What people love about romania tours.
We had a great time exploring Romania over 11 days, by using the Classic Romania tour by Rolandia and building some extra days and sights into the plan at the end. We were very lucky to have Traian as our guide and excellent driver, and his knowledge and patience made our whole experience very special. Hotels were 4* and the cities were exceptionally beautiful, particularly around Sibiu and Cluj. The views of snow capped mountains in a clear blue sky were amazing for April and we had no rain at all. We loved the horse and cart ride, traditional lunch and fun dinner which were included. At the end we chose to stay for extra time in Brasov to see the Bear Sanctuary, then climb the mountain (by the cable car) before catching the train back to Bucharest the next day. We also included an afternoon at the huge Therme spa next to the airport before flying home. A great holiday and we were very impressed at the price and quality of our trip. Thank you to all at Rolandia.
This was a fabulous tour! Interesting itinerary, spectacular countryside, lovely walks, tasty local food and drink, and a great guide in Bogdan.

"Stefan, our tour guide, was excellent. He was humorous and always had all the information to hand. The fact that our group consisted of only 3 people was also very pleasant. I can only recommend the tour.

"The tour was highly professional and met all expectations in terms of accommodations, food, itinerary and communication throughout booking and during the week. My guide Bogdan was exemplary, not only did he follow the itinerary but extended hikes to the maximum of my abilities offering interesting and challenging alternatives. In addition to being an expert hiker he was also entertaining, thoughtful and an historian with a wealth of cultural facts. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in enjoying the beautiful mountain air and scenery while learning about the history of Romania.

Best time to visit romania.
July and August are the busiest months for tourists all over Europe because the weather is at its warmest. May and June are some of the best months to visit Romania, followed by September and early October as the weather is usually fine and the sites are less crowded than during peak season. Spring and autumn are considered optimal times for birdwatching in the Danube Delta. Romania has harsh winters, with most tourists choosing to travel to the ski resorts. Snow lingers as late as mid-May, and the hiking season doesn't begin in earnest until June. The resorts along the Black Sea coast get busy in late June and stay packed until mid-August. It tends to rain more in March, April, October and November.
Geography and environment
Bordered by Bulgaria , Serbia , Ukraine , Hungary and Moldova , Romania also has a stretch of coastline along the Black Sea. Much of Romania's terrain is mountainous with the Carpathian Mountains and Transylvanian Alps occupying parts of the central and northern regions. Home to a large number of glacial and karstic lakes, rivers and lagoons, Romania's splendid scenery will take many by surprise. Considerable amounts of arable land, orchards, vineyards, rural pastures and farmland are significant features of Romania's countryside.
Top 5 Classic Castles of Romania
1. bran castle.
Possibly Romania's best known castle, Transylvania's Bran Castle is linked to the legend of Dracula, although somewhat tenuously. Regardless, tourists flock in to see the heritage art, historic treasures and secret passages that all good castles are made of. A short trip from Brasov, this interesting attraction should be high on every traveler's list.
2. Hunyad Castle
Watch towers? Check. Drawbridge? Check. Dark History? Check. Hunyad Castle has all the classic hallmarks of a typical European castle. Once the prison of notorious Vlad the Impaler, Hunyad Castle's unique Gothic-Renaissance style is a result of extensive restoration after years of neglect.
3. Fagaras Castle
This ancient fortress and castle may lack the opulence of others, but is worthy of admiration for its enduring powers. Still surrounded by the moat which protected it for centuries, Fagaras Castle is a wonderful example of effective fortification - with enormous walls and towers built to withstand war and invasion.
4. Peles Castle
Nestled within the Carpathian Mountains, this gorgeous castle straight out of a fairytale is the perfect example of palatial bliss. With 30 bathrooms, an impressive collection of fine art, an extensive armor collection, manicured gardens, marble fireplaces and imposing statues, Peles Castle is one of Romania's grandest.
5. Pelisor Castle
Located within the Peles Castle complex, this castle is most famous for its decadent room made of gilded gold. Featuring Art Nouveau-style furnishings and art, plush interiors and an oak paneled lobby, Pelisor Castle certainly works its old-world charm.

Romania’s deep and dark secrets are something almost every wandering soul has the desire to uncover and the process of doing so can reveal even more enchanting enigmas than you knew of before discovering them.
The Land of Dracula is known for its myths, legends, intricate stories, and one-of-a-kind natural landscapes and medieval towns – thus making it a perfect place to explore with the best Romania tours.
Located in Southeast Europe west of Ukraine, Romania is a nation like no other. With a population of 19.12 million, the country is considered one of the most populous countries in Eastern Europe. Romania was taken over by the Soviet Union in 1944 and joined the USSR just four years later.
After 40 years as a state of the USSR, Romania became independent when the USSR was abolished in 1989. The country became a part of the European Union in 2007 and has had a stable economy since. Due to its resilience and strength, the country can be seen as one of the strongest countries in Europe.
Romania today can be seen as a perfect place to explore and uncover the many dark secrets it holds. Romania is known as the home of Dracula. Although commonly labeled as a myth, Dracula or Vlad ll was once a real person known as the Prince of Walachia from 1456 – 1462.
He was notorious for being cruel to his enemies and those who defied him. Born and raised in now what’s known as the famous Transylvania and is the inspiration for what we consider to be Dracula today. Dracula is what draws so many people to visit Romania, to begin with – though there are also many other famous films set in Romania that have lured in adventurous travelers like yourself over the year. Let’s look at the top places to visit while you’re in Romania !
The capital of Romania and the hub of the country, Bucharest is a hustling and bustling capital that you need to visit on your trip to Romania. Bucharest is situated right in the center of the Romanian plains and rests in the southern part of the country. With tons to see and do, Bucharest can be a perfect place to start your adventure.
Bucharest originally got its name in 1459 when a written document by Walachia’s king Vladd was founded and the city at that time was named, Bucuresti. Later on the name Bucharest. Bucharest soon became the country’s capital and the most important and powerful city in the country following both the first and second world Wars.
When in Bucharest, take the time to completely explore the city. Take a trip to the Palace of Parliament. Formerly a Communist Palace, the palace had turned into what is now known as parliament when the soviet union was abolished in 1989.
Take a stroll through some of the parks or gardens or perhaps take some time to visit the Arcul De Triumf. A war memorial archway made completely out of granite. You will be left speechless by the unique architecture you’ll find in Romania. It’s like communism meets Western European and will be the best background for your socials.
Transylvania
Transylvania is one of the most popular tourist sites and regions of Romania. Not far from Bucharest and just to the east of the Carpathian mountains, visiting Transylvania will give you a chance to see some of the most popular myths and legends from the country.
In the second century, Transylvania became part of the province of Dacia and became the kingdom of Dacia. The kingdom was then taken over in the 9th century when the Hungarians seized the region.
Soon after, Vlad ll became the king and one of the most well-known historical figures of Romania. Like his father, Vlad enrolled in the Order of the Dragon which was an organization created to defend Christian Europe against the ottoman empire.
Vlad was given the name Dracula which means “Son of Dracul” in Latin. “Dracul” means “The Devil” in Romanian. Transylvania can also be known as Transilvania in Romanian and It is one of the most historic places in eastern Europe.
Just 4 hours away from Bucharest, Transylvania is studded in historical sites and is the most famous place in Romania. Tourists flock from all over just to see the castle in person. Visiting can help educate you on the vast history of Romania and it can quickly become of the most memorable moments of your life.
Now you may be asking yourself why is it so important to take an organized tour of Romania. Romania is such a diverse country with so much to see and do, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what you want to do and how you want to do it in the time you spend there.
It can also be confusing and tedious for those who are not as experienced in planning or booking travel. That’s why it’s always recommended to book an official tour to guide you through the country and take you to some of the best cultural sites.
So, with this in mind, and much as we have done for the best Montenegro tours and best Georgia tours , here we are going to be talking about one of the best Romania tours (and their operators), so you can be inspired – and then choose with confidence.

Romania - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips
When you think about Romania, chances are you immediately think of Transylvania and the mysterious Dracula. However, the country has so much more to offer its visitors than this legend. Romania is full of historic medieval towns, colourful streets, gorgeous castles, and Communist-era architecture. The country also offers beach resorts on the Black Sea and thermal spas among the Carpathian Mountains. If you’re looking for a charming destination steeped in rich history and fascinating culture, a holiday in Romania should sit at the top of your list.
Tour Highlights
- Experience the magic and myth of Bran Castle
- Visit the salt mines and underground cathedral of Salina Targu Ocna
- Walk the colourful streets of Sibiu
- Chase waterfalls in the Cindrel Mountains
- Explore the halls of Peleș Castle
- Drive the incredibly twisty roads of the Transfagarasan Highway
- Climb the clock tower in Sighisoara for unparalleled views of the medieval town
Travel Tips
- If flying into Bucharest, the capital city, be aware that the top tourist sites of Transylvania are a couple of hours away. Romania is a very large country, so be sure to plan accordingly.
- You can’t miss Covrigi, a traditional Romanian snack that is similar to a pretzel. Covered in seeds or filled with jam, they make the perfect inexpensive snack as you roam city streets.
- Romanians are extremely friendly and enjoy interacting with travellers. English is spoken in large cities, but locals love any attempt to use Romanian. Some topics are still taboo in Romania, however, including homosexuality.
- Taxis are inexpensive and a great way to travel around Romania. However, be careful of scam artists. Always make sure the taxi uses a meter, otherwise set an agreed price before travelling.
- Take extra caution when travelling through Romanian nature, particularly if camping. A bear sighting is quite common around small towns, and the country features Europe’s largest population of wolves.
Romania has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Romania before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in the country , do check out our Romania Travel Guide for more information.

Sustainable tourism
We are trying to do business sustainably. We are a member of the Association for Ecotourism in Romania (AER) and in our daily activities we try to implement the good practices promoted by the association:
- we support the interest of the local people, trying to promote tours in the Romania’s rural areas , directing revenues to small local businesses.
- at the same time, we are doing this trying to preserve the cultural heritage, organising authentic travel experiences
- we try to take care of the environment, from daily gestures like recycling or using public transportation, to more long term actions
- for example, every year, we redirect 20% of the profit tax to NGOs organising reforestation actions.
Private tours
Our trips are only private tours. Our guests are members of the same group of friends or family. Even our walking tours are private, we are not organising shared tours. Especially in this period, we believe that a small private tour is the way to still do tourism in a safe way.

About Romania
Romania is the largest country within South-East Europe, sharing borders Ukraine to the north, with the Republic of Moldova to the East, with the Black Sea to the South-East, with Bulgaria to the south, with Serbia in the South-West and with Hungary to the West – Northwest.
Romania’s territory is equally distributed between mountains, hills, lowlands territories with numerous rivers and lakes. The Carpathian Mountains (known also as the Transylvanian Alps) dominate the central Romania. They are surrounded by the Moldavian and the Transylvanian plateaus followed by the Pannonian plain to the West and the very fertile plain of Wallachia to the South.
Our forests cover approx. 20% of our territory so the fauna is one of the richest in Europe including bears, deer, lynx, chamois and wolves. The legendary Danube River ends its eight-country journey at the Black Sea, after forming one of the largest and most bio-diverse wetlands in the world, the Danube Delta.
Short History
Europe’s oldest remains of modern human were discovered in the “Cave with Bones” in present day Romania and are estimated to be 42,000 years old. However the first written history of the country was about the Getae tribes and dates back in 440 BCE. The Dacians, believed to be part of the Getae, made its greatest expansion during the reign of King Burebista in 82 BC. When the Romans left Dacia, the region was attacked by the Goths, then by the Huns.
During the late Middle Ages, Moldova and Wallachia were under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire while Transylvania was occupied by the Austrian-Hungarians. The Romanian inhabitants, especially in Transylvania, faced several suppressions and were often not even considered to be citizens (as it was the case with the city of Brasov where they not allowed to live within the city walls).
In 1600, Michael the Brave united for the first time the three principalities under one flag, but one year later he was assassinated by the Hungarians and the unification dissolved. 1699 Transylvania became a possession of the expanding Austrian Empire, which acquired also a large part of Wallachia in 1718 and returned it in 1739. Shortly afterwards (1775), northern Moldova was also occupied, while the rest of the province fell 1812 under the Russian influence.
The desire of forming an independent national state emerged also in the three Romanian historical provinces and led to several uprisings against the occupying powers, the most important one being the one of Tudor Vladimirescu in 1821. The revolution year of 1848 which started in France expanded very rapidly and reached also the three Romanian provinces. They failed to achieve their goal but opened the path of free election of Alexandru Ioan Cuza as ruler in both Wallachia and Moldova (with the support of the Great Powers) and the foundation of the first state of Romania . Though, because of internal struggles for power and the thread of the Ottoman Empire unhappy with the independence policy of this new state, a foreign prince was brought to rulership ower Romania.
During the Russo-Turkish War Romania defended with the Russian, and the 1878 Treaty of Berlin, the Great Powers declared the country as an independent nation. The country joined the Axis during World War II. It supplied the Nazi Germany with oil resulting to numerous attacks from the Allies. Eventually Romania changed sides and united with the Allies but the Paris Peace Conference of 1947 did not recognize its role in the defeat of the Nazi Germany.
In the Middle Ages Romanians lived in three distinct principalities: Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. Moldavia and Wallachia were under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire while Transylvania was occupied by the Austrian-Hungarians. Modern Romania was formed in 1859 through the union of Wallachia and Moldavia, and then extended in 1918 through the union of Transylvania, as well as Bukovina and Basarabia.
