iPhone users can add websites to their iOS 17 home screens as progressive web apps, and essentially turn sites into standalone apps. However, there are a few features typically reserved for iOS apps, and one of those is push notifications. If you do want to receive push notifications from a website, there is a workaround in the Settings app that involves flipping a WebKit flag. This gives web apps the ability to send push notifications through Safari, as long as the website natively supports browser notifications. Although Apple announced this functionality in 2022 and shipped it in 2023, it's still considered an experimental feature, so you'll have to follow the steps below to use them.

iOS 17 review: The bubble is now greener on the other side

Apple is embracing its tight ecosystem with this release, further alienating Android users in the process.

How to enable push notifications in Safari

If you have a recent iPhone , or an iPad running version 16.4 or later, you can follow the steps below to enable Safari push notifications for specific websites. By doing so, you will receive alerts similar to those of native iOS apps, helping you know when your favorite websites publish timely content.

1. Open the Settings app on iOS 17.

2. Scroll down to the Safari tab, and tap on it.

3. Find the Advanced tab at the bottom of the screen and press it.

4. Tap the Feature Flags tab.

5. You will see a long list of WebKit flags organized in alphabetical order. Look for Notifications and flip the toggle them on.

How to add a website to your iOS Home Screen

After that, you'll need to manually add each website you'd like to receive notifications from to your Home Screen. Here's how:

1. Launch the Safari app and visit the website you'd like to receive push notifications from.

2. Tap on the Share button in the middle of the bottom bar

3. Choose Add to Home Screen .

4. Optionally rename the web app, then tap Add in the top right corner.

5. It will now appear on your Home Screen as a native app. Launch the newly-added web app.

6. Find the website's notifications settings and enable push notifications.

7. iOS will ask for your permission to enable them. Tap Allow to finish.

Now, the web app will be able to notify you as long as you keep it on your Home Screen. If you delete it, then the permission is revoked automatically, and you won't be able to receive alerts from it until you add it again.

Should you use push notifications from websites on iPhone?

As you can see, the process to enable Safari push notifications on iOS and iPadOS is more complex when compared to macOS because you need to add the web app to the Home Screen for it to work. On new Macs , you can just allow or deny website permissions without needing to bookmark them in any way. Regardless, it can be done now on newer versions of iOS 16 or later. It's useful, but be sure to choose wisely which websites you give access to notifications in Safari. If you give permission to the wrong website, your iPhone could quickly be cluttered with spam.

How to manage Safari notifications on Mac

Keep up with your favorite sites ... or don't

Safari Mac

Back in Mac OS X Mountain Lion , Apple added a new feature called Safari Web Notifications. This new feature allowed users to subscribe to website updates, then receive push notifications right inside of Notification Center whenever website content updated.

This can be a great feature, or, in some cases, an annoying one. In this article, we'll show you how to manage your Safari Web Notifications or even get rid of them entirely.

Subscribing to a web notification

To subscribe to a web notification in Safari, you'll first need to visit a website that allows web notifications. CNN.com is a great example of a site that provides useful notifications to Safari users. When visiting the website, you'll be prompted to subscribe or choose to not be asked again. Clicking subscribe will add your Mac to the subscription list, and you'll begin receiving push notifications on your Mac when website content updates or whenever CNN decides to send out breaking news updates.

Viewing and removing web notification subscriptions

If you wish to view the websites that you're currently subscribed to, or you change your mind about not wanting notifications, then open Safari and open the preferences (press Command + , [comma] for a shortcut), then click on the notifications tab. A list of all the websites that have offered you notifications will be displayed. Here, you can view all of the sites that you're subscribed to and revoke notifications from any of these sites if you wish. You can also click on "Allow" to ensure that a particular site can send you push notifications. Additionally, you can remove any websites from this list by selecting them and clicking "Remove" or remove them all by clicking the "Remove All" button.

Safari Notifications

Disable web notification subscriptions

If you no longer wish to be asked to subscribe to notifications when visiting websites, then perform these steps:

1. Open Safari.

2. Navigate to Preferences > Notifications.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

3. Click "Remove All."

4. Uncheck the option for "Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications."

This will remove all current subscriptions, plus keep websites from asking if you'd like to subscribe in the future.

How to manage notifications in macOS

There's no end-all, be-all set of steps for enabling or disabling notifications — the process is highly dependent on your personal preferences. Instead, it mostly boils down to learning what each option does. This guide is designed to show you the plethora of options you have to manage notifications in macOS Catalina.

The location of Notifications within System Preferences

Where to find the Notifications settings in macOS Catalina

  • Click the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen
  • Click System Preferences
  • Click Notifications

Once in Notifications, you'll be able to customize your notifications to your heart's content. Here's a list of the options you'll run into, as well as what each option does.

Do Not Disturb

manage safari notifications

If you've got an iPhone, you're probably already familiar with Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. When your Mac is in DND, all notifications are stopped and held for later review. You can set up specific times and scenarios for your Mac to hide notifications such as 10:00 pm until 7:00 am, when your display is sleeping, or when you're projecting your screen.

You can also allow specific notifications — such as call notifications — to "break through" Do Not Disturb, enabling you to receive them when other notifications are hidden.

Toggling Notifications on and off

Toggling this switch turns notifications on or off for the macOS app Messages

Below "Do Not Disturb", you'll find a list of all the applications on your Mac that have the ability to push notifications to you. Here, you'll be able to set what permissions these apps have when it comes to sending notifications.

Toggling "Allow Notifications from..." for a specific app allows you to toggle any alerts on and off easily.

App alert style

App alert style options

You can further customize the type of alert you get, too. Every app can have one of three types of alert styles.

  • None: Notifications don't appear on-screen at all
  • Banners : Notifications appear in the top right corner of the screen and disappear after a few seconds
  • Alerts: Notifications appear in the top right corner stay on the screen until you dismiss them

Customizing Notification preferences in macOS

Notification preferences

There are an additional set of notification preferences for each individual app. Toggling these on and off allows you to further customize the way notifications can interact with your Mac.

  • Show notifications on lock screen: Whenever you wake your Mac from sleep, you'll see missed notifications in the log-in screen.
  • Show notification preview: You can toggle when you would like to see a preview of a notification. If you choose "when unlocked," you'll only see a preview when logged into your account. Selecting "always" will show previews on the log-in screen as well.
  • Show in Notification Center: This allows you to see an app's recent notifications in your Notification Center.
  • Badge app icon: When this box is checked, it allows a small red dot — or "badge" — to be applied to an app in your dock. For some apps, such as mail or messages, the badge may also display a number, alerting you to the number of notifications that specific app has pushed.
  • Play sound for notifications: You can control what apps make noises by toggling this option on or off.
  • Recent: Notifications are sorted by time.
  • Recents by app: Notifications are grouped by app, with each notification listed by time.
  • Manually by app: Notifications are grouped by app and sorted based on the order they're listed in Notifications preferences. You can reorder apps in the list by dragging them up or down.

The Beauty of Local Backups

Apple's Safari web browser has lagged behind some features in recent years, especially with background services. After years of waiting, it seems like Safari will finally support web push notifications on all platforms.

Following today's WWDC event , Apple published a post on the WebKit Blog explaining what's new in the Safari 16 Beta. Perhaps the most surprising addition is Web Push support, which is already functional on the macOS Ventura beta release. The feature will allow web sites and web apps to send push notifications, even when they are not open.

"Web Push is coming to Safari 16 on macOS Ventura," Apple said in the blog post. "This lets you remotely send notifications to users of your websites and web apps --- and deliver those notifications even when Safari isn't running. It uses the same combination of web standards you may be familiar with from other browsers: Push API and Notifications API, along with Service Worker."

Similar to Firefox , Safari will only allow a website to show a prompt to enable notifications after you've interacted with the page --- for example, you won't see the popup message right after a page loads, but you might see one after you click a link or button. That won't stop the pages from showing buttons in the page for enabling notifications, but it will prevent Safari itself from spamming you.

Safari on macOS has technically supported push notifications since Mac OS X 10.9, but Safari's notifications worked differently than push notifications other browsers --- sites had to register for a paid Apple developer license, and the technology for sending alerts wasn't similar at all. This new implementation uses the same push standard that every other browser uses, and sites don't have to pay for Apple developer accounts to provide visitors with notifications.

Importantly, Apple says Web Push will arrive on the iPhone and iPad sometime in 2023. That's a massive win for web apps on mobile Apple devices --- you could always use alternative browsers on Mac if you needed push notifications, but Apple doesn't allow third-party browser engines on iPhone and iPad. Web Push will make Progressive Web Apps better than ever on iPhone and iPad, as long as Apple doesn't introduce any strange limitations or missing features.

How to Enable or Disable Push Notifications in Safari Mac?

Sending notifications is a simple way for website owners to send the latest information to the reader. There are different types of notifications that a website can show when you visit the page. Though notifications are useful to get information, most of the time they annoying due to the bad user experience. Since, website owners push the notifications and show anytime, it makes sense for readers to block them to have distraction free reading. In this article, we will explain how to manage push notifications in Safari browser on your Mac.

Mac Safari and Notifications

Safari browser on Mac shows notifications request as per the website’s design. However, you have multiple options to block different types of notifications as a whole as well as for specific websites that annoys you. The notification process in Safari works like below:

  • Website send a push notification request.
  • You subscribe to the notifications by allowing the request or have an option block the notifications from that website.
  • When allowed, Safari show push notifications using the default “ Notification Center ” on your Mac.
  • When blocked, Safari will add the exception in the website preference which you can change anytime later.

Push Notifications in Safari

Push notification is a server side technology that triggers notifications to the readers. This is very useful feature on mobiles to receive updates from news and other apps. In fact, Apple introduced this push notification to send messages from iOS apps. The advantage of push notifications is that it can work even after you closed the apps. Similar to mobile phones, the websites on desktop also can show you push notifications.

Below is the example of push notification confirmation on Safari browser on Mac.

Push Notification Confirmation on Mac Safari

The push notifications from some websites show “Allow” and “No Thanks” button while some sites will show you “Allow” and “Block” or “Cancel” buttons. You can either allow, cancel or block the notifications from the website. If you are allowing, Safari will show you another message that the website will send notifications from “Notification Center”. You can click on “Allow” to continue or click “Don’t Allow” to block.

Allow or Block Push Notifications from Websites in Safari Mac

When you allow or block, Safari will automatically add this in your preference and send or block notifications from that website. You can also manually allow or block notifications following the below instructions:

  • Go to Safari menu and click on “Preferences…” option.
  • Under “Websites” tab go to “Notifications” section on the left sidebar.
  • Here you can view the list of sites that you have enabled notifications.
  • Select the site and change the permission to allow or deny sending notification on the browser.

Manage Notifications in Safari

Permanently Blocking Push Notifications in Safari Mac

The good part is that websites can’t send you notifications without your permission. Therefore, it is easy for you to block the request for all the websites.

  • Head back to Safari preferences section and go to “Websites” tab.
  • Under “Notifications” section, deselect the option “Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications”.

This will disable the push notification requests from websites, and you will be never prompted with any messages. If you need notifications from websites then enable this check box and then choose to allow or block specific websites when they request your permission.

Removing and Adding Websites in Notifications

On Google Chrome, you have the options to add websites for blocking or allowing notifications. As you can see in the screenshots, Safari does not allow you to add the websites for blocking notifications. What you can do is to manage after you have visited the website and allowed/blocked the notifications. However, anytime you can select the websites from the list and click on the “Remove” button to delete from the list. This is strange that you have a remove option without the option to add.

In addition, Chrome also allows you to block or allow websites using wildcard. For example, you can add the entry like “*.domain.com” to block or allow notifications from all subdomains of a website. Unfortunately, you can’t do this with Safari on your Mac.

Also, remember that Safari can’t block the inline pop-up notifications shown within the same browser window. This is the same problem with Chrome and other browsers.

Understanding Safari Push Notifications

Working mechanism of safari notifications, setting up safari notifications on mac, safari push notifications on ipados, user experience with safari push notifications, developing safari push notifications, enhancements and updates in safari push notifications, focus mode and safari notifications, troubleshooting safari push notifications.

Safari Push Notifications are a feature that allows websites to send notifications to users even when they are not actively using the website. This feature is available on iOS Safari and Mac Safari and can be enabled by users who wish to receive notifications from their favourite websites. Safari Push Notifications are similar to push notifications for apps and display the website icon and notification text, which users can click to go directly to the website.

Enabling Safari Push Notifications on iOS Safari is a simple process that involves adding the website to the home screen and granting permission for notifications. Once enabled, users can receive notifications from websites even when Safari is not running. This feature is particularly useful for websites that provide real-time updates such as news websites, social media platforms , and e-commerce websites.

iOS Safari Push Notifications have been a highly requested feature for some time, and Apple has been working to improve the functionality of this feature in recent updates. With the release of iOS 16, web push notifications were enabled, allowing websites to send notifications to users even when they are not actively using Safari. This update has made Safari Push Notifications more useful and relevant to users, and it is expected that more websites will adopt this feature in the future.

Safari Push Notifications are a way for websites to send notifications directly to users' Mac desktops, even when Safari isn't running. These notifications work similarly to push notifications for apps, displaying the website icon and notification text that users can click to go right to the website.

Safari Push Notifications are triggered remotely via the Apple Push Notification Service (APNs), an Apple-exclusive technology. They are delivered to customers when Safari is not open. Local notifications, on the other hand, are set by a W3C standard and triggered locally using JavaScript.

To enable Safari Push Notifications on newer versions of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, users must first give permission to receive notifications from the website. Once permission is granted, the website can send notifications to users even when they are not currently browsing the site.

It is important to note that if a website fails to present push notifications to the user immediately after the service worker receives them, Safari may revoke the push notification permission for the site. Therefore, it is crucial for websites to ensure that push notifications are delivered promptly.

In addition to Safari Push Notifications, there are other types of push notifications available, such as web push notifications. These notifications are available on other browsers and platforms, not just Safari. They work similarly to Safari Push Notifications, allowing websites to send notifications to users' devices even when the website is not open.

Overall, Safari Push Notifications are a powerful tool for websites to engage with their users and keep them up-to-date with the latest content and updates. By using this technology, websites can increase user engagement and drive traffic to their site.

Safari notifications are a type of push notification that allows website owners to send notifications to their users even when Safari is not running. These notifications work in a similar way to push notifications for apps and display the website icon and notification text. Users can click on the notification to go directly to the website.

Safari notifications are made possible by the Push API and Notifications API. The Push API is used to subscribe users to receive notifications from a website. When a user subscribes, a unique endpoint is created for that user. This endpoint is used by the website to send notifications to the user.

The Notifications API is used to display the notification to the user. When a notification is received, it is displayed on the user's device. The notification can include an icon, title, message, and action buttons. The user can click on the notification to perform the action specified by the website.

Safari notifications are delivered using the Apple Push Notification service (APNs). When a website sends a notification, it is first sent to the APNs. The APNs then delivers the notification to the user's device. This ensures that the notification is delivered securely and reliably.

To use Safari notifications, website owners need to have a valid SSL certificate and create a push package. The push package contains the website's icon, website URL, and other information needed to send notifications. Once the push package is created, website owners can use the Push API and Notifications API to subscribe users and send notifications.

In summary, Safari notifications are a powerful tool for website owners to engage with their users. They are made possible by the Push API and Notifications API and delivered using the Apple Push Notification service. Website owners can use Safari notifications to send timely and relevant notifications to their users, even when Safari is not running.

Once you've allowed notifications for a website, you'll start receiving notifications whenever there's new content or updates available. You can manage all of your notification settings by going to the "Notifications" section in your Mac's System Preferences.

It's important to note that not all websites offer Safari Push Notifications, and some may require you to subscribe or sign up to receive them. Additionally, if you ever want to stop receiving notifications from a website, simply go back to the "Websites" tab in Safari Preferences and select "Deny" from the drop-down menu next to the website.

In summary, setting up Safari Notifications on your Mac is a quick and easy process that can help keep you informed and up-to-date with your favorite websites. Just remember to customize your notification settings to your liking and be mindful of which websites you allow notifications from.

These notifications are delivered directly to the user's desktop or mobile device, allowing them to stay up-to-date with the latest news, promotions, and events.

When a user receives a Safari Push Notification, they will see a banner notification on their screen. The banner will display the website's icon and notification text, which the user can click to go directly to the website. The notification will also be added to the Notification Center, where the user can view it later.

In addition to the banner notification, users can also receive Safari Push Notifications on their Home Screen and Lock Screen. On the Home Screen, users can add a website to their device's home screen, which will display the website's icon and notification text. On the Lock Screen, users can see a preview of the notification, which they can swipe to view or dismiss.

Developers can enable Safari push notifications on their web pages and web apps using the Push API, Notifications API, and Service Workers. With Safari push notifications, users can receive notifications even when their Safari browser is not running.

To send web push notifications, developers need to update their webpage to subscribe users and handle notifications and update their server to send push notifications. Developers can use the Apple Push Notifications Service to send notifications to their website users, right on their Mac desktop.

Safari push notifications work just like push notifications for apps. They display the website icon and notification text, which users can click to go right to the website. Siri can also provide suggestions to users in search, News, Safari, and other apps using on-device information that the app contributes through the Notifications API.

Developers can add web push to the following:

  • Home Screen web apps in iOS 16.4 or later
  • Webpages in Safari 16 for macOS 13 or later

Developers can generate remote notifications from a server that they manage using Push API code that works in Safari and other browsers.

To get started with developing Safari push notifications, developers can refer to the Apple Developer Documentation and the WWDC22 video on Web Push for Safari.

In summary, developers can use the Push API, Notifications API, and Service Workers to enable Safari push notifications on their web pages and web apps. By updating their webpage and server, developers can send notifications to their website users, right on their Mac desktop.

Safari Push Notifications have been enhanced and updated in recent years to provide a better user experience. At the WWDC 2022 event, Apple announced several new features, including a completely redesigned lock screen with widgets and enhancements to several system apps, including Safari. These enhancements have made it easier for website owners to send push notifications to their users.

One of the most significant enhancements to Safari Push Notifications is the ability to send web push notifications. This feature was introduced in iOS 16 and allows website owners to send push notifications to their users even when Safari isn't running. Users can click on the notification to go directly to the website.

Another enhancement is the ability to sync Safari extensions across devices. This is particularly useful for users who use Safari on multiple devices. With extension syncing, users can easily access their favorite extensions on any device.

Safari Push Notifications have also been updated to support Wing, Apple's new augmented reality platform. With Wing, users can receive push notifications that are relevant to their location. For example, users can receive push notifications about nearby restaurants or events.

In addition, Safari Push Notifications have been updated to support Maps. With Maps integration, users can receive push notifications about traffic conditions, nearby points of interest, and more. This feature is particularly useful for users who are travelling or exploring a new city.

Overall, the enhancements and updates to Safari Push Notifications have made it easier for website owners to send push notifications to their users and for users to receive relevant notifications. These updates have also made Safari a more powerful and versatile browser.

Focus Mode is a feature introduced in iOS 15 that allows users to customize their notification settings based on their current activity or location. This feature can be accessed through the Settings app and enables users to create custom Focus Modes such as Personal, Work, or Sleep.

When a user enables Focus Mode, notifications from certain apps or people can be silenced or allowed, depending on the user's preferences. Users can also choose to have their Focus Mode turn on automatically at certain times or when they are in a specific location.

Safari Notifications can also be customized through the Settings app. Users can choose to receive notifications from specific websites or disable them altogether. Additionally, users can customize the appearance and sound of Safari Notifications to better suit their preferences.

Enabling Safari Push Notifications requires users to visit a website and add it to their Home Screen. Once added, users can receive push notifications from the website even when Safari is closed. This feature can be useful for receiving important updates or notifications from websites without having to constantly check them manually.

Overall, the combination of Focus Mode and Safari Notifications provides users with greater control over their notification settings and can help reduce distractions and interruptions throughout the day.

Sometimes, Safari push notifications may not work as intended. Here are some common issues and solutions to troubleshoot Safari push notifications:

Permissions

If a user accidentally denies permission for a website to send push notifications, they won't receive any notifications from that website. To fix this, the user can go to Safari settings and allow notifications for that website. Alternatively, the website can prompt the user to allow notifications again.

Sometimes, a website may not be configured correctly to send push notifications. The website owner should check their code and make sure they are using the correct APIs and certificates. Apple provides a demo of how to send Safari push notifications on their developer website.

If the website owner is still having trouble, they can post on Apple's developer forums to get help from other developers and Apple engineers. The forums are a great resource for troubleshooting Safari push notifications and other development issues.

It's also possible that the user's device is experiencing issues with notifications in general. In this case, the user can try restarting their device or checking their notification settings to make sure they are correctly configured.

Overall, Safari push notifications can be a powerful tool for engaging with users and providing timely updates. By following best practices and troubleshooting any issues that arise, website owners can ensure that their push notifications are effective and helpful to users.

Safari Push Notifications: Everything you need to know

Web push notifications for Safari were introduced in OS X Maverick. The Apple Push Notification Service is used to send precise and clickable messages to your website users on their Mac desktop, even when the Safari browser is not running. Safari push notifications work the same way as app push notifications. They display your website icon and notification text, which users can click to go straight to your website.

An important point to note is that push notifications can be sent to Safari on a Mac rather than an iPhone. But don’t worry, there is an alternative.

There are two types of website notification:

  • Safari Push Notifications , an Apple-exclusive technology that is triggered remotely via the Apple Push Notification Service (APNs). These are delivered to customers when Safari is not open.
  • Local notifications , set by a W3C standard and triggered locally using JavaScript. These can lead to notifications being displayed as long as the website is in an open tab.

This article is essentially about the Safari push notifications.

To integrate push notifications into your website, you first present a user interface through which the user can register to receive notifications. If the user agrees, Safari will contact your website and request their credentials in the form of a file called a push package. The push package also contains notification resources that are used in OS X and data that is used to communicate with a web service that you have configured. If the push packet is valid, you will be given a unique identifier for the user on the device, known as a device token. The user receives the notification when you send the combination of this device token and your message or payload to APNs.

After receiving the notification, the user can click on it to open a webpage of their choice in Safari.

Managing notifications: deactivation

Wondering how to stop notifications in Safari? By default, users visiting websites that have Safari push notifications enabled see a banner at the top of the window the first time they visit the website. Here, the user can choose whether notifications should be allowed from the website. These notifications appear as the default notifications for the Notification Center when the page publishes new content or manually sends a notification, including the appearance of a banner in the upper right corner of the screen and an entry in the Notification Center.

Web notifications look and work like any other notification. Its appearance can be adjusted by the user in the system settings so that it is displayed as a temporary banner that disappears by itself, or as a warning that must be clicked to close.

The user can also turn off notifications across the service or system using “Do Not Disturb”, a feature introduced in iOS 6 that appears in OS X Mavericks on the Mac. As on mobile devices, users can set “Do Not Disturb” to turn off incoming notifications for a specified period of time, for example when the screen is asleep or during presentations.

What you should know about push notifications from Apple

With the opening of the App Store in 2008, Apple announced that it would set up a central push notification service with which apps can react to updates from external services without having to remain active in the background, constantly “listening” and using the battery.

However, Apple grossly underestimated the overwhelming demand for apps and push notifications, kicking the company back to the drawing board after a stress test beta program involving the Associated Press and other app developers, and delayed rolling out push notifications on iOS 3.0.

In 2010, Apple brought push notifications to the Mac as an API, first to support FaceTime notifications and then more generally as a public API in OS X Lion 2011.

You can easily choose whether you want notifications to appear as banners, warnings, or not at all. You can also view them on the lock screen and control how many recent items are shown in the Safari Notification Center.

Control which notifications you receive from websites

manage safari notifications

What to Know

  • In the Safari menu, select Preferences > Websites . Choose Notifications in the left pane.
  • Use the menu next to any website that has requested permission to send notifications to allow or deny the request.
  • Clear the box next to Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications to prevent sites from asking permission.

This article explains how to manage website push notifications in Safari for OS X. It includes information on viewing notification-related settings in the Notification Center . This information applies to Safari 9.x and above on Mac OS X.

Change the Safari Permissions

A website must ask your permission before it can push notifications to your desktop, usually as a pop-up question when you visit the site. While useful, these notifications can prove unwieldy and intrusive.

Here's how to deny or allow permissions for push notifications:

Go to the Safari menu and select Preferences .

Select Websites .

Click Notifications in the left menu pane.

The right side of the window contains a list of the sites that asked for permission to send you notifications. Use the menu to the right to either allow or deny those requests.

The  Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications option is enabled by default. This option allows websites to ask you if you want notifications, usually when you first visit their site. To disable this option and prevent sites from asking permission to show alerts, clear the check box.

To reset a site's permissions, select it and click Remove . The next time you visit the URL, it asks for permission again, assuming you left the previous option active.

Change Notification Settings

To view more notification-related settings in the Notification Center:

Open System Preferences either by clicking its icon in the Dock or selecting it from the Finder's Apple menu.

Click Notifications .

Select  Safari  from the list of applications in the left menu pane.

Notification preferences specific to the browser appear on the right side of the window. To turn off all notifications, turn off the Allow Notifications from Safari toggle switch.

The Safari alert style section contains three options, each accompanied by an image.

  • None : Disables Safari alerts from displaying on the desktop while keeping notifications active in the Notification Center.
  • Banners : Informs you when a new push notification is available.
  • Alerts : Notifies you and includes relevant buttons. Alerts stay on the screen until you dismiss them.

Below this section are five more settings, each accompanied by a check box and enabled by default. These settings are as follows:

  • Show notifications on lock screen : When enabled, push notifications generated by your allowed websites display when your Mac is locked.
  • Show notification preview : Specify whether macOS shows previews (which contain more detail about the alert) always or only when the computer is unlocked.
  • Show in Notification Center : Leave this option on to see alerts you might have missed by opening the Notification Center in the upper-right corner of the Finder.
  • Badge app icon : When enabled, the number of Safari alerts to be viewed displays in a red circle overlaying the browser's icon on the Dock.
  • Play sound for notifications : When enabled, an audio alert plays each time you receive a notification.

How to block or allow browser notifications from any website

By David Nield

Updated on Mar 22, 2023 10:30 AM EDT

5 minute read

Notifications from apps and operating systems aren’t all you have to deal with these days. Websites are also keen to keep you informed and up to date with their news, adding to the deluge of pop-ups constantly hitting your devices.

Moderation is key to making sure these alerts are useful instead of distracting. You can choose which sites are allowed to ping you by digging into the notifications settings on your device (they’re usually on the list of general settings), but for real control you’ll want to adjust the options in your browser of choice.

Keep in mind that iOS devices don’t allow notifications from websites, so you won’t even have to worry about this if you’re carrying an iPhone in your pocket.

Manage the settings for Google Chrome notifications

Any site that wants to send you alerts will prompt you to deny or accept the request right away. But if you change your mind later, you can tweak these settings by clicking the padlock icon to the left of the address bar. Choose Site settings , find Notifications , and select Allow or Block from the adjacent dropdown menu next to decide if the website you’re on can send you alerts via your browser.

Another way to get to these settings is to click the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the Chrome interface, then go to Settings , Privacy and security , Site settings , and Notifications . Here you’ll see a list of all the sites where you’ve previously blocked or allowed notifications, and you can make changes by clicking the three vertical dots next to any site name.

[Related: The best internet browsers you’ve never heard of ]

The same methods work in Chrome for Android, too. Tap the padlock icon in the address bar, then go to Permissions to set the notification rules for the open site. You can also tap the three dots in the top right, and go to Settings , Site settings , and Notifications to see a list of all the options you’ve configured so far.

How to disable or enable Firefox notifications

When you open up a site that wants to send you notifications in Mozilla’s browser, you’ll see a little speech bubble icon appear in the address bar, just to the left of the URL. You can easily ignore this and get on with your browsing, but if you click on it you’ll be able to block or allow notifications from that site.

To review all your notification settings, open the Firefox menu via the three horizontal lines in the top right corner, then choose Settings , followed by Privacy & Security . Scroll down to find the Permissions heading, look for Notifications , and click the Settings bubble to its right. You can use the emerging window to change the listed websites’ permissions and even stop the speech bubble from appearing altogether by checking the box next to Block new requests asking to allow notifications .

In Firefox for Android, you’ll see a prompt to allow or block notifications from individual sites. You can also manage alerts for the site you’re on by tapping the three dots in the corner of the Firefox interface, and then going to Settings , Site permissions , and Notifications .

Allow or deny Safari notifications

Websites that want to send you notifications in Apple’s built-in browser will ask for permission to do so when you open them up, or shortly after. If you want to stop these permission prompts from popping up at all, go to Safari , Settings , and Websites . There, choose Notifications from the left-hand sidebar and uncheck the box labeled Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications .

You can use the same dialog box to change your mind about a website that you’ve blocked or allowed permissions from in the past. Just click the small drop-down box next to the website in question and choose Allow or Deny from the list.

Change the Microsoft Edge notification settings

When a site wants to send you notifications in Microsoft Edge , you’ll first see a small pop-up box that lets you choose whether to allow or block them. You can also change this site-specific setting at any point by clicking the site information icon (a padlock or “i” symbol) on the far left of the address bar, choosing Permissions for this site , finding the Notifications option, and adjusting the options in the dropdown menu to its right.

[Related: Five simple tricks to speed up your browser]

To look at a list of all the sites you’ve allowed or denied notification privileges, click the three dots in the top right corner of the Edge interface, then Settings , Cookies and site permissions , and Notifications . You can manually add sites to the blocked or allowed list, and edit the settings for sites that are already there.

In Edge for Android, you can tap the padlock or info icon on the left of the address bar, then choose Site settings to modify the permissions of a site, including notifications. You can also tap the three dots at the bottom of the interface and go to Settings , Site permissions , and Notifications to see a list of permissions for all sites.

How to enable or disable Opera notifications

Those who surf the web using Opera will get a pop-up dialog whenever a site wants to send you a notification for the first time—this lets you choose whether to allow or block alerts from the site. To change this setting later for an individual site, click the padlock icon to the left of the address bar and turn the toggle switch next to Notifications off or on.

To see the settings for every site you’ve visited, click the cog icon on the Opera browser’s left-hand sidebar. From there, choose Privacy & security , Site settings , and Notifications . You can adjust the configuration for sites already listed, and add new entries with the Add button.

When it comes to Opera for Android, again you can tap the padlock icon in the address bar, and go to Site settings to control notification permissions. To see the settings for all sites, tap the Opera icon in the lower right corner of the interface and go to Settings , Site settings , and Notifications .

The icon is meaningless. Evidently you loaded to a website asking if you would like it to send you Notifications, and agreed to have it send you Notifications. The correct response to such requests is "just say no."

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community :

Beware spontaneously appearing, unsolicited popups demanding immediate action. Think before you click .

  • The same goes for website Notifications — attention-getting banners that appear at the top right corner of your screen. Safari gives you a great degree of control over them: Customize website notifications in Safari on Mac. Most of those Notifications are simply annoying, but some are intended to frighten and deceive you into installing something nefarious.

Manage Safari Notifications by reading those links. There is no need to download anything just to manage annoying Notifications. Uninstall whatever it was you installed.

When you're online, sometimes you prefer uninterrupted sessions. Having your Chrome notifications going at full blast can be disruptive. Some websites also have a history of being abusers of spam . But no matter the reasoning, you can turn Chrome's notifications off to quiet down your browsing.

If Google Chrome is your default browser of choice or you're browsing on your trusty Chromebook , you can navigate to the settings to change your notification preferences. Our tutorial below will show you how to toggle off notifications entirely and how to block them for specific websites.

How to turn off Chrome notifications on PC

You can turn off all notifications from Chrome's settings or disable them for specific sites. Our guide goes over both methods. We use a Windows computer in this example, but Chromebook and MacOS users can also follow along.

To turn your notifications back on, return to chrome://settings/content/notifications and select Sites can ask to send notifications . You can also choose one of the three options: Collapse all requests in the address bar , Collapse unwanted requests (recommended) , and Expand all requests to control how you want sites to send you notifications; we recommend selecting one of the three options if you opt-in for a less busy experience on Chrome, but still prefer to receive notifications. Essentially, it hides the notifications by default if you select one of the collapse options.

To turn off Chrome notifications for specific sites:

For websites that you've turned notifications on:

To undo the Block action, navigate to the Customized behaviors section, click the Three-dot icon next to the site under Not allowed to send notifications, and select Allow .

You can also enable Use quieter messaging to block notification prompts (if you have this option under Default behavior ). A website will ask to send notifications, permitting it to send notifications without pop-ups. To view the notification, click the Bell icon at the top right next to the address bar. You can also choose to grant permission to specific websites this way.

How to disable Google Chrome's pop-up blocker

Not all pop-ups are intrusive ads, Chrome

How to turn off Chrome notifications on mobile

You can turn off Chrome notifications via app settings, or through Chrome itself. Typically, you won't need to do this if you've disabled permissions for Chrome, but if you've enabled notification permissions, we will walk you through how to turn them off below. In this example, we use an Android phone, but you can follow these steps if you own a tablet, iPad, or iPhone.

  • Open Google Chrome and navigate to the Three-dot icon at the top right corner.
  • Select Site settings .
  • Tap on the toggle next to Notifications to turn it off. You can also tap Use quieter messaging to turn off the notification prompts.

If you're trying to turn off app notifications for Google Chrome, navigate to Settings > Notifications > Allow notifications (toggle off) in Chrome.

To turn notifications back on Android, go to Settings > Site Settings > Notifications > Notifications (toggle on). For sites registered on the Blocked list, tap on the site and select Allow notifications (toggle on).

If you're using Google Chrome on an iPad or iPhone, tap your Profile icon and go to Notifications . Notifications should be off by default, but if you've allowed them before, you can toggle them off using this method. You can return to this page to turn notifications back on, and once you've toggled them on, Chrome will prompt you to go to your iOS settings to enable notifications.

How to better manage notifications on your Android phone

It is time you take some steps to reduce the notification clutter on your Android phone

Still desire quieter Chrome sessions for longer periods?

Consider browsing in incognito mode. You won't receive notifications while in incognito mode. You can even protect your privacy by locking the incognito tab with a biometric . That way, you can enjoy an uninterrupted experience with maximum privacy, especially if you're working on a high-profile project you don't want others to see.

Doubling calculation speed and other new innovations in Google Sheets

Try Google Workspace at No Cost

Get a business email, all the storage you need, video conferencing, and more.

Snapshot : We’re making it easier and faster to format, calculate, and manage your data in Google Sheets, whether you’re just getting started or are already a Sheets expert. Today we’re sharing the latest advancements in Sheets that will help you be more productive, from everyday tasks to complex projects.

"Google Sheets is our preferred spreadsheet application, giving us a real-time solution for collaboration to activate data-driven decisions."   — Chris Montfot, Head of Strategic Operations for Corporate Engineering, Robinhood ( read the blog )

Doubling calculation speed in Sheets

Building on improvements like smooth scrolling and expanded cell limits in Sheets, today we’re announcing that we’ve doubled the speed of calculation in Sheets on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge browsers, improving the experiences of running formulas, creating pivot tables, using conditional formatting, and more. Whether you’re a small business owner analyzing revenue, a finance leader managing millions of values , or a brand manager reviewing the latest orders of a product line , you want to see changes in your data reflected quickly. Regardless of how large your file is, or what type of calculation you’re trying to do — from the simplest of SUM calculations to a complex query — now your calculation can run significantly faster.

We’ve partnered with the Google Chrome team on this performance initiative and we’ve also delivered this improvement when using Sheets in the Edge browser. In the future, we expect these improvements to be available in Safari and Firefox as well. This improved calculation speed is made possible by WasmGC , a new web technology that enables faster code execution. You can learn more about how our engineering team achieved these improvements in this case study . In addition to calculation speed, we’re constantly exploring new ways to improve the Sheets experience. For instance, we’re currently working to reduce initial load time and improve copy/paste and filter performance.

New ways to get started quicker in Sheets

We’re also making it easier for you to start organizing your data in Sheets. Often just beginning to build a spreadsheet is a daunting task — no matter how experienced you are with data. To give you a head start, we announced the new side panel experience in Gemini for Workspace that allows you to chat with Gemini to summarize, analyze, and generate content. In Sheets, the side panel will leverage insights from your emails, documents, and more to build a contextually relevant spreadsheet, and provide an automatic summary of the spreadsheet you’re working on.

"We've also been able to speed up the planning phase of our campaigns with Help me organize . By entering a simple prompt like, ‘Create a project plan for a full-funnel marketing campaign around a spring product launch’, we get a first draft of a plan in Sheets to kickstart the project."  — Ranjan Roy, VP of Strategy, Adore Me ( read the blog )

We recently also announced pre-built tables so that you always have a starting point for organizing your data. Whether it’s project management, event planning, inventory management, or something else, you never have to build a spreadsheet from scratch again.

Faster ways to format and manage your data in Sheets

Structuring and polishing data in Sheets is now easier with the new tables feature . Let Sheets do the heavy lifting to format and organize data so that you don’t have to — tables will apply an improved design that includes column types, filters, color coding, dropdown menus, and more. So whether you’re a recruiter managing applicant data, a marketer building a campaign launch tracker, or a salesperson tracking the different stages of open opportunities, tables will automatically align all inputs, reducing the need for manual adjustments. Plus, tables will ensure all entered data has the right formatting based on the column type that you select.

Improving project management with custom alerts

People love using Sheets because of how seamless it is for entire teams to work on a single spreadsheet together. Teams regularly use Sheets to track complex projects, budgets, schedules and more, and it’s often challenging to stay on top of the many changes that happen, especially when there is so much collaboration happening. That’s why we’ve introduced conditional notifications , which allow you to create rules in spreadsheets that send email alerts when certain criteria are met. For example, a notification can be sent when a specific column’s value, such as the “Status” column, undergoes a change. Conditional notifications is just the start of automation in Sheets.

Driving change for our customers

From streamlining campaign planning to facilitating real-time collaboration, the power and scale of Sheets enables teams to be more productive, no matter where they are. With AI, Sheets goes beyond basic spreadsheet functionality and becomes a powerful tool for project management that enables strategic decision-making.

“It used to be challenging to keep track of where we were in the process but the Help me organize feature in Google Sheets has become our secret weapon, allowing us to design step-driven processes with unparalleled flexibility. Now, we have a unified place to build and organize plans, trackers, and timelines, and keep them up to date in real time."  - Tim Tochette, Owner & President, Attache ( read the blog )

We’re thrilled to see so many organizations — across technology , transportation , retail , healthcare , and more — relying on Sheets to drive their business or mission. Every day we hear from customers that Sheets has helped boost productivity for their employees and accelerate decision making on critical business initiatives. We’re committed to delivering more innovations to Sheets this year and beyond.
