The old cliché dictates that a picture is worth a thousand words, and certainly photos are one of the best souvenirs you can bring home when you travel. But, let’s be honest: how often do you really scroll back through your phone reel or revisit those online albums? A photo book is a much more tangible, attractive way to keep those memories safe and accessible forever.

There are many photo book makers out there, all with slightly different offerings. Some specialize in simple, budget-friendly books that you can make for every trip while others excel at luxurious coffee table art books meant to commemorate once-in-a-lifetime adventures . We’ve researched the best options to help you choose the right photo book maker for your next vacation — and beyond.

Best Overall

Artifact uprising.

The gorgeous, high-quality products come in a range of styles and materials to suit all tastes and budgets.

You won’t find themed layouts or same-day production here.

Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly softcover photo book to add to your travel collection or a premium layflat coffee table book to commemorate your destination wedding, Artifact Uprising has you covered. The company offers a full range of photo book sizes, shapes, and layouts including some more unusual options (board books for babies, for example, or Insta-friendly books designed especially for square images). Each book promises exceptional print quality and durable construction.

You can customize every aspect of your photo book, although options vary depending on the product you choose. Examples include cover color and material (with possibilities including softcover, hardcover, linen, and leather), foil stamping, paper finish, the layout of your photos and text, and the page count. Most templates include 20 pages with an additional fee for each page thereafter. You won’t find colorful themes here; all products print on white paper for a clean, uncluttered look that puts your images front and center.

For the most professional result possible, consider paying extra to collaborate with one of the company’s in-house design specialists. Production times vary from three to eight days depending on the complexity of your project. There are also four shipping options that range from standard to rush.

Best Budget

Their full range of customizable templates and colored backgrounds makes it easy to get the look you want.

Expect additional fees for any project over 20 pages, upgraded paper, and finish choices.

Although Snapfish also offers costlier products, their classic photo books are some of the most affordable out there. If you opt for a 7x5 or 6x8 softcover or hardcover book and stick to the included 20-page limit, you can easily spend under $20. Affordable upgrades include premium gloss pages and/or a matte cover; but bear in mind that extra pages can quickly add up. Making your photo book is simple. Choose the size and orientation, then design your own from scratch or use one of many premade templates.

Travel-themed templates include roadtrip, destination stamps, and tropical beach escape . After personalizing them with your photos and text. you can change the background color and add embellishments to each page. Optional layflat binding is worth the extra cost for seamless double-page spreads. If you find yourself with extra room in the budget, you can upgrade to a linen or leather cover. Production times vary, with the quickest delivery taking around three days with rushed shipping, but there are four total shipping options to cater to every budget.

Easiest to Use

Shutterfly’s in-house designers can create a photo book for you in 24 hours; all you have to do is provide your images.

If you’re in a hurry, bear in mind that rush production and delivery is only available for certain products.

Most photo book makers require you to upload your images and then manually build each page or use an auto-uploader to add the pictures to a premade template. The first option is time consuming and the second often results in images being cropped or grouped in strange ways. Shutterfly offers a third option: upload your photos, then let an in-house designer create your book for you in 24 hours. Upon reviewing their design, you can order as-is or tweak it to suit your specifications.

Best of all? This design service is offered free of charge. You can even use the Shutterfly app to upload photos directly from your phone. If you don’t want to use this service, no problem. You can still create photo books manually or use the faster autofill option. There are plenty of templates to choose from, with six square and rectangular size options and four cover types (softcover, matte or glossy hardcover, or premium leather). Production and delivery can take between one and 10 business days depending on the product and shipping option selected.

Best Themed Templates

Mixbook photo book.

With more than 700 themed templates to choose from, there’s an option for every kind of vacation.

Not all templates offer the same number of free pages, so be sure to check before deciding.

Mixbook photo books are divided into three main types: hardcover, softcover, and layflat for those seamless double-page spreads. Whichever you go for, there are more than 700 templates to choose from. These can be browsed by category with categories like year in review, seasonal, and, of course, templates for every major life event from weddings to baby’s first year. Travel-specific templates include options for photos only, or photos and text in a dizzying array of different layouts.

Some are customizable to any trip while others are specific to certain adventures with themed graphics, text, and embellishments. There’s one for Disney trips , another for Royal Caribbean cruises, and another for national park adventures. You can also start with a completely blank canvas. Books can be landscape, portrait, or square and there are different paper and cover finishes to choose from. Production typically takes one to two business days with four shipping options available.

Best for Complex Designs

Canva photo books.

More than just a photo book maker, Canva lets you edit your photos and share your design with a team of collaborators.

Some templates and features are only available with a paid Canva Pro account.

For full creative freedom, choose Canva. Decide on a landscape or square book, then choose a hard or softcover. Next, browse thousands of templates (including a category dedicated to travel) and upload images from your phone, tablet, or desktop. All templates are fully customizable, which means you can change the font, the colors, and add icons and graphics. You can also edit your photos as you go with options to crop and rotate, adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation, and enhance with different filters and frames.

All layouts can be adjusted to suit the number of photos you want on each page. If you upgrade to Canva Pro, you can remove backgrounds with a single click (kind of like cutting and pasting elements of real photos for a traditional scrapbook.) Canva autosaves as you go and creates an editing link that you can share to ask for input from friends and family. Recycled packaging and free standard shipping round out this company’s benefits.

Best for Simple Designs

Chatbooks is affordable and easy to use with the option to subscribe for repeat orders.

Customization options are limited.

If your photo book goals are a little less ambitious, opt for stackable, collectible designs from Chatbooks. The company’s classic photo books offer high quality printing at a price tag that’s reasonable enough to justify regular creations (if you like, you can even sign up for a monthly subscription.) How do they do this? By keeping things simple. You won’t find fancy templates or colored backgrounds, or an endless array of customizable graphics and fonts.

Instead, upload photos from your desktop or phone. Then, decide how many you want to appear on each page. If the answer is just one, choose whether you want it to cover the full page or have a white border around it. You can leave the layout text-free or add a simple location tag and/or caption. Other design choices include the book’s size, whether it has a hard or softcover, the color of the spine, and the cover. Books are made in the U.S. and include a generous 30 pages, with the option to buy more up to a total of 366. Standard shipping is free.

Best for Fast Printing

Walmart photo.

Walmart lets you design, order, and collect your photo book in-store, all on the same day.

Most photo books must be no more than 40 pages to be eligible for same-day pickup.

Walmart offers a solution for anyone who’s designing a photo book on a deadline, with more than 80 layouts that can be created online and then picked up in-store on the same day. You can choose from a variety of square and rectangular sizes in several different styles including softcover, matte and glossy hardcover; layflat; and premium layflat (with extra thick pages and a matte finish). Alternatively, upgrade to a linen or leather cover, or opt for a die-cut style that showcases your favorite image through a window.

There are many themed templates to choose from, though most of them are fairly basic (don’t expect Canva-level creative flair.) Most templates include 20 pages with the option to buy more, but be aware that there’s usually a 40-page limit if you want to pick your book up the same day. If you have a little more time to work with and want extra pages, you can also opt for home delivery with free shipping on orders over $35.

Best Coffee Table Books

Once upon photo books.

Once Upon focuses on simple layouts that can be shared with and edited by multiple people.

Designs may be a little too basic for fans of complex templates and embellishments.

Once Upon offers three options for simple yet visually striking coffee table books. These include large and medium hardcover photo books with a sturdy build and a title of your choice printed on the spine, and medium softcover books for a flexible, lightweight feel that’s reminiscent of a luxury magazine. Choose whether you want silk matte or glossy pages, then create your book by uploading pictures directly from your phone, tablet, or desktop.

Layouts are simple, with no themed templates, background colors, or fancy fonts. Instead, choose the number of photos you want featured on each page and let Once Upon create a collage automatically on the white background. You can edit the order in which they appear and add simple captions or separate text pages. Want to collaborate with your co-travelers? Share the editing link or QR code to get their input. The first 20 pages are included with a maximum of 200 available. Expect delivery in six to 12 business days.

Best Board Books

Pinhole press.

From their wipeable pages to their easy-turn binding, board books from Pinhole Press are designed especially with little kids in mind.

The number of included pages varies from one template to the next, and not all templates allow you to add more.

If you love the idea of making a photo book for the baby or toddler in your life but want it to last more than a few hours, check out Pinhole Press. Their board books are made especially for little people with rigid, high-gloss pages that can be wiped clean of errant crumbs or juice drops. A spiral binding makes for seamless page turning, while the 5.25 x 5.25 inch size is ideal for tiny hands. We love the clear, bright photos and just-right text size.

There are lots of different templates to choose from, including a story board book that’s perfect for commemorating baby’s first vacation. The company also offers educational templates (think ABCs, colors, emotions, count with me, and my first cookbook options). Some have space for a fixed number of pages and photos while others let you pay to add more. For slightly older kids, consider Pinhole’s Itty Bitty books (miniature sized for long journeys) or their All About books with space for 10 photos alongside fill-in prompts your child can write on.

Best Mini Books

Nations photo lab albums.

Buzz Books are cost-effective and require minimal storage space, making them the perfect collector’s item.

Beyond choosing which photo appears on each page, customization options are very limited.

Nations Photo Lab offers a full range of photo book products including templates for everything from travel to weddings and boudoir photography. Depending which one you choose, you can customize the binding, cover material, page thickness, and more. We particularly like their Buzz Books for those in search of something simple. At 6 x 6 inches, they’re both small enough and affordable enough to justify purchasing one for every trip.

There are more than 120 pre-designed, soft-touch covers to choose from (you can also create your own) but the inside of each Buzz Book is the same: 40 pages, with one photo per page. The photos are printed on professional-quality Mohawk Matte paper against a white background for full visual effect. There are multiple shipping options available, including USPS First Class which delivers in two to six business days.

Best Sustainable

Paper culture.

Paper Culture photo books are made with recycled paper and every order placed equals a tree planted.

Shipping rates are relatively expensive.

Paper Culture is a certified Green Business that offsets its carbon footprint and has been recognized by the EPA as a Top 10 climate leader. All photo books use 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper and with a tree planted for every order, you can feel good about your purchase on multiple levels. Books are 8 x 8 or 8 x 10 inches and you can choose a hardcover, a layflat hardcover, or a layflat with a foil-embossed Kraft cover and personalized dust jacket.

There are multiple templates divided into categories such as travel, holiday, or wedding. Whichever you go for, you’ll be able to create an end result that’s entirely unique since all elements are customizable. Choose the layout and order of your photos, add text in different fonts and colors, and change the background color of each page. Templates include 20 pages with the possibility of purchasing more. Shipping options range from standard to next-day express.

Best Video Books

Heirloom lets you add up to one hour of video to a physical book that plays original audio with crystal clear quality.

Video books can show vertical or horizontal footage, but not both.

For a slightly different approach to preserving your travel memories, consider Heirloom which adds your videos to a physical book so that they can be looked at and enjoyed over and over again. Each book includes a five-inch HD screen. You can choose for yours to be oriented horizontally or vertically (more appropriate for those that typically shoot footage on their phone.) There are three options: up to 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or one hour.

Here’s how it works: purchase your video book online, then receive an email with instructions on how to add video using the online builder. Your book will then be created and mailed to you. You don’t have to limit yourself to video. The books can also display photos as a slideshow and even mix photos and videos together. Add a personal message. Then, choose from 16 premade covers or pay extra for a custom cover printed with your own design. All video books include a charger and expedited delivery is a possibility.

If you're looking for creative ways to display and share your travel photos, you aren't limited to photo books. There are a few other options when it comes to memorializing your trip.

Aura Carver Digital Picture Frame : A digital picture frame is a great way to display a lot of pictures without spending a fortune on paper. Simply upload photos from your phone or computer directly to the frame and watch your snapshots cycle through on the high-resolution screen.

Fujifilm Instax Mini Link 2 Smartphone Printer : Print individual photos on the go with this smartphone printer that's travel-sized and easy to use. After connecting to your phone via Bluetooth, it only takes about 15 seconds to print out a 2-by-3-inch photo.

Tips for Choosing a Photo Book Website

Consider turnaround time.

If you need your photo book in a hurry, make sure to take production and delivery times into consideration when choosing which company to use. A handful — usually more budget-friendly ones — offer same-day production and the option to collect in-store, which is ideal for last-minute gifts . Others take several days to produce your book, but then offer expedited or rushed shipping to cut delivery time down to a minimum. Others can take two or more weeks to deliver. Check product descriptions carefully, since turnaround times can differ within the same company depending on the size and complexity of the photo book you choose.

Look closely at the templates offered

Think about your desired photo book aesthetic and then look for a company with templates to match. These can vary from the simplistic (your photos and perhaps some text on a plain white background) to the complex (different background colors and designs, optional filters and frames, the ability to create collages and add text bubbles or other graphics.) Some companies offer templates that have been pre-designed to suit a specific theme, whether that’s travel in general or a Disney trip, tropical cruise, or camping adventure .

Prioritize ease of use

If you have a background in design or count scrapbooking among your hobbies, you may relish in the challenge of building a photo book from scratch. But if you’re pressed for time or simply don’t want to spend hours choosing which photos go where and how to make them look their best, look for a photo book maker that does the hard work for you. This can either be through an autofill service that arranges your photos on the page (usually, you can tweak this afterwards) or through a collaboration over email or live chat with one of the company’s in-house designers. The latter service often costs extra but sometimes, as with Shutterfly, is offered free of charge.

Image quality is key

The most important thing when making a photo book is ensuring that the photos look as good as possible. This means choosing a professional, well-reviewed company that uses quality paper and printing methods. It also means submitting photos that are good quality . Most photo book companies will have guidelines for optimum image size and resolution, and others will come up with a warning message if the image you’ve selected is not of a sufficiently high quality. You can usually choose to use it anyway, but be prepared for it to look a little grainy or pixelated. Top tip: use your lowest resolution photos for the smallest spaces on collage pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, most photo book makers can be used on your tablet or smartphone, either via a mobile-friendly website or with a special app. Just bear in mind that complicated layouts or photo books with lots of collage pages are often much easier to view and organize on a larger screen.

The cost of a photo book varies hugely from under $20 to over $200. The price depends on which company you use but also on the size of the photo book, how many pages you want, and the materials you choose. Most templates include some pages in their starting price (20-25 on average), with a per-page fee for longer books. Softcover books are typically the cheapest, followed by hardcover and then linen and leather options. Traditional binding is cheaper than layflat, but layflat looks much better if you’re planning on having photos extend across a double page spread. Other factors that could increase cost include custom covers, premium paper finishes, design assistance, and expedited shipping.

You want to find a company that prints photos that look as close as possible to the original, whether it was taken on a professional DSLR camera or downloaded from Facebook or Instagram. Images shouldn’t look grainy, blurry, or over- or undersaturated. Choose a photo book maker that uses professional printers and high-quality paper, and be sure to check customer reviews for the best insight into the kind of results you can expect. Don’t forget, though, pictures can only ever look as good as they were to begin with. So choose the crispest, best resolution images you have and use a light hand when editing them for a natural look.

Frequently asked questions, what is a photo book.

A photo book is a visually oriented book in which photography is the primary form of content. While most types of books can contain photographs, a true photo book significantly emphasizes images over text, providing a more visually engaging experience.

Photo books typically feature the work of a photographer but may also include professional touches of book editors and graphic designers to construct a cohesive narrative and a polished finished product. In the self-publishing world, photo books are one of the most popular types that can be created online and printed into physical hard copies.

For many bookmakers, the purpose of a photo book is to display and preserve photos through a creative and tangible outlet. They can be used as coffee table books with overarching themes or storylines, or provide the foundation for beautiful cookbooks, children’s books, travel books, how-to guides, and creative portfolios. What is the difference between a photo book and a layflat book?

A layflat book is a type of photo book with key differentiators that make it unique. The main distinctions between a photo book and a layflat book are the type of paper and the binding design used in the book's construction.

As the name suggests, layflat books can open completely flat without damaging the binding. Compared to perfect-bound books, where individual pages are glued into the binding, layflat books use one continuous sheet of paper for each page spread that's folded down the center and glued to the next spread. This makes layflat photo books preferred for showcasing expansive photos in full-page spreads where the image runs across two facing pages. Non-layflat photo books, on the other hand, feel more like traditional books in that they use a perfect binding technique glued at the spine and cannot lay completely flat when open.

Layflat books generally have between 20 and 110 pages, whereas traditional photo books provide greater flexibility to have more, or fewer pages as needed. The paper thickness is also unique in layflat books, providing a different feel. When using Blurb for self-publishing, layflat paper options come in Premium Lustre, Mohawk Superfine Eggshell, or Mohawk ProPhoto Pearl paper. And because the pages are glued back-to-back with a thin insert, layflat books have ultra-thick pages.

How do I make a photo book?

There are multiple ways you can go about creating your own photo book. For a professional-quality finished product, you can use an online self-publishing service like Blurb, which allows you to custom design your photo book's layout based on various book sizes, types, and materials. It's easy to arrange your photography using Blurb's print-ready, customizable photo book templates , or you can design each page layout yourself.

Whether you use a self-publishing platform like Blurb or an alternative method, the fundamental process of making your photo book involves similar steps. First, you need to select the photos you'd like to include and organize your work in an arrangement that flows with your book's overarching narrative. Next, you'll want to choose a theme or layout that aligns with the nature of your photos and the overall book and begin constructing each page or collection of pages within each section. You may also want to include text, captions, and other design elements to improve your photo book's overall look and feel.

Other fine details can go into the process, such as editing photos, choosing a paper type, and selecting a book format. But with the help of platforms like Blurb, these options are seamlessly baked into the book-creating process, making it easy to bring your photo book to life .

How much does a photo book cost?

The cost of making a photo book depends on several variables, including the book's size, number of pages, type of cover, paper choice, and the volume of books being printed. Professional-quality photo books created using a self-publishing service like Blurb can start as low as $12 for a mini square 5×5-inch (13×13 cm) softcover book with twenty pages and can go up to $70 for a large landscape 13×11-inch (33×28 cm) book with an ImageWrap hardcover.

The choice of paper, such as a Premium Lustre or Mohawk Superfine, can increase the cost of printing a photo book. Layflat photo books can also be more costly to make. For instance, a 20-page layflat hardcover photo book can range between $60 for a small square photo book to upwards of $170 for a large landscape format with Mohawk Prophoto Pearl paper. These price estimates are all based on the cost of printing just one book. If you choose to print over 20 books, Blurb provides a 20% discount as well as additional volume printing options for large orders.

Given the wide range of options for making your own photo book, we recommend using our pricing calculator . By inputting your book's anticipated number of pages and how many copies to print, you can see the cost to make a photo book based on the different sizes, paper choices, and cover options.

What size should my photo book be?

The ideal size of your photo book will depend on the nature of your photography and the desired outcome of your project. For example, does your photo book need to be compact and portable, such as a portfolio handout? Or does it need to lay flat to capture full-spread landscape photos, like a coffee table book?

Your book's underlying purpose and photography style will help determine the best size for your photo book. Blurb offers six photo book trim sizes, ranging from mini square (5×5 inch) to large landscape (13×11 inch). The standard landscape photo book size (8x10 inch) is a great place to start for most projects. Learn more about the different size options and corresponding prices based on size, material, and number of pages.

How long will it take for my photo book to arrive?

With Blurb, once you've completed your photo book and placed the order, it takes about 7 to 11 business days for your book to arrive. The book production process requires approximately 4 to 5 business days to complete. The remaining delivery time depends on your selected shipping method and destination. At checkout, we'll provide you with estimated delivery dates.

Should I order a proof copy?

Yes! If you're considering self-publishing your own photo book with Blurb, ordering a proof copy is highly recommended . A proof copy is a single printed copy of your book that allows you to see how it looks when printed, bound, and trimmed by Blurb. It's often viewed as an essential step in the printing process to effectively catch any errors, typos, or design issues that may have been missed on screen.

A proof copy also provides an excellent opportunity to check the color and brightness of your images, as well as ensure that your content is properly placed within the trim guides. Blurb does not review or edit your content, so it's crucial to thoroughly review your proof copy before proceeding with a larger order or making your book available for sale.

Photo Albums For Every Occasion

Memories come back to life when you can hold them in your hands, show off the best moments to your friends, and tell the stories to your family.  That’s why, even in the age of computers and smartphones, photo books are more popular than ever.

No matter whether you want to make photo books online or use the Journi Print photo book app, we’re here for you.

The possibilities are literally endless.  You could: make a photo scrapbook of the kids growing up or photo books for all the trips and vacations you’ve captured on your phone or a photo album of your time at university or a photobook of your favorite memories of the past year or create a photo album of your wedding day or make a scrapbook album of your baby’s first year…

People use Journi to make photo albums for all sorts of reasons, both for themselves and as presents for others.  Whomever you’re gifting a photobook to, they’re going to be in for a treat.

Create Photo Books In Minutes

Looking for a quick and easy way to print your memories?  Then you need the Journi Print photo book app. Create photo books like a pro with nothing more than your phone.

Choose the photos you want to use in your photo album, either directly from your phone, or from those saved on Google Photos.  Then the Journi photo book app works its magic and lays out as many as 1,200 photos for you within seconds!

You can then immediately scroll through the draft design, complete with auto-generated maps of your adventures, and start editing and personalizing it.  Add notes for your memories, shuffle the order of the photos, and design the front cover. And hey presto! Before you know it, you’ve made an amazing, unique photo album in minutes!

Your Story As A Timeline

Journi automatically lays out the photos of your photobook chronologically for you, creating a timeline of beautiful collages and full page images that tells your story the way it was supposed to be told …but without all the hard work of finding the best way of arranging the pictures!  You can then add notes to your photo album, highlighting your best memories. Making a photo scrapbook really is that easy!

open-photo-book-closed

Large Photo Books

The bigger, the better, right? Journi's 30x30cm photo books are perfect for celebrating the most special moments in life - whether you're making a large wedding photo album, creating a square photo book to capture your round-the-world trip, or designing a big family photo album. A large, 30x30cm photo book is as special as the memories inside of it. This premium photo album is the logical choice for showcasing your once-in-a-lifetime moments.

Can't Decide Between Glossy and Matte?

Matte is the standard finish for our photo books. Nevertheless, you might be looking for a glossy finish to give your memories a premium touch. While many enjoy the natural look of matte photos, a glossy finish will make the colors in your photos pop. The shiny appearance and the greater depth in dark images brings your glossy photos to life.

Ultimately, choosing between a matte and a glossy photo book is a matter of personal preference, and we're more than happy to give you the choice of how to treasure your memories forever.

Quality Photo Albums, Made With Love

Journi photobooks are made using the latest printing technology, ensuring that you can enjoy beautiful photos that cover the pages from edge to edge without having to worry about whether anything is going to be cropped out …because we don’t crop your photos!

Once the photos have been printed on thick, premium quality paper, each book is inspected by hand before it is shipped to you.

It Couldn’t Be Easier

Let Journi do all the hard work for you.  Not only does Journi’s algorithm layout the photos, but it also automatically adds the dates for your timeline and automatically creates maps of where you’ve been.  A Journi photo book can tell your story for you!

Plus, the app is capable of working with your phone’s speech-to-text function, making it even quicker and simpler to add notes of your memories throughout your photobook!

The Top 6 Destinations in Baja California, Mexico

travel fotoboek

When a place has earned its spot on our Top Places to Travel in 2019, you know it's good. The Baja California Peninsula has clear blue waters, fresh design, and seriously good guacamole.

Punta Lobos beach in Todos Santos.

Todos Santos

What’s to Love: A hippie, happy eco-chic town 45-minutes north of Cabo San Lucas on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. This hidden treasure has long been a haven for travelers, surfers, artists, and bohemians seeking tranquility away from the hustle of Cabo. The infamous surf break of Playa Cerritos beach is a great place to ride the cerulean-blue waves — rent a board or arrange a lesson from Mario Surf School . Pescadero or Punta Lobos are also great beaches to stroll: Pitch an umbrella in the sand and allow the vitamin D to soak right in. For dry land explorers, walk the cobblestone streets of tiny artisanal boutiques, or hit the trail above Punta Lobos for breathtaking views of the old fishing port, home to a sea lion colony. Don’t miss Restaurant Bar Bahia — a super-casual corner spot in Todos Santos with awesome fish tacos and ceviche (cash only).

Where to Stay: Hotel San Cristóbal , a beachside desert oasis by Texas hotelier Liz Lambert of Bunkhouse Group , and the perfect place to relax by the pool, sip mezcal in colorful-chic kimonos, and simply sleep in. On a budget? La Bohemia Baja is an eight-room boutique bed-and-breakfast hideaway among a lush tropical garden and steps away from the center of town.

Baja Beans, Pescadero.

What’s to Love : A few miles south of sister town Todos Santos, Pescadero is an abundant and shockingly green oasis in the dry Baja desert, its roads filled with palm groves leading to the endless golden beach. Just off the main road is Baja Beans , serving the best coffee and community in town. It’s your chance to hang with locals, check your email (if you must...), and enjoy live music on Sundays, when they host a farmers market with produce and arts and crafts. (Pro tip: Try the chocolate cake.) Enjoy a few meals at Hierbabuena in the middle of a garden surrounded by farmland: It’s the most popular restaurant in the Todos/Pescadero area for good reason.

Where to Stay : Rancho Pescadero is an adults-only hotel with a relaxed vibe and the very best Mexican hospitality. Expect fresh coffee and pastries brought to your door in the morning. (Though the huevos rancheros are not to be missed.) Hotel Punta Pescadero Paradise is the top spot along the East Cape for fishing, diving, and the adventurous getaway.

Cabo San Lucas

What’s to Love : The southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, commonly known as Los Cabos, refers to the adjacent towns of Cabo San Lucas on the Pacific Ocean and San José del Cabo on the Sea of Cortez (also where the international airport is). While the infamous Zona Hotelera (hotel zone) used to dominate the college spring break scene, Cabo San Lucas has officially graduated, with new high-design boutique hotels, romantic seaside villas, Hakkasan restaurants Casa Calavera  and  Herringbone Los Cabos , and nary a tequila shot in sight. Good to know: Cabo is best for pool loungers, as swimming is prohibited on most beaches due to the strong ocean undertow.

Where to Stay : Las Ventanas al Paraíso , a fabulous Rosewood Resort halfway between San Jose and Cabo, specializes in service and luxury. (Case in point: They have an entire department devoted to creating romantic experiences for guests.)

View from the Presidential Suite pool at Montage Los Cabos.

San José del Cabo

What’s to Love : Less of a party town than Cabo San Lucas, with a more laid-back, small-town lifestyle. It’s best for artists, foodies, and travelers looking for a little more culture and authenticity than the all-inclusive resorts that Cabo is known for. Take a stroll to the quaint center square, where colorful shops, galleries, and restaurants populate the streets.

Where to Stay : Montage Los Cabos , a relaxation haven located in a quiet cove on one of the only swimmable beaches in the area (read the full Fathom review here ). Los Cabos newcomer Solaz Los Cabos is the ultimate tranquil winter escape on the tip of the peninsula. One&Only Palmilla , a 1950s beachfront Spanish-style landmark, offers a private yacht for sunset cruises and guided fishing adventures. Drift San Jose is a little urban oasis in the center of San Jose and perfect for independent travelers seeking peace, quiet, and comfort in a tranquil and private setting. Once you step inside the  Viceroy Los Cabos , you’ll be lost in an otherworldly escape. The architectural masterpiece by prominent Mexican architect Miguel Ángel Aragonés incorporates water, sand, and sea breeze into its very foundations. A dining experience at  Nido  is not to be missed — think inspired ceviche, creative cocktails, and live music inside the coolest hive ever. (Read the full Fathom review  here .)

Whale shark in La Paz.

What’s to Love : A chance to swim with whale sharks , as Fun Baja's crew are experts in spotting the wild creatures. Take a day trip to the natural sanctuary of Isla Espíritu Santo and snorkel or scuba dive with the sea lions of Los Islotes. Those interested in whale watching should travel to Baja between December and April.

Where to Stay : CostaBaja Resort & Spa is La Paz’s original five-star resort surrounded by a private marina — a complete oasis where the desert meets the sea. Sleep under the stars at the luxury glamping site Camp Cecil in beautiful and ultra-chic safari tents overlooking the Sea of Cortez on Espíritu Santo Island. Vena Cava winery.

Valle de Guadalupe

What’s to Love: Drive two hours south of San Diego, and you'll discover one of the world's most interesting and up-and-coming wine regions. Yes, in Mexico. Valle de Guadalupe is special and limited, as most wineries are small in production and have very little distribution outside the country. Tres Mujeres is an all-female collective of wine producers where you’re likely to hear their stories and meet one of the owners as she pours your flight. If you only do one thing, drink three kinds of Mexican bubbly and eat everything at Conchas de Piedra , where everything is prepared on a wood fire in the outdoor kitchen.

Where to Stay : There are no chain hotels in the Valle de Guadalupe. (Yet.) Of the luxurious, modern boutique hotels, Encuentro Guadaloupe has stunning views and individual, modern cabins hanging off the cliffs. La Villa del Valle is a pretty Tuscan-style country retreat by the Vena Cava group. Finca la Divina is a four-bedroom inn run by beloved local chef Javier Plascencia near his restaurant, Finca Altozano . Villas El Cielo is a lovely and modern option on the El Cielo winery. Hacienda Guadalupe is a nice mid-range option.

Hollywood, ca travel, photos information and news.

Hollywood has something that is more powerful in the minds of those who come to see the words written on hill that say "HOLLYWOOD". It has star power...everybody either wants to be a star or see one when they come to Hollywood.

What's so fascinating about fascinating Hollywood is the name itself has no intrinsic meaning other than what it has become. The founders of Hollywood, Harvey Henderson Wilcox and his wife, Daeida, established it as a residential development. Did Daeida select the name after she met a lady on a train whose summer home was called Hollywood, as some suggest? "The Father of Hollywood" by Gaelyn Whitley Keith attributes the founding to H J Whitley in 1886. Whitley Heights is on the National Registry and the Whitley, himself, is buried in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Hollywood isn't a city at all, actually. At an election on November 14, 1903, the residents of Hollywood voted to incorporate as an independent city but did an about turn in 1910 when they sought a reliable water supply and felt that would only be assured by being annexed into Los Angeles. The region has really run with the name and trademarked it, emblazoned it on the hills and spread the word about this place throughout the world.

When you visit, you'll see thousands of tourists from around the globe coming to Hollywood, putting their footprints and handprints into the castings of the famous celebrities next to Mann's Chinese Theatre, buying souvenir things with HOLLYWOOD on them, and taking tours in buses that provide narratives of the famous people. The Grayline Tours actually stop in front of celebrity houses and wait for a sign of someone to come out or wave. It's pretty crazy, but that's how it goes in a star-crazed place.

When you visit Hollywood, there's a lot to see and do.

Capitol Records, 1750 N. Vine, at the historic intersection of Hollywood and Vine. Landmark building is one of Hollywood's icons and built like a stack of records.

Universal Studios Hollywood, (818) 508-9600. Located off the Hollywood Fwy. at the Universal Center Drive and Lankershim exits. Includes popular attractions based on movies, back lot tours of actual film studios, and City Walk, a free admission entertainment, shopping and dining attraction. Open daily, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Operating hours vary.

Walk of Fame - honors more than 2,000 stars of motion pictures, television, recording, radio and theatre. The Walk is located on Hollywood Blvd. between La Brea and Gower and on Vine Street between Yucca and Sunset Blvd. Approximately 20 new stars are added each year.

Where to stay? Renaissance Hotel, which is connected to the Kodak Theater is very nice and has city lights views, or Hollywood hills with the Hollywood sign. Magic Castle Hotel is across the street, and Roosevelt Hotel Hollywood is just down the block. It has ghosts, some say, but you'll more often see famous celebrities making phantom appearances.

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area

Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

5. Intel Museum

Intel Museum

Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.

The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.

6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.

The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.

Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.

Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.

7. California’s Great America

California's Great America

There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.

California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.

Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.

Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.

8. Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

11. Central Park

Santa Clara Central Park

Featuring lots of wide-open spaces and massive swimming and community rec centers, Santa Clara’s Central Park is a go-to destination for activity minded visitors looking to make the most of their limited vacation time without traveling to more distant attractions.

The park is centrally located on Keily Boulevard, has ample parking, and features lots of outdoor amenities and recreational activity options.

From tennis and basketball to softball, lawn bowling, and a big playground, there’s really no excuse for getting bored while on-site. For those looking to spend a relaxing afternoon, there are a lake, built-in BBQs, and public restrooms.

12. The 49ers Museum

49ers Museum Located In The Levi’s Stadium

Even for those who won’t be in Santa Clara during the regular season, the 49ers stadium and museum are fun attractions worth visiting for sports-minded visitors.

The museum is located inside Levi’s Stadium and features nearly a dozen distinct galleries that are open to the public year-round.

It’s a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to football, its exhibits touch on science, technology, and art in a way that engages and entertains young and old minds alike.

Most guests check out the introductory video in the visitor’s center before showing themselves through the impressive collection of trophies, balls, and Super Bowl memorabilia on display.

13. The Santa Clara Fire Museum

Santa Clara Fire Museum

The Santa Clara Fire Department’s roots run all the way back to the 1850s when it was founded.

The museum is now located on Walsh Avenue in an unused training center behind the city’s new fire station.

It sports an impressive collection of equipment and historical memorabilia that give visitors unique insights into the lives of fire and rescue personnel in years past.

The museum’s highlights include a fully restored Model-T fire truck that served for two decades, beginning in the 1920s.

The knowledgeable local volunteer staff also offer regular programs geared at educating the public about fire safety and prevention issues.

14. Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

The Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History is run by a local historical society. It is housed in the depot of a now-defunct railroad on Railroad Avenue in Santa Clara.

Like many local historical attractions, the museum is staffed by local volunteers who love answering questions and showing first-time visitors around.

The museum’s exhibits include a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, including signals, safety equipment, and historical photographs dating back over 100 years.

The museum is regularly open to the public. It maintains an extensive library of books relating to railroad development and local history as well.

15. Voyager Coffee

Voyager Coffee, Santa Clara

Though it has only been around since 2016, Voyager Coffee’s owner and staff are dedicated to the noble pursuit of making their customers happy.

They do this largely by providing world-class coffee, but also by offering a comfortable space in which guests have opportunities to build relationships with like-minded customers.

Many of their coffees sport internationally influenced flavors, and they’re often infused with things like orange essence and cherry blossom water.

Don’t worry if you prefer your coffee straight-up, because they’ve got more traditional brews as well.

They offer fresh pastry and baked goods, tea, and other non-coffee drinks too.
