Rajkot Travel Guide – Places to Visit

Founded in 1620 by Thakore Sahib Vibhoji Ajoji Jadeja of Jadeja clan, Rajkot, was ruled by Mohammad Ghazni and Muzaffarid dynasty before the Jadejas. The Jadeja of Nawanagar got defeated in the battle against the Mughals. Thakore Sahib became a prisoner and came under the care of Jodhaji Soda, who was Akbar’s wife’s brother and Thakore’s uncle. History has it that he received land for his services with the Mughals, which he converted with the help of Raju Sandhi to the city of Rajkot. After this, Thakores successor suppressed the Kathy tribes and strengthened Rajkot by adding villages by the 17th century.

Rajkot was renamed Masumabad and a fortress was built. There was a deep moat, which no longer exists now. There were 8 gates to Masumabad. Masumabad was conquered by Thakore Sahib Ranmalji Mehramanji in 1732 and the name Rajkot was restored. In 1818, the Thakores accepted British protection till India got independence and Rajkot was incorporated with Gujarat when the State was formed in 1960.

Rajkot – Down the Ages

After Independence, Rajkot, the capital of Saurashtra was merged with the Bombay State in 1956. Later when the State of Gujarat was formed, Rajkot became a part of Gujarat. Thakore Sahib Pradyumnasinhji died in 1973 and his son Mr. Manoharsinhji Pradyumansinhji was the Member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly for many years. Down the ages, Rajkot progressed into a successful town and became the centre of activities. However, the 2001 earthquake near Bhuj struck the city and affected it greatly. Today, Rajkot is known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi lived most of his early years and there is a home exhibiting his belongings.

Kaba Gandhi No Delo

Watson Museum and Library

This is found in the Jubilee Garden. The museum introduces the visitor to the culture and the heritage value of Saurashtra.  It was found in 1888 and was mainly found for preserving objects of value. Rajkumar College

Rashtriya Shala

This is a centre, which is famous for the weaving of the “Patola”. It was founded by Mahatma Gandhi. When Mahatma Gandhi was imbibing the policy of non-violence, the country got inspired by this. In 1921, Rashtriya Shala was set up and started functioning. Today it has activities for the children, adolescents, cultural activities, reading facilities, religious training, and production of khadi, operation of the charkha or the spinning wheel, and weaving of the Patola silk are the main activities here. Besides, pure linseed oil is extracted here, and is in great demand. There is a room where Gandhi fasted during the Civil Disobedience Movement. This has been preserved as a National monument. Thus, the Rashtriya Shala started as a single structure but today has bifurcated with a number of offshoots. Rightly, it is the mother of all activities in Rajkot and is a much-revered monument.

Rajkot, earlier known as Masumabad had eight gates leading into the city. The Gates were studded with iron spikes for the sake of security. These gates were the Kotharia Naka, Rajya Naka, Bedi Naka, Bhichari Naka, Sardhar Naka, Pal no Darwajo. There was the Khadaki Naka near Naklank temple. The fort is in ruins and the debris of the fort is still seen.

Jagat Mandir

This is built of red stones. There is a beautifully carved temple built for Sri Ramakrishna Paramhans. Lord Krishna is the presiding deity here and is known as Dwarkadhish. The temple has a shrine, which is erected on 60 pillars made of sandstone and granite. The temple is 170 feet high. There is a flag in the temple, which is replaced thrice in a day. This is believed to have been constructed 2500 years ago.

Lal Pari Lake

This is a beautiful spot for picnics. It is around 5 kms from Rajkot. This exotic nature’s gift is also a famous spot for bird watching. There is a variety of birds found here. Birds like the black tailed godwit, rosy pastor, and Pheasant-tailed jacana, purple moorhen, wigeon, common teal and the pelican and spoonbill are found here.

It is around 8 kms from Rajkot. It supplies water to the whole of Rajkot.

This town around 50 kms from Rajkot is a Heritage hotel now. It is built on top of a hill on the banks of the River Machchhu. It was built by Maharana Raj Saheb in the 20th century. The scenic beauty, the architectural excellence, the recreation facilities and the splendor of the town is a sight to behold.

Thus Rajkot, the cotton centre of India, is a place to visit and take back a lot of nostalgia.

A Mississippi pizza place has been named one of the best 22 pizza restaurants in America by the New York Times this week.

Marisol Doyle opened Leña to much fanfare in the spring of 2023 along historic Cotton Row in downtown Cleveland. Since then, the restaurant has been full virtually every day.

The new artisan pizza venue in the heart of the Mississippi Delta is going very well.

And it is being recognized across the nation.

The New York Times recognized the Bolivar County eatery by saying this:

"The pizza at Leña collapses the distance between Naples, Italy, where Marisol Doyle, the restaurant’s chef and co-owner, studied pizza making; the Mississippi Delta, her adopted home; and Sonora, Mexico, where she was born and raised. The menu includes pies you’d expect to find at a modern Neapolitan pizzeria, like margherita and pepperoni (named pepperrory, after Ms. Doyle’s husband and business partner, Rory)."

Leña was featured in the Clarion Ledger last fall. In making the New York Times list, the Cleveland eatery joins a prestigious group that ranges from Alaska to Vermont. Cleveland was not close to the smallest city on the list, with Illinois town Ava (population 553) making the elite group with Scratch Brewing.

Doyle has worked in restaurants much of her professional life and managed a local eatery in Cleveland. She said she "burned out" there after 10 years and began looking for something else.

Between burnout and Leña, she said she "dabbled a little bit with bagels" with a friend at the Cleveland Farmer's Market. That turned into a business in Clarksdale for about a year that focused on coffee and bagels and helped local teens learn how to get into the workforce as an economic education and development project.

After a family emergency drew her business partner to Vermont, Marisol Doyle missed working and customer interaction. The Doyles put their heads together and decided to go out on a limb and try pizza in downtown Cleveland.

That has led to amazing results and reviews and now being named one of the best pizza places in the United States.

EA Sports lists Doak Campbell Stadium among toughest places to play. Did FSU beat Florida?

As fans count down the days until the return of College Football 25 is released, EA Sports has released its rankings of the toughest places to play .

Florida State's Doak S. Campbell Stadium was selected as No. 9.

It is one game ahead of its in-state rival, Florida Gators.

Texas A&M's Kyle Field is the No. 1 ranked toughest stadium to play.

Other schools that are ahead of FSU are Bryant-Denney Stadium in Alabama, Tiger Stadium of LSU, Ohio Stadium at Ohio State (aka The Horseshoe), Sanford Stadium in Georgia, Campbell Randall Stadium in Wisconsin, and Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Oklahoma.

According to the EA website, historical stats such as home winning percentage, home game attendance, active home winning streaks, and team prestige are considered factors in the ranking.

Doak Campbell has been around for 79 years, has about 79,000 capacity, and averaged 78,711 last season.

FSU has won nine straight home games going back to the 2022 season.

The stadium's west side is currently under renovation and is expected to be ready before the start of the 2025 season when the Seminoles face Alabama.

While with temporary seats this season, FSU has sold out four home games.

FSU will have its stadium ready as early as July 2025.

FSU opens the season against Georgia Tech in the Aer Lingus Classic in Dublin, Ireland, on Aug 24 at noon on ESPN. Its first home opener will be against Boston College on Labor Day at 7:30 p.m.

College Football 25 is expected to be available on July 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox X|S.

Long Beach: View the annual fireworks show off the Queen Mary from Ocean Blvd. and the downtown shoreline. If you want to go onto the Queen, that’ll cost you $55. Note that the city’s main fireworks show held on July 3 has been canceled this year.

Marina del Rey: This annual show will start at 9 p.m. and be synchronized with music ove loudspeakers at Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way and FIsherman’s Village, 13755 Fiji Way. Fireworks will be shot off a barge off the Marina’s south jetty. The show is apparently visible in the marina, Venice and Playa Vista and Dockweiler Beach. 5 things to watch for in the first 2024 general election debate

A key question will be whether any gaffes or knockout punches break through.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off Thursday for the first of two presidential debates this year, offering each a high-profile opportunity to try to gain an edge in a race characterized by persistently narrow polling margins.

The debate, moderated by CNN, is occurring unusually early in the election cycle and features the atypical combination of a president and a former president both having to defend their White House records. They will also be clashing under unique circumstances -- CNN will have the ability to mute candidates' microphones when they're not talking, and there will be no studio audience.

Debates in the past have produced signature moments that helped alter the course of presidential race, while others have failed to make a dent. Biden and Trump both come into the debate with widespread worries over the fitness for office and character, as well as universal name recognition -- and thus hardened voter opinions -- that leave few opportunities for fluctuations in the White House contest.

Here are five things to watch for on Thursday.

Do any gaffes or knockout punches break through?

Traditionally, most parts of debates are forgotten by the time voters head to the polls in November. But marquee moments have the potential to break through.

Gaffes -- think Rick Perry's "oops" moment in a 2011 GOP primary debate -- or knockout punches -- think Ronald Reagan citing his opponent's "youth and inexperience" in 1984 -- have been able to pierce the national consciousness and live on throughout history, even beyond the years in which those elections took place.

Radars for such moments will be particularly high in Thursday's debate, as worries over the two candidates' fitness for office are staples in the race.

Biden, the country's oldest president ever at 81 years old, is the target of ceaseless attacks over his mental acuity from Trump and his allies, who at times disseminate misleadingly edited videos to appear as if he's lost during public appearances.

Trump, meanwhile, has made a series of flubs on the trail, including confusing or forgetting people's names, though polls show worries over his mental fitness for office aren't as widespread over concerns about Biden.

Strategists said a bad gaffe could damage either campaigns' chances of victory in November, but that a strong performance, especially for Biden, could help mitigate worries over his age.

Biden "can't stumble around words. He can't drift off into these incoherent little tangents that he occasionally does because all he has to do is screw up once, and that's going to be the thing that lives," said veteran GOP strategist David Kochel. "I just think there's a huge opportunity for him to put a lot of things to rest. But it's also a minefield."

Character or policy?

Both candidates have ping-ponged back and forth between hitting each other on character and policy, still searching for the playbook that'll put their opponent away.

Biden has repeatedly cast Trump as a threat to democracy, citing his role in inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and his vow to be a "dictator" on his first day in office -- a comment Trump's allies say was made in jest. He also more recently began highlighting Trump's recent conviction on 34 felony counts in New York.

He's also sought to knock the former president on abortion, a key animating policy issue for Democrats, COVID-era economic slumps and for helping dash a bipartisan immigration bill in Congress earlier this year.

Trump, meanwhile, has focused on the president's age and dubbed him the head of the head of the "Biden crime family," citing both unfounded allegations of corruption and the president's son's recent conviction on gun charges.

Trump also has spoken to voter frustrations over inflation and the border.

"If he says the word reproductive rights or abortion less than 100 times over the course of the 90 minutes, he's probably failing. But I expect he'll raise that in almost every answer. If they ask him about tax policy, he's going to talk about abortion," GOP strategist Alex Conant said of Biden. "I think beyond that, he's going to want to remind people about Jan. 6."

"Trump's obviously gonna try to talk about inflation as much as possible," he added.

Whichever tact the candidates take -- an emphasis on character or policy -- could indicate where they think their opponents are most vulnerable.

Offense v. defense

The unique nature of a president clashing with his predecessor also leaves it unclear who will be able to seize the offensive.

Traditionally during a presidential reelection campaign, debates are characterized by the president defending his record in the White House, while a challenger is on the offensive while also defending a record in the Senate or governor's mansion -- less impactful and relatable to everyday voters.

Now, though, both candidates will have White House records to back up, leaving it unclear whether either will be able to seize the offensive -- and if one or the other will end up stuck on their back foot for the 90-minute tete-a-tete.

Already, millions of dollars have been dumped into ads tearing into the candidates' respective records -- but being seen as a superior attacker on stage could pay dividends for either contender.

Early timing

Thursday's debate is happening atypically early for a general presidential election, the impacts of which are unclear.

On the one hand, strategists speculated, the timing of the debate has a chance to set the tone for the race in voters' minds before they truly start tuning in.

"I think it makes the debate more important, because it's it'll set the tone for the rest of the campaign. For Biden, who is desperate to make this a choice, not a referendum, it frames the race early on in a way that his campaign wants to frame it. And I think Trump is looking for a knockout punch," Conant said.

However, the debate will be taking place months before Labor Day, the unofficial day highlighted by politicos as the earliest that most voters start paying attention to the race in earnest. And five months is a political lifetime, meaning the debate could be flushed from voters' minds by ever-changing news cycles.

"It's hard to see how there is a big shift or a big thing in this race where there's also a lot of fairway left to play," Republican pollster Robert Blizzard said.

Who does the novel format help?

The new format for the debate -- which both campaigns agreed to -- marks a significant departure from past clashes.

Recently dominated by crosstalk and crowd appeals, this Thursday's event will in theory be tamer. Microphones will be turned off when candidates are not answering questions, and no audience will be present to cheer or jeer.

The conventional wisdom among operatives in both parties is that the new rules favor Biden by robbing Trump of the ability to feed off an audience or devolve the event into inaudible crosstalk.

"[Trump] is the king, undisputed, undefeated king of crosstalk at a debate. Rewrote the rules basically about it. But he also likes to feed off of a crowd. And so, you take away the feeding off the crowd, you don't know how President Trump's going to react to not having that instant feedback from a crowd," said Chip Saltsman, a strategist who worked on former Vice President Mike Pence's now-suspended presidential campaign.

However, Republicans also said they hope that limiting crosstalk could make Trump appear less like a bully -- at least to the audience at home. There's still nothing to stop the former president from at least talking during Biden's answers.
