to be done around the area (try the Pinnacles Loop track where they filmed some of Lord of the Rings). Plenty of accommodation options around Wellington too, from the budget-friendly right up to the ooh-la-la . Also, museum nerd or not, you have to see the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongawera!

Wellington really has a bit of everything. It’s a beautiful city and, if you can get past the miserable weather (summer notwithstanding), you might find yourself wanting to stay here forever.

#2 Melbourne, Australia

A photo of the famous laneways in Melbourne.

What is it about great gay cities and good coffee? Melbs (as the locals call it) is another city that thrives on coffee, art, and craft beer. It might get a bit overshadowed by Sydney’s showy Madi Gras parade, but the gay travel scene in Melbourne is still epic.

The best things to do in Melbourne are interwoven into the fabric of this progressive city. So, while you can find cheeky speakeasies and gay bars all over Melbourne, you don’t have to stick to one area of the city to have a gay ol’ time!

You should try and time your trip with the Melbourne Comedy Festival or the Melbourne Fringe Festival. No one does comedy quite like Australians.

And let’s face it: if you come here single, the Aussie accent can prove hard to resist. Or so I hear…

#3 Bangkok, Thailand

Have you heard the saying that anything goes in Bangkok? I’d say there’s never been a truer aphorism! Bangkok is a very liberal city – and even more so for foreigners.

Alongside incredible street food, golden temples, and floating markets, there is also incredible nightlife. You can find a party that suits your style. There are burlesque clubs (I’m looking at you Maggie Choo’s!) and drag shows, as well as parties that go well past dawn.

A woman cooking Pad Thai on the street in Bangkok.

Far from what many still believe, gender has never been binary. Across cultures, and throughout history, there have existed those who don’t fit into ‘male’ or ‘female’.

Thailand is known for having a thriving scene full of kathoey , or ladyboys. I think this is partly due to Thailand’s broad acceptance of LGBT folks – as well as the low cost of medical and gender reassignment surgery.

Now, I didn’t go to Bangkok looking for sex shows, kinda shady dance clubs, or taking drugs with three beautiful ladyboys – and yet, thanks to my terrible sense of direction, that’s exactly what happened (sorry mum!).

There is so much intrigue and adventure to be had in Thailand with or without a soiree of Bangkok’s red-light district! But, it is quite a safe city in which to experiment in certain pleasures.

There is also the classic backpacker scene, which most definitely means booze, babes, and a total lack of worldy inhibitions. Book a place to stay in Bangkok , find a place to party, and the rest will fall into place.

As a gay traveller, you’re spoilt for choice in Bangkok!

#4 Barcelona, Spain

This is where the sexy eye contact with a sexy stranger anecdote came from. The many colourful neighbourhoods of Barcelona are known for brimming with a burning passion, vibrant art, cobblestone streets, fantastic wine… and an epic gay scene!

This city was the birthplace of the Spanish Pride movement and today is home to bars, beaches, and boulevards that are LGBTQ friendly. The balmy weather, the sexy locals, and the tolerance of the city means it is consistently ranked as one of the best gay cities in the world!

A person hanging out on some steps in Barcelona surrounded by graffiti

How could you say no to tapas, paella, and red wine while sharing a kiss with your partner on a beach?

There are even beaches specifically for LGBT folks.

Also, for the art nerds like me, the streets are literally shaped by Antoni Gaudi. His modernist architecture gives Barcelona its classic building style that has been the backdrop for many romantic proposals.

Barcelona is definitely a more refined place to travel to – but that certainly doesn’t mean you won’t be in for a good time.

#5 Berlin, Germany

To me, Berlin is the grungier counterpart to Barcelona’s sleepy Spanish siesta take on LGBT travel. There’s way less sunshine – and a little more hedonism. But sometimes you need a little bit of that in your travels. 😉

I’ve been to Berlin twice. The first time I spent all day bawling at the Holocaust museum and shaking at the Berlin Wall monument. I was grappling with how such horror affected the psyche of a city.

The second time I went to Berlin, I got my answer. I think that you have to respond to sadness with an overwhelming embrace of life at its ‘most’. That’s how I explain what happens when the sun sets and the techno takes off.

Brandenburg Gate in Berlin with sunset behind

There are clubs and bars galore, as well as cheeky substances on offer to enhance your night. Being gay in Berlin isn’t going to be about restraining your sexuality – but maybe it’ll be about restraining yourself in other ways (like, how about we limit it to three orgies per night?).

Again, I wasn’t exactly looking for sex clubs. And yet, my incessant curiosity and patent disregard for following directions lead me to drinking liquor out of a plastic bag and waiting for my new friend to finish her shift at a very kink-friendly club.

Berlin is a lot to take in; it’s a big city filled with diverse areas and a whole lot of history. But it’s definitely somewhere you can feel safe as an LGBTQ traveller.

#6 Riga, Latvia

Eastern Europe has a mix of Catholic and Communist values when it comes to gay rights. That is to say: it’s not known for being exactly accepting.

Riga – and Latvia at large – has tried to define themselves as the opposite of these values. It has an alluring and classy art nouveau scene with some truly stunning architecture. As a reaction to the values of many of its neighbours, there’s also thriving nightlife!

A clear day in Riga - a top city for gay travellers.

There are a few gay bars, but it’s not a huge scene. That being said, Riga is quite open-minded and LGBTQ travellers aren’t likely to face open discrimination.

We don’t always go travelling to go from bar to bar though! There is so much more to Riga that will make you fall in love with it. The buildings are incredibly ornate and look straight out of a gothic novel – House of Blackheads is insane!

Plus, you can try your hand at learning Latvian. It’s not the easiest language to learn on your travels , but damn if it isn’t fun to try and pronounce uz redzesanos (goodbye).

#7 Mexico City, Mexico

Viva la Mexico! I would argue that this could very likely be the best gay city in the world . There is a heady mixture of sinful nightclubs, low key dining, and incredible art and history. Mexico City itself is quite liberal – it was the only place in Central America you could get an abortion and was the first Latin American city to legalise gay marriage!

Museum display of Frida Khalo's clothes on manequins at the Blue House Casa Azul in Mexico City

Transgender people have also been able to legally change their pronouns since 2008. Guess that’s why it’s Mexi- can and not Mexi- can’t .

Zona Rosa is the famous gay neighbourhood in Mexico City – and you should definitely visit. Be prepared to PARTY, though! There is also an incredible crafts market here where I found a good deal on amber, but you can find almost anything .

If you are looking for something a bit more chill, I had an amazing time Couchsurfing in Roma. There is still a good gay scene here, but it’s a bit more laid back – think more good coffee and fine wine.

Mexico City can be quite confronting. There is extreme wealth and poverty side by side. There is an element of criminality that can’t be ignored. However, there is such an energy to the city and the locals are so overwhelmingly welcoming that I think it should be at the top of your gay travel list!

#8 Medellin, Colombia

Medellin has truly transformed from the murder capital of the world to one of the most welcoming cities in Latin America – and the world – for gay travellers. Brimming with colourful neighbourhoods and areas , Medellin offers EPIC food, endless fun, and people so beautiful that if you’re not bi… you might just try. 😉

The Pride festival is not to be missed here! It’s an epic show of support in true Latina fiesta style. The locals of Medellin are super welcoming – especially to foreigners. While Colombia is still quite a conservative country, gay marriage is legal and so is same-sex couples adoption.

Joe stood in front of a blue Graffiti tour wall in Comuna 13, Medellin, Colombia

The Flower Festival held in August is not something to be missed. And neither is a street food indulgence – I mean the churros, empanadas, even the perfectly barbequed corn. They are all amazing!

And Colombians – of both genders – really know how to dance. I was left wondering if I was born with two left, unsexy feet!

#9 Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is the unofficial gay capital of Africa. Along with torrents of captivating coffee, the best gay cities always seem to have scrumptious wine of the vine – and Cape Town doesn’t disappoint .

There is incredibly beautiful scenery around alongside some great hiking to be done around the edges of the city.

two gay penguins in cape town

Cape Town is also a great place to learn to surf… or even swim with great white sharks. That could be a romantic surprise for your not-so-confident-in-the-water friend! Be sure to check out the nearby penguin colonies too.

I will say that the lived reality of some gay South Africans does not match their fairly progressive legislation. Even though gay marriage is legal here, there is still resistance to queer folks in parts of the country. However, as an LGBTQ foreigner – especially in the progressive areas of Cape Town – you are unlikely to face discrimination. Many businesses openly display rainbow flags, and there is a concerted effort to promote equality amongst large sectors of the local communities.

#10 Tel Aviv, Israel

Tel Aviv is a paradox within a paradox . The most accepting city of LGBTQ rights within a notoriously divisive country within an even more infamously unaccepting region of the planet.

But, the Tel Aviv Pride is known to be rambunctious and full of life! There are many amazing bars that are LGBTQ+ friendly, and you are likely to feel right at home when partying with Israelis. Because once the bass starts to wobble at an Israeli throwdown, there is only shalom.

A handful of LGBT travellers skateboarding in the streets of Tel Aviv.

There are many gay bars in Tel Aviv that range from low key gardens, to epic nightclubs. It’s also a fascinating city full of complex history and holy sites. (Yes, even in Israel’s “Sin City” there are holy places!)

So, as a foreigner, you are unlikely to face discrimination in Tel Aviv. In fact, you’re probably going to have an amazing time eating hummus and partying all night. But you probably won’t be able to escape this feeling that gay spaces in Tel Aviv aren’t exactly representative of the country as a whole. But in no way is Tel Aviv either.

On Tel Aviv, From Another Interviewee

“The reason it is so full of life is that it has had to resist pressure from within Israel and across the Middle East. Throughout Israel and beyond there is pervasive resistance to ‘queer’ lifestyles. I love to be out in ‘gay Tel Aviv’ because it is a break from the constant pressure to conform.”

Like I said at the beginning of the article, I’m not going to tell you that you shouldn’t go somewhere . I’m not going to tell you how you should or shouldn’t travel in these places either. Ultimately though, there are countries in the world where it is more dangerous to be an LGBTQ traveller.

The penal code of some countries explicitly criminalises acts of buggery – with punishments varying from death to prison sentences to fines. On top of that, there are cultural and religious perceptions of ‘queerness’ that range from acceptance to contempt.

However, I think it’s important to recognise that even within countries that are considered safe for LGBT travellers, there are ALWAYS people that won’t accept you. Many of us come from families that don’t fully accept us. And even within countries where being gay is a literal crime, gay people still exist. Life is murky soup and no matter where you go, you will find that people are people.

Perception is Everything

“That reminds me of being in Greece with a girl I was seeing… she got really scared I s’pose for being out together and holding hands at night together because of all the men just standing there on the corners. I didn’t feel like they were looking at us like they wanted to attack us, so I think it depends on the person (as to how comfortable you are).”

The most comprehensive article on LGBTQ travel safety I found was this list of the 150 Worst and Safest Countries for LGBTQ travel ; the article made the link between many countries which have “anti-gay” legislation and their status as former British colonies. Add that to the dirty laundry list of colonialism – widespread criminalisation of non-hetero activities and the breeding of stigmas that still lingers to this day.

When thinking about the regions of the world and how dangerous it would be to travel gay there, I thought about this question: what would happen if I held the hand of my same-sex partner in public in this area?

If no one would blink an eye – I think this is a pretty accepting area. If there may be some eyebrows raised and judgement passed, but ultimately little risk of violence, then it’s amber. If there is a threat of violence or holding hands could be seen as criminal, this is a red area for gay travellers.

LGBTQ

There is no easy way to generalise whole countries. As we know, some of us come from green zone countries and yet still face homophobia from our families or communities. Conversely, some places that are likely safe for LGBTQ travellers are not safe for LGBTQ locals.

And within countries that on the whole are unaccepting, there are still some of the best gay cities to be found. Mexico is a good example of this. Even though it is a country that can be quite conservative and overtly violent toward LGBTQ travellers and locals, Mexico City is one of the safest and most enjoyable cities for gay travellers in the Americas!

Also, some countries in South America, for example, might seem like they wouldn’t be considered ‘safe’ countries. I would argue that somewhere like Brazil will add elements of danger to your travels, but they won’t necessarily stem from your sexuality.

Gay or straight, walking through a favela in the early hours of the morning will lead to you fighting street dogs at best and at worst… Let’s just say there is an element of common sense to all travel.

Tl;dr? Life is murky soup: use common sense.

How to Travel in the ‘Red’ Areas (some ideas from one queer to another)

And on the topic of common sense…

  • Sometimes masking is your safest option. As one friend glibly put it to me: “There’s no problem travelling gay – you just pretend you’re straight.” But in all seriousness, if you find yourself in an unsafe area – in any country – sometimes it’s best to just play the game.
  • Travel with someone else anywhere you don’t feel safe. There is strength in numbers should something go terribly wrong. But another person can be all the confidence boost you need when travelling somewhere you don’t feel super safe in.
  • Always let your mum (or a friend) know where you’re going and when you expect to be back. That way, if you are alone and the worst does come to pass, there are people in the know who can raise the alarm.

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

There are general safety tips that apply to ALL travellers.

Things like not showing off your sexy, shiny new watch and locking your valuables away… It’s always worth keeping an eye on the weather before you head out and go on a hike you’ve never done before… And for veteran backpackers, these things become second nature.

However, I do want to highlight a couple of extra safety tips that are unique to the queer travel community.

Down to the Fun Stuff

Hook up apps are da bomb ! They are a tried and tested method to find love and sex on the road . Where else can you find the best bars to go to and also chat with cute-ass strangers? But I’m gonna lightly drizzle on this parade.

If you do use dating apps in countries where there are legal or violent repercussions for being gay, a quick word of warning: the police and other vigilantes have been known to use apps to lure other gay men to icky ends.

Do I think this is fucked up? Absolutely.

Do I get riled up for a twenty-minute rant about why the fight for LGBTQ rights is far from over and then voice memo it to my colleague at 8.30 in the morning? Fucking oath I do. (But he loves it.)

BUUUUT… do I still think that Grindr can be a super fun way to meet people on the road? Hellz yeah!

The same goes for casual sex. The backpacker life and hook up culture go together like good wine and gay cities. There’s a fair bit of experimenting and the odd romance on the road that makes you believe in love again. Why shouldn’t gay travellers indulge in the same sexy smush times?

You just gotta do it safely. Safe sex is good sex.

Young backpackers dancing on a bar whilst partying in Cambodia, Southeast Asia

Yes, safe sex includes raspberry-flavoured condoms but it also involves some genuine sensitivity, open communication, and the odd moment of vulnerability. Free love is about love as much as it is about sex, so be kind to each other.

Also, sex toys are considered illegal in several countries. This is something worth knowing before your bag gets searched at the airport and suddenly old mate from customs is wielding three of your double-ended dildos! (Was that one a personal anecdote?)

Travel Insurance – The Not So Sexy Essential

When your sense of direction is as shit as mine is, you find yourself in some interesting travel situations. Sometimes it’s in the back room of a sex club in Bangkok; sometimes it’s assisting a sailor to extract a botfly from his own leg and trying not to vomit in your mouth.

Basically, the best travel can get weird . To cover your butt while you’re out adventuring – I’d highly recommend getting some travel insurance.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

What to Pack for LGBTQ Travel

A gay traveller with a pink plushie strapped to the outside of his backpack.

Along with the usual essential travel items , there’s a few extra items that you don’t want to forget! If you’re taking PrEP, or hormone medication, make sure you have enough to last through your trip. These are not often readily available throughout the world.

As I mentioned before, sex toys are illegal in many countries . They have been used in some instances as evidence that a gay or transgender person was intending to work as a sex worker in that travel destination.

Do I call bullshit? Yup. This is likely discrimination through and through. But call a spade a spade, know the risks, and hide your sex toys well.

Also if you are travelling as a transgender or gender non-conforming person, getting through airport security – no matter what country – can be an extra challenge. Things like having paperwork from your doctor explaining why you might be travelling with needles, or having a passport photo that looks as close to your appearance as possible can make it a little easier. I’m going to pass the mic to this excellent breakdown of the challenges trans folk face with the TSA.

Top Tips LGBTQ Travellers Wish They Could Tell Their Younger Selves

  • Hook up apps aren’t just for hook ups! The best bars, the most secluded hikes, and even some of the best street food can all be found by having a chat on hook up apps. Also, not to be crass, but you can also find certain substances on there too if you’re so inclined. It’s not all bang city!
  • But they are still good for hook ups. Duh! Especially when you are new to a place, one way of meeting people is a cheeky swipe of Tinder or Grindr.
  • Don’t be afraid of the world . “I wish I had been less afraid,” is the phrase that came up again and again when talking with other LGBTQ travellers about their first time on the road. The world is not as scary as we make it out to be and you’ll always find your tribe.
  • Travel provides the anonymity to find yourself . Sexuality is a complicated beast and it’s hard to listen to yourself and what you truly want over the din of other people. Sometimes you have to become a ‘no one’ and unwatched by friends and family to give yourself the space to learn more about yourself as a traveller, as a gay person, and as a human on this crazy planet.
  • GO TRAVELLING SOONER. This is the NUMBER ONE tip for gay travellers. You can always come home (or find a home). But leaving and discovering the world and your place in it rewards you 1000-fold. Go travelling as soon as you can. Whether that means hitchhiking for the first time , or backpacking around Europe, or a road trip up the coast of your home country. Just go travelling sooner.

The top questions gay travellers always want to know!

Can I still travel alone if I’m gay?

Of course you can! And I’m a huge advocate of solo travel for LGBTQ folks as well as anyone else. Will you always be comfortable? Probably not. You can do your best to be safe, and you can do all the ‘right’ things, but ultimately there is risk. Nonetheless, I think you should still travel alone as an LGBTQ person. Fear should not be a limiting factor in your growth or adventure.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you as a gay traveller?

So many little moments of hilarity spring up when travelling but this one comes to mind: I was in a market in New Delhi, India, on a sort-of-not-quite-but-definitely-a-date that lesbians are fond of. She began haggling hard with one of the vendors for a scarf while I sat on the milk crate. Shopping, unfortunately, has never really been my thing. Two other young Indian guys were waiting for their girlfriends in nearby market stalls. I started chatting to one of them who realised I was also waiting for my girlfriend, like he was. Once that penny dropped, he kept showing me photos of his brother and his brother’s husband in America and suggesting the best underground gay bars in New Delhi! I guess it wasn’t so much funny as incredibly sweet. Life is murky soup: people are always people.

Will travelling LGBT be dangerous?

It’s most likely not going to be dangerous! Especially if you pick a destination that is known for being welcoming to LGBTQ travellers. You could learn salsa in Medellin or hike in Portugal or party it up in Bangkok! And even if you do push into countries that aren’t known for being LGBTQ friendly, there are no guarantees that you will face danger. But you may find yourself editing the way you present yourself to the world at times.

How do I deal with people who don’t accept me as gay?

A good friend of mine (in her words) is a “fat, hot lesbian”. I think I’ll throw it to her to answer this one: “I grew up near London. I’ve had mouthy twats… if they see a gay person, you know, I can’t even count how many times I’ve been told, YOU FAT LESBIAN. But you’re not telling me anything I don’t know, ya prick! I’m fat and I’m gay well done you’ve got eyes! But in all seriousness, you can’t expect that someone who’s been raised in a Church for twenty, forty, fifty years who has been told that being gay is a sin to just suddenly love the first gay person they meet. You will also be wrong about a lot of things in your life, and this is just something they’re fucking wrong about.”

Should I ever hide being gay while travelling?

I think there is a distinction between hiding your sexuality publicly and ignoring it personally. Sometimes I do think that hiding that you are gay while travelling is the safest option. Knowing a country and how risky it is to LGBTQ travellers helps, but ultimately there will be moments that set off your intuition. Listen to your gut and get the hell out of dodge. But even as you might have to hide yourself publicly, you should never forget within yourself who you are or what you stand for.

By now I think it’s clear that I want everyone to go travelling as soon as you can. You have the space to grow into yourself without the pressures or expectations of home. You get to push yourself into the best version of yourself.

Two men show off their beer bellies while travelling gay together.

I know it would be a lie to say that I never faced hurdles for being queer. You have to look the beast in the eye and know that some regions of the world still don’t accept the LGBTQ community.

However, this should not be a reason for you to stay at home. The greater presence of gay travellers then the more normalised we become, and the less dangerous it is for the LGBTQ travellers that come after us.

Also, there is far too much good coffee and the fresh mango on this side of the Pacific to be sampled for LGBTQ travellers to simply stay at home! You’ve got continents to hitchhike and the great gay cities to enjoy. Travel bonds are supercharged, and you can’t help but come back with friends that you never can quite kick out of your heart (not that you want to!).

We were never given a script to follow. There is no ‘normal’ life when so many people – even within our own communities – still don’t see who we love as normal . In that sense, there is no point trying to fit your fabulous self into an itty bitty box that only has room for a dead-end job and forgetting to take the trash out. There is all the more reason to explore the world as an LGBTQ traveller.

“Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.”

That is to say, joy is an act of resistance . So pack your bags and prepare to travel gay. You’ve got a chiselled stranger, a glass of fine wine, and the secluded beaches of somewhere spectacular to enjoy.

A couple sit at the end of a dock at sunset.

Hey, folks – thank you for making it to the end of the article and I hope you enjoyed it!

Basically, as I touched on at the beginning of the article, I can only write from my experience. If you think that a crucial piece of advice is missing for our queer travelling family – please reach out in the comments. Especially if you are a trans traveller – I’d love to be able to put together some more resources and inspiration for y’all.

7 Best Places For LGBTQ+ Travelers to Visit in 2023

7 Best Places For LGBTQ+ Travelers to Visit in 2023

We count down our top destinations for LGBTQ+ visitors to travel to.

This year LGBTQ + travelers want destinations that offer something special, whether that is cultural immersion, historical or culinary tours, out-of-this world adventure, gorgeous beaches, or just the biggest queer parties on the planet. With that in mind we chose our top seven countries, including destinations in the Americas, Europe , Asia , Oceania, and Africa . Join us as we count down to number one.

Cenote in Mexico by LRC Imagery/Getty Images

Mexico continues to be a top destination for queer travelers. The country’s tourism department (SECTUR) reports 3.5 million LGBTQ+ visitors annually.

The beachside resort town of Acapulco first gained an international queer contingent in the mid-20th century as a magnet for Hollywood celebs. It has recently experienced a resurgence and now its LGBTQ+ scene and businesses are luring more queers back to the region. It’s gaining a reputation as a gay party town with Las Vegas-style drag shows, techno nightclubs, and beachside dancing.

The capital of Jalisco, Guadalajara, is often called the “Gay Capital of Mexico” due to its embrace of the queer community. It is among the most LGBTQ-accepting in Latin America (Mexico City also ranks in the top five). Guadalajara is Mexico’s second largest city and offers diversity in food, cultural, and entertainment options. Its gayborhood is located in the historic center of the city, where parties spill into the streets most nights. Come during February to experience the local Carnival.

The Riviera Maya destination of Playa del Carmen features white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. There are three gay beaches here: Mamitas Beach, Coco Beach, and Xangrila Beach.

Becoming known as the “Mexican San Francisco,” Puerto Vallarta features some of the most beautiful beaches in the LGBTQ-embracing state of Jalisco. The city’s Romantic Zone is a popular spot during the day and locals and tourists mingle at buzzy queer clubs nearly every night of the week. During Pride (celebrated here in May), the neighborhood becomes one big block party. Puerto Vallarta offers many activities for those who want to have more adventurous experiences, including day trips to Punta de Mita and nearby Marietas Islands, where the diversity of birds and sea life has earned it the nickname of “the Mexican Galapagos.”

#6 Australia

Australia by Louise Denton Photography/Getty Images.

Australia is a dream destination for adventurers, albeit a distant one. The nation’s Great Barrier Reef just off the coast of Queensland is rightfully on many travelers’ bucket lists — and Sydney is undeniably a gay hot spot. But with abundant natural beauty, outdoor adventures, historical sites, and a rich Indigenous peoples’ culture, the island continent has much more to see.

In Sydney, New South Wales, the world-famous Harbor Bridge and Opera House are must-sees, with the more daring climbing the bridge itself. Also worth a visit is the Royal Botanical Gardens, the gay Oxford Street LGBTQ+ district, and the Sea Life Aquarium to observe Sphen and Magic (aka Sphengic), the world-famous gay penguin couple. You can also learn about Australia’s history as a penal colony with visits to Cockatoo Island and the Hyde Park Barracks. Walk the cliffs outside Bondi Beach and Manley, where at least 80 gay men were killed in the latter portion of the last century.

In Queensland the Great Barrier Reef may be the most famous tourist destination, but the state is also home to Daintree Rainforest.

At Adelaide in southern Australia, you can cage-dive with great white sharks. The area is also renowned for its wine regions, including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, and Coonawarra. To truly get off the beaten path, head north to Darwin, famous for its 86 degree waters. The Tiwi Islands, home to a large Indigenous population, are renowned for fishing and isolated resorts. The waters here are crystal clear and invitingly warm, but patrolled by deadly crocs.

Retrace the route of the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert , starting at the Imperial Hotel in Sydney, Proudly LGBTQ+ since 1983, the hotel features Priscillas, Drag N Dine, and Carlotta's Rooftop. Follow Imperial with visits to Broken Hill and its Queenslander-styled Palace Hotel , the mining community of Coober Pedy (BYO ping pong balls), and finishing at the Lasseters Hotel Casino in Alice Springs.

In late February and early March, Sydney will be hosting its annual Mardi Gras as well as Sydney WorldPride . It’s the first time WorldPride will be held in the southern hemisphere.

Malta by Trabantos/Getty Images

Malta is a small archipelago of islands, just off the southern coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. The country has been continuously occupied for almost 8,000 years as an important port and trading hub connecting Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Its culture reflects these intersectional roots and Maltese food is a nuanced blend of many worlds.

Malta is known for gorgeous views and perfect year-round weather. Peak season is both crowded and pricey, but in spring or fall, fewer tourists compete for space on its beaches and in its restaurants.

Visit the fortified cities of Mdina and Birgu, the former established by Phoenicians in the 8th century B.C.E. Gozo should still be high on your list, even without the Azure Window, a limestone arch that once reached into the sea before collapsing in 2017. Visit the world-renowned Blue Lagoon on the island of Camino. The breathtaking natural pool features deep azure-colored waters.

Malta is gaining a reputation as one of the most queer-inclusive spots in Europe, with festive annual Pride celebrations every September. It would be difficult to name every gay bar and LGBTQ-welcoming establishment in Malta, but there are a few that top our list. We love club Lollipop, located in the coastal capital city of Valetta. The Birdcage Lounge in Rabat has a fun mixed crowd and karaoke. Though not an exclusively LGBTQ+ space, lesbian-owned Maori is popular due to its monthly parties for queer women. The Phoenicia in Valletta offers 1920s elegance and 5-star luxury while the Marco Polo Party Hostel in St Julian’s provides a lively mixed crowd.

#4 Thailand

Thailand by Thatree Thitivongvaroon/Getty Images

Thailand has a rich culture and long embrace of gender and sexual diversity, and outlaws LGBTQ+ discrimination. In the most LGBTQ-welcoming country in South East Asia, Bangkok is considered the region’s queer capital. On the city’s pedestrian-only streets in the gayborhood Silom, you’ll find gay bars including Circus, Balcony, and Stranger Bar (considered the epicenter of Bangkok drag culture). The neighborhood features many other LGBTQ+ establishments including hotels, massage parlors, clubs, saunas, and restaurants. After partying all night refresh by checking in for an advanced wellness experience at luxury spa Sindhorn Wellness by Resense.

Bangkok is enough to captivate any traveler for weeks on end, but you’ll want to visit other areas as well. Taking a train is a great way to travel through Thailand, but some areas can only be reached by boat. Gay tours are abundant, for example, Out Of Office offers numerous options from island hopping to culinary tours to a New Year’s celebration on a gay beach.

Phuket is another common queer destination. There the Patong neighborhood plays home to gay bar and cabaret club Zig Bar/Zag Club and the Patong beach where Phuket Pride is held each year.

Visit Koh Samui in southern Thailand, where the queer-run Samui Elephant Sanctuary allows elephants to retire from giving rides or entertaining tourists. Enjoy your own refuge at gay-owned Six Senses Samui Thailand which features an infinity pool overlooking the gulf of Thailand — and your own tree house. Party at Pride Bar Samui which features drag queens and karaoke.

#3 South Africa

South Africa by Pierre-Yves Babelon/Getty Images

South Africa is a land of amazing natural and cultural contrasts and is a much sought-after destination for adventurous LGBTQ+ travelers.

No visit to South Africa is complete without an extended stay in Cape Town. This cosmopolitan city has a vibrant food and arts scene with plenty of opportunities for exploring, and iconic Table Mountain looms over it all. To sample the city’s eclectic art scene try a walking tour of the Woodstock Street Art District. The Cape Town region also offers hiking, swimming, surfing, sport fishing, and golf. You can also try your hand at lawn bowling or take in a match of cricket. Day trips to nearby wine regions are highly recommended, with many tour operators providing outings.

Another must-see destination is Robben Island northwest of the city. Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years in prison here. The island penal colony had a reputation for harsh conditions and prisoner abuse. Closed for good in 1996, it is now a South African National Heritage Site as well as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There is no hiding the nation’s ugly history of apartheid, the institutional system of racial segregation that plagued South Africa for decades. And yet the people persevered and overcame the oppressive system and continue to address the injustices that it wrought. Johannesburg’s Apartheid Museum enumerates those errors, while offering hope for the country’s future by highlighting the nation’s constitutional pillars enshrining freedom and equality (including for LGBTQ+ people). Consider also exploring the city with a walking tour, which can include spots important to both Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian leader who lived in South Africa for over two decades.

An hour-long flight south takes you to Durban, famed for its Golden Mile of shoreline on the Indian Ocean. The city is home to the largest concentration of Indian nationals outside of India, and their cultural influences are reflected in the area’s diverse foodie scene. A visit to the nearby Valley of 1000 Hills provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Zulus, the country’s largest Indigenous tribe.

North of the city, a wind-blown, nondescript location is home to the Nelson Mandela Capture Site memorial and museum documenting not just Mandela’s 1962 arrest and 27-year imprisonment, but also the Nobel Prize winner’s subsequent political contributions.

#2 The Dutch Caribbean

Curaçao by Justin Lewis/Getty Images

The Caribbean islands represent a range of communities whose diversity has been intensified by their colonial pasts. The Dutch Caribbean (once known as the Dutch West Indies) are islands once claimed by the Netherlands, specifically: Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

The Dutch are some of the most accepting of LGBTQ+ rights and these islands embrace queer travelers, (though some admittedly haven’t extended true equality to all their own citizens).

Sint Maarten is half an island (the other half is Saint Martin, which follows French laws, including marriage equality). On the Dutch side, homosexuality was never a crime, but the government hasn’t embraced same-sex marriage rights. You’ll find plenty to do here when you can pull yourself away from the gorgeous beaches. The restaurant L’Escargot is known for its French cooking, and La Cage Aux Folles- style cabarets. Bliss is the island’s best gay-friendly nightclub. The open-air space has a pool, dance floor, and two bars that specialize in creative mixology, plus plenty of space for lounging.

Aruba hasn’t codified LGBTQ+ equality in law, but queer travelers will find themselves warmly welcomed to the “One happy island” that prides itself on embracing diversity. Those seeking adventure should turn to De Palm Tours for dune tours and off-road safaris; as well as SNUBA, snorkeling, and semi-submersible exploration of the underwater world. Pamper yourself with a visit to the spas at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba , or Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino . Outside the hurricane belt, Aruba offers year-round sunshine, vibrant art and culinary scenes, and ambitious sustainability efforts. At last report, 7 Club Lounge Bar (@7), once known as Jimmy’s Place, remains closed.

Curaçao is one of the Caribbean’s smaller islands, with a population of 160,000, off the coast of Venezuela. The island never criminalized homosexual relations and in 2011, passed anti-discrimination protections for gay and bisexual people. Lyric’s Café was once the island’s only regular queer venue, but many locals now drink and dance at Wet and Wild Beach Club. Floris Suite Hotel’ s LGBTQ+ Rainbow Lounge holds quarterly parties and events. Nearby Moomba Beach is an adults-only gay-friendly beach where the boys hang out.

Toronto, Canada by Rudy Sulgan-Getty Images.tif

Canada is one of the most LGBTQ-inclusive countries in the world. In fact, it topped the 2022 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index , an annual ranking of the 203 safest (and worst) countries for queer travel. America’s neighbor to the north also has stunningly beautiful wilderness, leading ski resorts, vibrant Indigenous communities, and culturally diverse cities.

In the predominately French-speaking province of Quebec, Montréal has old-world European charm in neighborhoods with cobblestoned streets. The annual Fierté Montréal Pride Festival is one of Canada’s most colorful. The Gay Village’s Rue Sainte-Catherine, becomes a walking promenade during most summer months and the queers have busted out of the neighborhood, spilling into the surrounding historic district with additional LGBTQ-owned shops, spas, and restaurants.

On the banks of the Great Lakes, Toronto is said to hold the title for the most diverse metropolis in the world, where 230 nationalities are represented and the residents speak over 140 languages. The largest city in Canada’s kaleidoscope of cultures has helped spice up the vibrant culinary scene and neighborhoods. Toronto’s celebration of diversity extends to its LGBTQ+ citizens. The Village at Church and Wellesley remains a queer institution and the trendy Queen Street West is sprinkled with new LGBTQ+ hangouts.

Calgary is in the Alberta prairie but perfectly located to explore the Canadian Rockies and the country’s most stunning national parks. Nearby Jasper Basin holds one of the top gay ski weeks. Calgary is also known for its cowboys, and the city hosts the world’s largest gay rodeo association, so visitors may be surprised at its metropolitan neighborhoods and shocked it’s home to the biggest queer Canadian nightclub west of Montreal, Twisted Element.

Between the Pacific Ocean and the base of North Shore Mountains, Vancouver is a beautiful city that draws LGBTQ+ visitors year-round. Its location provides a great starting point for outdoor adventure whether it’s hiking the local trails, kayaking to Vancouver Island, or hitting the nearby slopes at Whistler, Canada’s top ski resort. As the country’s biggest port, the city has attracted a diverse population, which has helped fuel its bourgeoning foodie and art scenes. There are two gayborhoods: Davie Village, with a wide variety of gay bars, restaurants, and stores; and Commercial Drive (also locally known as The Drive), home to a thriving lesbian community. The largest Pride celebration in western Canada is held in Vancouver every August.

LGBTQ+ travel website provides community, safety for gay tourists

best gay travel app

By Juliette Goodrich

SAN FRANCISCO ( KPIX ) — A tech start up is trying to help make travel safer for the LGBTQ+ community with a platform described as the world’s largest short-term vacation rental marketplace for gay travelers.

The site is called MisterBandB.com . It features one million hosts in countries worldwide, all confirmed to be LGBTQ+ friendly.

One host in San Francisco told CBS News Bay Area he loves providing a safe travel space for LGBTQ+ vacationers.

Joaquin Aran has lived in his San Francisco home for three years.

“I love my neighbors. I love my neighborhood,” said Arana.

His love of traveling safely as a gay man and his love of the Bay Area is why he wanted to be a host on the website. More than one million LGBTQ+ travelers can not only find housing on the site, but also connect with locals to get safety tips and plan trips and activities.

Mattieu Jost, the creator of Mister B&B, came up with the idea after experiencing homophobic harassment when he booked a room at a home in Spain with his partner.

“She really reacted badly and so we decided to leave. And on the way back to the airport, this is how I created Mr. B and B,” said founder Jost. The global traveler and entrepreneur is now living in Paris, France.

The website is getting support from investors and hosts like Arana, who also uses the site to travel himself.

“We have traveled to Norway, the Philippines, Taiwan, Portugal and India,” said Arana.

He admitted traveling can be risky in some states and countries if you are gay.

“There are places where the politics and people are not necessarily aligned. There are people who are welcoming LGBTQ communities,” explained Arana.

He says it’s about finding community in other parts of the world.

“In those places, our people need to be supported. They need to be seen and they also need to see that they need to see us. The world needs to see us that we have families and jobs and are home,” said Arana.

He regularly cooks for the travelers he hosts and makes sure his home is a welcome all year long.

“I like having a flag out. It is home and it’s part of who I am. It is a large part and important to understand,” said Arana.

These Are the Best (and Worst) States for LGBTQ+ Americans to Live

A new report concluded that LGBTQ+ equality continues to decrease across the nation.

The number of non-heterosexual Americans has doubled in a decade, increasing to over seven percent in 2022 . However, the  LGBTQ+ community faces more challenges than ever before, with equality decreasing across the nation, according to a new report by Out Leadership, a global LGBTQ+ business platform. For the past six years, the organization has published an annual State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, measuring each state's record on gay rights and equality.

"With a rapidly changing cultural climate and a political landscape poised to undo two decades of progress toward LGBTQ+ equality, this year's Climate Index provides essential insight into the state of LGBTQ+ equality in the United States," this year's report states, noting that for the second year in a row, the average score of all 50 states has dropped indicating a decrease in LGBTQ+ equality in the country. The main reason for the negative change is the adoption of anti-trans policies by over 20 states.

Another trend the report highlights is the deepening polarization across the nation "as states that excel in LGBTQ+ equality continue to thrive and states that demonstrate hostility to LGBTQ+ rights continue to jeopardize the LGBTQ+ community's ability to live and work," Out Leadership concluded.

So, which states support LGBTQ+ equality the most? New York scored 93.67 out of 100, the highest on the list, followed by Connecticut (93.27), Massachusetts (92), and New Jersey (90). In the regional rankings, Illinois took the lead in the Midwest, Virginia was the winner in the Southeast, Colorado in the West, and New Mexico in the Southwest.

Overall, 16 states increased their scores since last year, with Michigan, Georgia, and Oregon having the most significant upward movement. The report notes that the Great Lakes State, which had an impressive 4.87 increase, implemented a statewide ban on conversion therapy, protecting its LGBTQ+ population.

However, according to The American Civil Liberties Union, hundreds of anti-gay policies and regulations have been introduced in 40 states since the beginning of this year alone.

For the second year in a row, Arkansas had the lowest score of all 50 states (27 out of 100), five percentage points lower than its 2023 score and the lowest score ever received by a state in the six years since Out Leadership started publishing its Index. Louisiana (31.50) and South Carolina (31.90) are in the top three worst states for LGBTQ+ equality.

The Index features five categories, Legal and Nondiscrimination Protections, Youth and Family Support, Political and Religious Attitudes, Health Access and Safety, and Work Environment and Employment, and each accounts for 20 percent of the overall score.

You can see all rankings and read the report's conclusions on outleadership.com .

Expect a record-breaking number of travelers on Fourth of July week: How to avoid traffic

best gay travel app

  • An estimated 70.9 million people will travel for the Fourth of July holiday, a record-breaking number.
  • The most popular domestic destinations are Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, Honolulu and Miami.
  • The worst times to drive for 4th of July week are July 3 and 4 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

If you’re one of the projected record-breaking 70.9 million travelers going on a Fourth of July trip, get ready to pack some patience.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a statement. “We anticipate this July 4 week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Whether you’re going by airplane or car, traveler numbers are hitting historic highs. An estimated 5.74 million people will fly to their Independence Day destination, a 7% increase from 2023. (We can thank domestic airfare being slightly cheaper this year for that.)

This year, 2.8 million more people will travel by car than last year, for a total of 60.6 million travelers. According to AAA partner and rental car company Hertz, cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco are showing the highest rental car demand.

Here’s everything you need to know about Fourth of July travel.

What are the most popular destinations for Fourth of July week?

Many travelers are headed to the coast for their Independence Day trip, with states like Hawaii and Florida topping the list. With the best time for Alaskan cruises in full swing, cities like Seattle, Vancouver and Anchorage are popular among travelers. As expected, beloved European destinations like London and Rome earned spots on the list as well.

Most popular domestic destinations:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Anchorage, Alaska

Most popular international destinations:

  • Vancouver, British Columbia

What are the best times to drive for Fourth of July week?

As is typical with holiday travel, the early bird will catch the worm, which means encountering the least traffic. Drivers should depart on their Independence Day road trips before noon on July 3 and 4. To return home, drivers should leave before 11 a.m. on July 7 and after 7 p.m. on July 8.

What are the worst times to drive for Fourth of July week?

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7, as they return,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a statement. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal.”

On July 3 and 4, drivers should avoid being on the road between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., when traffic will be most congested. On Friday, July 5, the worst traffic will be between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

On Saturday, July 5, the worst traffic for travelers returning home will be between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The worst traffic is expected July 7, so drivers should avoid the road between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

“Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions,” Pishue said.

9 Best Apps for Finding Cheap Flights

The best flight apps help you score a deal with a few swipes on your smartphone.

With the help of technology, you may be able to save by booking at the right time, snagging a mistake fare or flying into a different airport.

Key Takeaways

  • Airfare can be one of the most expensive parts of traveling.
  • Apps make it easy to track trends in fare prices, look for deals and book flights.
  • Some apps are completely free to use while others may charge a fee.
  • While some apps charge a fee, there may be a free version available with limited features.

There’s good news for travelers: airfares dropped 5.9% during the past year as of May 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That means taking that dream vacation may be more attainable now than in the past.

You may be able to save even more by booking at the right time, snagging a mistake fare or flying into a different airport. To find the best deals, you can use an app designed to help people find cheap flights.

The best flight apps offer features that will alert you to price drops, let you search for cheaper travel times or help you find special pricing not found elsewhere.

Try one of these nine discount airfare apps and services that frequent flyers say work for them:

A good flight alert program can simplify the process of finding a deal. These services send emails or notifications whenever there is discounted airfare available to selected destinations, and Going is a favorite source for flight alerts. The company notes that most deals are 40% to 90% off normal prices and says most members save an average of $550 on economy flights.

“(It) is one of the best apps to use when searching for cheap flights,” says Alex Miller, CEO of UpgradedPoints.com. “It can narrow down what city you're located in and then alert you when a qualifying airfare, based on criteria that you set, is found.”

Users can choose from three tiers of service:

Free limited accounts receive alerts about deals on continental U.S. flights.

Premium plans cost $49 a year and include international and domestic economy flights as well as mistake fares and points and miles deals.

Frequent globetrotters may want to spring for the elite plan that provides alerts for economy, business and first-class flights as well as mistake fares from all U.S. airports. It costs $199 per year.

2. Skyscanner

Skyscanner has a free flight app that is compatible with both Apple and Android devices and provides pricing alerts when a good deal becomes available. The app is easy to use and allows you to set alerts for specific dates or routes.

Travelers can also use Skyscanner's calendar and charts to compare hundreds of flights for both international and domestic destinations. The app highlights flights that emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, lets users mix and match flights from different carriers and offers a search option that allows travelers to find the best prices for flights originating from their chosen airports.

When you find a flight you like, Skyscanner will direct you to a third-party booking app to make the purchase. In addition to flights, users can search for hotels and car rentals using Skyscanner.

3. Dollar Flight Club

Dollar Flight Club is similar to Going, but it structures its plans differently.

Free accounts get alerted to deals from one departure airport while premium members can choose four departure airports for deal alerts on domestic and international economy flights. Premium membership costs $69 a year. There is also a Premium Plus+ membership that runs $169 per year and includes premium economy and business class deals as well.

The service says booking a single flight using Dollar Flight Club can provide a return of 10 times your investment and that the average savings on a Premium Plus+ flight deal is more than $700.

4. Google Flights

While not currently available as an app, Google Flights offers a simple online interface that allows you to search for flights to specific airports and then see a calendar view that shows when flights will be cheapest. It also has a price graph that allows you to see pricing trends over time.

“You can plug in your start city and then let Google Flights make suggestions on where to fly from there based upon the cost of airfare,” Miller says. That’s a useful tool for travelers with flexibility.

Once you find the right airfare, you'll need to find and book it directly with the carrier or through a third-party booking service.

The Hopper app comes with a variety of tools that can help you find and lock in the best price. It is free to download and use although some features, such as price freezes and the ability to cancel for any reason, come with a fee. However, its core service is to predict future travel prices, something Hopper says it can do with 95% accuracy.

That’s one reason it’s among the best flight apps, according to Kevin Raposo, founder of KnowTechie. He used it to book a vacation to Saint Lucia and says it couldn’t have been easier. “You can do it all at the push of a button,” he says.

For those just browsing on the app – which is available for Apple and Android devices – Hopper will color code flights using green, yellow and red to indicate which flights are most and least expensive.

Compatible with Android and Apple devices, Kiwi promises its app will provide travelers with exclusive offers and prices. It searches for the best rates from all available airlines to piece together the lowest-priced itinerary.

The free app also offers the opportunity to search for all deals from a specific airport, which can be handy for those who are ready to take a vacation but don't have a particular destination in mind. Within the app, users can get price alerts, access mobile boarding passes and view airport maps.

Kiwi also offers travel hacks that can save money, such as bookings with “hidden cities” and a Nomad tool for those who want to visit multiple cities. What's more, the app offers other travel services such as destination guides and the location of Wi-Fi hotspots.

7. ExpertFlyer

The ExpertFlyer website won’t win any design awards. It looks like something from the early days of the internet and even references now-obsolete Blackberry devices. But frequent flyers say that shouldn’t deter you.

“ExpertFlyer is another great tool, though admittedly it's for the more advanced flyer,” Miller says. “Rather than perform ordinary searches to uncover good airfare deals, you can set alerts and search by specific inventory on flights.”

That means that this service is intended for those who know where, when and with which airline they want to fly. If you have a specific route that you travel frequently, ExpertFlyer can help you find discounted fares.

A free version provides seat alerts while a paid pro subscription, which starts at $4.99 per month, comes with additional features such as the ability to search for awards and upgrades.

Airfare apps aren’t only for those booking vacations. Business travelers and their employers are often searching for a good deal as well. That’s the niche Onriva fills.

“We’ve built a platform to bring everything in one place (so) you don’t have to hop from site to site,” says Onriva founder and CEO Vajid Jafri. “This has never existed before.”

While other apps may make it possible to book from multiple companies, they typically serve as a digital travel agency. With Onriva, all bookings are made directly with an airline or other vendor through the app’s platform, which it says can provide savings of 20%. For added convenience, Onriva also provides customer service.

The app brings together travel options from more than three million suppliers and then uses artificial intelligence to learn user preferences and make recommendations.

Anyone with a business email address can sign up for an Onriva account, but you’ll have to request a demo to get pricing information.

9. Your Favorite Airline’s App

In your search for cheap flights, don’t overlook your favorite airline’s app. Booking direct can sometimes be the best option, according to Sandra McLemore, a travel industry expert and TV host.

“While these (third-party) apps may feel convenient and more user-friendly than other online booking options, buyer beware,” McLemore says. If you buy your tickets through that third-party app, you may find it difficult to receive customer service should any issues arise.

“An airline will send you right back to the app or online booking engine to receive service,” McLemore points out.

Also, by focusing your spending with a specific airline you may find it easier to accumulate frequent flyer miles, which you can redeem for free flights and therefore save more money in the long run.

Imagine having your favorite RV navigation apps that offer suggested routes and help you find state and national parks and public campgrounds along the way. That’s precisely what RV trip-planning apps do. With campground reviews from fellow travelers at hand, every decision becomes more manageable as it is based on real experiences.

A road trip doesn’t need to burn a hole in your pocket. The beauty of these awesome apps lies in their ability to guide users towards free camping sites or cheaper alternatives like public campgrounds compared to private RV parks for RV Camping only. Plus, they keep tabs on gas stations en route, ensuring fuel stops don’t become financial nightmares.

No more worrying about unexpected detours or sudden weather changes affecting your journey. With live updates via GPS-based directions right within these simple yet practical applications, a smooth ride throughout is almost guaranteed, irrespective of where you’re headed next – an overnight parking spot or a new city exploration.  RV-specific GPS is a plus for travelers who must avoid low clearances on overpasses or tight turns.

Last but certainly not least are those mundane maintenance tasks that come part and parcel with the fun-filled RV life pro experience. RV Trip Wizard , among other great apps, provides checklists for routine RV maintenance checks so nothing gets missed while living this exciting lifestyle on wheels.

The best RV travel app for your needs can differ based on what you’re looking for in an application. However, a few applications have become popular for their broad selection of features and user-friendly interfaces.  I’ve checked out three of them and studied reviews for you, so you don’t have to!

We’ll compare three widely-used options that make traveling by RV or car a breeze: RV Life Pro , Togo RV , and RV Trip Wizard .

RV Life Trip Wizard – RV GPS and Campgrounds

A favorite among full-time RVers, RV Life , provides an all-in-one solution for planning your RV trip. It offers RV Safe GPS, which means the best route suggestions tailored to the size and weight of your vehicle, ensuring safe travels no matter where you go.  With this app, you won’t have to worry about your route or the time to arrive at your destination.

This handy app covers everything from finding RV parks and gas stations to locating nearby RV dump sites.  No more worrying about whether you fit under that highway overpass!  RV Life handles that!

RV Trip Wizard isn’t just an RV navigation map, either.  One of the reasons it is much loved among full-time RVers is that it has so many features beyond just the map.  One of the most popular features is the Points of Interest Map which includes over 57,000 points of interest for you to scope out before adding them to your route.

One of my favorite features of this app is that it even helps you keep track of maintenance schedules for your vehicle.  We can all use a little help with that fun chore!

And finally, you can find ideal RV parks and campgrounds as you travel.  With over 20,000 campgrounds in the app and the ability to rank your memberships in travel clubs, you’ll know which park will give you the best value after a quick look into the app.  In addition, it conveniently locates dump sites, gas stations, and prices en route.

RVLife comes with a 7-day trial to give you ample opportunity to decide if it’s the right fit for you.  After seven days, the cost is approximately $60 per year.  A few nights at a lower-cost camping sight will quickly take care of that $60, making this a great value if you travel often enough.

A demo version comes with more limited capabilities for those who need more than seven days to decide if this is the right app.

Next up?   Togo RV !  This handy app receives high praise from fellow RVers.  It not only aids with trip planning but also includes maintenance reminders and checklists, ensuring that you are road ready at all times!

Togo also has an Overnight RV Parking app, so if you love the RV app, you may just love the Overnight Parking app as well.  Take note that Togo RV is not a free app, but it does offer a free 7-day trial, so if you don’t love it, it won’t cost you a penny!

I love that this app provides access to reviews from fellow travelers on various campgrounds, making it easier to choose the right campground for you when you’re busy living out the dream of being a full-time traveler or an “RV life pro.”

Some of the free features included with Togo are  Movile RV Repair Directory, which will help you find someone to repair your RV or car while you travel.  The Tire Finder lets you enter your tire specs and find the best replacements for your budget.  Pre-made RV checklists are available to get you safely on the road without forgetting any vital details!

You can also enter your vehicle specs and receive recall alerts, and maybe my favorite feature and the best part of this app is the Roadpass University, which is excellent for a new RV owner!

Togo RV is an excellent tool with high ratings among travelers.  Of course, besides the above options, it offers a campground search feature, which includes information about state parks and free camping sites throughout North America.

AllStays Camp & RV App

Last but certainly not least is AllStays Camp & RV , known for its comprehensive database covering everything from public campgrounds with RV sites to overnight parking lots for smaller vehicles.  This robust tool becomes indispensable whether one plans to stay at a state park or search out free camping sites and parking lots (Hello Cracker Barrel!) during road trips across the Midwest.

I feel safe in saying that AllStays is worth your time.  This app has been the #1 Selling, #1 Ranked, and #1 Reviewed Camping App for over 144 Months, with 4.5k reviews in the iOS app store and an overall ranking of 4.6 out of 5.

AllStays Camp & RV App is one of my favorite apps because, although it is simple, it is effective.  I love that it allows searches based on specific requirements like pet-friendly sites or overnight parking facilities.

Midwest State Park Adventures makes a great travel companion or gift. Some of the best travel writers in the Midwest collaborated to put this book together, which covers 12 Midwest States and hundreds of state parks.

And I, the Hip Grandma, wrote contributed by writing the Michigan chapter!

You can click on the photo to order on Amazon or click HERE to learn more and order a signed copy directly from me.

After 13 years of use and development, AllStays has the most campgrounds listed (37,000 in the United States and Canada) and includes FREE overnight parking options.  The filters on this app are excellent.  You can filter sites fairly easily by features such as pet-friendly sites, laundry availability, boat launch, toilet styles, swimming pool, and so on!

But my favorite feature of this app is that some of the data is stored on your phone, making it useable even when driving in and out of wifi or service areas.  Nothing is more frustrating than driving out of signal, losing your internet connection, and the ability to search as you travel.

Notice to Android users:  Allstays Camp and RV does not have an app for you.  However, you can open your browser and log in to use the same features, which is a bit of a drawback if you have your heart set on an app. However, it makes this app useable on any device, including your tablet, computer, or laptop!

Consider Your Cost

When considering cost, RV Life Trip Wizard offers a limited-feature free version and a premium subscription. Togo RV comes with an annual fee. Allstays Pro is the least expensive of the three we’ve discussed here at 34.99 per year or 4.99 per month.

Any way you look at it, the ease these apps bring into your car or RV traveling experience often justifies their price tag.

Remember, no single application will meet every need perfectly. So, please look at each app’s features and consider the most important features before purchasing your perfect companion app.

  The Gist:

Awesome RV travel apps like RV Life Trip Wizard, Togo RV, and Allstays Camp & RV Road Maps offer unique features tailored to your road trip needs. From campground searches to maintenance reminders and route planning, these tools simplify the journey. Consider cost and personal preferences when choosing your perfect digital companion.

Add-on Popular RV Travel Apps

Now that we’ve talked about adding a GPS and Trip planning app, let’s talk about a few apps that don’t do it “all” but do their own thing really well! Here are my favorite stand-alone apps that I wouldn’t travel without!

The user-friendly RV Parky app assists in locating RV dump stations and potential roadside attractions.  It’s FREE, making it a great starter app!

Before I travel, and sometimes even after, you’ll find me cruising through TripAdvisor .  You’ll find places to go, things to do, and places to eat and stay in this handy free app.

TripAdvisor is location-specific, so enter your destination and see lists of all of the great things a destination has to offer and honest, up-to-date user reviews from people who have been there!   TripAdvisor is a great way to get genuine reviews from real people before wasting your time and efforts.

When I need a place to stay, and the car or the RV just isn’t going to cut it, I use Hotels.com .  You can search along your route and see prices at a glance, discounted from the walk-in rate.  This app has come in incredibly handy when I need a room at the last minute.

Be aware, though, if you make a reservation through this app and, for some reason, change your mind on arrival, refunds are not easy.  The hotel will immediately tell you to take it up with Hotels.com, and you may wait more than a week for your refund.

This handy little app called Roadside Attractions is my personal favorite app for finding quirky roadside stops!  I have used it for everything from finding a spooky shoe tree on a back country road to finding the EPIC Headquarters, the most fantastic work campus that seems more like a theme park than a business.

I truly love this great app!  It can turn your RV road trip from meh to magnificent! There is a small one-time cost to use the app, but it has been more than worth it for me!

iExit is a nifty little app and just the thing to help you find a bite to eat, a gallon of gas, or a restroom as you travel.  Simply open the iExit app, which will use GPS to locate you on the Interstate, then give you a list of the upcoming exits and what you’ll find there, including fuel prices, truck stops, rest areas, and fast food restaurants!  I love this little app!

If you like to hear the story behind a story, this app is for you. Download the Talking Trail App , and when you are within a specified distance of a Talking Point, the app will notify you. A quick click on the map will give you a narrated story of the landmark you’re visiting. If you are a leisure traveler with time to learn and hear stories, you’ll LOVE Talking Trail.

Tips for Choosing an RV Travel App

Embarking on your next RV trip with the right app can transform your travel experience. Consider what you want when choosing the perfect app to accompany your RV journey.

The first step is recognizing what you need from an RV travel app. Are you seeking a straightforward navigation tool like Google Maps , or do you require more specific features such as finding RV parks, planning safe routes, locating gas stations, and even providing handy checklists? Knowing what’s essential will help streamline your choices.

User reviews and ratings provide invaluable insights into how well each option performs.  I certainly don’t know it all, and although I have used all of these apps, many others have also and may be able to answer your specific questions in a review.  Quickly browsing feedback on platforms like Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store will give you a balanced perspective.

RV apps come in different pricing models: free versions with optional paid upgrades (like Togo RV), full-featured premium ones (such as RV Trip Wizard), and freemiums that offer limited functionalities unless upgraded – select one that fits your budget constraints and ensures value for what you spend.

Of course, I recommend you try different options and compare their features whenever possible. Many of these apps offer free trial periods that will let you get a hands-on feel for their offerings firsthand and commitment-free. This practical exposure helps determine if a particular software ticks all of your boxes effectively, saving you time and effort.

When choosing the best RV travel app, identify your needs first. Consider user reviews and ratings for insight into performance. Analyze features and usability to ensure it caters to all aspects of RV life within your budget. Don’t forget a test drive before committing.

FAQs in Relation to Best Rv Travel App

Absolutely! Apps like Roadtrippers and RV Trip Wizard are explicitly designed to help plan your RV route, including stops at campgrounds and attractions.

Yes, the comprehensive features of RV Trip Wizard, such as custom routing, campground information, and cost estimation, make it a valuable tool for any RVer.

Surely. Hipcamp is similar to Airbnb but focuses on unique camping experiences. It lists thousands of campsites across the US.

You can use travel planning apps like The Dyrt or AllStays that provide details about campgrounds, gas stations, and rest stops, along with user reviews to help you plan your journey efficiently.

Exploring the Midwest in an RV just got easier.  As a matter of fact, it just got easier if you travel in a car, too!  Whichever way you travel, the best RV travel app can transform your travels from stressful to effortless.

Comparing different apps helps you find the perfect match for your needs. And once you choose, mastering its use ensures smooth sailing (or driving).
