Here's Matchbox 20's 2023 tour setlist in Phoenix, from 'Push' to 'Don't Get Me Wrong'

The Slow Dreams Tour brought Matchbox Twenty to Phoenix for first time since 2017’s A Brief History of Everything Tour marking the 20th anniversary of their 10-times-platinum debut, "Yourself or Someone Like You."

And this time, that brief history includes their first new album in 11 years, the much anticipated "Where the Light Goes."

They set the tone for their performance with "Friends," the song that opens “Where the Light Goes,” and made their way through five selections from the album by the time their set was through, including the singles “Wild Dogs (Running in a Slow Dream)” and “Don’t Get Me Wrong.”

But that still left time for the hits, including all five singles from “Yourself or Someone Like You.”

Rob Thomas spoke to The Arizona Republic about how it feels to sing a song like “Push” or “3AM” nearly 30 years after recording them.

“I'm OK if I never heard those songs ever again,” he says. “But I'm OK with playing them every night.

"Like, there's a living, breathing energy we're sharing with everybody through these songs that have just kind of been around in their life for 27 years. There's no other way for us to look at it other than it's like a member of your family. It doesn't matter whether you like their politics or their conversation at dinner, they're in the (expletive) family."

Overall, great concert. Matt Nathanson drew the audience in quickly and kept their attention. Both performers gave a great tribute to Tom Petty which was well done. Hearing the diverse selection on songs over the last few decade from Matchbox 20 gave something to everyone. Thanks for keeping the price affordable.

What a great show!! Super fun. The band was so energetic and you could tell they were having fun. Rob Thomas was stellar. He used the entire stage during the whole show. He is definitely a seasoned entertainer. I couldn't believe how much energy he had! Would definitely recommend and would see them again!

Show was phenomenal! I had a great time and didn't leave my spot the entire time! Had one of the best concert nights ever! Thank you for giving us a great show still after all these years!

Matchbox Twenty Profile

Matchbox Twenty is a rock band from Orlando, Florida. The band was formed in 1995 and consists of lead vocalist Rob Thomas, guitarist Kyle Cook, bassist Brian Yale, and drummer Paul Doucette. They have released several successful albums throughout their career, including “Yourself or Someone Like You” and “Mad Season.”

Matchbox Twenty’s debut album, “Yourself or Someone Like You,” was released in 1996 and was a commercial success. The album spawned several hit singles, including “Push,” “3AM,” and “Real World.” It has since been certified 12 times platinum by the RIAA.

The band’s second album, “Mad Season,” was released in 2000 and also achieved commercial success. It featured hit singles such as “Bent” and “If You’re Gone.” In 2003, the band released their third album, “More Than You Think You Are,” which featured the hit single “Unwell.”

Matchbox Twenty has also collaborated with other artists throughout their career, including Santana on the hit song “Smooth” and Rob Thomas on the song “Lonely No More.” In addition to their music career, the band has also been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including the fight against cancer and support for mental health initiatives.

In 2022, Matchbox Twenty returned after the pandemic and performed over 50 shows across North America, with special guests The Wallflowers. In 2023, the group returned with a new album and another headlining tour.

Thankfully, one of them will be in New Jersey.

On Thursday, June 27, Rob Thomas and co. will bring their post-grunge alt-rock to Newark’s Prudential Center along with special guest Andy Grammer .

And, yes, based on our findings, they play the hits. At a recent gig in New Zealand, the band performed “How Far We’ve Come,” “3 AM,” “Unwell,” “Push,” “Bright Lights” and cuts from their excellent 2023 album “Where The Light Goes” according to Set List FM .

Matchbox Twenty new music

This past year, Rob Thomas and his backing band dropped their fifth studio album  “Where The Light Goes.”

Coming in at a tight 45 minutes, the band veers away from the straightforward power pop they’ve become known for.

Instead, Matchbox Twenty embraces the orchestral, twinkling pianos, afro beats, and duets.

The end result is something unlike anything they’ve released before.
