Who is Mike's Bikes?

Mike's Bikes was founded in 1964 as one of Marin County's very first Schwinn shops. It is rumored that our store in San Rafael was home to some of the first mountain bikes in the country. Cycling has changed dramatically as the decades have rolled by, but Mike's Bikes has never wavered from our total dedication to the sport.

Today, Mike's Bikes is a growing family of bike shops, all with a singular purpose - to get as many people on bikes as possible. We operate 14 wildly successful stores in Northern California, a thriving E-Commerce business, and now we welcome 4 like-minded stores in Colorado to the family!

3. Will I still be able to use my 5 years of free tune-ups?

Yes. We will honor all 5-years of free tune-ups from bikes purchased from Elevation Cycles through 2022.

4. What brands will you carry?

We carry Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Pivot, Cervelo, Yeti, Giant, Orbea, Public and NS Bikes. While some of our brands have changed our intention has always been, and will always be, to serve the needs of our customers first. We believe part of taking care of you, our customer, is by offering the widest selection of exceptional brands and we feel confident you'll find the exact bike to suit your needs here at Mike's Bikes!

5. What is available in store?

We will continue to carry some of our favorite brands like Pivot, Yeti, Giro, etc. but you will also see some new brands such as Santa Cruz, Cervelo, Cannondale, Gazelle and more. Our website will show you what is available in Colorado and what can be shipped to you. If the item is in Colorado, you are able to buy online and pick it up in the store that is closest to you.

6. Will the faces be the same?

While the name on the store has changed, the faces and names within remain the same. We were acquired because of our unparalleled ability to serve our community. So yes, we're the same folks who got your child on their first bike, fitted you for your new road bike and set your suspension on your new full squish. As always, we're looking forward to seeing you again, so c'mon in!

7. Do you ship direct?

In fact we do! We offer free UPS ground shipping on all orders over $49 to all customers within the contiguous US. The best way to determine your options is to add your items to the cart and proceed with the checkout process.

Cannondale, Santa Cruz, Juliana, Gazelle, BMC, and *other bikes ship for FREE, but Wheelsmith Gold Label Assembly will be added at checkout for only $79 (reg. $100) to cover the professional bike build and re-packaging by our certified technicians.

You are here, mike’s bikes buys four elevation cycles stores in colorado.

DENVER (BRAIN) — Mike’s Bikes, the California retailer acquired by Pon.Bike last August , has bought the four-store Elevation Cycles chain in the Denver area.

Elevation Cycles, founded in 2012, has long been closely associated with Trek. A former Trek employee and his partners founded the chain in 2012 with the help of Trek. The chain began with the acquisition of a former Bicycle Pedal’r store in Highlands Ranch.  

Furthering the association, at least one of the stores’ exteriors features a Trek logo, and Elevation Cycles briefly owned a location in Boulder that was later acquired by a third party and then sold to Trek; it's now a Trek company store. However, Elevation Cycles has never been owned by Trek Bicycle. Prior to the acquisition by Mike's, which went through a few weeks ago, the stores carried Trek, Pivot, Giant and Kona bikes.  

Going forward, the stores will sell Pon’s Cannondale brand as well as Giant and Orbea, but not Trek.  

That was Trek’s decision, said Ken Martin, the president of Mike’s Bikes.  

“We were fully prepared to be a Trek dealer in Denver, but they decided to not move forward with that, which I understand,” he told BRAIN on Friday. Specialized made a similar decision after Pon acquired the Mike’s chain, immediately ending its relationship with Mike’s rather than continue to do business with a perceived competitor.

While Trek seems to be taking a gradual wind-down of its business with Elevation, the company is already advertising for multiple retail positions in Highlands Ranch and Denver   despite not owning a store there.  

“I’ve seen those ads, I assume they are planning to open a store in Highlands Ranch, which is great,” Martin said. “If Highlands Ranch becomes the epicenter of bike retail in the Denver region, that could draw in a lot of consumers,” Martin said.  

A Trek spokesman did not immediately respond to an email from BRAIN; Trek rarely comments about its retail acquisitions.  

Specialized also owns a store in Highlands Ranch, one of the four Bike Source locations in Colorado that it bought last November .   

Pon owns Cervelo, Santa Cruz, Juliana, Gazelle and the former Dorel Sports brands: Cannondale, Schwinn, GT and Mongoose.  

As with the 14 Mike’s Bikes locations in California, the four Colorado stores — two in Denver, one in Parker and the Highlands Ranch location — will carry a mix of Pon-owned brands and other brands, Martin said.  

“It’s super important to us to maintain authenticity and not become a corporate bike shop; that’s my worst nightmare,” Martin said. He said the company is still considering whether the Colorado stores will be renamed as Mike’s Bikes stores.    

Elevation Cycles was owned by Tyler Pilger and Philip Brown. Pilger referred BRAIN’s questions about the sale to Martin.  

Asked if there were more retail acquisitions in the works, Martin said, "of course there are."
