‘The Trip to Greece’ Is the Last ‘Trip’ Film. But It Shouldn’t Be (Column)

The Trip to Greece Movie

I’m an unabashed fan of “The Trip” and its three sequels. They’re the British talk-verité road comedies in which Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon , playing heightened versions of their quicksilver acid-tongued middle-aged selves, drive around some lovely European country (England, Italy, Spain, Greece), stopping for lavish lunches at Michelin-star restaurants as they slice and dice each other’s egos with the quippiest of thoughts — a one-upmanship game between frenemies that periodically bursts out into their dueling impersonations of some legendary movie star. (The most hilarious was Michael Caine. They’ve also done indelible takeoffs on Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Sean Connery, Woody Allen and Hugh Grant.)

It’s hard to pinpoint what it is that gives the “Trip” movies their special tang, but the whole rapid-fire competitive banter of Coogan and Brydon, most of which they make up on the spot, reminds me of the razzing prankishness of “A Hard Day’s Night” with a touch of the conversational enchantment of “My Dinner with Andre.” These are comedies to take seriously (though not too seriously). They’re also dramas to take lightly.

And now, it seems, they’re going to be missed.

Popular on Variety

With the release, on May 22, of “The Trip to Greece,” Coogan, Brydon and their director, Michael Winterbottom , have announced that they’re packing it in. There will be no more “Trip” movies — at least, for a good long time. Each of the four films, going back to “The Trip” in 2010, was carved out of a six-episode BBC series (each series, in total, is about one-and-a-half times longer than the film it was whittled down to). To do another movie, they would need, theoretically, to do another series, and that’s not in the cards.

Yet I think that letting go of the films now is a mistake. Sure, you could make a case (as I have) that the “Trip” films are kind of running out of tricks, that we’ve seen Coogan and Brydon do even their mightiest impersonations once too often, and that the wistful grace notes of all-the-world’s-a-stage melancholy that give the series its soul were there from the beginning, so there’s no real point in trying to “deepen” the material. It’s already about as deep as it’s going to get.

“The Trip to Greece,” however, falls way too short of being the grand finale this series deserves. You could say that they’re going out humbly, without fanfare (and without any risk of jumping the shark), and that that’s a good thing. It’s also trés British. But here’s why Coogan and Brydon should consider one more go-round, and here’s a suggestion of what, exactly, I think it should be.

“The Trip to Greece” wasn’t an ending, it was just a stop.

The new movie takes pains to have a dark undercurrent or two, especially after Coogan learns that his father has been taken ill. Yet even this sets up what is less a closing note than a kind of spiritual cliffhanger: What’s Coogan going to do when his vanity comes up against mortality? A great question, but it’s never answered.

For a series that is this fixated on American movie stardom, it needs to get out of its Euro comfort zone.

The “Trip” films are epicurean buddy-movie travelogues that might have been bankrolled by the European tourism industry. Each one, among other things, is a tossed-off advertisement for the glories of landscape, cuisine, history. The documentary shots of food being prepared in restaurant kitchens — we tend to see a dish tossed in a smoking pan just before it’s served to our heroes — are like privileged glimpses of ancient trade secrets. It’s all very luscious and Continental. So where would they go next — to France? Sweden? Germany? Ireland? No way. That formula really is spent. As a result, I think it’s finally time that Coogan and Brydon journeyed to the belly of the beast. The fifth and final “Trip” film should be….

“The Trip to California.” The two would start in the Pacific Northwest, drive down through San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway, and end up — of course — in Los Angeles, where they can finally confront the place that’s been the source of so many of their dreams.

They need to try out some radical new impressions.

In every “Trip” sequel, there are golden oldies — a touch of Pacino, a mumbled snippet of Tom Hardy — and at least one great new one, like the Dustin Hoffman-and-Laurence-Olivier-in-“Marathon-Man” set piece that’s the funniest sequence in “The Trip to Greece.” Yet as much as I adore these flashbacks to the ’70s, there’s a whole new world out there waiting to be mimicked into oblivion, and these are the guys to do it, even if Coogan now claims he couldn’t care less about being an impressionist. (Maybe so, but he’s so great at it that that’s just his version of every comedian wanting to play Hamlet.) The two could do Brad Pitt, John Travolta, Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Quentin Tarantino…the sky of empathetic ridicule is the limit. “The Trip to California” should be the Coogan-and-Brydon celebrity roast to end all celebrity roasts.

They need face-to-face encounters with one or two of their prime targets.

This may sound like it edges into shark-jumping terrain, but how perfect would it be if, in the final “Trip” film, they actually ran into Michael Caine — and wound up conducting a three-way Caine dialogue with him? Or if they did the same thing with Pacino? The last “Trip” film should arrive at a delirious funhouse-mirror satirical high, leaving us with a sensation of deliverance. A scene like that would do that trick.

The film should be a light-handed meditation on comedy and acting.

We’ve heard enough, in bits and pieces, about Coogan and Brydon’s personal lives to kind of know who they are. But what is it that drives them, in their hidden hearts, as actor-comedians who emerged from a culture — England’s — where acting is part of the spiritual-behavioral lifeblood? In “The Trip to California,” their six-day trip should culminate in a joint appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that’s as rivetingly funny and drop-dead revealing, in its way, as the talk-show climax of “Joker.” (They could meet Michael Caine there!) All of which is to say…

“The Trip to California” should be a heady celebration of showbiz.

Where, in Hollywood, does fantasy end and reality begin? And where is that line in these two men’s souls, as they play themselves in a series of movies where every moment is “real” and every moment is a performance? “The Trip to California” should end the series by going out with a big bang of meta hilarity. We, along with Coogan and Brydon, deserve nothing less.

The Hull Story

The Last Trip: Former trawlermen and MPs star in new film

They were key cabinet members in Tony Blair’s Labour government.

Now former MPs John Prescott and Alan Johnson are set to hit the big screen as unlikely film stars.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Mr Prescott plays himself in new comedy The Last Trip about a crew of retired deep-sea fishermen who steal a trawler for one final adventure.

Ex-Home Secretary and former postal workers union leader Mr Johnson turns the clock back to play a postman unwittingly delivering trawler parts to the gang as they bring their rusting old ship back to life.

He said: “It was great fun to be a postman again after all these years.

“As well as being a comedy, the film is also a tribute to generations of courageous trawler men who sailed from Hull to fish in the freezing waters of Arctic but sadly never returned to their home port.”

It’s estimated around 6,000 men from Hull died over the years when the city was home to the world’s largest deep-water fishing fleet.

Other well-known faces appearing in the film include former Archbishop of York John Sentamu in a cameo role, while ex-UKIP MEP Mike Hookem plays a pub landlord.

He lost his brother in what became known as the Triple Trawler Tragedy in 1968 when 58 crew members perished after three Hull ships were lost in storm-lashed seas off Iceland.

He said: “One of the greatest pains for my mother was that she had nowhere to go to grieve. I am sure many of the families who lost loved ones still feel the same today.”

TRIBUTE: The Last Trip stars real former trawlermen

TRIBUTE: The Last Trip stars real former trawlermen

The stars of the film are real-life retired Hull trawlermen in their first ever acting roles.

They include ex-trawler skipper Mason Redfearn, former chairman of the Hull branch of the British Fishermen’s Association Ron Bateman, leading members of the Hull Bullnose Heritage Group Ray Coles and Ray Hawker, and the late Stan Fenton, who sadly died recently.

Despite having no previous acting experience between them, all five were chosen to play old crewmates united for a last trip to sea.

The film is the brainchild of writer and director Andrew Fenton.

A trawlerman’s son, he persuaded his late father to join the film’s fictional crew.

He said: “Sadly, my Dad died recently but along with his shipmates in the film he really threw himself into the role and was able to achieve something he never did while he was on the trawlers – sailing under the Humber Bridge.

“I wanted to make a film using ordinary people rather than actors because it’s a story about real people. Luckily, I was very fortunate that the likes of John Prescott and Alan Johnson agreed to appear in it too.

“I also wanted to make a comedy to make people laugh even though there’s also a serious message in there about the importance Hull’s fishing industry and how a lot of it has largely been forgotten.”

He said the veteran trawlermen had been a joy to work with.

“At first, some of them took a bit of persuading but eventually the guys took to it like ducks to water,” said Mr Fenton.

SETTING: St Andrew’s Dock, Hull

SETTING: St Andrew’s Dock, Hull

“Some of the filming was pretty hard and literally took all day at times but they never complained, they just got on with it.”

Mr Bateman, who campaigned alongside Mr Johnson to secure belated compensation for fishermen following the Cod Wars and the collapse of the deep-water industry, said: “None of us had done anything like this before but Andrew was very encouraging and it was a great experience.

“Once you have been fishing on a trawler in the middle of an Arctic storm, you can pretty much turn your hand to anything.”

The independent film is the first feature-length work by Mr Fenton’s Northern Films company, which is based in Priory Park in west Hull.

Shooting started four years ago and alongside the traditional filming and acting, special computer-generated scenes showing Hull’s St Andrew’s Dock and Hessle Road in its fishing heyday have also been created for some scenes.

A scheduled release date last year was postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic but it’s hoped the film will be screened in selected Odeon cinemas later this year.

“It’s mostly an upbeat comedy but there are some poignant moments too. Hopefully, it will provide a good night’s entertainment,” said Mr Fenton.

“It was written locally, it was produced locally and recorded locally so the key factor is everyone in the film has either got some connection with the fishing industry or they’re just from the local area.

In the run-up to the film’s cinematic release, Northern Films will also be releasing a series of short documentaries on its social media sites over the next few months looking at different aspects of the fishing industry.

Oscars: Sweden Submits Hit Doc ‘The Last Journey' For Best International Feature Film

Sweden has selected The Last Journey as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

The documentary by popular Swedish TV hosts and journalists Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson, known at home as Filip och Fredrik, sees the duo take Hammar's father Lars on a road trip to France.

Lars has recently retired after 40 years as a French teacher but instead of a “third age” of travel, wine and experiences with his wife, he becomes passive and tired. By making the same road trip that the family used to make when Filip was a child, and staging some of life’s most beautiful moments, they hope to rekindle Lars’ spark.

The doc is produced by Nexiko in co-production with Nordisk Film Distribution, RMV Film and collaboration with SVT.

The work has proven a hit at the Swedish box office this year, drawing more than 400,000 spectators for Nordisk Film since its release in Sweden on March 1, to make it the highest grossing documentary in the country ever.

The Swedish Film Institute announced the decision at a press conference in Stockholm on Thursday in the presence of Wikingsson and the producers Lars Beckung and Petra Måhl at Nexiko.

"We are floored, overjoyed and grateful to first and foremost Filip's parents Lars and Tiina, everyone who worked on the film, and of course everyone who saw the film, At the same time, we are phenomenally aware of what an extremely narrow needle’s eye we must now try to fight our way through," said Wikingsson.

Beyond this country submission, Sweden has two other directors in the Best International Feature Film category: Tia Kouvo directs Finland’s submission,  Family Time , and Magnus von Horn directs Denmark’s submission,  The Girl with the Needle . Both films are produced with funding from the Swedish Film Institute.

Sweden has won the Best International Feature Film Oscar four times with The Virgin Spring (1960),Through a Glass Darkly (1961) Fanny and Alexander (1983) Pelle the Conqueror (1988), and been nominated 13 times in the category, last time for Ruben Östlund’s The Square in 2017. Ostlund’s last film Triangle of Sadness was nominated outside of the category in 2023 for best director and screenplay.

Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage Plan the Road Trip Heist of a Lifetime in First 'Brothers' Trailer

Prime Video is gearing up for a road trip with Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage with the official trailer for their new buddy comedy, Brothers . Hailing from Palm Springs breakout director Max Barbakow , the new movie pairs the gruff, Oscar-nominated Avengers: Endgame and Outer Range star with the four-time Game of Thrones Emmy winner for a chaotic life-changing journey together to steal their last big score. Just like their appearances, however, the two could not be more dissimilar, setting the twins up for some trouble as they confront their overbearing mother, the police, and their broken bond.

Brothers is about family at its heart, as it follows the younger, meeker brother Moke (Brolin), an ex-con trying to leave the criminal life behind. He re-encounters his whirlwind twin Jady (Dinklage), who reels him back in with the promise of a heist of a lifetime and re-opens some old wounds in the process. Though the two initially seem like they won't survive the road trip together without killing each other, they'll work throughout the film to mend the relationship they once had and try to live like a somewhat normal family. With their mother Cath ( Glenn Close ) joining in the journey and taking part in their hijinks, they have a chance to explore the hierarchy of their family dynamic and heal some old wounds. It's just a matter of whether they'll end their journey in prison or not.

In addition to Brolin, Dinklage, and Close, Barbakow's action comedy brings together some big-name Hollywood talent for the supporting cast. Best Actor winner Brendan Fraser joins as a police officer named Farful, as seen in the first look images , gives Jady a tough time while Taylour Paige reunites with her The Toxic Avenger remake co-star Dinklage . Rounding out the call sheet are legendary character actor M. Emmet Walsh and Yellowstone alum Jennifer Landon .

Who Else Is Working on 'Brothers'?

In a previous interview for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts with Collider's Steve Weintrau b , Dinklage revealed that the origin of Brothers stemmed back to a remark a friend of Brolin's made to him about the similar size of their heads . The joke became a full-fledged story with help from Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen . Macon Blair , who directed Dinklage and Paige in The Toxic Avenger and recently co-starred with him in the dark western The Thicket , penned the screenplay and served as an executive producer with Trish Stanard . Both Dinklage and Brolin also served as producers with Andrew Lazar and David Ginsberg .

Brothers will enjoy a brief theatrical run starting October 10 before hitting Prime Video on October 17. Check out the trailer in the player above.
