Journey Albums in Order: This American rock band Journey, born in San Francisco in 1973, has left its mark on the music world by flashing some very unforgettable hits that show strong performances.

The band Journey had started off initially with members from other notable bands such as Santana, the Steve Miller Band, and Frumious Bandersnatch before later developing into a quintessence of rock music, especially during the period of peak commercial success from 1978 to 1987 with lead vocalist Steve Perry. Their range and durability are supported by a vast catalog to their credit, some of which are even timeless pieces like the case of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which ironically became the best-selling iTunes song of the pre-21st-century era. There are twenty-five gold and platinum albums to Journey’s credit, including the 18-time platinum Greatest Hits, that justify it across the world.

In their chronological form, most Journey albums have the ability to clearly define the band’s development from its progressive rock roots to the pinnacle of its career as pop-rock giants—making them one of the best-selling bands of all time and earning their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 1. journey (1975).

  • Of a Lifetime
  • In the Morning Day
  • To Play Some Music
  • In My Lonely Feeling / Conversations
  • Mystery Mountain

“Journey” was the first studio album by American rock band Journey, released by Columbia Records on April 1, 1975. Far from the sound of their later years, this first release was in a more jazzy progressive rock direction with strong instrumental aspirations; among other things, it also had rhythm guitarist George Tickner in an oddity distinction in their lineup. Before this release, Journey had recorded a demo album with the same songs but in a different order, and it had Prairie Prince as the drummer. Quite a number of unreleased tracks—including some instrumentals—and the original title track, “Charge of the Light Brigade,” had not been included in this very basic starting album.

2. Look into the Future (1976)

journey albums Look into the Future image

  • On a Saturday Nite
  • It’s All Too Much
  • She Makes Me (Feel Alright)
  • You’re on Your Own
  • Look into the Future
  • Midnight Dreamer
  • I’m Gonna Leave You

“Look into the Future,” Journey’s second studio album, was released through Columbia Records in January 1976 and marked a change in musical direction for the band. Though it tempered a lot of the overt progressiveness of that debut self-titled album, this sophomore effort still maintained a lot of its experimental feel, particularly in songs like the title track and “I’m Gonna Leave You.” The record also included a cover of The Beatles’ “It’s All Too Much,” which was originally featured in the Yellow Submarine film. “Look into the Future” remains the longest recorded Journey song. Importantly, it was the last album to feature rhythm guitarist George Tickner; hence, his exit reduced the membership to the lineup of Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Ross Valory, and Aynsley Dunbar.

3. Next (1977)

journey albums Next image

  • I Would Find You
  • Here We Are
  • Nickel and Dime

“Released in 1977, ‘Next’ was Journey’s third studio album and became a continuation of the band’s sound, merging elements from 1976’s ‘Look into the Future’ with traces of their earlier jazz-progressive rock style. Distinctly, ‘Next’ marked the end of an era: it was the last album to feature Gregg Rolie as the primary lead singer. The single release from this album was ‘Spaceman’/ ‘Nickel and Dime.’ Curiously, on early pressings, an instrumental track named ‘Cookie Duster’ was listed but not included. ‘Next’ peaked at No. 85 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and saw the beginning of lead vocalist Robert Fleischman with the band, setting the stage for the evolution of the group’s musical direction.

4. Infinity (1978)

journey albums Infinity image

  • Feeling That Way
  • Wheel in the Sky
  • Somethin’ to Hide
  • Winds of March
  • Opened the Door

“Infinity” is the fourth studio album by the famous American rock band Journey, which became a real landmark in the group’s history. This January 1978 release of Columbia Records became a real turning point for the band since it was the first to present the powerful vocals of Steve Perry and also their first album with him as the vocalist. It was also the last to include Aynsley Dunbar as a drummer. Such a landmark release pointed toward Journey’s new sound and set up the path for the band’s future successes, setting the stage for an iconic musical journey to come.

5. Evolution (1979)

journey albums Evolution image

  • Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’
  • City of the Angels
  • When You’re Alone (It Ain’t Easy)
  • Sweet and Simple
  • Lovin’ You Is Easy
  • Just the Same Way
  • Do You Recall

The fifth studio album by American rock band Journey, “Evolution,” was the breakthrough. It came out in March 1979 via Columbia Records and was the first to include Steve Smith on drums in the lineup. It was the highest-charting album the group had at that time, peaking at number 20 on the US Billboard 200, and has sold three million copies in the US. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker, famous for his work with the band Queen, the album included the hit “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’,” their first Top 20 single, and “Just the Same Way,” which duetted both the original lead vocalist Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry. Having tracks like “Too Late,” “Evolution” really pushed the limits of rock ballads with Neal Schon’s impressive guitar work.

6. Departure (1980)

journey albums Departure image

  • Any Way You Want It
  • Walks Like a Lady
  • Someday Soon
  • People and Places
  • Precious Time
  • Where Were You
  • I’m Cryin’
  • Line of Fire
  • Good Morning Girl
  • Stay Awhile
  • Homemade Love
  • Natural Thing
  • Little Girl

Their sixth studio album, “Departure,” was released on February 29, 1980, by the American rock band Journey through Columbia Records. This was a breakout album for Journey in that it would be their first top 10 Billboard 200 chart peaking at No. 8. With the Top 25 single “Any Way You Want It,” “Departure” had a bit harder edge to it because of its “live in studio” recording method.

The album had three singles, and these were supplemented in their effect on the charts by “Walks Like a Lady” and a medley of “Good Morning Girl” and “Stay Awhile”. Of special note is the fact that this album was the last to include founding member Gregg Rolie and the first to set the stage for the inclusion of Jonathan Cain into the band. In the years that followed, “Departure” would be remastered and reissued to feature bonus tracks for fans everywhere.

7. Escape (1981)

journey albums Escape image

  • Don’t Stop Believin’
  • Stone in Love
  • Who’s Crying Now
  • Keep On Runnin’
  • Still They Ride
  • Lay It Down
  • Dead or Alive
  • Mother, Father

In a word, Escape—stylized as E5C4P3 on the album cover—was the epitome of Journey’s musical career. This seventh studio album, released on 17 July 1981 via Columbia Records, reached number one on the American Billboard 200 chart. Here is the bona fide chart-topping sensation, equipped with an impressive quartet of Billboard Hot 100 singles: the classic anthem “Don’t Stop Believin'” (no. 9), “Who’s Crying Now” (no. 4), “Still They Ride” (no. 19), and the heart-rending ballad “Open Arms” reaching No. 2. This rock opus also bestowed the airwaves with another immortal classic, ‘Stone in Love.’ With the RIAA certifying it diamond in July 2021, it became Journey’s most successful studio album and the second most overall successful album, only behind their greatest hits package.

8. Frontiers (1983)

journey albums Frontiers image

  • Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)
  • Send Her My Love
  • Chain Reaction
  • After the Fall
  • Edge of the Blade
  • Troubled Child

“Frontiers,” the eighth studio album by the American rock band Journey, was released on February 1, 1983, via Columbia Records. Noticeably, it was the last performance with bassist Ross Valory until the 1996 release of “Trial by Fire.” It became their biggest seller to date, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and generating four top 40 singles: “After the Fall” (No. 23), “Send Her My Love” (No. 23), “Faithfully” (No. 12), and “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” (No. 8). “Frontiers” was later certified six times platinum by the RIAA. Interestingly, the tracklist for this album was changed at the last minute. Two songs were exchanged, one of which, “Only the Young,” gained some popularity in the movie “Vision Quest.”

9. Raised on Radio (1986)

journey albums Raised on Radio image

  • Girl Can’t Help It
  • Positive Touch
  • Be Good to Yourself
  • Once You Love Somebody
  • Happy to Give
  • Raised on Radio
  • I’ll Be Alright Without You
  • It Could Have Been You
  • The Eyes of a Woman
  • Why Can’t This Night Go on Forever

“Raised on Radio,” the ninth studio album by the American rock band Journey, was released in April 1986 on the Columbia Records label. This was a radical lineup change, as it was their first album without founding bassist Ross Valory; he was substituted by session bassist Bob Glaub and later by Randy Jackson. Only a few cuts were performed by drummer Steve Smith before he was replaced, and then supplemented by the session drummer Larrie Londin, and Mike Baird for the following tour. The album was very successful and issued three US top 20 singles: “Girl Can’t Help It,” “I’ll Be Alright Without You,” and “Suzanne.” It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Double Platinum in the USA.

10. Trial by Fire (1996)

  • Message of Love
  • When You Love a Woman
  • If He Should Break Your Heart
  • Forever in Blue
  • Castles Burning
  • Don’t Be Down on Me Baby
  • Still She Cries
  • Colors of the Spirit
  • When I Think of You
  • Easy to Fall
  • Can’t Tame the Lion
  • It’s Just the Rain
  • Trial by Fire
  • Baby I’m a Leavin’ You
  • I Can See It in Your Eyes

“Trial by Fire,” the tenth studio album by the American rock group Journey, was released on October 22, 1996. It marked the return of the classic 1981–1985 lineup, which had not recorded together since the aforementioned “Frontiers.” Produced by Kevin Shirley, it also included the return of bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith from the aforementioned set. This was the last to feature vocalist Steve Perry. Standout songs on the album include Grammy-nominated hit, “When You Love a Woman”, and a set of spiritually-inspired songs. This album was, however, the only Journey release never to receive supporting on local tours, due to internal disagreements and the hip injury that Perry had. It reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and it was also done on platinum.

11. Arrival (2001)

journey albums Arrival image

  • Higher Place
  • All the Way
  • Signs of Life

  • I Got a Reason
  • With Your Love
  • Lifetime of Dreams
  • Live and Breathe
  • Nothin’ Comes Close
  • To Be Alive Again
  • Kiss Me Softly
  • We Will Meet Again

“Arrival,” the eleventh studio album by the legendary American rock band Journey, was released on April 3, 2001, and in Japan during 2000, with one song substituted. The record became a real watershed event in the history of this band since it presented a new vocalist, Steve Augeri, after the unforgettable Steve Perry, and a new drummer, Deen Castronovo, succeeding Steve Smith. “Arrival” was a record that mixed the hard rock elements reminiscent of the ’70s and ’80s material of the band with their trademark ballads, which sounded more like Perry. Although it turned out to be a commercial success by hitting #12 on Billboard’s Top Internet Albums chart, the album received mixed reviews from critics; some praised Neal Schon’s guitar work but called it formulaic.

12. Generations (2005)

journey albums Generations image

  • Faith in the Heartland
  • The Place in Your Heart
  • A Better Life
  • Every Generation
  • Butterfly (She Flies Alone)
  • Knowing That You Love Me
  • Out of Harms Way
  • In Self-Defense
  • Better Together
  • Beyond the Clouds
  • Never Too Late
  • Pride of the Family

“Generations,” Journey’s twelfth studio album, was the final performance by this iconic American rock band with lead singer Steve Augeri. It was the final act in a period of time, released in 2005 on Sanctuary Records, that had cemented the lineup which debuted on 2000’s “Arrival” and continued with 2002’s “Red 13 EP” with Deen Castronovo on drums. One of the distinctive things about the album was that all members of the band took turns singing lead vocals, a decision instigated by Augeri’s vocal fatigue. Critical reception was mixed—some liked Augeri’s performance and the various musical direction taken by the band but questioned the decision to share lead vocals. It peaked at No. 170 on the Billboard 200, and Augeri left the band in the middle of the 2006 tour with a throat infection, thus ending the era of Journey’s sound.

13. Revelation (2008)

journey albums Revelation image

  • Never Walk Away
  • Like a Sunshower

  • After All These Years
  • Where Did I Lose Your Love

  • Turn Down the World Tonight
  • The Journey (Revelation)
  • Let It Take You Back

“Revelation” was the thirteenth studio album by the American rock band Journey, which was the first to feature their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda. It includes 11 new tracks and 11 re-recorded greatest hits, both proving the vocals of Pineda. Added to this in the North American version was a DVD of the band performing dynamically on March 8, 2008, in Las Vegas. Other notable singles included “Never Walk Away,” “Where Did I Lose Your Love,” and “After All These Years,” both written by Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain, did very well on the adult contemporary charts. The album earned very good reviews; many praised Pineda’s vocals and the band’s return to form. An extra track, “Let It Take You Back,” was included in the European release.

14. Eclipse (2011)

journey albums Eclipse image

It was released worldwide on different dates in 2011, coming out first on May 24 in the United States and Canada, then on May 27 in Japan, May 30 in the United Kingdom, and finally on June 3 for the international release. With songwriting credits are Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain; Pineda provided his share of songwriting as well. It is the final appearance of bassist Ross Valory, who left the band in 2020. The ‘Eclipse’ adds another chapter to Journey’s long-lived musical history.

15. Freedom (2022)

journey albums Freedom image

  • Still Believe in Love
  • You Got the Best of Me
  • Live to Love Again
  • The Way We Used to Be
  • Come Away with Me
  • Let It Rain
  • Holdin’ On

“Freedom” is the fifteenth studio album released by the American rock legends Journey on 8 July 2022 through BMG Rights Management and Frontiers Records. Marking a landmark change in this regard, it is the group’s second album without band co-founder bassist Ross Valory, who has been replaced by Randy Jackson, the last of whose work with Journey was in 1986’s “Raised on Radio”. Featuring fifteen tracks running a grand one hour, thirteen minutes, it becomes Journey’s longest album, excluding greatest hits compilations. While it was hailed for its performance and musicianship, this album got very mixed critical reviews, but most of the critics—or, more importantly, most reviews—were mentioning the poor production, poor mixing, and general overlongness of it.

Conclusion:

The fact that such a journey has endured is purely a testament to their ability to provide timeless rock anthems that go on and on, basically, forever—to connect with people from all corners of the globe. From the early days of just another progressive rock band to a pop-rock powerhouse, Journey’s albums show it all. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, and hit songs such as “Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey still does not give any hint of slowing down to become one of the most popular rock bands ever. A look through Journey albums in order points to the fact that the group has hauled its long journey through several decades of music; surely it has cemented its place within the pages of rock history but, more importantly, within the hearts of their fans everywhere.

JOURNEY STUDIO ALBUMS

Released: April 1, 1975

Journey’s self-titled debut album was released in April 1975 and was the band’s first outing into the musical world. At the time, Journey was yet to adopt the arena rock sound that they would later become famous for. Instead, the album exhibited strong influences of jazz fusion and progressive rock, with extensive instrumental solos and complex musical arrangements.

Notable tracks include “Of a Lifetime” and “Mystery Mountain,” which offered a glimpse into the technical proficiency and artistic aspirations of the band. Though the album didn’t achieve significant commercial success, it laid the groundwork for what the band could accomplish. The album featured Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Aynsley Dunbar on drums, and George Tickner on rhythm guitar. It was produced by Roy Halee and recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco in late 1974. .

However, the album failed to bring substantial commercial success, although it was a step forward in terms of songwriting and complexity. Neal Schon on guitars, Ross Valory on bass, and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals returned for this album, with Aynsley Dunbar continuing to provide the drum work. The album was produced by Glen Kolotkin and was recorded at CBS Studios in San Francisco during late 1975.

While not commercially successful upon its release, it gained some retrospective recognition for marking a transitional phase for the band. As with the previous albums, the lineup featured Neal Schon on guitars, Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals, Ross Valory on bass, and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. It featured hits like “Lights” and “Wheel in the Sky,” which have since become staples of classic rock radio. Q&A: Neal Schon On The ‘Freedom’ Of Journey, His Friendship With Carlos Santana And Much More

Journey will release Freedom , their first album in 11 years, this Friday (July 8). With the 11-year gap between records, the band's longest break between albums, and the presence of drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden, Freedom , according to guitarist Neal Schon, is a true representation of who Journey is in 2022.

Neal Schon on Journey’s New LP ‘Freedom,’ Ambitious 50th Anniversary Plans

It’s been 11 years since Journey released their last studio record, and for a while it was looking like they’d never get around to making one. “Nobody was really interested in making new music,” Journey founder and guitarist and Neal Schon tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his California home. “It’s very difficult to get new material played and to get people familiar with it before you go out and play live. Everybody in the band was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.'”

Journey’s New ‘Freedom’ LP: Track List, Cover Art, Release Date

Journey will release their first album in more than a decade this summer.  Freedom  arrives on July 8.

You can see the LP's track listing and cover art below.

The band recently shared the second single from the album, " You Got the Best of Me ."  Freedom  is currently available for pre-ordering .

"During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do,” guitarist Neal Schon  said in a press release. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”

In February, Schon shared an Instagram post containing the band's signature scarab logo, the  Freedom  title and the 15-song track listing with the caption, "Teaser … it’s coming and it’s loaded."

Listen to Journey's 'You Got the Best of Me'

Freedom  marks the band's first album since 2011's  Eclipse . Schon, keyboardist  Jonathan Cain  and singer  Arnel Pineda  are joined on the record by bassist Randy Jackson, who also played on Journey’s 1986 album  Raised on Radio .

The new album also includes " The Way We Used to Be ," which the band released in June 2021 with an animated music video.

Schon said that song "came out of one of the many loops I’d written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with. ... I laid down the keyboard loop with overdubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent it to Jonathan. He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics, and I said to myself with a smile, 'We've still got it!'"

Freedom is also the name of Journey's current  North American tour , which launched in February.  Toto  are providing support for the entire trek. Toto were originally scheduled to split opening duties with Billy Idol , but he had to  bow out of the tour to receive sinus surgery.

TIFF 2024 'The Salt Path': Gillian Anderson, Jason Isaacs lead intimate love story told through an exceptional journey

Anderson and isaacs play raynor "ray" and moth winn, a couple who trekked 630 miles along the english coast.

An intimate love story starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, The Salt Path chronicles the real-life journey of Raynor "Ray" and Moth Winn. After being forced out of their home and Moth diagnosed with a terminal illness, the married couple in their 50s set out on a 630-mile trek along the English coast from Dorset to Somerset.

Based on Ray's book of the same name, the film, which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), shows this transformational journey for the couple. The film, directed by Marianne Elliott, is a beautiful story of resiliency, survival, nature and love.

For Elliott, who came to direct The Salt Path after an extensive career in theatre, she was reminded of Ray's book after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theatre productions.

"I was in my 50s, I was looking into the abyss of, oh my God my career is over, and the book really kind of starts there, a woman in her 50s, but actually in a much, much, much worse situation," Elliott told Yahoo Canada . "And then she and her husband go on this incredible journey."

For Isaacs, he was particularly drawn to this love story and the inexplicable miracle that happened for this couple.

"The people that it documents are just so unforgettable and their experience is so profound, and so moving, and they're so unsentimental about these extraordinarily beautiful things that happened to them, because they happened through hardship and through suffering," Isaacs said. "I thought the story was beautiful and then I met them, and they are extraordinary people."

"Moth, the man I play, just radiates love and joy and happiness. He's solely concerned with making everybody else OK and comfortable, even though, for instance the first Zoom I had with him, he was documenting in an unguarded way the terrible indignities that his condition visits on him, and he was laughing and laughing. And when I watched the Zoom back, I was trying to study his accent, I realized I was laughing too, and I felt awful, but he wanted me to be comfortable. He wanted me to love them."

'Sex symbol' Gillian Anderson plays Ray Winn with 'no vanity'

In terms of collaborating with Anderson, Isaacs praised his costar as a "really smart, great actress."

"She's just a proper actress, you don't have to talk about it or think about it or practise it much, she just got it, and I hope that I got it too," Isaacs said. "In real life they are mostly concerned, Moth and Ray, with how the other person is feeling, and if we just did that when the camera was rolling, the audience might get some sense of it."

Isaacs added that Ray and Moth were "absolutely besotted" with each other, and that unbreakable link is something they tried to capture on screen.

"No matter how awful things are, no matter how much at some point in this film and in their journey they blamed each other for this terrible situation they're in, where they lost everything, the house, their money, the home, the future, and he was losing his life, throughout all that, no matter how estranged they felt, they are one person," Isaacs said.

Elliott was also quick to commend both Isaacs and Anderson for their work on The Salt Path , but highlighted that this is a surprising role for Anderson, in particular.

"Gillian was surprising, I suppose, because it's a part that you wouldn't necessarily think that she would be right for," Elliott said. "I mean, she's a sex symbol. She's just written a book about sex and I know people my daughter's age, early 20s, some of her male friends just think she's the hottest thing ever."

"But here she was playing this 50-year-old woman, warts and all, no vanity, feeling like she was at the end of her life and she'd lost everything, with true vulnerability. It was just glorious to see her be able to do things that she isn't often asked to do."

'It was a very intimate, intense journey that we were on'

While the environment for this epic journey looks beautiful on screen, there were also moments of brutal and treacherous weather that Moth and Ray had to endure to continue their trek. The reality of the environment carried over to the production as well.

"It was really pretty intense, because we had something like 29 days and we were out in the wilds of Cornwall and Devon, and ... we were really at the mercy of the weather," Elliott said. "Everybody was helping the crew take the camera up the hills."

"So therefore, it was a very intimate, intense journey that we were on."

While the terrain was also a difficulty for the actors, the reality that Ray and Moth actually went on this journey was always in Isaacs' mind.

"You couldn't allow yourself to feel sorry for yourself, ... because I'm playing someone with a terminal neurological condition, degenerative condition, ... he was really doing that," Isaacs said. "So when I get somewhere and they go, 'OK the next scene you're climbing up this hill of boulders.' I'm like, there's no way he does it with one leg, and they go, 'Well, he did do it with one leg.'"

"Sometimes it was very cold and very wet, or other times it was blisteringly hot, but it was always easy to remind myself that we were filming and they were living it."

But with the hardships of this path, paired with the beautiful connection between Ray and Moth, and their love and appreciation of nature, it's a beautifully nuanced story to dive into.

"You want to tell human stories so that people watching it can either recognize something about themselves or be led to hope something about themselves, or a cautionary tale," Isaacs said. "You just want something that resembles life, because so many of the stories that are told, and even many that I've told too, don't resemble life at all, and so we take nothing from them, apart from the fact that for two hours I have been distracted from my real life, and go straight back to it."

"But a beautiful story like The Salt Path and Ray and Moth's story together gives you so much to think about, so much to lean into."

The book is a darkly comic semi-autobiographical work following the journey of disillusioned anti-hero Ferdinand Bardamu across decades. The book charts Bardamu’s adventures, from World War I to French West Africa and New York, where he finds work on an assembly line at Ford Motor Company before moving back to France and becoming a doctor in a poor Paris suburb.

Sfar and Bidegain’s adaptation will explore the protagonist’s inner journey and dark existential quest in the wake of war and social misery.

“I read ‘Journey’ when I was 15, and it’s one of those masterpieces that shaped me; I read it without knowing anything about Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and you can imagine how that complicated my life later on. I can’t unlearn this book,” Sfar says.

He says Bidegain is his favorite screenwriter because they share the “same tastes, the same laughter, and the same dislikes.” Sfar says he’s “always worked on symbols that unite or divide French society—Gainsbourg, Saint-Ex, Japrisot;” and with this adaptation of Céline, he’s reached a “point of maximum tension.” “That’s where we need to dig,” says Sfar.

Bidegain says the novel “remains a relevant key to understanding our times.” “The list is long of those who have grappled with Bardamu’s adventures, his desperate humor, his clinical insight, the novel’s impossible picaresque structure, the unwieldy figure of its author, and the Himalaya of Céline’s language,” says Bidegain, whose recent screenwriting credits include Jacques Audiard’s Cannes prizewinning musical thriller “Emilia Pérez.”

“It took a giant like Joann for this project to come to life. Our joyful meeting swept away any doubts — our shared desire for cinema, to create images and meaning, our irreverent fascination with this great work… And here we are, hard at work, full of enthusiasm,” Bidegain continues.

Soumache and Attal, who are also both Jewish, said in a joint statement that the project to adapt Celine’s novel felt like an “immense responsibility, but also an unprecedented creative adventure.”

“Alongside Joann Sfar and Thomas Bidegain, we have the ambition to translate this literary masterpiece onto the screen with all its power, depth, and complexity,” they added.

The pair said they have “gathered an exceptional artistic team to capture the tormented and masterful essence of Céline’s work.” They also suggested they will take some liberty with the novel to deliver a “cinematic reinterpretation of Bardamu’s existential and tragic journey,” which will showcase Sfar and Bidegain’s “unique and singular vision that will resonate with a wide audience.”

Creating the perfect laptop: intel’s hybrid processor journey.

Intel's Core Ultra Series 2 Lunar Lake processors represent Intel's latest hybrid core design that ... [+] will influence how its desktop processors are designed too

When Intel ushered in its 12th generation Alder Lake laptop and desktop hybrid processors three years ago, it set in motion a process that would redefine how a CPU is designed and also how it works with Windows. Its recent Lunar Lake mobile processor launch is the fourth generation of these CPUs that features two different types of cores and the biggest changes this time around are primarily down to how those cores function as a team.

In what many viewed as a surprising and drastic move, Lunar Lake CPUs do away with a long standing feature called Hyper-Threading, which allows individual cores to handle two software threads instead of one, filling any downtime and improving performance, particularly in multi-threaded workloads. There are rumors it will remove this feature from its Arrow Lake desktop CPUs too, ending two decades of the feature being supported on desktop PCs.

I caught up with David Feng, Vice President and General Manager of Intel's Client Computing Group at Germany's IFA event this month and he explained why these hybrid mixes of performance cores (P-cores) and efficient cores (E-cores) mean that including hyper-threading no longer makes sense and can actually result in a negative overall benefit in modern CPUs.

Google Warns Millions Of Android Users—Do Not Install These Apps

Ukrainian troops breached russian border defenses 20 miles west of the kursk salient—but didn’t get very far, ‘shock and awe’—china could be about to trigger a $1.4 trillion bitcoin and crypto price earthquake.

Antony: Lunar Lake is a major launch for Intel and the performance and power efficiency claims are impressive. I was hoping you could maybe explain what the benefits are of upgrading to new laptop would be to owners of say a 10 th or 11 th Gen laptop would be – something that was new 5 years ago and also from something newer - perhaps bought in the last 12 months?

David: The world is a very different place now. If you have a CPU that is three or four years old, back then we were not running ChatGPTs or AI. Even aside from the changes that Covid brought, we now have a whole new appreciation for performance per watt and power efficiency. Not that we didn’t care back then, but it’s a level of prioritisation. Back then performance was a higher priority but now it’s more balanced with thin and light devices focussing on performance and low power at the same time.

Compared to those older CPUs, you’ll see significantly more performance and much longer battery life. Modern processors can run new classes of applications powered by AI and Lunar Lake is also designed to handle triple-A games all on a thin and light device – something you wouldn’t even be able to imagine four or five years ago unless you had a heavy laptop with a discrete GPU.

Now, moving from the more recent Meteor Lake Core Ultra 100 to Lunar Lake Core Ultra 200 series, you’re most likely something of an earlier adopter or have a high refresh of your technology. Meteor Lake is still a great design and cutting edge in many areas such as AI. However, Lunar Lake still offers significant CPU AI and power efficiency enhancements. That said, Meteor Lake also offers huge benefits compared to 13 th Gen CPUs – 30-40% lower power for example. Driving the power down even more than we’ve done before.

Intel's Lunar Lake CPU

When we say Lunar Lake has 30% better GPU performance, we’re actually comparing that to Meteor Lake H which is the higher power segment. Compared to Meteor Lake U-series it’s an even bigger improvement. Probably up to 80% graphics improvement. But even Meteor Lake has far superior graphics performance to earlier models.

Antony: That’s been quite a quick transition from Meteor Lake to Lunar Lake. What’s driven Intel to launch a new generation of CPUs in such a short time frame?

David: That’s a really good question. Silicon has a long lead time in term of designing and bringing a product to market. Usually four or five years. We’re continuously looking at the future architectures on a rolling basis. When planning for the Meteor Lake architecture we recognised the importance of having a new engine like an NPU, new power management like low power E-core and driven by our Foveros 3D packaging to bring everything together. When our architects put our Meteor Lake architecture together they were working towards that timeframe, but with the next generation they could already see ways of enhancing the different cores, the GPU core, the NPU and power management.

Intel has found that having more E-cores in its CPUs had significant benefits to power savings and ... [+] in turn battery life

For example, we had two E-cores with Meteor Lake and something we realised quickly is that it would be more beneficial to power savings to have more of them with a larger cache too. That’s where Lunar Lake’s 50% power savings come from. We could drive more applications without having to engage the more power hungry P-cores at all. We’re learning as we go with that power and performance balance with our hybrid core designs.

Antony: I’ve been following Intel’s Evo standard ever since it was the unbranded project Athena as I thought it was a great idea – having a standard that makes it easier to pick a laptop that guarantees a quality experience in terms of battery life, performance and features. Has the Evo standard evolved much over time?

David: Again a great question. It hasn’t changed in its goals. It’s still to offer the best, uncompromised mobile experience. The types of applications, though, are evolving. AI for example, wasn’t part of the plan back then. At the very beginning I don’t think we appreciated how much the core components would vary and have such an impact on performance. Screen panels, memory and even SSDs can have big affects on your power profile. With a few generations of Evo now under out belt we learned so much about the system ingredients and variations so we’re now in a much better position to guide the industry on how to put together the best configuration.

From a user experience perspective, since Meteor Lake, we added more testing to balance cool and quiet performance operation. We know how to boost performance but doing that without generating a lot of heat or noise is key, as well as maintaining battery life. So now you have four competing things and we’re learning from Meteor Lake and added testing criteria for cool and quiet operation. That’s one example.

Intel's Evo standard has been raised over generations and now includes webcam quality as well as ... [+] older features such as cooling, weight and temperature testing

With Lunar Lake, we have an increased focus on gaming and can run triple A games at playable frame rates. I was purposely going around the demo systems here at IFA to touch the back of the laptops with my hand. They were not even warm and they were quiet too. The webcam is something we’ve added recently too. Resolution or pixels are important but they are not always an indication of image quality. We are constantly raising the bar for what is expect for Evo.

Antony: The removal of hyper threading with Lunar Lake is a big move and it’s what’s been rumored with desktop Arrow Lake due later this year too. Won’t this result in less multi-thread performance compared previous generations? What would you say to those concerned about that? Was the reasoning mainly power efficiency related? Hyper threading has obviously been a feature of Intel CPUs for so long.

David: Hyper-threading was a great idea and our engineers figured that when we’re loading the compute pipeline, we’re not fully utilising it because it’s like building a car on a manufacturing pipeline, I want to make sure every station is fully utilized all the time. So when they built the data pipelines and hyper-threading was implemented they were using 100% of pipeline all the time along with a relatively small overhead in terms of power and extra space on the CPU die to get another thread. However, it was more for a desktop market than a mobile market. The expectations for mobile devices were lower back then and not today where we have 20 hour battery life.

Intel introduced hyper-threading two decades ago, but it's hybrid CPUs mean it no longer offers an ... [+] overall positive impact in a world where efficiency and power consumption are high priorities

When we first introduced hybrid cores – E-Cores and P-cores with out 12 th Gen architecture, there were some discussions about whether that was achieving the best battery life and power efficiency. We learned a lot through the generations since Alder Lake and began to understand that actually, a hybrid architecture with E-cores is the most efficient way to deliver the balance between higher performance and including muti-threaded performance and maintaining lower power.

Even with a hybrid architecture you could still have hyper-threading and push forwards some performance metrics but hyper-threading will hit us negatively on power efficiency and power per thread – overall it’s a net neutral or even net negative result which is why Lunar Lake doesn’t support it.

In the past, especially on desktop, this wasn’t much of a concern, but even on desktop enthusiasts are definitely paying more attention to power consumption. The whole industry really is more focussed on a balanced approach to lower level of power for the same performance. For us Lunar Lake is the culmination of everything we’ve learned from previous hybrid core architectures, fully leveraging the benefits of low power E-cores - more of them with more cache - turned out to be a better trade off than maintaining hyper-threading.

Activist Amanda Nguyen Shares Cover of Moving New Memoir: ‘Written for Every Survivor’ (Exclusive)

‘Saving Five: A Memoir of Hope’ details Nguyen’s activism journey following being raped in 2013

Carly Tagen-Dye is the Books editorial assistant at PEOPLE, where she writes for both print and digital platforms.

AUWA; Duke Winn

In 2013, while attending Harvard University, Amanda Nguyen ’s life was forever altered when she was raped. The then-student had dreams of working at NASA after she graduated, and because she was determined not to let this experience derail her path, Nguyen filed her rape kit — a sexual assault forensic exam — under the name “Jane Doe.” When Nguyen learned that staying anonymous gave her limited time before her kit was scheduled to be destroyed by the state of Massachusetts, therefore denying her any further legal action, she knew she had to act. The Nobel Prize nominee and astronaut’s journey is detailed in her forthcoming memoir, Saving Five: A Memoir of Hope , whose cover is exclusively revealed by PEOPLE.

The book, publishing from AUWA next year, follows Nguyen from the “violent turmoil” of her childhood to her role as a civil rights activist today. Nguyen's work allowed for the unanimous passage of the 2016 Sexual Assault Survivor’s Rights Act. She also founded the civil rights organization Rise , which aims to protect the rights of rape and sexual assault survivors, per their website.

Saving Five , which also incorporates the voices of Nguyen’s younger selves at ages 5, 15, 22 and 30, is a “moving journey toward acceptance and hope,” per the memoir’s description.

"This is a book of pure bravery. Amanda Nguyen went through a deeply traumatic experience and came out the other side in ways that helped lift up countless others," said Questlove whose imprint AUWA will publish the book. "It’s hard to imagine her strength, her honesty, or her intelligence when it comes to dealing with self-doubt. I am so happy to have the opportunity to support her voice, and to bring Saving Five to the world.”

Nguyen was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019 and was named a TIME Woman of the Year in 2022. In addition to her work for sexual assault victims, she also helped ignite the Stop Asian Hate Movement in 2021. Nguyen’s first flight to space, with the Blue Origin launch, is also planned for 2025.

Writing Saving Five was an important experience for Nguyen — and she hopes the book will impact others too.

"This book is written for every survivor,” Nguyen tells PEOPLE. “Writing it helped me heal. It is my greatest hope that these pages can help heal all who seek it, to show we can make it through.” Saving Five: A Memoir of Hope will be published on March 4, 2025 and is now available for preorder, wherever books are sold.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, please contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or go to rainn.org .
