Tourism WA is handing out $500,000 in travel vouchers to celebrate grand reopening

wa tourism vouchers

The WA government is giving away over half a million dollars worth of vouchers to support local tourism when the border reopens.

The vouchers will be eligible for some of Western Australia’s most popular tourist experiences.

Tourism WA will provide 3,400 of the ‘Gifts From Western Australia’ – two-person vouchers, worth between $150 to $2,200 for a three-day tour of Margaret River.

Some of the attractions include skydiving at Rottnest Island, trips to the Pinnacles, and swimming with dolphins.

But for some lucky visitors, the party starts before getting to Western Australia because Tourism WA is delivering 200 toy quokkas to Qantas for the first flights from Sydney and Melbourne to promote Rottnest Island and ‘The World’s Happiest Animal’ to visitors.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said the State Government wanted to encourage visitors to “experience all we can offer” and make sure the benefits were enjoyed by local tourism operators.

Tourism Minister, Roger Cook, said that in addition to the vouchers supporting travellers, they’d also advertise some of WA’s tourism operators.

“Western Australia is a place like no other, and these vouchers will encourage the first arrivals to explore the stunning coastlines, famous food and wine, unique art and culture, and ancient Aboriginal history,” Cook said.

“The vouchers, through Tourism WA, will also support and promote various tourism operators in Perth and the surrounding regions to thousands of incoming visitors.”

Western Australia’s border re-opening allows travellers to enter the state quarantine-free for all vaccinated interstate and overseas tourists from 3 March.

Travellers will be able to enter Western Australia if they meet the international requirements to enter Australia, take a rapid antigen test (RAT) within 12 hours of arrival, and report any positive result if there is one.

“March 3 will be a step forward for Western Australia, a safe step forward, taken at the right time, in the right way, for the right reasons,” McGowan said.

“There comes a point where the border is redundant because we’ll already have the growth of cases here, having the border is no longer effective.”

Free WA Tourism Vouchers For Perth Arrivals

Wa government are welcoming perth arrivals with more than $500,000 worth of free wa tourism vouchers..

More than $500,000 worth of free tourism vouchers will be handed out at Perth Airport this week to welcome interstate and international arrivals – providing a major boost to local tourism operators as borders ease.

The McGowan Government promotion, through Tourism WA, will begin after midnight on March 3 and encourage visitors to support local tour and experience businesses during their trip to Western Australia.

“When interstate and international travel returns in full on March 3, we want to encourage visitors to experience all we can offer, while ensuring local tourism operators enjoy the benefits,” said Mr McGowan.

The campaign will provide 3,400 ‘Gifts From Western Australia’ two-person vouchers, ranging in value from $150 to $2,200 for a three-day tour of  Margaret River .

The vouchers offer tourism experiences from about 20 different operators, including skydiving at  Rottnest Island , swimming with dolphins or touring Penguin Island, as well as sunset stargazing at the Pinnacles.

The giveaway includes 1,000 vouchers for StudyPerth to target to international students.

Tourism WA is also delivering 200 toy quokkas to Qantas to be distributed on the first flights from Sydney and Melbourne, promoting Rottnest Island and ‘The World’s Happiest Animal’ to WA arrivals.

WA’s full border opening will allow for safe travel from interstate and overseas from 12.01am March 3, with vaccination and testing requirements on arrival – the softest landing off the back of WA’s world-leading vaccination rate.

“The McGowan Government is proud to present visitors with these ‘Gifts from Western Australia’ – the first of many initiatives to attract international and interstate visitors back to our State,” said Tourism Minister Roger Cook.

WA State Government offers $100 travel vouchers as part of ‘Wander out Yonder’ campaign

South West icon: The Busselton Jetty.

In its latest bid to get Western Australians exploring their own backyard, the State Government has made $100 vouchers available for local tourists.

Premier Mark McGowan announced the $1 million initiative this morning as part of the Government’s Wander Out Yonder campaign.

“We’ve seen a massive expansion in the number of people holidaying around WA — and our hotels, restaurants and bars are doing very well,” said Mr McGowan, speaking at tourist attraction Rockingham Wild Encounters.

“But we want to also share the love, and make sure that experience tourism businesses get Western Australians coming in.”

Journalism for the curious Australian across politics, business, culture and opinion.

The vouchers will be redeemable on wine tours.

Vouchers can be used to gain a $100 discount on a variety of different experiences, as long as the voucher-holder spends at least $100 themselves. The State Government is offering 10,000 vouchers to the first people to register on its website.

Participating businesses include fishing charters, Aboriginal cultural tours, winery tours, and diving experiences.

The announcement hopes to mitigate the crushing blow that coronavirus has exacted on experience providers. With a large proportion of their clientele coming from interstate, these businesses have been hit particularly hard by the border closure.

Despite the new initiative’s plans to inject $2 million into the WA tourism economy, there is a large gap to fill.

Tourism Research Australia statistics show that WA had 1.81 million inter-state visitors in the year ending March 2020, visitors with a total spend of $2.02 billion in the state. Since April, no inter-state visitors have been allowed in to WA without an exemption.

Despite the difficult times, Chad D’Souza, the general manager at Rockingham Wild Encounters, remains optimistic.

“We’ve changed and adapted to the local market, and we’re having to turn locals into visitors,” he said.

“The voucher idea is great, hopefully it helps locals experience all of the wonderful things that WA has to offer.”

Fancy a holiday wa government giving out $100 vouchers to 'wander out yonder'.

Lucy Quaggin

Midday COVID-19 update - September 17

Attention West Australians, your holiday adventure is set to get a serious price cut as part of a new state government campaign.

The WA government is offering 10,000 tourism vouchers for travellers to spend on experiences and tours in the state.

The vouchers will be on offer from next Monday, September 21, at 10am with the initiative coming just in time for school holidays.

“The ‘A million reasons to Wander out Yonder’ campaign will give Western Australians who spend at least $100 on a tour or experience, a $100 discount,” the government said in a statement.

“Western Australians [will be] able to register online on a first-in, best-dressed basis.

“The campaign will provide discounts on the huge range of tourism options available in WA - including winery tours, fishing charters, Aboriginal cultural tours, diving experiences, food tours, and many more.”

WA travel inspiration - sorted.

The discounts are the latest initiative in the state’s ‘Wander Out Yonder’ campaign, which is aimed at supporting tourism businesses in the wake of COVID-19.

So, how will it work?

“Visitors will be able to redeem a $100 voucher by spending at least $100 on a tour or experience,” the government statement said.

“This means people have the option of making a half-price saving on a $200 activity, or choosing to get a $100 discount off a higher-value or ‘bucket list’ experience.

“Participants will also be able to bundle several tours and experiences through participating visitor centres.”

For those who bag a voucher, they will be able to redeem them online, by phone or in person at participating visitor centres.

People will have to then book the experience by October 31 and undertake the adventure by the end of 2020.

Those wanting to get involved will have to head to the website on September 21 from 10am and register.

Premier Mark McGowan says it will be a great incentive for West Aussies to find out more about their state from the people who know it best.

“COVID-19 has impacted WA’s tour and experience businesses, and this program will give people more of a reason to take up some of the excellent activities our local operators in Perth and in the regions offer,” Mark McGowan said.

“With the school holidays just around the corner, now is the time to explore our backyard and support local businesses - take an Aboriginal cultural tour, get up close with our unique wildlife, or go abseiling down stunning gorges with adventure experts.”

How to cash in on each state & territory's travel voucher scheme

Shaney Hudson

Travel Journalist

30 October 2023

Time

Wondering how to get in on your state or territory’s travel voucher scheme? Here is everything you need to know.

To support the tourism industry each state has designed their own tourism incentive voucher system: some are complex, others already finished, many involve a minimum spend and all are conditional. Below is everything you need to know about each state’s travel incentive and cashback programs.

Vic | NSW |  ACT | Qld | WA | Tas | SA | NT

Victoria regional travel voucher scheme.

Status: First and Second round closed, Third launching 30th March, 2021

The third round of Victoria’s travel voucher scheme kicks off at 10am Tuesday 30th March, and involves a $200 reimbursement if you spend a minimum of $400 on tours and experiences, accommodation and entry fees or attractions in 11 eligible regional areas. One voucher is available per household, evidence must be provided of the $400 spent (and can be audited up to four years after your travel), and the $200 is then deposited into a nominated account. Another condition is that you also must stay two consecutive nights in paid accommodation- not with friends or at a holiday house. Victorians can register online for the scheme, must travel during an eligible period from 10th May to the 14th June, and the vouchers cannot be used for food, fuel or gambling. The biggest catch? The system operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, which means if you’re not quick getting online, you miss out.

NEW SOUTH WALES: Dine & Discover

Anason in Barangaroo.

Dine & Discover is aimed at helping the NSW hospitality, tourism and entertainment industries. (Image: Anason Barrangaroo/Destination NSW)

Status: Open

Rolled out across Local Government areas, with the last allocation on March 31st, the NSW Government is offering two $25 dine vouchers for using in restaurants, cafes, bars, wineries, pubs or clubs, and two $25 discover vouchers for entertainment and recreation including live music, museums and art galleries through businesses that have registered for Dine & Discover . Valid until June 30th, they’re available for NSW Residents through the Service NSW app online using a QR code, or can be printed out at Service NSW centres by staff.

The catch? They can only be used once with no change given if you spend less than the $25 amount, and you cannot get takeaway, online food orders, alcohol, tobacco or gambling.

The government has also announced a new package available to NSW residents aimed at boosting tourism in Sydney, by offering up to 200,000 vouchers worth $100 each for accommodation in the CBD, starting in June. Details have not been finalised, but is part of a wider tourism support package.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY: Choose CBR

Hot Air Ballooning over Parliament House, Canberra

The ACT has offered the Choose CBR scheme. (Image: Hot Air Ballooning over Parliament House/Canberra Tourist Commission)

Status: First Round completed, Second Pending

Launched in December 2020, the first “trial” round of the Australian Capital Territory’s Choose CBR scheme offered $40 worth of vouchers per day for 13 days at registered Canberra businesses – and it was open to anyone visiting Canberra from anywhere in Australia. However, the system was complex: each discount voucher involved a minimum spend. For example, to get a discount of $10 you had to spend $40 overall. To be eligible, businesses also had to jump through hoops: they had to have a physical shopfront, had staff on jobkeeper, be in retail, tourism, accommodation, arts, recreation, personal services or the hospitality sector, and earn less than $10 million turnover per year. The system had mixed results; only $310,000 of the allocated $500,000 was used.

A second main round of vouchers will be available soon, with $2 million earmarked in the ACT 2020-2021 budget, and leaders have highlighted there might be changes so more businesses are eligible. To stay updated, register online at: choosecbr.act.gov.au

QUEENSLAND: Cairns Holiday Dollars

Great Barrier Reef snorkelling

Cairns Holiday Dollars was designed to get tourists to visit the Great Barrier Reef. (Image: Snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef)

Status: Closed

Designed to entice Queenslanders to Cairns and The Great Barrier Reef, the government’s Cairns Holiday Dollars scheme issued 15,000 travel vouchers offering a 50 per cent discount on eligible tourism attractions, up to a value of $200. This included trips out to the reef and 4WD adventures, day spas and attractions, which can be used from March 15th to June 25th. The bad news? Registration opened on March 8th and closed on March 11th for Queenslanders over the age of 18, and was issued via a random lottery. While the premier hasn’t ruled out support for other areas impacted by Covid-19, there are no formal plans in place for more vouchers.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA: Wander Out Yonder & Stay Play and Save

The Adnate Perth – Art Series mural

WA have offered the Wander Out Yonder & Stay Play and Save schemes. (Image: Mural at The Adnate Perth – Art Series/Damien Smith)

Announced in September 2020, the Wander Out Yonder campaign included 10,000 vouchers aimed at promoting experiences across Western Australia. While all the vouchers have been snapped up, they offered a $100 discount for every $200 spent, with tours taking place before the end of December 2020.

Recognising urban hotels have done it tough, the government also ran a Stay, Play and Save campaign in early 2021, offering a $200 discount on a two-night consecutive hotel stay in Perth with a minimum spend of $400. Available mid-week, it was valid until the end of April, but bookings had to be finalised by February 19th.

Both schemes have now closed, but locals are encouraged to sign up to the campaign mailing list to be notified if another scheme runs.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA: Great State Experience Voucher

Escape Goat Adventures

South Australia’s third round of vouchers will target hosted tours and experiences in the state.

Status: Third Round Pending

South Australia is onto its third round of tourism incentives. Launched in October, the first round offered $100 vouchers for hotels in urban areas and $50 for regional areas and was valid from October to December. The second, launched in January 2021 included a separate allocation for interstate travellers alongside locals.

While final details have not been released, South Australia’s third round of vouchers will target hosted tours and experiences in the state. The Great State Experiences voucher will provide $50, $100 and $200 vouchers for registered businesses during the quieter winter period and July school holidays. It is aimed at South Australians, but they have indicated a small allocation will be available to interstate travellers. Set to launch after the peak Easter season, get ready to get in fast as it’s first in, best dressed: the first allocation sold out in 90 minutes, the second in 40 minutes.

TASMANIA: Make Yourself at Home

Hobart city

Tasmania’s Make Yourself at Home scheme has offered accommodation and experience vouchers. (Image: Hobart)

Tasmania has offered two travel voucher schemes under the Make Yourself at Home moniker, but both have now finished. The first round kicked off in September, allowing couples, singles and families to register for a combination of accommodation and experience vouchers valued from $150 per adult to $550 per family, eligible until December 2020. Voucher holders claimed the money back after showing receipts.

The scheme was popular, with both the first and second rounds selling out within an hour. However, with a state election now called for May in the apple isle, there might be more travel schemes announced — or at least the promise of them.

NORTHERN TERRITORY: Territory Tourism Voucher

Litchfield National Park

The NT’s Territory Tourism Voucher has offered a dollar-for-dollar incentive up to $200.  (Image: Litchfield National Park/Sarah Mackie)

Status: Round Three Active

The Northern Territory has offered three rounds of travel incentives worth over $16 million since July 2020, valid for any Territorian over the age of 18. The voucher system works on a dollar-for-dollar incentive up to $200. So if you book a $400 experience, you’ll receive a maximum of $200 off.

Participants must register online, with vouchers issued on a first-come, first serve basis. Vouchers must be booked and paid through visitor centres, they must be spent in one transaction, and must be booked within 14 days of the voucher being issued on either tours, attractions, accommodation or car hire. Travel must be completed by 30th April.

Round three also has a bonus round, where if you are booking a product through one of the four visitor information centres, and the experience or product is more than 400 kilometres away from your home, you can be reimbursed an amount ranging from $1 to $200. This is only reimbursed if you show evidence and claim it within seven days of travel. You can check your eligibility here.

WATCH OUT FOR:

The Federal government’s half price flight scheme , when prices and discounts are revealed online April 1st, 2021.
