Auckland Cruise Port Guide to Top Tours and Free Activities

Holland America Oosterdam at the Auckland cruise port, seen from the water.

Welcome to Auckland, our home city. When your ship docks at Auckland cruise port, you’ll find yourself in the heart of New Zealand’s largest and most vibrant city. Not only do we live here, but as avid cruisers, we have cruised in and out of this port many times and picked up friends who’ve visited for just a day.

With just one day in Auckland, it can be challenging to decide what to see and do. Whether you prefer organised Auckland shore excursions or exploring on your own, the city offers a diverse range of attractions.

From the iconic Sky Tower to the bustling waterfront, there is plenty to experience. If Auckland is the starting or ending point of your cruise, we recommend adding a few days to enjoy more of the city.

We love sharing our city! Below, we guide you through the best ways to experience Auckland in one day.

Map of Auckland cruise port highlights and dock location

Cruising into Auckland is easy. The ships typically dock right in town at either dock at Princess Wharf (Auckland Cruise Ship Terminal) or the very nearby Queens Wharf (Auckland Main Cruise Dock). Either option makes it easy to walk off and enjoy my city!

Check the wharf schedule to see where your ship will arrive and how long you will be in Auckland.

Tour or DIY: What is the best way to enjoy the Auckland cruise port?

The answer to this depends on what you want to see, and whether or not you think a guide is worth the cost. We go into more detail on the advantages and disadvantages of shore options here .

That aside, Auckland is an easy port to walk off and explore on your own, but you will see less and miss out on the commentary. A short walk will take you to the Maritime Museum , Queen Street , or the Sky Tower , and we detailed this and more below.

What are the must-sees from the Auckland cruise port

Inside one of the greenhouses in Auckland Domain Wintergardens, Auckland New Zealand

Trying to see Auckland in a day is impossible, as with nearly every port we have ever visited. However, with a cruise, that’s usually all you get.

Therefore, if I had only one day in Auckland, I would try to get a taste of the city, and include as many as possible from our must-do Auckland list :

  • Enjoy one of the many panoramic views of Auckland harbour In our opinion, the best places to do this are Mount Eden (huge 50m deep crater and Auckland’s highest natural point), North Head (stunning skyline from across the bay, plus cannons, tunnels and military buildings), Bastion Point (historic site overlooking Mission Bay and lots of islands), or from the observation deck of the Sky Tower Although it’s the tallest free-standing tower in the Southern hemisphere if you are well-travelled, it may not seem that tall.
  • Visit a museum or the Wintergardens There are plenty of great museums in Auckland . A few favourites are the Auckland War Memorial Museum (also called Auckland Museum , it is home to the largest collection of Maori artefacts in the world), Maritime Museum (shares the story of the Polynesian immigration), SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s aquarium (marine life and Antarctic penguins), and Wintergardens (stunning living museum featuring glass houses and a fernery).
  • Enjoy some of the city’s open space Take a walk along the waterfront, discover Cornwall Park , or take a ferry out to one of the smaller islands.
  • Head to the west coast for black sand beaches and the rainforest Just an hour to the west of the CBD, the west coast is known for its black sand surf beaches along the edge of a sub-tropical rainforest. It won’t take long to know why it’s called the wild west coast . Our two favourite beaches are Piha and Muriwai .
  • Discover our uniqueness So many one-offs here – take a walk down Queen Street and know that the dirty stream it once was is still under there or visit Holy Trinity Cathedral , the world’s only example of Pacific Gothic architectural style.

Our recommended itinerary to enjoy the Auckland cruise port

Let’s put this all together. If you are energetic and happy to do some exploration on your own (it’s easy to do in our city), we recommend splitting up your day. Spend half of your time on one of the Auckland shore excursions, and the other half on your own.

Spend half your one day in Auckland on a tour

Bastion Point

Join a half-day highlights tour that includes at least one viewpoint, one volcano (Mt Eden covers both of these in one visit), and a few of the other places from above that interest you.

Based on our personal experience, the tour descriptions, and the reviews, we picked what we believe are the top three half-day independent tours. All of these pick up at the dock and mention that they are suitable for cruise passengers.

Also, all three are small group tours so you get a bit of individual attention, something that is often lacking on the more expensive tour options offered by your cruise ship.

Wintergardens

Cornwall Park

Bastion Point

City highlights (3-4 hours)

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Sightseeing tour (6 hours)

DIY – Explore the second half of the day on your own

To complete your one day in Auckland, set out on foot. From the Auckland cruise port, you can go in any direction.

Head south into town (Queen Street, Sky Tower, Albert Park, Art Museum)

Sky Jump seen from the Sky Tower

Simply cross the main road (at the light), and you are in the Auckland CBD (central business district). From here, take a self-guided walk down Queen Street .

At Victoria street, you can either turn right and head to the Sky Tower ( save time and reserve your ticket in advance ), or turn left to beautiful Albert Park (personally, I would only do the park in daylight hours). On the other side of the park is the Art Museum.

If you are an adrenaline junkie, don’t get the general pass up the Sky Tower. Instead, either jump off or walk the permitter up near the top, outside on the ledge. Reserve your SkyJump or SkyWalk tours in advance so you don’t miss out.

Head west towards Wynyard Quarter (Maritime Museum, super yachts, waterfront dining)

Polynesian boat can be seen at the Maritime Museum during and Auckland shore excursions

If you turn to the right on the main road (Quay street – pronounced Key Street), it’s just a short walk to Viaduct Harbour where you will find the Maritime Museum .

In the marina, you will usually find two former America’s Cup boats docked (if you time it right, you can even go out on one of them).

It’s called the “City of Sails” for a reason, and in addition to the America’s Cup option , if you want to get out on a purely relaxing sail, check out this 1.5-hour cruise . Both start from Viaduct Harbour. (Carefully check the timing before booking)

Cross the Wynard crossing bridge, and you will be in the redeveloped trendy Wynyard Quarter neighbourhood. This is a great place to enjoy seafood or gelato or to just sit along the waterfront and admire the super yachts.

Head south on a ferry (Waiheke Island for wine tasting, beaches, zipline)

Looking down on Cable Bay Vineyard on Waiheke Island outside of Auckland New Zealand

You can take a ferry out to Waiheke Island for lovely beaches, fabulous wine tasting, or the Eco Zipline, but watch your time closely, as you don’t want to miss a ferry back to Auckland and, therefore, miss your ship.

If you really want to visit Waiheke, this might be one excursion we would recommend taking with your ship.

Head west along the waterfront (coastal walk, SEA Life Kelly Tarlton’s )

Shark tunnel inside SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's in Auckland New Zealand

Another lovely walk is just to turn left on Quay Street and walk along the coast. Of course, the first part isn’t so nice as you will pass the container terminal, but after that, it’s lovely.

If you want to visit SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium, the 5.5 km waterfront walk will take you about 75 minutes, so you might want to consider a bus, taxi, or Uber in one of the directions. Reserve your SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium admission here .

Other options for Auckland cruise port fun

One tree hill seen from ASB showgrounds

There are plenty more things to do in Auckland. If you have been here before and done many or all of our suggestions above, or you just have specific goals in mind for the city, here are a few more options.

  • Auckland scenic full-day shore excursion : If you want to do it all with a guide, this 8-hour tour hits most of the same sights on the first half-day tour we recommend, then heads out west to the black sand beach and a wine tasting. Reserve your full-day Auckland shore excursion here .
  • Auckland Explorer Bus : In contrast, if you want to do it all on your own and don’t want a driver, one great DIY option is the Auckland Explorer hop-on-hop-off bus to many of the city’s key sites. Reserve your hop-on-hop-off bus in advance here.
  • Wineries Honey and Black Sand Beaches from Auckland A 6-hour tour that heads out west to three great wineries: Kumeu River Wines, Westbrook Winery, and Soljans Estate Winery, and then on to Muriwai Beach. Reserve your tour here .
  • Half-Day Auckland Volcanoes Tour This 5-hour tour will take you to Auckland’s four tallest volcanoes: Mt. Eden, One Tree Hill, Mangere Mountain, and Mt. Wellington. A moderate physical fitness level is required for this one. Reserve your volcanoes tour here .
  • Hire a private guide If none of this appeals, you don’t like to do it on your own, and you want to cram the maximum amount into your one day in Auckland, you might want to hire a private guide .

I love how you suggest tours and DIY Both! I have always wanted to visit New Zealand, but worried about the cost! How much per day for a couple it would cost in Auckland, on a mid-range budget? I hate cooking when I travel. So I will rely on outside for all meals

I would love to see the winter garden! Does it change each season going from “winter” garden to “spring” garden?

I like how you have incorporated a half-day tour with exploring by yourself. I think this would be a perfect blend for one day in Auckland. Fabulous information and suggested activities. Thank you.

There’s so much to see and do in Auckland. The SkyJump looks terrifying yet exciting. I would love to walk through a tunnel like the one at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium. A volcano tour sounds so cool!

Wow, there’s so much to see and do in Auckland for a day! I would love to explore New Zealand. I haven’t considered a cruise but could see it being really beneficial to see many places!

Love, love LOVE New Zealand! The port cruise is something I never thought to do when I was in Auckland. Oh well… I guess I’ll have to go back!

I agree with your suggestion about taking a tour for half the day and being on your own for the other half. Tours give the overview and let you get your bearings. Self-directed time lets you focus on the things you like best, which will be most memorable. I always ask the tour guide tons of questions… and then tip big!

Auckland Cruise Port

Auckland port is the turnaround cruise port of New Zealand, which means that cruise ships start and end their cruise in Auckland.

Auckland cruise port is located at Waitemata Harbour. Cruise vessels dock at Shed 10, located on Queens Wharf (Auckland’s primary cruise berth), or sometimes at Princes Wharf , both extremely close to downtown (you just cross the street and within a 5-minute walk you’ll reach the heart of the city).

Auckland cruise terminal involves 5 minutes of walking on a flat surface with lots of stairs or an elevator available instead. Tourists with mobility issues or using a device can use elevators. The terminal building has two levels and features facilities including a tour information desk, the New Zealand Customs Service, check-in,  luggage storage, and an x-ray screening area. Toilets and local maps are provided on the first floor.

The port of Auckland is also a major containership and ferry port in New Zealand. The Downtown Ferry terminal is located on Auckland’s waterfront, right next to Auckland Cruise Ship Terminal.

Major cruise lines sailing from/to Auckland include Viking Ocean Cruises, Holland America Line, Silversea, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, Azamara and Oceania Cruises.

Getting Around the Port of Auckland

  • Upon exiting the cruise terminal, you will see Auckland Harbor surrounded by lots of restaurants where you can enjoy local sweets or a very tasty lunch.
  • The harbor is full of incredible small ships, yachts, America’s Cup Race yachts, Regatta, and sailing ships. Close to the dock, you will find several city highlights such as The Winter Gardens (30 minutes walk), the Maritime Museum (10 minutes walk), the Sky Tower (20 minutes walk), the Art Gallery (15 minutes walk), and many others.
  • The city offers an amazing dining and shopping experience with multiple shops, designer stores, restaurants, bars and choices for everyone. Auckland boasts a strong Maori and Polynesian heritage that provides the city with a unique cosmopolitan vibe and expect to meet a lot of different nationalities during your visit.
  • You can also book an Auckland Hop on Hop off bus tour that includes stops at major attractions of Downtown Auckland.
  • The downtown is partially flat, however, some streets have cobblestones. Please consider that the city is extremely crowded which might be challenging for guests with mobility difficulties.
  • Auckland Airport is located 22 km/13.5 miles south of the city, or a 25-minute drive (depending on the traffic).

The bridge rises 43 meters/141 feet above high water, offering a unique photo opportunity you can’t miss! The bridge also offers bungee jumping facilities and a bridge climb with views of the city and the harbour.

Driving time from the Auckland port to the Harbour Bridge is approximately 15-20 minutes each way, depending on the traffic. This activity is considered moderate to strenuous.

Some of the main features include the Antarctic Encounter and the Underwater World, with numerous acrylic tunnels, exhibitions, shows, and a moving walkway with tons of fish and sharks swimming around and above you. Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium is located approximately a 15-minute drive from the dock.

5. Rangitoto Island

If you are interested in the rocky landscape that New Zealand has to offer, head over to the largest dormant volcano reaching a height of 260 m (850 ft), located right across Rangitoto Channel!

The island was created 600 years ago by volcano eruptions and is the youngest of the approximately 50 volcanoes of the Auckland volcanic field. Rangitoto Island is home to the world’s largest pohutukawa forest and the most popular getaway from the hustle and bustle of Auckland’s city center.

Rangitoto Island Auckland New Zealand

If you prefer an active holiday, you can hike up to the summit (approximately 1 hour each way) or take a land train to the top. The views from the summit are absolutely stunning and the experience is well worth it!

You can reach the island on a guided tour (any guided tour will take you to the rugged lava crops) or via regular ferries from Auckland harbour. A ferry ride takes around 30 minutes each way. To reach the Auckland Ferry Terminal from the dock you need to walk for at least 20 minutes.

6. Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Very few places in the world boast glowworm caves and New Zealand is one of them! The world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves are located around 192 km/119 miles southeast of Auckland and allow visitors to admire the entire stunning cave complex featuring incredible underground formations thousands of years old.

The glow worms illuminate the ancient caves like a constellation of stars and what makes this place so fascinating is that they don’t move or attack, they simply glow and produce an incredible light!

Traveling time from the Auckland port to Waitomo Caves is at least 2h 45 minutes each way. On a guided walking tour, you can learn about the cave system from a very knowledgeable guide and see the spectacular rock formations.

No photography is permitted inside the glowworm caves which makes the whole experience even more interesting. It’s very hard to describe in words how incredible the caves are in reality, and this experience is highly recommended!

Tips : Travel as lightly as possible, as it’s very warm inside the cave. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory (be mindful of the slippery surfaces). The caves are not recommended for tourists who have claustrophobia or are afraid of the dark. Bring insect repellent and some local currency.

7. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is the second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand and is famous for its world-class wine, beautiful beaches (OneroaBeach, Palm Beach, Onetangi Beach…) and stunning views. Known as the “island of wine”, Waiheke Island offers a wide range of activities including winery and wine tasting tours, kayaking, zipline experience, and so much more!

Waiheke Island has a lot of breathtaking views of cliffs, fascinating rock channels, and hidden caves that offer splendid views of the ocean. One of the most popular activities is kayaking through Waiheke Island, however, keep in mind that this activity is considered very strenuous with extended periods of standing and paddling. The ferry drop-off point is located within walking distance of the kayak base station.

Waiheke Island New Zealand

The island’s climate is favorable for growing Bordeaux-type grapes, though some Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc varieties are considered extremely good! Waiheke winegrowers regularly win awards and their wines rank among the best ones in the world.

If you are a wine lover, it’s highly recommended to book one of the wine-tasting tours where you get to learn about the winemaking process and the history of the region.

You can reach Waiheke Island by a 45-minute ferry ride from Auckland harbour. If you decide to do the zipline , you should know that from the ferry drop-off point is another 30-minute drive to the location where a safety briefing will be provided.

Check out Waiheke Island tours and activities

8. Hobbiton – Lord of the Rings

If you are a fan of the epic “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, then the Hobbiton Movie Set is a must-see place! Get ready for a “precious” day in New Zealand’s charming countryside and visit the magical village of the Shire where some of the major scenes from these legendary movies were shot!

At the Hobbiton Movie Set, you can admire the same landscapes that you’ve seen in the movie, including lakes, rolling hills, and 44 permanently reconstructed Hobbit holes (exterior visit only, except for one hole that you can visit inside). You can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set on a 2-hour guided walking tour only, and all tours depart from the Shire’s Rest.

Hobbiton village is located 181 km/113 miles south of Auckland and it takes at least 2h30 minutes to reach it (each way). If your cruise ship docks at Tauranga , I suggest you book a tour from Tauranga as it takes around 1.5 hours each way.

Hobbiton Movie Set - Shire

9. Snowplanet

Snowplanet is a recreation center located 37 km/23 miles northwest of Auckland (a 35-minute drive) known for its indoor skiing and snowboarding facilities on artificial snow. The slope is around 200 meters long and fully covered with snow, a perfect place for families and those in search of winter vibes!

Snowplanet is a very popular and requested attraction where you can purchase a snow pass for unlimited skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. It’s suitable for all levels and ages. A restaurant and facilities are available on-site.

10. Maori Cultural Center – Te Hana

Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre is an ideal place if you are looking to learn about the fascinating history, culture and traditions of New Zealand. Located a 1h 15-minute drive north of Auckland, the Maori Cultural Center features various displays and exhibits on Maori arts and offers an immersive Maori cultural experience. Take a walk through the 17th-century Maori village, witness Maori ceremonies, tribal songs and dances, and delight in authentic Maori cuisine!

Traveling time from the Auckland pier to Te Hana Te Ao Marama Maori Cultural Centre is at least 1 hr 30 minutes each way, depending on the traffic.

Waiheke Island

Escape the city on a short ferry ride to Waiheke Island from the CBD. This is where much of Auckland’s wine is produced. Plus, secluded walking trails and hidden waterfalls beg to be explored at Whakanewha Regional Park.

Top Things To Do in Auckland

Visit one tree hill.

Interestingly, One Tree Hill is a volcanic cone and one of 50 in Auckland city. It’s important to both early Maori and European history, and a  tour of One Tree Hill will give you the inside scoop. It’s set in a spacious park with beautiful gardens, avenues of trees, a planetarium, and a children’s playground.

Walk Waitemata Harbor

What could be more romantic than a harbor stroll at dusk or sunset? Luckily, Waitemata Harbor in Auckland is particularly beautiful, with downtown’s skyscrapers glittering off the waters. A long walk, picnic, or bar-hopping in the harbor’s restaurants is a must-do.

Step Inside the Ruakuri Caves

Descend into the breathtaking Ruakuri Caves, a natural wonder full of Maori history. Go down the cave’s spiral staircase and marvel at this underground labyrinth full of beautiful stalactites and brilliant glow worms at every turn.

Where can I eat in Auckland?

The Sugar Club

Address: Level 53, Sky Tower, Auckland, New Zealand

The crown jewel of Auckland’s skyline is the Sky Tower, and its observation deck restaurant is a fine dining experience like no other. The lunch and dinner menus emphasize sustainability and local sources, meaning the freshest ingredients are their main priority. The seasonal a-la-carte menu offers delicate dishes with powerful flavors, like scampi dumplings and Japanese quail. Desserts include a coconut and blood orange ice cream sandwich and a sheep panna cotta. The Sugar Club takes risks to bring you an unforgettable culinary experience in Auckland.

Best Ugly Bagels

Address: 90 Wellesley St W, Auckland, 1010, New Zealand

The motto at Best Ugly Bagels is “ugly ain’t fancy,” and this bagel spot hand-rolls their bagels and simmers them in honey water. It’s a different take on the traditional water-boiled bagel, but it’s meant to be crispy on the outside and doughy on the inside. Choose classic toppings like lox, capers, and dill, or go for a cream cheese schmear. Either way, it’s a delicious breakfast option in Auckland.

Ela Cuisine

Address: Elliott Stables, 39-41 Elliott St, Auckland, 1010, New Zealand

If you’re craving the tastes of South India, traditional Kerala cuisine is Ela’s core focus. Dinner mains include prawn curry, vegetarian dosa, lamb shank curry, and more. The restaurant also boasts a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options. It’s part of a dining precinct with a wide range of cuisine offerings.

What’s the culture and history of Auckland?

Maori settlement in the area of Auckland began thousands of years ago. In the 1800s, the discovery of gold in New Zealand caused an unforeseeable but impactful boom in fortune hunters from countries like China and Australia. This melting pot of individuals greatly influenced the culture of New Zealand, and they stayed in the region permanently to start their businesses and raise families. Today, Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city with over 1.5 million people representing many ethnic origins.

Where can I go shopping in Auckland?

You’ll find duty-free shopping for souvenirs and other local items at the DFS Galleria Custom House that you can stop in before one of our cruises from Auckland. At Britomart, you’ll find fashion boutiques, bookstores, and a variety of shopping. Ponsonby is known for designer fashions and shops that highlight local designers in jewelry, art, and interiors. Whether you have a retail mission or you’re just window shopping, Auckland’s shopping districts offer homewares, art, and beautiful clothes at all price points.

How can I get around Auckland?

Getting around the city of Auckland is pretty easy and straightforward, and downtown Auckland is walkable. There’s also a bus system, including the green Link bus which loops around central shopping precincts. Taxis are all over the port area where cruises from Auckland depart and are easy to use.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The official currency of the country is the New Zealand dollar. Tipping isn’t common practice in New Zealand, so don’t worry about tipping your taxi driver. Restaurants in Auckland don’t include service charges, so you can leave a 10% tip for excellent service. Most accept both cash and credit cards, and there are plenty of ATMs around the city.

New Zealand's largest city -- and the world's largest Polynesian city -- sprawls across an isthmus positioned between two harbors. The City of Sails boasts more boats per capita than any other and draws Kiwis with top surf spots and cultural charms. In the Parnell area, peruse art galleries, antique shops and cafes housed in restored Victorian buildings or venture to the harbor for a leisurely cruise or exhilarating jet boat tour. Nearby Rangitoto Island is the youngest but largest of the Auckland area's 48 volcanic cones, and a trek to its summit rewards hikers with 360-degree views of emerald seas. Some excursions introduce cruise passengers to Maori culture, while others head to sheep farms for a glimpse of New Zealand's rural life. Hobbiton enchants fans of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" movies, and below the village of Waitomo, a series of caves radiate a glittering blue light due to a rare glowworm species.

BeyondCruise

Port Call: What to do in Auckland for a day

Auckland Ferry Terminal

Things to do in Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland’s cruise terminal lands you right in the heart of the city. It’s the perfect cruise port to stay in and explore on your own. If you want to book a shore excursion, there are some great tours on offer that show off the best, and more remote, natural wonders New Zealand has to offer.

Azamara Journey at Princes Wharf, Auckland

Staying in the city centre

Civic Theatre, Queen Street

Walk up Queen Street, the main street in the CBD and check out the shops along the way. A few of the main attractions you’ll walk past are the Civic Theatre which opened in 1929 and hosts theatre shows and film festivals. Further up you’ll find Aotea Square, the entrance marked by a large carved wooden arch, created by Māori sculptor, Selwyn Muru. The Town Hall also sits on the edge of the Square. For more expensive shopping tastes, check out the shops on High Street.

Auckland Art Gallery

Auckland Art Gallery is a twenty-minute walk from the dock passing Queen Street on your way. The Art Gallery has a fee for international visitors but is a great place to see both contemporary and traditional Māori art as well as world-class temporary exhibitions and more. The Gallery sits on the edge of Albert Park, a beautiful park area great for a walk or picnic lunch.

Wynyard Quarter, Downtown Auckland

Wynyard Quarter and Silo Park are a short walk along the viaduct and are a great place to photograph the SkyTower or Harbour Bridge in the distance. Or grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or bars. If you arrive on a Saturday, be sure to check out the market!

View from the SkyTower observation deck

The SkyTower , Auckland’s tallest building at 220m, is a 15-minute walk from the port (although it’s uphill and a taxi/ uber isn’t a bad option). You need a ticket to visit the observation deck but anyone dining at one of the SkyTower’s restaurants (excluding the cafè) gains free entry and it’s our recommendation that you put your ticket money towards a meal in the sky! Orbit 360 Restaurant is a revolving restaurant so diners can view the city sprawled out beneath them in all directions as they dine. If you’re a foodie and have the budget, The Sugar Club is unbeatable for fine dining with Kiwi twists and cocktails to die for. Make sure you make a reservation well in advance to avoid missing out!

View of Rangitoto from North Head

For adventurous souls or photographers, head to the ferry terminal and board a ferry across the harbour to Devonport. This small seaside village has several cafes and restaurants by the beach but it also locates you near two of Auckland’s 53 volcanoes! Mt Victoria and North Head are both dormant but offer a short hike to incredible views of Auckland’s skyline across the harbour. Mt Victoria lies in the heart of Devonport and is quite a mild walk while North Head is a 30-minute walk away along the beautiful coast before you reach the top. The latter also offers a quick history lesson as you explore the retired battlements that used to defend the port as well as views of Rangitoto, a volcanic island often referred to as the backdrop of Auckland due to its appearance in many popular viewpoints in the city.

New Zealand Maritime Museum

If you’re a maritime nerd, you have to visit the Auckland Maritime Museum, located a short walk from the terminal!

Auckland Explorer Bus

This hop-on, hop-off bus service is a cheap and easy way to see the city of Auckland on your own. One of the two routes available departs a very short walk from the cruise terminal. Our favourite stops on this route are Bastion Point and the Auckland Museum.

Bastion Point and Michael Joseph Savage Memorial

Bastion Point – If you’re wanting to spend your day by the beach, hop off at Bastion Point and walk down to Mission Bay. This beach is a hive of activity with the main road full of bars, restaurants and ice cream stores. Bikes, rollerblades, kayaks, water bikes, paddleboards and more are all available for hire to explore the bay or buy some fish and chips and picnic in the park like the locals do. The beach is lovely to walk along with views of the aforementioned volcano, Rangitoto.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Auckland Museum – The best place in the city to experience some of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori culture. This exhibit is complete with a Māori Marae (meeting house), waka (wooden carved canoe) and many other Māori artefacts. It’s also the place to learn about New Zealand’s part in World War I & II and the country’s natural history.

Auckland Domain Wintergardens

Domain Wintergardens – The Museum’s neoclassical architecture and war memorial make it a sight to see in itself but if that’s not your cup of tea maybe The Domain Wintergardens will be! This nearby attraction is a three-minute walk from the museum and a registered historic place. Inside of the Victorian-style glasshouse is incredible gardens of tropical plants. It’s surrounded by a stunning courtyard and native plants too. Make sure you check the seasonal opening times.

This famous surf beach is known for its wild landscape and iconic landmark, Lion Rock. Like many beaches on New Zealand’s West Coast, Piha is carpeted in the black sand which derives its colour from high iron content as a result of the region’s volcanic activity. The drive to Piha is through winding bush roads and native New Zealand rainforest before finally emerging high above the beach below with panoramic coastal views. Due to Piha’s remote location, an hour out of the city, we recommend booking an official shore excursion.

Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves, Glow Worm tours

The small town of Waitomo is around 2.5 hours from Auckland which means it’s sensible to book an official cruise excursion if available but otherwise, Waitomo Caves are a must-see attraction in New Zealand. These underground caves are famous for their thousands of glow worms that light up the cave ceilings like stars in the night sky. Admire the glow worms and limestone formations as you sail through the caves on a rowboat tour.

Waiheke Island & Winery Tours

Waiheke Island, Oneroa Beach

A 35-minute ferry from downtown Auckland, Waiheke Island has around 30 wineries to choose from! The island has some restaurants, cafes, shops and several beaches to choose from. We recommend visiting Oneroa beach if you’re exploring on your own. Taxis do operate on the island but the bus essentially loops around the island making it easy to sight-see and get to-and-from the ferry terminal. However, to make the most of your time and especially if you’re after some of the best New Zealand wine, we recommend booking a wine-tasting Waiheke shore excursion!

Sun princess: the best dining, amenities and more on princess cruises' newest ship.

Sun Princess features an updated layout, delicious new restaurants and plenty of spaces to be entertained.

Sun Princess Review

Aerial of the Sun Princess over open water.

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Key Takeaways

  • Sun Princess' fresher, more modern design may appeal to a younger crowd than the line normally caters to.
  • Incredible dining options abound, including The Catch by Rudi and the new Spellbound dinner and magic show.
  • New Cabana Mini-Suites feature indoor-outdoor cabana areas and spacious balconies.

As a travel writer who cruises with all the major lines, I was excited to travel through the Mediterranean on the new Sun Princess cruise ship in May 2024. I traveled with my mother to celebrate her 76th birthday shortly after the new ship's February debut in Rome . The itinerary we sailed was a unique, one-way offering that departed from Athens, Greece , with visits to ports like Bar, Montenegro; Corfu, Greece; and Messina and Naples, Italy .

A true marvel of modern engineering and ship architecture, Sun Princess boasts a maximum guest capacity of 4,300 and room for 1,600 crew. The Sphere-Class vessel is 1,133 feet long and 200 feet high, with a breadth of 139 feet and 21 total decks. There are 2,157 staterooms, including 80 unique suites with extra space for guests.

Standout features include a three-floor main dining area, the Princess Arena with capacity for 990 guests and a 250-person entertainment space known as The Dome. Read on to learn everything there is to know about the Sun Princess cruise ship, including my own take on the dining and entertainment options available to cruisers.

Sun Princess itineraries for 2024 and 2025

Sun Princess.

Holly Johnson

While Sun Princess is scheduled to cruise the Mediterranean through September 2024, the ship will cross the Atlantic on its way to Fort Lauderdale, Florida , by October for the winter cruise season.

From this new homeport, Sun Princess will offer seven-day Caribbean cruises with the stops in Honduras, Belize , Mexico, the Bahamas , the Dominican Republic, and Turks & Caicos through March 2025.

Sun Princess will then embark on a 14-day Spanish Passage voyage in March 2025, which ends in Barcelona, Spain , and repositions the ship for its summer in the Mediterranean. At that point, cruisers can book a range of lengthy Mediterranean options over various dates, which include stops in Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Italy, France, Spain and more.

Who should sail on Sun Princess?

Sun Princess.

While most people may think of Princess Cruises as a cruise line for baby boomers, Sun Princess aims to attract a younger, livelier crowd. This is immediately apparent when walking around the ship's common areas; Sun Princess boasts bold color schemes, endless windows, sparkling lights and a more modern central piazza than other Princess ships.

While my Mediterranean sailing largely consisted of adult travelers, Sun Princess will likely attract more families on its Caribbean itineraries. The ship's layout is ideal for parents with children of all ages, and amenities geared specifically toward kids abound. It all starts with the ship's Park19 family area, which features a huge climbing structure, a splash zone, a recreational court, a jogging court and more. Sun Princess also has three dedicated youth clubs: Firefly Park Kids Club (ages 3 to 7, with a separate play area for babies and toddlers 6 months and older), Neon Grove Tweens Club (ages 8 to 12) and The Underground Teen Lounge (ages 13 to 17).

What's interesting about Sun Princess is that it still has so much to offer more mature travelers, including couples who want to enjoy a romantic, upscale vacation. This is shown in the ship's elevated dining venues, expansive casino and luxurious spa. Sun Princess also offers the Sanctuary Collection of rooms and suites, which offer more amenities and spaces to relax on the ship.

Travelers who book a room in the Sanctuary Collection get their pick of a nicer selection of rooms, a premium beverage package, access to a private restaurant and pool deck and a more personalized experience overall. Think of the Sanctuary Collection suites as an alternative to MSC Cruises Yacht Club cabins – the biggest difference being that the venues available to cruisers in these cabins are spread throughout the ship.

The stateroom

Sun Princess.

I stayed in one of the new Cabana Mini-Suites on the Sun Princess, which I would book again in a heartbeat. These rooms are a take on the classic balcony cabin most cruisers expect, but with a twist. In addition to an outdoor balcony, Cabana Mini-Suites have a separate indoor-outdoor cabana-like area with a flat-screen television.

This extra space means the new Cabana Mini-Suites are much longer from one end to the other than a traditional balcony stateroom. The additional space is nice to have whether you want more room for storage or a separate place to read or relax while your cabinmate naps. My mom sat in our cabana area and read several times while I showered and got ready for dinner, and she even took a nap out there while I worked on my computer in our stateroom.

Regardless of the stateroom you book, know that Sun Princess cabins feature soft, neutral tones and plenty of closet space. Power outlets are abundant, and there are all kinds of nooks and crannies for storage. Cabin types on Sun Princess include the following:

Interior Cabins (136 to 145 square feet)

Basic interior rooms offer a queen bed or two small twin beds, a flat-panel television, a refrigerator, and a private bathroom with a shower. These are the most affordable cabins on the ship, and they work best for guests who just want a place to relax and sleep.

Premium Oceanview (212 square feet)

Ocean-view cabins have slightly more space than interior rooms, but they still lack a balcony. These rooms feature a queen bed or two twin configurations, a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Deluxe Balcony (235 square feet, including balcony)

Balcony cabins offer more space than ocean-view rooms due to the addition of a spacious balcony with outdoor seating. Balcony cabins can also come in a queen bed or two twin configuration and have a large flat-screen television, a refrigerator, and more floor and storage space.

Mini-Suite (303 square feet, including balcony)

Mini-Suites are essentially large balcony cabins with more storage space, more closet space and more floor space. These rooms have all the amenities of other cabins but include two flat-screen televisions (one for the bedroom area and another for couch viewing).

Cabana Mini-Suite (329 square feet, including balcony and cabana)

The Cabana Mini-Suite on the Sun Princess.

These rooms add the indoor-outdoor space of the cabana adjacent to the outdoor balcony. The cabana area has seating for several people and its own flat-screen television (in addition to the in-room TV).

Signature Suites (304 to 636 square feet, including balcony)

Signature Suites range in size and include larger balconies with premium furniture, two flat-screen televisions, a more spacious bathroom with a separate tub and shower, and dedicated sleeping and living areas.

Signature Sky Suites (1,262 square feet, including balcony)

Princess Cruises Signature Sky Suites are the largest staterooms across all Princess vessels, and they have all the bells and whistles you can imagine. Standout features of Sky Suites include separate living and dining areas; huge, luxurious bathrooms; and Nespresso coffee machines.

(Note: Sanctuary Collection rooms are dotted throughout the ship and consist of balcony-, mini-suite- and suite-category accommodations.)

Best amenities on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Since my itinerary on the Sun Princess cruise ship included multiple port stops, I didn't get to experience everything the ship had to offer. However, what I did experience was worth it – from the nonstop entertainment in the piazza to over-the-top dining features. Some of my standout experiences include:

Part dinner and part magic show, Spellbound by Magic Castle is bookable for an additional charge. The experience begins with a small group dinner with drink pairings, then moves to a hidden bar area of the ship, where the magic begins. The bar itself features magical artifacts and vintage curiosities, a "ghost" pianist, and an incredible drink menu designed to wow and delight guests. Some drinks were served in cages, golden owls and elaborate chests with dry ice.

Magic came in the form of intriguing card tricks and disappearing acts at the bar, plus a separate stage area where crowd participation helped facilitate the illusions. I don't want to give anything more than that away – you must simply experience it for yourself. Though I thought Spellbound was slightly cheesy at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and show and feel it was worth the added cost.

The Dome on the Sun Princess is part pool area and part stage. Guests can swim in a unique indoor-outdoor pool by day and watch entertainers dance in the evening, with alluring lighting effects and a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

I watched an acrobatics show in The Dome from the comfort of a padded lounge chair and thought the venue was the place to be.

Princess Arena

The Princess Arena is a circular stage area that holds up to 990 guests. Shows on offer include multifaceted stage productions and acrobatic features with plenty of surprises.

Fitness center

The Sun Princess' fitness center was huge and featured a range of treadmills, stair climbers, weights and machines to choose from. I never had trouble securing a treadmill at any time, even though I've had to wait and fight crowds for machines on other cruise ships.

I also loved the expansive walking track on the ship, which was constantly in use by both serious exercisers and cruisers walking leisurely to enjoy the views. I used the walking track every morning for at least an hour; I found it much more spacious and usable than other ship walking tracks, which are often congested and never quite wide enough.

The ship also features a Fitness Studio with guided classes, but I did not use it during my trip.

Sun Princess features five large pools and nine hot tubs. There are two pools on the lido deck, plus an indoor-outdoor pool in The Dome, a Sanctuary pool (for Sanctuary Collection guests only) and a wake-view infinity pool.

Medallion services

Princess MedallionClass is one of the coolest and most convenient amenities at sea. In place of a traditional cruise card, Princess gives you a small wearable device to bring with you around the ship and on shore. The medallion tracks your physical location on the ship, which allows you to order services and deliveries on board no matter where you are. Medallion delivery options range from food and drinks to extra pillows or bottled water.

I ordered room service through my medallion multiple times and hot, fresh food arrived in my cabin in less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, drinks were delivered to our cabin and elsewhere on the ship in less than five minutes.

MedallionNet

Princess' Wi-Fi at sea (MedallionNet) is the fastest internet service I have ever used on a cruise ship. The internet was fast and reliable enough for me to complete some work while on board, which is not the norm on cruise ships.

Best dining venues Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

Sun Princess features 30 dining and bar options, many of which are included in the base cruise fare. Complimentary dining venues on Sun Princess include three traditional dining rooms, The Eatery (a take on the classic buffet, but with staff service), a café for coffee and light bites, The Lido (serving up salads, pizza and more) and the Promenade Dining grill.

Specialty dining options for an extra charge range from O'Malley's Irish Pub to a sushi spot to steak, seafood and Italian restaurants. For an extra special experience, head to Love by Britto to indulge in fine dining, or opt for Umai hot pot or teppanyaki venues. Meanwhile, bars on Sun Princess include Bellini's Cocktail Bar, Sea View Bar, The MIX and more.

My personal favorite dining experiences included:

My Spellbound dinner was excellent, even though the menu is fairly brief. I enjoyed a delicious shrimp cocktail and seafood entree, followed by a vegan dessert (I'm allergic to dairy and the ship happily accommodated). What stood out for me with Spellbound, at least food-wise, was the eclectic selection of drink pairings offered with the meal. It started with a caprese salad cocktail that tasted like tomatoes and balsamic vinegar in a strange, delicious way, then moved on to the spooky concoctions offered in the Spellbound bar.

Crown Grill

Crown Grill, a specialty dining venue, is not unique to Sun Princess, but it is the cruise line's most popular steakhouse brand. My mom and I had a delicious meal here for her birthday that included a Mediterranean-style spiny lobster cake, Chilean sea bass and a huge (surprise) birthday cake delivered to our table.

The Catch by Rudi

The Catch by Rudi is the ship's specialty dining seafood restaurant. Here, I dined on a delicious shrimp cocktail and the catch of the day (a grilled dorado filet). Everything was fresh and the meal was exceptional from start to finish.

I loved The Eatery, the ship's buffet-style dining option. The main difference between this venue and more traditional cruise ship buffets is that you're served by staff instead of serving yourself, which I prefer. The Eatery featured a rotating selection of exceptional main courses (seafood, chicken, beef and ethnic options), salads, appetizers and delicious desserts. It even had a vegan section and an easy-to-find selection of gluten-free offerings.

Best excursions on Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

The best excursions on Sun Princess vary depending on where you're going on your cruise – the Caribbean or various Europe destinations. Here's an overview of some excellent excursions offered aboard Sun Princess, a few of which I did myself.

Corfu, Greece

Catamaran Coastal Cruise & Swim: This easy excursion lets you see Corfu from the sea and get out into the water for some snorkeling and swimming. I picked this excursion so we could relax for one day and avoid a lot of walking, and it delivered. A delicious lunch with an open bar was served on board as we sailed around the island taking in some of Corfu's most beautiful sights.

Naples, Italy

Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Cruise: No trip to this region of Italy is complete without a stop in the Amalfi Coast . This excursion was a long one (eight to nine hours) with lots of walking and bus time, but the views of this dynamic coast and time spent in Amalfi and Sorrento made the travel time well worth it.

Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos

Island Vibes & Beach Swim: This relatively short excursion includes a narrated bus trip throughout the island of Grand Turk, highlighting some of the island's top sights. A beach break at picturesque Governor's Beach is included.

Princess Cays, Bahamas

Princess Cays Coastal Cruise: Princess Cruises' private island offers a range of bookable activities, from banana boat rides to snorkeling tours. This coastal cruise is another option that takes you along the shores of Eleuthera in a 40-foot Reef Princess boat.

Overall impressions of Sun Princess

Sun Princess.

If you're considering a cruise on Sun Princess, you should know that this isn't your traditional Princess ship. The look and feel of this vessel are younger and livelier compared to other Princess ships I have sailed on. Gone are the hallways filled with cruisers knitting and playing cards; in their place, you'll find dancing, entertainment, music and activities around the clock.

When it comes to Sun Princess dining, every meal I had on board was either very good or excellent. You don't even have to opt for an extra-cost specialty dining venue to get a good meal. The Eatery and the regular dining rooms feature fresh, seasonal foods that are more than enough for the average palate to enjoy.

Caribbean itineraries on offer later this year (and into 2025) start at around $660 per person for an interior cabin, and Princess features an endless roster of sales throughout the year. If you're looking for a new cruising experience and want to give Princess a try (or another chance), Sun Princess is more than worthy of your consideration.

Disney Cruise Guest Held Hostage Onboard by Cast Members

in Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Wonder cruise ship as seen from the beach on Castaway Cay.

A Disney Cruise Line guest recently claimed that cast members held her hostage onboard, preventing her from embarking on a paid port excursion. One of the involved Disney Cruise ship employees shared their story on social media.

Disney Cruise Line operates five ships: Disney Wish, Disney Wonder, Disney Fantasy, Disney Dream, and Disney Magic. Its next vessel, Disney Treasure, sets sail in December 2024. Two more, Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny, are scheduled to take maiden voyages in 2025 and 2026.

Disney Dream ship, adorned with elegant golden designs, sails on the open ocean under a clear sky, showcasing its vast scale and modern structure.

Mickey Mouse and his friends set sail worldwide, embarking from Auckland, New Zealand; Barcelona, Spain; Brisbane, Australia; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; Copenhagen, Denmark; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Galveston, Texas; Honolulu, Hawai’i; Melbourne, Australia; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York City; Port Canaveral, Florida; San Diego, California; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Southampton, England; Sydney, Australia; and Vancouver, Canada. Disney Adventure will embark on new journeys from ports throughout Asia.

A Disney Cruise is unforgettable, whether you’re on a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Alaska or a relaxing visit to one of Disney’s private islands, Disney Castaway Cay or Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Unfortunately, one Disney Cruise Line guest claimed that cast members onboard made her vacation infamously memorable. However, the Disney cast members who were involved told a different story.

Former Walt Disney World Resort cast member Kelsey Conkling (@disneywithkels on TikTok ) recently re-enacted an interaction a Disney Cruise Line employee shared with her. The guest was frustrated that the captain canceled a Grand Cayman port visit due to inclement weather in the area. She demanded to know how she could still go on her planned excursion and felt held hostage onboard.

“Because everyone has to stay on the ship, then all of the excursions are canceled, and you will be issued a full refund,” the Disney cast member reassured the guest.

“No, I don’t accept that,” the guest responded. “… That’s not going to work for me.”

In addition to a full refund, the Disney cast member offered the guest an onboard credit that she could use to purchase snacks or merchandise. The guest refused.

A large cruise ship named "Disney Dream" is docked at a port during sunset. The sun is setting behind the ship, casting a warm glow on the water and sky. With Disney characters aboard, this once-in-a-lifetime experience showcases the Disney name and logo, with multiple decks visible.

“I would like to go on the excursion I paid for,” she said.

“That’s the one thing I cannot do for you,” the Disney Cruise Line employee replied. “I can’t control the weather or how the sea behaves. So sorry.”

The exasperated guest walked away, yelling that she “thought this place was supposed to be about magic.”

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, beloved Disney characters, are dressed as ship captains, with Mickey in a blue uniform and Minnie in red. They stand in front of a large structure featuring the Disney Cruise Line logo, smiling and holding hands, alongside a joyful child with disabilities.

“Guess she didn’t want those credits,” the cast member quipped.

While a canceled excursion can be frustrating, Disney Cruise Line cast members must make difficult calls to protect guest safety during harsh weather conditions. Visit Guest Services onboard with any questions about changes to your itinerary–but remember, they can’t control the ocean!
