The family now produces wine on 150 acres across three estate vineyards and is run by owner and winemaker David Parish. He spent two decades designing and building vineyard trellising through California’s iconic wine regions, however, he fell in love with the Central Coast. While you’re in St. Helena, be sure to also stop by Beringer Vineyards , renowned as one of California’s oldest continually operating wineries. Its history began in 1868 when founder Jacob Beringer sailed from his home in Mainz, Germany to the United States , enticed by the opportunities of California’s fertile lands. Jacob and his brother Frederick purchased 215 acres of land in Napa Valley in 1875, next door to the equally iconic Charles Krug winery. 

This land became the Beringer estate and has been the site of many firsts in the wine industry. Beringer was among the first to use hand-dug caves and cellars and was also the first to give public tours in 1934, starting the beloved tradition of Napa Valley wine tours. 4. Charles Krug Winery

Head next door to Charles Krug Winery and you’ll find even more centuries-old Napa Valley wine history. Established in 1861by Prussian immigrant Charles Krug, this winery is considered to be the very first winery in the Napa Valley. In 1943, the famous Mondavi Family purchased Charles Krug Winery and have run this iconic estate for over 75 years and four generations. 

It now spans over 500 pristine acres and has been producing award-winning wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style wines, for over 160 years. 5. Raymond Vineyards

The history of this legendary family-owned vineyard goes back to 1933 when the pioneering Raymond family arrived in Napa Valley. They became connected to the esteemed Beringer family through marriage in 1936 and wine-making royalty was born. Roy Raymond worked as a winemaker for Beringer until 1970 when he and his two sons established their own 90-acre estate in Rutherford. After producing their first commercial wine in 1974, Raymond Vineyards shot to success with high-quality wines including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and more. 

The winery has since transitioned to organic and biodynamic farming practices and has become a Napa Valley icon. Founded in 1986, the winery has been producing world-class wines for over 35 years. They still use many old-world techniques, like the rare Coquard press, one of very few in the US. So you know you’re sipping something very special. 

The winery is famed for its portfolio of world-class sparkling wines, including Chardonnay blends and single-vineyard Pinot Noir. But what to try first? Their very first wine – the Vintage Brut sparkling – is arguably their best wine and is only available at the winery… So be sure to get your hands on it! 7. MacRostie Winery and Vineyards

While you’re in the Healdsburg area, don’t miss MacRostie Winery and Vineyards. 8. Frog’s Leap Winery

Back over in Rutherford in Napa Valley, you can’t go wrong with vino at Frog’s Leap Winery . Established by the winemaking pioneer, John Williams, this is truly one of the best wineries in California. John arrived in Napa Valley in the early ‘70s and worked at legendary wineries such as Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Spring Mountain Vineyard before establishing Frog’s Leap Winery in 1981.

Best Winery Tours and Tasting in California!

Master Sommelier David Glancy is regularly asked what wineries and wine tours are the best to visit in California. With over 3,800 in the state and American Viticultural Areas  (AVAs) in 43 of the state's 58 counties it can be hard to choose. Below are his picks for Napa and Sonoma with other regions to be discussed in future weeks. Just these two counties have over 900 wineries between them so it's still a challenge to narrow it down. These are his selections based on the winery visit experience. There are many wines that he loves but did not list either because the do not allow public visits or he just hasn't visited them yet. 

Napa – Know Before You Go

Napa Valley - Right Down the Middle

Here are my picks for wineries that are open to the public everyday with no appointment along highway 29 South to North from Yountville to St. Helena.

• Chandon They are one of the first wineries you reach heading into the valley and it's always nice to start with bubbles. The tour teaches guests all about sparkling wine production and you can enjoy your favorite bottle relaxing on the lawn.
• Robert Mondavi Robert Mondavi was one of the most important figures post-prohibition in shaping today's Napa Valley as a global wine center. The tour is educational and they pour a wide variety of wines.
• Beaulieu Vineyards Smack in the center of the valley, the tasting ranges from value  varietal wines  to the always amazing George de la Tour Reserve Cabernet.
• Hall This is a relative newcomer with a modern, splashy tasting facility and some crisp Sauvignon Blanc and big, rich Cabernet.

Napa Valley - Off the Beaten Path

All of these wineries require an appointment but are definitely worth a little advanced planning. They are also quite far apart but there are clusters of wineries near them to create a regional tour.

• Pride Mountain Pride Mountain straddles the county line between Spring Mountain in Napa and Fountaingrove in Sonoma. It is a breathtaking spot atop the Mayacamas Mountain Range with some great Cab and Merlot. Some of their neighbors include Barnett, Schweiger and Cain.
• Schramsberg / J. Davies Schramsberg is one of the best sparkling wine producers in the state and have also converted most of their Diamond Mountain vineyards to Cabernet bottled as J. Davies. Some of their neighbors between St. Helena and Calistoga include Stony Hill and Von Strasser.
• Viader This quiet tasting room is just below Howell Mountain between Deer Park and Angwin. They specialize in Cabernet Franc and Bordeaux style blends. Some of their neighbors include Arkenstone, Cade and Ladera.
• Quintessa This is a magnificent winery cave, beautiful grounds and one of the best Bordeaux style blends in all of California. They are easy to find on the Silverado Trail just outside of Rutherford. Some of their neighbors include Mumm and Joseph Phelps.

Sonoma – Know Before You Go

Sonoma - Dry Creek Valley

Dry Creek Valley is just northwest of Healdsburg and has many wineries.

• A. Rafanelli The tasting room is rustic but they consistently produce beautiful Zinfandel and Cabernet.
• Lambert Bridge Merlot is on the decline in Sonoma but Lambert Bridge continues to make solid Merlot and Cabernet.
• Quivira They make great Zinfandel but their benchmark is the Fig Tree Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc.
• Dry Creek Vineyard They have a simple tasting room fitting the region and a wide array of wines from Chenin Blanc to Cabernet but they make some of the more age-worthy Zinfandel around.
• Mauritson Their most exciting wines come from their Rockpile vineyards but the tasting room and many of their other vines are in Dry Creek.

Sonoma - Russian River Valley

Russian River is just south of Healdsburg and also has a large number of premium wineries.

• J Vineyards J is a unique tasting experience giving food an equal role in their many tasting flight options.
• Iron Horse Iron Horse is a pioneer in the Green Valley, the coldest portion of Russian River. Their sparkling wines are wonderful and it is delightful to sit in the gazebo in middle of the vines enjoying the serenity of their remote location

Lesley Quinlan

A native of Sonoma, and Captain Steve’s daughter, Lesley grew up in the wine country. In  college she was a four time All American in professional basketball, competing in Germany, New Zealand, and Portugal. Lesley joined the family business after a career in the food service industry with wine country establishments. Being very familiar with local wineries she would recommend wines to clients to enjoy with their meals.

Lance Ruttledge

After a 20 year career in law enforcement, Lance changed directions and has been in wine  tours for over 23 years. Having lived in the area for many years he was familiar with the wineries in the valleys. He is also a member of the Napa Valley Tour Guide Guild, a group of knowledgeable wine specialists that are “step-on” bus guides hired for corporate events and by large tour companies. After all these years he still loves what he is doing.

Dan Roseland

Dan had a 50 year career with General Motors in Detroit and owned a Chevrolet dealership  for 19 of those years. Dan was always a “wine guy” drinking wine among the many Detroit beer drinkers. He moved to Sonoma after retirement in 2006. Dan has known Steve and Jean for 18 years and started hosting wine tours for them. He credits Steve and Jean for teaching him about the industry, the wine making process and the wineries.

David Quist

David had a 35 year career in the capital medical equipment industry, “capital” meaning   equipment starting at $100,000 or more, and retired as Vice President of a global capital equipment company. Throughout his career he learned about wines while entertaining doctors, as they would order the wines with dinners. Through his studies, David’s personal home wine cellar peaked at 750 bottles. With his knowledge of wine, David began hosting wine tours for several predominant wine tour companies in the Valley. He now has over 11 years creating and hosting private wine tours.

Tommy Sturtevant

Tommy is Jean’s son and he had a career in the military and as a police officer in Portland,  Oregon. In 2017 he moved back to Sonoma to help his parents with the wine tour business. He is currently in training working for his Sommelier level 2 certification. He interned at Cakebread Cellars and A Rafanelli Winery for several years. Tommy also works for Jam Cellars and hosts wine tours.

Mike Zimmerman

Mike is a native of San Francisco with family roots in New Orleans. He had a career in  information technology and when his “tech job” moved to India in 2009, he decided to forsake Mumbai and remain in Napa. Looking for a more stress free career Mike turned to the wine tour industry in 2010, and began working for several top wine tour companies, creating itineraries for clients and hosting wine tours in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. He has developed a personal relationship with many of the winery owners and winemakers.

Tom Griffith

Tom had a 37 year career in marketing and advertising, owning a full service advertising  agency for 20 years. He is also a professional chef and owned a catering company for 25 years. Today Tom has almost 20 years of experience conducting customized wine tours. He has been a judge and panel member judging professional wine competitions. He is an author and instructor teaching classes in proper wine tasting techniques. He has authored the Simplified Wine Tasting Kit, and the Insider’s Guide to Napa Wineries, and is currently working on the Insider’s Guide to Sonoma Wineries, and the second edition of the Napa guide.

Jean DuBois

Jean is a native of Maine where she got her degree in business management. She went on to owning a boutique store on the main street of her hometown while having a full-time career in accounting and operations. While visiting Sonoma, Jean went on a wine tour hosted by Steve. They hit it off and several months later, Jean moved to Sonoma and became Vice President of Operations for a high-technology company. Eventually, they were married and founded Ultimate Wine Tours together in 2014. Today, when you contact us you will be speaking directly with Jean. She creates the itinerary for you based on your preferences for wines. You will have Jean’s personal cell phone number so you can contact her directly.

Steve DuBois

Steve’s career in the restaurant industry  including being a partner 11 fast food restaurants and Stim’s BBQ and Catering, which he made very successful for 11 years. It came time for a new direction in life and Steve pursued an education in wines, finishing in the top of the class. He then began doing wine tours for local wine tour companies in 2010, where he met and formed personal relationship with the winery owners and winemakers. With his business background it was a natural transition to own a wine tour company and he founded Ultimate Wine Tours in 2014. Steve’s philosophy is to have fun in whatever you are doing, and it has been said that he “has a Ph.D. in fun.”

Bryan was an excellent tour guide! He brought us around to all the vineyards and took amazing photos of my wife and I! He is very knowledgeable about the history of all the vineyards and gave us a run down of the history of Temecula! 10/10 would recommend Bryan for your guide!

THIS COMPANY IS FRAUDULENT AND WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND GIVE YOU NOTHING. Just the facts: Wanted to book the tour for my brother in law's very special, 50th bday. Called them, no one answered the phone Found their company on groupon, bought the deal (close to $500!!!). Made an inquiry on their website, no response. Tried calling again, nothing. Direct messaged on IG, finally a response! They said someone would be in touch, nothing. Messaged them again, MACIE finally replied via text. She confirmed our date, and I even got a confirmation email! 2 days before our 'confirmed' date, Macie texts me that the bikes are to be maintenanced that very same day! obviously, im upset. This was the highlight for our trip and our main reason for going to Temecula to celebrate this special, 50th bday. She promises me a full refund. IT NEVER COMES. I contact groupon, they refuse to refund since the company has already eaten the money. I paid for a service, which was never received. I never even had a chance to try to receive this service. not only that, there was beyond horrendous service. will be reporting to the BBB also until they repay the $500 they stole from me.

I bought the wine tour for two about a year ago but I didn't end up using it then. Fast forward to February of 2023, and it's my partner and my anniversary. We scheduled the tour which was pretty simple via phone. They booked us for 10am instead of 1pm. I didn't realize this until afterwards. I didn't call back to switch it. Just was hoping it wasn't too cold! The whole experience was 100% percent worth it!!! Hunter was our guide and he took us to two different wineries. We went to Somerset winery and Bella vista winery. Bella vista has arguably the best views in Temecula (you can see big bear mountain from here, snow capped and everything!) Somerset has a lovey causal ambiance which is my favorite and a lovely fireplace to sit by on chillier days. The whole experience was absolutely worth it and so unique! I'd highly recommend that you try it out. The tour gives you neat information about Temecula and it's history of wine and the ride from winery to winery is lovely. We spent about 45 minutes at each winery which was plenty!

I'd like to start by saying I would hands down give the drivers and our wine tasting experience 5 stars. All drivers were absolutely incredible. Great personalities, fun to hang with, overall good guys! The wine tour- amazing! However, with the customer service I received over the last few months, AS WELL as the day of, I can not possibly recommend this company to anyone else. And it's only right for me to share my experience with others. This really saddens me, because I used this company in January of this year, with just one other friend (needing only one bike) and fell in love with the experience so much, that we just returned with 16 girls. That's right- I had SIXTEEN girls on a wine tour this last week. And we are a FUN BUNCH, let me tell ya!!! Also very low maintenance. (All I ask for is communication). I originally had 12 girls, but as of about 2 months ago, it increased. Little by little. I COULD NOT for the life of me get a hold of a human being to update my reservation. I called and called and left message after message. I finally found a different phone number, simply by reviewing the photos from our first wine tour- the number on the bike we rode- I finally got a promising voicemail recording at least. After about a week of trying to get a hold of someone, we finally got Macy. I now had Macy's direct phone number and was able to text her. She was so helpful in the beginning. She helped with our Groupon purchase and I really felt good about our communication at the time. But she made quite a few empty promises. She mentioned she would send over a list of wineries we could possibly choose from- never happened. In fact we ended up doing the exact tour I did earlier this year (which is fine, but would have been fun to have the option to have a new experience). She also confirmed we had 8 bikes earlier in the week. Anyways- here we are about 5 days prior to our tour and I'm texting and calling and texting and calling. No response. (See photos). I was very clear that I wanted 2 people per bike, for everyone to be in a side car. I needed 8 bikes for the 16 of us. She confirmed that that's what they had down. Day of: they pull up with SIX BIKES. I call immediately. Nothing. She texts that she's on the other line. (Never tried calling me). Not even to this day. I immediately mentioned that we only have six bikes, when I asked for 8. Macy: "to my knowledge they were prepared for you. Not sure what had happened on their end. I had noted that you didn't want to 3up (3 people one bike) I hope you guys have a great time regardless. " That was the last I heard from her until I contacted her today about still being upset and wanting an explanation. She placed blame on someone else (not sure who) "on their end"???? With absolutely zero options to fix the problem or even a follow up to see how our tour turned out. Today we texted back and forth, until she just didn't respond anymore. Due to having less bikes, we had two girls that needed to ride behind a driver. Which sadly resulted in one of my friends burning her leg on an exhaust. (See photo). This is honestly such an incredible experience, being able to enjoy the beautiful scenery with great company of your friends... And with great tour guides. We continued to make the best of it, as we do. But I am just so disappointed with the lack of empathy and customer service for a group my size. I would expect them to really want to make it special for us, to be sure we shared our photos and videos and experience in a positive light. I wish I could speak highly of every bit of this experience, but sadly I can not. I just needed to inform people before they go and spend a pretty penny on this tour just to have communication issues and frustration all throughout.

The burn the following week

Four of us went on a bike tour to celebrate my birthday and it was an AMAZING experience! This is the third time we use Sidecar Tours and every driver we have is professional and makes our tour one to remember! This time we had Bryan and Caleb as our drivers. They were knowledgeable with the area, stopping along the way to tell us more about the great vineyards that Temecula has. Bryan had fun facts of people that live in the area and we even got to see some longhorns along the way! Since it wasn't our first time on this tour, Bryan made sure he checked with us first to see if we wanted to go to different wineries. He ensured we had reservations and the customer service received by both Bryan and Caleb was top notch!

So extremely disappointed, I purchased the Groupon Temecula wine tour as a gift for my mother's birthday. I called, emailed and texted every contact and number provided through the website as well as from Groupon and never got through to anyone. No return calls after half a dozen messages left trying to book the appointment over a couple of months. Finally the Groupon expired and I still wanted to at least put the money towards the tour to give the gift for my Mom but I still was unable to get through to anyone. Groupon refused to refund me the $200. I contested with my bank and they also declined reimbursement. Could have been a really cool experience if there was any professionalism or actual people to respond and take my business. Thanks for costing me $200 for nothing, enjoy my money.

Had an excellent wine tour experience with Vincent this past weekend. My wife and I celebrated our 3rd Wedding Anniversary and I thought this would be a nice little surprise getaway. Vincent was very knowledgeable of the area, extremely friendly, and had the perfect blend of quirkiness (tidbits about the bikes, funny little side comments, etc.) to make the experience that much more enjoyable.
