Things to Do

The best winery day trips around los angeles, live music, ocean views, food trucks, and the most excellent wines to taste around los angeles..

Photo for: The Best Winery Day Trips around Los Angeles

Californians are spoiled for choices in Southern California. With Napa and Sonoma right at their doorstep, a wine tasting weekend away. is easy to do But if you're looking for a wine tasting that is closer to home? These nearby tasting rooms are great for a day trip, no matter what neighborhood in L.A. you stay in. Just a note, guys — whether you're driving for 45 minutes or two hours, you're going to need a designated driver. Happy sipping!

Malibu Wines (Malibu)

A trip to Malibu Wines is a rite of passage for Angelenos. It's easy to see why: the scenic vineyard and tasting room have plenty of grass for a picnic (you can bring food, but no alcohol); themed activities include Friday night karaoke, Sunday yoga and mimosas, and Thursday nights movies. The drinks behind the bar are swift and abundant. For something a bit more exciting, Malibu Wine Safari blends the experience of a zoo and a winery on its two-hour nature tour, where you can personally feed the animals while stopping to taste different Saddlerock Ranch wines.

los angeles winery tour

Rosenthal Winery (Malibu)

It's only fitting that a winery selling Malibu-grown wine has a stellar view of the ocean. One step into Rosenthal's Winery is an idyllic escape from L.A.'s fast-paced life (and you'll forget about the PCH congestion you've experienced to get there). Boasting beachside views, coastal breezes, and a comfortable outdoor seating area, this casual wine center is the ideal place for a weekend group tasting ($13 for four tastings). Live beach tunes permeate the courtyard with local live bands playing and there is a  food truck nearby.

los angeles winery tour

Cornell Wineries (Cornell)

Named after the town of Cornell, which is home to Agoura Hills, Cornell Winery is a luxurious tasting room that celebrates L.A. wines sourced from Monterey.

Adirondack chairs are spread outside. You can take a ride to the scenery before you step into the cabin. A gift shop and an art gallery welcome customers first before they turn into a pub. Tastings are $10 for five tastes of wine that you can enjoy at the bar or in the back room. If you want a bite to eat afterward, Old Place is a restaurant right next door (and run by the same people). It offers comfort food in a rustic environment.

los angeles winery tour

The Ojai Vineyard (Ojai)

The Ojai Vineyard is about an hour and a half away from Los Angeles, and there are a few great wine-tasting choices in the area. The Ojai Vineyard specializes in pinot noir, syrah, and a range of white wine varietals, offering more than 300 different bottles in their cozy dining room. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights spotlight Library flights (wines aged 10-20 years) and occasional food pairings are offered.

los angeles winery tour

CasaBarranca (Ojai)

CassaBarranca is another outstanding choice in Ojai. While a sprawling, ancient estate sits on the winery (and is available for private holiday rentals), the tasting room is located in downtown Ojai. Thirty imbibers drink certified organic, award-winning rieslings, available in two separate flights. Afterward, take a walk along the arcade, where you can find clothes, shops, and ice cream.

los angeles winery tour

Maurice Carrie Vineyard & Winery (Temecula)

A two-hour drive takes you to Temecula, a significant wine zone and Maurice Carrie Vineyard & Winery is a great place to start. The 91-acre vineyard produces mainly sparkling wine and white wine, although a range of dry red wines is also available. Visitors can have a picnic lunch. They also get to learn about the winemaking process and taste their excellent wines ($15 for five tastings), but be sure to try the winery's famous sourdough bread filled with oozing brie — feeds about five people, so bring your mates.

los angeles winery tour

Lorimar Vineyards & Wineries (Temecula)

Temecula is also host to Lorimar Vineyards & Winery, which boasts a Tuscan-style tasting room and breathtaking views of the Santa Ana Mountains and Mount Palomar. Tastings range from $14 to $25 and are best enjoyed on the idyllic patio, where live music is playing all weekend.

los angeles winery tour

Carhartt Vineyard (Los Olivos)

Los Olivos is another attractive wine tasting area, and Carhartt Vineyard is one of the most popular wine tasting locations. The family-owned and run winery is based in Santa Ynez, but you can taste their wares at the self-titled "world's smallest tasting room" in Los Olivos, where you'll typically stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow tasters. It is truly a wonderful environment in which to try the excellent range of Carhatt wines.

los angeles winery tour

The Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail

This is not a single winery, but a series of wine tasting rooms, which may be one of the best ways to experience Santa Barbara's rich wine culture. Half a dozen tasting rooms are located in the historic El Paseo complex, and even more so in the eclectic neighborhood. Visitors can pay for a flight at each tasting room, or a $150 membership card (decent for a round of free tastings at each one).

Matador Original Series

The 6 best wineries and tasting rooms in los angeles.

O nce upon a time, Los Angeles was known as The City of Vines. There were over 100 wine producers in the area. The success of the wine industry throughout California (which began in the 18th century with the Spanish missions) was built upon the labor of indigenous workers and other immigrants. Once the missions became secularized, both Mexican and European people established vineyards on those lands. One of those immigrants was Jean Louis Vignes, a Frenchman who cultivated 100 acres of vines and citrus in the original Pueblo of Los Angeles where Union Station is today.

When California became part of the United States in 1850, Los Angeles much more rural that it is today, and yet it was still the epicenter of California wine. By the 1850s and 60s, the progression of the wine industry was in full swing, with German winemakers Frohling and Kohler leading the way.

The wine industry took a big hit in the 1880s when Pierce’s disease (which kills the leaves on the grapevines) struck hard. Following that period, Prohibition , urbanization, and the proliferation of citrus farms marked the end of Los Angeles as the epicenter of California win e. But there are still Los Angeles wineries that are well worth a visit on your next trip.

Today, there’s a new chapter being written on Los Angeles wine production. Los Angeles wineries and tasting rooms are once again thriving in Los Angeles County, although most people probably consider Napa the true heart of California wine.

Along with a small group of winemakers dedicated to reviving interest in crafting wines of high quality from Los Angeles County fruit, other winemakers are opening tasting rooms, but growing or buying their fruit elsewhere. These Los Angeles wineries will surprise and delight you, and offer a urban setting to sip your wine — an interesting change of pace from the usual rural setting where vineyards are usually located. From chic Malibu tasting rooms to the oldest existing winery in Los Angeles, these five tasting rooms provide a selection of what’s available in The City of Vines.

The best Los Angeles wineries to visit

San antonio winery.

Photo: San Antonio Winery

San Antonio Winery has been located at the original address on Lamar Street since 1917, though the vineyards are long gone. Owned by the Riboli family, the namesake wines produced under the Maddalena label pay tribute to the matriarch of the winery. Maddalena also had the vision to start a restaurant on site (called, appropriately, Maddalena Restaurant) and to purchase vineyards in Napa Valley, Monterey County, and Paso Robles.

San Antonio Winery has a large selection of wines including sparkling wines, white and red wines, and sweet wines. The winery has survived the urbanization of Los Angeles, Pierce’s Disease, and prohibition, by producing wine for the Catholic Church. San Antonio Winery is a look back into Los Angeles’ golden age of winemaking. Don’t miss it.

The winery is open for tastings and tours. Both the winery and the restaurant are open daily.

Strange Family Vineyards

Strange Family Vineyards has a beautiful tasting room located off of Pacific Coast Highway about a mile from the Malibu Pier. There is also seating outdoors and the tasting room is dog friendly. Inside there’s a map of the Santa Rita AVA (American Viticulture Area) where the estate vineyards are located with soil samples should you care to educate yourself on what type of vines grow best in different environments.

Strange Family Vineyards produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from organic estate fruit grown in the Santa Rita vineyards. They also make sparkling wine in the methode champenoise, in other words, the traditional process used to make champagne in France. Three different bottles of sparkling wines are produced: a cuvée, blanc de blanc, and blanc de noir. Fruit for the winery’s Syrah is sourced in Santa Barbara County.

Tastings are $32 per person and reservations are recommended especially on weekends. Grab a glass or a bottle and settle into one of the cozy sofas tucked inside the tasting room.

Cavaletti Vineyards

Cavaletti Vineyards is one of several winemakers in Ventura County with a passion for bringing back the high-quality wines of the region. The tasting room, located in Moorpark, about an hour from Los Angeles, is a no frills experience that may feature the vineyard owner’s dog and fermenting fruit nearby. Cavatelli farms and sources all fruit from nearby Ventura County, Los Angeles County, and the Santa Ynez Valley.

Cavaletti produces a wide variety of wines from lesser known varieties like Alicante Bouschet, and Nebbiolo, as well as the more well known varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Currently, there are sixteen different bottlings. Where: 165 Poindexter Ave Suite D, Moorpark, CA 93021

Angeleno Wine Company

Angeleno Winery-interior bar-los angeles wineries

Angeleno Winery, along with Cavaletti, is dedicated to putting Los Angeles back on the map as a wine destination. The winery sources fruit from small, family-owned, Los Angeles county vineyards and strives to make wines that are elegant and balanced, reflecting the character of Los Angeles, a region where the desert meets the sea.

Angeleno Winery specializes in wine varieties that only the most dedicated wine experts will be familiar with, including Graciano, Verdejo, and Tannat, and only in small batches: The winery produces around 2000 cases per year.

The winery is pet friendly and open on weekends only. It also allows outside food so bring your lunch or order something to be delivered after you arrive. Reservations are recommended.

Malibu Wines And Beer Garden

If you’re looking for more to drink than just wine, Malibu Wines and Beer Garden might be the place for you. The Mission-style building is almost 100 years old and was built by a silent film star. Weekends are busy with activities like yoga in the garden, local craft sales, and food trucks. You should also know that the current owners have an 1100 acre ranch where they grow all the fruit for the Saddlerock Estate label wines.

It’s worth a visit just to taste wines made from grapes grown in the Malibu AVA. Try the estate sparkling rosé. The other label is Saddlerock––those grapes are from Northern California vineyards. Malibu Wine Hikes is the winery’s sister company, which specializes in excursions that end in gorgeous views with a bottle of wine and many photo ops. The hikes actually take you through the Saddlerock vineyards.

Summer Somewhere Wines

Summer Somewhere owner Stacy, a designer, and Billy, a winemaker, developed their flagship rosé of Pinot Noir for their wedding, which eventually turned into a thriving wine business. The couple source fruit from vineyards located in Santa Barbara County, an area known for excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Summer Somewhere has a tiny tasting room within the swanky Fred Segal boutique in Malibu. They serve wine by the glass or the bottle specializing in rosé wines made in the Provencal style. Though known for their flagship rosé they also produce a Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc, three bottlings of  Pinot Noir, two red blends, and a luscious ripe Syrah.

Summer Somewhere at Fred Segal is located right across the street from Strange Family Vineyards tasting room so you could easily stop by both on the same trip.

Two glasses of rose and some mixed nuts and olives at Esters Wine Shop & Bar

Where to go wine tasting in Los Angeles

Spend a relaxed afternoon or evening tasting reds, whites, oranges and rosés at these excellent L.A. wine shops and bars.

Patricia Kelly Yeo

Whether you consider yourself a wine dilettante or an amateur when it comes to all things fermented grapes, a wine tasting is a wonderful thing to behold. But when a boozy weekend getaway to California wine country isn’t in the cards and you’re tired of day tripping up to the few vineyards in Malibu, these local spots should do the trick. As with wineries, you’ll pay a fee at these shops and wine bars to enjoy these breezy flights, with a chance to walk away a little more knowledgeable about what makes a great bottle of red, white or even orange wine.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best places to go wine tasting in L.A.

1.  domaine la.

  • Liquor stores

Domaine LA

Long before natural wine was all the rage, Jill Bernheimer’s Melrose shop had cultivated a fierce and extensive collection of pétillant naturel, a.k.a. pet-nat. From bottle to bottle, this class of wine varies in effervescence and offers a host of funky flavors and aromas—though, if you’re no stranger to this city’s wine bars, you probably know this by now. For tastings, Sunday is the day to go, when Domaine uncorks five to six wines from a given growing region or country, or perhaps a particular style. The atmosphere is laid-back and conversational, so bring a friend or two and hang or pick up your favorite for your next social gathering.

When: Sun 2–5pm Cost: $15 for five tastings Reservation needed: No Snacks: No

2.  Esters Wine Shop & Bar

  • Santa Monica

Esters Wine Shop & Bar

Though this stylish Santa Monica wine bar typically sells wines by the glass alongside a full food menu, it also offers tasting all day on Sundays curated by in-house sommelier Randall Middleton, plus the opportunity to try a different rare and vintage wines each Monday evening. On Sundays, tasting includes a flight of four wines and a small cheese pairing; exact bottles for each event can be found on Esters’s online calendar .

When: Sun noon–9pm, Mon 4–10pm Cost: $25 on Sundays, $25–35 per glass on Mondays  Reservation needed: No Snacks: Yes

3.  Total Wine & More

  • Thousand Oaks

Total Wine & More

This national chain with locations in Redondo Beach, Long Beach, Pasadena, Northridge and Woodland Hills has “total” in its name for a reason—it carries everything from bargain bottles to high-end magnums. Each week, Total Wine hosts sampling hours, where guests can try up to five different wines, with exact bottles changing on a weekly basis. About once a month, Total Wine also hosts $20 wine classes, though these sell out online two to three months in advance—so plan and book ahead for something a little more substantial.

When: Thu 2–6pm, Fri 2–8pm, Sat noon–6pm Cost: Flights cost a nominal single-cent fee (it would be free, but state laws dictate that retail shops must charge something) Reservation needed: No Snacks: No

4.  Wally’s Beverly Hills

  • Beverly Hills

Wally’s Beverly Hills

Known for its truly impeccable selection of international wines, this upmarket Beverly Hills wine bar with a second outpost in Santa Monica offers occasional ticketed tastings—check their website calendar for future dates. The number of wines offered vary, but it’s generally never less than four wines and it could be as many as nine or 10. The focus is often on one region, or a broader theme like “eclectic,” and is usually led by a vintner or other knowledgeable industry representative.

When: Varies Cost: $50+, depending on event Reservation needed: Yes  Snacks: Yes

5.  The Wine House

The Wine House

Directly off the 405, this wine lover’s paradise in West L.A. offers a newly opened upstairs restaurant (the Wine House Kitchen) as well as a warehouse of wines organized by country with countless varieties and a wide range of price points. From time to time, the Wine House hosts scheduled tasting events; previously, the shop also had an automated in-store tasting dispenser, though it remains closed until further notice.

When: Varies, but typically after store hours—see the Wine House’s classes and events page for more details. Cost: $45+  Reservation needed: Yes Snacks: Yes

6.  K&L Wine Merchants

K&L Wine Merchants

One of three locations in California (the others are in Redwood City and San Francisco), K&L’s wine selection in Hollywood is global by design but heavy on French, Italian and Californian staples. The selection of bubbles is divine—you’ll find everything from well-known champagne producers to sparkling wines and cava from smaller houses. Each Friday tasting includes a selection of five wines, while Saturday tastings often feature up to 10.

When: Fri 4–6pm, Sat 3–6pm Cost: $15–45  Reservation needed: No Snacks: No

7.  Wine Stop

  • Downtown Arts District

Though this locally run shop with a focus on ethically sourced, more sustainably produced wine has other locations in Silver Lake and Echo Park, only the Arts District flagship offers Thursday evening tastings of unique wines alongside three cheese pairings. Though the tastings are currently on pause until February 2023, interested parties can then buy tickets online and RSVP once they're being held again.

When: Thu 5–8:30pm Cost: $25  Reservation needed: Yes  Snacks: Yes, cheese and charcuterie

8.  BevMo!

  • West Hollywood

BevMo!

We know, BevMo! is kind of the Barnes & Noble of this list, but chains carry good wine, too. Each location offers their own flight options for wine tasting, and while there’s no lounge atmosphere or mood music, these tastings are ideal if you’re looking to discover a bottle to bring to a weekend dinner party. Tastings will vary by location, but usually include five to six wines. When: Fri 4–7pm Cost:  5 cents per flight Reservation needed: No Snacks:  No.

Top 10 Wineries to Visit in Southern California

  • by DEVIN PARR

Southern California Wine Country has a rich history dating back to the 1700s when Franciscan missionary, Father Junipero Sera, established the first known vineyard in California—in San Diego. The past few centuries have seen immense growth of Southern California’s grape growing and winemaking scene, as many sub-regions have emerged, each with its own defining microclimate and winemaking culture.

Take a road trip with us as we outline ten of our favorite Southern California wineries, from Ojai to San Diego and everywhere in between.

If you love the mountains

Ojai Mountain Estate

Oak Mountain

36522 Via Verde, Temecula, CA 92592, (951) 699-9102

There’s something especially romantic about sipping in a wine cave. If you’re up for this unique experience, head to the elaborate, underground tasting room at Oak Mountain in Temecula. As Southern California’s sole subterranean mined wine cave, you can enjoy their Mediterranean-style wines and artisan charcuterie boards in the naturally climate-controlled environment. You’ll find interesting varietals, from Mourvedre to Pinotage, alongside classics like Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. What’s more, this impressive wine cave even has a Cave Cafe and a Distillery, all hidden below Oak Mountains vineyards!

Did you know just outside of Los Angeles you will find some of the most intriguing and hidden, award-winning wine regions in the country? Here are 5 great wine tasting day trips close to Los Angeles.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, sometimes all you need is a day to recharge and slip away to sip world-class wines in the beautiful vineyards, wine villages, and wineries surrounding LA.

For a day trip or a long weekend centered around great wine in the Los Angeles area, we head to four acclaimed Southern California wine regions:

  • Santa Barbara Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)
  • City of Santa Barbara
  • Temecula Valley

los angeles winery tour

1. Santa Barbara County Wine Country (Santa Ynez Valley)

Nestled on a pristine stretch of California’s central coastline, just 1 ½ hours north of Los Angles, Santa Barbara County’s Wine Country offers world-class wines in a magnificent setting.

Santa Barbara Wine Country is known for its beautiful vineyards and many wine trails located among the County’s rolling hills and picturesque vineyards. There are over 250 wineries and over 70 different varietals grown in the region.

The transverse nature of the Santa Ynez Valley lends itself to a diverse range of wines produced here. Santa Barbara Wine Country and its acclaimed AVAs keep demonstrating that Santa Barbara is a world-class cool climate wine region and rival to its more well-known cousins up north (Napa & Sonoma).

Santa Barbara has established a reputation for world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, but you’ll also find deep, rich Bordeaux, Rhône, Spanish and Italian varietals.

The diverse microclimates create 7 distinct certified American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) that are unique in geography, soil structure and climate, creating some of California’s most exciting and delicious wines.

Wine Villages

In addition to the spectacular countryside Vineyards and Wineries, Santa Barbara County offers a wealth of charming towns, each with its unique vibe and urban wineries and tasting rooms. These wine villages are all within a short driving distance of each other:

Just 80 miles north of Los Angeles you will find one of America’s most beautiful cities and one of my favorite destinations. Known as “America’s Riveria” Santa Barbara offers dazzling beaches, soaring mountains, and a vibrant, unique, and diverse wine and culinary scene.

This urban environment differs from the surrounding vineyards and rolling hills of Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country (Santa Barbara County Wine Country)

With over 30 wine tasting rooms located in the City, Santa Barbara is home to numerous outdoor patio wine hangouts, breweries, shops, art galleries, museums, and street art all within walking distance of each other. Tasting fees vary per winery but are typically $15 – $20 to taste 4 to 5 wines.

There are 3 distinctive wine tasting neighborhoods in Santa Barbara.

The eclectic Funk Zone offers a hip young vibe to sip wine and craft beer. The Funk Zone is in a repurposed warehouse district adjacent to the Pacific Ocean just off lower State Street (Santa Barbara’s Main Street).

You can choose from over 16 local wineries and tasting rooms along with colorful murals, shops, art galleries, craft breweries, a distillery, and restaurants.

Presidio Neighborhood

The Presidio Neighborhood is located downtown in the heart of Santa Barbara on State Street. The area is home to wine tasting rooms featuring local award-winning wines, restaurants, museums, art galleries and boutique shops.

Nestled among the historical site of the last of the Spanish fortresses, the Presidio Neighborhood offers the opportunity to explore the history of Santa Barbara, along with experiencing some of the area’s finest food and wine.

3. Temecula Valley

Just a short distance south of` Los Angeles and near San Diego, and Orange County is Southern California’s Temecula Valley Wine Country.  Temecula is known for its laidback atmosphere where you can experience wonderful wines with beautiful views. The wineries include everything from small boutique family-owned wineries to large, sophisticated tasting rooms. The hospitality industry is thriving here, with restaurants, hotels, golf courses, breweries, distilleries and even a casino.

Temecula offers incredible curated activities including wine tours and epic hot air balloon experiences.

This warm region is cooled by Pacific Ocean wind and fog that flows through the “Rainbow Gap” of the Santa Margarita Mountains. The Valley has almost 50 wineries located among the region’s rolling hills and valleys producing a variety of wines, including award-winning and artisan Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Grapes that originate in warmer climates, like Sangiovese and Tempranillo, also do well.

Old Town Temecula is the historical hub of Temecula Valley. This charming walkable district includes restaurants, shops, beer, and wine tasting rooms, museums, speakeasies, outdoor art, a performance theater, and vibrant nightlife.

4. Malibu Wine Country

Malibu’s close proximity to Los Angeles makes for an easy, memorable and fun day of wine tasting.

Malibu is well known for its beautiful beaches, rocky cliffs, surfers, movie stars  and mansions. But more recently, it  has become known for its celebrated local wineries and tasting rooms.

This wine region is nestled within the Santa Monica Mountains, stretching between the Malibu coast and Mulholland highway to the north. The Malibu AVA is small with only a handful of wineries and tasting rooms to visit.

The wineries and tasting rooms are divided between the better known coastal areas and the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains with stunning canyon and mountain vistas.

Varietals planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Mourvedre, Grenache, Viognier, Malbec, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and others.

5. Ojai & Ventura County

Looking for a quiet, laid-back and uncrowded wine tasting experience? Visit Ventura and Ojai, in Ventura County, California.

Tucked away in a hidden valley one hour north of Los Angeles, the quaint town of Ojai lies in the scenic recessess of the Topa Topa Mountains, about 15 miles inland from the Pacific Coast. The Ojai Valley (pronounced Oh-hi) is home to great wine with over 6 tasting rooms and wineries.

Ojai is an easy getaway from Los Angeles and visitors can enjoy a walkable downtown, with shops, restaurants and numerous wine tasting rooms.

In addition to the many downtown wine tasting rooms, there are several wineries in a vineyard setting where you can sip among the vines!

The variety of minerals in the soil and the cold air that blows in from the ocean make the region particularly well suited for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also stars here.

Nearby towns of Ventura and Oxnard are  home to numerous boutique family owned wineries that serve delicious wine in an industrial atmosphere.

What our customers say…

We just wanted to thank you for such a wonderful Day. We thoroughly enjoyed the day you had planned for us, and it really made our 20th Anniversary special. Everyone was very impressed. Steve was fantastic, and a very gracious guide. We will definitely be recommending you to all our friends, and I’m sure all those who attended will also recommend you to their friends.
Just a short note to let you know that we had a wonderful day celebrating my husband’s Birthday on Saturday. The Limo choice was perfect for the four of us, cosy, but still with enough leg room for my lanky men (even my son with his foot in a moon boot!). We also wanted to pass on our appreciation to David, for being a very amicable and helpful chauffeur. He certainly made our day all the more enjoyable with his pleasant personality.
Thank you for a great day. My parents came over from NZ for my mum’s 50th birthday and this tour looked like a brilliant way to celebrate. The limo experience was fantastic, lunch – delicious, and wine – amazing, we really enjoyed the whole package.

Los Angeles Wine Tasting | Along the Expo Line

Allison Levine [November 2016]

Wine Tasting | Los Angeles | Expo Line Edition

The 14.7 mile stretch from Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica can be the bane of existence for many Angelenos. While at the right time of day, it can take as little as twenty minutes to get across the city, it typically takes closer to an hour (or more). The 10 Freeway turns us all into inchworms who slowly crawl across the city.

In May 2016, the Expo Line opened. The Expo Line is Los Angeles’ long-awaited metro line running from Downtown LA to Santa Monica. From one end to the other, the metro will take forty-seven minutes to cross the city. Of course, it could be faster at times to take a car, but if you take the metro, you can sit back and relax, send emails and watch the traffic as you pass by. Or, you can hop off and on the metro as you visit wine bars along the Expo Line. No matter whether you start from Downtown or Santa Monica, there are wine bars within walking distance from six of the eighteen stops along the Expo Line. So grab your walking shoes and your Tap Card and start drinking! Los Angeles wine tasting by train, what could be less likely and more fun than this.

7th St/Metro Center  ( 660 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles 90017)

There are four wine bars within walking distance to the first stop on the Expo Line. We start our Los Angeles wine tasting adventure here.

d vine wine bar tasting los angeles

A short four-minute walk (.2 mile) from the 7 th Street/Metro Center stop is the underground wine bar D’Vine Wine Cellar. Located below the O Hotel, the wine bar shares an entrance with the nightclub Honeycut. Head down the stairs and go left for music and cocktails and right for wine and food. The wine list is international with fifteen red wines and eleven white wines by the glass. New wine director Killian Trehoux has recently arrived from France so expect to see a possible French wine focus on the list. Wine flights are available for $16.

mignon wine tasting los angeles

A thirteen minute (.6 mile) walk from the metro is the quaint neighborhood spot, Mignon, located next to Cole’s, home of the original French dip. The warm, inviting wine bar is dominated by an eighteen-seat bar in the center of the space. There are also two two-top tables by the door. The weekly changing wine list is eclectic and interesting with a sparkling refosco from Slovenia, godelia from Spain and other tasty wines from Italy, Austria, France, Germany and New Zealand. Mignon also has sherry, port, cider and dessert wines by the glass. A menu of salads, charcuterie, cheese and other small plates is available.

Wednesday night is flight night where you can get 3 ½ glasses of wine for $15.

garcon cafe los angeles wine tasting

Located only three minutes (.2 mile) from Mignon, or eleven minutes (.5 mile) from the metro, Garcons de Café is located in the Spring Arcade building, a glass enclosed space that runs between Spring St. and Broadway that currently houses a few restaurants with more on the way. Garcons de Café is a charming French marketplace and lounge. French owners Sofian Ketfi and Thomas Choulot met in Africa and with a shared love of wine, came to Los Angeles to open their wine bar. The wine selection, which changes weekly, is exclusively French and features primarily organic, small production wines. Full bottles of wine are also available for retail purchase. With a low markup, the wines are a great value which makes it no wonder why Garcons de Café is a popular spot for sommeliers to stop for a drink. Tucked inside Vroman’s bookstore in Pasadena, the 1894 is a one-of-a-kind bar for lovers of wine and literature. Flights are a terrific option for those in a sampling mood, while those who know what they want will likely find it on the bar’s tight list of reds, whites, rosés, and more. Buvons Natural Wine Bar + Shop

Open since 2022, Long Beach’s popular wine bar has a spacious patio and cozy indoor space surrounded by bottle-lined shelves. The wine selections at Highland Park’s Holcomb are natural, organic, and biodynamic — but that doesn’t mean that this is a stuffy wine bar, though. Try any of the wine-friendly dishes like the mussel escabeche while seated indoors, on the outdoor patio, or at a table stationed on the sidewalk.

Wife and the Somm

Glassell Park’s cozy neighborhood wine bar is worth checking out for the wines and the outdoor patio. The snackable menu has cheese and charcuterie, plus easy fare like braised short ribs and pasta. It’s also an excellent place for brunch.

Coravin's Inventor On The Future Of Wine Tasting

Coravin’s upcoming tour will offer oenophiles the opportunity to sample rare wines by the glass at top restaurants, providing a unique chance to experience wines often only available by the bottle.

Coravin's lineup of wine preservation systems.

Coravin changed the wine opener game when it launched its first device in 2013. Now more than a decade later, with several wine preservation systems in its portfolio, Coravin continues to shape the wine industry by changing both how (and how long) we can enjoy wine.

Founded by Greg Lambrecht, Coravin manufactures devices that allow wine enthusiasts to pour wine without removing the cork, preserving the remaining wine for days or weeks—and sometimes even up to years. The system works by inserting a thin needle through the cork and replacing the poured wine with inert gas, preventing oxidation.

As the wine industry evolves, Lambrecht believes that technology will play an essential role in enhancing consumer experiences, especially in fine dining and hospitality.

"Since founding Coravin, my goal has always been to change the way the world experiences wine. I see a growing demand for more personalized, curated experiences," Lambrecht tells Forbes . "Our ultimate goal is to help venues optimize their inventory, reduce waste and deliver an unparalleled wine experience to every guest."

Lambrecht sees Coravin’s technology as a game-changer for both consumers and restaurants.

For customers, this means enabling them to explore an array of wines-by-the-glass without committing to a full bottle. And for the restaurant, it greatly reduces risk of spoilage.

At the moment, Lambrecht is on a world tour that will offer consumers exclusive opportunities to taste through a collection of fine and rare wines-by-the-glass at some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants.

"The Coravin World Wine Tour was inspired by our mission to transform the way people experience wine," Lambrecht tells Forbes . “It also demonstrates to consumers that they can have an excellent wine-by-the-glass program in their own homes using the same systems used at the restaurant.”

For Coravin founder Greg Lambrecht, the future of wine preservation is about more than just technology—it’s about transforming the way people experience and enjoy wine.

Coravin’s World Wine Tour, which launched in Europe and Australia earlier this year, has now reached the United States, with events scheduled for New York, Los Angeles and Boston this month. The tour features a selection of wines-by-the-glass, from well-known producers like Krug and Dom Perignon to rare Burgundy and California wines.

"When selecting participating restaurants, we focused on venues with a strong commitment to their wine-by-the-glass programs and a reputation for delivering exceptional guest experiences," Lambrecht explains. Among some of the participating U.S. restaurants include Atomix and Atoboy in New York City, Mastro’s Beverly Hills in Los Angeles and Geppetto in Boston.

Participating venues will be using Coravin’s wine openers, allowing them to expand their by-the-glass menus without compromising the freshness or quality of the wine. Some restaurants will offer up to 150 wines by the glass. Lambrecht stresses technology’s role in making this possible, explaining that Coravin’s systems "allow venues to expand their by-the-glass offerings dramatically, keeping wines fresh for weeks, months and years after the first pour."

Coravin’s founder says the wine preservation system benefits restaurants by enabling them to offer a wider variety of wines while reducing waste.

With Coravin systems now available in over 60 countries, the Massachusetts-based company is focused on expanding its global presence as well as promoting wine-by-the-glass programs worldwide.

"As technology continues to advance, I envision a more seamless integration between wine service and customer engagement," he says. “By collaborating with these networks, we aim to elevate wine education and appreciation on a global scale.”
